President pm. Please come out and support these great businesses and watch for updates on more scheduled ribbon cuttings. Our Student Chamber Leaders will be kicking off their new school year on October 10th and I personally want to thank Lori Eshilian for her involvement with our amazing students. I have heard that this year we have more students involved than ever with this program. I had the opportunity to hear last year’s Student Chamber President Beto Luna speak so eloquently on how being part of this group has made a difference on how he interacts with business owners and how it will guide him as he attends college and his career after college. We are excited to meet all of the new Student Chamber Leaders at our next Wake Up Whittier. These juniors and seniors are eager to learn from all of us so please share your business knowledge with them. Speaking of Wake Up Whittier, this month we will be at Family Church on Greenleaf Ave. on October 18. It will be a time of great networking with fellow business owners and they have the best breakfast spread around so this event definitely needs to go on your “To Do” list! I look forward to seeing all of you there.

The trustee must allow you to continue to use the residence rent-free for a fixed number of years specified in the trust instrument (the “fixed term”), which should be a term you are likely to survive. During the fixed term, you will continue to pay mortgage expenses, real estate taxes, insurance, and expenses for maintenance and repairs, and will continue to deduct mortgage interest and real estate taxes on your

individual income tax return. When the fixed term ends, the residence is distributed to your children, or remains in further trust for them. Even after the fixed term ends, you can continue to use the residence in one of two ways. First, rather than immediately distributing the residence to your children, the residence can be retained in trust for your spouse’s lifetime, thus assuring that the residence is available to you. Second, you can enter into a lease with your

IN MEMORIAM: Jose Ramos, founder Welcome Home Vietnam Vets Vietnam veteran Jose Ramos, an Army combat medic who cycled his way across the country and rubbed elbows with politicians and royalty alike on behalf of his fellow veterans, died at the age of 68 from cancer treatment complications, his family said. The longtime Whittier resident’s advocacy spanned decades after he came home from the war. His years of grass-roots effort culminated in the official recognition of March 30 as Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day in the state of California. Then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed the day into law in 2009, with Ramos by his side. Thirty-eight states and Puerto Rico joined in recognizing the day. In 2011, the U.S. Senate formally recognized Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day.

City Of Whittier

UPDATE MAYOR'S MESSAGE Joe Vinatieri

I hope you all had a great time showing off your hometown pride during Whittier Day at the LA County Fair last month. With his many years of community service in the arts and his WWII service as a veteran, Yosh Nakamura was a worthy community hero representing Whittier. There’s nothing like enjoying the rides, the music, the games and the food with your family each year, and we’re excited that our community has the opportunity to make new memories and celebrate our City together. October 6 is National Manufacturing Day which gives us a chance to celebrate those who proudly stand behind goods and services made in America. On National Manufacturing Day, more than 1,600 American manufacturers will open their doors and take up the important work of inspiring our young people to pursue careers in manufacturing and engineering. Today’s science, technology, engineering and math graduates will power the next chapter of American production and innovation, and harnessing their potential is an economic imperative. They create jobs through entrepreneurship, and their competitiveness revitalizes American manufacturing. I encourage you to explore local events taking place this month throughout our region and learn more about some of the fantastic manufacturing businesses we are fortunate to have right here in Whittier, providing jobs to so many in our community, like Russ Bassett Corporation, Hedman Hedders, Indio Products and Rasmussen Iron Works to name a few. Don’t miss a free business seminar focused on “Content Beyond Words” hosted by the Chamber, the City of Whittier and SCORE on Tuesday, October 17 at the Whittwood Branch Library. Learn how you can make the most of your video marketing and gain tips for sharing your content across all mediums. Can’t make the workshop? Don’t forget that the City offers our Tools for Business Success program which is available online for free.

There’s an entire “Business Planning and Assistance” section which is very helpful for small business owners and entrepreneurs. Take a moment to browse the site; you might be surprised at what’s available. You can access the program through the City website at www.whittier. toolsforbusiness.info. We are fortunate to have so many partners offering opportunities and resources in and around our community for residents and business owners. In addition to the many services provided by the Chamber, there are a few other local organizations to explore. Tri-Cities ROP, a cooperative career training program offered by the Whittier Union High School District and El Rancho Unified, is dedicated to providing career preparation for high school students and adults. If you are unemployed and need to improve your skills in a technical field or are looking for a new career, Tri-Cities ROP is an excellent option as the classes range from nursing/ forensics to art/engineering. Call TriCities ROP directly for more information at (562) 698-9571. America’s Job Center of California, formerly SASSFA, also provides assistance for job seekers, businesses, youth, seniors and veterans. Find job listings, skill-building tools, lay-off aversion assistance and more by calling (562) 946-2237. Mark your calendar for some family fun happening this month. Casita del Pueblo and REACH will host the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Art and Music Festival on Sunday, October 8, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Uptown Whittier. There will be food, special dance and musical performances, a vintage car show and all types of art on display. Find out more at www.casitadelpueblo.org. On Saturday, October 28, join the Whittier Community Foundation, the Whittier Host Lions Club and me for the annual Spooktacular 5K Run/Walk. The 5K follows a fun path through Uptown and features prizes and costume contests. Children 12 and under can sign up for the Creepy Crawly Half-Mile Dash. All registered runners/walkers will receive a free t-shirt and goodie bag and enjoy a free pancake breakfast. For more information please call (562) 567-9460. Quake City ’87: The 30th Anniversary

When the ground started shaking at 7:42 a.m. on Oct. 1, 1987, few knew the 5.9-magnitude Whittier Narrows Earthquake would forever change Whittier’s destiny. It was a defining moment for this Quaker town. To that end the Whittier Museum is partnering with the American Red Cross, the United States Geological Survey, Caltech, Southern California Gas Co., the City of Whittier and the Whittier City School District to present “Quake City ’87: The 30th Anniversary.” This interactive four-month exhibit will feature dozens of vivid images, mementos and preparedness strategies to survive “The Big One.” The exhibit will kick off at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30 with a presentation by renowned earthquake authority Dr. Dennis Mileti at the Whittier City School District office, 7211 Whittier Ave. Dr. Mileti will discuss “The First 7 Days after the Quake.” After his presentation, the exhibit’s grand opening will take place at the Whittier Museum, 6755 Newlin Ave. L.A. County’s “Shaky Quaky” earthquake simulator will be set up in the Museum’s parking lot. Guests can enjoy refreshments before Mayor Joe Vinatieri and former City Manager Tom Mauk officially open the exhibit, which will include a 50-minute video produced by John Garside documenting what people remember from that day 30 years ago. For more information call (562) 945-3871.

Package Theft Prevention

Captain Michael Davis As the holiday season approaches, Whittier like every other community will begin to see a lot more packages being delivered to its residences. As a result, Whittier, along with the rest of Southern California can unfortunately expect to see a significant increase in package thefts. A recent national survey found that over 23 million people reported package thefts last year. Unfortunately, package theft is an easy crime for thieves to commit – and many who are caught do not face serious jail consequences. Package thieves drive around neighborhoods on a daily basis looking for packages that are visible from the street. With a large increase in package deliveries leading up to and during the holiday season, thieves will have many opportunities to steal property from unsuspecting residents. In order to reduce your chances of becoming a victim of package theft, here are some crime prevention tips to follow: • Sign up for delivery notification via text or email. This will let you know that a package has been left on your doorstep. • As soon as you receive a delivery notification and if no one is at your

home, call a neighbor or a closeby family member and ask them to collect your package. Install a camera doorbell system that will send you a video n o t i fi c a t i o n w h e n a p a c k a g e arrives and to serve as a deterrent for a would-be package thief. Have packages delivered to your workplace or place of business if it is allowed Ship your package(s) to an authorized local receipt center or locker system Set up and mark an area not visible from the street where delivery personnel can leave packages at your doorstep. Use chalk or tape to mark the area and leave detailed delivery instructions when completing an online order. Inquire with the shipping company about special programs and apps that allow customers to change delivery locations once the item has been shipped.

children which will allow you to live in the residence for as long as you wish. (If you do so, however, you must pay fair market value rent to your children after the fixed term ends in order to keep the residence from being subject to estate tax on your death.) Although your transfer of the residence to the trust is a taxable gift, you are allowed to subtract, from the fair market value of the residence, the value of your right to live rent-free in the residence for the fixed term. Thus, the amount of the taxable gift will usually be substantially less than the fair market value of the residence. If the amount of the gift is less than your available exclusion from the gift tax ($5,490,000 in 2017, reduced by amounts allowed for gifts in previous years), no gift tax will be due as a result of your gift to the trust. If you survive the fixed term of the QPRT, the value of the residence will not be included in your estate for estate tax purposes. Even if you don’t survive the fixed term, the estate tax consequences will be no worse than they would have been if you hadn’t created the trust in the first place. A QPRT is an effective way to remove a residence’s value from your estate at a greatly reduced gift tax cost

If you have any questions regarding the above discussed topic or any other tax matter, please feel free to give me a call at (562) 698-9891.

Junior Advisory Board of From Maddi’s Closet helps patients at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Members of the Junior Advisory Board of From Maddi’s Closet, a local non-profit organization raising funds to help children battling cancer, participated recently in a special “Ask the Doctor” and “Game Night” program at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). From Maddi’s Closet served as a co-sponsor for the event, which was attended by nearly 60 patients, siblings and parents along with CHLA doctors and caregivers. The group provided pizza, salad, drinks and desserts for participants. The teens assisted in setting up the room and the dinner, as well as a craft station that made name buttons for the patients and their siblings to wear. The Junior Advisory Board (JAB) members coordinated with the CHLA Survivorship and Supportive Care Program team during the event. The JAB members ate together with families, and then assisted with different activities, including providing supervision over younger siblings of teen patients so that parents and teens could participate in meetings uninterrupted. Other JAB members helped pass out raffle tickets to both

parents and teen patients as they met in their separate meetings, which allowed them to ask questions in a safe, understanding and supportive environment. “This event was a great opportunity for our Junior Advisory Board members to sit in a room with teens their own age who have been diagnosed with cancer,” says From Maddi’s Closet President and Founder Donna Holmes. “The young patients asked very real questions that might make some people uncomfortable, but they reflected the harsh reality of the difficulties facing teens and young adults fighting cancer.” For more information about From Maddi’s Closet visit www.frommaddiscloset.org.

Nekter Juice Bar Daniel Hernandez 15307 Whittier Blvd. Whittier, CA 90603 Phone: (562) 315-5945 Email: whittier@nekterjuicebar.com Website: www.nekterjuicebar.com Nékter was founded in 2010 by Steve and Alexis Schulze, two healthy living enthusiasts, who set out to transform the juice and smoothie experience based upon the fundamental belief that “healthy” can taste great, be easily accessible for those on their path to wellness, and be affordable too. While the juice bars of yesterday had lost their way, offering sugar-laden, processed options that were marketed as healthy, Nékter purposefully chose to offer a simple and truly healthy menu of fresh and clean juices and foods, free of processed ingredients, artificial flavors, added sugars, and unnecessary fillers. Each of Nékter’s menu offerings starts upon a foundation of fresh juice, and are designed to optimize overall health and wellness by feeding the body with essential vitamins and nutrients to increase energy, boost immunity, and cleanse and detoxify. Guests can choose from six fresh juices, seven smoothies and five acai bowls and can customize their orders based on individual diet or lifestyle preferences, such as vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, low-fat, and low-sugar. For guests on the go, Nékter offers a selection of cold-pressed juices and cold-brewed coffees that are also healthy, clean and nutritious.

Whittier, CA - Imagine forty years ago if you were told that lasers would replace scalpels in surgery or that robotic instruments would build cars; you may not have believed it. By the same token, would you believe that chiropractic treatments could be performed using a special hand-held instrument developed by NASA scientists; all while you were sitting in an upright position without any turning or twisting movements? According to Dr. Yani Feliciano, “This new form of computerized treatment is so gentle and effective, that it truly amazes even the most skeptical patients. It’s called the Ultralign and it’s the newest version of the Proadjuster which is the latest, stateof-the-art technology in existence today, and the only one in Whittier.” This technology can safely and gently analyze and treat the spine and other joints to remove the nerve impingement that is often the cause of pains in the low back, neck, shoulders and elsewhere in the body. It also works on a variety of muscular conditions to loosen tight muscles with ease and comfort. Many patients say that it’s like getting a mini-massage. Even patients with knee, hip and foot problems such as plantar fascitis are being helped. It is also covered by most insurance companies including Medicare. Dr. Yani uses the ProAdjuster to analyze a patient’s spine and pin-point Dr. Yani says that “The secret to this technology lies in its ability areas of nerve impingement syndrome to deliver an extremely precise and gentle adjustment.” She causing malfunction and pain. says that, “Even though traditional forms of adjusting also work, people are drawn to this new technique because of how gentle it is and does not involve any twisting, especially in the neck. Many people like getting adjusted with traditional manual techniques, all of which are safe and effective. But there are a large number of people who never get to experience the amazing benefits of chiropractic because they are scared to have their spines adjusted in that way,” says Dr. Yani. Now, there is no longer a reason to be wary. This technology is perfect for anyone who has been thinking about going to a chiropractor, but hasn’t yet made that decision. Dr. Yani wants everyone to be able to experience these same benefits and if you have nerve interference causing any of the following conditions, the Ultralign may be the answer you’ve been looking for... • Neck & Shoulder pain • Poor Circulation • Low back pain • Sciatic pain • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome • Arthritis • Headaches • High Cholesterol • TMJ Problems • Fibromyalgia • Scoliosis • High Blood Pressure • Sports Injuries • Planter Fascitis • Knee or hip pain • Diabetes Computer guided treatment is consistent, measurable and extremely gentle.
