We Mean Business

On Wednesday, May 4th, 2011 from 4 to 7 p.m., five local Chambers of Commerce will join together for the 9th Annual CAPC, Inc. Kaleidoscope Mixer & Silent Auction at the Radisson Hotel Whittier. Called the Kaleidoscope, this colorful blend of five cities will offer Chamber members five times the networking opportunities and a ballroom full of specialty items offering mixer attendees a head start on the spring shopping season! Chamber members from La Habra, Norwalk, Pico Rivera, Santa Fe Springs and Whittier will all be represented at this year’s mixer. Each Chamber has been assigned a color: La Habra is yellow, Norwalk is red, Pico Rivera is blue, Santa Fe Springs is green and the Whittier Chamber is orange. Residents and Chamber members are encouraged to show their city pride by wearing clothing that corresponds with the color of their Chamber, and orange you glad to be a member of the Whittier Chamber? Be sure to show your Whittier Chamber pride and dress in your best orange outfit - the brighter the better! Each Chamber will host a table providing information on membership and upcoming events. In addition to great Chamber networking, the Kaleidoscope Mixer also features hundreds of silent auction items to bid on. Purchase $10 auction board squares for a chance at winning an iPad2 32GB with Wi-Fi, or a fabulous getaway trip package provided by The Traveling Traveler, not to mention the 50/50 raffle and other great prizes. The Radisson Hotel Whittier, Café ‘n Stuff, Catering by Herach & Ara, Fenix 5-4, Bella Café and other local food vendors will be providing delicious appetizers for guests to enjoy and the evening will also include a no-host bar. Entertainment will be provided by Whittier’s own groovy guy Rudy Hernandez of RMH DanceSport & Productions. Businesses and community members can support this event in many different capacities. Even if you are unable to attend, you can still support CAPC, Inc. by donating an auction item or basket from your business for the special event. You can also serve as a Corporate/ Family Sponsor for only $100 and receive signage at the event and in the printed program, or bring your co-workers, family and friends to network and shop. All the proceeds from the silent auction, raffle and Corporate/Family Sponsorships will go directly to supporting the services provided by CAPC, Inc., or Community Advocates for People’s Choice, a local organization specializing in empowering individuals with disabilities to maximize their quality of life through job placement in their local communities. Organizations and Service Clubs to Be Featured at Wake Up Whittier 13th Annual “Salute To Service” Honors Volunteerism and Service

Each year the Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce dedicates one Wake Up Whittier program solely to the local non-profit community. The city of Whittier is well-known for its many non-profit organizations, service clubs, churches, foundations and other philanthropic groups, making it one of the best places to live and work! The Whittier Chamber is proud to recognize such service and volunteerism by dedicating the May 11th Wake Up Whittier to the annual “Salute to Service” program. The event will be hosted by Whittier Hospital Medical Center, located at 9080 Colima Rd. in Whittier, with breakfast beginning at 7:30 a.m. The Salute to Service program, which features a mini expo and a brief overview of each organization, gives non-profits and service clubs a chance to display their materials and market their group to over 200 Chamber members at the monthly Wake Up Whittier networking breakfast. Participants also gain additional marketing with their photo and mission overview highlighted in a special section of the June Business Focus newspaper. This event will give you a chance to explore the many outstanding organizations that the Whittier community has to offer. Although tables for the event are dedicated to non-profit organizations, the May Wake Up Whittier will still offer all of the great networking and business development opportunities that it always does. • • •

MAYOR’S MESSAGE

Hello friends and Chamber members! As I write my message on Easter afternoon, I see photo after photo pop up on Facebook of the wonderful Easter Sunrise Services that took place throughout our community. Personally, I find it a great blessing to live and work in a community with such a strong group of church congregations. Regardless of our personal faith, we all benefit from their great work in our community. My Easter weekend started with the Mayor’s Prayer breakfast on Good Friday at the Hilton. Our outgoing mayor, Greg Nordbak, hosted a terrific morning breakfast that featured former NFL quarterback Jeff Kemp (yes, I am old Ben Greer, enough to remember him playing) as the morning's main speaker. GM Properties At this breakfast, which has taken place for over 40 years, we, as a City, get to pray for our local and national leaders – not a bad idea. And speaking of leadership, I want to thank outgoing mayor Greg Nordbak for his year of service as mayor, and welcome into office Cathy Warner, our new mayor. With Easter behind us, it is time to prepare for Mother’s Day. As we make our plans for this day, let’s remember to SHOP WHITTIER and members of the Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce. Whether it is flowers, dining out, cards, day spas and salons, or gifts, our retailers are prepared! If you need ideas, pull out the new Whittier Business Directory and let your fingers do the walking. Our directory is also available on line at www.whittierchamber.com. There will be a lot of networking and terrific silent auction items and appetizers supplied by our local restaurants. This is a “can’t miss it” event and don’t forget to wear ORANGE to show your Whittier Chamber connection. My hat is off to Carolyn Reggio, executive director of CAPC, for once again hosting this event. Our monthly networking breakfast, “Wake Up Whittier”, will be at the Whittier Hospital Medical Center on Wednesday, May 11. This month we are set for our annual “Salute to Service” where we honor our Whittier non-profit organizations. Enjoy great networking with over 200 chamber members, great food, fun and door prizes. You'll also be introduced to the terrific men and women of our community who do work behind the scenes and make Whittier a better place for us to live and work. If you have never been to this event, you will come away with a new appreciation for the word service. Our monthly networking lunch will be at Red Oak BBQ on Tuesday, May 31st. As a long-time resident of Whittier, I am pleased to serve a second term as Mayor of the City. I have deep respect for all the individuals who make up our great community. My continuing goals for the City of Whittier are to: 1) enhance public safety, 2) support proactive economic development, 3) maintain the infrastructure and 4) insure support for community programs. Please visit our new and improved website. The updated version went online in April 2011 with a fresh, new look that better personifies Whittier. The website now has ample features and capabilities to better meet the information needs of our community. Cathy Warner, More importantly, the functionality has been expanded to allow for Whittier City Mayor more eGovernment services and access to City information, 24-7. I invite you to explore the website and send us your comments or suggestions on how to improve it. Over the next year I will work with my fellow Council members and City staff to continue to support the men and women of the Whittier Police Department, improve our business environment, and find opportunities to maintain our City’s high quality of life by supporting infrastructure capital projects and community programs. It is my hope that the fiscal prudence and careful planning that has been done over the last five to six years will serve as a strong foundation from which our City can weather the recession and encourage a local recovery. We are living in interesting times that present serious challenges and significant opportunities for our community. I hope that you will join me in working to ensure that Whittier is successful in overcoming challenges and seizing opportunities for the benefit of ourselves and future generations of Whittier residents. Seminar Series Update: Do You Know the Value of Your Business?

The Whittier Uptown Association is pleased to announce that on March 22nd, our new Sunday Market Place event was approved by City Council and has been scheduled to begin in mid May. We believe all of our new events fill a need in the community and will bring new shoppers to the Uptown area. The New Sunday Market Place event will begin at 9 a.m. and take place in the parking lot between Vinatero Wine Shop and Sage Lounge & Restaurant along Greenleaf Ave. and will run until approximately 2 p.m. This event will allow up to 30 vendors to participate with a wide range of items. The Association is excited about this event and it will run every Sunday, featuring certified Allan Nakken, produce, beautiful floral designs, artisans, health foods, etc. Any Executive Director and all businesses are offered space in this event allowing for great diversity of products and services to be featured. Along with this, we also plan to have live musicians performing on the sidewalk area located above the lot. We believe this will bring more families to our Uptown boulevard and increase shopping and dining. The Uptown Association is also working together for the 11th Annual Hot Rod and Muscle Car show slated for August 20th. It is our intent for this car show to offer promotion of our local businesses and restaurants at the same time. We will not be importing food vendors this year, thus all car show entrants and viewers will visit our local restaurants during the show. We hope the Uptown membership is excited about this new opportunity to bring once again even more business to our valued merchants! The events have also created additional marketing opportunities for local businesses. Tax tips Tax Strategies for Unmarried Couples Typically, married couples pay lower taxes if they file joint returns rather than filing separately. However, if a couple is living together but not married, the two taxpayers can’t file jointly. Nevertheless, there are ways for unmarried cohabitants to reduce the household’s income tax bill. Determining the deductions The higher your tax bracket, the more tax you’ll save from a deduction Richard Scrivanich, that reduces your income. Example: Alice Johnson expects to have around $200,000 in taxable Harvey & Parmelee LLP income this year, which will put her in a 33% federal tax bracket. She lives with Richard Smith, who expects to have taxable income of $50,000, which will put him in the 25% tax bracket. This couple decides to contribute $1,000 to their favorite charity. If Alice writes the check, she’ll reduce her taxable income by $1,000 and save $330 in tax, at a 33% rate. If Richard writes a $1,000 check, he’ll save only $250. Therefore, it makes sense for Alice to make the couple’s charitable donations. Similarly, if this couple uses a mortgage to buy a home, Alice should write the checks to take the deduction at her tax rate. If they take out the mortgage loan together, it is a good idea for Alice to contact the lender to make sure that her Social Security number is on the report of mortgage interest that it files with the IRS. Alternative solutions In keeping with the previous example, in most cases Alice should also pay the real estate property tax to get the deduction in her higher tax bracket. However, Alice may find herself subject to the alternative minimum tax (AMT). Many moderate income and high income taxpayers owe the AMT if they use certain tax credits and deductions. Taxpayers who are subject to the AMT are allowed no federal tax deductions for state or local tax payments. As long as Richard is a co-owner of the house and not subject to the AMT, he can pay the property tax bills and take deductions to cut his federal income tax. Richard also should pay for items that qualify as miscellaneous itemized deductions, such as investment publications and tax preparation software. Miscellaneous deductions only save tax to the extent that they exceed 2% of your adjusted gross income, and Richard is more likely to clear that hurdle than Alice.

In such situations, the high bracket partner might transfer appreciated assets to the low bracket partner before an intended sale. WHAT’s COOL IN YOUR SCHOOL Pioneer High School Students Perform Annual Titanette Revue

Bill Schloss Appointed Principal of California High School

Pioneer High School students presented an original, high-energy dance extravaganza during the 48th annual Titanette Revue with the theme, “We’re Going to Disneyland.” Established in 1965, Titanette Revue is a long-standing Pioneer tradition where students, parents, alumni and friends work countless hours to produce original choreographed routines performed to music. The show attracted sold-out audiences in the school’s main gymnasium. Ticket sales from the dance showcase raise funds for the Pioneer High School Dance/ Drill Team that recently won its ninth national championship at the Miss Dance Drill Team USA competition held at the University of California, Irvine. Many of the students who perform in Titanette Review are also members of the Dance/Drill Team. “Titanette Review is a highlight of our school year and brings together Titans past and present in an exciting dance showcase that benefits our championship-winning Dance/Drill Team,” said Pioneer High School Principal Monica Oviedo. “The production is a tremendous collaborative effort and demonstrates the depth of our school spirit.” This year’s Titanette Revue featured performances to music inspired by Disneyland, with titles such as “Alice in Wonderland,” “Pinocchio,” “Atlantis,” “The Bride of Haunted Mansion,” “Tomorrowland,” “Fantasmic,” “’Disney Villains,” and “Hercules.” Marilynn Littlefield, a semi-retired Pioneer teacher who has been staff advisor for the Dance/Drill Team and Titanette Revue since 1965, said that this year, about 250 students were involved in the production. In addition, alumni, parents, grandparents and family members volunteer long hours during the eight weeks before the show to build sets, props, sew costumes, choreograph and polish dance performances, Littlefield said. “The show represents the hard work of our Pioneer students and their families and it always sells out,” Littlefield said. “The students either design their own choreography or work with a choreographer and, as it comes close to performance time, they rehearse seven days a week to put it all together.” Littlefield also credits the show’s success to the hard work of co-director Tamara Peterson, a counselor at Pioneer who has assisted Littlefield with the annual production for the past 31 years. Peterson works diligently communicating with students and parents and behind the scenes on props, special effects and the paperwork that the production requires. “There wouldn’t be a show without her,” Littlefield said. “She deserves accolades for all of the excellent work she does.” In addition to the joy of performing before sold-out crowds of adoring fans, the students also look forward to the competition involved. Students compete for Titanette Revue awards each year during the Saturday evening performance and are judged by dance teachers from other schools. This year, the top Sweepstakes award went to “The Bride of the Haunted Mansion.” The first place ribbon went to “Alice in Wonderland,” second place to “Disney Villains,” third place to Hercules, and fourth place to “Fantasmic.”

Noting his many years of experience as a skilled assistant principal and instructional leader in the District, the Whittier Union High School District Board of Trustees voted Tuesday to appoint Bill Schloss as the new Principal of California High School. “California High School is an excellent school with a talented and caring staff and I feel lucky to be asked to help them keep moving forward,” Schloss said of his appointment. “Cal High serves it students and community well and my job will be to support everyone there in the fantastic work they are doing.” Schloss was Whittier High School’s Assistant Principal of Curriculum for seven years and had been serving as Interim Principal of California High School since January when former California High School Principal Lynn Carmen Day took a position as Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services at the Covina Valley Unified School District. A native of Portland, Oregon, Schloss is the son of a teacher and a coach. He earned his bachelor’s and his master’s degrees in History from USC and began his teaching career at La Serna High School in 1993 and also served as an athletic coach. He taught for seven years before being promoted to La Serna’s Assistant Principal of Curriculum. He then moved to Whittier High School in 2003 to serve in the same capacity and was instrumental in implementing Whittier High’s rigorous academic programs that have fostered increased student achievement. Schloss has also earned several awards for leadership from the Association of California School Administrators Region XV and received his administrative services credential from Chapman University in 2002. “Bill Schloss is a highly capable, caring leader who will continue the tradition of excellence at California High School and will serve its students, faculty and staff with great dedication,” said Whittier Union High School District Superintendent Sandra Thorstenson. Contributions Sought for Chamber’s Educational Scholarship Fund The Whittier Chamber’s Education Committee is still seeking donations from the Whittier business community for its Educational Scholarship Fund, named in memory of Randy Basurto. Each year the Whittier Chamber recognizes deserving high school seniors from the Whittier Union High School District for their academic achievements and service to the community with a $500 academic scholarship. Each scholarship goes towards books, room and board or tuition for their first year of college. Last year, the Whittier Chamber was able to award three outstanding students and would like to increase that number this year to five if possible. “These students are the future of our community. Many have indicated their desire to return to the Whittier area as business owners, teachers and public servants. It is our responsibility to invest in these kids now for the future of our great City,” stated Jeannie McHatton, Education Committee chair. The Educational Scholarship Fund is named after Board member and volunteer Randy Keith Basurto who died in 1998 of a heart attack at the age of 46. Basurto worked for HealthFirst Medical Group as Medical Operations Manager and had been employed there for 7 years. Chamber members and friends of Randy are encouraged to donate to the cause. “The purpose of this scholarship is to remember Randy with a program that he was passionate about, and to support the youth of Whittier as they continue on with their education,” stated McHatton. In addition to funding, each of these partnerships will be supported by Team Depot, the Company's associate-led volunteer force. Fisher House Foundation provides comfort houses for the families of veteran and active duty military patients receiving medical care at major military and Veterans Affairs medical centers. The Home Depot Foundation is providing a one-year $500,000 grant to repair and enhance many of the organization's 54 existing houses. Where possible, Team Depot volunteers will complete the work, ranging from making bathrooms handicapped accessible, to painting and landscaping. Volunteers of America is one of the largest nonprofit providers of affordable housing in the U.S., with a focus specifically on veterans, low-income families with children, the disabled and senior citizens. The Home Depot Foundation is providing a three-year $1.8 million grant to repair and rehab properties where veterans and their families live. Firstyear projects include the rehabilitation of residential facilities in Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles and Miami, serving approximately 275 disabled and/or homeless veterans and their families at any given time. Each project will include numerous opportunities for Team Depot volunteers to get involved as well. The Mission Continues provides opportunities for returning veterans to serve as citizen leaders by leading volunteer projects in their communities or by completing fellowships with nonprofit organizations. Along with a $1.05 million grant from The Home Depot Foundation, Team Depot will work with volunteers from The Mission Continues to complete more than 100 community projects during 2011. In addition, a disabled veteran will be placed at The Home Depot Foundation for a six-month fellowship to assist with project management for all volunteer projects. The Foundation will continue to evaluate and add new partnerships to address veterans' housing issues. Chamber Honors Outstanding Volunteers Volunteer Of The Year

Ambassador Of The Year Susie Ausdal, Union Bank Members of the Whittier Chamber Ambassador Committee are a great group of people who serve as an extension of the Chamber staff. They attend numerous events throughout the month and help to make Whittier Chamber members feel welcome and valued. Each year, the Committee chooses one member who has exceeded expectations as an Ambassador. This year Susie Ausdal from Union Bank was chosen by her peers and recognized at the Chamber’s 97th Installation event as the 2010 Ambassador of the Year. Susie became an Ambassador in 2009. Since then she has rarely missed a ribbon cutting, is the first to volunteer to help at events, and provides a wonderful first impression as a greeter at Wake Up Whittier. Susie sees the value in networking and building business relationships and often brings her staff to Chamber events. Recently Susie was seen quietly breaking down tables and helping Chamber staff clean up after the Expo. She is a wonderful Chamber advocate, a help to our new members and an outstanding volunteer. The Chamber is proud to congratulate Susie and honor her with the 2010-2011 Ambassador of the Year award.

Jeff Ball, Friendly Hills Bank The Chamber is proud to honor Jeff Ball from Friendly Hills Bank with the 2010-2011Volunteer of the Year award for his continued service to the Whittier Chamber this year. Along with his participation on numerous other committees, Jeff has served the past year as the Chamber’s Finance Chair. Quietly and behind the scenes, he has helped the Chamber navigate through this challenging year by closely monitoring the budget on a monthly basis and streamlining reports. Under his leadership, the Chamber has maintained fiscal stability and has met or exceeded every goal. While Jeff spends hours as our Finance Chair, he does so much more than that. Jeff has been a go-to advisor on the Executive Committee and has been instrumental in issues of economic development and business legislation. Not only does Jeff make it a point to attend Chamber functions himself, he also understands the value of networking and allows his staff members to participate in numerous ways. For all he does for the Chamber, we are proud to recognize Jeff Ball as the Whittier Chamber Volunteer of the Year!

The Whittier Chamber has had a long standing relationship with ACRO Printing. ACRO joined the Whittier Chamber in 1991 and immediately got involved. We have had the privilege of having Bonnie serve on our Board of Directors as President in 2000 and again now on the Executive Committee as the VP of Special Events. Bonnie is also the current Chair of the Ambassador Committee and has participated on just about every committee there is at the Chamber! In addition to Bonnie, her daughter Sara has volunteered her time this past year as an Ambassador, and, in fact, you will usually see many ACRO staff members participating and networking at events like Wake Up Whittier, Cosmic Bowling and the Business Expo. Glenn also participates by golfing in the Chamber’s Hathaway Golf Classic each year. He spent many hours of his own personal time helping to restructure the Chamber staff which included conducting a search for a new Executive Director. His intimate understanding of business policies and human resource procedures has helped to improve the Chamber’s overall functionality and level of professionalism,” explained Harako at the Chamber’s 97th Installation Luncheon. In addition to chairing the Personnel Committee, John served as the VP of Administration on the Executive Committee. 10 Tips for Boosting Employee Morale As seen on www.inc.com

1. Recognize special events in the lives of your employees. Birthdays, weddings, births, the accomplishments of employee children—if you have a reason to celebrate, do it! Whether it is buying a round of coffee for the morning shift, or finding a nice greeting card for everyone to sign, celebrate the little things in your workplace. Have a monthly birthday party complete with cake. Gather all employees and have all the birthday people from the current month stand up, and the rest of the office sing to them. It's corny, and maybe a little embarrassing, but it helps put smiles on faces and cake in tummies. And really, who doesn't want cake? 2. Keep the conversation going. Encourage idea sharing, and make that sharing road a two-way street. Listening to the ideas of your employees is great, but it can only go so far if the employee doesn't know enough about business operations to present a viable idea. Try open-book management strategies. Supply employees with critical information and financial data and teach them what that information means so the can influence the company's collective success. Keep your employees informed and ensure they understand you are willing to listen to their input and continue that discussion. 3. Recognize and reward your employees for doing good work. "People want to feel valued," Paul Spiegelman, founder and CEO of Beryl, a call-center company based in Texas, explained. Tell your employees they are doing a good job verbally, or write a little note. Have pizza parties for meeting your monthly goals as a company. Do what you think is appropriate for your business environment, but be sure your employees understand that you value you their work, and they are fabulous people. There is one caveat. Singling people out for good behavior can sometimes work as a disincentive on a larger scale. Instead of giving all your praise to the superstars, try rewarding everyone for the achievements of the few and reinforce teamwork.

6. Build a culture of trust. Trust is everything in a relationship, be it romantic, friendly, or business-oriented. It is essential to build and cultivate trusting business relationships for success and survival. Try this three-tiered approach to building trust with your employees: Capability trust: allow people to make decisions, involve them in discussions, and trust in their opinions and input. Contractual trust: keep agreements and manage employee expectations. Communication trust: share information, provide constructive feedback and speak with good purpose about others. 7. Encourage work breaks. Smokers seem to get the better end of this stick, ducking out for a quick cigarette every couple of hours—which they are completely entitled to have. Remind your non-smoking personnel, and everyone else, to take breaks. Walk around the block. Go for some coffee. Work goes much faster when you are refreshed and ready to take on the assignment after a break, and it keeps employees from getting stir crazy. Have stubborn workaholics in your office? Make your breaks "mandatory." Put out some treats in the office kitchen and call everyone over for a snack. It'll get people interacting with their coworkers, and give everyone a much-deserved break. 8. Employee people "engines." Kevin Plank, founder of Under Armour, suggests strategically placing innately passionate and inspired individuals around your organization to help keep other employees focused, motivated, and happy. "When you find people with these characteristics, use them wisely. They'll certainly make your job easier, especially when it comes to keeping the rest of the team motivated," he says.

4. Make the workplace comfortable. "Designing a comfortable environment is about more than aesthetics; careful attention to design can give a boost to employee happiness," says Lois Goodell, principal and the director of interior design at CBT Architects. You'll need more than just cushy chairs and ergonomic desks, for this (though those would be great, too. Comfy chairs soothe the soul.) Make small adjustments to your lighting scheme and bring in fun desk lamps if you can't banish the overhead fluorescent glare, or open curtains to allow for natural light if you have windows. Keep the office temperature at a comfortable level, and make sure all the technology needed to do the job is available.

9. Build a culture of employee appreciation. Cash incentives and public recognition, while nice, don't always make your employees feel totally appreciated. Take some of your short-term morale boosters, like recognizing good work with handshake and a smile, or idea sharing, and turn it into a business lifestyle. Thanking employees face-to-face on a regular basis may also help improve their ability to accept constructive criticism, says Rick Maurer, a consultant based in Arlington, Va. "If you make it clear that you are trying to make employees better at what they do, positive and negative feedback become a regular part of the conversation," he says.

5. Smile more. The social environment at work is a big contributor to burnout, says Elizabeth Scott, a wellness coach at About.com. The CEO's demeanor can directly affect the staff, as workers read the mood of the boss for clues about performance and job security. So, smile more often, talk about fun things like hobbies with employees, or crack a joke—just make sure it's done in good taste. These steps will help to boost morale, encourage team building and even stave off job burnout.

10. Have fun. Spiegelman also encourages wacky team building exercises, which could range from weeks-long murder mysteries to an all day off-site activity, like laser tag. Pick a Friday and make your "place of duty" be a laser tag venue. Have different games and mix the teams for every game so everyone has a chance to bond with everyone else. Nothing builds morale faster than shooting opposing teams with little lasers in a rousing game of capture the flag.

AROUND TOWN Student Chamber to Visit State Capitol During Annual Sacramento Trip

The Whittier Chamber needs your help! Each year the Student Chamber of Commerce takes a day trip to Sacramento for a tour of the State Capitol and to see California lawmakers at work. The students meet very early in the morning, take a bus to the airport, fly up to Sacramento, tour the city by bus, visit the Capitol, enjoy a meet and greet with various legislators, listen in on at least one bill and fly home the same day. The Whittier Chamber of Commerce knows this could be a life-changing experience for these local students and would greatly appreciate donations to help make the trip possible for each student. Family Celebrates Life of Beloved Community Member Who Passed Away

Mel Gilman – July 1926 to March 2011 – co-founder of Gilman Associates and GM Properties in Whittier, passed away March 30, 2011. A gentleman with a big heart; beloved brother, father of two daughters, grandfather of five and great grandfather, cherished soul-mate to his love Kathy Saylor, uncle, Papa Mel to his adopted family members, mentor, businessman, master mason, real estate developer and humanitarian. Mel Gilman touched the lives of so many in his 84 years. Mel leaves a tremendous legacy in Whittier, Santa Fe Springs and surrounding communities with the many skillfully designed and hand crafted buildings, using his magnificent masonry skills to add wonderfully crafted brick designs into the buildings. A businessman with a penchant for learning and educating, he was a mentor and friend to many in the commercial real estate arena in the Whittier area. “We will miss Mel and all his wisdom” explains Jason Jamison, owner of GM Properties. “He was a loving and gracious man with an amazing understanding for business. I am honored & fortunate to have worked with him these past 14 years. He made an everlasting impact as a mentor, partner and friend.” A family man and believer of the arts, Mel left a collection of poems, photos and memories of the life he lived, and live he did. He imparted the love of family and the belief of family-time in those he loved and worked with; a complex man, with a heart of gold. “Bike to Work Day” Pit Stop at Greenway Trail

A free “Bicycle Pit Stop” will be held for bicycling commuters on California “Bike to Work Day” on Thursday, May 19th at the Greenway Trail, Palm Park Trailhead, 5703 Palm Avenue. The event will be held from 7 to 9:30 a.m. and will include free refreshments, prizes, giveaways, information booths and bicycle displays. Two local bicycle shops, G’s Cyclery and Whittier Cyclery, will have displays on the newest bicycles and bike accessories. AROUND TOWN Beverly Hospital Technician Receives LifeSaver Award

Mary Costabile, registered nurse, is best known for her heroics in the Cath Lab assisting in saving the lives of patients who come in for heart emergencies. But recently Mary experienced a personal emergency of her own. While eating lunch alone in her office, Mary swallowed a piece of meat that became lodged in her breathing tube. “I knew I was in trouble at that point because I couldn’t take a breath,” commented Mary. After hearing the voices of co-workers just outside of her office, quick thinking lead Mary out into the hallway. Gesturing in panic, and her face changing colors, Mary pointed to her throat. Tom Dailey, a CT/MRI technician and Mary’s co-worker, immediately responded by administering the Heimlich maneuver. After five repeated thrusts, Mary motioned to keep going. She was not out of danger and her face was turning blue. Adjusting the position slightly, Tom continued with the maneuver. Suddenly, a bite-size chunk of meat flew out onto the floor, just in time as Mary was beginning to lose consciousness. “I was so happy to be alive that I kept grabbing everyone and hugging them," referring to co-workers Rick, Sal and Chris who had been there throughout the ordeal to lend assistance. “Tom is my hero and every time I see him I just want to hug him. I feel secure in knowing that the people I work with at Beverly Hospital are skilled, quick thinking and properly trained,” Mary continued. Tom is a skilled CT/MRI technician who is acquainted with the possibility of being a part of life saving situations involving patients as he performs emergency Cat Scans and MRIs on a regular basis. However, he admits he has never been faced with saving the life of someone he works with every day. Nonetheless, he credits his abilities to the training he received at Beverly Hospital which teaches one to stabilize the situation first, stay calm and not to panic. He’s also thankful to his co-workers Sal Martinez, Chris Marumoto and Rick MacLaughlin for their assistance in making sure the technique was administered properly. As a show of appreciation, Beverly Hospital presented Tom Dailey with the Lifesaver Award, along with a package of lifesaver candies and other deserving gifts. Aside from providing training for all levels of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to healthcare providers, Beverly Hospital is also involved in Community CPR. The Family and Friends, Heart-Saver and AED CPR Training Programs have become very popular and the most requested of the community groups (i.e. Senior Centers, Shopping Mall Security Staff and School Mary Costabile and District). City of Whittier Celebrates Founders Day with Festivities

It began in 1984 when Jonathan Bailey and friends planned a picnic to honor the “old folk” instrumental in the founding of their little town of Whittier. This was the official birth of the Founders Day event and picnic which has been celebrated each year since its inception. In the wake of the city’s reduced funding this year, the 117th Founders Day has been organized by a small committee of active citizens under the sponsorship and direction of the Friends of the Bailey House, First Friends Church, the Whittier Conservancy and the Whittier Historical Society. The date is Saturday, May 14th, 2011 (always held the 2nd Saturday in May) and the picnic will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Central Park located off of Bailey St. and Friends Ave. in Uptown Whittier. As usual, the Whittier High School Band will open the ceremonies following the flag salute. Other musical groups include the East Whittier Middle School Jazz Band, The Choralaires, Whittier’s famous Salt Box Players and the Mark’s Men Dance Band. Throughout the day there will be children’s games, prizes, a maypole dance, an old fashioned cake walk and a mustache contest. Booths will include books, homemade breads and other fresh foods, artists, crafts, face painting and information on local organizations in Whittier.
