PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
MAYOR’S MESSAGE
As I write my second “President’s Message,” I want to let you know what a privilege it is to be part of this great organization. For me, last month’s highlight was our “Salute to Service” program at our Wake Up Whittier networking breakfast. At this event we featured many of the nonprofit organizations that make Whittier such a terrific place to live and work. My thanks to Mayor Cathy Warner for taking the time to join us and update us on the issues our City Council is addressing. Our Chamber’s ribbon cuttings continue to be important events for our business community. They allow us to highlight some of Ben Greer, the business entrepreneurs who have invested their resources in the GM Properties Whittier area and congratulate them on their success. On May 12, I attended a ribbon cutting for Dr. Ted Tanabe that showcased his new office on Hadley. As a commercial broker, I had been in this office before and it was – to say the least – not impressive. However, yesterday was a great example of an individual investing in his business; Dr. Tanabe had completely remodeled his suite and had his entire staff there to showcase his business. I love to see this commitment and investment in Whittier, congratulations Dr. Tanabe! This month I will again get to emcee our Wake Up Whittier networking breakfast which will be at Don Steves Autoplex. This event is now on the 3rd Wednesday of every month, which will be June 15, so mark your calendars accordingly. Come and rub shoulders with your Whittier Chamber business partners and city officials. For further networking, our Tasty Tuesday networking lunch will be on Tuesday, June 28 at Fenix 5-4 in Uptown Whittier. Fenix 5-4 is another example of a Whittier business entrepreneur turning a “tired” space into a terrific new restaurant in Uptown. Congratulations and thanks to owner Kyle Koestner for investing in our city! If you are new to the Chamber, check out our new member orientation on Thursday, June 9th. This event will be held at the Chamber office from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Come and get a heads up on what the Chamber is about and how it can benefit you and your business. This event is open to new representatives to Chamber member business as well as those who would like a refresher course on Chamber benefits. One of my favorite events every year is the State of the City Address which will be presented by Mayor Cathy Warner along with City Manager Steve Helvey. This will take place on June 22 at the Whittier Area Community Church from 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. There are a lot of key issues before the Council including the proposed changes to the Whittier Blvd Specific Plan. This event is open to the public and we encourage you to attend and discover the good things that are happening in our City…Whittier really is an amazing place. We encourage you to also attend the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life over Father’s Day weekend. You are welcome to join the Whittier Chamber’s team, or participate through one of the many other teams raising money at this event. Having lost my Father to cancer, I have found this a very moving event and worthy of my support.
Congratulations to the Whittier Community Foundation for the beautiful Whittier Police Memorial that now adorns our City Hall campus. The Council and I also want to extend our gratitude to all the community members and business owners who supported the Memorial with your generous donations. This privately-funded artwork sculpted by California artist Alanna Roth is entitled “The Final Salute.” The sculpture honors the men and women of the Whittier Police Department and especially the two Whittier police officers who gave their lives in the line of duty: Officer John Pierce and Officer Mike Lane. If you have not had a chance to see it, I Cathy Warner, encourage you to come by City Hall to view the beautiful artwork. Whittier City Mayor Business and property owners should be aware that during last month’s Budget Study Session, the City Council voted to extend the Local Economic Stimulus and Business Assistance Plan’s incentives that were due to expire at the end of this month. The fee subsidies on planning and building permits and fee reductions on temporary banner sign permits were designed to help you save money during the recession. The City Council remains committed to assist the business community particularly during these trying times. For more information on the Local Economic Stimulus and Business Assistance Plan visit Community Development on the City’s website at www.cityofwhittier.org or call (562) 567-9320. This month, the Council will review the recommendations by the Planning Commission on the Whittier Boulevard Specific Plan (WBSP). Business and property owners will have an opportunity to weigh in on the proposed modifications at a public hearing this month. The WBSP is the City’s guideline for future development on the Boulevard and is being updated to address unanticipated changes to business patterns primarily brought on by the recession. The proposed changes still reflect the original vision and goals of the document from 2005. Please visit the City’s website at www.cityofwhittier.org for more information and updates. As a reminder, last month the City changed the City Council meeting agenda order for a 90-day trial period. The City Council will continue to meet at 6:30 PM; however, the order of the agenda has changed. The Council meetings will now begin with Closed Session. The City Council will reconvene in public session at 7:30 PM and continue with Presentations, Oral Communications and other business items. For more information on the City Council meetings, please visit the City website at www.cityofwhittier.org. Finally, thanks to the Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce for planning the State of the City Address on June 22 at the Whittier Area Community Church. We look forward to seeing you there!
Happy Father’s Day!

UPTOWN UPDATE
KNABE KORNER
On May 1st, the Whittier Uptown Board of Directors spent a day at the Radisson Hotel for our annual Board Retreat. The event was designed to be a full day focused on how to provide better support for the community and our membership. The agenda allowed us to formally study our by laws together so that all new Board members fully understood that our Association is governed by these guidelines. We looked at four financial goals and reviewed each of the Association's events. One of our objectives for the retreat was to come away with a fresh vision of where we want to take the Association. Together we would like to make safety, lighting, and signage major objectives for the next year in order to improve our environment in Uptown. Allan Nakken, We are also taking a close look at our W.U.A. logo in hopes of Executive Director simplifying what we say to the public. We collectively believe that branding our logo is important. If Uptown is a destination, let’s determine why the public comes to Uptown and begin to capitalize on that. Events in Uptown are always a priority. On April 23rd we completed another successful Antique Faire with several thousand shoppers filling the streets. We are just weeks away from commencing our newest event, the Sunday Market Place that will be held in the Uptown parking lot alongside Greenleaf Ave. between Hadley and Bailey. The Sunday Market Place Event has been created to attract local and surrounding communities to visit, shop and dine in Uptown Whittier. This weekly event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each Sunday of the year. This new vibrant event is a collection of Certified Local growers, artisans, crafts and shopping booths, as well as live music performed by local musicians that will create a unique ambience for the Uptown experience. We would like to encourage everyone and their families to come out and “Experience the Goodness in Uptown!” On August 20th we will hold our 11th Annual Hot Rod and Muscle Car Show. We have been working diligently to bring back to Whittier the hot rods and muscle cars that once filled our streets. Last year’s car count was reduced to approximately 350 cars. With two additional classes of cars, we hope to exceed 500 cars this August. Our Wednesday Night Family Fair is off and running and we are very pleased with the event thus far. We are doing our best to bring diversity and value to Uptown and one of the main objectives is to bring over 300,000 shoppers to the streets of Uptown, which we hope will bring revenue to our merchants. We are grateful for our great relationship with the Chamber and have agreed to co sponsor the Relay For Life that will be held at Cal High on June 18th and 19th. We need walkers to support this fine event. If you are interested in participating, please call the Association for details at (562) 696-2662 or visit us online at www.WhittierUptown.org.
Fixing the System for Those Most in Need During these challenging economic times, governments across the U.S. are facing unprecedented challenges to their ability to deliver services. Nowhere is that more apparent than in the nation’s largest county – Los Angeles County. As the ultimate safety net for those most in need, we must examine our largest expenditures and determine how we can maximize scarce taxpayer resources. Without question, the single largest growth in County Don Knabe, expenditures is the General Relief (GR) program. This is a stateLos Angeles County mandated program that requires counties to provide assistance Supervisor, 4th District to indigent adults who do not qualify for other benefits. As of December 2010, the County’s GR caseload consisted of 70 percent of the total statewide population receiving General Relief, making it more than 80 times larger than the GR caseload for Riverside, San Bernardino, and Orange Counties, combined. On top of these already sizeable demands on our system, the economic crisis has increased the number of people needing our services, due to a foreclosure or job loss. Many families are using County services for the first time, desperate for help. We have seen our caseload soar: up 73 percent over the past three years, from 63,000 to 109,000, with a dramatic increase in costs to the County from $148 million to $219 million. Behind these numbers lies another troubling statistic: nearly one-third of the entire GR caseload is not pursuing either employment or disability benefits, the two routes off of General Relief. This cannot continue. Currently, individuals on GR receive about $221 in cash and about $120 in food stamps per month. For those seeking employment or disability benefits, nothing would change. For those not pursuing either option and just receiving cash, we would substitute a $297 housing voucher. This motion is not meant to punish those who are currently on General Relief, but to put a stop to endless cash assistance for those who are not playing by the rules of the program. Unfortunately, Los Angeles County also has an affordable housing issue. With some of the savings and reduced costs from the GR program that we expect to see given the experiences of other jurisdictions, we can help alleviate this housing problem. The County would direct 50 percent of the cost savings into a newly established General Relief Anti-Homelessness Account, while the additional 50 percent would go into the County’s General Fund. The County has historically worked proactively to get out in front of fiscal problems. By restructuring the General Relief program, we have an opportunity to do just that. The time to act is now, before further challenges brought forth by the state and the federal budget situation force decisions that would not benefit anyone, let alone the people most in need. For more information on other local issues, contact the office of Supervisor Don Knabe at (213) 974-4444 or read more interesting posts from his blog at www.knabe.com/dons-blog.

Whittier Community Foundation Dedicates Police Memorial The Whittier Community Foundation recently held a formal dedication of the Whittier Police Memorial on Friday, May 20th. The privately-funded sculpture was placed in front of the new Whittier Police Station, 13200 Penn Street, to honor the men and women who make up the Whittier police force. Funding for the Police Memorial was raised by the Whittier Community Foundation, a non-profit group which raises funds for project and programs to benefit the local community. The Memorial is a gift to the City and the Police Department from the Foundation. The Whittier Police Memorial, designed by California artist Alanna Roth, is entitled “The Final Salute” and features a sculpture of a police officer saluting a fallen comrade, while his hand rests on the shoulder of the fallen officer’s child, who holds an American flag. Two Whittier police officers have been killed in the line of duty over the years, Mike Lane and John Pierce. Lane was killed on December 13, 1979 from gunshot wounds and Pierce died on May 16, 1977 from injuries suffered during an assault. Family members of both fallen officers were in attendance at the ceremony where they were honored for the sacrifice they endured. The dedication ceremony included tributes to Lane and Pierce by their former colleagues, along with other activities to honor Whittier’s police force. Artist Roth also spoke about the effect the creation of this sculpture has had on her life. “Our police officers put their lives on the line every time they go to work,” said Fran Shields, Director of Parks, Recreation and Community Services, “The Memorial will show how much the community appreciates their courage and dedication, and this donation shows that the Whittier community does support our police force.” Following the dedication ceremony, light refreshments were served in the Police Station community room and patio for friends, family and community members. For further information on the recent dedication and the memorial, please contact Shields at (562) 567-9460 or at fshields@cityofwhittier.org.

Tax tips Two Sides to Mortgage Prepayments Prepaying your home mortgage can be tempting these days, compared to the alternatives. You’ll earn next to nothing putting money into bank accounts and money market funds. Tax-deferred accounts such as 401(k) plans may be unappealing if you fear you’ll withdraw money at higher tax rates in the future. Inside or outside a 401(k), you might not want to hold too much of your net worth in the volatile stock market. By contrast, paying down your home mortgage may be a safe way Richard Scrivanich, Harvey & Parmelee to put extra cash to good use. You’ll reduce the amount of interest LLP you pay to your lender. In case of a financial emergency, you might be happy to have a lighter debt load. Mortgage prepayments may make sense–but they may not. Typically, the decision to pay down your mortgage is half financial and half emotional. Focus on finance To determine the financial pros and cons of a mortgage prepayment, run the numbers. Chances are, your home mortgage interest rate is 6% or less because rates have been in this neighborhood for a few years. As of this writing, the national average rate for a 30 year fixed mortgage is 4.8%. If you have a mortgage with a much higher rate and you have sufficient home equity, refinancing can be a good choice. Assuming that you have a mortgage with an interest rate around 5%, the numbers are not hard to crunch. Say your effective income tax rate (federal and state) is around 30%. Your total tax savings from deducting your interest payments would be about 1.5%: 30% times 5%. If you pay 5% in interest and save 1.5% in tax, your after-tax cost of the mortgage is 3.5% in this hypothetical example. In this case, prepaying your mortgage would produce an after-tax return of 3.5%: that’s the annual rate of interest you’d avoid paying with each prepayment. Moreover, that’s a 3.5% return, after tax, without the investment risk you’d assume by putting money into stocks or bonds. Does it make sense to pay down a 5% mortgage for a risk-free after tax return of around 3.5%? Perhaps, if you have a large amount of money in low yielding bank accounts or money market funds. However, you should realize that using cash to prepay your mortgage reduces your access to money you might need in the future.
www.californiaarborist.com
California Arborist State License #748668
Emotional reactions On paper, you have a good chance of earning a return higher than 3.5% after tax, from other investments. Even after the bear markets during the previous decade, the broad stock market has posted returns of about 9% over the last 20 years. Despite the historical record, you may prefer a sure 3% return from a mortgage prepayment to a potential 6%, 8%, or 10% return from stocks or other investments. Retirees especially might choose to prepay a mortgage rather than investing; they may like the idea of not having a mortgage now that they’re no longer earning income. Similarly, pre-retirees often have a goal of being debt free, with no monthly mortgage to pay, by the time they retire.

member spotlight Gus Arriaza, Local Cartridge World Franchisee, Says Supporting Small Businesses is Crucial to Economic Growth in America
National Small Business Week recognizes the contributions of small businesses to local and national economy During the week of May 16th-20th, business leaders and government officials gathered for National Small Business Week to celebrate the contributions of small business owners who provide stability to the US economy. As a leading partner to small businesses, and with hundreds of locally-owned and operated stores nationwide including Cartridge World - Whittier, Cartridge World is a vital part of this community. Small businesses are key to the economic wellbeing of this country. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), small businesses create 60-80 percent of all new jobs in the country. More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business. The entrepreneurial spirit behind the estimated 27.2 million small businesses in America continues to drive innovation and increases our country's competitiveness in the global economy while also creating jobs. Despite growth, the current economic climate has not been easy for small business owners. In a recent survey of small business office managers across the nation commissioned by Cartridge World, 34 percent of respondents said they are working with decreased budgets compared to two years ago and 79 percent of office managers told Cartridge World that in the past two years their job responsibilities have increased. Cartridge World is dedicated to providing solutions to small businesses that need help the most. “Many in our business community are concerned about cost and value in these times and we are committed to helping our local small business customers,” says Gus Arriaza, owner of Cartridge World - Whittier. Cartridge World's national network of retailers provides high quality ink and toner printer cartridges to large and small businesses and institutions. Their focus on remanufactured and refilled cartridges helps small businesses keep their costs low, while being able to rely on a great product. Franchise organizations like Cartridge World provide entrepreneurs with a compelling business opportunity, even in a difficult economy. While each Cartridge World store is individually owned and operated, franchisees benefit from the established marketing, financial and organizational guidelines and procedures provided by the parent corporation. This operational framework provides the security; experience and expertise that can help a small business thrive, even in a difficult economy.
"Cartridge World - Whittier combines the quality, consistency and economies of a large corporation with a local focus," said Arriaza. "We work with local schools to help them implement conservation programs, we help local hospitals and other institutions continue to deliver their services in a time of shrinking budgets, and we help other local small businesses cut costs and increase profits. We're proud of the contribution we make to our local business community, and grateful to our customers who understand the critical contribution that small businesses make to the overall economic health of America." WHAT’s COOL IN YOUR SCHOOL Whittier Union High Schools in Top Third Among Similar Schools in State Whittier Union High School District’s five comprehensive high schools continue to rank among the top third among the state’s high schools with similar demographics, according to results from the 2010 Base Academic Performance Index (API) report released today by the California State Department of Education (CDE). The similar schools rank is similar to the statewide rank, except that each school is ranked relative to a group of 100 schools determined to be similar to the comparison school based on certain school, student, and teacher characteristics. California and La Serna High schools both ranked a 10 among similar schools. Santa Fe and Whittier High School both ranked a 9 and Pioneer High School ranked an 8 among similar schools. Only eight other comprehensive high schools in Los Angeles County received a 10 in their similar schools rank. Also, only Whittier Union and ABC Unified School District in Cerritos had two high schools that received a similar schools ranking of 10 -- magnets and specialized charter schools not included. At the state level, Whittier Union was one of only 12 districts to have more than one high school rank a 10 among similar schools. Out of all of the comprehensive high schools in California, only 51 ranked a 10 among similar schools and La Serna and California high schools were the 8th and the 2nd largest schools on the list respectively – 21 of the schools listed had less than 1,000 students. “It is gratifying to see that our schools continue to rank among the top schools in the state,” said Superintendent Sandra Thorstenson. “Continued growth in academic achievement is a challenge to maintain at the high school level, especially when one considers the deep budget cuts we continue to make due to extreme reductions in state funding.” “In our case, the school ranks are more positive evidence supporting the work our faculty and staff have undertaken through our “Whatever It Takes” initiative,” Thorstenson said. “We remain focused and dedicated to ensuring that all students continue to achieve at higher levels.” API ranks should be considered along with other student achievement data in order to get a comprehensive view of how well the Whittier Union High School District is educating and preparing students for higher education and careers, Thorstenson said. During the last six years Whittier Union’s District API has increased by 143 points, well over the state average of 59 points. In addition all five comprehensive high schools are in the 91st to 98th percentile for API growth out of 987 comprehensive high schools in California. In addition, 99.4 percent of Whittier Union’s class of 2010 met the CAHSEE requirement for graduation, the graduation rate is above 90 percent, 45 percent of students are completing all courses required for entrance into a four-year university and more than 80 percent of Whittier Union’s graduates go on to attend a four-year college, community college, or technical education college. “Our data continues to show that when you set high expectations for students and provide them with a quality instructional program and the support they need to reach those higher
levels of academic achievement, they will meet or exceed those expectations,” Thorstenson said. “We will continue to set the bar high for all of our students and do ‘Whatever It Takes’ to help them reach those goals so that they graduate well prepared for the challenges of college and careers.”
Whittier Union Teachers Participate in NBC Education Town Hall Twenty Whittier Union High School District teachers were selected to appear on NBC’s Education Nation Teacher Town Hall which can be viewed online at http://www.educationnation.com Whittier Union’s teachers were among 350 representatives of the Southern California teaching community in the studio audience. The Teacher Town Hall was broadcast live from NBC’s studios in Burbank and provided a forum for area educators to brainstorm ideas and solutions for reinventing education in America, talk about what works in the classroom and discuss the challenges of today’s education system. “Our country has historically made its best decisions after careful consideration and public debate,” said Jack Ketchem, a history teacher at California High School who was chosen to be a panelist. “I am delighted that NBC is facilitating this national dialogue and that teachers’ voices are included at the forefront. “I am especially proud to have had the opportunity to represent Whittier Union since our District has worked so hard to remain on the cutting edge of educational reform and excellence,” he said. During the last nine years, Whittier Union has become a nationally recognized leader in educational equity and reform. The District’s teachers have been at the forefront of Whittier Union’s transformation into a high-achieving district of five comprehensive high schools serving 13,680 students. “This was a great opportunity for our teachers to share the ground breaking work they have done to increase student achievement by improving instructional practices and augmenting student support through our ‘Whatever It Takes’ initiative,” said Whittier Union High School District Superintendent Sandra Thorstenson. “They know firsthand how our efforts are helping all of our students to achieve at higher levels.” Twenty teachers represented Whittier Union at the NBC Education Teacher Town Hall. OFFICE LIFE 10 Time-Management Tips That Work
Are you working on clock time or 'real' time? Learn how to manage your day by understanding the difference. By Joe Mathews, Don Debolt and Deb Percival www.entrepreneur.com Chances are good that, at some time in your life, you've taken a time-management class, read about it in books, and tried to use an electronic or paper-based day planner to organize, prioritize and schedule your day. "Why, with this knowledge and these gadgets," you may ask, "do I still feel like I can't get everything done I need to?" The answer is simple. Everything you ever learned about managing time is a complete waste of time because it doesn't work. Before you can even begin to manage time, you must learn what time is. A dictionary defines time as "the point or period at which things occur." Put simply, time is when stuff happens. There are two types of time: clock time and real time. In clock time, there are 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour, 24 hours in a day and 365 days in a year. All time passes equally. When someone turns 50, they are exactly 50 years old, no more or no less. In real time, all time is relative. Time flies or drags depending on what you're doing. Two hours at the department of motor vehicles can feel like 12 years. And yet our 12-year-old children seem to have grown up in only two hours. Which time describes the world in which you really live, real time or clock time? The reason time-management gadgets and systems don't work is that these systems are designed to manage clock time. Clock time is irrelevant. You don't live in or even have access to clock time. You live in real time, a world in which all time flies when you are having fun or drags when you are doing your taxes. The good news is that real time is mental. It exists between your ears. You create it. Anything you create, you can manage. It's time to remove any self-sabotage or self-limitation you have around "not having enough time," or today not being "the right time" to start a business or manage your current business properly. There are only three ways to spend time: thoughts, conversations and actions. Regardless of the type of business you own, your work will be composed of those three items. As an entrepreneur, you may be frequently interrupted or pulled in different directions. While you cannot eliminate interruptions, you do get a say on how much time you will spend on them and how much time you will spend on the thoughts, conversations and actions that will lead you to success.
Practice the following techniques to become the master of your own time: 1. Carry a schedule and record all your thoughts, conversations and activities for a week. This will help you understand how much you can get done during the course of a day and where your precious moments are going. You'll see how much time is actually spent producing results and how much time is wasted on unproductive thoughts, conversations and actions. 2. Any activity or conversation that's important to your success should have a time assigned to it. To-do lists get longer and longer to the point where they're unworkable. Appointment books work. Schedule appointments with yourself and create time blocks for high-priority thoughts, conversations, and actions. Schedule when they will begin and end. Have the discipline to keep these appointments. 3. Plan to spend at least 50 percent of your time engaged in the thoughts, activities and conversations that produce most of your results. 4. Schedule time for interruptions. Plan time to be pulled away from what you're doing. Take, for instance, the concept of having "office hours." Isn't "office hours" another way of saying "planned interruptions?" 5. Take the first 30 minutes of every day to plan your day. Don't start your day until you complete your time plan. The most important time of your day is the time you schedule to schedule time. 6. Take five minutes before every call and task to decide what result you want to attain. This will help you know what success looks like before you start. And it will also slow time down. Take five minutes after each call and activity to determine whether your desired result was achieved. If not, what was missing? How do you put what's missing in your next call or activity? 7. Put up a "Do not disturb" sign when you absolutely have to get work done. 8. Practice not answering the phone just because it's ringing and e-mails just because they show up. Disconnect instant messaging. Don't instantly give people your attention unless it's absolutely crucial in your business to offer an immediate human response. Instead, schedule a time to answer email and return phone calls. 9. Block out other distractions like Facebook and other forms of social media unless you use these tools to generate business. 10. Remember that it's impossible to get everything done. Also remember that odds are good that 20 percent of your thoughts, conversations and activities produce 80 percent of your results.
Stressed Much? The ProAdjuster is the Answer.
Got Stress?
What comes to mind when you hear the word stress? Are you thinking about interacting with your boss or your spouse? Or are you thinking about the amount of money you need to pay for the next credit card? Stress means different things to different people, depending upon who you are, where you are from and how you handle what comes at you day after day. A recent APA Survey conducted in 2004 stated that 54% of Americans are concerned about the level of stress in their everyday lives. When you’re stressed your body doesn’t want to cooperate as well and you ache, feel fatigued, or have mood swings. You may not feel the effects of stress immediately, but over time, it takes a powerful toll on our bodies, slowly breaking them down.

NETWORKING QUOTE Telecommunications services are historically not received very well due to sales representatives who were distant from the community in which they serviced. The interaction, with the Whittier Chamber and its constituents, has helped me to realize, extending myself to Whittier businesses as a consultant, helping them understand how to save on overhead and generate business allows for more money to stay in Whittier. I have been welcomed by many businesses and groups, such as Diana Gonzalez at Advanced Benefit Center, Andres Portillo at Dominos Pizza, WRHAP (Whittier Rio Hondo Aids Project), Team Referral Network and many more. All are Cbeyond customers or have sat down for a consultation. I have developed relationships with them all because of the Whittier Chamber of Commerce. I can’t thank the Whittier Chamber Staff enough for their help and trust, and allowing me the opportunity to be a part of such a great community; to be a part of the Chamber, and be a part of Whittier. - Cicero Salmon III

Chamber Member Performs New Alternative Health Procedure
Healthways Medical Group is excited to offer a new non surgical medical procedure called PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma). This procedure is used for healing a variety of musculoskeletal problems ranging from acute conditions like muscle sprains and tendonitis to chronic pain due to arthritis. It is especially good as an alternative to surgeries as it enables the body to heal itself without risking operation. In the procedure, a few tablespoons of the patient’s blood is removed and then processed in a centrifuge. The platelet rich plasma portion of the blood which contains the growth factors are then reintroduced into the patients damaged areas to initiate new healing. PRP is effective because it delivers growth factors directly into an injury in higher doses than the body can apply naturally. Because the process uses patients' own blood and the body's natural healing process, the therapy has minimal side effects. The procedure has been done with success on pro athletes such as Tiger Woods and Hines Ward, and is even safe and effective on the elderly population. PRP is being utilized in many medical offices now across the nation. If you are trying to avoid surgery and want to get back in good health, call for a free consultation. The procedure is covered partially with most types of insurance. For more information contact Healthways Medical Group at (562) 698-7161.

AROUND TOWN Symphony Announces Upcoming Free Concert Season
The Whole Child Celebrates Children’s Awareness Month With Additional Services
June is Children’s Awareness Month and in celebration of children and their emotional well-being, The Whole Child has expanded its specialized services for community children and their parents through programs in local schools. Counselors from The Whole Child have created groups focused on helping children in three specific areas: ADHD (Loads of Energy), preventing bullying (Talking Stick) and self esteem (It Feels Good to Be Me). These programs benefit children’s emotional health and allow them to thrive in school. These expanded services have been made possible as a result of the agency’s successful fundraising benefit, The Heart of a Child Gala, where over $100,000 was donated by generous individuals, companies, hospitals, local governments and foundations, all coming together to exemplify the true meaning of philanthropy. The Whole Child has provided counseling and child abuse-prevention services since 1957. For information about these services and others, contact The Whole Child at (562) 692-0383.

“Tax Tips” - Continued from page 5
The bottom line is there is no answer that’s right for everyone. If you have ample income and sizeable net worth, you may prize the tax deductions you get with every mortgage payment. If you’re far from retirement and comfortable about your financial future, you may like the idea of putting extra cash into stocks and other assets with the potential for superior long-term returns. Carrying a mortgage has drawbacks, though. If you’d rather reduce your financial risk and the stress that accompanies it, paying down your mortgage might give you better sleep at night. If you have any questions regarding the above discussed topic or any other tax matter, please feel free to give me a call at (562) 698-9891. Richard Scrivanich, Partner For Harvey & Parmelee LLP
