We Mean Business

The Whittier Uptown Association is revving up for the 11th Annual Uptown Whittier Hot Rod and Muscle Car Show on Saturday, August 20, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year’s event promises to be a great day full of great cars and activities for the whole family. There will be hundreds of classic cars lining Greenleaf Avenue (between Hadley and Penn) and Philadelphia Street (between Comstock and Painter). This year’s show is an effort to continue the long established reputation of being one of the larger and better shows in the Southern California area. This event attracts thousands of car enthusiasts and families to Uptown annually where they spend the day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. viewing hundreds of classic cars, hot rods, street rods, muscle cars and some very expensive, luxurious and exquisitely restored automobiles. There will be plenty of booths with various types of automobile-related products and promotional displays. There will also be a live raffle of automotive products and gear, and a 50/50 drawing with a chance to win big money! The 11th Annual Uptown Whittier Hot Rod and Muscle Car Show collectable t-shirt will also be available to purchase. The event is free and open to the public, and a portion of the proceeds from the event will go to benefit local community organizations. One of the beneficiaries of this year’s event will be Whittier First Day. Pat Bouchard and staff help homeless and at-risk individuals in the community transition toward self-sufficiency. Whittier First Day has helped the Whittier Uptown Association organize and manage the Uptown car show for years and their generous help and support will not go unnoticed. Kevin Stith and the crew at Stith Screenprinting have produced the Car Show t-shirt every year, and have agreed to produce the event t-shirt again this year. Triangle Distribution, the local Budweiser distributor, has been the Hot Rod and Muscle Car Show’s biggest sponsor, and they, too, are back to help the Uptown Association this year. They will be joined by event sponsors PIH (Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital) and Bright Health Physicians, Caremore, Toyota of Whittier, Hedman Hedders, Camino Real, The Auto Club, Friendly Hills Chevron, Community Honda, Rocky Cola Cafe, Steve’s BBQ, Havana House, Coldwell Banker Alliance, Friendly Hills Bank, the Radisson Hotel, Sage Restaurant & Lounge and White Emerson Mortuary. With the help of these partners, the Whittier Uptown Association anticipates another successful Uptown Car Show. Come and enjoy a fun-filled day admiring the cars while enjoying the many unique shops and 40-plus restaurants located in Uptown. There will also be plenty of live entertainment on two stages to keep families and friends dancing all day long! Registration for automobiles to be featured in the show is still being taken through the Whittier Uptown Association. The cost for preregistered cars is $30, which includes an event t-shirt. After August 10, and on the day of the show, the cost will be $35 and does not include a t-shirt, so please register early. Registration on the day of the event will begin at 7 a.m. For further information or more details, please contact the Whittier Uptown Association at (562) 696-2662 or visit their website at www.whittieruptown.org.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

MAYOR’S MESSAGE

As we prepare for the final days of summer, I hope we can all look back on these past few months and feel as though we have made the most of our time, money and resources. I am sure many of us are trying to take advantage of these last few warm days to enjoy some hiking with friends, quality family time at the beach or sneaking in that last vacation before it’s back to business in September. Throughout the summer and the upcoming months, we here at the Whittier Chamber will be busily preparing for the 33rd Annual Hathaway Golf Classic. For the past 33 years, the Hathaway Golf Classic has maintained its status as a standard-setting event which not only promises a day of fun on the green, but business networking Ben Greer, and marketing that only the Whittier Chamber can provide. The GM Properties unbeatable marketing opportunities that the Whittier Chamber is known for are ever-present in this popular golf tournament, seen in the exposure that tournament sponsors receive and the invaluable networking that takes place that day. While some may sense the current business environment is still a bit unsteady, the 33rd anniversary of the Hathaway Golf Classic is testament to the stability and dependability of a membership investment in the Whittier Chamber. Moreover, Whittier Chamber members understand how important the Chamber is to their business during times of economic uncertainty. While marketing funds may be low, this doesn’t mean that we as business owners cease to market our business. From my personal experience as a long-time Chamber member with GM Properties, I can testify that the Whittier Chamber’s ability to offer free or low-cost networking and marketing opportunities is unmatched. The Whittier Chamber is honored to have more than 600 devoted business owners that utilize their membership to their business advantage. Throughout these questionable economic times, I will be participating in the following Chamber initiatives and I encourage you to do the same: - I will continue to frequent Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce members and “Shop Whittier!” for my personal and business needs. - As Chamber President, I will be participating in the Hathaway Golf Classic as a Snack Sponsor with my business GM Properties. Being a golf sponsor not only shows my continued support of the Chamber, but offers my business additional marketing during the day of the event. - I will be networking on the green with fellow golfers and Chamber members during the After Hours Mixer sponsored by Orbit Event Rentals. A ticket to the mixer is $40 and includes dinner, another great way for someone who isn’t so golf-savvy to participate in this year’s Hathaway Golf Classic without ever having to swing a club! - I will purchase golf balls for the Hathaway Golf Ball Drop. Not only do I have the opportunity to win big bucks, but the proceeds are returned to the Whittier Chamber so it can continue to serve the Whittier business community. The 33rd Annual Hathaway Golf Classic is set for Monday, September 12th at Friendly Hills Country Club in Whittier and is sponsored by Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital (PIH) and Bright Health Physicians (BHP) and the Rose Hills Foundation. For additional details on how you can get involved, please refer to the front page of this Business Focus. See you on the green!

Over the past several months, the City has provided updates on the proposed elimination of redevelopment throughout the state. Here’s the latest: on June 30, 2011, Governor Brown signed the main budget bill containing the 2011-12 fiscal year State Budget. As part of the State’s plan to close funding gaps in the budget, the Governor also signed several budget-related bills, one which eliminates redevelopment agencies (AB X1 26), and another that allows cities to make payments to the State to reinstate their redevelopment agency (AB X1 27) under the Alternative Voluntary Redevelopment Program (AVRP). By adopting an ordinance and paying the annual Cathy Warner, remittance fee, the City will be authorized to continue to exist and Whittier City Mayor carry out the provisions of the California Redevelopment Law under the AVRP. The elimination of the Whittier Redevelopment Agency (WRA) would significantly stall or, in many cases, stop progress on its current projects, which include the redevelopment of large sites like the Fred C. Nelles site and the vacant auto dealerships, as well as WRA-owned properties like the former Alpha Beta and Ricker Motors sites. The City Council believes that it is in the best interest of the community to pay the State and continue the redevelopment efforts in Whittier. Consequently, last month, the Council passed an Ordinance to reinstate the Redevelopment Agency under the AVRP. This is great news for the community because redevelopment projects already in motion such as the Branch Library expansion and the Pickering and Philadelphia affordable housing project will be completed. The AVRP will also allow the City/Agency to enter into future development agreements on projects such as Nelles and continue to offer the Commercial Façade Loan Program to business and property owners, among other programs. We have all noticed the recent demolition of Harris Buick, Pontiac & GMC as well as Board Ford. While at first these vacant lots may appear to be eyesores, it is important to note that vacant land is more attractive to developers than single purpose buildings (such as the vacant auto dealership buildings). With some of the site preparation already completed, developers may move more quickly to acquire these properties which present opportunities for new development and may prove to be beneficial in an older, built out community such as ours. During this back to school shopping season, I urge you to keep your dollars local as you go about your shopping. Remember, where you shop does make a difference as 1% of the total sales price on taxable items generated in the City goes directly into the City of Whittier General Fund. For example, if you spend $500 on school clothes for your children, the City will receive $5 from that purchase. This money helps fund public safety, community services, and provides revenue for street maintenance and other important services. I encourage you to rediscover shopping in our city and SHOP WHITTIER for all your back to school needs! Last, stay cool this summer by enjoying the many recreational opportunities in the City. Take your family to one of the many city parks or walk along the Greenway Trail in the morning or evening. If you would rather stay indoors, the Whittier Public Library is always cool and has lots to offer; whether you are 10 or 65, the library has a book for you!

UPTOWN UPDATE Greetings from the Whittier Uptown Association! As I write this article, we are 30 days away from our 11th Annual Hot Rod and Muscle Car Show which will be held in Uptown Whittier on August 20, 2011. When I joined the Association as the Executive Director, I was asked by the Board of Directors to create events within the Uptown area that were not only good for our members, but also good for our greater community in general. As I looked over our schedule of planned events, it occurred to me that the Annual Car Show was always a big hit within both of those groups so we decided to double the fun with two events this year! The first Car Show in August will feature hot rods, muscle cars, Allan Nakken, a few dragsters and everyone’s favorite classic automobiles. In Executive Director addition to this popular community event, we have added a second Car Show slated for May 2012. This show will feature vintage automobiles from 1977 and older. Antiques, classics, low customs, exotics and foreign will be featured in this unique car show. Both of these shows will feature different types of show cars and we hope there is something for everyone. The commitment to our membership is that we will not be bringing in outside food vendors during these shows and events. The concept behind this decision is to move the show goers into the local restaurants and eateries, which in the past has resulted in a record number of guests each time. We will bring in a few unique concession stands that will feature specialty treats like kettle corn and shaved ice; these were deemed non competitive and something the car show attendees and their families would enjoy while viewing the show. During the next few weeks, the Whittier Uptown Association will also initiate a Business Watch similar to a Neighborhood Watch. Whittier Police Department Chief Jeff Piper will join me in this continued effort to further our safety initiatives in the Uptown area. We look forward to seeing you and your family at our upcoming Car Show and hope you are all enjoying these warm summer months!

These days it’s hard to turn on the TV, listen to the radio or flip through a newspaper with out seeing something about social media. Social media is not just for interns and college kids any more. Business owners are using these tools to help leverage their business and get in front of millions of users! Here are some tips to help you get started… Plan - Evaluate your brand and business objectives, your business assets, your consumer(s) and your overall brand positioning to help guide and structure each social media engagement so that is can be tied back to a business goal. Identify the right strategic opportunities Alex Manriquez, for best leveraging your assets and resources, so you can focus on My Social Calling building meaningful customer relationships, increase organization effectiveness and grow your social platform effectively. Build - Tap a team of designers and developers to build custom Facebook and Twitter pages, applications and promotions that seamlessly integrate with the look, tone and feel of your brand, while also inspiring meaningful social interaction. Promote - Building up a social media presence is great, but it’s only one half of the equation. Momentum is generated by dedicated headcount that maximizes and manages all of your brand’s activity, which includes both inbound and outbound messages. Deploy a wide range of engaging promotional campaigns including: exclusive branded content, sweepstakes, events, user-generated content contests, e-couponing campaigns and product giveaways. These promotional efforts should center on great content, but ultimately leverage integrated sharing and promotion technologies that give your message the best shot to grow organically. Measure - By listening in, you’re able to 1) mine insights for new opportunities; 2) identify key influencers; and 3) understand how your promotional campaigns are fairing. Identify the tone of what’s being talked about online (positive, negative, neutral) to uncover timely truths which will enable you to build better products, promotions and customer relationships. So what’s the bottom line? The conversations are happening about you and your brand with or without you. Will you be involved in the discussion, or will you let others dictate the conversation? Social media is calling… are you ready to answer? For more tips and helpful suggestions regarding social media platforms and how to better integrate these new online avenues into your business plan, call Social Media Consultant Alex Manriquez with My Social Calling at (909) 255-6668 and “Like” her fan page on Facebook at My Social Calling.

Tax tips Taxability of Disability Income As is often the case with tax questions, the answer to whether or not disability income is subject to income tax is: it depends. The key question is: Who paid for the benefit? If the income is paid directly to you by your employer, it is taxable to you just as your ordinary salary would be. (Taxable benefits are also subject to federal income tax withholding, although, depending on the employer's disability plan, in some cases they are not subject to the Social Security Richard Scrivanich, (FICA) tax.) Harvey & Parmelee Frequently, the payments are not made by the employer but by an LLP insurance company under a policy providing disability coverage or, under an arrangement having the effect of accident or health insurance. If this is the case, the tax treatment depends on who paid for the insurance coverage. If your employer paid for it, then the income is taxed to you just as if paid directly to you by the employer. On the other hand, if it's a policy you paid for, the payments you receive under it are not taxable. Even if your employer arranges for the coverage, i.e., it's a policy made available to you at work, the benefits are not taxed to you if you (and not your employer) pay the premiums. For these purposes, if the premiums are paid by the employer but the amount paid is included as part of your taxable income from work, the premiums will be treated as paid by you. In these cases, the tax treatment of the benefits received depends on the tax treatment of the premiums paid. Example (1): Max's salary is $1,000 a week ($52,000 for the year). Additionally, under a disability insurance arrangement made available to him by his employer, $10 a week ($520 for the year) is paid on his behalf by his employer to the ABC insurance company. Max includes $52,520 in income as his wages for the year: the $52,000 actually paid to him plus the $520 in disability insurance premiums. Under these facts, the insurance is treated as paid for by Max. If he becomes disabled and receives benefits under the policy, the benefits are not taxable income to him. Example (2): The facts are the same as in Example (1) except that Max includes only $52,000 in income as his wages for the year because the amount paid for the insurance coverage qualifies as excludable under the rules for employer-provided health and accident plans. Under these facts, the insurance is treated as paid for by the employer. If Max becomes disabled and receives benefits under the policy, the benefits are taxable income to him. Special rules: In the case of a permanent loss (or loss of the use) of a member or function of the body, or a permanent disfigurement, employer disability payments are not taxed, as long as they are not computed based on amount of time lost from work. Social Security disability benefits: Please note that this discussion doesn't cover the tax treatment of Social Security disability benefits. These benefits may be taxed to you under the rules that govern Social Security benefits. How much coverage do you need? In deciding how much disability coverage you need to protect yourself and your family, you should take the tax treatment into consideration. If

7 Reasons Why Every Business & Non-Profit Should Be a Member of the Chamber of Commerce In a world loaded with marketing options and information overload, I’m often asked by new and existing business owners for a simple, inexpensive way to increase their local visibility and marketing efforts to produce more opportunities and sales. Without a doubt, I always ask a stunningly simple question: are you a member of your local chamber of commerce? I get one of three answers: 1. Yes. 2. No, but tell me more. 3. We used to be a member. Now I know every person has opinions, but I’d like you to take a moment to read this brief article to discover seven reasons why I strongly feel that every business and non-profit organization should be a member of their local chamber, regardless of the size of their organization, marketing budget, years in business, or even if they’ve heard of or possibly had a negative chamber experience in the past. In light of the current challenges in the economy, this article is even more relevant than when I first wrote it two years ago. 1. Visibility. Yes, you’ve heard it said time and time again, that out of sight means out of mind. This is not a smart strategy for any business, especially when times are good, and a market can change quickly. As Jim Collins says, “Good is the enemy of great.” This is a great statement, but I’d like to add to it as it relates to marketing. While good is the enemy of great, complacency and short term thinking is the enemy of sustained marketing breakthroughs. Let’s look at a real world example of chamber complacency in action. Having worked with hundreds of chambers, I’m simply baffled that within many communities how few real estate agents and automotive sales reps are either nonexistent or barely active within their local chamber. In these two highly competitive and crowded markets, you’d think these folks would do anything to stand out from the competition and fully leverage the chamber to get an edge. Nope, it’s as if they have no idea the local chamber exists and how it can benefit their business. 2. Access. Unless you’re crazy or like consistent rejection, no one enjoys making cold calls all day long. It’s a painful, tedious process that often wastes far too much time and mentally drains even the most upbeat and friendly person after a while. When you join a chamber and get active, you’ll discover that meeting prospects who may have shown interest or who can refer you to key contacts you’re trying to reach, is a huge benefit of membership. From being on committees, serving as an Ambassador or attending specific events where prospects are likely to be, you’ll find yourself in situations where you can identify and meet decision makers face-to-face versus making cold calls. 3. Ongoing training and education. Unless you have the luxury of a training budget or can afford to bring in local, regional or nationally known experts on different topics, I firmly believe that there’s no other organization in America that delivers timely programs at such an affordable price as the local or regional chamber of commerce. By spreading costs among fellow members through registration fees and sponsorships, members can stay updated, informed and educated at a bargain price. 4. Networking. From seminars, leads groups and luncheons to business expos and various business and community committees, there’s absolutely no excuse for not being able

to meet new contacts, referrals and people who can help you with ideas and additional ways to grow your business. The old adage “out of sight, out of mind” is so true when it relates to networking. The chamber offers you several different venues to meet new people. Throughout my entire career I’ve utilized the power of networking in my nearby chambers, ranging from serving as co-chair of the Ambassador league to sponsoring and speaking at various events. The positive outcomes from these interactions and the people I have met have been great. In addition, doing business with fellow chamber members who offer wonderful products, services and ideas has also been a big plus. 5. Low cost advertising opportunities. As far as visibility at the local level is concerned, a chamber offers a wide range of affordable advertising options and sponsorship packages for just about every business or non-profit, regardless of how big or small their budget may be. Buying and selling traditional media is not cheap. For the price of a few ads within a major media outlet, you can often sponsor an entire program within the chamber, give a short commercial about your company, meet new prospects and follow up with the list of attendees who may have a need for what you are offering. A common area to get low cost advertising is submitting updates, press releases or news briefs for possible inclusion in the chamber’s monthly newspaper or e-newsletter. Amazingly, a lot of members do not take advantage of this wonderful free marketing opportunity provided with their membership. The chamber is always on the lookout for member-related news. I make it a point to submit news or an announcement regarding my business every few months so that I know it will be read by key people in the business community. 6. Advocacy. A foolish belief among large companies, especially national retail outlets, is that they’re too big or not local enough to care about getting involved with or joining their local chamber of commerce. A few things they should think about: Are their employees and customers local? Are taxes and school systems important to finding and retaining a high quality work force? These are key areas that the chamber researches, lobbies and routinely discusses with local and regional government units, politicians and the media to keep people informed about central issues of importance pertaining to their membership and the community. What happens to your local employees and customers does have an impact on your business even if you are a national chain. 7. Money saving discounts. If you fully leverage the cost saving discounts ranging from health insurance, office supplies, to discounted phone service or other items your business currently uses, it’s not uncommon for a small business to easily find enough savings in the first 30 to 60 days upon joining with endorsed providers or member-to-member discounts to recoup most, if not all, of their membership dues. Being a small business owner myself, I can attest to the fact that being a member of the chamber and shopping around for discounts and services available makes joining achievable for any company regardless of how limited their marketing budget may be. Well, there you have it! Seven great reasons to join, get more involved with and fully leverage the benefits that your local or regional chamber of commerce can provide your business or organization. Beverly Hospital Names Three New Board Members

Whittier Dentist Brings Technology to Oralingua School for Hearing Impaired

Beverly Hospital is pleased to announce the appointment of Don Nakanishi, Ph.D. of Los Angeles, Alma Perez of Temple City and David Chambers of Sierra Madre to its Board of Directors. Don Nakanishi, Ph.D. worked as a professor for the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) for 35 years before retiring in 2009. He served the last 20 years as director of the UCLA Asian American Studies Center, the nation’s largest and most renowned research, teaching, publications and educational institute on Asian Pacific Americans. Nakanishi specializes in the political and educational experiences of Asian Americans and other immigrant and minority groups in the U.S. and worldwide. “I would like to devote more of my time, energy and skills to enhance the quality of life of the residents of Greater Montebello-East Los Angeles where I grew up,” said Nakanishi. He went on to say that being a board member at Beverly Hospital provides an opportunity to become meaningfully involved in the community and to make contributions that will ensure the future viability and growth of the hospital for generations to come. Alma Perez is a dynamic professional who has tremendous energy, insight and over 20 years of human resources experience. She fully embraces the concept of building a “People First” culture as adapted by her employer, Rice Garden, Inc., which involves core human resource responsibilities that includes leadership, skills and training. Perez earned a bachelors degree from the University of Redlands. She currently serves on the board of several professional organizations including the Latin Business Association, California Hispanic Corporate Council and is an advisor to the Mexican-American Opportunity Foundation. David Chambers is the principal of Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary High in Montebello for the past four years and has been an educator for over 30 years. Under his leadership, the high school has experienced increased enrollment, higher learning and student development with the focus being school accreditation and its processes. “I believe to be a successful leader one must fully engage the art and science of leadership by creating a vision for his or her organization that is symbolic of its mission and nurtures a shared view of its future,” said Chambers. He went on to say a leader must develop a collaborative team of creative, passionate administrators, faculty and staff who are collectively dedicated to the personal growth of all involved. The board of directors includes physicians, business and community leaders who meet monthly to ensure the furtherance of the mission and vision of the hospital. The addition of these Board members is sure to be a tremendous asset to Beverly Hospital. Their outstanding leadership experiences and personal ties to the community provide an even greater body to the existing board.

Local Whittier dentist, Dr. John Sudick, is helping to bring new computer technology into the classroom for 75 deaf children at Oralingua School. Last December when his patient, Krista Santanna, a teacher of hearing impaired children at Oralingua School, told him about the plight of broken computers in their classrooms, Dr. Sudick took up the task of making the greater Whittier community aware of this worthwhile project. He committed $100 for every $600 raised for the 12 computers that were needed. His own patients, private donors in Whittier, local businesses with the Whittier Chamber of Commerce and members of the Whittier Host Lions donated nearly $7,200.00 for the purchase of new computers this summer. In addition to the local fundraiser, Edison International donated 10 computers for a computer lab so students can have hands on computer experience. “Our fund drive got a real boost when The Whittier Daily News ran a photo and news story about our effort last February,” said Dr. John Sudick, a Whittier family dentist celebrating 25 years in practice in Uptown Whittier. To make good on his offer, Dr. Sudick joined students at Oralingua School in Uptown Whittier to present a check for $1,200.00 to teacher Krista Santanna and development coordinator Tracie Cargill at their first annual carnival on Friday June 17, 2011. The event marked the end of their normal school year where they celebrated their accomplishments during the year and enjoyed face painting, races, Afton the Clown, food and fun. Oralingua is a unique school where hearing-impaired students learn to “hear” with a cochlear implant and practice techniques for guiding them in their education so that by the time they are in elementary school, the children can mainstream and integrate into the public or regular schools and be successful in their academic careers. To learn more about Oralingua School for the hearing impaired, or to make a donation for the second phase of their technology fundraiser which will go toward a projection unit for each classroom, please visit www. WHAT’s COOL IN YOUR SCHOOL Whittier Union High School District to Rehire 45 Teachers and Counselors

Afterschool Program Credited With Drop in High School Truancy Rates

Whittier Union High School District officials recently announced that they will rehire 45 teachers and counselors who had been laid off due to budget cuts. The action comes as the result of a District-wide effort to find other ways to cut $4.5 million from the budget for the 2011-12 school year. “This is a huge accomplishment for us and it’s all thanks to the effective leadership of our dedicated Board of Trustees, employee associations, and 50-member Budget Review Committee who worked tirelessly and California High School math teacher Mike collaboratively on a plan that puts our students Gomez assists a student during a summer first,” said Sandra Thorstenson, Superintendent school algebra class. Gomez is one of 45 teachers and counselors whom the Whittier of the Whittier Union High School District. Union High School District was able to “We are ecstatic to be able to bring 39 teachers rehire by finding other ways to cut $4.5 and six counselors back to our schools. The million from its budget for 2011-12 benefit to our students as the result of these diligent efforts cannot be overstated.” Whittier Union had to cut $4.5 million from its 2011-12 budget due to four years of significant state funding reductions and increases in costs because of higher consumer prices. Since 2007-2008, Whittier Union’s state revenues have been cut by $17 million. As a result, a deficit had to be addressed. In May, the District laid off 50 teachers and counselors with the hope of finding other ways to cut costs and bring as many of the employees back as possible. In order to reach $4.5 million in budget reductions and rehire teachers and counselors, the Board of Trustees, Budget Review Committee and employee associations agreed on a plan to make more cuts to the operations budget, implement an early retirement incentive and approve a renegotiated salary schedule which maintains employee salaries at their current level. “The cost-saving change to the salary schedule was achieved by the employee associations who put Whittier Union’s students’ and colleagues’ interests above their own and selflessly voted to freeze their salaries in order to help bring as many of our teachers back to our classrooms as possible,” Thorstenson said. “This is on top of a 3% acrossthe-board salary cut made in 2009.” “I want to emphasize that this would not have been possible without the culture of mutual respect, integrity and trust that we have built at Whittier Union,” Thorstenson said.

El Rancho High School officials are crediting LEARN (Learning, Enrichment & Academic Resources Network) and its PREP program for playing a major role in the decline of student truancy rates. LEARN provides quality afterschool services that focus on homework assistance, academic and extra-curricular enrichment and recreation for grades K through 12 within the communities of Whittier, Pico Rivera and El Monte. “In the 2006-2007 academic year, El Rancho High School had a total student enrollment rate of 3,399 and the number of students with unexcused absence or were tardy three or more days was 2,083, equating a truancy rate of 61.28%,” said Michael Cervantes, PREP program area supervisor. “Due to PREP funding the Truancy Program, the current truancy rate is 26.2% and it may be lower as the numbers for this academic year are not definite yet.” “Our resources and collaborative efforts have worked to address a persistent problem in truancy by developing strong personal connections to the students and families that we serve and by providing a solid curriculum that supports students in their efforts to change their perspective on school and to see the effects that truancy plays in their educational career,” said Robert Arellanes, LEARN CEO. El Rancho High School teachers Raul Elias and Parvin Qureshi were responsible for facilitating the afterschool program and enhancing students’ study strategy skills. The students mandated to attend the program expressed gratitude stating they “never knew the impact missing school had until now.” LEARN was started seven years ago to encourage a culture of learning by securing and providing resources to students and families in areas of need, and in an effort to increase the college going rate within its service area. “The PREP program, funded by 21st CCLC ASSETs, has been embraced by staff and collaborative partners at El Rancho High School,” said Cervantes. “It has been adopted as an integral part of the learning culture on campus and is considered to be a key component to student achievement and success.” “We are very fortunate to have the LEARN organization here at El Rancho High School providing activities for students during their out-of-school time through the PREP program,” said Norbert Genis, former El Rancho Unified School District superintendent. “The benefits of quality afterschool programs are clear. They support working families by ensuring that children are safe and productive when the school day ends,” said Arellanes. “Quality afterschool programs make our Photo of Sam Genis, Principal of communities stronger by involving students, parents, El Rancho High School (left) and

WHITTIER BEAUTIFUL Medical Group Receives Beautification Award After Opening Corporate Office in Uptown Whittier Bright Health Physicians of PIH is the new kid on the block in Uptown Whittier! The Whittier Chamber of Commerce recently recognized the non-profit medical group by presenting them with the Whittier Beautiful Award after opening their new corporate office at the corner of Greenleaf Avenue and Bailey Street. Bright Health Physicians of PIH Corporate Office is the first major project completed under Whittier’s 2008 Uptown Specific Plan which calls for new development in the historic district, and with it, new revenue for existing businesses and revitalization for the area. The renovated building was a Myers Department Store in the 1950s and later a Boston Clothiers and Thrifty Jr. drug store. A variety of energy-efficient features were planned during the renovation. An insulated single-ply white roof reflects the sun to keep the building an even temperature. Filtered water systems in staff lounges are intended to reduce bottled water use. Refurbished, ergonomic furniture was used in various offices and cubicles. Southern California Edison provided rebates for the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and lighting systems used throughout the building. With 40,000 square feet available in the renovated building, Bright Health Physicians has moved 155 administrative employees in 17 departments from 3 locations in Whittier, La Habra and La Mirada to Uptown Whittier. Eventually, 215 employees will be based at the Greenleaf address (no medical services are provided there). Bright Health Physicians of PIH is an organization comprised of a nonprofit medical foundation and a large independent physician association (IPA), related to Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital (PIH). Bright Health Physicians offers a number of special benefit services to the community, including community education, urgent care and after-hours clinics, community health screenings, mobile screening clinics and more. OFFICE LIFE 10 Must-Haves for Better Word-of-Mouth Marketing

These tactics can help enhance your credibility when attending networking events Word-of-mouth campaigns can be a valuable tool in your business’s overall marketing strategy. They often generate quality referrals because customers rely on recommendations from trusted sources more than they do from advertisements. Additionally, the costs associated with running a successful word-of-mouth campaign are usually a fraction of what a traditional advertising campaign can run. But what you save in dollars spent you will need to replace with time and effort. On top of delivering the highest quality product or service possible, you'll need to plan and execute a schedule of networking events that will put you in front of people and begin to build your credibility. Below, I've assembled a list of 10 credibility-enhancing materials that you should have at your disposal in order to make the most of every networking opportunity and ultimately build a successful word-of-mouth campaign. Not every item should be used at the first point of contact with a potential client or someone who can refer clients to you. For the Early Networking Stages: 1. A one-page flyer. Have a brief overview of your business ready to pass along at all times in case you meet someone while networking who wants to quickly pass along your information to a prospective client he or she knows. You should have a hard copy to fax and an electronic copy to email. 2. Question-and-answer sheets. One of the quickest ways to learn about a person's business as a networker, and for him or her to learn about yours, is to make the initial meeting as organized as possible. A sheet with questions that you can each ask each other can ensure you don't forget to find out the information that could lead to a quick referral. 3. Testimonial letters from satisfied clients. This can be one of the most effective ways to showcase the quality of the products or services you provide. You can keep hard copies in a binder or post them to your website. If you have a LinkedIn profile, ask the clients in your network to "recommend" you. 4. Photos of yourself, your office facilities, products and awards. Having a professional photo of yourself is important for promotional opportunities and for your social media profiles. Photos of your office or business operation and products help to legitimize your business and gain credibility. Also consider having photos of awards and certificates you and your staff have earned. 5. Items that explain your business. These can include: your annual report, mission statement or a written history of your company. You can also use information published articles, results from surveys created and compiled by you or by others in your industry, presentation notes or slides, your advertisements or multimedia presentations.

For the Later Networking Stages: 6. New-product or service announcements. As you network, make sure the people who might potentially hire you or refer others to you are immediately informed when you offer new products or services or if you are expanding operations. The best way to do this is through press releases and announcements. In addition to submitting these to news outlets, you can hand them out at meetings or post them online. Also consider having brochures, data sheets and catalogs for your current products and services. 7. A list of your memberships and affiliations. This can be helpful when meeting someone for the first time, to see if you have mutual acquaintances or business associates. It may also lead to an introduction to someone in one of your organizations to whom you have been hoping to be introduced. 8. Articles you have published or in which you're mentioned. Writing articles, or being mentioned in them, is a great way to become known as an expert in your field. People often prefer doing business with experts. 9. Client or customer proposals, bid sheets, or marketing letters. Keeping this information top-of-mind will come in handy if you are at a networking event and have the opportunity to talk to a prospective client in depth. The prospect may have a specific need that is similar in scope to jobs you have already bid on. Having the ability to quickly refer to previously-completed proposals may give you an edge with the prospect. 10. News reports on trends affecting your target market. Ivan Misner is founder and Chairman Keeping up with issues and news items that of BNI, a professional business networking are important to people can enable you to organization headquartered in Upland, have targeted conversations with prospects. Calif. He is also a New York Times Then, ideally, you'll be able to discuss your bestselling author related products and services and turn those prospects into clients.

Before You Pop That Pill... The ProAdjuster is the Answer.

There seems to be a pill for everything these days. We live in a convenient magic pill society where everything is solved by a tiny pill; it seems almost too good to be true. Well, sadly, it is, and many people are facing severe repercussions because of these “magic pills”, especially with regard to pain medications, or painkillers as we often refer to them. Lasting effects can be, but are not limited to, dependency, endless increases in dosages due to increased tolerance, liver damage, ulcers, decreased brain function, and this just names a few.

Let’s first discuss pain. The direct and indirect cost to society of lower back pain has been estimated to be approximately $50 billion annually. In fact, lower back pain is the most common cause of disability in people under age 45, and of the $27 billion spent on all musculoskeletal trauma, $16 billion is spent in the management of low back pain, with more than half of that $16 billion being spent on surgical treatment

Spend Locally and Keep Sales Tax Dollars in Your Community

Coach Koon is the founder and President of Black Mat MMA, where he teaches Mixed Martial Arts to children, young adults, "at risk" and underprivileged kids from the community. Coach Koon remembers being the smallest among 2 brothers growing up, which he believes resulted in low self-esteem throughout his school years. Tired of being bullied, he was convinced into joining his high school wrestling team. He lost every battle in his first year, but that did not stop him from attending every practice. He later went on to make the Varsity team and had finally found a sport that he felt was fair by competing against opponents in his same weight class. He was named League Champ and went to the CIF Championships. Wrestling was able give him self-esteem and selfconfidence, which he still has today, and he gives that back to his students at Black Mat MMA. After turning 21 and being introduced to the party scene among his peers, Coach Koon began to develop a serious problem with alcoholism. He almost lost everything due to his problem with alcohol and the grief it brought to his life, but thanks to his wife’s encouragement and prayers, he finally asked for help. He has now been sober for over 15 years and is thankful for a program of recovery and grateful for the gift of sobriety he has been given. With a newfound outlook on life, he met a friend in his recovery group who offered to train him in kickboxing and soon discovered an interest in learning other fighting styles. He joined the local American Kenpo Karate studio where he practiced Kung Fu, Kali, boxing and Submission Wrestling. His background in wrestling gave him the foundation he needed to learn each individual technique. Seven years ago, Coach Koon was approached by a neighborhood kid who asked him for help with his training. They began lifting weights in his garage on a regular basis and he began teaching him how to wrestle and kickbox. By this time his son Philip Jr. had been hired as the Assistant Coach of the nearby high school wrestling team and before he knew it, all the neighborhood wrestlers began training in his garage! Coach Koon found that the majority of the kids had some kind of problem in their lives; no father, no mother, drugs, gangs, tagging, they were failing school and more. Coach Koon had become more than just their coach and was now a mentor to these students, and he continues to make a difference in their lives today through Black Mat MMA. He now has, along with his Assistant Coach Rico, anywhere from 25 to 50 kids at any given time at his gym. Black Mat MMA also focuses on academic tutoring for kids that need help or are doing poorly in school. His goal is to see every child that comes through his doors graduate from high school. He also offers a drug and alcohol prevention program, along with a variety of other programs that focus on positive, healthy lifestyles. Each child has their own success story. For more information on getting involved with Black Mat MMA, call (323) 864-4385.

ONE STOP SHOPPING!

Whittier Business Focus

By Barbara Wold, Barbara Wold International

Did you know that if you spend $100 at locally-owned stores, $62 stays right in your community? If you spend that same $100 in a national chain, your community still benefits, however it only receives $42. For online sales, $0 is returned to your community! The need to keep sales tax dollars in your community is so important. Those dollars pay for police protection, libraries, schools, playgrounds and more. They allow City Hall to provide programs and services that benefit the entire community. The Importance of Buying Local -1. Shopping local creates jobs. Shops in your town create local employment and self-employment. These people in turn spend in the local economy. 2. Local independent shops invest more in your communities. Local businesses are proportionally more generous in their support of local charities, schools, and community events. So supporting local shops means a financial contribution to your community. 3. Local shops sell great products at affordable prices. Some people get out of the habit of shopping locally and are then surprised by the range of products available. 4. Shopping locally saves you time and money. You travel less, saving on time and fuel. 5. Shopping locally retains your communities. People don’t like losing shops and services in small towns but don’t equate this with how they spend their money. 6. Shopping locally retains your distinctiveness. Independent shops create distinctive shopping experiences and stock different products. Local businesses respond more quickly to the needs of local customers, stocking products to meet changing population needs. 7. Shopping locally saves the environment. Local shops often stock a high percentage of locally sourced goods that do not require long-distance transportation, helping to reduce our global footprint. 8. Local shops are for everyone. Most people can get to their local shops easily. This is especially important for the elderly, young people and others who rely on public transportation. 9. Local shops value you more. Evidence from numerous surveys show people receive better customer care and service locally. These businesses survive by their reputation and repeat business, which means you get a higher standard of service. Continued on page 18

Child Care Provider Receives National Accreditation

Margo Haber of Margo’s Family Child Care in Whittier has recently been awarded a National Accreditation from the National Association for Family Child Care (NAFCC). Haber was excited about the challenge of meeting the qualifications for an accreditation saying, “I wanted to provide top quality care to all the children enrolled in my program.” Haber has been providing care in her home for 29 years and currently serves children from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The program offers a preschool curriculum as well as a summer program for all ages and participates in the USDA Child & Adult Food Program. NAFCC offers accreditation to providers across the country, aiding them in raising their standards of quality care and gaining them the respect and recognition they deserve for their commitment to quality and the children they serve. The city of Whittier benefits from the award as it shows that quality care is available to parents in the community. Children benefit from the accreditation as it indicates that they will be cared for in a safe, nurturing environment and that their educational needs will be met. Haber said, “NAFCC Accreditation serves to further ensure quality care throughout my program and has also served in making the parents and families more aware of my program and how we operate as a team for the benefit of all the children.” In addition to NAFCC, Haber is a member of Court Appointed Special Advocates and the Whittier Chamber of Commerce. She is a certified preschool teacher and director. For more information about NAFCC, receiving an accreditation or finding an accredited provider, please visit www.nafcc.org. 10. Shopping local saves services. Private and public sector services cluster around shops. As shops disappear so do hairdressers, banks, restaurants and other businesses. Consumers can pledge to Think, Shop, Buy, Local and commit to patronizing businesses near where they live and work. Local stores employ your neighbors, pay taxes that support your schools and improve your roads, and contribute to local non-profit groups. Together we can strengthen relationships that improve our quality of life. So next time before you make a purchase, Think, Shop, Buy, Local. ORGANIZATIONS WELCOME HOME VIETNAM VETERNAS Jose Ramos, Chairman and Founder PO Box 556 Whittier, CA 90608 (562) 696-3965 WHVVD@aol.com www.whvvd.org Each year on the last Sunday of March, there will be a tremendous gathering in every state in America. The time has come to welcome home our Vietnam veterans! With the leadership of Representative Linda T. Sanchez, House Resolution 234 was unanimously passed, by ALL members of the US Congress, proclaiming March 30 as Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day [WHVVD]. Vietnam veterans and their families have waited long and patiently for this day. We owe this recognition, not only to the Vietnam Veterans who are with us today, we also owe it to the warriors on The Vietnam Wall so that they may rest, knowing their sisters and brothers received the honor and respect they earned and deserve. Last but not least, we owe it to America. America wants to welcome home it’s daughters and sons who served during the very difficult and troubling Vietnam War. In your state, in your town, in your community, come together on the last Sunday of every March.
