OCTOBER 2011
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
MAYOR’S MESSAGE
As I turn the page on my calendar, it is hard to believe that we are already into the month of October! I don’t know where the time goes. What I do know is that the Whittier Chamber had a very successful 33rd Annual Hathaway Golf Classic on September 12. It was a great day for golf and it’s always a great time for networking at Friendly Hills Country Club. I want to thank everyone who participated in the event in one way or another, whether it was as a Hole Host out on the course, donating raffle items, volunteering at registration or by getting together a foursome. Without the help and support from our members over the past 33 years, the tournament would not be what it is today. The Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce continues to take the Ben Greer, proceeds from its successful events, like the Hathaway Golf Classic, GM Properties and apply them toward providing added value to its members. A prime example of these efforts is the B.O.S.S. Program (Business Owners’ Seminar Series). The B.O.S.S. Program, which began in 2009 as part of the City of Whittier’s Local Economic Stimulus and Business Assistance Plan, offers free business seminars to our Chamber members each month which cover a wide variety of important topics including healthcare reform, marketing, effective selling and more. The Chamber and the City have worked hard to provide these opportunities to strengthen your business. Be sure to take advantage of these valuable learning opportunities. This month’s training seminar is all about Integrating Social Media into Your Holiday Marketing Strategy. The holiday season is just around the corner; come and learn more about how to utilize social media platforms to your advantage and increase your sales during the holiday months. I know I’ll be there! In addition to the Chamber’s regular Wake Up Whittier and Tasty Tuesday networking events, the month of October is full of great opportunities to mix ‘n mingle with fellow business owners and members. The Fall Business Showcase, co-sponsored by the City of Whittier, Whittwood Town Center and Whittier Hospital, will take place on Thursday, October 6 in the Whittwood Town Center parking lot from 4 to 7 p.m. Tables are only $99 for this outdoor expo, which is free to attend and open to the public. Call the Chamber office to reserve a space at (562) 698-9554 as this should be another great tradeshow hosted by the Chamber. The CAPC, Inc. Celebrity Waiter Dinner & Dance is the following day (Friday, October 7) at the Norwalk Doubletree Hotel. The Whittier Chamber will host a table at the annual fundraising event and anyone who would like to can purchase a ticket and join the fun. Lastly, the Chamber’s annual Halloween Mixer will be on Thursday, October 7 at the Historic Mission Court Building in Uptown (13033 Penn St.). The mixer is co-hosted by The Whole Child, as well as Mission Court tenants Renew Massage & Skin Care, Mango Salon and Doppio Bacio, and will feature Renew’s annual Haunted Spa, appetizers and beverages from Doppio Bacio and a fun, spooky atmosphere for business networking. Make sure you dress to impress for the costume contest. I’d like to close with a few final thoughts. This is not the time to cut advertising. It is well documented that businesses that increase advertising during a recession, when competitors are cutting back, can improve market share and return on investment at lower cost than during good economic times. The Chamber is here for our members as a resource to offer superior networking events, refer your services and help market your business. I encourage you to contact the Chamber staff to tailor a marketing plan specific to your needs and stay connected in the coming months.
The City is pleased to report on several pertinent items this month. The City’s economic development efforts are once again being recognized by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC). This is the third year in a row that Whittier is named as a finalist for the Most Business Friendly City Award in the category of cities with a population over 60,000. The final winner will be announced on November 3 at the LAEDC’s Annual Eddy Awards dinner. The City has completed several significant projects over the past few years and we appreciate the recognition for our commitment to the business community. The Council acknowledges the Whittier Cathy Warner, Area Chamber of Commerce and the Uptown Association who serve Whittier City Mayor as our partners in creating an environment for economic growth for the benefit of the entire community. With the holiday shopping season just around the corner, business owners are encouraged to take advantage of the marketing opportunities provided by the Chamber. The Fall Business Showcase scheduled for October 6 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Whittwood Town Center is the perfect opportunity to kick off your holiday marketing campaign and showcase your products to the community. The Expo will be held in the parking lot on the east side of the Center off of Santa Gertrudes by Vons supermarket. Visit the Whittier Chamber website at www.whittierchamber.com for more information or to purchase your table. Other events this month include the Uptown Association’s Dia de los Muertos Arts and Music Festival on Sunday, October 16 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the Fall Antique Faire scheduled for Saturday, October 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition, the Whittier Community Foundation will hold a “Spooktacular 5K Run and Walk” on Saturday, October 29. The 5K, which runs through Uptown, will feature cash prizes, awards, a USA Track and Field certified course, t-shirts, refreshments and goodie bags for participants. Additionally, there will be a “Children’s Creepy Crawly Half-Mile Dash” for children 12 and under. All registered runners/walkers will receive a free pancake breakfast at Joe Miller Field after the race. Early registration is only $27 for adults and $13 for children before October 25. For more information, please call (562) 567-9460. Last month, Assemblyman Charles Calderon and Senator Ron Calderon led an effort to allow the Whittier Redevelopment Agency to assist Brookfield Homes on the Nelles site through special legislation. The bill would have allowed the Nelles site to be exempt from new State laws that aim to eliminate or downsize redevelopment in California. Redevelopment allows the increase in property tax revenue from the purchase price to go to the Whittier Redevelopment Agency. Those funds would then be used by the Agency to assist the developer with improvements on or around the site such as public streets and other infrastructure. While the State Senate approved the legislation, it fell short on a few votes in the Assembly. The City applauds the efforts of Assemblyman Charles Calderon and Senator Ron Calderon. The City continues to monitor the California Supreme Court lawsuit filed by the California Redevelopment Association and League of California Cities to determine how the Court’s decision will affect implementation ABX1 26 and 27, the new redevelopment laws passed in June.
Happy Halloween!

The City continues to move forward through the lengthy process responding to the applicant (Matrix) for Mineral Extraction in the Whittier Hills. The environmental consultants are compiling comments to be included in the final environmental impact report (EIR) which will be presented to the Planning Commission in the near future. Please check the website at www.cityofwhittier.org or call the Community Development Department at (562) 567-9320 for updates on time and location of meeting. The City recently received an update from the developer of the former Stats site, who shared that they anticipate breaking ground as early as January 2012. The Whittier business community continues to push forward regardless of lingering economic uncertainty. The two new dessert restaurants in Uptown indicate that this is still a viable place for entrepreneurs to open new businesses. Sugar Expressions, which specializes in cupcakes and sugar cookies, is located at 6744 Greenleaf Avenue in the heart of Uptown. Sweet Dreams Dessert Lounge, located at 12824 Hadley Street, Ste. 106, showcases beautiful desserts and offers breakfast and lunch menus. The City Council is grateful to all business owners who choose to invest in our City.

UPTOWN UPDATE I would like to begin by thanking the community and the Whittier Chamber of Commerce for making our 11th Annual Hot Rod and Muscle Car Show such a big success. We had a wide variety of specialty cars which were displayed throughout the show and attendance was once again up in the thousands. Our next Car Show will feature a different selection of automobiles including vintage styles and modified cars to classic models and low customs. Mark your calendar for the event, which is slated for May 19, 2012. October is a busy month around here! The Whittier Uptown Association is proud to host two events this month. The Dia de los Muertos celebration will take place on October 16 and our Allan Nakken, much anticipated Fall Antique Faire is coming up on October 22. Executive Director Both of these events have a proven track record of success while bringing extra traffic to our local business owners and shops, and they have become great annual events for the Uptown area. Dia de los Muertos will take place on Greenleaf Avenue between Philadelphia and Hadley and will not only feature unique booths with arts, crafts and other items, but will also showcase approximately 40 vintage automobiles for the crowd to explore. Our 16th Annual Fall Antique Street Fair will feature over 75 specialty booths displaying collectable furniture, jewelry, home decor and plenty of other antique pieces of interest. We are also in the process of setting the stage for our 58th Annual Christmas Parade which will take place on December 10, 2011. It is my honor and privilege to announce to you that our Grand Marshall for this Parade will be President of Whittier College, Sharon Herzberger. Sharon stands out naturally as a community leader and has brought so much to the City of Whittier and the Uptown area. This year’s parade will once again feature 12 divisions which include high school bands, floats and various VIP dignitaries. If anyone would like to participate in the Parade, volunteer or provide a sponsorship, please contact the Whittier Uptown Association at (562) 696-2662. We are looking forward to all of the great events taking place this fall and hope you and your family can join us for the fun. TAX TIPS Deduct, Don’t Depreciate The Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010 focused mainly on personal income and estate tax. Nevertheless, some additional provisions may be helpful to businesses. In particular, the new law enhances the Section 168(k) bonus depreciation provisions by temporarily allowing 100% first year Richard Scrivanich, Harvey & Parmelee bonus depreciation of new business equipment that qualifies for bonus depreciation. That is, a company that purchases qualifying LLP depreciable assets may deduct the entire cost of the assets right away. First-year deductions will immediately boost a company’s cash flow, compared with taking depreciation deductions over several years. No limits exist on the amount of qualifying equipment purchased that is eligible for the 100% deduction. This 100% deduction provision is effective for qualifying equipment placed in service from September 9, 2010, through the end of 2011. As a result, any company or self-employed individual who has bought or might buy business equipment has several sets of rules to consider. One law passed in 2010 set permitted first-year Section 179 deductions (expensing) at $500,000 worth of equipment. The phaseout threshold was set at $2 million, meaning that companies buying more than $2 million of equipment in 2010 lost some expensing opportunities. Thus, you might be able to use Section 179 expensing for up to $500,000, for equipment placed in service by September 8, and Section 168(k) 100% bonus depreciation for equipment placed in service after that date last year. For 2011, equipment purchasers can use either expensing ($500,000 limit, $2 million phaseout threshold), 100% bonus depreciation, or some combination of the two. The new law also calls for 50% bonus depreciation in 2012, along with a $125,000 limit for expensing and a $500,000 phaseout threshold. The bottom line? The interaction of these two code sections (Section 179 expensing and Section 168(k) bonus depreciation provides opportunities as well as complications. If you have any questions regarding the above discussed topic or any other tax matter, please feel free to give me a call at (562) 698-9891.

Whittier Connections Fights Homelessness Build Community, Canvas the Streets, Transform Lives Whittier Connections is a neighborhood campaign to house the most at-risk individuals on the streets. Overview Whittier embraces a variety of ethnic and socio-economic community members, but none of them should be homeless. In early November of 2011, the Whittier community will join forces under the leadership of nonprofit organization Whittier First Day Coalition, PATH (People Assisting the Homeless) and 100,000 Homes to create a by-name and photo-detailed registry of the neighborhood’s homeless residents to find the most at-risk individuals and house them. This campaign is a results-driven initiative that will transform individual lives and the community at-large. They need your help! How Does It Work? The first step is to garner community support, ranging from political leaders, local residents, faith groups and businesses. Then, they will build a team of dedicated and inspired community leader volunteers. Volunteers will be trained to gather data using a questionnaire that collects information from homeless individuals to assess their health and housing needs and prioritize housing for them. PATH is partnering with the 100,000 Homes Campaign, the organization known for decreasing homelessness in New York’s Times Square by 87 percent. The Results You’ll see a quantifiable decrease in neighborhood homelessness as people literally get off of the streets and into housing. This means a better life for the most at-risk individuals in the greater Whittier area and a huge improvement for the neighborhood’s development.

WHAT’S COOL IN YOUR SCHOOL Whittier Union High School District Freshmen Receive Warm Welcome On Freshman First Day Marching bands, balloons, pep squads, student mentors and eager teachers and administrators greeted this year’s freshmen class during the Whittier Union High School District’s Freshman First Day, a District-wide program designed to ease ninth graders’ transition from middle to high school. During Freshman First Day, ninth graders are given campus maps, schedules and school information and are guided through their classes by teachers, administrators, counselors and special teams of student volunteers called Link Crew Leaders. The Link Crew members act as mentors to the freshmen throughout their first year. In addition to acquainting freshmen with their classrooms and teachers, Freshman First Day also includes bonding activities to help ninth graders get to know each other and opportunities to sign up for campus clubs and extracurricular activities in an effort to get newcomers involved right off the bat. Now in its seventh year, Freshman First Day takes place at each of Whittier Union High School District’s five comprehensive high schools as part of a District-wide strategy to provide extra support to ninth graders in order for them to get off to a good start that will help propel them on a positive path for their entire high school career. “Our goal is for each student to feel confident and connected,” said Sandra Thorstenson, Whittier Union High School District’s Superintendent. “If students feel connected to their school and have a sense of belonging they will graduate at a much higher rate. Freshmen First Day is one of many ways our staff demonstrates they are committed to improving our students’ well-being and ability to achieve.” For the Link Crew Leaders, Freshman First Day is a way to give back by providing the kind of peer support they received when they were freshmen. “As a freshman, I had Link Crew mentors who really helped me when I needed it,” said Pioneer High School senior Glenn Ochoa. “I want to give this year’s freshmen that same great experience.” Pioneer High School freshman Robert Castaneda, who is one of the students in Ochoa’s group, says he’s thankful for Freshman First Day and the Link Crew. “Without Freshman First Day, I think I would have felt lost, and Glenn is like a brother to me – he’s always there to help.” Castaneda said. “Freshman First Day and Link Crew make a great combo. St. Paul to Kick Off 2011 Season and Ancich “Farewell Tour” Coach Marijon Ancich has guided the St. Paul Football program for 38 years. With 19 league titles, 3 CIF titles and a State Championship, he also owns the record for most victories of any prep coach in Southern California history with over 350 wins. Over the years, Coach Ancich has influenced thousands of young men as well as his colleagues in the coaching ranks. When announcing his retirement 9 months ago, Ancich stated, “When I think of facing the 2011 schedule and knowing it will be my last year at St. Paul, it puts a different outlook on the approach I’ll take. There will really be a lot more effort and meaning behind the preparations and meetings, so that I leave with a positive and successful year that the Swordsmen can build the future on.” It is the confidence and rich tradition fostered by Coach A that has created his outstanding legacy in St. Paul’s history! The St. Paul family extends a warm invitation to all the festivities surrounding Coach A’s final season at the helm. Including the always exciting football games, other events include a Homecoming Tailgate Party, Hall of Fame Ceremony, a “Thank You, Coach A” BBQ and an end of the season Gala. This invitation is extended to all St. Paul alumni, current or former students and families, City of Santa Fe Springs, Norwalk and greater Whittier area community members as well as anyone interested in joining us. Depression at the Holidays
As the year-end holidays are just around the corner be alert for Caregivers' risk for experiencing depression. Family members who provide part or full time care for a loved one are 30 times greater than that of non-caregivers, particularly among those caring for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients, according to the National Institutes on Health. In an effort to provide the best possible care for a family member or friend, caregivers often sacrifice their own physical and emotional needs, and the emotional and physical experiences involved with providing care can strain even the most capable person. The resulting feelings of anger, anxiety, sadness, isolation, exhaustion—and then guilt for having these feelings—can exact a heavy toll. But don't accept that depression is par for course as part of caregiving. It doesn't have to be that way! Here are some ways to help combat depression. 1. Talk Back to the Negative Thoughts Therapeutic discipline called Cognitive Behavior Therapy, states that our thoughts cause feelings and behaviors, not external things, like people, situations and events. We can change the way we think to feel and act better even if the situation does not change. Positive thinking can replace the negative thinking that is part of depression. "Talking back to negative thoughts" such as "I'm worthless" with positive thoughts that challenge the notion "I'm not worthless, I care for a family and I am a good person" restructures negative thought patterns, so you can interpret your environment in a less biased way. 2. Participate in Life Take a break from caregiving! No one can do it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Find some respite – from family, friends, adult day care, in-home companions, whatever it takes – and participate in activities that may make you feel better, such as going to a movie or ballgame, gardening, exercise, attending church or going to a social event. 3. Talk to Friends Don't go it alone. Friends are there to help you through the bad times. Don't bottle up your feelings and keep them to yourself. Try to be with other people and to confide in someone; it is usually better than being alone and secretive. Crying on a supportive friend's shoulder can have an immediate and positive impact on your mood. Continued on page 18

OFFICE LIFE Do Adults Need Recess On the Job?
By Anya Martin, Monster Contributing Writer

More admins are involved in meeting planning today than ever before. Follow this advice to avoid mistakes and ensure your function is a success. Common Pitfalls Sarah McMillen, senior administrative assistant at Alcoa Mill Products in Texarkana, Texas, cites three common fumbles made by beginner meeting planners: not ordering enough food or beverages, not asking sufficiently detailed questions of site personnel and vendors and waiting until the last minute to pull everything together. If problems do occur, act proactively and creatively, McMillen says. At a leadershiptraining seminar, a projector failed and couldn't be repaired or replaced, while the podium was at the room's rear. "I asked the group to turn their chairs around, and then we were OK and we proceeded," she recalls. Be Meticulous Jo Peay, executive assistant to the CEO at Winston-Salem, North Carolina-based pharmaceutical firm Targacept, suggests that successful meeting planning comes down to three tenets: attention to detail, organizational skills and working within a set budget. Peay, who also runs her own wedding-planning business, prepares meeting checklists, which she modifies with each assignment. While she keeps much of her information electronically, she creates a notebook with tabs to hold hard copies of documents, such as menus and hotel and vendor contracts. She not only develops folders for out-of-town conference attendees that include travel information and meeting details, but also provides valuable information to attendees as they arrive, anticipating that they inevitably will leave key materials at home. "This could almost be considered obsessive behavior, but that's my job, and it reflects back on me and my company," Peay says. Other important skills for meeting planners include negotiating, building relationships, networking and double-checking all arrangements -- literally up to the day of the conference. "Whether it's food or other services, people promise me the moon, but it's not very often that they deliver it if I don't stay on top of things," Peay says. Valuable Resources Professional organizations provide a wealth of information for both budding and seasoned meeting planners, says Inge Hafkemeyer, convention and meeting manager for the International Association of Administrative Professionals. These groups offer networking opportunities and educational programs. Meeting Professionals International: This is the largest trade association for the meetingplanning industry with 19,000 members, approximately evenly divided between planners and suppliers. The organization publishes the Meeting Professional magazine, holds conferences and offers continuing education. Professional Convention Management Association: This group hosts an annual meeting in January and publishes Convene magazine. You should also contact the local convention and visitor’s bureau where your meeting will be taking place. They can provide information on meeting sites, vendors, restaurants and sightseeing for spare time. And if you want to learn more about meeting planning, you can explore taking hospitality courses.
The spontaneity and freedom of taking a break from the classroom to run around aimlessly, hang on handle bars or jump rope with friends, was a luxury that I had as a kid. Now that I’m older, recess is nothing more than a memory. But that may not be the case for long. Though we can’t all leave our desk for the nearest playground, the idea of daily exercise on the job isn’t far fetched. Just ask the author of Instant Recess, Dr. Antronette K. Yancey, a professor of health services at the University of California, Los Angeles, who calls the concept, “the aerobics of the 21st century — an updated exercise prescription for an increasingly over scheduled, ethnically diverse, multicultural, media-andinformation-technology-driven global modern society.” Just 10-minutes? Recess for grown-ups according to her book, would mean short ten-minute breaks of low-impact group physical activity usually done to music in the workplace environment itself. From “sitting” bans, to conference rooms with elliptical machines, or even mandatory “walking meetings,” she mentions a number of ways to get co-workers off their bottoms. One such retailer has already seen a 100% return on investment. L.L. Bean instituted three fiveminute stretch breaks 15 years ago. The company found a 30-minute return on productivity. Because the sessions are so short, participants may not see any weight loss from recess at work alone, but Yancey’s studies have shown an increase in physical activity outside the workplace for those who take part. Workouts with Incentives A study by University of Georgia exercise and health researchers corroborates Yancey’s findings of increased physical activity for employer-sponsored workouts. A three-month study led by Rod Dishman, professor of exercise science in UGA's College of Education, reported a 20-point increase in moderate and vigorous exercise sessions among its 1,442 participants. The sustained progress throughout the study, Dishman says has to do with, “social incentives and support from personal goals and achievements that had direct impact on team success." With only one-third of adults in the U.S. regularly participating in the recommended 30-minutes a day of moderate or vigorous physical activity, the study’s results have important implications for public policy. From Little League to Big Kid League While many work sites may not have on-the-job recess for years to come, many encourage leagues where co-workers create teams and play against other companies. Instead of basketball and softball, which may be too intimidating for someone just starting out, go for play leagues. Many are just like the recess you remember, playing kickball, dodgeball, and other childhood games just for fun. General searches for sports and social clubs usual turn up good results. Just keep your eyes open for ways to get active and have a good time. You may have to hit the gym regularly to get and keep a healthy body, but the more you find ways to incorporate play as exercise, the easier it’ll be to incorporate into your lifestyle. Your thoughts… Would you participate in workplace recess? If not, when was the last time you played a childhood game?

NETWORKING QUOTE Woodside Florist and Theresa's Treasures Boutique would like to thank the Whittier Chamber for giving us so many opportunities to network every month. We are not regular golfers, but helping with the Hathaway Golf Classic was a great experience for us. We were able to meet new people that we may not have met in other settings. The golfers were very friendly and willing to network with both of us while waiting to move about to the next hole. We love being supported in our business, which is why we believe it is just as important to support our fellow Chamber members too! Come in soon to see all the new and exciting gifts we have for the holidays! Theresa Garcia, Theresa’s Treasures Danielle Teodoro, Woodside Florist

TASTY TUESDAY z
COFFEE BREAK
Whittier Chamber ladies rule! These women enjoyed their business networking over a delicious lunch at Sage Restaurant & Lounge
Make This Halloween Fang-tastic with This Hauntingly Helpful Checklist As seen on www.realsimple.com Carved jack-o’-lanterns: Greet guests with a lineup of these lighted hosts on your stoop or porch. Pumpkins and decorative gourds: Display these in clusters around your home. Try different ways of dressing up your pumpkins—spray them with metallic paint for a golden glow or use chalkboard paint to make faces or write messages (a great project for the kids). Fake cobwebs and spiders, paper bats, balloons and other decorations: Hang cobwebs and spiders in the corners of your room, let bats and banners dangle from the ceiling and go all-out with festive or frightening décor to create the right atmosphere. Shop for supplies from OrientalTrading.com, which has a wide selection of creepy goods—bags of bones, ghosts and tombstones. Halloween is one holiday when it’s OK to be over-the-top! Candles: Scatter lots of votives throughout your party and group pillars of varying heights and sizes together. Display a candelabra for dramatic flair. Spooky music: Put together a playful playlist of favorite songs, such as The Doors’ “People Are Strange” and Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” or invest in a soundtrack of creepy sound effects. Try Martha Stewart Living’s Spooky Scary Sounds (which includes knives being sharpened, thumping heartbeats and howling winds) or Halloween Horrorscapes, which features tracks titled “Blood Hunt” and “Alone at the Cabin” (including thunder, screams, snarling monsters and chainsaws–definitely not for the faint of heart). Halloween movies: Play classic horror films in the background (on mute if you don’t want the sound to be distracting) to get guests in the mood, such as Friday the 13th, The Exorcist, or naturally, Halloween. For less frightening movies that still set the tone, try The Addams Family, Beetlejuice, or—the best feel-good Halloween flick ever—It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Costume accessories: Whether you’re hosting a costume party or not, it’s always fun to have some extra dress-up items around. Set out some masks and wigs, plastic fangs, hats, a cape, a tiara, a feather boa—whatever suits your fancy—and let your guests get creative. Camera: Don’t forget to recharge your batteries and clear space on your memory card before your Halloween bash. Designate a friend or family member as the party photographer so you’ll have one less thing to worry about.

These Whittier Chamber members enjoyed a friendly conversation at Sage Restaurant & Lounge during the recent Tasty Tuesday networking lunch
Trick or Treat! Enjoy a little Halloween humor… What breed of horse does the Boogie Man ride? Answer: Night Mares! Why did the vampire read the Wall Street Journal? Answer: Because he heard it had great circulation! Why don’t mummies take vacations? Answer: They’re afraid they’ll relax and unwind!

Boys & Girls Club of Whittier Annual Gala & Auction Slated for October 22, 2011 On Saturday, October 22, 2011, the Boys & Girls Club of Whittier will host its 37th Annual Gala Auction at the Friendly Hills Country Club, 8500 S. Villaverde Dr. in Whittier, where the 3rd annual Lee Owens Award will be presented to one of the community’s most benevolent and extraordinary couples, Letty and Jay Hernandez. “The Lee Owens Award has been created to recognize a recipient from within the Boys & Girls Club of Whittier’s service area who exemplifies Lee’s own spirit of giving. For more than 30 years, Lee was an avid cheerleader for the Club’s growth and development, and a grand supporter who always stepped up when there was a need. But most of all he was a compassionate man who wanted to see our youth have a safe and fun place to call their own… a place that was founded on respect for others, belief in talents and the potential for all,” says Samantha Ridout, Executive Director of the Club. Over the years, Letty and Jay Hernandez have led by example and their passion to improve the lives of Whittier children, especially those who find their second home at the Boys & Girls Club of Whittier, has made them the perfect recipients for the Lee Owens Award. Proceeds from the 37th Annual Gala Auction will be used to support the continued daily operations of the Boys & Girls Club of Whittier. “As we see our families besieged everyday with difficult obstacles, we understand with even more clarity, the stability and health our Club brings to this community and the role that we play in its future,” shares Theola Kirschenbaum, 2011 Gala Chairman. If you are interested in attending or contributing to the Boys & Girls Club of Whittier’s Gala Auction, please call (562) 945-3787 x102 or email deb@bgcw.org. Tickets are $175 per person and seating is limited.

Shelter’s Right Hand Announces 5K Fitness Walk Most Successful To Date Nearly 600 walkers and 130 volunteers came together on Saturday, April 30, 2011 for the Shelter’s Right Hand 15th Annual “Stepping Out Against Domestic Violence” 5K Fitness Walk. Over $49,000 was raised in support of the Women’s and Children Crisis Shelter (WCCS) making this year’s Walk the most successful ever! When added to other generous donations and its “Sacks on the Boulevard” Thrift Shop sales, the Shelter’s Right Hand was able to give WCCS $100,000 this year. Shelter’s Right Hand would like to thank the Whittier Chamber, Whittier businesses, donors, walkers, volunteers and thrift-shop shoppers for their ongoing support of the Shelter’s Right Hand and WCCS. Domestic violence remains a devastating public health issue. It can be found in any socio-economic, ethnic, religious or age group. A victim can be highly educated and/or wealthy. It is alarming to know that one in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime, and most domestic violence cases are never reported to the police. October is designated as “Domestic Violence Awareness Month.” If you know someone who is a victim, encourage her to call the Women’s and Children’s Crisis Shelter. Please continue to support the Shelter’s Right Hand, WCCS and advocates across the nation who are working tirelessly to end violence against women and children. For more information on the organization, visit www.sheltersrighthand.org.

OCTOBER 2011
“10 Ways to Stop Caregiver-Related Depression at the Holidays” - continued from page 8
4. Look into Self Help Books can be buddies too! There are numerous books on the topic of depression and they are filled with techniques to deal with the sadness, anxiety and feelings of isolation that caregivers often experience. Visit your bookstore, or search amazon.com for depression. "Feeling Good" and "Beyond Blue" are two that come highly recommended. 5. Keep a Record Start a diary and write down your feelings. Writing what you're feeling can provide a release for those emotions. Also, look for patterns. Do certain events, people or situations worsen your depression? One definition of suffering is doing the same thing over and over again, each time expecting different results. Next time that situation arises, you will notice if you are acting in the same way that didn't work in the past and can change that behavior. 6. Stay Busy An inability to get through daily tasks can be a crippling symptom of depression. Feeling unable to make a decision or take a needed action can immobilize a caregiver. To overcome immobility, set realistic goals in light of the depression and assume a reasonable amount of responsibility. Break large tasks into small ones, set some priorities and do what you can as you can. 7. Start a Project The fastest way to get out of your head is to get into a new project--compiling a family album, knitting a blanket, heading a civic association, taking an online course, etc. Focusing your mind and your energy on a task makes it harder to focus on negative emotions. 8. Look for Strength in Numbers Support groups for people who suffer from depression meet in virtually every local community. Also, look for groups geared towards caregivers. Knowing you are not alone in your struggle eliminates those feelings of isolation. 9. Get Professional Help There are many treatments available for depression. Talk to your doctor about the symptoms you are experiencing and find a treatment plan that is right for you. This might include medications, counseling or both. 10. Be Patient Expect your mood to improve gradually, not immediately. Feeling better takes time. People rarely "snap out of" a depression. But they can feel a little better day-by-day. Dave Forman Co-owner and Manager Cornerstone Home Care Solutions LLP
Put Me Back In the Game Coach! The ProAdjuster is the Answer. You may remember that last football game in college where in the final seconds you scored that game winning touch-down, or that one spike you slammed that won the division title. However, many of us athletes remember that devastating torn ACL that ended our track career, or the pulled hamstring that put you on the bench for the remainder of the season. Injuries like these are often overlooked as common and temporary, but that is not always the case. It is important to treat these injuries properly. Your career as an athlete may depend on it. Sports injuries are common in today’s society. Due to increases in athletes’ size, speed, power and strength, greater stress is placed upon athletes’ muscles, tendons and ligaments. The fact is that sports are hard on our bodies. The training and repetitive motion sometimes leaves athletes more susceptible to injury, resulting in unnecessary pulled muscles, tendonitis, stress fractures and unfortunately more often, a lifetime of chronic pain. Our office has experienced considerable success in relieving chronic pain associated with sports injuries. We utilize state-of-the-art technology, the ProAdjuster, to identify the source of your pain. In fact, the ProAdjuster’s revolutionary technology has received a patient satisfaction rating of over 92%.

Common Misconceptions about Sports Injuries
If you or someone you know is suffering from a sports injury, you may want to consider being evaluated with the ProAdjuster.
