Jack Mahlstede, Ernie Hernandez Honored with the Good Scout Award Outstanding community members Jack Mahlstede and Ernie Hernandez will be honored as the 2011 Rio Hondo Good Scouts of the Year at a special dinner event on Thursday, November 17 in the grand ballroom at the Radisson Hotel (7320 Greenleaf Ave., Whittier). This is the 27th year of the Scouting awards. Perpetual honorary Co-Chairs are Ruth B. Shannon and Joan Woehrmann, and this year’s Dinner CoChairs are Debbie Baker and Joe & Bonnie Price, last year’s award recipients. JACK MAHLSTEDE Jack Mahlstede was born to coach and has been associated with sports his entire life, including playing and coaching football in high school and college. After graduating from Long Beach State, he became the Assistant Coach at Victor Valley H.S. and later began coaching at Santa Fe H.S. Over 42 years, he has achieved a very respectable record of wins and losses and was named Outstanding Coach of the League, has been recognized by the 605 All Star Game Committee several times and was also inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2010. In addition, he was selected by Channel 7 Sports News as "Coach of the Week" 3 times in his career. In 2005, he was honored by the City of Santa Fe Springs & the Santa Fe Springs Chamber of Commerce for his "Outstanding and Dedicated Service to the Santa Fe Springs Community” and was also recognized by the City of Santa Fe Springs and the Whittier Union High School District when he achieved his 200th win.

ERNIE HERNANDEZ After playing crude versions of Duane Eddy hits and “La Bamba” on a guitarshaped piece of plywood he made as a Boy Scout, a young Ernie Hernandez knew his gift was in music. After his family moved to Santa Fe Springs in 1960, Ernie was already working with rock bands, mariachis and swing orchestras. Early in his marriage, Ernie, his wife Linda and their daughter Felice lived “on the road” for 7 years, driving a 1967 Volkswagon van across the United States and Canada. In 1977, when it was time for Felice to start kindergarten, the family settled down in Whittier. Ernie formed Calendar Entertainment Services in Uptown Whittier in 1983, which led to membership with The Whittier Uptown Association, the Whittier Chamber, the Kiwanis Club - Rio Hondo Chapter and Le Tip of Whittier (Past President). Community service has become a huge part of Ernie’s life and with the help of his musical friends, they’ve donated thousands of hours of free, live entertainment to non-proﬁt fundraiser events and groups including The Salvation Army Transitional Living Center, Whittier Public Library, Kiwanis International, American Cancer Society, The Red Cross – Rio Hondo Chapter, Boys & Girls Club of Whittier, First Day, Special Olympics Lions Club, Philharmonic Society of Orange County, Skills for Adolescents, The Whittier Police Silver Shield Award Banquet, Whittier Host Lions Club, Soroptimist Club of Whittier, Women's & Children's Crisis Shelter, Annual YMCA Christmas Prayer Breakfast, La Providencia for Children’s Hospital, senior homes and local Whittier schools.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE During the month of November, I am reminded with each passing day that we have so much for which to be thankful. It’s easy to get caught up in the tough economy, the struggling business that consumes our day or the stories of those less fortunate around us. Granted we are all working through difﬁcult times and those things are in need of our attention. But at the end of the day, it is all just noise interfering with the most important aspects in our lives. MAYOR’S MESSAGE Did you know Saturday, November 26 is “Small Business Saturday?” The day after “Black Friday” and the Saturday after Thanksgiving was founded as Small Business Saturday by American Express last year. This year, Small Business Saturday is expected to be bigger and better for independent retailers. According to the online magazine, Business News Daily, Google and Twitter have joined American Express in spreading the word about Small Business Saturday. The Whittier City Council is hopeful the media buzz surrounding the event will help our local entrepreneurs capitalize on sales that day. Challenge yourself to shop locally during the holiday Cathy Warner, shopping season and throughout the year - your fellow Whittier Whittier City Mayor businesses will appreciate it. The City continues to move forward through the lengthy process responding to the applicant (Matrix) for Mineral Extraction in the Whittier Hills. Last month, the Planning Commission was presented with the final environmental impact report (EIR) and conducted public hearings on the matter. The Planning Commission Public Hearing meetings were held at the Radisson Hotel to ensure interested persons could be adequately accommodated in one large room. Due to the complexity and potential financial and environmental impacts, the Whittier City Council has determined the need to provide the public with an additional forum to voice their opinions. Therefore, City Council public hearings have been scheduled to begin on November 8, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. It is anticipated that only presentations will occur on November 8 and that public testimony will begin on November 9, and possibly be continued to an additional night. If you wish to submit oral or written comments for the public hearing, you should plan to attend the November 9 meeting. If additional meetings are needed, they will be held November 14 and/or November 15. The City Council public hearing will also be held at the Radisson Hotel, 7320 Greenleaf Ave. Please check the website at www.cityofwhittier. org or call the Community Development Department at (562) 567-9320 for more information. As reported last month, the City of Whittier was once again selected as a finalist for the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) Most Business Friendly City Award. The finalist will be announced this month on November 3, at the Annual Eddy Awards dinner. This is the third year in a row that Whittier is named as a finalist in the category of cities with a population over 60,000. The Council is grateful to the Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce and the Uptown Association who serve as our partners in creating an environment for economic growth. The City recently received an update from the developer of the former Stats site, who shared that they anticipate breaking ground early next year. Staff was informed that plans will be submitted very soon. Congratulations to the Whittier Community Foundation for coordinating another successful “Fit for Life 5k Race and Walk.” With more registered entrants this year, the Foundation will easily meet the fundraising goal for the outdoor fitness equipment that will be placed along the newly developed Greenway Trail. Winter Wonderland in Uptown Whittier “Winter Wonderland” is the theme for the 2011 Uptown Holiday Season of Events. The Whittier Uptown Association will kick off the season with the Grand Illumination at Rick's Drive In & Out on Friday, December 2 from 5 to 9 p.m. This event marks the kick-off to the holiday season with the lighting of the 30 ft. Christmas tree, the Whittier High School Marching Band, local community entertainment, carriage rides and Santa Claus accompanied by his elves. Along with the festivities, the winners of the Uptown Holiday Window Contest will also be announced. Judging for this event will be held on November 29. All Uptown Allan Nakken, businesses are encouraged to participate by decorating their Executive Director windows with some holiday cheer! Whittier Uptown Association The Whittier Uptown Association Board of Directors and President Sandra Hahn are very excited to officially announce that they will have a professionally installed and managed synthetic ice skating rink available to residents during the holidays! The Association has been working hard toward this goal and are now ready to bring something new and fun to the Uptown area this year. This attraction will be installed on the famous Green Belt Area along Greenleaf Avenue in the heart of Uptown Whittier. Hours of operation for the rink are as follows:

“Beyond Social Media: Direct Marketing in the Internet Age” Join the City of Whittier and the Whittier Chamber on Thursday, November 10 for a free business seminar Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce presented by Rich Casford, President of Whittier Mailing Service. Social media is all the rage these days, but whatever happened to good old fashioned mail? Attend this workshop to learn how direct marketing can be used to enhance those efforts. Mr. Casford will discuss advantages of including direct marketing within your social media and web based marketing plans. Rich will also give a short update on postal issues currently facing Congress. Rich serves on the Mailers Technical Advisory Work Group of the US Postal Service in Washington, D.C. and is a frequent speaker on Postal and Direct Mail topics. The B.O.S.S. program was developed in 2009 by the City of Whittier as part of the City’s Local Economic Stimulus and Business Assistance Plan and the monthly workshops are co-sponsored by the Whittier Chamber of Commerce. The seminar will be limited to 50 people and space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The seminar will be held in the Whittier Central Library’s Nixon Room, 7344 Washington Avenue. Whittier Announced as Finalist for 2011 Most Business-Friendly City Competition The City of Whittier, along with 5 other L.A. County cities in its division, was announced by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) as a finalist for its 2011 Most Business-Friendly City in Los Angeles County award. Whittier joins the cities of Burbank, Carson, Glendale, Torrance, and West Covina as finalists for the population 60,000 and over category. The winner will be announced live at the 16th Annual Eddy® Awards on Thursday, November 3, at the Beverly Hilton. Inaugurated in 1996, the Eddy® Awards gala has become the most important economic development award program in the state of California. In 2006, the LAEDC created the “business-friendly” award category to recognize cities within the County that are proactively promoting business-friendly programs and services. “The 2011 finalists stand out as model communities in Los Angeles County that are proactively engaging and working with businesses and the private sector to create jobs for their residents,” said LAEDC president and CEO, Bill Allen. “In the midst of a prolonged economic crisis, these cities have shown they truly understand the importance of attracting, retaining and growing businesses to create much-needed jobs and generate necessary tax revenue for important public programs. Join me in honoring all of our city finalists as we work together to ensure a strong, diverse and sustainable economy for all of L.A. Whittier’s Economic Development Strategy represents the blueprint for business attraction, retention and sustainability, including Redevelopment Project areas, support of a Foreign Trade Zone, Retailer Recruitment and Reward Program, ombudsman services, entitlement and permit fee subsidies and banner permit fee reductions. The “Guide to Doing Business” in Whittier makes city processes easier to navigate. Whittier was also a finalist in 2009 and 2010.

FINANCIAL UPDATE Heightened Volatility: The New Normal? It’s not your imagination: The investment markets are bumpier than normal. As the U.S. economy continues to try to find its footing -- every piece of bad news, whether at home or abroad, has the potential to send the markets reeling. All this volatility can make it tough on investors to stay the course. Historically speaking, the equity market today is about three times more volatile than it has been in the past. Specifically, the S&P 500 rose or fell by 2% or more an average of 5 times per year from 1950 Douglas M. Rowan, until 1999. Since 2000, however, that average jumped to 12.5 times CFP®, CMFC, per year for advances and more than 14 times for declines.1 What’s AIF® more, 10 of the 20 largest daily upswings and 11 of the 20 largest daily drops since the beginning of 1980 have occurred within the last three years.2 Who or what deserves the blame for heightened market volatility is difficult to say. On the economic side, uncertainty about when and how fully the economy will recover is a major factor. So are factors such as the heightened reliance on government monetary policy, unsustainable fiscal trends, and the apparent lack of collaboration among legislators in Washington. On the investment side, high-frequency trading, hedge funds, and inverse and leveraged ETFs all contribute to the volatility. What Can You Do? Regardless of the drivers, heightened volatility requires individual investors and their advisors to exercise specific investment strategies. While many of these strategies are basic investing concepts that can be applied at any time, they are particularly important in a volatile environment. Don’t follow the herd. Don’t sell into a rapidly declining market and don’t buy into a rapidly rising market. You’ll just be following the herd and potentially locking in losses. Studies show time and time again, panic selling runs the risk of missing the market’s bestperforming days. Keep a long-term perspective. It is all too easy to get caught up in the market’s daily roller-coaster ride. This type of behavior is natural, but can easily lead to bad decisions. Instead, focus on whether your long-term performance objectives, i.e., your average returns over time, are meeting your goals. Take advantage of asset allocation. During volatile times, more risky asset classes such as stocks tend to fluctuate more, while lower-risk assets such as bonds or cash tend to be more stable. Often the performance of these lower-risk assets do not receive the same attention on the financial stations as the more volatile ones. By adhering to a strict policy, diligently applied, and allocating your investments among different asset classes, you can help smooth out the short-term ups and downs. Consider buying opportunities. Selectively adding to your portfolio when prices are low versus historical averages is a strategy worth considering. Continued on page 14

TAX TIPS Income Tax Rates Hold Steady Tax legislation passed at the end of 2010 – the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization , and Job Creation Act of 2010 – maintains the personal income tax rates that have been if effect since 2003. In 2011 and 2012, those rates range from 10% to 35%. In 2012, we might see yet another debate on future tax rates. Capital gains and dividends The 2011 and 2012 tax rates ranging from 10% to 35% are on Richard Scrivanich, ordinary income earnings, interest on savings accounts, pensions, Harvey & Parmelee and so on. For long-term capital gains and qualified dividend income LLP (which includes most dividends received by investors), the top tax rate remains at 15% for this year and the next. Therefore, investors are likely to continue to seek dividend paying stocks and all types of investments that may eventually produce long-term gains, such as stocks and real estate. What’s more, the tax rate on long-term gains and qualified dividends remains at 0% for taxpayers in the 10% and 15% tax brackets. In 2011, those brackets apply to single individuals with taxable income up to $34,500 and to married couples filing joint tax returns with taxable income up to $69,000. Consequently, some tax strategies remain effective. Suppose a retired couple projects they will have $50,000 of taxable income in 2011. If this couple holds appreciated securities, they could take as much as $19,000 of their long-term capital gains and owe 0% in tax on those gains. In addition, individual investors now can exclude from tax 100% of any gains from investments in certain small business stock. This tax exclusion has been 50% until a law passed in 2009 increased it to 75%, and a law passed in 2010 created a 100% tax exclusion. Under the new tax law, investors may qualify for 100% tax exclusion on gains from certain small business stock acquired after September 27, 2010, and before January 1, 2012.

Other income tax beneﬁts Beyond tax rates, the new law extends many income tax beneﬁts that were scheduled to end after 2010. For example, all taxpayers will be able to fully use their itemized deductions and personal exemptions in 2011 and 2012. If the new law had not been passed, certain high-income taxpayers would have lost some of those tax breaks. Similarly, some credits that had been scheduled to end or lose value are still available in 2011 and 2012 at 2010 levels. These include the earned income credit, the child tax credit, the dependent care credit, the adoption credit, and the American Opportunity Tax Credit for higher education. The research tax credit, which expired at the end of 2009, was reinstated retroactively for 2010 and remains if effect for 2011. Coverdell Education Savings Accounts sill have a $2,000 annual contribution limit, not the $500 cap that would have returned. Some individual tax provisions were reinstated retroactively, so they apply to 2010, as well as 2011.This list includes optional deductions for state and local sales taxes, higher education tuition deductions, teachers’ deductions for classroom expenses, IRA charitable rollovers for taxpayers age 70 ½ and older, and enhanced tax advantages for some donations of conversation easements.

WHAT’S COOL IN YOUR SCHOOL Former Tri-Cities ROP Student Awarded Nursing Scholarship From Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital Foundation “I would like to thank Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital for giving me the opportunity to expand my education,” stated Juan Escobedo, PIH Registered Nurse as he addressed the audience at the recent PIH Foundation Golf Tournament. Juan was awarded a $3,000.00 scholarship which will not only help him offset his costs for a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree that he will receive this December from Cal State University Fullerton, but will also allow him to continue his studies as he applies for graduate work in Gerontology at Cal State Long Beach. Reanna Thompson, PIH Director of Nursing stated, "Each year, scholarships are given to a select group of Registered Nurses at PIH who are pursuing higher education, specifically a Bachelors or Masters of Science in Nursing. It is the goal of PIH to have over 50% of our nurses prepared at the Baccalaureate level in the next five years. Juan applied for the scholarship and was selected from numerous candidates because he reflects the characteristics of clinical excellence, care and compassion and the desire for continued professional growth and development. Juan has had numerous roles at PIH and in each one, he has performed to the highest standards. We are proud of Juan as a professional Registered Nurse and are confident that he will continue to be a leader and role model at PIH." While a senior at Whittier High School in 1998, Juan suffered a lung collapse and found himself being treated at PIH. He explained to the audience at the Golf Tournament event how well the medical and nursing staff at PIH took care of him. “Thanks you guys! One RN, Joe Rigalotto inspired me to go into nursing,” continued Juan. "I found out about and enrolled in a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) course at Tri-Cities Regional Occupational Program (TCROP) while in high school. I thank TCROP for giving me the opportunity, without them I wouldn’t be here now and have reached my ultimate goal of being an RN,” stated Juan. His TCROP teacher was Wanda De Pena, R.N. and she supervised his CNA internship at the Southland Care Center nursing home in Norwalk. Superintendent Norm Kirschenbaum, explained, “Tri-Cities ROP currently offers a variety of high school elective Health and Hospital career classes on all the high school campuses in the Whittier Union High School District as well as El Rancho High school. Over 475 high students are daily enrolled in these Health related classes and are receiving a headstart on an exciting and rewarding career pathway. There is no cost to the high school students for these classes and the students receive not only high school graduation credit but also college credit from Rio Hondo Community College because of articulation agreements between TCROP and Rio Hondo College. The job market in the health industry is extremely bright and attractive to students who are inclined to see themselves serving in the medical field.” After finishing his Certified Nursing Assistant class, Juan attended Rio Hondo College for two years where he completed the pre-requisites to enter the Registered Nursing program. He

completed his Nursing studies at Rio Hondo College graduating in 2005 with an A.N.D. (Associate Degree in Nursing). While attending Rio Hondo College, Juan worked at Shay Convalescent Home as a Certiﬁed Nursing Assistant. He then took a job at Brea Community Hospital as a CNA, then PIH where he worked as a CAN, Phlebotomist and then a Monitor Technician reading EKG’s. “My grandmother and parents encouraged me to pursue and complete a B.S. in Nursing. My grandmother always stated that the more education you obtain, the more doors of opportunity will open for you. This motivated and pushed me to pursue nursing and has allowed me to grow professionally,” explained Juan. Rio Hondo Professor Receives Leadership Award At Green California Community Colleges Summit Rio Hondo College is extremely proud to announce that Advanced Transportation Technologies and Energy Professor John Frala received the 2011 Leadership Award, in the Instructor category, at this year’s Green California Community Colleges Summit in Pasadena during the month of October. The award honors Frala’s “decade’s-long work as an instructor who brings sustainability concepts into community college automotive repair instruction.” With more than 40 years of experience in the transportation and alternative fuels industry, Frala offers Rio Hondo students extensive knowledge and training in the latest and emerging technologies: “gasohol”, ethanol blends, clean natural gas, liquefied natural gas, hydrogen, hybrid, all-electric, and biofuel construction and use. Further, his biofuel workshops at Rio Hondo have turned algae, grown in test tubes on campus, into a viable fuel for use in the College’s diesel equipment. Frala actively pursues, and receives, alternative automotive fuel grants to develop original and specialized courses for the students in the Alternative Fuels Technology Program at Rio Hondo. Last year, Frala’s efforts resulted in a grant from the State’s Economic and Workforce Development Program for Industry Driven Regional Collaboratives to create a technician training on a pure plug-in electric vehicle. “I have been given a gift by Rio Hondo College,” said Frala. “That gift is to explore, and bring students, staff, local business, and local elected officials, the knowledge of environmental and automotive technology. OFFICE LIFE 10 Time Management Tips That Work Are you working on clock time or 'real' time? Learn how to manage your day by understanding the difference with these 10 time management tips. By Joe Matthews, Don Debolt and Deb Percival As seen on www.entrepreneur.com Chances are good that, at some time in your life, you've taken a time management class, read about it in books, and tried to use an electronic or paper-based day planner to organize, prioritize and schedule your day. "Why, with this knowledge and these gadgets," you may ask, "do I still feel like I can't get everything done I need to?" The answer is simple. Everything you ever learned about managing time is a complete waste of time because it doesn't work. Before you can even begin to manage time, you must learn what time is. A dictionary defines time as "the point or period at which things occur." Put simply, time is when stuff happens. There are two types of time: clock time and real time. In clock time, there are 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour, 24 hours in a day and 365 days in a year. All time passes equally. When someone turns 50, they are exactly 50 years old, no more or no less. In real time, all time is relative. Time flies or drags depending on what you're doing. Two hours at the department of motor vehicles can feel like 12 years. And yet our 12-year-old children seem to have grown up in only two hours. Which time describes the world in which you really live, real time or clock time? The reason time management gadgets and systems don't work is that these systems are designed to manage clock time. Clock time is irrelevant. You don't live in or even have access to clock time. You live in real time, a world in which all time flies when you are having fun or drags when you are doing your taxes. The good news is that real time is mental. It exists between your ears. You create it. Anything you create, you can manage. It's time to remove any self-sabotage or self-limitation you have around "not having enough time," or today not being "the right time" to start a business or manage your current business properly. There are only three ways to spend time: thoughts, conversations and actions. Regardless of the type of business you own, your work will be composed of those three items. As an entrepreneur, you may be frequently interrupted or pulled in different directions. While you cannot eliminate interruptions, you do get a say on how much time you will spend on them and how much time you will spend on the thoughts, conversations and actions that will lead you to success. 1.

Practice the following techniques to become the master of your own time: Carry a schedule and record all your thoughts, conversations and activities for a week. This will help you understand how much you can get done during the course of a day and where your precious moments are going. You'll see how much time is actually spent producing results and how much time is wasted on unproductive thoughts, conversations and actions.

Any activity or conversation that's important to your success should have a time assigned to it. To-do lists get longer and longer to the point where they're unworkable. Appointment books work. Schedule appointments with yourself and create time blocks for high-priority thoughts, conversations, and actions. Schedule when they will begin and end. Have the discipline to keep these appointments. 3. Plan to spend at least 50 percent of your time engaged in the thoughts, activities and conversations that produce most of your results. 4. Schedule time for interruptions. Plan time to be pulled away from what you're doing. Take, for instance, the concept of having "office hours." Isn't "office hours" another way of saying "planned interruptions?" 5. Take the first 30 minutes of every day to plan your day. Don't start your day until you complete your time plan. The most important time of your day is the time you schedule to schedule time. 6. Take five minutes before every call and task to decide what result you want to attain. This will help you know what success looks like before you start. And it will also slow time down. Take five minutes after each call and activity to determine whether your desired result was achieved. If not, what was missing? How do you put what's missing in your next call or activity? 7. Put up a "Do not disturb" sign when you absolutely have to get work done. 8. Practice not answering the phone just because it's ringing and e-mails just because they show up. Disconnect instant messaging. Don't instantly give people your attention unless it's absolutely crucial in your business to offer an immediate human response. Instead, schedule a time to answer email and return phone calls. 9. Block out other distractions like Facebook and other forms of social media unless you use these tools to generate business. 10. Remember that it's impossible to get everything done. Also remember that odds are good that 20 percent of your thoughts, conversations and activities produce 80 percent of your results. In order to keep our frail homebound seniors safe, SASSFA Senior Services would like to provide each of our home delivered meal participants with an Emergency Survival Kit. Each kit would contain 3 days of water and food, a blanket and a flashlight. If additional funds are raised, SASSFA will also be able to add other emergency supplies such as a small first aid kit. These kits will be delivered as part of their holiday “Adopt an Angel” campaign this year. SASSFA’s goal is to purchase 300 kits. Beverly Hospital Diabetes Education Program Receives AADE Accreditation Beverly Hospital recently received accreditation of its diabetes education program by the American Association of Diabetes Educators. The public response to this event has always been enthusiastic, especially since, traditionally, the prices on the artwork have been kept low to enable visitors to buy art for their Christmas season giving. The show runs from November 3 to November 27. A reception will be held at the Gallery on Saturday November 5, from 3 to 6 p.m. Refreshments will be served and several of the artists featured will be doing demonstrations of their artistic process. The public is invited and encouraged to come meet the artists, ask questions or just enjoy viewing the exciting work on display. Upcoming Bra-vo Auction to Welcome Celebrity Guest Speaker Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital, the PIH Auxiliary, the Patricia L. Scheifly Breast Health Center Advisory Council and Soroptimist International of Whittier invite the community to their Bra-vo Auction, an uplifting exhibit of artwork created by breast cancer survivors. Shannon Center for the Performing Arts at Whittier College, 6760 Painter Ave. Celebrity guest speaker Meredith Baxter will give a special presentation during the afternoon events and host the live auction portion. Meredith is widely known for her role as the flower child mother on Family Ties, and has since produced and starred in many television films. Meredith has been involved in the fight against breast cancer for many years. Artwork has been created by breast cancer survivors as an expression of themselves using bras as the main art form. Addressing the alternative minimum tax The new law also includes another “patch” for the alternative minimum tax (AMT). Every year or two, a patch has increased the AMT exemption amount and allows nonrefundable personal credits to offset both regular tax and AMT liability. If Congress had not addressed the AMT issue, the AMT exemption amounts would have been $45,000 for joint filers; $33,750 for singles and heads of households; and $22,500 for married persons filing separately. As a result of the new law, fewer taxpayers will be subject to the AMT. Payroll tax holiday Although the new tax law generally does not change income taxes from 2010, it does provide a significant break in payroll taxes. During 2011, employees will contribute 4.2% of compensation for Social Security instead of the normal 6.2%. In 2011, employees pay Social Security tax on the first $106,800 of earned income. Thus, taxpayers who earn at least $106,800 in 2011 will save $2,136 in payroll tax: 2% of $106,800. Self-employed individuals will enjoy similar tax savings. Employers will continue to pay 6.2% of an employee’s earnings, up to $106,800. Under current law, the employee’s share of Social Security tax will go back to 6.2% in 2012.
