Seven candidates who are vying for three open seats on the Whittier City Council, including three incumbents, will share their visions for Whittier at the 2012 Whittier City Council Candidates’ Forum. The event will be held on Wednesday, March 14th at the Whittier Masonic Lodge located at 7604 Greenleaf Avenue (corner of Mar Vista and Greenleaf Avenue). The doors will open at 6:00 p.m. and the Candidates’ Forum will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. This event is free to the public and is hosted by the Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce and the Whittier Uptown Association. This year’s candidates are risk management consultant Nick Donovan, resident Lupe Garcia, former Municipal intern and Whittier College student Adrian Gonzales, project manager Craig Lebow, incumbent and professor Owen Newcomer, incumbent and local tax attorney Joe Vinatieri, and incumbent and Tri-Cities ROP teacher on special assignment Cathy Warner. The Candidates’ Forum will give Whittier residents the opportunity to hear city council candidates’ views and opinions on a variety of topics. The information that attendees take from this forum will enable them to make a more informed decision when they vote in the Whittier City Council election on Tuesday, April 10th. The Forum will begin with opening statements from each candidate. Pre-selected questions drafted by the Chamber’s Legislative committee and the Uptown Association’s Public Policy committee will then be asked of each candidate, with each person having a set amount of time to answer. Topics may include economic development plans, the Uptown Business District, the current economy and new businesses to Whittier. Chamber to Outline Recipe for Business Success at Annual Meeting and Installation Dinner Want to know what’s cooking at the Whittier Chamber? Join us for the 98 th Annual Meeting and Installation of Officers on Thursday, March 29th at Candlewood Country Club. At this dinner event, we will celebrate the past year and welcome Sue Dean from Notary Signing Network as the 98th President of the Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce. Dean will outline the “Recipe for Business Success” as she reveals the Board’s 2012-2013 action plan for the year. The dinner will begin with a 5:30 p.m. networking reception with the program beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $55 per person. As the conclusion of the Chamber’s 97th year of serving the business community nears ,we will celebrate another successful year and the end of the presidential term for Ben Greer of GM Properties. “We’ve had a really great year. Despite the struggling economy, we have been fortunate to see new businesses come to town and our membership numbers grow. To us, that indicates that what we are doing in terms of programs and services we provide is working for our members,” he stated. As with all good recipes, an outstanding product is created when you have all the right ingredients that happen to mix well together. Some of the new elements that we are adding to the mix are new and fresh and I really think we have laid the groundwork and everything is in place to have a very successful year,” added Dean. One activity that will take place at this enjoyable event is the installation of new representatives to the Chamber’s Board of Directors. We are looking forward to the new ideas and perspectives they will each bring to the Chamber table.” At the Installation we will also bid farewell to retiring board members Dean Harako from Pay Advance Payroll, Leighton Anderson from Bewley, Lassleben and Miller, Norm Kirschenbaum with Tri-Cities ROP, Roy Hanna with Bright Plaza Home Medical Equipment and Jin Chon from Rose Hills Memorial Park & Mortuary. Combined, these five leaders have given hundreds of hours of service to the Chamber over the years and their individual talents, dedication and contributions to the Board will be missed. It is hard to believe that my year as Whittier Chamber President is coming to an end. How time flies when you’re having fun! It seems like just yesterday I was “learning the ropes” and now I am writing my last Business Focus message! We have much to be proud of over these past twelve months. We set out this year with a renewed focus on moving from “Surviving” to “Thriving” and I am proud to say that the Chamber is fiscally sound, growing in membership and supported by a terrific and dedicated management team and office staff. We have made tremendous strides in improving the business Ben Greer, of the Whittier Area Chamber and have continued to maintain GM Properties the highest level of participation and success our events have ever seen. There’s something special about this Chamber and I believe it starts with our membership. Over the year I watched as Chamber members helped fellow Chamber members: they utilized their connections, cultivated relationships and these series of relationships created community. This sense of community is what keeps local business thriving today and tomorrow and it starts with you, the Whittier Chamber member. Thank you to all of the members and business owners for continuing to recognize the value in belonging to, participating in and supporting our Chamber. Equally important to the successes we so often experience here are the ladies who make up the Chamber staff. I have relied heavily on the Chamber team to ensure that our events, Business Focus and membership continue to “thrive” with the quality we have all grown to expect from the Whittier Chamber. Thank you for rising to the challenge and exceeding the Board’s expectations. I’d like to thank the Board of Directors. It takes strong leadership and people willing to make tough decisions when called for to maintain a successful organization. Each of our Board Members volunteered their time and expertise in helping guide the Chamber over the course of the past year. Thank you for serving our business community. I’d also like to thank Mayor Cathy Warner and the Whittier City Council for continuing to see the value in the services provided to the community through the Chamber. It is not often you find a City with such a strong partnership with its Chamber and, even more so, to have such a supportive city government. Together, we will continue to make Whittier a great place to do business. Finally, I would like to thank each and every one of you for your encouragement during my term. It’s been a privilege to serve as the 97th President of such a fine organization and to work alongside fellow business owners and friends. I look forward to “passing the baton” to Incoming President Sue Dean of Notary Signing Network and seeing you all at the Chamber’s upcoming Annual Business Meeting and Installation on March 29th!

Congratulations on another successful Silver Shield Awards dinner which was held on Friday, March 2nd. This is one of the Council’s favorite events as it is an opportunity for all of us to celebrate the dedicated men and women of the Whittier Police Department. Public safety is an important priority in Whittier and we are truly fortunate to have our own police department to serve and protect the residents and businesses of Whittier and Santa Fe Springs. This year’s event was particularly noteworthy as we honored the Whittier Police Department at the prestigious Richard Nixon Presidential Library. Thank you to the Whittier Chamber and the business community for your continued support of this event each year. Cathy Warner, Whittier City Mayor The City continues to work closely with our partners who include the Whittier Chamber, Whittier Uptown Association and Southeast Area Social Services Funding Authority (SASSFA) to provide the business community with support and opportunities for growth. The City of Whittier was gratified to be named by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) for the third year in a row as a finalist for the “Most Business Friendly City in Los Angeles County”, recognizing our economic development efforts and our successes. In regards to the former Stats site, the developer now has a fully executed lease with Sprouts Farmers Market and a ground breaking is anticipated to occur within the coming months. They indicate plans will be submitted very soon. The Whittier Public Library Foundation recently kicked off their fundraising campaign to provide enhancements for the Whittwood Branch Library expansion and renovation project. The Foundation intends to raise funds for children’s area enhancements and furniture, community room improvements and furniture, and additional technology for library patrons. The Branch Library was constructed in 1968 and will now expand from its original 9,400 square feet to almost 16,000 square feet to better serve Whittier residents. The Branch annually circulates more than 190,000 items in spite of limitations that will be corrected by the expansion project— principally, lack of space; lack of ADA compliance; and inadequate power outlets and data lines to support the community’s need for access to technology. The City Council has allowed the Foundation to provide donor recognition on wall displays for donation levels beginning at $500, and other types of recognition including naming opportunities for donations at higher amounts. The City of Whittier is proud this year to be celebrating its 125th birthday, marking the “quasquincentennial” of the City. The community has grown from a small town founded in 1887 with citrus and nuts as its major industries to a bustling city of over 85,331, according to the 2010 census. The City is using a celebratory letterhead on all correspondence throughout the year and a variety of events have been planned to commemorate Whittier’s hitting the big 125. UPTOWN UPDATE

BUSINESS SEMINAR

Uptown is off to a great start in 2012! 2011 came to an end with our busiest season of the year, featuring four major events including the Sonata, Grand Illumination, the new Uptown Skating Rink and our largest Christmas Parade ever hosted. As we began our planning for 2012, we looked closely at each of our events in an attempt evaluate their success and if we should once again produce the same events in 2012. Our Board voted to continue with two Antique Faires, the Sonata, the annual Christmas Parade, the Dia de los Muertos celebration, and the weekly Farmers Market in Uptown. As we studied our Car show plans for the year, we determined that the Association would Allan Nakken, conduct only one Car Show in August which will be open to all Executive Director classes of automobiles. In addition, we are also planning to reWhittier Uptown Association introduce our Market Place event which was initially executed on Sunday mornings. We believe this is a viable event but needs to be moved to a new spot and possibly held on a different of the week. Also in the works is a potential Peace Festival that may take place in the late Spring/early Summer. Although our holiday Skating Rink was successful last year, our costs associated with the production of the event were very high. We are actively evaluating some alternative options to once again bring a skating rink and Winter Wonderland to the Uptown area come the holiday season this year. The Whittier Uptown Association Board has determined that this year’s overall mission is to produce local programs that continue to garner our membership’s approval and support. Currently we have supported a Black Friday shopping initiative, as well as a new Shop Uptown campaign, that offers shoppers up to a 20% discount by shopping and dining in the Uptown area. In February, we advertised specifically towards Valentine’s Day in Uptown and will continue with more localized promotions to bring shoppers into our many great shops and restaurants. We have focused our budget towards local support programs not only to market, but to clean up and bring light to our area. Specifically, we voted to increase our sidewalk steam cleaning to 3 to 4 times per year in order to improve the look of our sidewalks. Lighting our streets and sidewalks to provide a safer shopping and dining experience is a primary goal and we will be considering several options to improve these efforts along these lines. We are proud to serve over 470 businesses within the Uptown Association and are actively seeking new Board members. Our election announcements have just gone out and we are awaiting Board member applications. These applications are due back to the Association office no later than March 2nd, 2012. The actual election ballots will be due into the office by March 19th. On March 26th, the official results will be announced to the Board of Directors at the Board meeting that night. We are very proud of our relationship with the Chamber of Commerce and look forward to continuing our work together at offering valuable opportunities to Whittier area businesses in 2012.

FINANCIAL UPDATE Is Increased Inflation on the Horizon? Worries about inflation have been cropping up more frequently lately, largely due to escalating commodity prices, which are pushing up consumer prices, both in the United States and abroad. Although many economists project overall U.S. inflation to remain modest in the near future, most see an uptick down the road. What can you do to help protect your portfolio? Economists and market watchers have been warning investors about Douglas M. Rowan, CFP®, CMFC, AIF® the prospect of increased inflation since the housing bubble burst in 2007. Worries about inflation have been cropping up more frequently lately, largely due to escalating commodity prices, which are pushing up consumer prices, both in the United States and abroad. At the beginning of 2011, the inflation rate stood at a paltry 1.6%. By the end of the year, it had more than doubled to 3.4%.1 With an improving economy and soaring federal deficits, many experts feel that prices in the United States will inevitably pick up their pace even further. Staying Ahead For investors, staying ahead of inflation means choosing investments with return potential to outpace it. Here's a look at how a climbing inflation rate could impact various investment types and asset classes. • Domestic Stocks -- Although past performance is no guarantee of future returns, historically, stocks have provided the best potential for long-term returns that exceed inflation. An analysis of holding periods between 1926 and December 31, 2011, found that the annualized return for a portfolio composed exclusively of stocks in Standard & Poor's Composite Index of 500 Stocks was 9.83% -- well above the average inflation rate of 2.99% for the same period. However, over shorter time periods the results are not as appealing. For the 10 years ended December 31, 2011, the S&P 500 returned an average of only 2.92%, compared with an average inflation rate of 2.50%.3 • International Stocks -- During the same 10-year span that ended December 31, 2011, the MSCI EAFE index, which is composed of established economies such as Germany and Japan, outpaced U.S. inflation with an average return of 5.12%. The MSCI Emerging Markets index, which tracks developing world economies such as Brazil and China, was even more stellar, returning an average of 14.2%.4

• Bonds -- Historically, investors have turned to shorter-term corporate and highyield bonds for protection in rising-rate environments.5 Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS). TIPS are types of fixed-interest rate bonds whose value can rise as inflation rates rise. • CDs and Other Cash Instruments -- The Federal Reserve is still keeping a tight lid on interest rates, forcing investors who hope to keep pace with inflation by investing in cash instruments facing a harsh reality. The rates on a one-year CD are averaging under 1%, while a five-year CD is yielding an average of under 2%, according to Bankrate.com. Money market and other bank savings accounts are also averaging well under 1%.6 Although many economists project overall U.S. inflation to remain modest in the near future, most see an uptick down the road. For investors, a well-rounded portfolio may be your best weapon. The key is to consider your time frame, your anticipated income needs, and how much volatility you are willing to accept. TAX TIPS Miscellaneous Itemized Deductions Miscellaneous expenses may generate a tax benefit for you if you itemize your deductions. However, this will also depend in part on your adjusted gross income (AGI) as well as the total of all your miscellaneous expenses. To determine if these deductions will generate a tax benefit, you will first need to compute the total of all of your expenses that fall into the miscellaneous deduction categories. This amount is deductible as an itemized deduction but only if (and to the extent) it is greater than Richard Scrivanich, 2% of your AGI. Note that since it is an itemized deduction, it can Harvey & Parmelee only be claimed if you itemize your deductions and don't claim the LLP standard deduction. Example. Jerry's AGI is $75,000. His miscellaneous itemized deductions total $2,000. If he itemizes deductions, he can claim a $500 deduction for his miscellaneous items: $2,000 − $1,500 (2% of $75,000). What are miscellaneous itemized deductions? The following are itemized deductions subject, in total, to the 2% rule described above: 1. Tax return preparation costs. This category includes the fee to have your tax return prepared as well as other costs related to determining your taxes, such as appraisal costs or legal fees. 2. Employment-related expenses of an employee other than those reimbursed under an arrangement that meets special requirements. If you incur deductible expenses in connection with your employment, they are miscellaneous deduction items. These include out-of-pocket expenses for which you aren't reimbursed by your employer. They also include expenses for which you are reimbursed or are paid an expense allowance but not under an arrangement that meets specific requirements. You will have to include the reimbursements or allowances in income and then separately deduct the expense as a miscellaneous itemized deduction. (If the arrangement meets the requirements, the reimbursement or allowance isn't included in income and the expense isn't deducted. To meet the requirements the arrangement must require you to give a detailed account of your expenses to your employer and to return any excess allowance amounts you received over the expenses incurred. Please let me know if you would like more information about deducting employment-related expenses.) 3. Investment expenses, and expenses of producing or collecting taxable income. This category includes investment advisor's fees, investment publications, and the cost of a safe deposit box. 4. Hobby expenses. Expenses related to an activity that is a mere “hobby” (i.e., not a trade or business) are only deductible up to the extent of your income from the activity. You are taxed on the income and then only separately deduct the related expenses as miscellaneous itemized deductions. One final caveat: the deduction for miscellaneous itemized deductions isn't allowed for purposes of the alternative minimum tax. NEWS FROM CALCHAMBER California Employers Paying Higher Unemployment Taxes

Hiring Veterans Makes Good Business Sense

Federal Tax Hike Due to $10+ Billion State UI Debt

The California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) is apprising business owners that they may be eligible for thousands of dollars in state and federal tax benefits and other incentives for hiring qualified veterans. California is currently home to 1.9 million veterans. Another 30,000 men and women separate from military service and return to the state every year. With the withdrawal of troops from Iraq and Afghanistan, an additional 6,000–10,000 veterans are expected to return to California by the end of 2012.

Since January 1, California employers have been paying higher taxes because the state has not repaid money it borrowed from the federal government to pay unemployment insurance (UI) benefits. Unless Congress takes action (which it is not expected to do), the higher tax will remain in effect through 2012 and then increase each year the state has an outstanding loan balance. California’s UI Trust Fund has been insolvent since 2009.By the end of 2012, the UI Fund deficit is projected to reach $10.7 billion, according to the California Employment Development Department (EDD). Employers will lose 0.3% of their federal tax credit, partially offset by the end of a 0.2% surcharge in July 2011. The 0.3% tax credit translates into approximately $21 per year for any employee who makes $7,000 or more in 2012. California employers pay UI taxes on the first $7,000 of wages per employee. Statewide, the tax increase totals an estimated $289.8 million in 2012 and $615.7 million in 2013, according to the EDD October 2011 Unemployment Insurance Fund Forecast. This represents a loss of 0.6% of the tax credit in 2012, EDD reports. The additional taxes paid will help offset California’s federal loan balance. Federal Loan Outstanding State laws must meet certain federal requirements for employers to qualify for credits against the tax imposed under the Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA). Due to California’s outstanding loan balances, the U.S. Department of Labor notified the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and EDD late last year that California is a “credit reduction state.” Employers subject to unemployment tax laws of a credit reduction state must pay additional federal unemployment tax when filing a Form 940, according to the IRS website. California has carried an outstanding loan balance since 2009. Therefore, the FUTA credit for California employers decreased from 5.4% to 5.1% on January 1, 2012, a 0.3% credit reduction, according to the EDD website. Employers will use IRS Schedule A (Form 940), Part 2, to calculate the FUTA tax, EDD reports. State UI Fund Insolvent The unemployment rate in California has been consistently higher than the U.S. rate for some time. In December 2011, unemployment in California was 11.1% versus 8.5% for the United States, according to EDD. The December 2011 unemployment rate was a slight drop from the 11.3% EDD reported for November, and an improvement from the 12.5% rate recorded in October 2010. California’s UI Trust Fund has been insolvent since January 2009 due in part to the large numbers of unemployed Californians. Also contributing to the UI fund’s insolvency has been legislation that imposed benefit increases in 2001 without including cost-saving reforms. Tax Benefits and Other Incentives Available The federal Work Opportunity Tax Credit, for example, is based on a percentage, ranging from 25% to 40%, of qualified first-year wages. Maximum eligible credits may be as high as $2,400 for hiring a qualified veteran and up to $9,600 for hiring a veteran with service-connected disabilities. Other state and federal benefits for hiring veterans may include: • • •

State-level hiring credits: $37,000 (over five years) California Enterprise Zone tax credit for employers hiring certain economically challenged employees, including veterans; Training funds, tuition reductions, and military pay exemptions; Federal Mentor-Protégé Program: Allows certain government contractor reimbursements for training/incidental costs associated with training physically challenged veterans.

According to the Corporate Taxation Insider, which offers more detailed information about the tax benefits of hiring veterans, the process for documenting these state and federal tax benefits is fairly straightforward for the certified public accountant or taxpayer. In addition, systems can be set up to allow the employer to pre-screen the employees before they are hired in order to streamline the documentation process and maximize the hiring credit. CalVet also notes that depending on the nature of their service, veterans who separated from military service after 9/11 may be entitled to five years of free health care through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Veteran Employment: National Priority Last year, President Barack Obama signed into law the VOW to Hire Heroes Act, which provides much-needed practical support to veterans transitioning from combat to careers. The President has publicly challenged the private sector to hire 100,000 veterans or spouses by the end of 2013. A soon-to-be-announced White House plan aims at placing thousands of post-9/11 veterans in first responder positions and positions working to restore and protect national parks. The First Lady and the Vice President’s wife, Dr. Jill Biden, are promoting the 100,000 Jobs Mission and the Military Spouse Employment Partnership. WHAT’S COOL IN YOUR SCHOOL Pioneer High School to Begin Rio Hondo College Early College Academy Pioneer High School has been chosen to be the first school in the Whittier Union High School District to participate in Rio Hondo College’s Early College Academy, which will provide students with the opportunity to take free college-level courses and earn college credit while still in high school. “This program will place Pioneer High School at the forefront of college preparation in our District,” said Pioneer High School Principal Monica Oviedo. “This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to get a huge head start on college while challenging themselves academically throughout their high school career.” Through the new program, 35 Pioneer students will take college-level courses at no cost, one per semester, outside of their regular high school class load. Upon completing the program and graduating from high school, students will have18 college credits that they can apply toward a community college Associate of Arts degree or transfer to a four-year California State University or University of California school. “The program presents a wonderful opportunity for motivated high school students to begin to prepare for college and actually earn college credits at no cost to them,” says Vanessa Chavez of Rio Hondo’s Office of Educational Partnerships. Pioneer students wishing to apply to the Early College Academy must have a 2.5 GPA or higher; a C or higher in algebra; a C+ or higher in English; and a good showing on their California Standards Tests (CSTs). They must also submit a letter of recommendation and a personal essay. Once the students are selected, their parents participate in a mandatory orientation. “This program and its opportunities will light some of our students on fire,” says Pioneer High School counselor Yolanda Martinez. “This program isn’t just for Honors students. We want to find those students who are capable, highly motivated, and think they can handle it. They will have a lot of support and we are hoping to see a lot of students apply.” In March, interested students who meet the criteria can attend an Early College Academy assembly at Pioneer in advance of the application process to find out more about the program and how they can apply. The Early College Academy will take place after school at Pioneer High School. Participants will begin the two-year program in the summer before their junior year by taking the college course “Counseling 101: College and Life Success.” Subsequent classes will include the “Art of Mexico,” “Sociology 101,” and “Public Speaking 101.” By the time students finish the Academy, they will have completed most of the core curriculum of an Associate of Arts degree. In addition, by taking the program’s “English Composition” and “Oral Communications” classes, students will have completed two of the “Golden Four” classes that are required for transferring into the CSU and UC systems.

The program is free to students. Pioneer High School will pay for the books and Rio Hondo College will pay for the staff that will include the college instructors as well as a tutor who will run study sessions. Pioneer teachers with the appropriate credentials may have the opportunity to apply to be teachers in the “college” classroom. The Rio Hondo College Early College Academy began in 2009 as a pilot program at El Rancho High School in the El Rancho Unified School District, and then Mountain View High School in the El Monte Unified School District.

State Sen. Ron Calderon Honors WUHSD Superintendent Sandra Thorstenson State Senator Ron Calderon (D-Montebello) recently recognized Whittier Union High School District Superintendent Sandra Thorstenson on the floor of the state Senate for her recent achievement. Calderon recognized Thorstenson for being selected the Association of California School Administrators’ National Superintendent of the Year. Senator Calderon introduced and presented Thorstenson with a state Senate resolution. Thorstenson traveled to Houston, Texas on February 15, where she was honored for her state nomination at the American Association of School Administrators Superintendent of the Year Ceremony and received a special medallion. “I am very honored by Senator Calderon’s recognition,” Thorstenson said after the presentation. “I share this honor with everyone in the Whittier Union family who works so hard each day to provide our students with the very best education and preparation for college and careers. “Our teachers work very hard to improve our students' well-being and ability to achieve,” Thorstenson added. “They have continued their collaborative and dedicated efforts despite the fiscal crisis we have all had to endure. These teachers and staff members never give up on their students. They are heroes." Calderon acknowledged Thorstenson for increasing the level of student achievement a t W h i t t i e r U n i o n ’s f i v e comprehensive high schools and for her efforts to provide quality and equity in education to all students. “This is a proud moment for Sandy and a very proud moment for me, knowing that an educator of her quality is watching over and guiding high school students in the 30th Senate District,” Calderon said.

As a Board member, they are expected to serve up to three 2-year terms and also participate on several different committees. As a public career and technical school, this accreditation means that TCROP classes are recognized by the California State Department of Education. TCROP is pleased to provide its students with a career-technical education that is rigorous and relevant in today’s industries. Additionally, students are taught to demonstrate problem solving, teamwork, and the ability to follow directions, identify appropriate resources for use in the workplace and model positive work ethics and respectful life-long character. Employers in the community can also benefit greatly from the Tri-Cities program by utilizing the opportunity to observe potential employees while they are being trained in their facility, providing a source of trained employees at no cost to the employer, enabling employers to be a part of an exciting educational program and by supporting the community. More than 250 local businesses and industries are participants in this unique training program. Spring classes have begun with a high demand for those in the medical/dental field including: Emergency Medical Technician, Certified Nursing Assistant, Medical Front & Back Office and Dental Assisting. Adults taking these courses find that the fees for these TCROP classes are very low compared to fees for the same course in private schools. Tri-Cities ROP offers a community classroom component for most courses providing an internship opportunity for students to gain on the job training. City, Chamber to Offer Valuable Resource for Whittier Manufacturers The City of Whittier and the Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce have partnered with California Manufacturing Technology Consulting™ (CMTC) to provide assistance to manufacturing businesses in the City through the Small Manufacturers Advantage (SMA) ™ program. The CMTC is a non-profit consulting company that works with small to medium manufacturers in Southern California. With over 25 years of experience, CMTC helps to implement solutions for manufacturing process improvements and general business strategies. The SMA is a federally funded program for manufacturers, job shops and assemblers with $150,000 to $10 million in annual sales. SMA helps businesses reduce costs, boost sales and retain employees. The primary service of the SMA Program is an assessment, followed by six months of business advice and guidance. SMA offers support in the areas of lean manufacturing, quality systems, employee training, strategic planning, sales & marketing, cost analysis practices, teamwork and communications, and much more. An SMA consultant visits the manufacturing facility to collect information, and returns with a written report summarizing the current business situation and tools to assist with a self-improvement plan. The consultant stays in contact as a business advisor, providing ideas, tools and guidance. At the end of the program the business owner is asked to take a customer satisfaction survey. There is no cost to participate in the SMA Program. Over 1,000 manufacturing businesses have benefitted from the SMA Program, and the City of Whittier is currently joining the SMA team on company visits to bring even more economic value and support to manufacturers located in the City. The 15 th Annual No-Name Golf Tournament benefiting kids of all ages with disabilities will be held Tuesday, April 24th, 2012 at Coyote Hills Golf Club in Fullerton (1440 East Bastanchury Road). “A Photograph is Worth a Thousand Hamburgers” Opens at Whittier Art Gallery The new exhibit, presented by the Whittier Art Association’s Photography Group, will run from Wednesday the 29th of February to April 1st. The Photography Show is an eagerly awaited annual event at the Gallery, and the photos range in subject matter from landscapes to rock stars, with just about everything else you can think of in between. Whittier Celebrates 125th Birthday One hundred and twenty-five years is a big deal. In fact, it has it very own word: “Quasquincentennial.” The City of Whittier has lived up to that big word in its 125-year history, growing from a sleepy little town with citrus and nuts as its major industries to a bustling city of 85,331, according to the 2010 census. A variety of events have been planned to commemorate Whittier’s hitting the big 1-2-5. The majority of the events will be held in May, the month of Whittier’s annual birthday, including an especially festive Founders’ Day celebration and a City Hall lobby art exhibit featuring photographs and artwork of Whittier’s history from the collections of the City Hall archives and the Public Library’s Whittier History Room in a display entitled “The History of Whittier – 125 Years.” The City is also planning official celebratory letterhead to be used on City correspondence throughout the year.
