ere at the Whittier Chamber, we see all H kinds of marketing. People love to hand out everything from the generic postcard to bottled water, and plenty of pens, mugs and more. But who’s to say which method is the best, or more importantly, most effective? And who has time to put together fancy promotional pieces for every event? We know that one thing is for sure: businesses that fail to successfully market their services rarely keep their doors open. Here at the office, we spend most of our time promoting your products and/ or services and creating more buzz for your business via positive referrals and connections. However, as busy Chamber professionals, we too recognize the importance of effectively marketing our organization on-the-go and making sure that our message is received by our members and the community as a whole. Here are some quick tips to remind you on how to better market your business effectively and professionally: 1. Make it useful. Sure, everyone needs a wall calendar or a handy letter opener, but not 10. If you’re anything like me, I like to play favorites and usually have one specific item I prefer to use regularly. Don’t get lost in the pile! Some of the best marketing pieces I’ve run into were things I hadn’t seen before or things I could use in my everyday life, not just at the office but at home as well.

Hope you all are having a great summer! This has certainly been one of our busier summers here at the Whittier Chamber! We have so many great things happening, all of which are bringing us into the home stretch of summer and getting us ready for the busy fall season ahead. We successfully completed our first annual Shop Local Showcase held at the Whittwood Town Center last month. This was an achievement beyond our expectations as we had hundreds of table vendors and local residents come to stroll the center and learn about our local businesses, while they enjoyed music, raffle prize giveaways and tasty free food available to all! This will certainly be a continuing annual event for the Chamber and we thank all of our participants! Take a look at this month’s centerfold for photos from the event. It’s now time to prepare for our upcoming Annual Hathaway Golf Classic to be held at Friendly Hills Country Club on Monday, September 10. Sponsorships are coming in, golfers are signing up and the Chamber staff and Hathaway committee are preparing for another spectacular golf event! This is one of our largest and most celebrated events of the year, and now is the time to take advantage of the exceptional marketing benefits available at the tournament. The big golf ball drop is back again and is always a highlight of the afternoon. Not a golfer? Not a problem! Join us for the 19th Hole Mixer beginning at 4 p.m. for networking, awards and dinner! What else is new at the Chamber? For starters, take a look as you read through this month’s Business Focus. It is now bigger, better and in all color! The redesign and other new features are exciting advances in the Chamber’s monthly newspaper which provides the reminder to

our monthly readers to “shop local” by keeping up with all our local businesses and community news. We are always working to grow our business community and this is just another great step in the right direction. Without missing a beat, the Chamber presents the monthly Wake Up Whittier networking breakfast to be held on August 15 hosted by Candlewood Country Club. If that’s not enough, we also have our Tasty Tuesday event this month at The 6740, a local favorite who just celebrated their 15th anniversary in Whittier! We are always looking for ways to support business success and growth, which is why the Chamber recently formed the Whittier Young Professionals Group. This is an opportunity for young professionals between the age of 21 to 40 (or young at heart!) to “connect, influence and inspire!” Come find out what it’s all about or contact the Chamber office for more details on how you or your staff can get involved in this progressive group of young professionals. We are thankful that this summer has been full of so many great opportunities to take advantage of like networking, gaining new leads and enjoying our community. It has also been a time to enjoy the beautiful California weather, our families and friends. I hope you’ve all enjoyed some of the lazy, hazy days of summer and are getting ready to gently roll into the fall season. Until next month... stay cool!

City Of Whittier

UPDATE

MAYOR'S MESSAGE Owen Newcomer

How are you enjoying the beautiful summer weather? The park summer concerts series is an opportunity to get out and enjoy the warm summer evenings. The series runs through August 16 with a U2 Tribute at Parnell Park. Concerts begin at 7 p.m. and instead of cooking dinner, come out and support the local food vendors. Please carpool and don’t forget to bring your lawn chairs and blankets. Visit the city website at www.cityofwhittier.org for the full concert schedule. Last month, the City Council approved a specific plan amendment for the Whittwood Town Center. The amendments will help the Town Center attract new retailers to address the existing vacancies in the food court area and the area east of the Vons market. With the update to the specific plan, the opening of The Habit Burger Grill this month, and the new Chipotle and Panda restaurants that opened a few months back, the Whittwood continues to do very well. The Quad shopping center is also doing well; in fact, their spaces are fully leased! You can expect to see a Yogurtland and a Verizon Wireless store open there in the coming months. Across from the Whittwood Town

Center at the northwest corner of Santa Gertrudes Avenue, Russell Street and Whittier Boulevard, Sprouts is now under construction! Congratulations to Sprouts and the entire development team on moving this project forward. It won’t be long before we are able to stroll the aisles of Sprouts Farmers Market looking for healthy, all-natural and organic groceries. New redevelopment law passed the state legislature in late June. Assembly Bill 1484 supersedes AB X1 26, which attempted to dissolve redevelopment agencies statewide. The city’s oversight board will have to jump through many bureaucratic hoops and audits, but hopefully within the next year we’ll be able to: • Retain property owned by the former redevelopment agency for future development; • Repay loans made by the city to its former redevelopment agency; and • Use pre-2011 bonds for the purposes for which they were sold. Whittier, like many cities across the country, continues to battle graffiti vandalism. This negative social trend has a significant impact on the quality of life for residents and businesses as it causes neighborhoods to look deteriorated and run down. Graffiti also tends to instill fear or cause persons to associate the graffiti with other criminal activity. To help combat graffiti, we use a "graffiti tracker" system where every piece of graffiti is photographed before it is removed and entered into a computer database so it can be used

Unfortunately, we spend over $300,000 per year to combat graffiti – and we’d love to spend these dollars on many other needs in the community. Some recommendations to help reduce the occurrence for being a target of graffiti are: • Illuminate the front of your business; • Add a surveillance camera or two to the front of the business; and • Install graffiti coating to exterior wall surfaces and anti-graffiti film to windows. We urge you to call our graffiti removal hotline at 567-9560 to report graffiti so it can be removed as quickly as possible.

Finally, you may be aware that Greg Nordbak resigned from the City Council for business reasons as of July 11. Registered Whittier voters are invited to apply for the open Council seat soon, as the city charter gives the Council just 60 days to appoint a replacement member. Thank you to Greg for his 18 years of dedicated service to the community—and for his gift of using humor at times to make some business discussions less painful, some policy decisions more productive, and all in all to make the work of the Council a bit more fun. We’ll miss you, Greg.

City Of Whittier

UPDATE

City Council Funds Greenway Trail Fitness Equipment The Whittier Community Foundation presented the City of Whittier with $50,073 at the June City Council meeting to purchase and install outdoor exercise equipment for the Greenway Trail Fitness Project. The Fitness Project is the latest in a series of projects whose fundraising was spearheaded by the Foundation. This amount was supplemented by two grants from the Kaiser Foundation Hospitals; a $7,500 grant also presented at the meeting and a $15,000 grant received previously. In addition to receiving the funds for the project, City Council also awarded the contract for the purchase and installation of the equipment to Fleming Environmental for $72,573. The Foundation is continuing to seek additional corporate sponsorships to further enhance the Greenway Trail Fitness Project. According to Fran Shields, Director of Parks, Recreation and Community Services, the Greenway Trail Fitness Project is a model example of how charitable foundations, the business community and local non-profit groups can work together for the benefit of the City and its residents, an important consideration in these strained financial times. The Foundation conducts fundraising year round through such

activities as the Paws 4 a Cause Dog 3K and Fashion Show, the Spooktacular 5K/Children’s Creepy Crawly Dash and the recently held, highly successful first annual “Dancing with the Whittier Stars,” which netted $30,000 to go toward this Greenway Trail project. “Sheri Bathhurst, Community Benefit Manager at Kaiser Permanente Downey Medical Center, has also been a strong support of health-related efforts in Whittier for many years,” Shields said. “She encouraged City staff to apply to Kaiser for funding to further the Greenway Trail Fitness Project.” “Ms. Bathhurst is also a board member for Activate Whittier, a group composed of various local agencies, including the City, to provide improving the health and wellness of our community, by providing better access to healthy foods and phsyical activity for our residents,” Shields said. The four locations for the equipment are: the Palm Park Trailhead; slightly east of Mar Vista Street near Whittier Boulevard; Lambert Road west of Calmada Avenue; and the corner of Lambert Road and Mills Avenue. This will allow access to the equipment along the entire length of the Trail and it is estimated that the equipment will be installed by the end of the summer.

Police department to host 29th Annual National Night Out On Tuesday, August 7 from 5 to 8 p.m., neighborhoods throughout Whittier are invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the “29th Annual National Night Out” (NNO) crime and drug prevention event. National Night Out, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and co-sponsored locally by the Whittier Police Department, will involve over 10,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. In all, over 34 million people are expected to participate in ‘America’s Night Out Against Crime’ on August 7. National Night Out is designed to: (1) heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; (2) generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime efforts; (3) strengthen neighborhood spirit

and police community partnerships; and (4) send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. On August 7, residents in neighborhoods throughout Whittier and across the nation are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside. All residents are encouraged to join the Whittier Police Department and your neighbors at Michigan Park in Whittier from 5 to 8 p.m. Festivities will include raffles and giveaways, free food & drinks, K9 demonstrations, the Tactical Entry Team, ride-a-longs, LACO Fire Department, a bounce house, rock wall, music and more. For further information, please contact Community Relations Officer Brad White at (562) 567-9208.

$ TAX TIPS SIMPLE Retirement Plans and SIMPLE 401(k) Plans

Richard Scrivanich In addition to Simplified Employee Pensions (SEPs), which was discussed in last month’s Tax Tips article, there are other business retirement plans which are available for you to consider, such as the “SIMPLE” retirement plan: “savings incentive match plan for employees.” This type of plan is targeted at businesses with 100 or fewer employees, and is designed to offer greater income deferral opportunities than individual retirement accounts (IRAs), with fewer restrictions and administrative requirements than traditional pension or profit-sharing plans. Under a SIMPLE plan, any employee with compensation of at least $5,000 must be permitted to enter a “qualified salary reduction arrangement.” Under this arrangement, an employee can elect to have a percentage of compensation not in excess of $11,500 (in 2012) set aside in an IRA, instead of receiving it in cash. This maximum is indexed for inflation each year. Amounts taken out of the employee's salary and contributed to a SIMPLE IRA are not taxed to the employee until

withdrawn from the SIMPLE IRA. Early withdrawals may be subject to a 10% penalty (25%, if the withdrawal is made within the first two years). Under a qualified salary reduction arrangement, the employer must make “matching” contributions to the SIMPLE IRA. That is, the employer must make contributions to an employee's SIMPLE IRA in the same amount that the employer contributed under the employee's salary reduction election, up to 3% of the employee's compensation. For example, if an employee with compensation of $50,000 elects to have 10% of his pay contributed to the plan ($5,000), the employer must contribute an additional $1,500 (3% of $50,000). For these purposes, an employee's compensation is the amount reported on his Form W-2, plus the amount of elective deferrals (e.g., the amount of the salary reduction contributed to the SIMPLE IRA). But the matching contribution for the year cannot exceed $11,500 in 2012. This amount is indexed for inflation each year. If an employer wishes to contribute less than 3%, he can give employees proper notice and drop the contribution to as low as 1% of compensation, as long as this isn't done for more than two years out of the five-year period ending with the year of reduced contributions. Alternatively, instead of making “matching” employee contributions, the employer can simply contribute a flat 2% of “compensation” (limited to $250,000 for 2012, and as adjusted for inflation in following years), for every employee eligible to participate in the plan, whether the employee elects to reduce his salary or not. Special notice must be given to employees if the employer wishes to take this approach. Instead of adopting a simple retirement plan, an employer can set up a SIMPLE 401(k) plan. By making matching contributions (or 2% nonelective contributions) and

WHITTIER BUSINESS FOCUS

satisfying rules similar to those for simple plans, SIMPLE 401(k) plans will be considered to satisfy the otherwise complex nondiscrimination test for 401(k) plans. The contribution rules for SIMPLE plans apply to simple 401(k) plans, except that if an employer adopts the matching contribution approach (instead of the flat 2% option), the maximum contribution percentage cannot be dropped below 3%. Unlike a SIMPLE plan, a SIMPLE 401(k) plan is part of a qualified plan, and is subject to the qualified plan rules. Contributions to SIMPLE 401(k) plans are not subject to the 15 percent limits on contributions to profit-sharing or stock bonus plans. SIMPLE plans have the advantages of simplified reporting requirements and the absence of the qualification rules prohibiting the plan from discriminating against lower-level employees. These advantages come with some obligations, such as the matching contribution

requirement. Additionally, to be eligible to adopt a SIMPLE plan, an employer must not contribute to, or accrue benefits under, any qualified retirement plan for services provided during the year (or in any year after the qualified salary reduction arrangement takes effect). But employers that maintain a plan for collectively bargained employees can maintain a SIMPLE plan for noncollectively bargained employees. A restriction similar to the “exclusive plan requirement” applies to SIMPLE 401(k) plans, but only for services provided by employees eligible to participate in the SIMPLE 401(k) plan. This may by a good time to reassess the retirement planning approach for your business. If you have any questions regarding the above discussed topic or any other tax matter, please feel free to give me a call at (562) 698-9891.

WHAT’S COOL IN YOUR SCHOOL La Serna’s Class of 1967 Awards 4 Melvin E. Locke Honorary Scholarship th

The La Serna High School Class of 1967 was once again proud and honored to award their fourth Melvin E. Locke Honorary Scholarship at the Student Recognition Dinner and Senior Awards Program held at La Serna High School recently. The scholarship honors Melvin E. Locke, La Serna’s first principal, who led the school for 22 years. It was his unparalleled vision and dedication at La Serna that helped lay the foundation for the outstanding school La Serna has always been and remains today. It was also set up to “pay it forward to a qualifying La Serna graduating senior and share the lasting spirit of the great Class of 1967. Stephanie Rogoff was this year’s recipient and the fifth La Serna graduate to receive the scholarship. Stephanie was selected from 27 applicants by the members of the Scholarship Committee for her all-around scholastic abilities, attendance, community involvement, extra curricular activities and her plans to continue her education. Stephanie

will be attending Cypress Community College in the fall of 2012. Melvin Locke was at the dinner to personally congratulate Stephanie on her achievements and present her with a plaque and the Scholarship Award in his honor for $1,000. Also present to see Stephanie receive her award were Stephanie’s mother, stepfather and twin sister, Mrs. Locke and the Class of ’67 Scholarship Committee. Stephanie’s name has also been added to the perpetual Melvin E. Locke Honorary Scholarship plaque, which is proudly displayed in the Principal’s office at La Serna High School. The Class of 1967 would like to encourage all 2013 seniors to pick up an application, which outlines the qualifications to participate in next year’s scholarship award, or email classof1967scholarship@gmail.com. In this picture from L to R: Thoma Page, Maxine Berkowitz, Stephanie Rogoff, Melvin Locke, Bob Taylor, Tom Maxfield, Marsha Lozano and John Carrol, of the Scholarship Committee.

Tri-Cities Regional Occupational Program Offers Fall Classes This fall Tri-Cities ROP will be offering low cost, fee-based courses for adults at both Pioneer High School and the El Rancho Education Center located across the street from El Rancho High School on Passons Blvd. in Pico Rivera. Many TCROP classes prepare students for successful passage of State Board Certification tests, which can translate into a new or better job. All Tri-Cities ROP courses provide a Certificate of Competency listing skills that have been mastered in the class. This certificate is widely recognized by businesses and is a valuable tool for those seeking employment. Adult classes being offered include: Auto Brakes & Wheel Alignment, Digital Printing & Design, Emergency Medical Technician, Medical Assistant Administrative, Medical Assistant Clinical (back office), Nurse Assistant Pre-Certification and Registered Dental Assistant. The top reasons to take TCROP classes are: 1) job training in less than 6 months for most classes; 2) industry recognized certificates from an accredited school; 3) internships at local businesses provide on-the-job training and the unique opportunity to get your foot in the door; 4) employability workshops provide preparation for confidence and success in a job search; 5) classes taught by State of California Credentialed teachers who have extensive experience in their field; and 6) low cost classes.

Adults may register for classes at the recently re-located TCROP offices now at Pioneer High School, 10800 E. Benavon St., Whittier, 90606. The TCROP phone number remains the same at (562) 608-9571 x 200. Patriotic celebrations took place throughout our nation over the Independence Day weekend, and the celebration was especially significant for the city of Whittier since one of its own, Miguel Cosio of Team Warriors MMA Academy, became the Heavyweight Muay Thai Kickboxing Champion of the World. Cosio was preselected to represent the United States of America, in a U.S.A. vs. Mexico Muay Thai Kickboxing Competition held last month. The competition, promoted by the International Kickboxing Association (I.K.B.A.), took place on Saturday, July 7 in Tijuana, Mexico. The bouts were scheduled for five five-minute rounds with the winner titled the new heavy-weight world champion. Miguel Cosio was victorious over Mexico’s competitor by way of knock

out during the first minute of the second round. The win is a hard earned victory for Cosio who, during this time, faced challenges while opening a new location for his community gym while training for the life changing fight. However, bringing home the International Championship belt was well worth the journey for Cosio. The I.K.B.A. Championship belt is on display inside Cosio’s home school, the Team Warriors MMA A c a d e m y, w h i c h i s l o c a t e d a t 16525 Whittier Blvd. in Whittier. In honor of his international victory, Cosio will also be giving private kickboxing lessons, as well as advanced classes. To schedule an appointment with Team Warriors, please call (562) 943-1500.

Whittier Chamber member honored as 60th District Veteran of the Year State Assemblyman Curt Hagman was proud to introduce to the California State Assembly Mr. Chuck Morse as his 60th District Veteran of the Year. Each year the Assembly selects a veteran that resides in the district that has had a distinguished military career or has significantly contributed to the community. Charles Morse served in the US Army (Spc-3) from July, 1954 through September of 1956. He received the European Occupation, Good Conduct and Sharpshooter medals and was a member of the 7888 Special Troops, G-2 Intelligence stationed in Heidelberg, Germany. Since being discharged, Chuck moved from his hometown of San Bernardino to the City of La Habra some fifty years ago. He is the former Executive Director of the La Habra Community Foundation and has been very active both personally and professionally in the community as a member of the LH Host Lions Club, the La Habra Business

Connection and several Chambers of Commerce. Presently he is organizing a committee to bring the traveling Vietnam Wall to La Habra in 2013 and is a member of the American Legion Post 267 in La Habra. One of his proudest accomplishments is the continued news coverage and viewers he receives each Memorial and Veterans Day at his La Habra home for his display of the "Gathering of the Crosses" honoring the men and women from Orange County who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan. This year there were 70 crosses on this front lawn, each containing a short bio and photo of the deceased. Chuck states," I really hope I don't have to make any more.” Assemblyman Hagman stated “Veterans like Chuck have made the sacrifice for each American family. This award is given to him this year, but the honor symbolizes all those that have served, and continue to serve, our great nation.”

Pain In The Neck! The ProAdjuster is the Answer.

PLEASE JOIN US FOR OUR

Luau Mixer

Soreness, tightness, spasms, intense pain – you feel it when you wake up, or perhaps during your workday – rubbing your neck doesn’t seem to help, and you try to cover up the problem with medication hoping that it will eventually go away. Seem familiar? Know that your neck is incredibly engineered. It was created with its own built-in shock absorber called a curve or lordosis. The curve was designed to act like a spring and absorbs the shock of your head resting on your neck. It’s a significant amount of pressure (to hold the head up) over time, and the importance of keeping this curve is imperative to the transmission of “information” from your brain to your nervous system. When your neck loses this curve, ligaments supporting your neck become stretched and lose their ability to maintain a natural curve. This can happen due to a motor vehicle accident, chronic poor posture, or uncorrected vertebral misalignment. Once your neck has lost its normal curve, your neck and shoulders attempt to hold your head in the proper position. Unfortunately, they were not created to do this and they tire easily. This is when your neck becomes overworked and you begin to feel the tightness and muscle fatigue in the neck and shoulder area. Our office has experienced considerable success in resolving neck pain and correcting posture. We utilize the state-of-theart technology, the ProAdjuster, to identify the source of your ailments. In fact, the ProAdjuster’s revolutionary technology has received a patient satisfaction rating of over 92%.

Please Register for our

Pressure Point Therapy Workshop August 20th at 7 p.m.

Why the Pain in Your Neck Drastically Affects Your Health

If you or someone you know is suffering from neck pain, you may want to consider being evaluated with the ProAdjuster. Please contact our office, and we will send you more information about this advanced technology, or you can call our office today to schedule your evaluation. You have nothing to lose but your neck pain! “I have suffered from migraine headaches since I was a child. I learned early on that heat was a trigger for them. I have been receiving ProAdjuster treatments for my neck due to a neck injury. Recently I was working outside in the heat and it suddenly dawned on me that I didn’t have a migraine! Thank you Dr. Yani and Dr. Miyoshi.” – Carmela Calderon, School Nurse
