Couple who never thought they would own home discover The Gables of Whittier

I

t wasn’t long ago that many first time buyers felt like they had been priced out of the new home market and would be forced to rent forever. At least that is what it felt like for Jeff and Kristen Hoffman. Then one day they saw a new home community being built just down the road from where they were renting and decided to go and see the models. The new community was The Gables of Whittier built by one of Southern California’s premiere new home builders, Far West Industries. Featuring a unique collection of urban style condominiums and townhomes with its own community park, the couple thought why not? Much to their surprise, they found a home that they could afford, thanks to receiving a little help from the City of Whittier. “We hadn’t really been looking for a new home, and had been resigned to the fact we could never afford anything in Southern California. We figured we’d be renting for the foreseeable future,” stated Jeff Hoffman. Both Hoffmans work at nearby Biola University, which is now only minutes

away from their new home. Jeff is Director of Athletic Communications and Kristen is a Reference Librarian. With an expanding family of four and their jobs being close by, one of the biggest determining factors in their selection was the location of The Gables and its close proximity to uptown Whittier, nearby shopping centers and the highly rated schools. The Gables offers a modern urban style home setting that caters to families as well as many working professionals that include both doctors from the nearby community hospital and university professors from another nearby college, Loyola University. Looking for more space to grow into, the Hoffmans chose one of the townhome plans known as the TH3, which gave them a beautiful modern multi-level floor plan that features contemporary touches that are not normally found in homes at this affordable price range. With 1,716 square feet of living space, the TH3 features three-bedrooms,

and two and one-half bathrooms, as well as a private patio, a two car garage and, according to the Hoffmans, “the fireplace didn’t hurt either.” Another attractive feature of the TH3 is the kitchen which offers an open airy design that allows the resident chef to be part of the open great room concept in each home. Cooking appointments feature stainless steel Whirlpool appliances including a self cleaning oven, a free standing gas range, a microwave and a dishwasher. Topping it all off are granite slab counter tops, contemporary kitchen cabinetry with the buyer’s choice of finishes and under cabinet architectural lighting, as well as Moen pull-out chrome faucets. Each kitchen also includes either a large island or a u-shaped countertop both with seating for a breakfast bar. The Master suite offers full walkin closets, a private master bath featuring both a designer style oval tub and separate shower, dual sinks with European style cabinetry, Moen designer selected faucets and a compartmentalized water closet. Residents can enjoy living in a well landscaped park-like setting that

features a tot lot and soon, a complete private community park dedicated to residents only. With its great location, The Gables offers the perfect home for those people who work nearby in Whittier, as well as the LA commuter who can take the Metro link not far from The Gables and get to work easily by rail without the worry of traffic. Homeowners can sit back and enjoy the ride on the train while they plan out their day in the morning or wind down on the way home in the evening. The final determination for the Hoffmans was the reputation of the builder and the friendly knowledgeable sales person, Steve Sullivan, who helped make their first home purchase as simple as possible. The Hoffmans added, “Working with Far West has been great. From the start of the

When the big one hits, will you be prepared? Save the life of your business when disaster strikes By Katie Galvin, Director of Public Relations

Recent earthquakes have rocked the Los Angeles area this summer and reminded us that disasters can happen at any moment. This month also marks the 25th anniversary of the 6.1 temblor that shook Whittier to its core and left over 10,000 homes and businesses damaged in the Los Angeles and Orange County areas. As Whittier recovered from the earthquake, many businesses did not. Business owners can suffer a double whammy in the event of a disaster: the owner may have to rebuild a substantially damaged business and at the same time is without revenue to pay employees and cover expenses. According to disaster officials, the first consideration during a disaster is the safety of employees; second is Continued on page 7

Wow, October is already here! As the seasons change, it’s hard to believe that I’ve been a part of the Whittier Chamber for almost 10 years now. It has been, and continues to be, such a tremendous experience both personally and professionally for me. And its events like the Hathaway Golf Classic that keep bringing members, old and new, to our Chamber. This year’s tournament was another huge success and we had a great turn out at what looks to be yet another financially successful event. Congratulations to ALL of the winning foursomes and golfers, and to three of our members who won the $2,000 Helicopter Golf Ball Drop! The proceeds from events like the Hathaway Golf Classic are what make it possible to offer excellent networking events and programs for free or low-cost to our Chamber members. Speaking of great events, here are a few you will want to mark your calendar for. The Orchard Post Acute Care facility in Whittier will host a free open house event and ribbon cutting on Friday, October 5 from 12 noon to 3 p.m. (ribbon cutting at 1 p.m.) and all Whittier Chamber members are encouraged to come out and show their support. Also, if you haven’t purchased your ticket yet for CAPC, Inc.’s Annual Celebrity Waiter Dinner & Dance that same night, make sure to contact the Whittier Chamber to join our table. My husband Steve and I will be there in costume and ready to serve as waiters. CAPC is an amazing organization doing great things in our community and I always look forward to this event and the fun we are sure to have! Remember that 3rd is the word at the Whittier Chamber! The Wake Up Whittier breakfast is always held the 3rd Wednesday of the month and believe me, I meet someone new each time! This month it will be hosted by Family Church Whittier on October 17, where they will be promoting their annual Thanksgiving Fest, yet another wonderful community event giving back to those in need. For those of you between the ages of 21 to 40ish (or young at heart), we’ve got our next Whittier Young Professionals Group luncheon on Friday, October 19 at The Bottle Room. The Bottle Room is such a neat, trendy local hot spot in our very own Uptown district and the perfect venue to host our up and coming young professionals this month. Encourage the YPs in your office to come out and join us! Don’t forget our FREE B.O.S.S. seminar on Thursday, October 25 at its new time of 8:30 to 10 a.m. at the Whittier Central Library. The monthly series always features a different topic and is open to all local business owners. That same night, Renew Massage & Skincare will welcome the Whittier, Santa Fe Springs and Pico Rivera Chambers of Commerce for their Halloween Mixer from 5 to 7 p.m. Don’t be scared to have a good time – the networking is free and fun so make sure you dress to impress in your best costume! Finally, Tasty Tuesday will be held at family favorite Carino’s Italian Grill at the Whittwood Town Center on October 30. The networking lunch is just another great way to get to know local business owners and support not only a fellow member, but a great Whittier restaurant in the process!

The Whittier Association of Apartment Owners has a new look, a new name and a new WHITTIER APARTMENT OWNERS’ R e s o u r c e C o u n c i l mission! This special group, a subcommittee of the Whittier Chamber, is now called the Whittier Apartment Owners’ Resource Council. Its mission is to educate residential property owners and managers in the Whittier area on issues related to residential properties, city activities and available resources. The first meeting will be on Thursday October 18, 2012. All workshops will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Senior Center at 13225 Walnut Street in Whittier (off of Painter between Mar Vista and La Cuarta). Arrive by 6:45 p.m. for complimentary coffee, cookies and the opportunity to network with other property owners and managers! The workshops are FREE for property owners and managers. You must be present to receive any handouts and materials. The dates for the next meetings to put on your calendar now: Thursday, February 21, 2013, Thursday, April 18, 2013, Thursday, June 20, 2013. Topics to be discussed at upcoming meetings include new California and Federal laws, forms – what you need, graffiti, gangs and drugs, property maintenance, code enforcement and property values, how to screen applicants and more! Thank you to Pabst, Kinney & Associates and Virginia (Ginny) Ball of Woodruff Properties for their support of the Whittier Apartment Owners’ Resource Council. Questions? Vote for business on November 6: California Chamber of Commerce releases positions on upcoming statewide ballot measures The California Chamber of Commerce recently released its position on some of the Propositions slated to be part of the November 6th General Election. The Regional Chamber Alliance, comprised of representatives from local area Chambers of Commerce, also took their positions on the upcoming ballot measures during their most recent meeting. While these positions do not necessarily reflect the positions of the Whittier Chamber, local business owners and community

members may note that both the California Chamber and our Regional Chamber Alliance choose their positions based on the effect each proposition will have on business. The Secretary of State website contains more information on these and other pending initiatives, as well as measures in circulation and measures that have qualified for the ballot. For more information, visit www.sos.ca.gov/elections. Be ready for the voting booth – read on and get informed!

Proposition 30

Proposition 33

Temporary Taxes to Fund Education. Guaranteed Local Public Safety Funding. Initiative Constitutional. Increases personal income tax on annual earnings over $250,000 for seven years. Increases sales and use tax by ¼ cent for four years. Allocates temporary tax revenues 89 percent to K-12 schools and 11 percent to community colleges. Bars use of funds for administrative costs, but provides local school governing boards discretion to decide, in open meetings and subject to annual audit, how funds are to be spent. Guarantees funding for public safety services realigned from state to local governments. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local government: Increased state revenues over the next seven fiscal years. Estimates of the revenue increases vary—from $6.8 billion to $9 billion for 201213 and from $5.4 billion to $7.6 billion, on average, in the following five fiscal years, with lesser amounts in 2018-19. These revenues would be available to (1) pay for the state’s school and community college funding requirements, as increased by this measure, and (2) address the state’s budgetary problem by paying for other spending commitments. Limitation on the state’s ability to make changes to the programs and revenues shifted to local governments in 2011, resulting in a more stable fiscal situation for local governments. CalChamber Position - No Position • RCA Position - Oppose

Changes Law to Allow Auto Insurance Companies to Set Prices Based on a Driver’s History of Insurance Coverage. Initiative Statute. Changes current law to permit insurance companies to set prices based on whether the driver previously carried auto insurance with any insurance company. Allows insurance companies to give proportional discounts to drivers with some prior insurance coverage. Will allow insurance companies to increase cost of insurance to drivers who have not maintained continuous coverage. Treats drivers with lapse as continuously covered if lapse is due to military service or loss of employment, or if lapse is less than 90 days. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local government: Probably no significant fiscal effect on state insurance premium tax revenues. CalChamber Position - No Position • RCA Position - Oppose

Proposition 31 State Budget. State and Local Government. Initiative Constitutional Amendment and Statute. Establishes two-year state budget cycle. Prohibits Legislature from creating expenditures of more than $25 million unless offsetting revenues or spending cuts are identified. Permits Governor to cut budget unilaterally during declared fiscal emergencies if Legislature fails to act. Requires performance reviews of all state programs. Requires performance goals in state and local budgets. Requires publication of all bills at least three days prior to legislative vote. Gives counties power to alter state statutes or regulations related to spending unless Legislature or state agency vetoes changes within 60 days. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local government: Decreased state revenues and commensurate increased local revenues, probably in the range of about $200 million annually, beginning in 2013-14. Potential decreased state program costs or increased state revenues resulting from changes in the fiscal authority of the Legislature and Governor. Increased state and local costs of tens of millions of dollars annually to implement new budgeting practices. Over time, these costs would moderate and potentially be offset by savings from improved program efficiencies. CalChamber Position - Support • RCA Position - Oppose

Proposition 32 Prohibits Political Contributions by Payroll Deduction. Prohibitions on Contributions to Candidates. Restricts union political fundraising by prohibiting use of payroll-deducted funds for political purposes. Same use restriction would apply to payroll deductions, if any, by corporations or government contractors. Permits voluntary employee contributions to employer or union committees if authorized yearly, in writing. Prohibits unions and corporations from contributing directly or indirectly to candidates and candidate-controlled committees. Other political expenditures remain unrestricted, including corporate expenditures from available resources not limited by payroll deduction prohibition. Limits government contractor contributions to elected officers or officer-controlled committees. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local government: Increased state implementation and enforcement costs of up to hundreds of thousands of dollars annually, potentially offset in part by revenues from fines. CalChamber Position - No Position • RCA Position - Support

Proposition 37 Genetically Engineered Foods. Mandatory Labeling. Initiative Statute. Requires labeling on raw or processed food offered for sale to consumers if made from plants or animals with genetic material changed in specified ways. Prohibits labeling or advertising such food as “natural.” Exempts foods that are: certified organic; unintentionally produced with genetically engineered material; made from animals fed or injected with genetically engineered material but not genetically engineered themselves; processed with or containing only small amounts of genetically engineered ingredients; administered for treatment of medical conditions; sold for immediate consumption such as in a restaurant; or alcoholic beverages. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local government: Potential increase in state administrative costs of up to one million dollars annually to monitor compliance with the disclosure requirements specified in the measure. Unknown, but potentially significant, costs for the courts, the Attorney General, and district attorneys due to litigation resulting from possible violations to the provisions of this measure. CalChamber Position - Oppose • RCA Position - Oppose

Proposition 38 Tax for Education and Early Childhood Programs. Initiative Statute. Increases personal income tax rates for annual earnings over $7,316 using sliding scale from .4% for lowest individual earners to 2.2% for individuals earning over $2.5 million, ending after twelve years. During first four years, 60% of revenues go to K-12 schools, 30% to repaying state debt, and 10% to early childhood programs. Thereafter, allocates 85% of revenues to K-12 schools, 15% to early childhood programs. Provides K-12 funds on school specific, per-pupil basis, subject to local control, audits, and public input. Prohibits state from directing or using new funds. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local government: Increased state personal income tax revenues beginning in 2013 and ending in 2024. Estimates of the revenue increases vary from $10 billion to $11 billion per fiscal year beginning in 2013-14, tending to increase over time. The 2012-13 revenue increase would be about half this amount. Until the end of 2016-17, 60 percent of revenues would be dedicated to K-12 education and 10 percent would be provided to early care and education programs. These allocations would supplement existing funding for these programs. In 2017-18 and subsequent years, 85 percent would be provided to K-12 education and 15 percent to early care and education. General Fund savings on debt-service costs of about $1.5 billion in 2012-13 and $3 billion in 2013-14, with savings tending to grow thereafter until the end of 2016-17. In 2015-16 and subsequent years with stronger growth in state personal income tax revenues, some of the revenues raised by this measure—several hundred million dollars per year— would be used for debt-service costs, resulting in state savings. CalChamber Position- Oppose • RCA Position- Oppose

Proposition 39 Tax Treatment for Multistate Businesses. Clean Energy and Energy Efficiency Funding. Initiative Statute. Requires multistate businesses to calculate their California income tax liability based on the percentage of their sales in California. Repeals existing law giving multistate businesses an option to choose a tax liability formula that provides favorable tax treatment for businesses with property and payroll outside California. Dedicates $550 million annually for five years from anticipated increase in revenue for the purpose of funding projects that create energy efficiency and clean energy jobs in California. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local government: Approximately $500 million in additional state General Fund revenues in 2012-13 and $1 billion each year thereafter from requiring a single sales factor formula for corporate taxes, with about half of the additional annual revenues from 2013-14 through 2017-18 supporting energy efficiency and alternative energy projects. Increased Proposition 98 minimum funding guarantee for K-14 schools of roughly $225 million annually from 2012-13 through 2017-18 and by roughly $500 million each year thereafter, as a result of additional state General Fund revenues. City Of Whittier

UPDATE

MAYOR'S MESSAGE Owen Newcomer

There is a lot of good news to share this month. First, last month, the City of Whittier and the Open Space Legal Defense Fund reached a settlement and concluded litigation which had been pending for several months concerning the validity of the city’s lease of property located in the Puente Hills to Matrix Oil for anticipated oil production. The project is estimated to produce $7- $8 million in revenues annually to the city and possibly over $50 million per year over a period of 25-30 years. Finding new sources of revenue without imposing taxes on the community is quite an accomplishment for local government these days. On October 25th we will celebrate a project on a site that was vacant for more than twenty years. Mosaic Gardens, a 21-unit affordable family apartment development, will celebrate the completion of construction and welcome new residents. The city is proud to have partnered with LINC Housing on this development project as it represents many successes. The new community, located at the

corner of Philadelphia Street and Pickering Avenue, has done wonders for the gateway into Uptown Whittier. The project is the first residential development under the Uptown Specific Plan and is beautifully designed in a Mediterranean architectural style with three stories over a one-level parking garage. The property’s onsite amenities include a large community room where resident programs and events will take place. The community room will also offer a resident computer lab. Congratulations to LINC for completing this great project in Uptown. More good news on the housing front: sales at The Gables, the 96unit townhome development project on Whittier Boulevard, have been picking up. During the summer months the developer launched a widespread advertising campaign that has produced more sales, reservations and inquiries on the units. The Branch Library expansion project is nearing completion and will open with a community party on Saturday, December 1st. The $5.3 million renovation expanded the library from 9,735 square feet to more than 15,700 square feet. I am confident the community will enjoy the beautiful new space, additional library materials and technology stations, and parents will especially like the new story-telling area in the children’s section! Chamber Membership as a Business Strategy The following excerpts were taken from The Real Value of Joining a Local Chamber of Commerce: A Research Study. The complete document and results can be found on the Chamber’s website at www.whittierchamber.com. Joining the chamber is a good thing to do, but what exactly does an active chamber membership say about your company? Does it tell consumers that your business is reputable, that it cares about its customers, that it is involved in the community, or that it uses good business practices? Advocates of chambers of commerce have long believed that when a company is active in its local chamber, it is doing the right thing not only for the community but for its own success as well. While there is plenty of evidence to show the impact of chambers of commerce on their communities, it is much harder to find data that quantify the impact of belonging to a chamber. The American Chamber of Commerce Executives with support from Small Business Network, Inc., commissioned a study designed to do just that: determine the real value to companies in terms of consumer outcomes of joining and being active in their local chamber of commerce. Data from the study shows statistically, joining a chamber is an effective way to convey to consumers that your company uses good business practices, is involved in the community, cares about customers, and is reputable. • 59% of consumers think that being active in the local chamber of commerce is an effective business strategy overall. • Consumers say that being active in the local chamber is 29% more effective for communicating that a company uses good business practices than it is for making

Do consumers really support businesses because they are chamber members? The answer is YES!

a general statement about the company. When consumers know that a restaurant franchise is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 40% more likely to eat at the franchise in the next few months. When consumers know that an insurance company is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 43% more likely to consider buying insurance from it. When consumers know that a small business is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 44% more likely to think favorably of it and 63% more likely to purchase goods or services from the company in the future.

Joining the Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce is good for the community and, as the data shows, it is good for your business! OCTOBER 2012

$ TAX TIPS Charitable Donations of Appreciated Stock

Richard Scrivanich If you are planning to make a relatively substantial contribution to a charity, college, etc., you should consider donating appreciated stock from your investment portfolio instead of cash. Your tax benefits from the donation can be increased and the organization will be just as happy to receive the stock. This tax planning tool is derived from the general rule that the deduction for a donation of property to charity is equal to the fair market value of the donated property. Where the donated property is “gain” property, the donor does not have to recognize the gain on the donated property. These rules allow for the “doubling up,” so to speak, of tax benefits: a charitable deduction, plus avoiding tax on the appreciation in value of the donated property. Example: Tim and Tina are twins, each of whom attended Yalvard University. Each plans to donate $10,000 to the school. Each also owns

$10,000 worth of stock in ABC, Inc. which he or she bought for just $2,000 several years ago. Tim sells his stock and donates the $10,000 cash. He gets a $10,000 charitable deduction, but must report his $8,000 capital gain on the stock. Tina donates the stock directly to the school. She gets the same $10,000 charitable deduction and avoids any tax on the capital gain. The school is just as happy to receive the stock, which it can immediately sell for its $10,000 value in any case. Caution: While this plan works for Tina in the above example, it will not work if the stock has not been held for more than a year. It would be treated as “ordinary income property” for these purposes and the charitable deduction would be limited to the stock's $2,000 cost. If the property is other ordinary income property, e.g., inventory, similar limitations apply. Limitations may also apply to donations of long-term capital gain property that is tangible (not stock), and personal (not realty). Finally, depending on the amounts involved and the rest of your tax picture for the year, taking advantage of these tax benefits may trigger alternative minimum tax concerns. If you have any questions regarding the above discussed topic or any other tax matter, please feel free to give me a call at (562) 698-9891. Richard Scrivanich, Partner For Harvey & Parmelee LLP

OCTOBER 2012 When the big one hits Continued from page 1 the protection of business records and inventory. To handle these concerns, disaster preparedness should be a normal part of business planning. The Great California ShakeOut is an annual earthquake drill scheduled for 10:18 a.m. on October 18, which means that wherever you are at that moment—at home, at work, at school, anywhere—you should drop, cover and hold on as if there were a major earthquake occurring at that very moment, and stay in this position for at least 60 seconds. Note that methods like standing in a doorway, running outside and the “triangle of life” are considered dangerous and are not recommended. Participating is a great way for your family or organization to be prepared to survive and recover quickly from big earthquakes. Businesses, organizations, schools and government agencies are encouraged to register and have their employees practice drop, cover and hold on or have a more extensive emergency drill. Available on the www. shakeout.org website is a Drill Manual for Businesses with a complete list of things to do before, during and after an emergency. Sign up for free at www. shakeout.org/california/register to be counted in the ShakeOut Drill, get email updates and more. In the meantime, here are a few ways you can start preparing for an emergency at the office: PERSONNEL TIPS: • Have an evacuation plan that allows everyone to leave the workplace quickly • Have a plan for sheltering in place should the event require it • Maintain two-way communications with employees before, during and after a disaster • Establish a means of contacting employees who have been displaced from their homes by the disaster • Make arrangements for staff to be able to contact the business if it is

WWW.WHITTIERCHAMBER.COM forced from its normal location • Maintain a list of key telephone and fax numbers (employees, customers, vendors, bankers, attorneys, insurance agents, professional recovery services, equipment rentals and emergency agencies) OPERATIONS TIPS: • Become acquainted with the risks for the business in its location (e.g., flood, fire, tornado, etc.) and plan accordingly • Identify operations critical to the company’s survival and recovery • Decide which personnel and what records, procedures and equipment are necessary to keep the business operating • Preserve vital business records, financial data, accounting records, personnel information, marketing strategies, insurance records, inventory information, etc. • Back up computerized records daily and store the backups, along with other vital records, off-site at least 500 miles away • Plan how to continue operating if the building, plant or store is not accessible • Prepare for lengthy power interruptions during and after a disaster. Arrange for alternate power • Conduct an insurance check annually to assure coverage meets the specific risks at the business site, to be sure both the building and its contents are covered and to protect against business interruptions Remember to dial 911 in the case of any life-threatening emergency! Extensive information on business preparedness and free sample emergency plans, business preparedness checklists and more are available by calling (800) BE-READY (237-3239). Preparedness information can also be downloaded at www.ready.gov/ business and at www.sba.gov/services/ disasterassistance.

WHAT’S COOL IN YOUR SCHOOL Whittier Union students improving performance on STAR tests Whittier Union High School students continue to steadily improve their academic performance, with a larger proportion scoring proficient or higher on the 2012 Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program exams in English–language arts and mathematics, according to data from the California Department of Education (CDE). Each year, more WUHSD students are scoring proficient or advanced on both the English-language arts and math California Standards Tests (CSTs). In 2012, 50% of Whittier Union’s students scored proficient or higher on the English-language arts test, up from 32% in 2006. In math, 36% of Whittier Union’ students scored proficient or higher, up from 15 percent in 2006. When looking at 2012 CST results for grades 9-11, Whittier Union students’ performance continues to surpass that of high school students in most neighboring public high schools, data show. In addition to the continual annual gains in proficiency, more Whittier Union students are not only taking more advanced math courses, but they are scoring proficient or higher on the related tests, with 46% scoring proficient or higher in Algebra II and

54% scoring proficient or higher in Summative Math, the exam given to students in Calculus or AP Probability and Statistics. This data is based on the CSTs taken by students who have been enrolled at Whittier Union since October 2011, whose scores are used to calculate the district’s state Academic Performance Index and federal Annual Yearly Progress. “It is very encouraging to see that a greater percentage of our students are scoring proficient or higher on STAR tests, demonstrating that they are mastering the standards,” said Sandra Thorstenson, Superintendent of the Whittier Union High School District. “We are working diligently to ensure that all of our students continue to improve their academic skills in all subject areas.” Thorstenson and school officials attribute students’ growing academic improvement to the district’s Whatever It Takes initiative, which led to the creation of Professional Learning Communities (PLC’s). Through PLC’s, teachers are deepening their efforts to frequently collaborate, using common assessments to develop and share the most effective teaching strategies on a department, school and district-wide level. This work is paid for by federal

categorical dollars that are required to be spent on professional development, Thorstenson noted. “We believe that our staff development programs enable our teachers to realize significant improvement in student achievement across multiple measures,” Thorstenson said. In addition to rising levels of proficiency on CSTs, nearly 100 percent of all Whittier Union seniors meet the California High School State Exit Exam (CAHSEE) requirement. More than 93 percent of the 13,000 students from the district’s five comprehensive high

schools are graduating. Also, 52% of seniors are completing all courses required for entrance into four-year universities and 95% of seniors enroll in post-secondary education. As a result of higher test scores, Whittier Union’s Academic Performance Index also has climbed steadily over the years and is nearing the state benchmark of 800. “Our students’ progress is directly related to the efforts of our exemplary Board of Trustees, teachers and staff that do “whatever it takes” to improve every facet of our students’ education,” Thorstenson said.

Wendy Brandt chosen as WUHSD Teacher of the Year Wendy Brandt is a teacher’s teacher. Described by her colleagues as a gifted and humble leader who has supported teachers for more than 20 years in her various roles as a mentor teacher, consulting teacher and New Teacher Program Specialist Brandt was recently selected the Whittier Union High School District’s Teacher of the Year for 2012-13. “Without a doubt, Wendy’s impact on new and veteran teachers throughout her career has been exceptional, and thus, in an indirect manner, she has positively impacted many students beyond those in her classroom,” said Whittier Union High School District Superintendent Sandra Thorstenson. As the district’s New Teacher Program Specialist, Brandt facilitates the professional growth of the district’s new teachers and has been instrumental in welcoming teachers into the district. With her help, the district created a special teacher training program called Teacher Power that has assisted teachers for two decades. She is also a part-time teacher at Santa Fe High School, teaching physical education and guided studies. “I’m really very humbled and overwhelmed by this award,” Brandt said. “My teaching and mentoring assignments afford me the best of both worlds – I am a teacher of students and a teacher of teachers. With an open mind, patience, and a good sense of humor, I am blessed to serve as a teacher and support my students and fellow colleagues,” Brandt added. Brandt is often sought out by district and school administrators, as well as teachers, for her wisdom and insight into teaching, as well as her extraordinary human spirit, Thorstenson said. “Wendy Brandt is, both formally and informally, a mentor for so many and I count myself among those fortunate to be influenced by her,” Thorstenson said. “Wendy is a highly deserving recipient of the Teacher of the Year award for her selfless leadership and inspiration.”

Whittier Union teachers say Brandt builds trusting relationship with teachers and is able to effectively guide them to establish and reach their goals for their classroom teaching. “ We n d y k e e p s h e r eyes focused on her new teachers and what they need to accomplish, but also lends a helping hand in any way she can,” said David Chavez, a biology teacher at Santa Fe High School. “She stresses professional improvement and expects high-quality work yet does so while providing support and a sense of humor when needed.” Michele Jones counts Brandt as her first mentor. Jones has worked with Brandt for 15 years and is a district new teacher advisor, instructional coach and Chair of the Social Sciences Department at Santa Fe High School. She said watching Brandt work with new teachers inspired her to become a new teacher advisor herself. Brandt has played a vital role in the professional development of countless educators not only in the Whittier Union High School District, but also across Los Angeles County, Jones said. During the last few years, Brandt has served an important role as a focus team member for the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment Program (BTSA). She has been instrumental in editing and improving the BTSA induction process and often trains teachers in other districts as a part of her work for LACOE. Whittier Union stands as a constant reference for other school districts within the LACOE consortium because of Brandt’s leadership, input and demonstration of Whittier Union’s successes, Jones said. “Wendy has a vision for creating, organizing and simplifying processes that makes the lives of new teachers so much easier,” Jones said. “When you’re looking at the giant mountain called your first year of teaching, Wendy gives you the resources you need to make it to the top.”

WHITTIER BUSINESS FOCUS

Living in Pain? The ProAdjuster is the Answer. Pain is your body’s way of telling you that something is wrong. It’s a warning sign. Millions of people experience pain at some point in their daily life; unfortunately, some even start and end their day in pain.

During Whittier Weekend 2012, Whittier College will celebrate its 125th Anniversary and salute its proud history, bright future, and legacy of not only training students for success, but actively seeking to define leadership in every way possible.

There are two types of pain: acute and chronic. Acute pain can be mild or severe and may be caused by a broken bone, bruise, sprain or even a cut. Chronic pain is different. It can last for six months or more and may be accompanied by exhaustion, insomnia or weight changes. It occurs when the acute problem is not resolved properly.

We hope you’ll join us on October 25-28 as we celebrate and honor faculty, students, alumni, families, and friends of the College at our annual Homecoming—Whittier Weekend!

Whatever type the pain, some people resort to painkillers to alleviate symptoms. On the surface, there is nothing wrong with getting rid of the pain. No one wants to live in pain or discomfort. However, taking medication to reduce the intensity of the pain often only masks the causes of the problem. Ask yourself, wouldn’t it be better to find the true cause and treat it correctly? Of course it would.

PRE-WHITTIER WEEKEND PROGRAM Tues-Thurs, Los Angeles Arts Immersion Mini-Course Oct. 23-25 Become a student again and join Dr. Jennifer S. Holmes for a unique look at the arts and culture of Los Angeles. Course includes morning lecture followed by planned excursions which may include a museum visit, a live performance, a trip to the Huntington Library and Gardens, and/or a Los Angeles mural tour. Program Fee of $750 includes lectures, transportation and tickets/entry-fees for excursions, and group meals (dinner on Tuesday and Wednesday, and lunch on Thursday). Enrollment is limited, so register early! For more information contact Catherine Weir at cweir@whittier.edu.

Why You Don’t Have To Accept Pain as a Part of Your Life

If you or someone you know is suffering from pain, you may want to consider being evaluated with the ProAdjuster. Please contact our office, and we will send you more information about this advanced technology, or you can call our office today to schedule your evaluation. You have nothing to lose but your pain! “Before Chiropractic treatments I was unable to lift or stretch my right leg due to severe pain in my sciatic nerve. Now after 3 weeks of care I feel greater mobility and I can do it without any pain. I was even able to mow my lawn front and back. I definitely feel improved.” – Robert Martinez

Shelter’s Right Hand, the auxiliary to the Women’s and Children’s Crisis Shelter had a record year. Their 16th Annual “Stepping Out Against Domestic Violence” 5K Fitness Walk, held in April, was the biggest turnout in Walk history with over 600 walkers and 125 volunteers participating in the event. Whittier-area businesses and walk participants raised $54,500 in support of the Women’s and Children’s Crisis Shelter (WCCS), making this year’s event the most successful ever! The 2013 date has already been set for Saturday, April 27. The Shelter’s Right Hand totally volunteer-managed thrift shop, Sacks on the Boulevard, celebrated its 30th birthday this year. At their annual meeting in June, Treasurer Elaine Hansen reported that, with the 5K Walk proceeds, thrift shop sales, and membership donations, the Shelter’s Right Hand gave the Women’s and Children’s Crisis Shelter a record total of $100,500 in 2012. Also at the annual meeting, Stephanie Miller was installed as the Shelter’s Right Hand president for 2012-2013.

People helping people in our own community… and you have a chance to help! Have you ever thought, “I’d really like to help other people, less fortunate than myself, around the holidays but I am not sure how?” Canning Hunger, a local non-profit organization that helps to feed hungry kids and their families in our local cities, will be giving every member of the Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce an opportunity to help our community through “Box of Love,” a Thanksgiving and holiday feeding project that is a complete holiday meal wrapped up in a cardboard box—and it’s so simple! At the October Wake Up Whittier being held on October 17 at Family Church, boxes, menu cards, and instructions will be available for every organization to take and fill with the food from the menu. Simply return the box the November Wake Up Whittier being held on November 21 at PIH. It’s a great opportunity to share with the kids or grandkids, or to get the school, church, sport team, or scout troop involved. All of the food will be kept in our local communities and distributed to organizations that belong to the Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce, such as The Whole Child, the Interfaith Food Center, Boys and Girls Club of Whittier, and more. Be sure to pick up your “Box of Love” boxes and enjoy a simple and rewarding way of helping someone this holiday season. For questions: contact Victoria Himes at (714) 785-5070.

OCTOBER 2012

NETWORKING QUOTE Although it makes sense to join the Chamber of Commerce in the city where your business is located, I decided to Manny La Fosse, visit multiple Chambers over a period of several Reverse Mortgage months before making my decision. If the Chamber in my city was not on par with my Consultant goals, I was not about to join. In seeking out the best Chamber of Commerce, I wanted the “WOW” factor to hit me over the head, and the Whittier Chamber of Commerce did just that. I joined for the following reasons: 1) I was simply blown away by the way the staff and fellow members went out of their way to make me feel that the success of my business was important to them. 2) I was welcomed with open arms; I felt immediately part of the team. 3) The Wake Up Whittier networking breakfasts are out of this world; the timing and planning are always done in an organized fashion. Even though I know there is a lot of hard work that goes on behind the scenes, the Chamber staff is always smiling and making it look easy while making you, the Chamber member, look good. I thoroughly look forward to not just sitting and eating, but meeting and greeting so many great folks who are behind me 100%.
