Whittier is a small town with a vision to make things happen, a vision that includes bringing jobs and economic development to the city, to work collaboratively with partners like the Chamber of Commerce, educational institutions, ROP, Whittier Uptown Association, SASSFA and more, and a vision to listen to businesses and assist them during tough times. Whittier might be small, but its dedication to the business community and its residents is proof that big things can happen in a small town. The City’s efforts were recognized recently by the Los Angeles County
Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) when they announced Whittier as the winner of its Most BusinessFriendly City in Los Angeles County in the population 60,000 and over category. Inaugurated in 1996, the Eddy Awards® gala has become one of the most important economic development award programs in the state of California, and is attended by more than 600 of the region’s business, government and education leaders. In 2006, the LAEDC created the Most Business-Friendly City in Los Angeles County award category to recognize cities within the County that are proactively promoting businessfriendly programs and services in the interest of attracting and retaining good quality jobs for their residents. “We are delighted to recognize the city of Whittier with this year’s Eddy Award®,” said Bill Allen, LAEDC President and CEO. “Whittier stands out as a model community in Los Angeles County by proactively engaging and working with businesses and the private sector to create jobs for their residents. Each year, this competition reveals that more and more cities in the County are proactively implementing strategies that are in alignment with L.A. County’s first-ever Strategic Plan for Economic Development that will ensure a strong, diverse and sustainable economy for L.A. County.” The winners were selected based on the following criteria: • Demonstrated commitment to economic development as a priority • Excellence in programs and services designed to facilitate business entry, expansion, and retention
Economic development activity over the past three years • Competitive business tax rates and fee structures • Availability of economic incentives • Effective communication with and about business clients Upon receiving the award, Whittier Mayor Owen Newcomer said, “Our businesses are important to us and we appreciate that they have chosen to invest in Whittier. We want to help them continue to be successful, and we continually seek new ways to assist them. At the end of the day, their success is everyone’s success – the businesses, community and City alike. Winning the Most Business-Friendly City Award is a fantastic recognition of our efforts to help our business community.” “We are proud of our partnership with the City and we thank the City Council for providing the leadership and vision for the development of our business community,” said Whittier Chamber of Commerce President Sue Dean. “We look forward to continuing our work together in finding new and innovative ways to attract, retain and assist businesses in our area,” she explained.
Whittier’s business visitation program, quarterly economic development newsletter “Buy Whittier” purchasing policy and Guide to Doing Business in Whittier assist entrepreneurs start up and maintain successful businesses in the City. The City’s ombudsperson serves as a facilitator for businesses navigating the City licensing and permitting procedures. The City’s many business incentives and special zones are used to attract, retain and expand businesses and jobs. To help Whittier businesses during the recession, the City developed the highly successful Local Economic Stimulus and Business Assistance Plan, which offered reduced fees and fee subsidies. Its business outreach and visitation plan with partners including the LAEDC, SASSFA WorkSource Center and California Manufacturing Technology Consulting aims to collaborate in assessing business needs and providing assistance on a broader scale. The City’s fi lm friendly ordinance makes filming easy, resulting in commercials, made-for-cable movies and major motion pictures, such as Disturbia and the Back to the Future Trilogy filmed in the city. Whittier’s philosophy of “A safe business community leads to a prosperous “Whittier stands business community” is realized through out as a model its highly successful Community Based community in Los Angeles Policing Program, a partnership County by proactively between the Police Department, city engaging and working with residents and businesses. EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
Hoping you all enjoyed a very warm and comforting Thanksgiving with your friends and family! As we move into the joyous Christmas season, which is most definitely in full swing, I am reminded that giving and sharing is really what the season is all about. I try to remember to add a few extra smiles and hellos as we hustle and bustle about in our busy lives this month. Keep in mind that our great community of Whittier has all the fixins needed to tackle your Christmas list… help keep our community thriving by remembering to Shop Whittier! We have an abundance of large stores and small boutique shops for all shapes, sizes and tastes. Our very own City of Wittier also has something else to celebrate during the holidays as they were recently named the “Most Business Friendly City!” This is quite an honor, and well deserved. City Council and staff, in partnership with the Chamber, SASSFA, the Whittier Uptown Association, and the many others who work together to make this such a great place to live, work and shop have earned this award collectively, and we at the Whittier Chamber congratulate them! Although the Chamber slows down a bit this month in preparation for another busy year ahead, there are still a few great networking events coming up for those of us who are trying to squeeze in some last minute business networking during the holiday season. There will be a New Member Orientation held at the Whittier Chamber office (8158 Painter Ave.) on Wednesday, December 5 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. which serves as a great introduction or refresher course on all things Chamber. The event is free so don’t hesitate to bring a fellow business associate or a prospective member who might be thinking about joining come the New Year. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about the Chamber and how to get involved. There will also be a special Holiday Lunchtime Mixer taking place at Famous Joe’s Legendary Mexican Food (15334 Whittier Blvd. Ste. 5) on Thursday, December 13 at 11:30 a.m. and all are invited to attend! The lunch is $10 and the mixer will be a great chance to mix ’n mingle before you’re off for vacation. Support another wonderful local restaurant and maybe gain some leads while you’re at it! As this year quickly comes to a close, there is much to enjoy, celebrate and take pride in. I want to thank each and every one of you for your continued support of the Whittier Chamber over the past year and we are looking forward to another great year ahead. I wish you all a most blessed Christmas and a prosperous and Happy New Year!

City Of Whittier
UPDATE
MAYOR'S MESSAGE Owen Newcomer
What a year! We started January off with the debilitating loss of redevelopment but wow, have we come a long way! As we close out the year, here are some fantastic reasons to celebrate. First, congratulations to the Whittier Public Library on the grand opening of an expanded and updated Whittwood Branch Library! The community is invited to celebrate with us on Saturday, December 1, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The branch library has been expanded from 9,735 to 15,733 square feet and offers a self-checkout, more space for books, more programming for children and adults, and a beautiful high-tech meeting room for community events. Additionally, the Whittier Public Library Foundation’s Enhance the Branch campaign raised almost $500,000 for two study/tutoring rooms, a mural depicting the early history of Whittier, extra computers, a large (artificial) orange tree for the children’s room, furnishings for the community room and more. Whittier has been recognized by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation as the Most Business Friendly City in LA County! We compete against LA County cities with more than 60,000 people. This was the fourth year in a row that we were selected as a finalist and it feels great to finally win, especially because we are placed in the same category as cities such as Pasadena, Torrance, Glendale, Long Beach, and Burbank! In these economic times, we try to do everything we can to encourage businesses to
open and operate successfully in Whittier. Thank you to our business, workforce and educational partners that help us create a business friendly environment throughout Whittier. Other successes this year include the completion of Mosaic Gardens in Uptown, a beautifully designed 21-unit multi-family complex in the gateway to Uptown; the opening of Panda Express, Chipotle and The Habit at the Whittwood Town Center; a new Yogurtland at The Quad; and several new restaurants in Uptown such as Barilla’s Ristorante Terzo, Stuie’s Brooklyn Bakery and Jewish Deli, JB’s BBQ, and we can’t forget Ciao Italia who expanded from a small panini deli on Painter Avenue to a full-size restaurant and lounge on Philadelphia Street. Congratulations to all the new businesses in Whittier—we wish you much success! The Whittier Uptown Association’s annual December events are planned to help get you in the spirit of the holidays (and shopping, of course!). On Saturday, December 1, bring the family to Uptown Whittier for some old fashioned hospitality that will include carolers and horse drawn carriage rides throughout Uptown at the Holiday Sonata from 5 to 9 p.m. While strolling through Uptown, be sure to visit the merchant open houses for special holiday treats. Don’t forget to join the City Council and over 30,000 of your friends and neighbors at the 59th Annual Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 8 from 10 a.m. to noon. This year’s theme is “The Wonder of Christmas,” which is sure to delight the entire family! For more information on the holiday events planned in Uptown, call the Whittier Uptown Association at (562) 696-2662. As you shop this holiday season, I want to remind you that where you buy gas, groceries and gifts DOES make a difference. So, this holiday season, shop Whittier first! Happy shopping and season’s greetings!
YMCA to host 33 rd annual Christmas Prayer Breakfast Join the Whittier YMCA as they joyfully ring in the Christmas season with breakfast and a morning of fellowship, scripture reading and an inspirational “message of the season” by guest speaker Gregg Harris, International Director of Thru The Bible Radio Network. Gregg is a southern California resident having spent 20 years in the missionary broadcasting field. After graduating from Bethel Seminary of the East with a Masters of Divinity degree, he joined Trans World Radio. He also served as a Pastor at Saddleback Valley Community Church and later moved on to Far East Broadcasting Company as President. During his tenure he also served as Chairman of FEBC’s International Council, with more than 20 member countries. Gregg joined Thru The Bible (TTB) in 2011. He is author of the daily devotional book entitled “Step by Step: 31 Days to a Deeper Walk with God.” The Christmas Prayer Breakfast will be held Friday, December 7 at 7 a.m. at the Radisson Hotel in Whittier, 7320 Greenleaf Avenue. The cost is $20 per person; $160 for table of 8. For reservations, please contact the YMCA of Greater Whittier at (562) 907-2727. Deadline is December 3. Unwrapped toys/ books for the Salvation Army are also welcomed.
Uptown Whittier kicks off holiday season with annual sonata, parade The holidays are here and the Whittier Uptown Association is once again hosting the Uptown Whittier Holiday Extravaganza. The Holiday Sonata kicks off the celebrations starting on Saturday, December 1 from 5 to 9 p.m. This event brings holiday cheer as Uptown businesses open their doors to greet our local community with warm, old-fashioned hospitality. Family and friends will experience the holiday season in Uptown Whittier with horsedrawn carriage rides along the treelined streets of Uptown, enjoy taking pictures with Santa, old-fashioned Christmas caroling, entertainment and plenty of shopping and dining. “The Wonder of Christmas” theme continues on Saturday, December 8 with the 59th Annual Whittier Christmas Parade which is slated to be the biggest event of the year and will include over 120 parade participants. The Whittier Uptown Association is proud to announce that Mr. Hubert Perry will serve as Grand Marshal. Perry, known by many as the Founder of P.I.H. Health, along with several others, worked diligently in the 1950’s raising funds to start what was then Presbyterian Hospital.
Parade announcers will be Joe Corey and Samantha Ridout, both community standouts, who are looking forward to welcoming all to the event. The parade will feature marching bands, equestrian groups, floats, vintage automobiles, clowns, dancers, local dignitaries, Miss Uptown 2012-2013 and Santa Claus. This year’s band judging will be organized by The Southern California Band Orchestra Association. The parade floats will also be judged by volunteers and selected Uptown business owners. In years past, the parade has attracted an estimated 30,000 supporters with each year growing larger in attendance. The audience is comprised of residents from the surrounding cities of Whittier, La Habra, Montebello, Pico Rivera, El Monte, La Puente, La Mirada, Downey and more. The Whittier Uptown Association would like to wish the greater Whittier community a happy and safe holiday season! Applications for parade entries and sponsorships are still being accepted. For more information on how you can participate or volunteer for these events, visit www.whittieruptown.org or call the Whittier Uptown Association Office at (562) 696-2662.
Foundation’s “Fit for Life” Spooktacular 5K Run/Walk huge success The third annual “Fit for Life” Spooktacular 5 K R u n / Wa l k a n d “Children’s Creepy Crawly” Half-Mile Dash, held late in October, was a major success, according to Whittier Community Foundation officials. The event featured a Halloween theme, as runners circled from the Whittier Community Center through the quaint Uptown business district and picturesque historic residential area. Many runners, especially the children, dressed in their best Halloween attire to add to the ambiance of the event. Approximately 850 runners participated in the event, mostly from Whittier and surrounding communities, but others came from further afield, including one dedicated runner from Minnesota. Cash prizes were awarded to the winning man and woman. This year’s winners were Anthony Solis, who ran a blistering 15:27, and Kendall Bruton clocking in at an impressive 18:55. The Whittier Host Lions Club donated $1,000 to sponsor the Costume Contest and provide prizes for the youngsters 12 years and younger. “The Creepy Crawly Half-Mile Dash was again a huge success,” said Chris George, Community Foundation President. “Accompanied by the original sound track and escorted
by Whittier Police, superhero Batman led the charge and paced the children in the race which was definitely cool to see.” “People had a lot of fun with their costumes,” George continued. “Waldo was on hand to run the race, but nobody knew where he was. We even saw four run-away brides charging down the course. We didn’t see any grooms around, but boy were they fast!” Proceeds from the event benefit the Whittier Community Foundation, and over the past three years, the 5K has raised approximately $33,000 for the Foundation. “Fit for Life 5K” is a committee of the Whittier Community Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to providing support for programs that benefit the Whittier community, fundraising year around to achieve this goal. This year, PIH Health also partnered in the event as a major corporate sponsor. Dedicated runners may mark their calendars for the 2013 Spooktacular 5K and Creepy Crawly Half-Mile Dash scheduled for Saturday, October 26. Those interested in participating in the event or looking for more information can contact Greg Alaniz, Community Services Supervisor, at (562) 567-9400 or by email at galaniz@cityofwhittier.org.

UPDATE
Look your best with Simply Susie’s Boutique Whittier Chamber: How long have you been in business? I opened Simply Susie’s Boutique in March 2002 while still maintaining a full-time job. After two years, I took a leap of faith and quit the full-time job to dedicate myself solely to the business. To my surprise, it has been ten years since that day and I have yet to look back. I love what I do and all of the beautiful women I meet along the way! Whittier Chamber: We heard you recently helped one of our favorite ladies in town, Sandy Vinatieri (wife of City Councilman Joe Vinatieri) with a very special purchase… Well I’ve know Sandy for a while now and she has been into my store many times before. But she came in this time looking for a very special dress for her daughter’s wedding which took place in October. I told her I was on a mission and that I would work hard to find her the perfect dress! A few days later I called to let her know that I had brought in a few dresses for her to try on. When she came in with her daughter, they were both pleasantly surprised. The first dress was actually the one I knew was going to look the best. It was
a beautifully beaded two-piece plum dress and, although it was a little big, we were able to have it altered for her right away. She was very happy with her choice and I was elated to know that I was able to find the perfect dress for their very special day. When I saw how happy she was, I think it made me even happier! Whittier Chamber: What is one thing people don’t know about you, but should? I love being my own boss and helping women feel their best, whether it’s by picking out that special dress for that very special event or just being able to share stories with women who sometimes just need someone to listen. My motto is that whatever happens at Simply Susie’s stays at Simply Susie’s! People don’t realize that I really take pride in each outfit that leaves my store. I am always very honest with the women who come in. Sometimes it’s not always easy to tell someone that a dress isn’t as flattering as they had hoped, however, I always suggest other dresses that I believe will fit better and help them to look their very best. I have been warned that I could lose sales
Abilities Faire Photo Caption Attendees enjoy the recent “Living Life Without Limits,” the 10 th annual Abilities Awareness Faire and Celebration of Disabilities Awareness Month, held October 22 at Whittier Community Center. $ TAX TIPS Tax Breaks to Those Who Do Volunteer Work for Charity
Richard Scrivanich If you are a volunteer worker for a charity, you should be aware that your generosity may entitle you to some tax breaks. Although no tax deduction is allowed for the value of services you perform for a charitable organization, some deductions are permitted for out-of-pocket costs you incur while performing the services (subject to the deduction limit that generally applies to charitable contributions). This includes items such as: • Away-from-home travel expenses while performing services for a charity (out-of-pocket round-trip travel cost, taxi fares and other costs of transportation between the airport or station and hotel, plus lodging and meals). However, these expenses aren’t deductible if there’s a significant element of personal pleasure associated with the travel, or if your services for a charity involve lobbying activities. • The cost of entertaining others on behalf of a charity, such as wining and

dining a potential large contributor (but the cost of your own entertainment or meal is not deductible). • If you use your car while performing services for a charitable organization you may deduct your actual unreimbursed expenses directly attributable to the services, such as gas and oil costs. Alternatively, you may deduct a flat 14¢ per mile for charitable use of your car. In either event, you may also deduct parking fees and tolls. • You can deduct the cost of a uniform you wear when you do volunteer work for the charity, as long as the uniform has no general utility (e.g., a volunteer ambulance worker’s jumpsuit). You can also deduct the cost of cleaning the uniform. No charitable deduction is allowed for a contribution of $250 or more unless you substantiate the contribution by a written acknowledgment from the charitable organization. The acknowledgment generally must include the amount of cash, a description of any property contributed, and whether you got anything in return for your contribution. This presents a problem where you as a volunteer make a contribution on behalf of rather than directly to a charity. One way around this is for the charity to pay for the expenses, itself, and then be reimbursed by you (or you can make the donation before the expense is incurred). If this isn’t possible, you can safeguard your deductions as follows: Continued on page 18

The following checklist contains simple steps to protect yourself from becoming a victim of medical insurance fraud. Safeguard your medical information • Shred all documents: Crooks will search your trash to find medical and financial information. 9 Shred all receipts, bills and anything with personal or financial information. • Carry only essential credit cards and/ or documents with you. 9 Do not carry your Social Security card with you. Keep information secure • Be wary of computers and cell phones: 9 Do not store your Social Security Number or Medical Record Number on your phone. 9 Install computer security software with anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall protection. Make sure you update the software. • Passwords and PINs 9 Use a secure password or PIN made up of random numbers and letters. 9 Do not share them with anyone. 9 Do not keep passwords or PINs in your wallet, purse or on your phone. • Mail 9 Wa t c h f r o m w h e r e y o u m a i l correspondence/bills/payments. Consider using a secure USPS mailbox.
Be wary of phone calls • Do not give out information to any stranger. • Beware of “Pfishing” and “Pretext Calls.” 9 Crooks try to use false pretenses to obtain your personal information from you. They may pretend to be a doctor’s office, medical billing company or financial company. Do not give out information. If it is your doctor’s office, they already should have your medical information. • Do not respond to infomercials or commercial solicitations. Monitor medical billing for fraud and/ or errors • Examine all Explanation of Benefits forms. • Promptly remove mail from the mailbox. • Watch for mail/bills which do not arrive. Report Suspected Fraud • Contact the police ASAP and file a report. • Notify your health insurance company as soon as you suspect fraud.
In the Book of Psalms it is written, “We make our plans, but God directs our path.” Planning is a universal component of the human experience. We plan dinner, we plan vacations, we plan for things that may happen and for things we would like to have happen. Financial planning allows us the comfort of knowing we have as much control as possible over our financial futures. The variability of life of course confounds us and from time to time we must adjust our plans. Estate planning addresses the disposition of our estate, using such devices as a Living Trust, our will and Bruce Lazenby, Rose Hills our medical directives, to assure our wishes are followed after Memorial Park our death. & Mortuary You certainly have heard the adage that nothing is for certain but death and taxes. This phrase is usually accepted without much debate; however it could be argued that taxes can be deferred. It is not uncommon when preparing for the divesting our estates we overlook the obvious. We would not be having the conversation with our planner/attorney if we believed we were going to live forever. Remember that while you can defer taxes, you have no control over the two life experiences we all share which are the involuntary act of birth and the day we pass on. When you consider the divestment of your estate, it is vital to reflect on what is important to you, have the proper documents prepared and not to overlook the obvious. Often forgotten is your final disposition. I suggest you follow these steps to assure you have prepared in a way that is important and meaning full to you. 1. Reflect - how do you want to be remembered? What should your service say about your life? Will there be a place for family to come and visit? 2. Record - your decisions eliminate the guesswork for your family. Place this information in a secure place with family documents or in a locked safe. 3. Support - consider a pre-planning purchase to lock in today’s prices and ease the financial burden your family might experience. 4. Share - inform those close to you of your decisions and let them know where the documents are located. I encourage you, either when you are quietly pondering the meaning of life or when you are actively working with your financial or estate planner, to not overlook what really matters. For more information on how to take the next step in planning for your future, contact Bruce Lazenby at (562) 463-4501 or by email to ba.lazenby@rosehills.com.

You may remember that last football game in college where in the final seconds you scored that game winning touch-down, or that one spike you slammed that won the division title. However, many of us athletes remember that devastating torn ACL that ended our track career, or the pulled hamstring that put you on the bench for the remainder of the season.
*NO HAGGLE • NO HASSLE*
Injuries like these are often overlooked as common and temporary, but that is not always the case. It is important to treat these injuries properly. Your career as an athlete may depend on it.

Sports injuries are common in today’s society. Due to increases in athletes’ size, speed, power and strength, greater stress is placed upon athletes’ muscles, tendons and ligaments. The fact is that sports are hard on our bodies. The training and repetitive motion sometimes leaves athletes more susceptible to injury, resulting in unnecessary pulled muscles, tendonitis, stress fractures and unfortunately more often, a lifetime of chronic pain.

WHAT’S COOL IN YOUR SCHOOL Whittier school districts team up for science, math programs
Rio Hondo professor elected President of California Community Colleges Board of Governors
Whittier parents, students, teachers and community leaders recently got a sneak peek at the new hands-on, K-12 science programs to be offered at Pioneer High School through a new Science, Technology, Engineering and Math partnership formed by local schools and Team Science. During the special launch event, Team Science volunteers gave students the chance to try out nine different hands-on activities, including building and launching paper rockets, airships with aluminum sails, small wood and paper windmills, and operating the new NASA flight deck simulator in the school’s library and media center. The Team Science workshops are part of a community-wide effort to provide local students with the skills they need to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The new partnership recently was formed by the Whittier Union High School District, Los Nietos, South Whittier and Whittier City school districts with Team Science, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing programs that will inspire students to become life-long learners in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math. These fun, dynamic, handson classes will begin with a special Summer Science Camp for grades K through 12 that will take place in July 2013 at Pioneer High. Classes will cover a vast array of age-appropriate math and sciences including botany, biology, chemistry, Students and parents get a fun physics lesson from Peter a s t r o n o m y , p h y s i c s , Le of the Gas Company during his demonstration at e n g i n e e r i n g a n d m o r e . Rio Hondo College Professor Manuel Baca has been elected as the new president of the California Community Colleges Board of Governors for the 2013 term. The board, appointed by the governor, nominates and elects its president and vice president each November. The officials serve a one-year term. “We are exceptionally proud and pleased to have one of our faculty members in this important leadership position that will benefit community college students throughout the state,” says Norma Edith Garcia, Rio Hondo College Board of Trustees President. “My fellow board members, the Chancellor and I will voice strongly the need to restore lost access caused by our budget cuts and look at expanding career technical education,” says Baca. “It is also vitally important that we continue to work on access issues for veterans, which is among our highest priorities. I also very much expect that we will continue working to increase access for our community college students to all the CSUs.” Baca’s 30-plus-year career in education has encompassed both the California State University and Community College Systems. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at California State University, Fullerton, and a doctorate from the University of Southern California. Baca has served on the CCC Board of Governors since 2009. In 2011 he was appointed to the California Community College Student Success Task Force, which works to develop a strategic blueprint to help community college students succeed. Baca succeeds Scott Hammerstein, who will continue to serve on the board as immediate past president until his term ends in 2013. The California Community Colleges is the largest system of higher education in the nation. It is composed of 72 districts and 112 colleges serving 2.4 million students per year. Community colleges supply workforce training, basic skills courses in English and math, and prepare students for transfer to fouryear colleges and universities. The Chancellor’s Office provides leadership, advocacy and support under the direction of the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges.

OFFICE LIFE Why You Need To Stop Thinking Like a Small Business There’s a reason some businesses grow beyond “small” and it’s all about mindset.
David Lonsdale, President & Co-owner, Allegiance Capital
It’s easy to hunker down and go into reactive mode, constantly responding to one phone call or crisis or emergency after another. This is especially true in the early days of a small business, when no one really has a job description and everyone pitches in to help however they can. Unfortunately, for most of the companies I work with, the company keeps operating in that small-business state of mind long after the point that thinking like a midsizecompany could make their growth and profitability skyrocket. I’m not talking about “small businesses” and “midsize businesses” the way the Small Business Administration does. Those definitions are made by government officials and used for tax planning purposes. I’m talking about the distinct cultural shift that happens when a company stops thinking of itself as a scrappy little underdog and starts thinking of itself as an established midsize business with a long-term strategy to match. Failing to take the time to challenge small-business attitudes is a sure-fire way to miss out on the growth your company could easily be ready for. Here are three major attitude shifts that happen when a small company becomes a midsize company. Not every company is ready to take the leap, but it’s worthwhile to see if it’s time for you to take one of these steps. Invest in Quality Support Staff Is your neighbor ’s kid still troubleshooting your IT when he gets
home from school? Sure, he’s talented and easy on your pocketbook, but at a certain point, not having the quality support you’d get from a professional costs more money than it saves. I did this twice. At one company I ran, a B2B software services company, we didn’t have a receptionist for three years. When we finally hired someone, it transformed the whole office. None of us had realized how much of our time was taken up handling visitors and phones and office management and supplies. We all juggled travel plans, office management and company events. Furthermore, having a dedicated, friendly professional to answer the phone and greet visitors created a polished and professional first impression that garnered better-quality customers. I made the same mistake several years later, at a company that sold CDROM games in supermarkets. (This was right before the advent of affordable DVDs, so the company didn’t do too well.) With my background in finance, I figured we didn’t need and couldn’t afford a CFO. Wrong! I spent more and more time consumed by the company books. When we finally hired a CFO, it more than doubled the time I had available to spend CEO-ing. In both these cases, we should have made the choice to invest in quality employees years earlier than we actually did, missing out on tons of productivity and growth. A small company generally can’t afford full-time professionals in
key support positions. Midsize companies know they can’t afford not to. Turn Customers Away When you start running a company, it feels like you have to take every order a customer is willing to give you, no matter how small - and sometimes, you do. But when you start getting $10,000 orders, you should be turning away the $1,000 ones. Do the same thing with the $10,000 orders when you start to get $100,000 contracts. Making a small sale generally takes as much effort as making a big sale except that the small one pays a lot less. My wife, an interior designer, recently realized to her astonishment that she spends almost exactly the same amount of time and energy on every project, whether it’s a small kitchen renovation or a full-scale floor-to-ceiling remodeling job. Midsize business owners have shifted from being thrilled to get any customer to knowing that they’re big enough to be choosy, and they reap the financial rewards of doing so. Expand the Management Team I’ve seen plenty of partnerships between one person with a great idea and the engineering know-how to make it happen (“the technical guy”) and another person who knows how to get customers (“the sales guy”). That pairing can successfully grow a business to a
certain point. It starts to founder if the technical guy and the sales guy don’t bring in a “strategy guy” who can develop and implement a successful long-term business plan. At this point, it may even be time to re-structure the company’s ownership, giving the new managers a personal stake in the company’s success. You might also join forces with a strategic partner, or sell part of the company to financial investors in exchange for a shot of growth capital. If you want to successfully transition to being a mid-size business, it is essential that you stop to assess whether your ownership and management have the right attitude towards your company’s growth. If it’s time to take it to the next level, you’d better start making business decisions like midsize companies do. David Lonsdale became president and co-owner of private investment firm Allegiance Capital in 2005 and, since that time, has helped the company achieve a growth rate of more than 50% per year. Every holiday season, the nonprofit partners with local businesses and community supporters in an effort to enrich the lives of families who face mounting hardships: personally, emotionally and financially. Look your best with Simply Susie’s Boutique Continued from page 5 from my honesty, but I disagree. For me, it’s not about the sales; it’s about the relationships that are established. I would rather not sell something that I didn’t think looked great on someone, and after all, my reputation is on the line! I like to earn my customers’ trust. Once when I was 18, I was fired from the clothing store I was working at because I did not meet my sales quota. My boss was disappointed that I did not sell a customer the more expensive shawl and told her that the less expensive one looked better. My boss’ response to me was that I had to “sell, sell, sell no matter what!” Since that day I promised myself that I would never Tax Tips Continued from page 6 • Get written documentation from the charity about the nature of your volunteering activity and the need for related expenses to be paid. For example, if you travel out of town as a volunteer, get a letter from the charity explaining why you’re needed at the out-of-town location. • If you are out-of-pocket for substantial amounts, you should submit a statement of expenses and, preferably, a copy of the receipts, to the charity, and arrange for the charity to acknowledge in writing the amount of the contribution.
