Business Focus

There’s always something special about a family-owned and operated business. This is especially true when that business is selling cars. Whether it’s the first impression as they walk through the door or the final handshake that seals the deal, treating customers like they’re part of the family can make or break more than just a sale, but a reputation. At Ken Grody Ford, providing excellent customer service is the top priority. Not only do their customers keep coming back for more, but they’ve been named Orange County’s #1 Ford Dealer for the past 25 years. The Buena Park dealership boasts numerous accolades setting them apart from their competitors. Among the keys to the company’s success is the dedication and commitment exhibited by their multitude of loyal employees, each of which follow a “customer for life mentality” which has been instilled in them by Ken Grody and Kurt Maletych, who both spend countless hours interacting with sales staff, service staff and, most importantly, the customers. All of Ken Grody’s staff is a 100% Ford Master Certified professional and each is passionate about connecting customers with the Ford that best fits their lifestyle. Ken Grody Ford has won the P r e s i d e n t ’s Aw a r d f o r 1 0 y e a r s consecutively based on customer satisfaction ratings, is a 14-time 100 Club Winner (based on being a top 100 standing in volume for Ford dealerships in the nation) and is a three-time winner of the Triple Crown Title (including 2012), a recognition based on the combination of their President’s Award, Premier Club Award (Customer Satisfaction in the Service Department) and 100 Club standing. Only the top 21 Ford dealers out of 3,500 nationwide receive the honor making Ken Grody Ford a standout not only in our community, but a leading dealership in the U.S. They offer a wide array of services at Ken Grody Ford making it a one-stop shop for quality assistance and repairs. They provide new and used vehicle sales including commercial accounts (fleet sales), offer a full service department, have diesel technicians on location who work specifically with RV and bus repairs, and they also service various municipalities and local Police and Sheriff Departments. EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

It was with great celebration that we began our 99th year at the Whittier Chamber last month! We held our first Wake Up Whittier of 2013 at Parnell Park, hosted by IHOP, with over 200 local business owners and Chamber members in attendance. The Whittier Daily News was also on hand to document the morning activities with pictures and an article, which I hope you all got a chance to read, about our progress and continued success thus far. Now is a good time to remind you to utilize your Whittier Chamber membership by participating in the many networking opportunities the Chamber has to offer! Get noticed and get business by joining us at our next monthly Wake Up Whittier breakfast on February 20 at Merrill Gardens, or our monthly Tasty Tuesday lunch on February 26 at Portofino Ristorante Italiano. Also, don’t forget to save the date for the annual Silver Shield Awards Banquet coming up on March 1 at the Nixon Presidential Library. It is always such a special evening where business owners and residents come together to show appreciation and support for the brave men and women of the Whittier Police Department. Our All-Star Business Expo was another spectacular Chamber event, held on January 24 at the Radisson Hotel Whittier. I hope you all made it your game plan to be there and took advantage of the 100+ businesses who hit a home run by participating. This event always boasts a large crowd and this year we saw hundreds of attendees promoting their businesses and networking with fellow local business owners and Whittier residents. Thank you again to all of the sponsors and Chamber volunteers who helped make the evening such a huge success! This is a truly exciting time to be in business, and more importantly, to be a member of the Whittier Chamber. The climate of the business community has certainly warmed up moving toward the positive side and taking advantage of what the Chamber has to offer is definitely in your best interest as we continue to grow the economy in 2013. Finally, we all know that February is the month of LOVE, and a time to celebrate Valentine’s Day. We certainly do LOVE our Chamber members and encourage you to browse our online search directory at www.whittierchamber.com when making your holiday plans. $ TAX TIPS Deductions of Investor who Manages His Own Investments

Richard Scrivanich You recently asked about the deductibility of your investmentrelated expenses, including the cost of subscriptions to financial periodicals, clerical expenses, etc. You wanted to know whether you could deduct these expenses as business expenses in arriving at adjusted gross income, rather than as production of income expenses which are deductible only as itemized deductions and thus are subject to the 2% floor on miscellaneous itemized deductions. In order to deduct your investmentrelated expenses as business expenses, you must be engaged in a trade or business. The Supreme Court held many years ago that an individual investor isn’t engaged in a trade or business merely because he manages his own securities investments, regardless of the amount of the investments or the extent of the work required. If a taxpayer can show that his investment activities rise to the level of carrying on a trade or business, however, he may be considered a trader, who is engaged in a trade or business, rather than an

investor, who isn’t. A trader is entitled to deduct his investment-related expenses as business expenses. A trader is also entitled to deduct home office expenses if the home office is used exclusively on a regular basis as his principal place of business. An investor, on the other hand, isn’t entitled to home office deductions since his investment activities aren’t a trade or business. Since the Supreme Court’s decision, there has been extensive litigation on the issue of whether a taxpayer is a trader or investor. The Tax Court has recently developed a two-part test that must be satisfied in order for a taxpayer to be a trader. Under this two-part test, a taxpayer’s investment activities are considered a trade or business only where both of the following are true: (1) the taxpayer’s trading is substantial (i.e., sporadic trading won’t be a trade or business), and (2) the taxpayer seeks to catch the

swings in the daily market movements, and to profit from these short-term changes, rather than to profit from longterm holding of investments. Thus, the fact that a taxpayer’s investment activities are regular, extensive, and continuous isn’t in itself sufficient for determining that a taxpayer is a trader. In order to be considered a trader, a taxpayer must show that he buys and sell securities with reasonable frequency in an effort to profit on a shortterm basis. Even a taxpayer who made over 1,000 trades a year with trading activities averaging about $16 million annually was held to be an investor because the holding periods for stocks sold averaged about one year. If you have any questions regarding the above discussed topic or any other tax matter, please feel free to give me a call at (562) 698-9891. Richard Scrivanich, Partner For Harvey & Parmelee LLP

City Of Whittier

UPDATE

MAYOR'S MESSAGE Owen Newcomer

Congratulations to the Whittier Chamber of Commerce for another successful Business Expo last month! The Chamber staff members, Board of Directors and volunteers are greatly appreciated for working so tirelessly on ensuring a fun and valuable event for the benefit of the entire community. Progress at the Fred C. Nelles site is finally being made. This is great news for the community as it has been eight years since the site closed. The city will interview environmental consulting firms this month and will begin the development review process. The state of California and Brookfield Homes amended their contract last summer and it’s great to see the developer moving forward on this project that will most certainly be a positive addition to Whittier. This month’s Business Owners Seminar Series (B.O.S.S.) will be presented by Dr. Manuel Urteaga, chiropractor at Uptown Wellness Center. With the flu season in full swing, you are encouraged to attend the workshop on February 28 to learn more about “Motivating Yourself & Your Team to Stay Healthy During Flu Season.” Having a healthy staff is important to your bottom line. Attend the seminar to learn about the high costs of sick employees and how to encourage sick workers to stay home in an effort to keep your work environment a germ-free zone. More importantly, learn about creating a healthy lifestyle at your place of business. The B.O.S.S. seminars are held the last Thursday of every month from September to June from 8:30 to 10 a.m. at the Whittier Central Library. Space is limited; please call the Whittier Chamber at (562) 698-9554 or Community

Development at (562) 567-9320 to RSVP. Speaking of healthy lifestyles, the new Sprouts Farmers Market, expected to open next month, will offer all-natural and organic groceries. Did you know Whittier already offers opportunities to buy fresh organic produce and meat? Every Friday morning from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., buy directly from the growers at the weekly Farmer’s Market held at the parking lot on Philadelphia Street and Bright Avenue in Uptown. Fresh fruit, vegetables, eggs, nuts, flowers and plants are just some of the weekly offerings. If you prefer more traditional shopping, check out Herbie’s Organic Foods Market at 13310 Whittier Boulevard, a family-owned and operated health food store located just west of Painter Avenue. Herbie’s is proud to offer an all-organic store and also sells a wide range of vitamins, supplements and homeopathic medicines. And we can’t forget Orchard’s Fresh Foods, at 16426 E. Whittier Boulevard, which offers an extensive all-natural meat department with friendly butchers. Who knew healthy food shopping was so easy in Whittier? The annual Silver Shield Awards Banquet is coming up quickly on Friday, March 1. This is the 15th annual awards ceremony and appreciation dinner, hosted by the Whittier Chamber of Commerce, where the community comes together to celebrate and recognize the brave men and women of the Whittier Police Department. I hope you will attend the dinner or sponsor a police officer to attend for only $100. To do so, please contact the Whittier Chamber office. Finally, this Valentine’s Day, surprise your loved one by taking them out for dinner at one of the many fine Whittier restaurants! Find everything you need to make your Valentine’s Day holiday special by shopping Whittier and allowing your dollars to help support local businesses!

More importantly, learn about creating a healthy lifestyle at your place of business in a cost effective manner. The seminar will be presented by Whittier Chamber Member Dr. Manuel Urteaga of Uptown Wellness Center. City Council passes ordinance; Whittier parks to go “smoke-free” February 8

In response to the growing concern over the health dangers resulting from second-hand smoke, the Whittier City Council has passed an ordinance which will prohibit smoking in the City’s parks, effective as of Friday, February 8, 2013. The no-smoking ordinance had its first reading at the December 11, 2012 Council meeting, followed by the second reading at the January 8, 2013 meeting. After the second reading is held, a new ordinance goes into effect in 30 days. Smoking will be prohibited within City parks, including parking lots, or within 50 feet of such a facility. The prohibition shall not affect smoking on private property, such as a home’s front yard, if it is within 50 feet of a park, or to people smoking while passing a park on a street or sidewalk. In addition, the ordinance prohibits the disposal of any tobacco product, such as cigarettes and cigars, in the areas where smoking is not allowed. Signs will be posted prior to the effective date of the ordinance to alert and educate park visitors about the new ban on smoking. The road leading to the ban on smoking in public parks began as a grassroots movement, spearheaded by Activate Whittier. Activate Whittier, a consortium made up of representatives from the YMCA of Greater Whittier, PIH Health, Los Angeles County Public Health Department, Kaiser Permanente, the Boys and Girls Club of Whittier, Whittier College and the City of Whittier studies and makes recommendations for public and private programs and activities to help improve the health and wellness of Whittier residents. Activate Whittier is currently working with HEAL and ACHIEVE grant funding to encourage increased physical activity, better nutrition and access to healthy foods, as well as advocacy and policy changes in the community toward these goals. Taking the lead in the effort to ban smoking in public parks, Activate Whittier brought the matter to the attention of the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission, seeking the Commission’s recommendation to City Council to eliminate smoking in City parks. At its June 20, 2012 meeting, the Commission discussed Activate Whittier’s request and recommended that the City Council approve an ordinance amending the Whittier Municipal Code to this effect, which was accomplished by Council action at the January 8, 2013 meeting with the

second reading of the ordinance. In presenting the case for smokefree parks, Activate Whittier brought up the following concerns to City of Whittier officials: • In 2006, a United States Surgeon General study concluded that people who breathe secondhand smoke inhale more than 50 cancer-causing chemicals. • The Surgeon General has stated that secondhand smoke causes diseases and premature death in non-smokers and maintained that there is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke. • Stanford University research concluded this to be true outdoors as well as indoors. • Cigarettes are a top litter item in parks which could impact children at play in parks. In addition, when presenting the case for no smoking in City parks, Activate Whittier noted that when, in 1998, the State of California adopted a law prohibiting smoking in public buildings, within 20 feet of the main entrances, exits and windows of these buildings, the State also took action authorizing cities to enact more restrictive smoking bans as they felt necessary. This provided the springboard for the smoke free parks effort. While planning this no smoking request to the C i t y, t h e L o s Angeles County Public Health Tobacco Control and Prevention Program conducted an informal survey of 508 residents within both the City of Whittier and the unincorporated Whittier area, including a cross-section of various age, sex and ethnic groups. Of those surveyed, 90.8% did not use tobacco and 9.2% were tobacco users. The results of this informal survey showed that 78.2% favored no smoking in public parks and 62.2% said they would feel more comfortable asking someone to stop smoking in a park if it were illegal. Although smoking in Whittier parks will now be illegal, the City will be relying primarily on community selfregulation and courtesy rather than a proactive approach, however repeat offenders could be cited if they refuse to stop smoking when asked by other park visitors. Whittier now joins more than 140 California cities, along with Los Angeles County, which prohibits smoking in public parks as a way to protect the health of its residents.

WHAT’S COOL IN YOUR SCHOOL Capital Fellowship Program deadlines fast approaching The Jesse Marvin Unruh Assembly Fellowship, the California Senate Fellows, the Executive Fellowship and the Judicial Administration Fellowship Programs are excellent opportunities for students or others to gain firsthand knowledge of the operations of the three branches of state government. The Jesse Marvin Unruh Assembly Fellowship Program, founded in 1957, by the legendary former Speaker Jesse Unruh and renamed in his honor in 1987, is the oldest of the four programs and one of the most prestigious legislative fellowship programs in the nation. Each year, 18 college graduates are selected for the Unruh Assembly Fellowship from an international applicant pool. Assembly Fellows spend 11 months gaining firsthand knowledge of the California Legislature by working in Sacramento as staff to a legislative committee or an Assemblymember. Their duties are similar to those of legislative assistants and consultants, which include developing and researching legislative proposals, responding to constituent requests, analyzing bills, and writing speeches and press releases. February 11 is the last day on which applications will be accepted. If you would like brochures on the programs or information on how to apply, please call (916) 278-6906. For questions or further assistance, contact the office of Assemblymember Ian Calderon at (562) 692-5858.

Deadline: February 11, 2013 Cal Grant scholarship application deadlines set for March 2 The Cal Grant Program ensures that any qualified student will not be turned away from a college education due to financial difficulty. The Cal Grant Program provides eligible students with financial aid in the form of need-based grants funded by the State of California. The program is administered by the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC). Cal Grants are intended for middle and low-income California residents attending California post-secondary schools (both public and private institutions). Recently enacted legislation expanded the Cal Grant Program. AB 130, also known as the California Dream Act of 2011, makes undocumented students that are exempt from paying out-of-state fees at California’s public higher education institutions eligible to receive scholarships that are funded by non-state funds. Its companion bill, AB 131, allows students that qualify for in-state tuition at public colleges and universities, regardless of immigration status, to be eligible for institutional financial aid awards, effective January 1, 2013. The deadline for qualifying for Cal Grants is March 2, 2013. For more information on Cal Grants, please call the California Student Aid Commission at (888) 224-7268. Additionally, the Commission has a website and the Free Application for Federal Aid (FAFSA) can be found there. Contact the office of Assemblymember Ian Calderon for further inquiries at (562) 692-5858.

Kelly shows how businesses can appreciate employees and co-workers As seen on www.reuters.com Valentine’s Day is not just for the romantically inclined! It is a time for business leaders and managers, as well as co-workers, to recognize people for their kindness, support and work the rest of the year. “Virtually no one feels over appreciated at work,” said Mary C. Kelly, a business leadership keynote speaker and author of the award-winning book, “Master Your World: 10 Dog-Inspired Leadership Lessons to Improve Productivity, Profits and Communication.” The book recently received the “Pinnacle Book Achievement Award as Best Book in the Business Category by the National Association of Book Entrepreneurs. “This lack of appreciation is due to increased demands on managers, more regulations that require more compliance measures, and a project management system that rewards outcomes,” said Kelly, a retired Navy Commander, who presents speeches and consults with companies and associations for leadership and management. “Study after study shows that recognition for doing something well at work, not money, is the top motivator of employee performance,” she said. “While retailers are exhibiting all kinds of ideas to show appreciation for romantic relationships, chances are you spend more awake time with the people you work with than your sweetie.” Kelly offers these Valentine’s Day office activities to make the workplace a little sweeter and show your workplace people some love. 1. Install a white board in a common area called the “Gratitude Board” or the “Wall of Thanks.” Encourage employees to write short notes to thank each other on the board. Take a picture of the board on Friday and print the picture for everyone who

was mentioned that week. Start over each Monday. (This works well for shift workers too, when sometimes it is hard for people to connect.) Have a fun workday theme and contest, such as “Colorful Sock Day” where no one wears shoes that day at work. This works best when the CEO wears outrageous socks and prominently walks around displaying Mickey Mouse toes. Winner of the “Colorful Sock Day” gets awarded with, of course, socks. Customers, by the way, think this is hilarious! If you are a retail store, extend the appreciation and include a pair of wild socks with every purchase. Scheduling a meeting during lunch? Provide lunch! Post a thank you note on someone’s door, computer screen or cubicle. Say thank you. Sincerely, honestly and for a specific action or behavior. Better, say thank you with a handwritten card.

“There is no one singular action or activity that will motivate everyone, but sometimes just being thanked goes a long way,” said Kelly. About Mary C. New Disability, Workers’ Comp Rules Changes to Fair Employment/Housing Disability Regulation take effect Several changes to the disability regulations under the Fair Employment and Housing Commission (FEHC) went into effect on December 30, 2012. The changes to the disability regulations include:

• An expansion of the definitions of • •

“mental” and “physical” disability; Clarification of what evidence might be used to show that a particular function is “essential” to a job; A description of the interactive process and obligations of both the employer and the employee or job applicant; and A description of what constitutes a reasonable accommodation and specific examples, including a discussion of when a leave of absence might be an appropriate accommodation.

The text of the regulations is identical to the version adopted by the FEHC on December 18, 2012. A copy of the approved disability regulations is available at www.dfeh.ca.gov/Fair EmploymentAndHousingCouncil.htm.

These amendments to the disability regulations are separate from the recently approved amended pregnancy disability leave regulations, which also took effect on December 30, 2012.

HRCalifornia Updates HRCalifornia has been updated with an expanded discussion of these regulations. California Chamber of Commerce customers also can get an expanded discussion of the disability regulations and the pregnancy disability leave regulations and their impact on state law in the 2013 California Labor Law Digest.

February Seminar CalChamber employment law experts will hold a live half-day seminar in Sacramento on February 15 that will cover the amended regulations in detail, and their impact on employers and employees. An on-demand webinar that discusses the amended regulations and their impact on employers also is available at www.calchamberstore.com.

Emergency Workers’ Comp Rules Implement Reform Legislation Emergency regulations to implement cost-saving elements in the workers’ compensation reform bill enacted last year went into effect on January 1. The California Chamber of Commerce supported the reform bill, SB 863 (De León; D-Los Angeles; Chapter 363, Statutes of 2012), which contained critical reforms for improving efficiency and reducing unnecessary costs in the California workers’ compensation system, which are necessary to offset the $1 billion benefit increase provided under the bill and dampen the trend of increasing costs to employers. The reforms potentially lower system costs for employers by reducing delays and litigation in the system, addressing the lien epidemic, shortening the medical-legal process, implementing an independent medical review system and streamlining the permanent disability schedule.

Regulation Changes Although the benefit increases kick in automatically, most of the costsaving reforms require regulatory implementation. The Brown administration made notable progress against an extremely tight deadline in December. Regulatory changes now in effect include:

• changes to the Supplemental Job Displacement Voucher;

• new systems for resolving medical treatment and billing disputes;

• filing fees from service providers who file liens;

• new requirements for medical examiners;

• payment changes to surgery centers •

and hospitals that perform spinal implant procedures; and new requirements for interpreters and chiropractors.

Some of these changes will be followed by formal rulemaking in 2013. More information on the new regulations is available at the website of the Division of Workers’ Compensation within the state Department of Industrial Relations at www.dir.ca.gov/dwc.

Silver Shield Continued from page 1 This year the event will be held in the beautiful East Room at the Richard Nixon Library in Yorba Linda. Dinner will be served by the award-winning White House Catering. Musical entertainment will once again be provided by Ernie Hernandez from Calendar Entertainment. “It is an honor for the Whittier Chamber to host this special event again this year,” stated Chamber President Sue Dean from Notary Signing Network. “We are proud of our partnership with the WPD and it is our privilege to coordinate this event to highlight all that they do for our community on a daily basis.” The Whittier Police Department provides a variety of law enforcement services to the citizens of Whittier and Santa Fe Springs. The Department is comprised of the Patrol,

One of the outstanding programs developed by the WPD is the highly successful Community Based Policing Program. A cornerstone of this model program is a partnership between the Police Department, city residents and businesses to produce a high quality of life for all citizens. “The Police Department’s relationship with the Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce and the surrounding business community is one that is strong and respected. This relationship enables our department to serve our citizens and has bolstered the partnership that drives effective enforcement efforts. The men and women of

the Whittier Police Department feel extremely fortunate to enjoy this relationship with our community partners,” explained Chief Jeff Piper. The Silver Shield event is designed to give businesses and individuals the opportunity to say thank you to our police department. “There are many ways to participate, but I want to personally invite you to be a Friend Sponsor which covers the cost for an officer to attend the event at no charge,” stated Silver Shield Chair Doug Rowan of Cetera Advisor Networks. How You Can Say

Goodbye to Back Pain,

For Good

The U.S. Department of Labor estimates that 100 million work days per year are lost due to low back pain! Carrying your kids on your shoulders, cleaning the floors, lifting, sitting all day at work, or a little extra up front (that’s the pendulous abdominal syndrome), it’s no wonder that 80 percent of Americans suffer from back pain at some point in their lives. Whether it’s from a sports injury or a previous auto accident, when you have pain in your back, it means that your back structure (the muscles, joints, discs and vertebrae) has lost its normal functioning, and therefore cannot provide the necessary support to your spine. How do you find relief for your aching back? Doctors of Chiropractic specialize in finding the cause of your lower back pain. Combining spinal adjustments with proper exercises and stretches, and incorporating a well balanced diet are keys to reducing or eliminating your back pain safely and naturally, without having to resort to painful surgery. Our office has experienced considerable success in resolving back pain. We utilize the state-of-the-art technology, the ProAdjuster, to identify the source of your ailments. In fact, the ProAdjuster’s revolutionary technology has received a patient satisfaction rating of over 92%. If you or someone you know is suffering from back pain, you may want to consider being evaluated with the ProAdjuster. Please contact our office, and we will send you more information about this advanced technology, or you can call our office today to schedule your evaluation. You have nothing to lose but your back pain!

I was having a hard time sitting or standing for more than 10 minutes due to lower back and leg pain and now after 3 months of ProAdjuster treatments, I have no problem at all. Also, for years I could not jump on our trampoline with my kids without my neck hurting and my left arm, hand and fingers hurting or going numb. Yesterday I jumped and played on the trampoline for a solid hour and my neck and arm are great! It was so fun. I'm so surprised. It's unbelievable! - Kristy Aho

The Building Blocks of Attracting Customers

Judy Bradt of A Special Event (far right) showcases some delicious treats compliments of Lindt Chocolate representative Roy Hanna (center) and his mom, Dee (far left), who hosted a table at Wake Up Whittier last month

General Manager Michelle Montgomery (second from left) and her fellow staff members from IHOP of Whittier served up a delicious breakfast for the Chamber’s first networking event of the year

Whether you’re a Fortune 500 company or a one-person shop, to be successful, you must have a plan to attract customers and you must implement it consistently. However, it doesn’t have to cost a fortune and you don’t have to be a creative genius. The key to attracting customers is developing a marketing strategy that forms a solid foundation for your promotional efforts, by implementing advertising, direct mail, social media and one-to-one sales efforts. To develop a strong marketing foundation: Define your product or service: How is your product or service packaged? What is it that your customers are really buying? You may be selling webbased software tools but your clients are buying increased productivity, improved efficiency and cost savings. What problem does your service solve? What need does your product meet? What want does it fulfill? Identify your ideal customer: Everyone or anybody might be a potential client or customer for your product. However, you probably don’t have the time or money to market to Everyone or Anybody. Who is your ideal customer? Who does it make sense for you to spend your time and money promoting your service or product to? For example: a massage therapist might decide her target market is a woman with a household income of $75,000 or more who lives in the nice area of town. Differentiate yourself from the competition: Even if there are no direct competitors for your service,

there is always competition of some kind. Something besides your product is competing for the potential customer’s money. What is it and why should the potential customer spend his or her money with you instead? What is your competitive advantage or unique selling proposition? Find a niche: Is there a customer group that is not currently being served or is not being served well? Are there customer wants that are not being met? A niche strategy allows you to focus your marketing efforts and dominate your market, even if you are a small player. Develop awareness: It is difficult for a potential customer to buy your product or service if they don’t even know or remember it exists. Generally a potential customer will have to be exposed to your product 5 to 15 times before they are likely to think of your product when the need arises. Needs often arise unexpectedly. You must stay in front of your clients and customers consistently if they are going to remember your product when that need arises. Build credibility: Not only must clients be aware of your product or service, they also must have a positive disposition toward it. Potential customers must trust that you will deliver what you say you will. Often, especially with large or risky purchases, you need to give them the opportunity to sample, touch, or taste the product in some way. Be Consistent: Be consistent in every way and in everything you do. This includes the look of your business,

marketing materials, the message you deliver, the level of customer service, and the quality of the product. Being consistent is more important than having the best product. This in part is the reason for the success of chains. Whether you re going to Little Rock, Arkansas or New York City, if you reserve a room at a Courtyard Marriott you know exactly what you’re going to get. Maintain Focus: Focus allows for more effective utilization of the scarce resources of time and money. Your promotional budget will bring you greater return if you use it to promote a single product to a narrowly defined group of customers and if you promote that same product to that same customer group over a continuous period of time. Before you develop marketing materials, run an ad, implement a direct mail campaign, join a networking group, start a Facebook page, add a Twitter or Pinterest account, ask yourself this question, Do I really know who my ideal customers are and not only what they need but also what they want? Local organization aims to prevent child homelessness Please join Pacific Western Bank, Rose Hills Memorial Park & Mortuary, PIH Health and Popular Community Bank in making a difference in the lives of homeless families. The Whole Child will hold its 43rd Annual The Heart of A Child Luncheon on Friday, February 8 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Sheraton in Cerritos. Annually, the luncheon draws nearly 400 participants representing businesses, government (including the City of Whittier, the City of Santa Fe Springs and the City of Pico Rivera) and community-based organizations, as well as community members, who come together to support the important work of The Whole Child. In the southeastern Los Angeles County there are currently over

1,000 families without housing. The devastation experienced by these homeless children is significant. They have twice the rate of learning disabilities and three times the rate of emotional and behavioral problems of non-homeless children. Many families are forced to separate when they become homeless. Nationwide, approximately one-third of children in foster care have a homeless or unstable house parent. Holland Chiropractic has been serving the La Habra, Whittier, Brea, Fullerton, Hacienda Heights, La Mirada and Placentia areas with quality chiropractic care for over 23 years. They specialize in getting you out of pain fast and naturally. While chiropractic care has helped many people finally put their pain in the past, it isn’t right for everyone. At Holland Chiropractic Center, they will sit down with you and do an initial consultation and examination to find out more about how you got to the point you are at now. The exam will evaluate your muscles, joints and nerves of the spine and chiropractic tests to determine if you will be helped with chiropractic care. Holland Chiropractic offers a variety of techniques to fit each patient’s needs and comfort level, offers office hours that are convenient for your schedule and several payment options in the event that your insurance company doesn’t cover chiropractic care (although many do and they are contracted providers for most of the plans). If you’ve ever thought about visiting a chiropractor, they encourage you to take advantage of their new patient offer and visit their office today!
