Summer is almost over! Where is the time going? If you attended the Shop Local Showcase at the Whittwood Town Center last month, you know that it was a great chance for our members to promote their products and services and to encourage keeping sales tax dollars local. Around 1400 visitors browsed through over 100 tables of participating Chamber vendors under two large tents, and special entertainment from community groups like the YMCA and Studio Danza was enjoyed by all. Carolyn Reggio and her Shop Local committee, along with our hard working Chamber staff, put on another wonderful event for our Chamber. I want to thank our sponsors who helped to make it all happen. The trip donated from the Traveling Traveler and the Dodger tickets from Republic Services made our auction boards a great success. RMH Dance & Productions made it so easy to hear all the important announcements and played great music to add to the perfect summer evening. Promote your business at the Business Expo • Set sales goals and targets. Marketing really is a numbers game. Know what your goals are in terms of revenue, expenses, profit, number of inquiries and, of course, number of new sales. • Get a handle on the four Ps of marketing. Getting your product, pricing, placement strategy (distribution) and promotional strategy humming along and working together is crucial to good marketing.

Event for their support. Last month’s Wake Up Whittier was hosted by the Credit Union of Southern California. Again, CUSoCal outdid themselves by providing a great setting and delicious food for about 200 attendees who took advantage of the opportunity to network their business. During roundtable discussions, attendees talked about successful ways they are marketing their business. Here are some quick tips to help you with your marketing plan: • Put your customers first. Understanding who your customers are, what makes them tick and what they really want and value is important. Staying in touch with them long after the sale will definitely put you ahead of the competition. • Know your target market. Targeting your marketing activities directly to the people who need and want your service or product is the secret to creating quality leads and getting prospects to open their wallets. • Understand that marketing is not advertising. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that paid advertising and websites are the only two ways to attract more business. You can market your small business in literally hundreds of ways, so it pays to know what they are and then eliminate the ones that won’t work, or that you can’t afford, upfront. The Whittier Chamber provides excellent free or low-cost, effective ways to market your business. Here are some quick and easy ways to promote your business through Chamber programs and services: Attend a networking event (breakfast, lunch, mixers, etc.) Host a seminar or special event Submit a press release Donate a raffle prize

City Of Whittier
UPDATE
Congratulations to the Whittier Chamber of Commerce for another successful Shop Local Showcase last month! The dedication and hard Bob Henderson work of the Chamber staff, Board of Directors and the many businesses that participated is greatly appreciated. The Local Showcase is a fun and valuable event for the entire community that serves as a reminder of how fortunate we are to have many wonderful businesses in the city. Please challenge yourself and your neighbors to Shop Whittier, especially during this “Back to School Shopping” season. The sales tax generated by taxable sales stays in Whittier when we shop in Whittier. One percent of all sales tax goes directly to help fund public safety, community services, street maintenance and other important services. For example, if you take your children shopping for school clothes and spend $500, the City’s General Fund will receive $5 which can help fund afterschool programs. I encourage you to rediscover shopping in our city and SHOP WHITTIER for all your Back to School shopping! The city has a new online program called “Tools for Business Success” which offers local, state, federal and best-of-the-web resources directly from the city of Whittier website. This new economic development tool will make it easier for businesses to start and grow here in Whittier. The new program provides a plethora of information easily accessible from your home or office computer, saving business owners valuable time. Some examples of how business owners will benefit are:
Summer concerts offer music under the stars
MAYOR'S MESSAGE
• For start-up businesses, Tools for Business Success helps them choose the type of business entity that meets their needs, offers business plan software, and contains a Business Start-Up Kit. • The Government Requirements Kit has forms and simplified instructions for new and ongoing businesses and for employers. There is also a tool showing all the forms due in the next 90 days for specific business entities. • There is an Employer’s Kit with information on hourly pay for over 850 different positions and a tool to help create employee job descriptions. • If businesses are looking for loans, the Funding Programs section is a great resource for loans available in our area as well as local lenders that participate in SBA loan programs. The Loan Payment Calculator will help businesses quickly determine payments for the loans requested. • Tools for Business Success has many resources to help existing businesses grow, including tools to build an online marketing plan, resources and information on how to become visible on social media, and, for businesses in financial trouble, a 30-day Business Turnaround Program. • If the business person is having difficulty finding a specific resource or information for their business, an Online Help feature will be available during day and evening hours, six days a week, and will connect the business person to a live person via online instant message. I encourage you to peruse the site and tell your business friends and neighbors all about it. The Tools for Business Success can be found on the city’s website at www.cityofwhittier.org under the Economic Development Division in the Community Development Department. Finally, there’s still time to attend Concerts in the Park which are held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Mondays at Central Park and Thursdays at Parnell Park through August 15th. Call (562) 567-9430 for more information on city events.
Foundation honors local arts advocates
Recipients of the Whittier Cultural Arts Foundation Honors Night Award for their contributions to and in support of advancing the arts in Whittier are (left to right): Sandra Hahn, Friend of the Arts and owner of Crepes and Grapes Cafe; Fran Shields, Arts Advocate and Director of the Whittier Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department; Maya Hivale, Artist and Children’s Advocate, who uses art to help children deal with and recover from abuse; and Raul Rodriguez, Artist/Designer of Fiesta Floats, an award-winning float designer. Approximately 130 people turned out to honor the four for their efforts to promote art in Whittier at a banquet held in late June at the Radisson Hotel Whittier.
Whittier’s ever-popular Summer Concerts in the Park series features a wonderful variety of musical entertainment designed to appeal to all ages and musical tastes. Concerts are held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays through August 12 at Central Park, corner of Washington Avenue and Bailey Street in Uptown Whittier, and from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays through August 15 at Parnell Park, 15390 Lambert Road. The free concerts are sponsored by the City of Whittier, Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe and the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. Seating is festival-style and concertgoers may bring lawn chairs or blankets for comfort while they enjoy
music under the stars. Those attending the concerts are reminded that pets, barbeques, alcoholic beverages and smoking are not allowed. The concerts truly offer something for everyone’s tastes. Residents may spend an evening picnicking in the park with family and friends while listening to quality musical entertainment. Even better, don’t worry about dinner. Enjoy the variety of freshly-cooked food, including desserts, on sale by food vendors at the park. American Red Cross names local heroes at annual ceremony The Greater Long Beach/Rio Hondo Chapter of the American Red Cross recently honored thirteen local heroes who performed extraordinary acts of courage at its 6th Annual Hometown Heroes Award Luncheon on June 27, 2013 at Quiet Cannon in Montebello. “We are very proud of the life-saving efforts of these local heroes and appreciate their willingness to share their extraordinary stories,” said Margaret Arbini-Madonna, CEO of the Rancho Region. “Their heroic acts truly exemplify the American Red Cross mission to prevent and alleviate human suffering.”
Below are the four honorees recognized from the Whittier area:
Jennifer Garcia, Clayton Duran & Jesse Cabadas On May 11, 2012, the recruits of the Sheriff's Training Academy and Regional Services (STARS) Center in Whittier were on an early 3-mile morning run. Safety instructor, Deputy Jesse Cabadas, was driving the safety vehicle behind approximately 80 recruits. It was his job to watch for any runners showing signs of distress. He noticed one recruit was struggling, and about half way through the run he ordered him into the vehicle. Almost immediately afterward, Deputy Cabadas heard a strange noise coming from the back seat which prompted him to look back, at which point he saw the recruit convulsing. Deputy Cabadas called for assistance and Clayton Duran and Jennifer Garcia responded quickly by performing CPR immediately. Together, they were able to save the young recruit’s life.
Henry Hernandez, Whittier On the morning of January 12, 2012, Henry Hernandez was driving to a bus stop at Whittier Blvd. and Garfield, where he intended to catch the bus to his job. He saw two cars racing down the street when suddenly the sedan lost control, crashed into a tree and caught on fire. He ran to assist and successfully pulled the driver from the burning car saving his life. The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies nearly half of the nation's blood; teaches lifesaving skills; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization, not a government agency, and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. For more information on services or the annual Hometown Heroes event, please visit www.redcross.org or follow their blog at http://blog.redcross.org.

In general, two-earner couples, especially those with higher incomes, are more likely to be subject to a marriage penalty. Luxury auto depreciation limits for 2013. Under special “luxury automobile” rules, a taxpayer’s otherwise available depreciation deduction for business autos, light trucks, and vans is subject to additional limits, which operate to extend depreciation beyond its regular period. The IRS has released the inflationadjusted depreciation limits for business autos, light trucks and vans placed in service in 2013. The depreciation deduction limits for 2013 are the same as in 2012 for a passenger auto, while the limits (other than the first-year limits, which are the same) are $100 higher for a light truck or van. The first-year depreciation limit is $3,160 for autos and $3,360 for light trucks or vans first placed in service in 2013. However, if the bonus depreciation rules apply, these first-year limits are increased by $8,000 to $11,160 for autos and $11,360 for light trucks or vans.

The employer mandate essentially imposes a penalty on employers if one or more of their full-time employees obtain a premium tax credit through the newly established insurance exchange. The new regulations would clarify the rules for determining whether the mandate applies to any given employer, and also provide transitional relief. The 90-day waiting period rule sets out a maximum waiting period that can be applied by a group health plan or group health insurance issuer, and the regulations explain certain eligibility requirements and how the period is computed. Finally, the regulations on the $500,000 deduction limit clarify which issuers are subject to the limit and how it is applied, notably excluding employers that maintain self-insured medical reimbursement plans. If you have any questions regarding the above discussed topic or any other tax matter, please feel free to give me a call at (562) 698-9891. Richard Scrivanich, Partner For Harvey & Parmelee LLP

WHAT’S COOL IN YOUR SCHOOL Engineers volunteer to conduct science program with diverse K-12 students Igniting kids’ interest in science, technology, math and engineering through fun, hands-on experiments was the focus of Pioneer High School’s first Team Science Summer Camp. Held in July, the three-weekend program attracted a diverse group of 400 K-12 students who were excited about taking classes from real scientists and engineers, as well as educators who all volunteered their time. In “Robotronics,” high school students learned how to build and control robots using computer codes. “Space Trek” taught middle and high school students the fundamental math and science behind space flight through a series of experiments culminating with a simulated space shuttle flight. Kindergartners learned about their digestive system by creating tactile artwork in “It’s All About Me.” And middle school students conquered the basics of mechanical engineering while working in teams to figure out “How to Trap a Road Runner.” “It’s so much fun because you get to work on a new project each day and
it brings everyone together because you help each other out,” said Patrick Martinez, who will be a freshman at Santa Fe High School this year. “You learn how to keep on trying until you figure things out.” Team Science Summer Camp is part of a community-wide effort to provide local students with the skills they need to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The new partnership was formed by the Whittier Union High School District, Los Nietos, South Whittier and Whittier City school districts with Team Science, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing programs that will inspire students to become lifelong learners in STEMrelated fields of study. “We are excited about providing our young people with programs that will nurture their love and knowledge of science, technology, engineering and math and help prepare them to pursue those fields in college and careers,” said Whittier Union High School District Superintendent Sandra Thorstenson. “Team Science Summer Camp did just that, and we look forward to implementing this program again next summer.” Team Science Summer Science Camp classes covered a vast array of ageappropriate math and science subjects including botany, biology, chemistry, astronomy, physics, engineering and more. Several of the classes were led by educators and scientists with years of professional experience, all of whom volunteer their time. During the last 21 years, Team Science has grown to become a premier nonprofit organization working to bring quality

enrichment programs to children and to ensure that students are given opportunities to pursue successful educations and careers in STEM-related fields. “We were thrilled to have the opportunity to bring the Team Science Summer Camp to Pioneer High School and the Whittier community and we look forward to many more Summer Science Camps here in the future,” said Marie Mungaray, President and Executive Director of Team Science. “Our goal is to instill the love of math and science in every heart and the power of math and science in every mind.” Mungaray says students who complete Team Science programs have gone on to pursue math, science, technology, engineering, law and business degrees at prestigious universities such as MIT, Caltech, Stanford University, Harvard University, USC, UCLA, UC Irvine, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Pomona, Whittier College, and the United States Air Force Academy. Kimberly Kamkar took “Robotronics” as a Team Science Summer Camp student and this summer she taught the class. She and her father Joseph Kamkar are among a large group of Team Science parents and students who come back every year to volunteer their time to the project because they feel so strongly about its positive impact on children. “I had so much fun with hands-on science as a student and it meant so much to me that I wanted to be able to give that experience to other kids,” Kamkar said. Many Team Science alumni have also achieved successful positions in organizations such as the Judge
Advocate General’s Corp (JAG) in the United States Air Force, the Boeing Company, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon Company, Cisco Systems, and many others, Mungaray said. Team Science sponsors include Southern California Gas Company, Employees Community Fund of Boeing California, NuVision Federal Credit Union and Southern California Edison.

Breakthrough Treatment Now Available In Whittier
Whittier, CA - Imagine forty years ago if you were told that lasers would replace scalpels in surgery or that robotic instruments would build cars; you may not have believed it. By the same token, would you believe that chiropractic treatments could be performed using a special hand-held instrument developed by NASA scientists; all while you were sitting in an upright position without any turning or twisting movements? According to Dr. Yani Feliciano, “This new form of computerized treatment is so gentle and effective, that it truly amazes even the most skeptical patients. It’s called the ProAdjuster and is the latest, state-of-theart technology in existence today, and the only one in Whittier.” The ProAdjuster can safely and gently analyze and treat the spine and other joints to remove the nerve impingement that is often the cause of pains in the low back, neck, shoulder and elsewhere in the body. It also works on a variety of muscular conditions to loosen tight muscles with ease and comfort. Many patients say that it’s like getting a mini-massage. Even patients with knee, hip and foot problems such as plantar fascitis are being helped. It is also covered by most insurance companies including medicare. Dr. Yani uses the ProAdjuster to analyze a patient’s spine and pin-point areas of nerve impingement syndrome causing malfunction and pain.
Dr. Yani says that “The secret to the ProAdjuster lies in its ability to deliver an extremely precise and gentle adjustment.” She says that, “Even though traditional forms of adjusting also work, people are drawn to this new technique because of how gentle it is and does not involve any twisting, especially in the neck.
Many people like getting adjusted with traditional manual techniques, all of which are safe and effective. But there are a large number of people who never get to experience the amazing benefits of chiropractic because they are scared to have their spines adjusted in that way,” says Dr. Yani. Now, there is no longer a reason to be weary. The ProAdjuster is perfect for anyone who has been thinking about going to a chiropractor, but hasn’t yet made that decision. Dr. Yani wants everyone to be able to experience these same benefits and if you have any of the following conditions, the ProAdjuster may be the answer you’ve been looking for... • Planter Fascitis • TMJ • Arthritis • Low back pain • Sciatic pain • Knee or hip pain • Headaches • Fibromyalgia • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome • Neck & Shoulder pain • Sports Injuries • Scoliosis Treatment with the ProAdjuster is consistent, measurable and extremely gentle. Call Isabel at our office today and mention this article to receive a FREE ProAdjuster analysis to pin-point your problem areas and to see how the ProAdjuster can help. Call within the next seven days and you will also receive a complimentary examination that can show the areas of your stress and how it’s affecting your body. Call (562) 698-1275 today to reserve your free ProAdjuster Analysis Scan. This technological marvel can help you return to a healthier lifestyle. You may no longer have to live with a persistent, painful condition. Call us today!
"I was in agony, with a lot of shoulder pain and lower back pain. After one ProAdjuster treatment, the very next day, I felt like a million bucks. It was fantastic!" ~Jason Francev

Home Improvement 101: Summer construction tips
CATCHING UP WITH
ERIN HODGES CAPC, INC.
If you could change one thing about your business' day-today routine, what would it be? Time (and a place!) for a nap would be incorporated in each work day. I am a huge believer in the positive effects of a power nap.
Connect – Influence – Inspire
What company do you not want to start but wish someone else would? A non-profit organization that supports the fundraising efforts of other non-profits. Specifically, this company would lend out volunteers who build elaborate silent auction baskets, go door-to-door or website-to-website soliciting for donations, etc. CAPC’s very own ultra-creative Debbie Cruz would be the Executive Director!
What have you learned by being a part of the Young Professionals Group? Much can be accomplished in business virtually; however, a key component in professional success is building personal relationships that start with an actual handshake.
What is your biggest pet peeve at your office? Written communication with pour grammer and spelling that pull you’re attention from the massage trying too be delivered. (Right?!)
WYPG
WHITTIER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS GROUP
What is one thing about Human Resources that every business professional should know? Retaining your best employees is accomplished by treating them as you would your best customers.
What’s your favorite local business? I am partial to the responsive team at ACRO Printing, Inc. Their printing services are excellent (especially when it comes to helping HR professionals who try to pose as marketing assistants!) Their commitment to enriching the community they do business in is extremely admirable.

AUGUST 2013
DIY Tip of the Month – Looking for a quick and easy way to enhance the appearance of your home without it costing you a fortune? Consider investing in a new front door or painting it a new color! Fairly simple projects like this one can really add to the appearance of your home and will only increase its curb appeal. If you feel as though you still want more, look into putting new lighting up or replacing the trim along the front door. Even putting up new house numbers, perhaps in a different color or style, can make a huge difference when it comes to the overall look of your house.
4 Things to Consider Before Hiring a Contractor
1. CHECK FOR A LICENSE: Make sure that their company is licensed; always ask for their license number and verify that it is active with the California State Contractors Board at http://www.cslb.ca.gov/ 2. INSURANCE: Ask the contractor if they have liability insurance, and the proper workman’s compensation insurance as well. If a worker is injured on the job without it, they can sue the home owner, and if your home is damaged, you could be left with the bill. Lack of liability insurance can quickly become a nightmare. 3. RECOMMENDATIONS: Check for recommendations and references and see if the work they do satisfies their customers’ expectations and requirements. It is better to go with a company that has a good, long standing relationship within the community. Word of mouth goes a long way! 4. PAYMENTS: Never pay up front for services. By law, contractors can only collect 10% (or a maximum of $1,000) up front. Make sure to ask for a detailed payment schedule and ONLY pay for work that has been completed.

AROUND TOWN L.A. CADA offers hope for families If you are one of the many people with a loved one who uses alcohol or drugs heavily, you are not alone. The worry, heartache and frustration you may feel comes from witnessing self destructive, addictive behavior in someone you care about and feeling helpless. You want them to stop using the substance but they don’t. No matter what you think, it is important to know that you did not cause this behavior and you aren’t able to control it. Once a drug and alcohol abuser becomes an addict, they suffer from a chronic disease. Although they realize they are out of control, they feel overwhelmed by the pain, guilt and self-loathing and might think that there’s no way out. As a result of the disease, they maintain familiar behaviors and block out any physical or emotional pain they may be causing themselves or others. Their brain is malfunctioning which keeps them from any rational thinking or making any effort to do something healthy, responsible or productive.
If you have a loved one who fits this description, please don’t try to take care of or protect them. Encourage them to seek treatment or a support group over and over if necessary. Let them know you believe in their ability to change. Then let go and take care of yourself by creating a support system. You need and deserve help because you have also been affected by their disease. Support groups for family members include: Al-Anon: (888) 425-2666; Nar-Anon (800)477-6291; Families Anonymous (800) 736-9805; and Celebrate Recovery (800) 708-3173. For more information about local treatment options, call Los Angeles Centers for Alcohol and Drug Abuse (L.A. CADA) at (562) 906-2676. L.A. CADA provides a full range of care and can accept many forms of payment, including Medi-Cal and health insurance.

First Christian Church would also like to invite you to explore your spiritual side on a Labyrinth Walk Saturday, August 24 from 5 to 8 p.m. The Labyrinth is centuries old and appears in many religious traditions. The entrance to the Labyrinth Walk will be on the Hadley St. side of the building. PIH Health named 2013 Most Wired award recipient PIH Health was named a 2013 Most Wired award recipient by Hospitals and Health Networks (H&HN), a monthly publication from the American Hospital Association (AHA) on last month. H&HN annually surveys the nation’s healthcare systems on their use of high-tech communications, and its Most Wired status is awarded to innovators in the Information Technology (IT) field. Criteria must be met in all four focus areas in order to be considered: infrastructure, business and administrative management, clinical quality and safety and clinical integration. Over the past several years, PIH Health has invested in the integration of electronic patient records while simultaneously ensuring compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). PIH Health has moved forward to address this issue by utilizing an Enterprise Patient Index (EPI) that seamlessly links patients across its hospital, ambulatory offices and home/hospice care. Future projects include deploying a health information exchange to connect our community physicians, and implementing a patient portal to further engage our patients. “Since 2003, we have aligned our strategic plan to the changing dynamics of healthcare technology,” said Peggy Chulack, chief administrative
officer. “Under this direction, PIH Health’s Information Solutions Department (contracted out to Allscripts) has taken patient care and patient privacy to a new level of efficient, coordinated care.” Health Care’s Most Wired Survey, conducted between January 15 and March 15, 2013, asked hospitals and health systems nationwide to answer questions regarding their IT initiatives. Respondents completed 659 surveys, representing 1,713 hospitals, or roughly 30 percent of all United States hospitals. “This year’s Most Wired organizations exemplify progress through innovation,” said Rich Umbdenstock, president and CEO of the American Hospital Association. “The hospital field can learn ways that IT can help to improve efficiency from these outstanding organizations.” The July H&HN cover story detailing results is available at www.hhnmag. com. PIH Health serves residents of Los Angeles and Orange Counties as well as the San Gabriel Valley area offering a wide range of services including over 150 primary care physicians to provide general medicine and preventative care; access to emergency and urgent care, home health services and hospice; and a network of over 180 specialists in accessible and welcoming neighborhood locations. I remember when I first joined the Chamber about 6 years ago; I was 22 years old and the concept of networking was completely new to me. I was always good at talking to people and making friends, but this was a different caliber of people. I was pretty nervous! From the day I attended my first Wake up Whittier, the Chamber staff was there to welcome me (and everyone else) with the biggest smiles I had ever seen. Fast forward to today, I LOVE the Whittier Chamber! Everyone involved is truly dedicated to helping people grow their business. They take time to get to know their members and it’s amazing to see them go above and beyond to make the events fun, memorable and successful for all who attend. THANK YOU WHITTIER CHAMBER!
