It’s official! The holiday shopping season is here and I want to remind everyone, residents and business owners alike, of the value of shopping locally and using your purchasing power in Whittier. Our city is full of great retail and restaurant options which make it easy to “Shop Whittier” this holiday season. A variety of stores, shops and restaurants can be found on every corner of the city as well as in distinct shopping hot spots like the Whittwood Town Center, the Quad, the Whittier Marketplace and the Uptown S h o p p i n g District. Not only do
Whittier merchants offer a variety of quality shopping choices, but by keeping your shopping dollars within the city, you put money back into your own community. There is a direct correlation between purchases made in Whittier and the services that the City is able to provide its citizens. Street repairs, police services, youth and senior services are only a few of the programs which benefit from increased consumer spending. As residents and business owners, we need to make shopping locally a priority this holiday season. Local businesses return approximately 50% of each dollar spent back to the community. Additionally, local businesses contribute to the community through the “multiplier effect” which states that one dollar spent at a locally owned business will return three to five times that amount back in to the community through city taxes, employee wages and material/supply purchases from other independent businesses. In addition, these same local businesses give back to the community through supporting schools, social services and contributing to local non-profi t organizations. It is pretty

Renting out a home or apartment that you own may result in a tax loss for you, even if the rental income is more than your operating costs. This is because you will be entitled to a depreciation deduction for your cost of the house or apartment (except for the portion allocated to the land). If your tenant is related to you, however, special rules and limitations may apply. (For these purposes “related” means spouse, child
or grandchild, parent or grandparent, and siblings.) Here’s the tax picture: If you rent a home to a relative who (1) uses it as his or her principal residence (that is, not just as a second or vacation home) for the year, and (2) it’s rented at a fair rental (not at a discount), then no limitations apply. You can deduct all the normal rental expenses, even if they result in a rental loss for the year. (If you have a loss, however, it is a “passive” loss, which may be subject to a different set of limitations. Please let me know if you’d like additional information on this topic.) The problem arises if you set the rent below the fair rental value. Since this then becomes a rental property which you are treated as using personally, you would have to allocate the expenses between the personal and rental portions of the year. Even more seriously, however, since all of the rental days (at a bargain rate to a relative) are treated as

personal days, the rental portion is zero. Thus, you would have to report all of the rent you receive in income, but none of your expenses for the home would be deductible. (Actually, you would still be able to deduct the mortgage interest, assuming it otherwise qualifies as deductible, and property taxes. These items are deductible even for non-rental homes.) Given the above, it is important to set the rent at a fair rate. Factors to look at include comparable rentals in the area and whether “side” gifts were made by you to your relative which could be reasonably interpreted to be the bargain element. City Of Whittier
UPDATE
MAYOR'S MESSAGE Bob Henderson
‘Tis the season for holiday parties and gatherings with family, friends and community! On Saturday, December 7, join members of the Whittier City Council and 30,000 of your friends and neighbors from 10 a.m. to noon at the 60th annual Uptown Christmas Parade. This year’s theme is “A Very Uptown Christmas,” which will surely delight the entire family. The parade includes local organizations, children’s sports and cheerleading teams, and marching bands from throughout Los Angeles and Orange Counties. For more information on the Christmas Parade, call the Whittier Uptown Association office at 696-2662 or visit the website at www.whittieruptown.org. Speaking of gatherings with family and friends, if you are hosting a holiday party or would rather not cook Christmas dinner, we are fortunate to have many wonderful restaurants throughout the city to accommodate small to large parties. In fact, several of our local restaurants have private banquet rooms. Whittier is also blessed to have plenty of venues that can accommodate larger groups to meet your entertaining needs. During this holiday season, challenge yourself to Shop Whittier first! Rather than hassling with holiday traffic and crowded malls, save yourself the headache, time and gas by shopping in Whittier. You will likely receive better, more personalized service from one of our local merchants. Another benefit of shopping locally is that a portion of the sales tax goes toward funding
police, parks, and other important city services that make Whittier a great place to live. Join me in welcoming the new Starbucks at the southwest corner of Whittier Boulevard and Colima Road. Expected to open on December 6, the new drive-thru Starbucks will surely come in handy during the busy, hustle and bustle time of the holiday season. Last month, the Planning Commission reviewed plans for another drive-thru Starbucks at the northwest corner of Beverly Boulevard and Norwalk Boulevard. Another project recently reviewed by the Planning Commission is a 76-unit multi-family residential project at the former Mitsubishi site at Whittier Boulevard and Catalina Avenue. Just west from the Mitsubishi site, also on Whittier Boulevard, we’ve heard from Polly’s Pies that they plan on starting reconstruction around the first of the year. In longterm development news, Brookfield Homes continues to make progress at the Fred C. Nelles site. Last month, the environmental impact report (EIR) was initiated. While it may appear like nothing is occurring at the site, these steps are all part of the larger development process and we’re happy to see it continue to move forward. Last month we told you about the city’s new eNewsletter system and this month we’re announcing another new program to increase public information and access to city hall. AccessWhittier will allow you to contact the city 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with your requests, questions, and concerns using your smart phone, tablet or PC. For more information on AccessWhittier, go to the city’s website at www.cityofwhittier.org. W e wish you a wonderful holiday season and prosperous New Year!
Whittier launches mobile phone applications for iPhone, iPad and Android A wide variety of issues, such as potholes that need filling, abandoned shopping carts which need to be pickedup, graffiti that needs removing, street lights out, and property maintenance issues in your neighborhood, can now be reported using iPhone, iPad or Android smart phones, with the launch of Whittier City Hall’s new mobile applications-AccessWhittier. Smart phone users simply open the application, select an issue, take a picture, and tap submit – the application identifies the exact location and sends the issue directly to the appropriate City staff member. The City staff member then addresses the matter, though in some cases the fix or repair for larger items may need to be added to our work program so it is accomplished as funding is available. “Our residents told us they also wanted smart phone convenience with the ability to report issues to us whenever or wherever they prefer,” noted Mayor Bob Henderson. “This technology will improve our efficiency, which is very important with our tight budget,” Henderson added. The GPS and camera features built into the iPhone and Android smart phones make it simple for residents to alert City officials about issues around the clock while they’re mobile. Residents will know their issue went to the right person without ever going to an office or sitting down at a computer or making a phone call during business hours, and
they can also receive status updates on the issue they report. This efficiency allows the City to improve customer service with fewer people on staff. The smart phone applications can be downloaded by searching for “GORequest” in the Apple App store or Google Play store. There is no charge to download the application. AccessWhittier is also available to Windows phones and other mobile devices by browsing a mobile version of the City web site to access services at http://user. govoutreach.com/whittierca/faq. The smart phone application joins the City’s new e-Newsletters and public WiFi system as the latest additions in the City’s efforts to enhance communication, transparency, and efficiency. Residents can register to receive one or all of the City’s E-Newsletters, emailed regularly to update the public on City events and issues. The public wireless network is now active at city hall and allows wireless access in all public areas to help visitors to conduct business at public counters and present information at meetings. “AccessWhittier is another step in the City Council’s efforts to make local government more transparent and efficient,” said Mayor Bob Henderson. “We invite the community to connect with us and report issues they see to keep our community attractive and safe.” More information about AccessWhittier, e-Newsletters, and public Wi-Fi is available at www.cityofwhittier.org and at the City’s IT Division at (562) 567-9870.
Artists, sponsors sought for Whittier street art banners Artists and sponsors are being sought for the 2014 Street Art Banner program by the Whittier Cultural Arts Foundation. The Street Art Banner Program, now in its 11th year, is one of the most popular of Whittier’s art programs and participation by artists who live, work or go to school in Whittier increases each year. The 2014 theme is “The Heart of Whittier.” The banner designs will express how the artists see art in Whittier, what it is about Whittier that inspires them and their perspective of Whittier. This annual art program is co-sponsored by the Whittier Cultural Arts Foundation, the City of Whittier Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department and an Arts Education Partnership Program grant Los Angeles Supervisor Don Knabe. The Street Banner program has the goal of removing art from the gallery and from the museum, and displaying it out in the open for everyone to enjoy as part of their everyday lives. The street banners are seen by many residents, from children walking to school to motorists driving to and from work. Banner submissions must measure 5 inches by 14 inches and the image must be vertically oriented. As the banners will be viewed from a distance of 8 to 30 feet, the use of bright colors is suggested. Inappropriate or obscene language or images are prohibited. The deadline for submission of the banners is 3 p.m. Friday, January 17, 2014. They may be delivered in person or mailed to Erin Hamilton, Community Services Coordinator, Parnell Park, 15390 Lambert Road, Whittier, CA 90604. Late submissions will not be accepted. Banner submissions will be judged by the Whittier Cultural Arts Projects Review Committee. Artists may submit a maximum of two designs. Artists whose designs are selected will receive a vertical banner for the artwork in one of two sizes, 30 inches by 104 inches or 24 inches by 60 inches; however, painting supplies are the responsibility of the artist. The banner will be painted on one side only, using acrylic paint. The deadline to be a street banner sponsor is Friday, December 27. To obtain information about becoming a sponsor, contract Erin Hamilton, Community Services Coordinator, at Parnell Park (562) 567-9450 or ehamilton@cityofwhittier.org. “Businesses, families, schools, churches and community organizations are all invited to sponsor one or more banners,” said Rick Rinaldi, Street Banner Program Chair. “Sponsoring a banner is an excellent way to show community support for the arts in Whittier, as well as providing inexpensive advertising for the sponsors’ business, school, church, organization or even showing a family’s dedication to the arts.” The cost of sponsoring a banner is $150 each. The artist’s work is displayed on one side of the banner, while the other side will display the name or logo of the sponsoring business, family or other group, along with the Cultural Arts Foundation and City of Whittier logos. The completed banners are due by April 18, 2014 and become the property of the City of Whittier. They will be displayed during the months of May, June and July 2014. A reception honoring all of the artists and featuring all of the submitted designs will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 13 at the Whittier City Hall Lobby, 13230 Penn Street.
Whittier City employees Isabel Haro, Staff Assistant (left) and Albert Del Real, Senior Recreation Specialist (center), received Certificates of Commendation from Mayor Bob Henderson (right) at the October 22nd Council meeting. On October 8th, Haro and Del Real, who work at the Parnell Park Senior Center and Community Center, were told by several frantic students in the senior meditation class that another class participant had become lethargic and unresponsive. Haro and Del Real responded immediately and determined that the woman was not breathing and did not have a heartbeat. Haro directed Del Real to call 911, and he also got the Center’s automatic defibrillator. Haro immediately began CPR and was able to resuscitate the student. Paramedics arrived shortly and transported her to the hospital. The student was recently released from the hospital and is now at home resting comfortably

The holiday shopping season is a peak time for crimes such as home and vehicle burglaries, as well as thefts. Residents need to be alert, aware and prepared in order to reduce the risk of becoming a crime victim at home, on the road and while shopping. Criminals know that homes become mini-goldmines as families begin to store holiday gifts. The items most desired by burglars and thieves are also those most desired by intended gift recipients. Small electronics such as phones, tablets, laptops, digital music players, game consoles and various jewelry items will be stored in most homes this month. Residents can better protect their homes by locking doors and windows at all times, and by not displaying gifts and other valuables where they can be seen from a window or a doorway. Store small

Give the gift of Camp Arbolado this holiday Season YMCA Camp Arbolado is a wonderful place that many Whittier residents are familiar with. YMCA Camp Arbolado has touched the lives of tens of thousands of Whittier residents over its 88 year history. You may have attended YMCA Camp Arbolado as a child. You may have sent your son or daughter to camp when they were young. YMCA Camp Arbolado is a place that remains unforgettable to all who have visited. The YMCA of Greater Whittier sends young campers up to YMCA Camp Arbolado five weeks a year. The next camp session is December 27 - January 1. Imagine

City revamps medical-dental trips The former Dial-A-Ride Taxi Voucher Service, which provided out-of-City medical and dental transportation for Dial-A-Ride passengers, has been revamped with a new look, new easier-to-use ride products and a new contractor. “Dial-A-Ride Plus” has been in effect since last month. While the out-of-City medical and dental transportation will still be operated as a separate program, the City’s current Dial-A-Ride contractor, MV Transportation, will be providing the service. “Under this new system, we hope “Dial-A-Ride Plus” will be simpler for our passengers to use, as it will resemble the current Dial-A-Ride system, with which our riders are familiar with,” said Martin Browne, Community Services Manager. “In addition, passengers will only have to call one telephone number, (562) 698-3013, to request either service.” Instead of having to purchase individual paper taxi vouchers, passengers using “DAR Plus” will purchase “Dial-A-Ride Plus” ride cards, similar to the current Dial-ARide cards. The cards will be offered in two dominations: a $12, with 12 $1 value ride boxes printed on it, and a $24 card, with 24 $1 boxes. The new “Dial-A-Ride Plus” program will be used for out-of-city medical and dental trips only, as well as traveling to Rose Hills Memorial Park, which is located in unincorporated Whittier county territory. Any trips taken within the Whittier City limits will be serviced by the regular Dial-A-Ride program. “After a few months of operating this new program, we will review it to see how it is serving our passengers and if – given our existing resources – we can make any changes to provide better service,” Browne said. To qualify for the new transit service, passengers must be currently signed up for the Dial-A-Ride program, which is for City of Whittier residents 60 years and older or for younger riders who have a doctor-certified disability. For more information or to sign up for Dial-A-Ride, contact the Transit Office at (562) 567-9480 or mbrowne@cityofwhittier.org.
wallet, identification card and credit cards secured after every transaction. Sometimes people get so excited about a purchase, they forget to collect these items from the register counter. If you notice any item missing, contact your bank or credit card company immediately to stop any account activity, and then contact the police department. Coordinate shopping trips with a friend if you plan to be out late. Never park your car in an unlit area, no matter how convenient it is. Criminals know that cars parked in shopping centers are likely to contain valuables. Lock your car doors and windows even if you are only gone for a few minutes and NEVER leave shopping bags, purses, backpacks, or any items of value visible through your car windows. Criminals usually walk from car to car
in parking lots, looking for any visible valuables. When they see something they want, they will break the window (they use tools to make that quick and quiet) and take the valuables. Lock items in the trunk, or keep them with you as you go from store to store. Follow the above tips and help reduce crime in our community. Have a safe and joyful holiday season – from the men and women of the Whittier Police Department. Small Business Year-end Review For small business owners the end of the year means more than holiday parties and last minute shopping, it’s also the time to get their business in order for the New Year. While it may be hard for small business owners to step back, reflect and plan for the coming year, doing so can put the business in a better competitive position come January 1st. Many owners get caught up working in their business instead of on it. Following these five tips will put you in a strong position for 2014. No. 1: Be your own worst critic It’s easy to pat your-self on the back and surround yourself with yes men and women, but, successful business men and women share a common trait: the ability to self-analyze. Owners need to honestly ask themselves: did the business have a good year? What went well? What went wrong? And what are potential future opportunities to grow their business? Once they’ve answered these questions it’s time to put in place whatever needs to be done to change or achieve future goals. No 2: Take the time to thank customers Your business is only as good as your customers, which is why small businesses should use the year end as an opportunity to say thank you to its best customers. Thanking every customer who walks through your door or uses your service can be time consuming but thanking those who bring in the profits can be a boon to future business. That small act can provide a huge ROI for your company. Likewise, small businesses should never forget that an upset customer means revenue and/or profit for their competitors.
No 3: Acknowledge your employees Whether you are a three-person shop or 100 strong, it’s a good idea to acknowledge your employees at the end of the year with either a formal or informal review. Not only will it give you an opportunity to address poor performers and reward high performers but it also boosts morale and thus productivity. Employees like to feel appreciated and recognized for their contribution to the success of the business. No 4: Assess the viability of your marketing plan It’s easy to start a marketing campaign at the beginning of the year and then forget about it because you are simply too swamped to worry about it. But blowing it off into a New Year could mean you are missing the opportunity for new revenue. Take a pulse of your marketing plan by asking yourself if the plan is aggressive enough, is it reaching the right audiences and is it bringing in repeat business. Also consider your options and other ways to spend your advertising dollars more effectively. For instance, is your social media efforts really paying off or would you be better off spending your money on a direct mail campaign. Many companies see marketing as an expense but it’s actually an investment and deserves your focused attention. Great marketing plans are created with an objective and results are measured against it. No 5: Have end of year meetings with the accountant, attorney and other advisors Most business owners don’t check in with their accountants until tax time and don’t consult their attorney unless there is a legal issue, but the end of the year is a great time to get the perspective of
your trusted professionals. Their perspective can be extremely valuable to an entrepreneur who has been chained to his or her desk all year. Planning for a future you can’t predict is part of a business owner’s job, and these advisors can help you make smart decisions. Small Business Checklist As we approach the end of the year, it’s time to review the results from this year and start to plan for the next. Here’s a helpful checklist: Things to do before December 31st • Look at your Profit & Loss report. Where do you stand? If you have a larger than expected profit, are there any major purchases you should make now that can be depreciated? Make sure you have the cash. Talk to your accountant if you are not clear of the depreciation rules. • Verify loan accounts and clean them up if necessary. • Verify your 1099 information is setup properly in your accounting system. If you don’t have proper information from each vendor, ask for it now, then create a form to use every year. • Begin to think about year end bonuses or special gifts. Will you give these this year or in January? It depends when you write the check. • Look for fringe benefits you should report on W-2s. Some of these could include health & life insurance, transportation subsidies, moving expense reimbursements, educational reimbursement programs, and employee loans you’ve forgiven. • Take a physical inventory of your products and make adjustments in your accounting system as necessary. • Write a list of all the company’s major
accomplishments for the year. Be prepared to share this with your staff, they will appreciate it. • Write out your goals and plans for the next year. • Create budgets for the next year if you work on a calendar year fiscal basis. • Check all of the links on your website to make sure they are active. After January 1st • Reconcile all accounts – bank and credit cards – in your accounting system. • Verify you’ve made all entries in Petty Cash. If you made the purchases last year, make sure to use that date. • Verify you’ve made all entries for items you’ve paid for with personal funds. • Print year end reports. At a minimum you should have a Profit & Loss Statement and a Balance Sheet. Sorting customer sales figures by total dollars help determine who your largest customers were. • Make depreciation entries (may need help from your accountant). You should have the following information on each item: date of purchase, purchase price, make, model, serial number, year, and whether it is new or used. • Make any adjusting entries for accruals of payroll tax liabilities or pre-paid expenses (get help from your accountant). • Print and mail payroll forms if you do it yourself (W-2, W-3, 940, 941). • Print and mail 1099s to independent contractors (by 1/31). Don’t wait in case there is an error. • Print and mail 1096 to IRS (by 2/28).

Which TV or movie character would you like to go in business with? Does a TV commercial count? How about "The Most Interesting Man in the World"- seems like he could move a lot of mountains to make things happen!
What is one thing your employees would be surprised to know about you? Since they know me so well, this might not surprise them, but growing up, I was a big Trekkie. After school, I tuned into Sci-Fi to watch the original Star Trek series. Did you know that they even had Star Trek trading cards? Well, now you do! I never did make it to a convention, though...
If you could spend time traveling where would you be? Southeast Asia is next on my list (I'm going to Cambodia in January, actually), but I will always love to spend time in European Cathedrals - I'm always amazed by them as engineering marvels, and the rich theology of worship they are designed to reflect.
What is your favorite local business? From strictly a consumer perspective, I’ll have to say The Bottle Room- their burgers are incredibly creative, and their variety of liquid compliments is the most impressive I’ve seen locally.
If you had a sandwich named after you, what would it have in it? "The Tanner" - Turkey, Roast Beef, Extra-Extra Avocado, Blue Cheese Dressing, spinach and arugula, grilled onions, and grilled corn in a Squaw roll. If I'm feeling really lucky... maybe I'd toss a fried egg on top!
What’s the best part of your day? At my core, I’m a connector and a learner. By favorite moments are when I get to teach a team member or a client something new that changes their future.

9 ways to go green for the holidays Do piles of crumpled wrapping paper make you cringe? Do you pity the poor spruce that was sacrificed for the seasonal celebration? If you’re struggling with holiday wastefulness, here are a few suggestions from consumer expert Andrea Woroch on how to go green without going overboard. 1. No Paper Trail Sometimes gift giving is a risky endeavor. There’s always the possibility your judgment of sizing and style doesn’t match with the recipient. Luckily, returns are an option as long as you keep the receipt. If you don’t want the long paper printouts, ask about a digital receipt. Many locations of popular stores such as Gap, Nordstrom and Sears have this option available and will email your receipt instead. 2. Cut the Consumption According to the experts at Carnegie Mellon University, shopping online consumes less energy than shopping in-store approximately 80 percent of the time. 3. The Plastic Alternative With gift cards being the most requested holiday present again this year, a lot of PVC is going to wind up in landfills. However, Earthworks is doing its best to keep that from happening. Send them your empty plastic gift cards and they’ll make sure they get recycled.
4. Receive and Give Everyone knows it’s better to give than receive, especially when you don’t have to spend any money doing it. Since a recent CreditDonkey survey found 83 percent of respondents are okay with regifting, you might as well have at it. A regift means less wasted packaging, prevents a trip to the store and keeps more cash in your pocket. 5. Recirculate If you’re lacking in regiftable items, you can still put presents back in circulation shopping for hidden treasures at thrift stores. Not only does this method prevent unnecessary waste, your purchase often contributes to a worthy charitable cause. 6. Alternative Wrapping Environmentalism aside, do you ever really feel good about paying for a roll of paper you know will wind up in the trash almost instantly? It’s unlikely your present won’t be accepted because it’s not ornately wrapped, so look to other alternatives you can repurpose. Newspaper is always an easy option, and some even prefer the look of gifts wrapped with a brown paper bag. 7. Online Options Everything important can be sent electronically these days, and Christmas cards are no exception. Save
time and paper by creating custom cards online. 8. Shop Selectively As a consumer, you have the power to choose where you want to spend your money. If environmental impact is a top concern, consider Newsweek’s list of the Greenest Retail Companies in the U.S. You won’t have to go out of your way to shop at some of the top-ranked stores. 9. Think Outside the Box Depending on how your family celebrates, a holiday get together can result in a large surplus of empty bottles and cans. It’s smart to bring an extra plastic recycling bin so there’s no confusion as to where empties go. Andrea Woroch is a nationally-recognized consumer and money-saving expert who helps consumers live on less without radically changing their lifestyles. She has been featured among top news outlets such as Good Morning America, NBC’s Today, MSNBC, New York Times, Kiplinger Personal Finance, CNNMoney and many more. Nearly one-third (32 percent) of the workers who participated in the survey said they called in sick when not actually ill. Assistance League of Whittier Participates in the “National Make a Difference Day”
The Whole Child will present its “Birth to Five Center” program targeting infants & toddlers, ages 0-5 who are identified as high risk for abuse and/ or neglect, as well as those at high risk of adversity due to special needs. The grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, December 12th, 2013 at 4 p.m. at 12225 Beverly Blvd. in Whittier. The expanded services will also include services for parents who suffer from mental health issues and/or substance abuse. The creation of the “Birth to Five Center” was made possible by a generous grant from the BCM Foundation and First 5 LA. “It is only through the philanthropic support of generous donors such as the BCM Foundation and First 5 LA that The Whole Child can expand critically needed services to at-risk children,” said Charlene Dimas-Peinado, CEO, The Whole Child. “We are grateful for their forward thinking and vision to protect those most vulnerable.” The second location is at Whittier High School – Integrated School Health Center. Lions Clubs International is the largest service club organization in the world. Its 1.35 million members in more than 46,000 clubs are serving communities in 207 countries and geographical areas around the globe. The Lions’ Club motto is “We Serve,” and so far this year they have participated in the Concerts in the Park series at Parnell Park and hosted a semiannual Rummage Sale. On October 4th and 5th the Lions teamed up with local Boy Scout Troop 958 once again at Popular Community Bank, East Whittier Branch, to collect donations in support of their White Cane Day Campaign. Proceeds from these events go back to East Whittier District students in need of eye glasses. The East Whittier Lions also support a program called Outstanding Freshmen where we recognize local high school students for their academic achievements. Upcoming events include service at the Cold Weather Shelter at the Whittier Church of God, the annual Children’s Christmas Breakfast and a Comedy Night fundraiser. The Club meets at 7 a.m. every Friday at Mimi’s Café in the Whittwood Town Center. SPIRITT Family Services thanks contributors On Friday, November 1, 2013, SPIRITT Family Services hosted a memorable fundraiser event honoring the Whittier Police Department, Los Angeles County Juvenile Court Judge Michael Nash, and the Mariachi Divas for their contributions to strengthening families and communities. Approximately 175 guests arrived at Town Center Hall in the City of Santa Fe Springs to hear the sounds of the talented Mariachi Divas and enjoy food and wine samplings from a variety of restaurants located in Whittier and the San Gabriel Valley. The pinnacle of the event was the heartfelt testimonial of a family that shared how SPIRITT helped them through a challenging time. The father, standing alongside his wife and children, relayed that SPIRITT taught them how to communicate with one another and love each other in a healthier way. The 14 year-old daughter thanked SPIRITT for providing her with a “new family.” The event raised funds to support and sustain prevention and treatment programs for children, youth and families. It could not have been a success without all of the contributions from local individuals and restaurants. A special thank you to the following restaurants for adding to the fun and success of the evening by contributing food and/or donation items for the
