Everything’s coming up roses for local florist; Shannon G’s Flowers celebrates 10th year in business

8158 Painter Avenue Whittier, CA 90602

Presort Std. US Postage PAID Whittier, CA Permit No. 1

Incoming Whittier Chamber president Shannon Gimbel knows just what it takes to keep a small business thriving in Whittier: support from friends and family and plenty of hard work! Shannon always knew she wanted to run her own business one day in her hometown of Whittier, and shortly after graduating from La Serna High School, she put her business plan into action. While pursuing her psychology degree at the University of California Irvine, Shannon found herself working out of her kitchen putting together floral arrangements for friends’ weddings and organizing special events for her sorority. She enrolled in floral design classes after graduation and was on her way to building the foundation for what was soon to become Shannon G’s Flowers. Her

once small beginning quickly blossomed into a full-service flower shop that is now celebrating its 10th year. What makes this flower shop even more special is the staff working behind the scenes. Shannon’s whole family has been a huge part of the success of her business. Not only do mom Maxine and grandmother Sheila work side-by-side with Shannon each day, but Shannon’s dad Mike and her fiancé Gerald are quick to lend a helping hand making deliveries on busy weekends and holidays. Shannon’s sister Kim and brother-in-law Derek also live nearby, so its not a surprise to find Shannon’s two adorable nieces visiting their auntie at the shop. “The opportunity I have to work with my family every day makes it all so worth it,” says Shannon. “I know I couldn’t do it

without the love and support from each of them. I’m definitely a lucky girl!” After being a member of the National Charity League for many years, Shannon also understands the importance of giving back to your community. Not only has she gotten involved with a number of local organizations, but Shannon G’s Flowers became a member of the Whittier Chamber of Commerce before the shop even opened its doors! In addition to chairing events like the annual Boys & Girls Club of Whittier gala and the Chamber’s Hathaway Golf Classic, Shannon currently serves on both the Whittier Community Foundation and the Boys and Girls Club of Whittier board, and will be installed as the Whittier Chamber’s 100th president in April. Shannon specializes in weddings, showers, corporate events and day-today flowers arrangements. She also offers party planning and wedding coordination services, as well as a worldwide flower delivery system allowing her to serve clients all over. “I am very passionate about my work. When working with clients and soon-to-be brides, I always treat each event as if it were my own.” In keeping up with the trends, Shannon G’s is sure to offer something for everyone. The shop carries a variety

of boutique items including soaps and candles, jewelry, purses, scarves, stuffed animals, frames, etc., and baby items like socks, blankets and clothes. Shannon will soon introduce a new chic clothing boutique inside the flower shop which will carry blouses, sweaters, jackets, dresses and pants, all at affordable prices ranging from $15 and up. Shannon G’s Flowers is also a one-stop-shop for Valentine’s Day offering chocolates, stuffed animals, balloons, plant arrangements, orchid arrangements, roses, mixed florals and more for your special someone. Special Valentine’s Day packages start at only $29.95. Mention this article to receive a FREE Valentine’s gift with purchase, while supplies last. “I am proud to be involved in this community and so thankful for the support I continue to receive from the City, the Chamber, my family and friends. With our 10 year celebration going on, serving as president of the Whittier Chamber in its 100th year and my very own wedding coming up in May, 2014 is by far the best year yet!” Shannon G’s Flowers is located at 14748 E. Whittier Blvd. and is open Monday through Saturday and Sundays by appointment only. To set up a consultation for your special event or order your next flower arrangement, call (562) 789-5808 or visit www.shannongsflowers.com.

In fact, one of the best sources of new business is a referral from a satisfied customer. Customers say referrals are of the utmost importance in determining who they buy from and what they buy. Research shows that over 70% of online shoppers read reviews before buying and up to 45% of most service businesses are chosen by customers based on the recommendations of others. Being able to gain new business from existing customers through referrals is a surefire way to help your business grow. While interacting with a customer it is important to keep in mind the importance of word of mouth as you focus on making their buying process effective and enjoyable – before, during, and even after the sale. Referrals are how our member businesses thrive and grow. The staff of the Whittier Chamber gives out hundreds of referrals each month. The student must be a member of your household under a written agreement between you and an organization to implement a program of the organization to provide educational opportunities for students in private homes. The organization must be a charitable organization, war veterans organization, or domestic fraternal lodge. It cannot be a government agency. If you qualify, you can deduct your expenses for hosting the student, limited to $50 for each full calendar month of qualification. (A month in which the student qualifies for at least 15 days counts as a full month.) Expenses include amounts you pay to insure the student’s well being and to further his education, e.g., expenses for books, tuition, food, clothing, transportation, medical and dental care, and recreation. You cannot include costs you would incur in any event, such as for insurance, repairs, taxes, or mortgage interest on your home. You also cannot include amounts for depreciation, or for the value of lodging or any services you provide the student. And if you receive any payment (partial or full) as compensation or reimbursement for your costs, no

deduction is available. While it is common to refer to a student taken into your home as an “exchange” student, in fact, if the student is foreign and the arrangement is under a mutual exchange program under which a child of yours lives with a family in a foreign country, the deduction isn’t allowed. In connection with this deduction you must keep records of your qualifying expenses. You also have to attach a copy of the agreement with the sponsoring organization to your tax return, as well as a summary of the expenses paid for the student and a statement as to (i) the date he became a member of your household, (ii) the school’s name and location, and (iii) the student’s period of attendance. Note that since the student is in the U.S. only temporarily, he generally isn’t considered a U.S. resident and therefore you can’t claim him as a dependent on your return. MAYOR'S MESSAGE Bob Henderson

Congratulations to the Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce for another successful business expo! The appropriately themed “Back to the Future” Business Expo, during the Chamber’s centennial year, was undoubtedly the best yet! With an estimated attendance of 1,000 business and community members, the expo provided an opportunity for business owners to showcase their goods and services in a fun atmosphere. The Chamber staff, Board of Directors and the many volunteers who assisted in organizing the event are appreciated for working tirelessly on ensuring an exciting and valuable event for the entire community. If you were not able to attend, make sure to mark your calendars for next year’s in January! Later this month you are invited to attend the annual Silver Shield Awards Banquet honoring the men and women of the Whittier Police Department. The event is an opportunity to thank the Police officers and all the staff at the Whittier PD for doing a superb job in maintaining a safe community for us all to enjoy. The Whittier City Council and Whittier Chamber Board of Directors look forward to seeing many of you at the event on Friday, February 28 at the Pacific Palms Conference Center. Call the Chamber office at (562) 698-9554 for more information or to purchase a ticket. This year is guaranteed to be a great year for development around the city. Polly’s Pies is well underway with

their remodel and soon we will be able to go back and enjoy their delicious food and, of course, the pies! The former Arby’s restaurant, located just across the corner from Polly’s Pies, was recently sold. The new owner is hoping that by June, Whittier residents will be able to boast of having the first Dunkin’ Donuts in Southern California. Don’t worry if donuts aren’t your thing and you prefer something with more spice—how about some buffalo wings? Tenant improvement plans for a new Buffalo Wild Wings have been submitted to the city. The new restaurant will be located at the former Nickel Nickel site at the Whittwood Town Center. With all this yummy food, you’ll be happy to learn that your gym options will be expanding with LA Fitness coming to Whittier also. Finally, on the west end of town, dust will be flying at Beverly Boulevard and Norwalk Boulevard/Workman Mill Road as a new drive-thru Starbucks is built. Did you know March is National Red Cross month? You are invited to join the City, Chamber and our local Rio Hondo Chapter of the American Red Cross on February 27th for a free business seminar on Continuity Planning: Emergency Preparedness for Businesses. Most businesses have a business plan, some have a marketing plan, but too few have a continuity plan. Attend the seminar to learn how to prepare yourself, your business and your employees for an emergency or disaster. The seminar will be held at the Whittier Central Library from 8:30 to 10 a.m. on February 27. Call the Chamber at (562) 698-9554 or City Hall at (562) 567-9320 to RSVP as space is limited. February 14 is Valentine’s Day; take the opportunity to visit one of Whittier’s newest restaurants such as the The Rusty Monk or Portsmouth in Uptown, or Dakara Sushi on Whittier Boulevard and Mills Avenue!

The City of Whittier, Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce and the Whittier Public Library present a FREE Business Seminar:

Continuity Planning: Emergency Preparedness for Businesses February 27, 2014 8:30 to 10 a.m. Whittier Central Library 7344 Washington Ave., Whittier 90602 Most businesses have a business plan, some have a marketing plan, but very few have a continuity plan. Is your business prepared for an emergency? If you are like most business owners then the answer is probably no, you’re not as prepared as you’d like to be. It can be difficult to know where to begin and where to go from there. Business continuity planning will help your business and your bottom line. Can your business bounce back from the impact of an earthquake, wild fire, or severe weather storm? According to the American Red Cross, an estimated 40% of businesses do not reopen following a major disaster. Building a continuity plan and taking proactive steps toward preparedness will reduce this risk and ensure continuation of services. Owning or managing a business leaves little time to devote to planning ahead for a disaster. But everything

from a natural catastrophe to a power outage or storeroom flood could force a business to close its doors. And anything that disrupts operations can mean big trouble for the bottom line. Disasterrelated service interruptions cost your business money and customers. Attend this seminar to learn what you need to do to reduce the potential for loss, should disaster strike, and reopen quickly should you be forced to close. This creates savings for your business and also benefits your employees and customers who rely on your business being open. Join us as the Rio Hondo Chapter of the American Red Cross kicks off national Red Cross month (March 2014) with this informative and ever important topic of preparedness. Space is limited; call the Whittier Chamber at (562) 698-9554 or City at (562) 567-9320 to RSVP.

Ten-four tips: Avoiding crime in the new year by Captain Michael Davis

During 2013, violent crime showed a decrease in Whittier, but that is no reason to let your guard down when it comes to avoiding becoming a victim in 2014. Make no mistake about it, criminals are still working hard to take away your money and valued possessions. Vigilance coupled with taking simple steps throughout your day will help reduce your chances of being targeted by criminal activity. The most prominent property crimes in our geographical area in 2013 were car burglaries and thefts from vehicles. A high percentage of reported car burglaries and thefts from vehicles involved the loss of valuable items that were left in plain view by owners while away from their vehicles. Items such as purses, laptops, cell phones, designer sunglasses, GPS units, backpacks and packages were left on seats, floorboards or on the dash. In many of the cases, criminals broke the window or punched the door lock and stole the items. In other cases, owners left car doors unlocked, which made it very easy for criminals to obtain their loot. You can avoid becoming a victim by NEVER leaving any items in plain view while away from your vehicle. This includes phone chargers, spare

change and miscellaneous paperwork that may invite a criminal to break your window in search of more items. While we saw a minor decrease in residential burglaries for 2013, these types of burglaries continue to have a profound impact on the homeowner, family and the entire neighborhood. In addition to the loss of personal possessions and private documents, the psychological effects of having your privacy violated in our most safe place can last for a long time. Unlike what movies and TV may portray, the majority of residential burglaries occur during the daytime, not at night while residents are inside the house. Residential burglars look for the least challenging location when selecting a target and may or may not view it for a while before breaking in. An open side gate, open windows and overgrown shrubbery are all invitations for criminals to easily access your home. Many burglars will knock on the door to make sure no one is home and then either gain access by prying or kicking the front door, or will make their way to the side or back of the house for undetected access. The use of an alarm system and the conspicuous posting of alarm company stickers and

signs throughout the exterior may deter a criminal from taking a chance of a loud alarm alerting nearby neighbors. There are very inexpensive wireless doit-yourself alarm kits sold online and in home improvement stores that can help protect your home. Robbery is a violent crime where force or fear is used to obtain property from the victim. Pedestrians are an easy target for robbers on streets and in parking lots. As with burglaries, criminals look for an easy target. They size up weaknesses in potential victims and always examine the person for visible valuable items. With the proliferation of smart phones, iPad, iPod, and other small and handheld valuable electronics, criminals do not need to go far to find potential victims with headphones on. Such victims will never hear the criminal coming. When in parking lots and on the street, STAY ALERT, walk confidently and avoid displaying those items that robbers can easily grab. Remember that life is much more important than property – during a robbery be smart and avoid fighting with a suspect to protect property. Lastly, fraud, identity theft and unauthorized computer access continues

to impact victims for a long time after the crime is detected. Make sure to change your passwords frequently, using letters, numbers and symbols when composing your passwords. Also, shred all bills and mail with your personal information and make sure to SECURE YOUR HOME OR BUSINESS WIRELESS INTERNET CONNECTION AND NETWORK. An unsecured wireless connection will open the door for criminals to access your system for the purpose of theft and fraudulent activity. Most importantly, never think twice before calling the police when you see or hear something suspicious. As I speak with people in the community, I sometimes hear “I didn’t want to bother you guys with something that small,” or “I know you have bigger things to deal with.” In our view, small things lead to big things and suspicions many times lead to the capture of criminals – so please, call us anytime and we’ll be glad to assist! If you would like additional crime prevention information, please visit www.cityofwhittier.org/depts/police/. Michael Davis is a Captain with the Whittier Police Department and can be reached at (562) 567-9253 or via email at mdavis@cityofwhittier.org.

Police memorial highway dedicated to fallen officers On a drizziling, cloudy morning, T h u r s d a y, D e c e m b e r 1 9 , 2 0 1 3 , approximately 100 City officials, retired and current police officers and civilian employees and the general public met on the grassy median at Whittier Boulevard and Mar Vista Street to honor two fallen Whittier police officers at the unveiling of the Whittier Officers Mike Lane and John Pierce Memorial Highway. The Memorial Highway stretches along the entire length of Whittier Boulevard, with signs posted at Mar

Vista Street and Costa Glen Avenue. Although the day began cloudy, later in the afternoon, a double rainbow arched over the sign, as if in tribute to the two detectives. “Detectives Lane and Pierce were both killed in the line of duty, working to keep our City safe, and we felt this was a fitting tribute to these two fine examples of what being a Police Officer is all about,” said Whittier Police Chief Jeff Piper, who along with the City of Whittier and the Whittier Police Officers’

Association supported this effort. The Police Officers’ Association paid for the two signs. “We pay tribute to Mike Lane and John Pierce through a powerful expression of honor, fellowship and sympathy by the erection and dedication of two memorial signs to be unveiled shortly,” Piper said. In speaking during the unveiling ceremony, Mayor Bob Henderson said, “Whittier’s police officers provide outstanding service to the community. Every morning when they put on their uniform and report to work, they put their lives on the line to keep the rest of us safe. In carrying out the duties they are sworn to perform, some officers make the ultimate sacrifice.” “Two of Whittier’s finest officers did not come home at the end of their shifts,” Henderson said. “Detective John Lawrence Pierce and Detective Michael Lee Lane, gave their lives protecting the citizens of Whittier.” “As an agency and family, our utmost commitment is to ensure their memory and sacrifice never fades or is forgotten,” Piper said. “Past and present officers understand the courage to do this job. Mike and John died as they lived – committed to duty. So today, the unveiling of the memorial signs is yet another way to pay tribute to our two fallen heroes and a constant reminder to never forget.”

On September 21, 1976, while working an undercover investigation regarding the sale of narcotics, Pierce sustained serious injuries. These injuries ultimately resulted in his death on May 18, 1977. On December 13, 1979, Lane was working undercover on a motorcycle theft investigation. When shots were exchanged, he sustained fatal injuries. “These two heroic officers were killed in the line of duty while protecting the community against dangerous criminals,” Henderson said. “They will never be forgotten.” Lane and Pierce were also honored by the Whittier Police Memorial, donated to the City by the Whittier Community Foundation and pays tribute to all of Whittier’s police force, past and present. The Police Memorial stands in front of the new Police Station and was dedicated in 2011.

Local restaurants show support for California High School’s ACE Program C a l i f o r n i a H i g h S c h o o l ’s A C E (Academic Community for Enrichment) Program was created to serve freshmen who may have struggled during junior high in the areas of academics, attendance or behavior. The freshmen in this program have all expressed a desire to improve their performance and be successful in high school. The students were chosen to participate in ACE based on their needs, as well as their potential to achieve. Each spring, teachers in this program coordinate with local businesses to reward students for their outstanding first semester accomplishments. Veracruz Family Restaurant and Rockie’s Frozen Yogurt have played a part in this effort by offering discounted rates to the group of students and teachers as they enjoy lunch followed by dessert. About four years ago when this incentive began, only about a dozen students took part in the reward. This year, student achievement has reached an all-time high and approximately 40 students earned the privilege of attending the recent lunch in January. Physician Determines Length of Time Off for Pregnancy Disability Leave Our employee has told us she wants to take her Pregnancy Disability Leave (PDL) starting a month before her due date, and for three months afterward. She will be leaving at a very busy time for our business. Do we have to accommodate her request? PDL protects a woman’s job and benefits for up to four months to have a child, but when a woman takes PDL, the determinative factor is when her doctor says she’s disabled by her pregnancy, not when she “wants” to take the time off.

for Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the leave interaction becomes more complicated. The federal family leave runs at the same time as the PDL; however, the state family leave, California Family Rights Act (CFRA), does not recognize pregnancy as a disability, and therefore it doesn’t run until after the woman is released from PDL by her doctor. At that time, she can take CFRA for up to 12 weeks for baby bonding time. This highlights the importance of determining the end of PDL. Employers who allow PDL to run for the four-month maximum Time Needed Varies Typically, a doctor will place a woman will end up offering a seven-month leave on disability for her pregnancy anywhere of absence, when the employee may have from two to four weeks before her due been legally entitled to much less. date, and an additional six weeks after ‘Leave Interaction’ Chart a normal delivery, or eight weeks after a This is a very simple explanation of caesarian. F I N A N C I A L U P DAT E Understanding Hedge Fund Styles

Douglas M. Rowan, CFP®, CMFC, AIF®

Hedge funds are a diverse class of investments that use aggressive investment strategies to seek greaterthan-average risk adjusted total return.1 Hedge funds may use many investment tactics not ordinarily available to the managers of regulated mutual funds, including unlimited short-selling, margin trading to leverage price movements, and the unfettered use of derivatives as direct investment vehicles. There are over 8,000 hedge funds. The multitude of recognized hedge fund investment styles and variants may appear confusing to the uninitiated. However, you may find it much simpler to think of funds as falling into one of four major groupings: event driven, market neutral, multinational, and niche. •E v e n t - d r i v e n f u n d s f o l l o w investment strategies designed to profit from a known or forecasted event, such as distressed securities and merger and value opportunities. • Market neutral funds generally attempt to neutralize investors’ exposure to significant changes in portfolio value caused by market risk. These funds divide their

assets among investments with complementary risk characteristics so that any force that drives some portfolio assets in one direction will drive other portfolio assets in the opposite direction. • Multinational funds invest in non-U.S. stocks and bonds using strategies such as fundamentals and technical indicators, global macroeconomic or financial market trends, and top-down and bottom-up considerations. • Niche funds follow narrowly defined styles, including sectors, shortselling, and market timing. They can also invest in listed futures and options to benefit from expected trends in commodity prices, interest rates, or currency exchange markets. Fund of Hedge Funds Through a fund of hedge funds, investors can gain access to a number of hedge funds with a relatively smaller investment. For example, investing in five hedge funds with $1 million minimums would require $5 million. Investing in a fund of hedge funds that invests in those same underlying funds may require less. Factors to Consider When considering the differences among these styles you should also keep in mind other common terms relating to hedge fund investing. • Individual risks include bankruptcy, the effects of competition, and changes in technology, among other things.

• Market risks indicate the possibility that an entire broad category of assets will gain or lose value simultaneously. • The value of a hedge fund’s assets can sometimes be difficult to ascertain. As some hedge funds invest in highly illiquid securities, they may be hard to value. • Hedge funds do have higher fees than many other investments. • Many hedge funds restrict the opportunities to redeem shares and often impose a “lock up” period of one year or more after your initial investment.

If you are contemplating the use of a hedge fund in your portfolio, consider that hedge funds are complex investments with limited liquidity compared with stocks and bonds or mutual funds. Work with your financial professional to determine whether they may be right for you.

Breakthrough Treatment Now Available In Whittier

Whittier, CA - Imagine forty years ago if you were told that lasers would replace scalpels in surgery or that robotic instruments would build cars; you may not have believed it. By the same token, would you believe that chiropractic treatments could be performed using a special hand-held instrument developed by NASA scientists; all while you were sitting in an upright position without any turning or twisting movements? According to Dr. Yani Feliciano, “This new form of computerized treatment is so gentle and effective, that it truly amazes even the most skeptical patients. It’s called the ProAdjuster and is the latest, state-of-theart technology in existence today, and the only one in Whittier.” The ProAdjuster can safely and gently analyze and treat the spine and other joints to remove the nerve impingement that is often the cause of pains in the low back, neck, shoulder and elsewhere in the body. It also works on a variety of muscular conditions to loosen tight muscles with ease and comfort. Many patients say that it’s like getting a mini-massage. Even patients with knee, hip and foot problems such as plantar fascitis are being helped. It is also covered by most insurance companies including medicare. Testimonial: Hear what our members are saying... In 2013, Quality Lift & Equipment decided to really “step up” its marketing/networking efforts. We were already members of the Whittier Chamber, but we weren’t sure of the real benefits that being a chamber member could bring until we really got involved. Over the course of the past year, we have become more engaged in the chamber by attending Wake Up Whittier, ribbon cuttings and the Shop Local Showcase, and I even became an ambassador. Becoming more involved in the Whittier Chamber of Commerce is the perfect way to be visible within the community. I am sure it’s been said before, but to be successful in networking you need to be present; just joining the Chamber isn’t enough. Send someone to represent your company at events, volunteer for the golf tournament, participate in sponsorship opportunities (even in the smallest way). Being more active and getting your company name out there through Whittier Chamber events will help you become a more credible and successful business.

SoCalGas calls for energy conservation as winter cold puts heavy demand on natural gas supply Recent record cold weather across the United States has placed a strain on natural gas supplies. SoCalGas is asking customers to take simple precautionary steps to conserve natural gas to help ensure supplies are sufficient to meet demands created by this severe winter. “We know a typical home’s natural gas use for heating increases, sometimes up to three times more, during colder months. SoCalGas is asking our customers to conserve energy to help ensure we have enough natural gas supply to get us through this cold weather,” said Rodger Schwecke, Vice President of Customer Solutions for SoCalGas.

SoCalGas advises the following energy conservation tips: • Use extra blankets and sweaters to stay warm and lower your furnace thermostat by three to five degrees (health permitting). This can save up to 30 percent on heating costs. • Limit use of non-essential gas appliances, fireplaces and spas. • Reduce your water heating usage: use less hot water, turn down the water heater thermostat or insulate your water heater. • For additional conservation tips, visit SoCalGas.com

heating their homes to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning: • Never use your oven, range or outdoor grill to heat your home because these appliances are not designed for this purpose and can emit dangerous carbon monoxide • Install a CO detector or change the batteries in your CO detectors regularly.

Symptoms of CO poisoning can include unexplained nausea, headaches, drowsiness, mental confusion and flulike symptoms. If you suspect that you or a loved one is suffering from CO SoCalGas also encourages customers poisoning, call 911 immediately. to follow these important safety tips when

Thank you to 3G Bikes in Whittier for paying it forward! For those of you who don’t know local celeb Danny Martin, you may have seen him riding his bike and waving through town with his American flag on the back and a big smile on his face. Whittier photographer Ashley French recently documented the friendly bike rider in a special photo project which was displayed at the Whittier City Hall. After showcasing his worn bicycle in many of her photos, she decided to approach owner Gary Silva with 3G Bike Shop to see if he would be interested in making a special donation to Danny. A year later, Gary and his staff at 3G bikes, along with Ashley and other friends and family, presented an unsuspecting Danny with his very own custommade 3 wheel bicycle complete with pedal and hand brakes, a back rest, a beautiful wooden deck, top of the line tires and a BRAND NEW American flag. Thank you to Gary Silva and his amazing crew, and thank you to Ashley French for coordinating the donation for our pal Danny!
