Nelles Design Plans Approved By City Council The Whittier City Council approved Brookfield’s design plans for its project at the now-closed Nelles property during a public hearing on January 24. The unanimous vote represents the last major City approval necessary for the plan to move forward. The Chamber of Commerce has been a strong advocate for this project due to the many public benefits the plan will provide the City and the business community. “This project presents a good balance between residential, commercial, open space and preservation. We believe it will create jobs for our community, enhance the west side of Whittier, and create a natural flow into our Uptown shopping district,” stated Chamber Board President Chris Hardeman from DialMed Home Care. Project implementation will result in new shops and more than $40
million per year in retail spending, an estimated $3 million to improve local parks, preservation of historic resources, and a variety of new home choices. Brookfield has expressed confidence that the remaining lawsuits challenging the project will be successfully resolved and groundbreaking ceremonies could take place later this year. While there is still work to be done, including the City’s Design Review Board evaluating the exterior elevations of the residential buildings, the January 24 vote was a significant milestone. The approved project includes 750 homes, and 150,000 square feet of commercial space, walking trails and parks. At no cost to taxpayers, historic resources at the property including the Chapels Building, Superintendent’s Residence, Assistant to the Superintendent’s Residence and the
Administration building will be restored, repurposed and incorporated into the project’s design. “This cohesive community plan is designed to stand the test of time and
pay homage to the area’s history while adding a vibrant new economic engine for the City and residents of Whittier,” said Marc Huffman, Vice President of Planning for Brookfield.

Nominations sought for Community Service Award Honoring individuals for their outstanding service to the cities of Whittier and Santa Fe Springs will be the focal point of the 19th Annual Silver Shield Awards Banquet being held on Friday, March 10 at the Pacific Palms Resort in the City of Industry. The Silver Shield Awards Ceremony will highlight the accomplishments and outstanding efforts of active officers, civilian staff and volunteers and pay tribute to the Whittier Police Department as they celebrate their Centennial year. Awards will be given in multiple categories to deserving individuals and retirees will be honored for their service to our community. “This year’s program will recognize the unique men and women of the Whittier Police Department and the extraordinary things they have done this past year to protect the cities of Whittier and Santa Fe Springs,” stated Community Relations Officer John Scoggins. The Silver Shield event is designed to give businesses and individuals the opportunity to say thank you to our police department.
Again this year is the chance for residents and business owners to nominate an officer who has gone above and beyond the call of duty to help. Nominations can be sent to info@whittierchamber.com and must include your contact information, the name of the officer(s) and a brief description of the incident or event. The Silver Shield committee will select an officer from the submitted nominations and he or she will be presented with a Community Service Award at the event. This year ’s event will feature a police expo inside the beautiful ballroom at the Pacific Palms Resort. Musical entertainment will once again be provided by Ernie Hernandez from Calendar Entertainment and photography by Tom Guerrero of Say Cheese Photography. “It is an honor for the Whittier Chamber to host this special event again this year,” stated Chamber Board President Chris Hardeman from DialMed Home Care. “We are proud of our partnership with the Whittier Police Department and it is our privilege to coordinate this event to highlight all that they do
for our community on a daily basis,” he explained. The Whittier Police Department provides a variety of law enforcement services to the citizens of Whittier and Santa Fe Springs. The Department is comprised of the Patrol, Investigation, Support Services and Administration Divisions. The Police Department features a great team comprised of 120 sworn police officers and 50 civilian staff. One of the outstanding programs developed by the WPD is the highly successful Community Based Policing Program. A cornerstone of this model program is a partnership between the Police Department, city residents and businesses to produce a high quality of life for all citizens. “The Police Department’s relationship with the Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce and the surrounding business community is one that is strong and respected. This relationship enables our department to serve our citizens and has bolstered the partnership that drives effective enforcement efforts. Continued on page 13

February 2017 is the month of love and clean up. That’s right, cleanup… Whittier and surrounding communities have been blessed with much-needed rain over the past several weeks. Our hillsides, yards and trees are drinking more heavily than they have in years. There is, however, a downside to all this water—the required cleanup. I bet many of us didn’t know we had openings in our roofs or walls until the water started leaking in. In some cases it may call for minor repairs, and in more extreme cases, it may require a call to Chamber members SERVPRO or Qwikresponse, whose team offers water cleanup and restoration services.
Dr. Solar & Roofing can help fix it. Unfortunately, the rain doesn’t just limit itself to leaky roofs. It contributes to minor issues too, like dirty windows. Let’s keep Don’s Window Cleaning, where perfection is a must, and Southland Window Cleaning, busy for the next few months while they clean every Whittier window this storm has dirtied. Let’s face it, dirty windows may deter customers and most of us don’t have the ability to reach all of them. Let’s make our city sparkle one window at a time! One last thing, trees. Our trees got a great drink of water recently, but if they are looking a little too big and leafy, call California Arborist to give them a haircut or to discuss alternative planting options. Now, let’s talk about L-O-V-E. If you have someone special in your life and would like to do a little romancing this Valentine’s Day, get working on it now! How the homesale exclusion applies to a residence used for residential and business (nonresidential) purposes or to produce rental income
Richard Scrivanich As you know, an individual can exclude up to $250,000 ($500,000 for certain joint filers) of the gain from the sale of his principal residence if he has owned and used the residence as his principal residence for at least two years out of the five-year period before the sale. You recently asked whether the amount of the exclusion would be affected if you used a portion of your property for business or to produce rental income. You can generally exclude some or all of the gain realized from the sale of a home you have used for business or to produce rental income if you meet the two-year ownership and use tests. If you use the property partly as a home and partly for business or to produce rental income, the treatment of any gain on the sale depends on whether the
business or rental part of the property is within your home or separate from your home. However, even if you satisfy the two-year ownership and use tests, the exclusion does not apply to any gain due to depreciation allowed or allowable for periods after May 6, 1997, or to any gain allocable to a period of nonqualified use after December 31, 2008. Any gain attributable to depreciation is subject to a maximum tax rate of 25%. A period of nonqualified use, in general, is any period during which the property is not used as the principal residence of the taxpayer or the taxpayer’s spouse (or a former spouse). If the part of your property used for business or to produce rental income is within your dwelling unit (i.e., house, apartment, condominium, etc.), such as a room used as a home office for a business, it’s not necessary to allocate gain on the sale of the property between the business part of the property and the part used as a home. The rules become more complex
if a separate part of your home was used for business or to produce rental income. In that case, you have to apply the ownership and use tests separately to each part of the property. For example, you cannot exclude any gain on the separate part of your property used for business or to produce rental income unless you owned and lived in that part of your property for at least two years during the five-year period ending on the date of the sale. If you do not meet the two-year use test for the business or rental part of your property, an allocation of the gain on the sale is required. For this purpose, you have to allocate the basis of the property and the amount realized upon its sale between the business or rental part and the part used as a home. The allocation is based on the same method of allocation that you used to determine the depreciation deductions for the business portion of the property. Continued on page 4

The DOL requires disclosure of investment-related fees, plan administrative expenses, and individual participant expenses, including details of fees charged for services such as loans and investment advice. In the market for a 401(k) plan? Here’s some basic information you’ll want to consider. 401(k) salary deferral plans are the most popular retirement plans today. Nearly every type of financial institution— banks, insurance companies, brokerage firms—offer 401(k) plan services. If your organization is considering offering a 401(k) plan for the first time— or it has a plan and you are reviewing its performance—there are several things to consider. Here is a quick checklist. Be sure the plan you’re looking at offers flexibility as to plan design. Most service providers offer an IRS-approved prototype plan, which can save big money over an individually designed plan. But a prototype plan can be inflexible. Make sure that any prototype plan you adopt is adaptable enough to meet your organization’s overall needs. Similarly, make sure the plan offers a broad range of investment options. Nearly all 401(k) plans allow employees to choose their own investments—
Not All 401(k) Plan Providers Are Created Equal usually from among several specified alternatives. The service provider you’re considering likely offers its own investment options. But what if these investment choices regularly underperform similar investments? You might want to consider hiring a service provider that allows you to use outside investments for at least some of the plan’s assets. Evaluate plan fees. Be sure to evaluate and/or compare the various plan-related fees. The DOL requires disclosure of investment-related fees, plan administrative expenses, and individual participant expenses, including details of fees charged for services such as loans and investment advice. As a result of these disclosures: • Plan participants can determine the reasonableness of the costs they’re being charged to save for retirement and compare the costs associated with different investments. • Plan sponsors can make better decisions about the service providers they select and the investments they offer under the plan. Better employer decisions can lead to more efficient pricing and lower costs to retirement plan participants. Look carefully at the administrative capabilities of the service provider. Some providers offer terrific investment returns or broad investment flexibility, Continued on page 14

MAYOR'S MESSAGE Joe Vinatieri
Congratulations to the Whittier Chamber on another successful and well attended Business Expo which took place last month at the Whittier Community Center. It’s always a great opportunity to network with the many exceptional businesses Whittier has to offer and enjoy food from some of our local restaurants. It was nice to see so many familiar faces and get to know some new folks as well. Every time I drive by the new Friendly Hills Marketplace I look to see how completion is coming along, and it’s getting close! New businesses opening their doors soon include Orchards Supply Hardware, Ulta Beauty, Nekter Juice Bar, Pizza Press, Rubio’s, Skechers and more. Also joining the center will be Home Goods who recently asked the City to assist with a hiring event to be held from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, from February 5 through February 17, 2017. We are thrilled to have this retailer and the others
locating to Whittier, providing further retail shopping opportunities, and hiring residents from the area for new jobs. Be sure to stop by the Whittier Chamber office during the times listed above to fi ll out an application and remember to share this information with anyone who may be interested. And other notable developments around town are moving towards completion including townhomes at the former Beverly Boulevard Masonic Lodge with 40 units currently under construction and a 72-unit luxury apartment project on Whittier Boulevard at Catalina. A new commercial center is also taking shape at the former Saturn dealership site which will welcome Starbucks, Jersey Mike’s Subs and additional tenants. Marshalls is set to join The Quad shopping center in the coming weeks and City staff has been working closely with Chick-fil-A to begin work shortly at the Whittwood Town Center. Activity in Uptown remains steady in the New Year. The City is continuing our work with property owners in the establishment of a community benefit district. UPDATE Captain Michael Davis
Avoiding crime in the new year - 2017 During 2016, crime was steady and showed an increase in Whittier. Make no mistake about it; just as criminals continue working hard to take away your money and valued possessions; the Whittier Police Department is working just as hard to prevent you and your family from becoming victims of their criminal acts. Vigilance coupled with taking simple steps throughout your day will help reduce your chances of being targeted by criminal activity. The most prominent property crimes in our community in 2016 continue to be vehicle burglaries and thefts from vehicles. A high percentage of reported car burglaries and thefts from vehicles involved the loss of valuable items that were left in plain view by owners while away from their vehicles. Items such as purses, laptops, cell phones, designer sunglasses, GPS units, backpacks, packages were left on
seats, floorboards, or on the dash and change left in plain sight. In some of the cases, criminals broke the window or punched the door lock and stole the items. In most cases, owners left car doors unlocked, which made it very easy for criminals to obtain their loot. You can reduce your chances of becoming a victim by NEVER leaving any items in plain view while away from your vehicle. This includes phone chargers, spare change and miscellaneous paperwork that may invite a criminal to enter your vehicle in search of more items. We also saw a minor increase in violent crimes for 2016. Robbery is a violent crime where force or fear is used to obtain property from the victim. Pedestrians are an easy target for robbers on streets, in parking lots or in areas with low lighting. As with burglaries, criminals look for an easy target. They size up weaknesses in
potential victims and always examine the person for visible valuable items. With the popularity of smart phones, IPads, iPods, and other small and handheld valuable electronics, criminals do not need to go far to find potential victims with headphones on. Such victims will never hear the criminal coming. When in parking lots and on the street, STAY ALERT, walk confidently, and avoid displaying those items that criminals can easily grab. Remember that life is much more important than property – during a robbery be smart – avoid fighting with a suspect to protect property. As a continued reminder, fraud, identity theft and unauthorized computer access remains an easy target for criminals and impacts victims for a long time after the crime is detected. Make sure to change your passwords frequently, using letters, numbers,
and symbols when composing your passwords. Also, shred all bills and mail with your personal information and make sure to SECURE YOUR HOME OR BUSINESS WIRELESS INTERNET CONNECTION AND NETWORK. An unsecured wireless connection will open the door for criminals to access your system for the purpose of theft and fraudulent activity. Most importantly, never think twice before calling the police when you see or hear something suspicious. As I speak with people in the community I continue to hear “I didn’t want to bother you guys,” or “I know you have bigger things to deal with”. In our view, small things lead to big things and suspicions many times lead to the capture of criminals – so please, call us anytime! If you would like additional crime prevention information, please visit www.cityofwhittier.org/depts/police/.

East Whittier City School District Superintendent announces retirement Following a 30-year career as an educator in the East Whittier City School District, including the last five years as superintendent, Mary Branca has announced that she will retire at the close of the 2016-17 academic year. “It has been an absolute honor to serve the children and families of this school district,” Branca said. “This community has become my family, the place where I raised my children and where I met parents, teachers, staff, administrators and a Board of Education dedicated to helping our children succeed. However, after a long and fulfilling career, I am excited to be able to enjoy more time with my family, including my five grandchildren.” In her administrative capacity, Branca was instrumental in helping the District overcome challenges during tough economic conditions. In November, local voters supported two bond measures that will ensure East Whittier students have access to high-quality learning facilities for years to come.
South Whittier School District Superintendent to retire after 27 years in district After dedicating nearly 27 years of her education career to the South Whittier School District, Superintendent Gail Baxter has announced she will retire in June 2017. Baxter, a longtime teacher and administrator in the District, announced the decision to the Board of Trustees in a January 17 closed session meeting. She praised the team of teachers and staff for instituting a culture of highquality education for students, lauded the increase of learning opportunities afforded to parents, and thanked the Whittier community for passing a $29 million bond to repair campus infrastructure and upgrade classroom technology.
“I am very proud of the progress South Whittier has made over my tenure in this wonderful school district,” Baxter said. “I truly love my job and believe that as a District, we are in the midst of very exciting times full of great changes and opportunities for exploring programs that will result in improved academic achievement for all students.” Baxter said she is looking forward to her retirement and plans on spending more time with her husband, daughters and sons-in-law, grandchildren and parents. You can use darker colors as accent pieces (throw pillows, rugs, etc..). Wall color choices are endless. Accent walls were very popular a few years ago, but in my opinion, only work well if the room is large enough, and if the wall itself is an area of focus, ie. artwork, commemorative plate collection, you get the picture. If you still have cottage cheese acoustic ceilings consider getting rid of them. Eliminating them really does make the area seem larger and now you’ll actually be able to clean your ceilings. Now that you’ve done that, consider painting them a white color. My favorite is Swiss Coffee. It’s a little warmer than standard Ultra Pure White. It may be easier to just extend the wall color to the ceiling but it can make the room seem like a cave. If you’re painting things yourself, spend the money on a good brush for trim and detail work. The rest doesn’t make as much of a difference as you think it will. Ok, here’s where the money comes into play; kitchens and bathrooms. Do your research, find out what you like and can actually live with long term. Real wood cabinets stand the test of time as opposed to their cheaper pressed board counterparts. They’re more expensive but well worth it. UPTOWN UPDATE
by Monica Peters, Hebert Design Werks Where does one begin? If you own your own home, you’ve been there. Do you hire someone or do it yourself? I have always been a fan of doing things yourself. It promotes a sense of personal pride as well as pride in your home. With that being said, I would like to add, know your limitations. You could end up spending more money in the long run for supplies used on trial and error. Also the added learning curve time it will take to complete the project, and the potential strain it can put on any relationship, are all things that should be considered. So now let’s talk about the least expensive thing you can do to help your living environment. Eliminate clutter, plain and simple. Everyone, yes, everyone has something they can get rid of, even if it means cleaning the junk drawer. Not only is it quite cathartic but it frees up space for something new. Next consider furniture placement. You would be surprised how just re-arranging what you already have can make a room seem larger and more inviting. If you’re concerned with heavy lifting, invest ten dollars in a set of furniture moving disks. I recommend the set of four round ones that come with the removable sheep skin covers in case you’re worried about scratching hard wood floors. If you’re still with me, this is where you can spend a little money. Paint colors can make or break a home. Deep purple may be your favorite color but keep in mind if your rooms are on the smaller side, darker colors make a room appear smaller. I’m not saying paint your walls off-white, but consider a lighter color.

“Dr. Yani completely corrected a major nerve damage injury that could have left me disabled for life after I had seen 8 previous doctors who did nothing to help me for 3 months. I was told surgery was my only option. I noticed feeling in my arm for the first time since my injury immediately after treatment with the ProAdjuster. After the first few weeks of treatments I could not believe the miraculous and drastic improvements I had made in my rapid road to recovery. Dr. Yani is the best of the best. I feel better than I did prior to my injury and have a new lease on life!” ~ Tawni Camargo

Whittier, CA - Imagine forty years ago if you were told that lasers would replace scalpels in surgery or that robotic instruments would build cars; you may not have believed it. By the same token, would you believe that chiropractic treatments could be performed using a special hand-held instrument developed by NASA scientists; all while you were sitting in an upright position without any turning or twisting movements? According to Dr. Yani Feliciano, “This new form of computerized treatment is so gentle and effective, that it truly amazes even the most skeptical patients. It’s called the Ultralign and it’s the newest version of the Proadjuster which is the latest, stateof-the-art technology in existence today, and the only one in Whittier.” This technology can safely and gently analyze and treat the spine and other joints to remove the nerve impingement that is often the cause of pains in the low back, neck, shoulders and elsewhere in the body. It also works on a variety of muscular conditions to loosen tight muscles with ease and comfort. Many patients say that it’s like getting a mini-massage. Even patients with knee, hip and foot problems such as plantar fascitis are being helped. It is also covered by most insurance companies including Medicare. Dr. Yani says that “The secret to this technology lies in its ability to deliver an extremely precise and gentle adjustment.” She says that, “Even though traditional forms of adjusting also work, Dr. Yani uses the ProAdjuster to people are drawn to this new technique because of how gentle it is analyze a patient’s spine and pin-point and does not involve any twisting, especially in the neck. areas of nerve impingement syndrome causing malfunction and pain. Many people like getting adjusted with traditional manual techniques, all of which are safe and effective. But there are a large number of people who never get to experience the amazing benefits of chiropractic because they are scared to have their spines adjusted in that way,” says Dr. Yani. Now, there is no longer a reason to be wary. This technology is perfect for anyone who has been thinking about going to a chiropractor, but hasn’t yet made that decision. Dr. Yani wants everyone to be able to experience these same benefits and if you have nerve interference causing any of the following conditions, the Ultralign may be the answer you’ve been looking for... • Neck & Shoulder pain • Poor Circulation • Low back pain • Sciatic pain • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome • Arthritis • Headaches • High Cholesterol • TMJ Problems • Fibromyalgia • Scoliosis • High Blood Pressure • Sports Injuries • Planter Fascitis • Knee or hip pain • Diabetes Computer guided treatment is consistent, measurable and extremely gentle. FEBRUARY 2017 Financial Update Continued from page 3 but are lacking in administrative ability. Remember: From an employer ’s and an employee’s perspective, the administration of a 401(k) plan is one of its most important elements. Check around to gauge the provider’s reputation for plan administration. Call some local customers of the provider for a referral. Ask, for example, if they’ve received late or incorrect statements. If so, find out how the provider handled the problem. Make sure that any problems were handled quickly and accurately. Finally, find out whether the service provider helps you on a continuing basis with employee communication. Communicating the plan’s features and benefits is essential to broad participation. And broad participation is essential to a successful 401(k) plan. Most service providers will meet with employees when the plan is first set up to help “sell” the plan to them. Often, though, explaining the plan to new employees is left to you. A service provider should be available to come in from time to time and reinforce the plan’s value to employees—both existing and new. Choosing a 401(k) plan and a service provider can be difficult, but by doing your due diligence and taking the time to ask the right questions to prospective plan providers, you can choose the right plan for your organization.

countertops, consider formica. They’ve come a long way with them over the years. Plumbing, electrical, flooring, and essentials (drawer pulls, faucets, appliances, etc...) all tally up rather quickly. Be prepared for sticker shock. If you’re up for the challenge, then by all means go for it. Do it yourself. If not, I strongly recommend hiring a licensed general contractor. You can certainly save a lot of money by using someone who isn’t but you have little to no legal recourse if something goes wrong. Feel free to check the license number with the Contractors’ State License Board at www.cslb.ca.gov and make sure the person with the license is who they say they are. There are far too many people who have been scammed by unscrupulous individuals. So, no matter what your decision, try to enjoy the process. It can be difficult and trying at times but keep in mind at the end of it all you will hopefully have learned something and added value and equity to your home.

FEBRUARY 2017
AROUND TOWN Whittier is Rockin’ with tribute artists concerts On February 4, Whittier will be thrown back to the disco era when a Bee Gees’ tribute band starring John Acosta will take place at The Whittier Center Theatre, located at the Whittier Community Center at 7630 Washington Ave. Whittier again will be rockin’ and rollin’ on April 15 when Led Zepagain, a tribute to rock band Led Zeppelin, will perform. Since 2015 longtime Whittier resident Robin Fox, owner of FoxTale Entertainment, has been producing tribute artist concerts with Dan Walker from The City of Whittier. According to Fox, “It’s a good feeling being able to bring top-notch entertainment to the community. There is such a receptive and appreciative audience and The Whittier Center Theatre is the perfect venue.” The Whittier Center Theatre is in a great location with ample free parking and there are no stairs inside to navigate which makes it easy for seniors. The Theatre has an intimate feeling and every seat is good. Shows begin at 7 p.m. so attendees can get home early or have a late dinner or dessert at the many Uptown establishments. “It’s so nice not to have the stress of fighting the traffic going into Los Angeles to see great entertainment,” Fox stated. Many of the tribute artists have toured the world with their shows and are largely responsible for keeping the music alive for future generations. The Center Theatre’s recent sold-out tribute to John Lennon last May had an audience ranging from college students to seniors. Past concerts have also included tributes to The Beach Boys, The Eagles, Elton John and Neil Diamond. For more information on events contact The Whittier Community Center at (562) 567-9430.
From Maddi’s Closet event raises $47,000 Nearly 150 area residents joined the fight against children’s cancer at a fundraiser sponsored by From Maddi’s Closet at Dodger Stadium recently. “From Maddi’s Closet’s dinner event at the Stadium Club at Dodger Stadium raised over $47,000 to assist with patient support programs,” says President and Founder Donna Holmes. “We greatly appreciate the support of the individuals and organizations that contributed in so many ways to making this event such a life-changing gift for these children.” The “Knock it Out of the Park” themed dinner was the major fundraiser for From Maddi’s Closet in 2016 in its efforts to help children fighting cancer. In recent years, the local non-profit group has donated more than $361,000 to help with children’s cancer research and provide emotional and financial support to thousands of patients and their families. After a delicious Stadium Club dinner, attendees enjoyed an exclusive Stadium tour, which included access to the Vin Scully Press Box, the 5th floor Memorabilia Aisle, the Dodger Awards Hallway, the Dugout, Bullpen, as well as a walk around the playing field. The group also enjoyed a special reception with former Dodger players Wes Parker and Mickey Hatcher. Participants donated generously to supply special needs equipment for
young patients. Silent and Live Auctions of items supplied by businesses and individuals were also an important means for raising funds during the evening. “Childhood cancer is the number one disease-related killer of children in our country, and we appreciate our local community’s strong support for the fight against this terrible disease,” says Holmes. Several major awards were presented at the event to individuals and organizations that have championed efforts to fight children’s cancer. From Maddi’s Closet is a local nonprofit organization started more than a decade ago after Madison Leslie Holmes lost her battle with cancer at four years of age. Participation in From Maddi’s Closet has grown since its early days, and its efforts to support children with cancer have broadened. Funds are raised for pediatric cancer research, and the group offers support to ill children and their families whose emotional and financial needs are unmet by other assistance programs. The group provides many services – from an annual toy drive to events and activities geared for patients at Children’s Hospitals in Orange County and Los Angeles. For additional information on the fight against children’s cancer, visit frommaddiscloset.org.

Nearly two hundred artists will be exhibiting and selling their artwork. In addition, many artists will personally be demonstrating their artistic skills during the three-day event. Attendees will enjoy seeing watercolor and oil paintings, unique handmade jewelry, ceramics, pottery, hand-woven clothing, photography, stained and fused glass, bronze and metal sculptures, carved wood, and a great selection of handcrafted one-of-a-kind items in the Arts & Crafts Boutique. Local high school students will also be displaying their artwork in a juried exhibition that showcases their talents and skills. There will be free art workshops for children on Saturday and Sunday, and festival attendees can browse, shop, enjoy musical entertainment, and eat at the Starving Artist Café during the three-day event. The festival committee is proud to announce that two Featured Artists have been chosen for the 2017 festival: Gerald Brommer and Jon Oakes. Both artists will be present during the festival weekend. Gerald Brommer, born in Berkeley, California, is a renowned watercolor and acrylic painter, collagist, innovative teacher, author and juror. He has exhibited in many
national competitive watercolor shows and has had over 165 one-man shows. He has written twenty-three books for high school and college art classes, as well as a book for artists on emotional content in landscape painting and several bestselling books on watercolor and collage. Jon Oakes was born in Minnesota, raised in North Dakota, and moved to California to attend college. While in school, Jon studied ceramics and quickly learned the unlimited possibilities found in ceramic firing techniques. He was particularly drawn to the bright, fiery colors that defined the ancient process of raku. About sixteen years ago, an opportunity arose to study glass-blowing at Santa Ana College. Always intrigued by the art of glass-blowing, he jumped at the chance and quickly grasped this new medium. His vibrant and artistic expression is varied, from extravagant floral chandeliers to contemporary standing lamps, spectacular fluted bowls, elegant lidded vessels, floral bouquets and abstract wall art and unique tile mosaics. Admission and parking for the festival is free to all attendees. All festival areas are open during the weekend, including the indoor galleries, artist demonstrations, outdoor exhibits, the patio area, and the Boutique. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Lopez, sixth grader at East Whittier Middle School, was chosen winner in the Lions International Peace Poster Contest sponsored by East Whittier Lions Club. Lopez’s poster was among more than 600,000 entries submitted worldwide in the 29th annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Lions Clubs International sponsors the contest to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people everywhere. “When my family, friends and strangers come together to accept one another’s differences—this is PEACE,” the 13 year old from Whittier said. The poster was judged by Vicki Schramm, President of the Whittier Art Association and Gallery and a committee of judges from East Whittier Lions Club for its originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme, “A Celebration of Peace.” The judging was held November 12 and 13 at the home of Lion Fran Coeur. East Whittier Lions Club Immediate Past President Fran Coeur said she was impressed by the expression and creativity of the students at East Whittier Middle School. “It is obvious that these young people have strong ideas about what
peace means to them. I’m so proud that we were able to provide them with the opportunity to share their visions.” Lopez’s poster advanced to face stiff competition at the district level and won Honorable Mention at the district. At the Club level it is an honor to recognize Alexis Monterozza as Honorable Mention for her outstanding entry.
