2023 CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL CONCERT

o t t h y e o j to t joy he SATURDAY, DEC. 9, AT 7:30 P.M. | SUNDAY, DEC. 10, AT 3 P.M. MARTIN WOLDSON THEATER AT THE FOX SPOKANE, WASH.

WELCOME FROM PRESIDENT SCOTT MCQUILKIN Welcome to the Whitworth Christmas Festival Concert. We know that for many in attendance, this annual performance ushers you into the Advent season. Hearing the angelic voices of our student choir members, accompanied by wonderfully talented student instrumentalists, carries listeners into an expectancy of Christmas and the celebration of Jesus’ arrival. And then, at those intervals when you are invited to add your own voice to the singing of familiar carols – well, the coming of the Christ child simply feels even that much nearer. Thank you for joining the extended Whitworth community for this performance. May the lyrics and melodies we hear today, in the many languages of the world for which Christ came, guide and accompany you into a joyous and faith-filled Advent.

WELCOME FROM DIRECTOR OF CHORAL ACTIVITIES XIAOSHA LIN On behalf of the Whitworth musicians on the stage, thank you for joining us for the 2023 Whitworth Christmas Festival Concert, Joy to the World. Oftentimes, certain tunes will come to our ears when we think of the Christmas season based on our upbringings and traditions, from the good old classical hymns like Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, to popular tunes like White Christmas. That’s what Christmas music is like to most performers and audiences tonight. But have you thought about how the Christmas message and story are told in other cultures and traditions in other parts of the world? What do their celebrations look like? What does their music sound like? Those we have probably never heard of and barely know? While the birth of Jesus Christ is the good tidings for all Christians around the world, we shall open our ears to perceive and embrace the vibrant harmonies, open our hearts to appreciate the beauty of diversity, and then share this Joy all in unity. As the icing on the cake, we have the honor to collaborate with the local Spokane Irish-Americana band An Dóchas as our special guest. With all the student musicians, we are excited to present to you a feast of different kinds of Christmas jubilation.

As a courtesy to other listeners and to the performers, we ask that you refrain from texting and from using cameras or recording devices of any kind during the program. Please turn off all electronic beeping devices (cellphones and watches). Finally, we request that you withhold applause until the conclusion of the final selection. Thank you.

I. ¡Oh, mi Belén!

Traditional Biscayan Carol

¡Oh, mi Belén! Llegó tu hora bien amada,

Oh, Bethlehem! Blest is the hour the Savior comes to you,

¡Oh, mi Belén! La luz que irradias sincesar, Es como un faro que nos guía en nuestra ruta, Noche y día. ¡Oh, mi Belén!

Oh, Bethlehem! Light from your city shines so bright, Burns like a beacon guiding us safely straight on our way, In dark and daylight. Oh, Bethlehem!

II. El Desembre Congelat

Traditional Catalonian Carol

On December’s frozen ground, Fear and doubt denying. April wears a flower crown, All the world admiring. From a garden filled with love, Springs a blossom from above. With a flower so lovely, Comes the blessed hour.

El primer Pare causà, La nit tenevrosa. Que a tot el mon ofusca, La vista penosa. Mes en una mitja nit, Brilla el sol que n’és eixit. D’una bella aurora Que el cel enamora.

God the Father made the night, All in darkness shrouding. Hiding from all human sight, Worry, fear and doubting. Shining through the midnight clear, Brightest light of all the year. With a light outpouring, Heaven stands adoring.

El més de maig ha florit, sense ser encara, Un lliri blanc y polit, De fragancia rara.

Blooming at our humble feet, Winter’s chill defying, Springs a lily pale and sweet, Fragrant and inspiring.

To this wandering sun sing glories, young one With passion and grace, with joy and contentment, sing to it, young one. That golden orb lights up the heavens, young one. And then live in its rays, take joy in its light.

Divino Pedro tus glorias hoy acobardan mi voz, que no dejar registrarse, supone la luz mayor.

Divine Peter, your glories today quiet my voice, that is overwhelmed because of the great light.

Angels’ Carol

Forest Treble Choir

John Rutter (b. 1945)

Have you heard the sound of the angel voices Ringing out so sweetly, ringing out so clear? Have you seen the star shining out so brightly As a sign from God that Christ the Lord is here? Have you heard the news that they bring from heaven To the humble shepherds who have waited long? Gloria in excelsis Deo, Gloria in excelsis Deo! Hear the angels sing their joyful song. He is come in peace in the winter’s stillness, Like a gentle snowfall in the gentle night; He is come in joy like the sun at morning Filling all the world with radiance and with light. He is come in love as the child of Mary; In a simple stable we have seen his birth: Gloria in excelsis Deo, Gloria in excelsis Deo! Hear the angels singing ‘Peace on earth.’ He will bring new light to a world in darkness, Like a bright star shining in the skies above; He will bring new hope to the waiting nations When he comes to reign in purity and love. Let the earth rejoice at the Saviour’s coming; Let the heavens answer with the joyful morn; Gloria in excelsis Deo, Gloria in excelsis Deo! Hear the angels singing ‘Christ is born,’ Hear the angels singing ‘Christ is born.’

Magnificat Anima Dominum. Exultavit spiritus meus in Deo salutari meo.

Magnificat My soul doth magnify the Lord! My spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior.

For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaid: Behold, from now on, all generations will call me blessed. Because he did great things for me and holy is his name.

Et misericordia ejus a progenie in progenies timentibus eum. Fecit potentiam in bracchi o suo: dispersit superbos mente cordis sui!

And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation He made the power of his arm: scattered the proud in the mind of his own heart!
