Program Note
WELCOME FROM DIRECTOR OF CHORAL ACTIVITIES XIAOSHA LIN
Partnered with The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Whitworth University’s 2024 Christmas Festival Concerts are hosted within this magnificent and historical architecture. The cathedral suggests the typical English Gothic cathedral, while its details include French influences. Surrounded by colorful stained glasses that illustrate biblical stories and tall vaults that generate resonating and echoing acoustics, the repertoire of this concert is selected to correspond to the architecture to create a crossover experience of architecture and music; sight and sound.
The concert skeleton is based on Messe de Minuit pour Noël (Midnight Mass for Christmas) by French Baroque composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1634-1704). The mass was composed in circa 1694 for the Jesuit church of the Église Saint-Louis in Paris. The music of the mass was based on the melodies of 10 French Christmas carols, and we will hear three of them in one of the movements today. The five movements of this ordinary mass (from the Latin liturgical rites), Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Agnus Dei, will be spread throughout the concert program, filled with other new and old choral literature that tells the Christmas story and spirit. While the audience follows the text and translations in the program, one is encouraged to trace the connections between the text and the biblical stories depicted on the stained glasses: the nativity, the transfiguration, the crucifixion, the resurrection, the ascension and the Pentecost.
The finale of the concert will present you with the well-known Christmas carol In Dulci Jubilo in a Venetian polychoral style, cori spezzati (broken choirs). This is a type of music of the late Renaissance and early Baroque eras that involves spatially separate choirs and singing in alternation. The audience will experience a stereo acoustic by the ensembles placed at different positions in the cathedral.

MUSIC AT WHITWORTH
The Whitworth University Music Department, accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, provides superb training in music as well as a thorough introduction to this essential element of the liberal arts. Whitworth music majors have gone on to prestigious graduate schools, fulfilling performance careers and successful teaching positions. Also, many non-music majors participate in the university’s renowned touring ensembles and enroll in private lessons through the music department. Whitworth University offers bachelor of arts degrees in music ministry, composition, instrumental performance, jazz performance, piano performance, piano pedagogy, vocal performance and music education. Music scholarships are available to both music majors and non-majors.
