Welcome to the spring 2024 concert of the Whitworth Community Chorale. I am thrilled you are here for the performance of this historic launch season. The Whitworth Community Chorale is a non-auditioned, open-enrollment choral ensemble specifically for community singers of all ages and experience levels as well as Whitworth students, faculty, staff and alumni. The chorale was formed to provide singers with a unique opportunity to participate in an ensemble that provides a rigorous and high-level environment but one that can fit within members’ often complex schedules. The chorale is also an opportunity for the university to strengthen its connections to the surrounding Spokane community as well as to continue to connect with alumni. The Whitworth Community Chorale is a space where people from a wide variety of lifestyles, belief systems and journeys are unified together through their passion of choral singing. The chorale is a microcosm of what the best of humanity can be – people with a full variety of beliefs connected for a common good.

Dedicated to the performance of large-scale choral masterworks in addition to secular and sacred choral works, the chorale rehearses Monday evenings from 6:30-8:30 p.m. during the Whitworth University academic calendar. The ensemble presents two large-scale concerts per academic year (one performance each semester). The chorale is a place where all singers can gloriously unify their voices. The invitation to join the chorale is always open – the registration QR code is below. 3. Zum Evangelium und Credo

Noch lag die Schöpfung formlos da, nach heiligem Bericht; da sprach der Herr: Es werde Licht! Er sprtach’s und es ward Licht. Und Leben regt, und reget sich, und Ordnung tritt hervor. Und überall, allüberall tönt Preis und Dank empor.

Der Mensch auch lag in Geistesnacht, erstarrt von dunklem Wahn; der Heiland kam, und es ward Licht! Und heller Tag bricht an. Und seiner Lehre heil’ger Strahl weckt Leben nah und Fern; und alle Herzen pochen Dank, und preisen Gott den Herrn.

Doch warnend spricht der heil’ge Mund:

Nicht frommt der Glaub allein, nur die Erfüllung eurer Pflicht kann Leben ihm verleih’n.

Drum gib ein gläubiges Gemüt! Und gib uns auch, o Gott, ein liebend Herz, das fromm und treu stets folget dem Gebot!

Verleih’ uns Kraft und Mut, daß wir nicht nur die Wege seh’n, die der Erlöser ging, daß wir auch streben nachzugeh’n.

3. Gospel and Creed

Let thy gospel show us heaven’s message, and lead us, Lord, through thy grace into the kingdom of joy.

Du sprichst: Dies ist mein Leib, mein Blut, nehm hin und denket meiner Liebe, wenn opfernd ihr ein Gleiches tut.

6. After the Consecration Beholding thy grace and goodness towards me, O my Saviour, I see thee at thy last supper surround by thy beloved ones. Thou breakest the bread, thou givest the cup.

Thou speakest: This is my body, my blood take it and think of my love, when you make the same sacrifice.

We sacrifice here, according to thy word, on thy holy altar, and thou, my Saviour, art present, seen by the eye of the soul.

Lord, who bore pain and death to give us life, let this bread of heaven be our comfort in life and in death.

THE CONDUCTOR

Joshua Chism

Joshua Chism (b. 1987) is the associate director of choral studies and coordinator of music education at Whitworth University. At Whitworth, Chism advises music education students, teaches choral music education and music history courses, and conducts the Forest Treble Choir and the Whitworth Community Chorale. He is also the faculty advisor for the local C-NAfME chapter.

Chism is the conductor and artistic director for Chorale Coeur d’Alene, a regional choral arts society based in Idaho. Founded in 2001, Chorale CdA’s mission is to promote excellence in choral artistry, engage the local community through creative collaboration initiatives, and support music education through targeted programming.

Chism has a passion for music ministry. He currently serves as the director of traditional worship at Whitworth Church where he conducts the adult choir and handbell choir. He has served as director and minister of music in churches since 2012. During his music ministry career, Chism has directed handbell ensembles, vocal ensembles at all levels and contemporary worship bands in addition to serving as congregational song leader and worship minister.

Chism holds a Ph.D. in music education with an emphasis in conducting and choral pedagogy from the University of Oklahoma in Norman (2022). He earned a master of music degree in choral conducting from the University of Missouri–Columbia, graduating in 2019. Chism also holds a bachelor of music education degree and a bachelor of music composition degree from Missouri State University in Springfield, where he graduated summa cum laude in 2010. Additionally, he holds Kodály Level I, II and III certifications.

Chism is regularly sought after as a guest clinician/conductor for various regional and district honor choirs at both the elementary and secondary levels. His music education philosophy hinges on the centrality of a quality and equitable music-making process, and his choral rehearsals are fast-paced, energetic and full of movement. His research interests include the impact of service-learning internships, music assessment, MUED curriculum content and community music. As an active researcher, his work has recently been presented at the NAfME Music Research and Teacher Education Conference, the Symposium on Research in Choral Singing, the American Choral Directors Association National Conference, the Society for Music Teacher Education Conference, and the College Music Society National Conference.
