A Letter from the Provost U.S. News & World Report consistently features Whitworth as one of the very best regional universities in the West. When it comes to undergraduate teaching, Whitworth is currently ranked No. 3. This is not surprising, as our professors are amazing educators who see their profession as their vocation. They spend countless hours perfecting their craft of providing an education of mind and heart by planning, revising and updating their courses and lessons. And outside of class, professors at Whitworth mentor their students and provide invaluable advice and guidance. If U.S. News & World Report had a specialized ranking that measured faculty scholarship, I am certain Whitworth would also be highlighted as a leading institution of higher learning. Our professors’ callings go well beyond teaching and mentoring, as they also take their role as scholars and artists very seriously. As the 2019-20 Faculty Scholarship Report aptly demonstrates, scholarship in its many forms is a hallmark of our faculty. Our professors regularly present at international, national and regional conferences and disseminate their work in the form of books, book chapters, peer-reviewed journal articles, gallery exhibits and concerts. Our professors receive grants and awards, and some of them are public intellectuals who publish in mass media outlets. In addition, Whitworth’s faculty members are committed to their professional guilds and serve in many leadership functions. They lead national and international academic associations, and many also serve their communities and churches in various ways. I invite you to take a look at this year’s Faculty Scholarship Report to learn more about the highly impressive breadth and depth of our faculty’s scholarly and artistic accomplishments.

Gregor A. Thuswaldner Provost & Executive Vice President

“The most remarkable change COVID-19 made in my life was to suddenly interest everyone in infectious disease and existential angst, something I have studied for at least a decade, and which, prior to 2020, was seen as kind of a ‘quirky’ niche specialty, even to myself. Even at premier academic institutions, it has been hard during my career to persuade people that infectious disease does matter in the first world, and that we are vulnerable to such threats. I feel that Whitworth’s commitment to Christian principles made it one of the few institutions I have encountered that didn’t have difficulty in seeing the relevance of all of this.” KARI NIXON

“Whitworth welcomes interdisciplinary scholarship and scholarship that takes seriously the need to make scholarship – at least certain forms – accessible to communities outside of academia. As someone who studies the intersection of socio-moral development and popular culture (especially superhero media), the support I have received in these endeavors from colleagues has been encouraging. My scholarly interests serve as a reminder of the value of interdisciplinary knowledge and perspectives when trying to make sense of complex human phenomena. This reminder, in turn, helps me look for connections to course content in myriad places.” JUSTIN MARTIN

“I love how the expertise I cultivate through my scholarship has direct impact on how I teach and mentor. For example, my own working-poor background and subsequent research on firstgeneration, working-class, and low-income people gives me particular empathy for students from those backgrounds. In addition to teaching about those issues, I also design my classes with those groups in mind. As another example, I’ll be teaching an elective course about rural issues that comes directly from dissertation research in rural America. There is definitely a direct connection between my scholarship and my teaching and mentoring.” ROBERT FRANCIS Assistant Professor Sociology

“I love research methods and planning research projects in general. Merging that interest with my love for teaching is one of the things I love most about being at Whitworth. So, my favorite part of working on projects with students is two-part; one, getting the opportunity to support students as they explore topics in their interest areas. And second is exposing students to the power of research and a well-designed study. When I work alongside students while they plan research projects on topics they choose, I get to see them experience, then understand and work to close the gap between research and practice. They begin to understand how valuable research and research methods can be for informing their instruction in their own classrooms. REBECCA O’BRIEN Assistant Professor Education (Graduate)

“Whitworth is uniquely positioned with scholarship because we value teaching and because we work exclusively with undergraduates. Both of these are integral to research, and the relationships we can form with students through teaching are the same ones we translate into our research projects. Showing undergraduates the excitement and frustration of research, while also supporting their success with authorships on publications and meeting presentations, all helps to prepare and propel our students to great things after they leave Whitworth. AARON PUTZKE
