SNAP, CRACKLE, DROP In the spring ’23 issue of Whitworth Today, alumni shared their pinecone memories – and solved a mystery – in “Catching a Tradition.” Here, Tara (Sackman) Mounsey ’11 adds her inspiring story to Whitworth pinecone lore. “I tried all four years to catch my pinecone, always running when I heard the telltale crackle. The spring of my senior year, I went outside one lightly windy afternoon and committed to it for an extended time. I finally caught one! I kept my pinecone for many years, but I fear it has gotten lost in my many moves since then, although it may still be at my parents’ house. It took me years to shake running after that crackle sound!” Tara, your effort and dedication make Whitworth proud. Well done.

These Rich a.2nd Joyful Days

BY JULIE RIDDLE ’92

J

oy (Limburg) Olsen ’56, M.Ed. ’60, has crossed the Pacific Ocean 42 times. The first time, she traveled by freighter, her belongings stowed in metal barrels. “I was a shy, young farm girl,” she says, “but God sent me off across the ocean.” She lived in the Philippines for 40 years, returning to Spokane every few years to visit family, then for good to care for her mother. “I had a wonderful life as a single person,” she says. “I had no intention of looking for anything else.”

oy and Rich Olsen ’60, M.Ed. ’67, met at Mead Middle School. The two classmates became good friends and remained so through high school. After graduating, each attended Whitworth, but not at the same time. Rich served with the U.S. Navy and then earned a B.A. in education on the G.I. Bill. He taught elementary grades in the Tri-Cities area, returning to Whitworth in the summers to earn a master’s in school administration; he served as a principal for a time and completed his career in the classroom.

time he visited family in Spokane, he also visited Hugh Collins ’56, a mutual friend who lived three doors down from Joy. After the visit, Rich knocked on Joy’s door to say hello. “Joy invited me in, and it was two hours before I got out,” he says with a deep chuckle.

Joy earned a B.A. and a master’s in education. She taught grade school in Portland, Ore., and then bravely boarded that freighter in 1964. She taught elementary grades at Faith Academy, a new school in Manila for children of missionaries, and she started a program there for gifted children.

Joy and Rich were married at Trinity Baptist Church in March 2017, with more than 200 guests in attendance. Rich, a widower with two sons, was 82 years old. Joy was 81. “That was the best fun I’ve had in a long, long time,” she says. “It was really delightful. A true celebration.”

Over the years, Rich and Joy kept track of each other through updates from the Mead Alumni Association. “Each of us always kind of carried this little something for the other,” Joy says.

Now married six years, Joy and Rich live at the Rockwood at Whitworth retirement community, where they’re known as the couple who holds hands. “It started as a romantic thing,” Joy says, “but we joke that it holds us both up.”

Their shared life advice for others is simple: Follow God. “God has been so good,” Rich says. “So good.”

Extreme winter weather in 2016 curtailed Rich’s Spokane visits, so the couple continued their courtship through daily phone calls. “We had a lifetime to talk about,” Joy says, “and [our relationship] kept building.”
