Love Lasts
Love Lasts, photograph by Abigail Ruffcorn ’27, fall 2023. (Originally published in the 2024 issue of Scribendi magazine, a publication of the Western Honors Council.)
Fromt he A rtist
“My grandparents [Jack Bradford ’67, M.Ed. ’76 and Gena (Goode) Bradford ’85, MAT ’91] have been married for 57 years. I wanted to capture a real and raw moment that demonstrates powerful, mature love. To me, this photo means passion, dedication and the choice to love someone even when things are hard. Through the loss of a child, health problems and many other tough moments, my grandparents have stuck by each other and shown how to love each other like Jesus loved the church.
“I took this photo in my living room using a Nikon D3500 with a 35mm lens. I edited the portrait in black and white because black-and-white photography can be even more powerful than color. I edited the photo with Adobe Lightroom to express a worn and weathered look that emphasizes how the best loves are not new and shiny but those that have seen storms and trials.”
Jack’s and Gena’s choices to love each other no matter what, and to attend Whitworth, have made a lasting impact on their family. They are the parents of alumni Kelly (Bradford) Ruffcorn ’95, Emily Bradford ’98 and Hannah Bradford ’00 and the grandparents of Maggie Ruffcorn ’22 and Abigail Ruffcorn ’27, a political science major and Whitworth honors student.
The greatest of these is love
As a teen, Gena lost her family and home. Crushing despair and depression soon set in. She credits God with bringing her to Whitworth through improbable circumstances, where she experienced healing and hope. She also encountered Jack one Saturday evening, grilling steaks at Saga. Along with discovering each other at Whitworth, Jack and Gena discovered their callings to help others heal. Read their inspiring story at whitworth.edu/jack-and-gena
