Ratios to Know— Omega-3 to Omega-6

aybe, you weren’t so hot on fractions in elementary school. Now there is some compelling new research that should cause you to pay closer attention to ratios again. Consumption of omega-3 supplements for a four-month period may help shift the ratio of fatty acids away from the less favorable fatty acid (omega-6) in favor of the beneficial fatty acid (omega-3). The study, published in Brain, Behavior, and Immunity in September 2012, demonstrated that the majority of otherwise healthy middle-aged and older participants who took omega-3s altered the balance of dietary omega-3: omega-6 in a way that helped preserve the tips of chromosomes in cells. These tips, called telomeres, shorten over time as a result of aging. The good news is that when researchers analyzed the participants’ omega-3: omega-6 ratio in relationship to telomere lengthening, they found that longer telomere length was more prevalent in those who substantially improved the ratio of omega-3s to other fatty acids in their diet. agree with other researchers who suggest that patients with CAD could also benefit from vitamin B6 supplementation. “Vitamin B6 may not only encourage better endogenous synthesis of CoQ10 but also decrease the homocysteine concentration, which is particularly notable because homocysteine concentration was unchanged after coenzyme Q10 supplementation.” High homocysteine levels in blood are believed to increase the chance of CAD, Alzheimer’s disease and osteoporosis. hile most research on green tea has focused on its potential benefits for reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and certain cancers and helping with weight management, there is now another reason to pass the teapot. Research published in the October 2012 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that regular green tea consumption may reduce the incidence of digestive cancers, including cancers of the stomach, esophagus and colorectum. Researchers found that the risk of all digestive cancers combined was reduced by 17 percent among women who were regular (three cups a week for more than six months) green tea drinkers. Further reductions in risk were connected with an increased level of tea drinking. Tea time, anyone?

Researchers state, “Consumption of Lactobacillus amylovorus or Lactobacillus fermentum bacteria as probiotics may assist in reducing the development of obesity, since these bacteria may confer modifications to energy handling within the host.” Or in other words, “Present results suggest that both LF and LA probiotic treatments are capable of inducing shifts in body composition.” New research, presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2012, suggests that a daily dose of a Lactobacillus reuteri may help reduce levels of the “bad” cholesterol, while also helping lower total cholesterol. Although this was a small-scale study, the results are promising.

Vitamin D is found in dietary sources such as eggs, fortified milk, fish, oysters and fortified cereals, and it is often referred to as the “sunshine” vitamin because as few as 10 minutes of exposure three times a week is thought to help our bodies produce vitamin D. For this reason, vitamin D intake is especially important in winter because people who are homebound or living in northern latitudes do not receive adequate sunshine exposure. Also, individuals who bundle up in winter with clothing that completely covers the body or those who use sunscreen all the time are at risk for vitamin D deficiency. Clean Cuisine Chocolate Chia Cookies Bake a batch of these for the office, a neighbor or with your kids. Healthy never tasted so good! 1½ cups raw almonds 8 pitted dates 2 cups barley flour ¼ cup Barlean’s Organic Chia Seeds ½ cup Barlean’s Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, softened ½ cup real maple syrup ½ teaspoon unrefined sea salt ½ cup vegan mini chocolate chips 1. Put the dates in the food processor and pulse 6 to 7 times, or until dates are well ground. Add the dates to the almonds. 3. To the mixing bowl, add the barley flour, chia seeds, coconut oil, maple syrup and salt. Combine all ingredients with a wooden spoon. Form the mixture into tablespoonful balls and space them evenly on a large cookie sheet. Using your index finger, make an indent in each cookie. Fill each cookie with 4 or 5 mini chocolate chips. 4. Bake cookies for 18 minutes. The cookies should be done at this point, but the chocolate will not be totally melted. As soon as you remove the cookies from the oven, take the back of a spoon and gently press down on the chocolate so that it melts. Set the cookies aside to cool and harden for at least 15 minutes before eating.

Blake’s Healthy Gingerbread Pancakes These are perfect for a holiday breakfast with kids! I named these rich, toasty, and slightly spicy cakelike gingerbread pancakes after my son just because he loves them so very much. I’ve been serving them for Christmas morning for years now (in fact, the photo below was taken about 3 years ago for my cookbook) but one of the best things about them is that you can make them in advance and then freeze so you don’t have to cook on Christmas morning. If you have kids in the house and want to do something extra special, just cut the cooked pancakes with a gingerbread cookie cutter before serving. A little drizzle of molasses is also a sweet touch! YIELDS APPROXIMATELY 10 GINGERBREAD PANCAKES 1½ cups white whole wheat flour ½ cup plus 2 tablespoons Barlean’s Forti-Flax (ground flaxseed) 1 teaspoon cinnamon ½ teaspoon ground cloves ½ teaspoon nutmeg 1 teaspoon baking powder 2 cage-free organic omega-3 eggs ½ cup canned pumpkin 1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger

DAVID STEINMAN What do you think of corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting? JOEL MAKOWER Reporting on sustainability has become table stakes for larger companies; there are 600 or so published every year. But reporting is a beginning, not an end, of a process. Most companies believe that publishing a corporate social responsibility (CSR) or sustainability report is a box they need to check— then they're done. But it really should be the start of a process: What did we learn? What information did we lack? Where are we doing better (or worse) than expected? By asking such questions, and gauging feedback from others, a CSR report can become a critical tool companies can use to continually up their game.

Do you sometimes feel that it is as if the green business and fossil fuel business sectors are operating in parallel universes? Oil, coal and natural gas companies are working hard to squeeze every nickel of profit they can out of their operations for as long as possible—that's what capitalism encourages—so they are on a different path than the world of sustainable business. A growing number of companies are recognizing that their ability to operate over the long term is directly linked to their ability to get off of fossil fuels.

What are some of the most exciting events and trends in green business? There are several things we're focusing on at GreenBiz. One is viewing sustainability as a way to mitigate risk: supply-chain risk, reputational risk, operational risk and

more. That's a far cry from the usual view of green business as “doing well by doing good.” In my speeches and presentations, I often show a slide containing the logos of two dozen or so companies—from every sector and across multiple continents. What do they have in common? They all had to restate their earnings downward as a result of supply-chain disruptions or price changes. What does that have to do with sustainability? In a world where floods in Thailand can disrupt the hard-drive market for more than a year; in a world where a “superstorm” on the East Coast can cause tens of billions of dollars of business disruption, even shut down stock exchanges; in a world where more frequent and severe droughts, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes and other weather can wreak economic chaos—companies can no longer view sustainability as a “nice to do” activity. And investors are starting to see that. There are several efforts underway to encourage and persuade companies to report and disclose more information about their readiness to conduct business in a world of climate change, dwindling natural resources, and increased demands for energy. Another thing we’re focusing on is very exciting: a technology revolution in which data is making buildings, vehicles and energy systems ever smarter and more efficient. We call this technology convergence VERGE, and we've been producing events on this topic for the past two years. It's a mash-up of sustainability and technology, and it’s gaining a lot of excitement. You'll be hearing more about this in the coming months and years.

t was a lovely summer morning on June 17, 2011, when 23-year-old Mackenzie Booth was driving down a back road in Kintnersville, Pennsylvania, heading in high gear to the barn where she would meet her horses’ vet. THE PAINFUL TRUTH AND RELIEVING SOLUTION After two months of bed rest and an unsettling degree of pain, Mackenzie went back to the doctor only to learn that the area around the plate that had been inserted in her foot was infected; her body was rejecting the metal. Before long, he found himself working one on one with children with behavioral issues and their families to eliminate potential environmental factors. Christopher explains, “I took a holistic approach, asking the parents questions like, what is your child eating on a daily basis? What is being used to clean your child’s sheets? What kind of shampoo is he/she using? What treatment modality is being used? Are the parents, educators and physicians working together? I tried to find out what environmental factors could be impacting the child.” In Los Angeles, Christopher became the “go to” guy to solve the environmental link to behavioral disorders and learning delays. In 2005, Christopher became the executive director of Healthy Child Healthy World (formerly The Children’s Environmental Health Coalition), a nonprofit organization that educates and inspires people to take action and create cleaner, greener, safer environments where children and families can flourish. And in 2007, he became a father when Jessica gave birth to their son Luke. Now a parent himself, Christopher's commitment to the cause deepened. ur crew at Healthy Living recently spent a cool and windy Los Angeles afternoon with children’s environmental health advocate and co-founder (along with actress Jessica Alba) of The Honest Company, Christopher Gavigan, and his wife, actress and castmember of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy Jessica Capshaw. On top of their demanding careers, Christopher and Jessica have three young children, but they happily made time to talk to Healthy Living because of their passion for helping families to create healthier, nontoxic environments at home. For them, it’s personal. CHILDREN, CHEMICALS AND HEALTH Christopher first became concerned about the environmental impact on children’s health in graduate school. “I did a year of graduate studies in education and then proceeded to teach fifth and sixth graders ecological sciences amidst the redwoods of Santa Cruz, California,” he explains. He observed an alarming number of students experiencing behavioral challenges such as learning delays, autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). “I was fascinated by how this could happen in one generation—I remembered only one or maybe two kids in my entire school growing up who suffered from learning delays but never saw any kids with ADHD or autism,” he says. Christopher was compelled to discover what could be causing such a dramatic increase. “I found a lot of research

JESSICA ALBA AND THE HONEST COMPANY While at Healthy Child Healthy World, Christopher found directing parents to truly safe products challenging. “Parents have limited time and a limited budget. I wanted to encourage them to get safer products, but many times what they thought was better actually was not. I got frustrated having to recommend products from several different small companies—often from other countries—to get what they needed. There just wasn’t one brand that I could say was a trusted source for many items,” Christopher explains. At the same time, Christopher worked with major American companies to vet the ingredients of their consumer products for safety. And he was often disappointed by what he found. In 2008, People magazine hosted a Healthy Child Healthy World book launch party for Christopher, and Jessica Alba attended. She was seven months pregnant with her first child. “She came up to me and told me ‘I live my life as healthfully as possible too’ and we kept in close contact after that,” Christopher explains. Before long, they began discussing starting a company that would create nontoxic products with pure ingredients—affordable products with a high aesthetic and sense of style. But most of all, they discussed making natural products that performed just as well, if not better, than their conventional counterparts. They set some very high standards to meet, but in early 2012, they executed that vision and The Honest Company was launched. You'll find mostly natural and organic ingredients in every product with only a few exceptions. The same high standards have been applied to the creation of The Honest Company’s baby diapers. While they aim to get into cloth-based diapering eventually, the company offers a hybrid diaper that is super absorbent with cute printed designs that mothers love. Christopher found that the “green & conventional” diapers were disappointing and didn't meet his standards. “Often they were basically a standard diaper, but made with brown and neutral colors—and the manufacturers did not offer much transparency,” he explains. The diaper works beautifully just like a conventional diaper—giving parents a much more sustainable and safe option. products—and did not know the serious impact on health that certain cleaning products could have. “On some level, I’m still completely flummoxed as to how there are products designed to be ‘good’ for you that actually harm you—pregnant women and babies,” she explains. “I take no credit for my greenness, I get it all from Christopher,” she says. HEALTH IN THE HOME Christopher and Jessica are healthy in terms of diet and nutrition too. Buying organic, fresh and local as much as possible is a priority. “We are so lucky to have a fantastic farmer’s market near my son’s school. We actually plan our week’s meals around what’s fresh, organic and in season,” Jessica says. They always choose organic—even getting frozen organic over fresh conventional. While Christopher is a vegetarian and has been for 20 years, Jessica eats mostly natural chicken and fresh fish and so do their children. They are big on supplements—Christopher is passionate about nutrition and natural remedies. In fact, The Honest Company plans to expand into this area in the coming year. “We take lots of probiotics for healthy digestion, whole food multivitamins and vitamin D—extra in the winter,” he says. Jessica adds that they all take calcium and a daily DHA (omega-3) supplement too. For an immune boost, they go for elderberry syrup or a colloidal silver spray. Christopher also does cleanses a couple times a year for detoxification and is looking into purchasing an infrared sauna for their home. Infrared sauna is known for its cardiovascular, detoxification and relaxation benefits. It's clear that family is number one for Christopher and Jessica. n April 7th 2011 at approximately 7:20 in the morning in Hood River, Oregon, Christy Cole, daughter of James Cole, who is founder of the dietary supplement company Maxam Nutraceutics and other health businesses, was interrupted in the shower when she heard a knock at the door. Her boyfriend answered while she went to dress. As soon as she saw it was agents from the Food and Drug Administration, Federal Bureau of Investigation and Internal Revenue Service, accompanied by the police, she called Cole. At the time, Christy was living nearby the TurboSonic offices, another one of Cole’s companies, located across from Maxam Labs. “They also asked me for a key to my dad’s house. Then they asked about his safe. I said, ‘I didn’t know he had a safe.’” She escorted them around the back of the office and unlocked the door. “They asked me to ‘step back into the driveway, step away from the door.’ And that’s when they pulled out their weapons and started raiding.”

It was later reported that there were 47 agents, most all of them armed. The raid was conducted in true gestapo-like fashion. With raised voices, the agents demanded all surveillance systems be turned off. They manhandled employees and conducted private interrogations that involved yelling and screaming. To this day, some Maxam Labs employees suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. One of the defining trends of our time is the systematic war that federal pharmaceutical police agents are waging on natural health and medical and health freedom. We’ve been reporting on The Great Maxam Labs raid by the federal government for over a year and we will continue until this injustice is remedied. including those found in the autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder communities. At Healthy Living, we have done many interviews with people or parents of children who had used PCA. We wrote the book New Hope for Autism because we felt that this information needs to be out there. To date, the book has sold thousands of copies and no doubt helped many parents to make informed health and medical choices. We did our homework and the product showed an amazing record. We also know that this small business, employing more than a dozen people in Hood River and elsewhere across the county is what we want to encourage in our country. It is important to keep people working and sustain jobs, while also offering products that help maintain health through preventive approaches. Yet, now the federal government decided to conduct an over the top raid. The raid seemed to stem from a relatively common October 11, 2010, warning letter from the FDA that let the company know it needed to clean up some of the labeling on its products and website. Cole’s legal team began working on the alterations and informed the FDA. These types of letters are serious and meant to help the company to comply, creating a sense of teamwork not enemy versus enemy. But when we went to the FDA to ask about the raid, they refused comment. Turbosonic manager Denise Jiminez came to work and saw the other employees standing by their cars. “I started reading labels on their vests: FBI, FDA, IRS.” Denise knew that, “Maxam was sent a warning letter way back, but I wondered what they were doing at TurboSonic?” She walked into the office and all desks were packed with agents. They looked at her. One said, “Don’t sit down. Come sit in the back room. License, please.” Denise sat “with an officer for an interrogation for 20 minutes.” “They took all of our customer files … downloaded and broke our hard drives. If they couldn’t take it off, they would rip it out of the computer. It looked like a hurricane went through our offices. I thought they had full control. I didn’t know any better.” She thought, “Well, it’s the government; they’re authority.” Says Cole, “As you know we have been selling our supplements to thousands of dedicated customers for over a decade, with few complaints and certainly no ill effects but with a steady stream of appreciative notes from our customers. Indeed our

bankers have told my lawyer that they have rarely seen such a satisfied customer base measured by the remarkably low charge-back rate, i.e., those customers who, after paying for something by credit card, decide to reverse the charge because they don’t like what they bought. Indeed we thought we were one of those small businesses that government politicians are always saying they want to protect, because we employ about a dozen people in all, sustain those jobs and thus help the economy by selling a product that many, many people truly love and appreciate. So great is the appreciation that many hundreds of our customers had sent us testimonials for us to print and post on our websites, telling the public how well our products have worked for them and their loved ones in various ways. “However, in October 2010 we at Maxam Labs received a FDA warning letter telling us that even if the testimonials we post are absolutely true, the FDA does not like them and we must remove them. We were surprised that the government could or even would want to curtail such honest communications. But, we responded to the warning letter within several days by taking down all the many testimonials. At great expense we also hired FDA compliance attorney to re-label all products so that in all respects we could do things as the FDA wished. While we did this, we took our website down for six months just to be sure we were not offending the FDA. Our customers kept using our products—at least that part had not changed. “Then on April 7, 2011, the FDA, the FBI, and the IRS, along with a contingent of U.S. marshals, raided us. Four locations were raided simultaneously without warning: my home, my Gym, Maxam Labs and Turbosonic USA. Eight federal warrants had been issued charging, “money laundering” and “racketeering.” In total the agents took about $2 million worth of assets, including Turbosonic machines, Maxam products, money and the contents of the safe in my home. They also took more than 220 boxes of files, customer records, invoices, and personal files, including files marked, “Attorney Client Privileged Information.” “All computer files on all computers and servers were downloaded or the hard drives were removed and taken. Incidentally, this included the files and property of TurboSonic, USA, which sells our sonic exercise machine, manufactured in Korea and imported with all appropriate import approvals, including those from the FDA. Yet Turbo sonic had received absolutely no FDA warning letter. “Then, in what can only be called a terrible

waste of taxpayer money, all of our products were repeatedly tested for narcotics and other controlled substances. The federal chemist who performed those test has reported that no illegal substances were found, not a trace.” Notwithstanding this, to date nothing has been returned other than the files marked “attorney client privileged information,” which took four months to be returned. Next, on September 28, 2011, the government struck again. This time it went into five business bank accounts and personal accounts and seized all the money in them. “Finally, a small local bank allowed us to open an account so we have stayed alive.” Next, in December 2011 the government struck again, this time seizing a home he had purchased for his daughter in Northern California, and seizing a company pick-up truck they use for moving the Turbosonic machines in the Oregon and Washington area. So where do we stand today? “After over a year of raids, bank deposit and property seizures, the gutting of the websites, and the closing of their banking operations, the armed raid, and having the FBI, IRS, and the FDA charging around a half-dozen, unarmed law-abiding citizens who work for us as if they were heavily armed terrorists, we are surviving. There are no drugs in our products, we have worked to comply with the FDA—which by the way recently came into our offices for an FDA GMP compliance inspection, and made suggestions that we are following to the letter. There are no federal crimes justifying this incredible overkill. “The feds know that they cannot keep all that they seized, valued at about $2 million, by simply showing that we previously violated some FDA regulation. The law does not allow that. In order to keep what they have taken from us, literally our life’s work, they must go to court and prove that we have committed fraud on our customers and used the United States mails or interstate wire communications to do so. They did so, with great fanfare by filing a complaint alleging mail fraud/wire fraud. “To fight this injustice, we hired a former federal prosecutor from Boston, John Markham of Markham & Read, who has had 30 years of experience prosecuting and defending fraud cases, teaching law and advising on FDA matters. He immediately filed denials of all the charges, demanded a jury trial and asked for the entire process to be on a fast track. Incredibly, the government wants to move slowly now.

Markham asked for a trial in May, the government wants to wait until at least November, incredibly saying they need more time to prove their case.” “It has now been over 20 months since the great raid, and as we learned in the deposition process, this federal investigation has been ongoing since April 2010 — 32 months ago. To this date I have never been questioned, audited, asked to give a statement, or even deposed. Just standing by, trying to stay in business and watching the federal government slowly destroy my businesses of 22 years, that have only helped people, brought millions of dollars into our small Oregon town, and I must say, paid plenty in taxes. Cole says, “This whole business reminds me of the wicked Red Queen in Alice in Wonderland, who started the trial of Alice in that landmark story with the decree: ‘Verdict now, trial later!’ I must say that, just like Alice in Wonderland, I feel like I have fallen through a crazy rabbit hole to a land unlike the one I thought I lived in, where people were not even given a trial before their assets are taken from them at gunpoint. My lawyer has said he is eager for this trial where the government will have to prove the fraud they have claimed or give back all our property. The sooner this trial the better.” Maxam Labs continues to stay in business, bolstered by the loyalty of tens of thousands of customers who have seen the results themselves from PCA. But the real issues of health and medical freedom must be defended. As Martin Luther King, Jr., observed, “Where there is injustice for one, there is ■ injustice for all.”

These candy-colored laundry packets were introduced in the U.S. market in 2010, and multiple manufacturers now sell them. Pods make laundry more convenient. nificant number of them experienced gastrointestinal and respiratory distress, as well as mental status changes.

CASE REPORTS FROM THE CDC Charlotte, North Carolina—In early May 2012, the Carolinas Poison Center received reports of two critically ill infants who had been exposed to laundry pods. The first patient was aged 20 months and was found spitting after having ingested the liquid contents of a punctured laundry detergent pod. Within 10 minutes, the patient developed respiratory distress and began vomiting profusely. He then became unresponsive and exhibited seizure-like activity. The infant was then intubated and later found to have a right perihilar infiltrate on chest radiography. But within 36 hours of exposure, the patient improved and was able to be discharged. The second patient, a 15-month-old, was brought to an emergency department due to profuse vomiting. The infant was found to have a depressed sensorium and required intubation for airway protection. The breathing tube was removed six hours later. The child's chest radiograph was clear, and he was discharged 24 hours after the exposure. Poison center staff members followed up with the child's parents four days later and the only complaint was a sore throat. Thankfully, both infants survived because emergency aid was available. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania—In early May 2012, the Poison Control Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia received notification of a 17-month-old boy who had bitten into a laundry detergent pod and soon began to vomit. He developed marked somnolence and respiratory distress, requiring intubation for one day. In early June, a 10-month-old girl was sent into an ICU with vomiting, difficulty breathing and drooling after biting into a laundry detergent pod. The infant underwent an emergency endoscopy after having been found to have epiglottic swelling. She was treated with racemic epinephrine and steroids, but did not require intubation. Both

CAUTION All household cleaning products have the potential to cause illness. But exposure to laundry pods is becoming an increasing health concern for a vulnerable population. The CDC notes, “It remains unclear whether the significant adverse health effects observed with laundry detergent pod exposures relate to unique ingredients, differences in pH or other chemical properties (e.g., concentration), or the delivery mechanism.” What is clear, though, is that something needs to be done. It’s alarming to see that major brands advertise these candy-colored laundry and dishwashing pods on television. Why I Purchased a Sunlighten Sauna

y book Diet for a Poisoned Planet details pesticides and industrial chemicals in our foods and beverages and how to eliminate them from

your body. One of the key proven methods is sauna. I took more than 30 days of saunas consecutively after learning about the high levels of DDT in my own body due to eating fish contaminated

Plaque is a sticky substance made of bacteria, mucus and food debris that occurs on exposed parts of the teeth. he name MaMa Jean’s comes from Susie Farbin’s mother, Jean Farbin, as she is the one who planted the healthy seed, and Diana Hicks' mother, Loweta Hicks, aka “MaMa.” “I worked with my mom at a store 60 miles from here,” explains Susie. “A lot of people were driving 120 miles round trip to come to the store for bulk foods and lower prices. The square footage was larger than the population of the town. If we can make it work here, then we can work in a town of a hundred thousand.” Susie teamed up with her friend Diana, who also wanted to bring a health food store to their community. It wasn’t long before the duo opened their first store in 2002, and they haven’t looked back since. Due to high customer demand, they opened a second location in a green shopping center in 2008, expanded their original location, and plan to open a third location—the largest one yet! Owner Angie Opry has been engrained in the store long before taking the helm. “I got my degree in home economics and took nutrition courses, and I loved my part-time job at Fiesta. I like to cook and eat healthfully and interact with customers. This was the perfect niche for me,” explains Angie. After she graduated, she kept working at the store, treating it as her own and growing along with the store. “I bought the store about nine years ago, but we have been in business for 36 years.” They initially leased a small 2,000-square-foot space in a strip mall, but about two years ago Angie purchased a much larger building in midtown. “We added a café that has vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options, expanded to include organic meats, produce and frozen goods, and grew from three to 10 employees.” Angie is very particular about the brands that line Fiesta’s shelves. “I handpick everything,” she says. According to Dr. Lon Jones, author of No More Allergies, Asthma or Sinus Infections, this discrepancy has less to do with temperature than with humidity. In addition to filtering and cleaning the air we breathe, the nose warms and humidifies it. We get most of the fluid needed for this warming and humidifying by drinking plenty of water, but the environment plays a role as well: the airway surface fluid that helps our cilia and mucus do their job is replenished in moist air and reduced in dry air. It’s not just that the air turns chilly that causes cold and flu season; it’s also that it gets dry. One of the most important things we can do to support our health during cold and flu season, or any time of year, is to drink more water. According to research published in the November 2004 issue of Acta Otolaryngol, using a daily saline nasal spray can prevent cold symptoms in adults. In the study*, 60 young adults used daily nasal spray with saline for 10 weeks and then recorded their symptoms for another 10 weeks. The subjects who used the spray 60 percent of the time reported an average 6.4 days of nasal secretion and/or blocked nose, a significant decrease from 11 days during the observation period. Moreover, they averaged 0.7 episodes of upper respiratory tract infection compared with 1.0 episodes during the observation period.
