Teenagers Rock
T
his is a very exciting issue for me. This issue marks the 13th anniversary of Whole Living Journal. That means WLJ is officially a ʽteenagerʼ ~ Yikes! Actually, itʼs perfect timing. I have two teenage daughters and have been up to my eyeballs in teenage energy the past several years. Iʼve recently been learning terms like ʽfangirlʼ (a girl going crazy over a band or celebrity...in my 15 year oldʼs case, weʼre talking serious fangirl over the hit group One Direction. I gotta admit, they are pretty cute.) and ʽon fleekʼ (a term meaning ʽon pointʼ or ʽvery good,ʼ used often to reference oneʼs eyebrows, i.e. “Her eyebrows are on fleek.” Um, why eyebrows are suddenly all the rage? Donʼt ask me.) So, although teenagers are known for the angst they cause their parents, Iʼve discovered theyʼre kinda great at running some pretty cool Life Force Energy. Every day is an adventure. Theyʼve got nothinʼ but stars in their eyes for the future ahead and the unlimited possibilities they sense before them. Iʼve never been more convinced of this parallel energy between teenagers and WLJ as when I read Kathryn Martin Ossegeʼs article in this issue, ʽWhen 13 is a Lucky Number.ʼ Kathryn is the founding publisher and editor of WLJ. She was at the helm of creating every issue and running all other logistics of producing and distributing the magazine for the first five years. She has continued to remain involved as a guardian angel for this sweet and powerful community resource. Skilled at recognizing trends, she has offered timely suggestions for how we might make the publication and website better. Most recently, she shared her vision of a Facebook column, which we debuted last issue. Weʼve received rave reviews from readers about it, so once again, she was on fleek. Thank you Kathryn. (And thank you readers.) In her article she describes how much our world and community have changed in the past 13 years. I learned some facts of which I had been completely unaware. Reading her article gave me a whole new perspective on how far we have come in our acceptance of holistic methods as effective treatments for mind, body, spirit concerns. In fact, dare I say, not only are we not skeptical any longer, but we are now actually embracing alternative methods for health and healing. I have immense respect for Kathrynʼs courage to pioneer a publication like WLJ in the societal climate of 13 years ago. And, yes, wow, things have changed. In January, a leading trend forecasting company, WGSN, announced in their newsletter that “spending on spirituality and spiritual wellness has gone up, with the mind and body industry growing to $390 billion (annually).” Their professional advice for businesses was to begin adopting practices and services to cater to this trending industry...because that is where the money is going.
So here we sit, 13 years after the beginning days of WLJ, and now everything this magazine embodies is exactly what the world is craving. Can you feel the teenage excitement and anticipation of all the unlimited possibilities that lie ahead? I can. If youʼve considered partnering or advertising with us before, thereʼs never been a better time than now. Get your teenager-ness on and envision a bright future. Consider joining us in meeting the growing interests of our community and world. Thereʼs a global desire to connect, and thatʼs what we do. We use every resource available to connect our readers with the resources and inspiration theyʼre looking for. Through our print and online publication, over the airwaves with Waves of a New Age on Tuesdays, and at live events such as Infusion Cincinnati every month, we strive to connect. There is not enough space on this page for all the words I would need to express my gratitude to the advertisers who continue to make producing WLJ possible. Without their support, there would be no WLJ. In her article, Kathryn mentions some of her earliest supporters, and amazingly, they are still supporting us today. Iʼd like to give a big shout-out of thanks to our longest standing and most loyal advertisers: Anne Steffen, WholeCare, Synergy, Victor Paruta, Dr. Bosma, Spirit Wind, Stillpoint, Gary Matthews, Michelle Griffith, Foot Solutions, Joanne Miller, Judi Winall, Polly Giblin, Patti Kessler, Patricia Garry, FourWinds, Joanne Franchina and Rose Vanden Eynden. THANK YOU! We couldnʼt do it without you. Also, Iʼd like to thank some other supporting players without whom WLJ would not be what it is today: Kendra Niese, Teri Dettone, Francine Haydon, Heidi Bright, Bev and Carl Fisher, Don Buechner, and Jon Robinson. Seriously, what would I do without you?! One of the themes prevalent in the growing spiritual movement is the idea that ʽThere is nothing that doesnʼt matter.ʼ Itʼs ALL important. Every energy exchange, every thought, every word spoken, every choice...it all matters. This is illustrated in the article by Nicole Lee in this issue, ʽHealing Cosmetologist.ʼ It was definitely intriguing and it made a lot of sense when I read how important our relationship is with the person we allow to touch our hair. Speaking of thereʼs nothing that doesnʼt matter, every aspect of every issue of WLJ is created in consciousness. In this particular issue the two books we reviewed are personally special to me. Reading Silence was like going on a retreat. A portal to silence literally exists on each page; I couldnʼt wait to share it with you. JB Glossinger was at the Hay House Writerʼs Workshop where I entered the book contest and won. He signed his book contract right after the workshop weekend. Seeing his book released gives me great hope for mine. 13 is just the beginning! Love to all,

13 Lucky When is a
Number by Kathryn Martin Ossege
ou’re reading the 13th anniversary edition of Whole Living Journal. I founded the magazine in 2003 to connect our holistic and conscious-minded community. After I'd served as editor and publisher for five years, I decided to pass the baton. Divine intervention and synchronicity teamed up to bring Tara L. Robinson to the magazine’s helm where she remains today. To my delight (but not surprise) Tara immersed herself wholeheartedly in the magazine’s continued success, passionately fanning the embers I’d ignited thirteen years earlier.
Y
A Different World 13 Years Ago
The world was quite different back then. Holistic and wellness modalities were considered by the general public to be ineffective, even dangerous. Health insurance providers didn’t cover “new age” products or services. If you visited a holistic practitioner, you paid for it out of your own pocket. One of the first people I approached about advertising in WLJ was Jack Armstrong, a chiropractor who owns WholeCare in Blue Ash. Jack was well-established—he’d been in practice for two decades—and was highly regarded in the community. I was stunned when he confided that he intentionally “flew under the radar” because many people thought chiropractors were a bunch of quacks. I chuckle as I recall this, knowing that most insurance plans currently cover chiropractic services. Massage therapy is another widely accepted holistic service. It wasn’t always that way. For decades legitimate practitioners battled the stigma created by those who used the word ‘massage’ as a code for sexual services. Massage parlors, particularly those in Newport KY, were often raided by the vice squad.
Overturning the Acupuncture Laws in KY
Acupuncture also has become more mainstream. In the state of Kentucky that’s due to the efforts of Mimi Tagher, a licensed acupuncturist who resides there. In 2003 she wanted to open a practice in her home state but was prohibited. At that time acupuncture services in Kentucky were only legal when administered by an MD. Determined to have this law overturned, Mimi and a fellow acupuncturist led a statewide movement. I participated in their
conference calls with other acupuncturists and the lobbyist they hired. The group’s passion was tangible. It wasn’t a question of “if” they would succeed; it was only a question of when. There followed several years of “no” votes by the state legislature, but the group held strong. Their perseverance paid off. The law was overturned in 2006. Mimi and her business partner celebrated by opening Synergy Holistic Center in Florence.
Alive and Well in Greater Cincinnati
Just as the holistic community has evolved, so has Whole Living Journal. Tara has steered the magazine through one recession and the challenge of several WLJ-Wannabe publications. Additionally, she’s expanded it into a multi-media outreach including the community gatherings of Infusion and joining Judy Peace in hosting the local radio show “Waves of a New Age.” Whole Living Journal is alive and well, and our community is thriving. We’ve come a long way, baby. Now that’s reason to celebrate. About the author: Kathryn Martin Ossege, founding editor and publisher of Whole Living Journal, now fills her days playing with her grandkids and writing. She remains committed to mastering the art of growing a lazy bone. kossege@yahoo.com Editorʼs Note: Thank you Kathryn! We wouldnʼt be here now without you, your vision, and your dedication to the community.

Cosmetologist
Healing

O
ur hair is an antenna that transmits and receives thoughts outside our five senses. It carries vibrations of energy within each strand, containing information about an individual’s spirit that is often transferred through the power of touch. Because it is connected to the head/crown chakra (the energy space between body and spirit), it is sensitive and holds vital links to spiritual wisdom, knowledge and even healing. We are physical beings having human experiences. The physical body is a vehicle for moving and operating in this earthly realm. The energy centers of the body are called chakras. There are seven main chakras that control energy flow through the body and auric field. Here’s a list of the seven chakras and their connections to the human experiences of life, in order from the first chakra located at the base of the spine through the seventh chakra located at the top of the head: Root Chakra - related to issues of survival and material needs. Sacral Chakra - related to creativity, physical desires/addiction. Solar Plexus - related to issues of power and control. Heart Chakra - related to issues of love. Throat Chakra - related to speaking one’s truth. Third Eye Chakra - related to intuition. Crown Chakra - related to receiving direct thoughts from the Divine.
The crown chakra is located exactly where its name suggests, at the crown of the head, the location of the “soft spot” on infants. The crown chakra governs cosmic consciousness - our connection to spiritual wisdom. The head/crown chakra is the space a hair stylist touches most on their clients. Massaging the head/ crown chakra stimulates blood flow to the energy space of the scalp to the brain. Having the ability to activate one’s brain energy flow to a positive, healing flow of energy is a gift not to be underestimated. A conscious hair stylist is aware of the energy/power transferred from the stylist to the customer, and vice versa. This energy is very powerful and can affect the stylist and client physically. When a cosmetologist becomes aware of this energy field, she or he will begin to attract customers in need of healing. Stylists who are aware of their special abilities have the power to bring in new energy and to program that energy (hair) with positive thoughts and affirmations. The consciousness a stylist holds influences the client’s energy field while the stylist works on the crown center. Additional-

ly, there is an exchange of energy within the words and vibration of the conversation. That’s why gossip is not wise. Instead, listening is ideal for a stylist so that she or he can fuel positive words back into the center of the customer’s crown chakra during conversation. As a client, pay attention to how you feel after your salon experience. Did your experience in the salon uplift your mood - or feed your fears? Be aware of the exchange of spirit and energy. As a cosmetologist, you have a major responsibility. Relaxing music and positive energy in the salon allows peace to dwell inside everyone’s thoughts. You have the power to create such peace. Tap into your true calling, Cosmetologist, become what God intended you to be…a Healer! Healing Cosmetologist, written by Nicole Lee, reveals insights on how to be successful in the business of beauty by understanding the power that lies in the hands of beauty professionals, how to read the energy of clients, insight on spirituality, sexual soul-ties, motherhood, relationships, affirmations and chakra healing. www.NicoleLee.me (See ad on page 6)

Herbal Enjoyment A Cup Closer to
Nature by Ande Schewe
oday is truly an amazing time to find an interest and be active in herbal medicine. At one time, explorers and spice traders searched the deep recesses of the earth and went through extreme measures to locate and move the choicest spices and herbs. Now access to all parts of the earth’s vast rich ecosystems is at our fingertips. We can import exotic botanical treasures from near and far at ridiculously affordable prices.
T
The Importance of Local Connection Although this is fascinating, we have discovered the importance of “local” connection and beneficial herbs. Foraging and gardening provided a way to find a perspective of our own beautiful, exotic and local ecosystem. Here in the Ohio River Valley we enjoy a rich landscape, diverse in its current ways and in its modern possibilities. As artists and gardeners, we can establish intentionally designed edible forests, rich in foods, medicines and more. In our local gardens, landscapes and farms we can now combine South American plants, Asian plants and Chinese medicinal herbs, Western European plants, Ayruvedic (an ancient medical treatise summarizing the Hindu art of healing and prolonging life) herbs, and local native indigenous plants of North America. As these plants infuse themselves into new ecosystems, it is up

to us now to discover and share the new traditions we derive from those ancient traditions that have melded together.
Practicing Ethical Wildcraft
With proper guidance, we can wander into the forest and seasonally discover wonderful tastes, flavors, and beneficial healing botanical friends. If we are mindful, we can harvest plenty, yet leave behind enough that the plants can regenerate themselves for future seasons and generations. This is how what is known as “ethical wildcraft” harvesting happens. Certain plants are deemed invasive, those we may aggressively harvest and find uses for. Other plants are endangered, and perhaps should be left alone and protected until they can regenerate populations. Most of the time the benefits found in these endangered herbs can be found in other plants we can cultivate in our gardens or find growing invasively.
Itʼs Always Tea Time Perhaps tea is the easiest way to appreciate most herbs. Truly there is no wrong way to enjoy herbal tea, but there are theories on the art of infusing for proper medicinal extraction. Roots and barks often are decocted, meaning they are boiled in water. Leafy herbs and flowers on the other hand are steeped in water that was brought to a

boil. Herbal Tea (also known as “Tisanes”) can be enjoyed in many different ways. Hot tea should be consumed mindfully, creating a sense of peace, and can be an amazing stress reliever. Iced tea on a hot day can be extra cooling, and is a wonderful liquid base for smoothies. We can enjoy the added flavors and health benefits we feel from the consumption of herbal teas throughout the year. Herbal teas can even be used as a soup stock.
Expand Your Palette
Let your mind’s palette be creative and go beyond. Find your way to connect with the plants around you, and allow some healthy plants into your modern cuisine tonight.

3 Secrets to Attract Your Soulmate by Maureen Hollmeyer
hat makes the world go around? What is the most sought after, most desired, intangible object that can’t be bought?
W
putting up a sign that says ‘Do Not Enter.’ Once you let go of the past you can begin moving forward with your future. Let go of the old thoughts and let new positive feelings enter. This is a signal to the universe that says “I am ready!”
LOVE. Everybody wants love. Everybody needs love. Everybody is in search for that wonderful, profound and endorphin induced chemical rush. Some may try to buy, bribe, steal or cheat for love. But that isn’t unconditional or healthy love. You know who is an expert at Love? Adele. Her new album, 25, made history in sales because she takes the listeners along on her love journey. Her ups and downs, loses and regrets, her triumphs and joys. Everybody can relate to these kinds of feelings. I can relate. I’ve divorced, healed my heart…and attracted my soulmate. I’ve been happily married for the last 10 years because I followed these three secrets.
Secret 1: Free your Heart
Over the years our hearts break, feelings get hurt, we feel bitter and we don’t feel like trying to love again. But we are only holding ourselves back from the love relationship we want by
Secret 2: Find your Soul
We must know ourselves, our passions, our likes and dislikes. We attract people who are like ourselves. If you love freely; you will attract someone with an open heart. If you are open to possibilities; you will attract someone with an open agenda. Once your soul is happy and healthy, you will attract the same.
Secret 3: Believe in Love
In order to attract love you have to believe it exists. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t been in love yet; what matters is that you believe it can happen. Be open to the possibilities and believe there is someone special for everyone. This should make you happy knowing you could meet your soulmate tomorrow or the next day or the next. EatPray Love Made Me Do It!
by Jen Flickdor
ow did this happen? is a question I’ve been asked a lot lately. Understandably, people want to know how my essay was selected from nearly 2,000 submissions for the 10th anniversary commemorative book Eat Pray Love Made Me Do It. The answer is layered. First of all, it happened because of deep connection. Eat Pray Love remains one of my life’s most influential books. Because of this, my submission was pure. It was not a result of thirsting for fame or recognition. How can you ever properly thank someone for giving you the strength to become “you”? Writing my essay and thinking possibly Eat Pray Loveʼs author Elizabeth Gilbert would read it and realize her affect on me was its own reward. Secondly, it happened because of focused commitment. When I learned of the opportunity via a social media post I just “happened” to see, I was in the midst of three previous writing deadlines. I promised myself I would finish these ahead of schedule, and only then check the submission guidelines for Eat Pray Love Made Me Do It. If all timetables aligned, I would go for it full throttle! The third layer? Divine Timing. Upon submitting the aforementioned three pieces, I opened the link for Eat Pray Love Made Me Do It and learned I had a mere ten days to get ‘er done. The Universe was screaming, “The time is NOW!” The next steps required a sense of humor. I wrote from my soul, giving it everything I had. I stayed up late and woke up early to get the writing finished. I scrupulously edited, determined to tell my story within the 1500 word count stipulation. Victoriously I hit the submit button, only to find out 24 hours later that the publisher extended the deadline by another whole month! This is when I stopped, dropped and laughed. I looked up to the heavens and said out loud, “Good One!” The Divine loves to experience joy and laughter through us, so I obliged. The fifth layer was a practice of trust. Once submitted, I fell into the abyss. Who was receiving and reading it? When and how would I get an answer? Would Elizabeth Gilbert herself be the one reading the words I had so thoughtfully crafted? The answer to all of these questions came in one word…trust. To save my sanity, I had to surrender the questions and trust that the right person was receiving and reading it. Trust that I would get the right answer at the right time in the right way. Trust that Elizabeth Gilbert would realize her impact on me. It wasn’t always easy, but I’m thankful for the
H
wise voice that kept whispering for me to,“Trust…” Following the layer of trust came euphoria. I received the news that my essay was among the ones chosen for the book - on the perfect day, at the perfect time. I was transported to the scene from Eat Pray Love when, as Liz and her friend are driving across Kansas, she finds out her husband had finally signed the divorce papers in New York. Like that moment in the car for Liz, I felt the power of cosmic signatures and their mark on my life. A seventh layer has proven to be the most prolific. In fact, it’s been more of a lesson than a layer. It is the constant message to be brave. Shortly after the euphoria, a palpable panic set in. “Oh My God, people all over the world will read this. More importantly, people within my world will read this! What if they hate it or judge me or turn away?” (Remember, I actually wrote this for Liz, not necessarily for everyone…) I’ve learned it takes courage to write authentically and then stand in it, fully exposed. I’ve also learned to be brave enough to ask for what I want during the editing process with one of the largest publishing companies in the world. Beyond this, I’ve learned to make friends with fearlessness in order to say, “Yes!” to radio interviews, book signings, and public speaking engagements. With each step, I’m learning to be brave and answer the calling of my soul, as opposed to cowering in the corner with self-doubt and fear. This brings me to the very important layer of truth. You see, the truth of my journey with Eat Pray Love is that it won’t stop with my essay in the book. Eat Pray Love perpetually fans my inner flame. It will continually inspire me to connect to my passions and commit to their manifestations. For all of my life I will recognize divine synchronicities and trust them to guide me to my highest truth. I will choose to be brave and follow the glitter trail. And throughout it all, I will be open to the joy and laughter that the Universe seeks to deliver me. Eat Pray Love will always make me do “IT”. FourWinds Academy Trains Future
Energy Healers by Vivien Schapera
n this day and age, members of the public are increasingly seeking out the help of Energy Healers for dealing with their lives.
I
But what exactly is an “Energy Healer?” Strictly speaking, anyone who helps someone heal, by unblocking or restoring the energy flow, and stimulating the self-healing mechanism, that is innate to all living organisms, is an “energy healer.” That would include every kind of medical, paramedical and CAM (Complementary and Alternative Healing) professional, from the allopathic doctor to the minister who does layingon-of-hands. In our age of specialists, “Energy Healer” has become a catchall term, referring to practitioners who engage nonphysical, or “metaphysical,” sources to channel healing energy. People can become “Energy Healers” in a weekend, by attending a myriad of assorted courses, from Reiki to Crystal Healing. The most prevalent model for successfully becoming an Energy Healer has been to train in a recognized modality, such as Massage Therapy, gaining an accredited certification (LMT) and then adding on (weekend) metaphysical courses to develop the skills to work as an Energy Healer.

Living W h o l e Journal
The Birth of a New Academy Identifying this trend, Vivien Schapera founded FourWinds Academy for the Healing Arts & Sciences in 1999, to address an emerging need: the need to establish a new, recognizable profession, with meaningful standards -- The Energy Healer. An Energy Healer needs just as thorough a foundation of knowledge, in multiple subjects, as any other professional. These subjects should be taught in a systematic, integrated manner by experienced instructors. In addition to the academic and theoretical knowledge, students need time for skill development and time to practice these skills, under supervision. Pioneering a field requires devotion and hard work. Why go to all this trouble? Vivien believes that with the decline of the General Practitioner going handin-hand with the rise of the Specialist, there will be an increasing need for a holistic generalist, who is a) able to spend time with the client and b) able to look at the whole person, evaluating the physical, physiological, emotional, psychological, expressive, mental and spiritual needs. As in the days of yore, the generalist will have the training to help, but when the generalist cannot address any one of these needs, then

an appropriate referral to a specialist should be made.
Seventeen Years Later and...
FourWinds Academy’s program has been developed over seventeen years, responding to the needs and requests of the “Healers in Training.” In the Level 1 Healer Certification Program, students learn 4 subjects: Energy Healing, Intuition, Crystal Healing and Shamanism. We are looking into the future, and building the profession of Energy Healer, so that we will be ready to meet the need. About the author: Vivien Schapera trained initially in clinical psychology before becoming a teacher of the Alexander Technique. She works in private practice as a teacher and Energy Healer, and has founded two schools for professional training: Alexander Technique of Cincinnati (1993) and FourWinds Academy for the Healing Arts & Sciences (1999). Nothing New Here
by Dale Schlundt, M.A.
ost everyone, at some point in their lives, questions if their work is significant. It’s the feeling that what I am doing is not unique, there will be no lasting effect. I have received confirmation of that feeling from editors on articles I have written. I recall one who sent a few responses from the editorial team along with the rejection letter, “Great points, but nothing new here.” It still hurts. Of course, some have been more impressed than not. Nevertheless, what I strive for is to create something valuable, both in my writing and my teaching profession. Perhaps not even something new, only a new way of viewing the old.

Presidential Candidates All Want the Same Thing Let’s consider the differences between the candidates seeking their party’s presidential nomination discussing immigration reform. They are all arguing for the same relative concept with small variations: Legalized immigration as opposed to complete lack of control over who crosses our borders. However, what does every political candidate tell you they can do? That he or she can “do it better.” And you know what? Perhaps so. Why not?

have been taught to be inheritors. To inherit information, rules, culture, and so on, without adding to them. While in school, regardless of what level, how many times did your educators ask for your opinion as opposed to giving their own? When you left your institution of education, did your employer focus on making an asset of what makes you unique, or did they promote conformity in all regards and immediately offer a copy of the company handbook? We are taught how to be pragmatic, rather than when to challenge the status quo.
Reimagining History
The Jamestown Rediscovery Project is the perfect example of the opportunities for which I am suggesting we should all strive to find. 2012 was an intriguing year, the project found the remains of a young girl who had been cannibalized during our nation’s earliest days. Not a common practice in our first successful English colony, this incident is something historians already knew about through primary sources. Though today, anyone can write anything, just take a look at Twitter. So now we have widely and publically corroborated that evidence so that what was previously considered as semi-truth or potential fact now has a much higher probability of being considered factual by most people. Our understanding of our nation’s 400 year old history is changing because there are those who do not simply accept the status quo, but feel they can both learn from, as well as add to, the knowledge of our world. Every profession needs these minds. Do not only inherit your world, create it. About the author: Dale Schlundt, M.A. holds a Master’s Degree in Adult Education with a concentration in American History from the University of Texas at San Antonio. He is currently an Adjunct Professor for Palo Alto College and Northwest Vista College. Dale has two new books available, Tracking Life’s Lessons: Through Experiences, History, and a Little Interpretation and Education Decoded (A Collection of My Writings) now available on Amazon.

World Renowned Spiritual Teacher Thich Nhat Hahn’s New Book Silence Invokes Inner Peace We spend a lot of our lives on a quest for happiness, running from one thing to another, worrying about the past and being anxious about the future. All the while the world around us is overflowing with the wonder and contentment we seek. This beauty calls to us every day, yet we rarely are in the position to listen. If we don’t have silence in ourselves because our minds and body are full of noise, we won’t be able to hear beauty’s call. In his most recent book, Silence: The Power of Quiet in a World Full of Noise (HarperOne; Trade Paperback; 2015), Thich Nhat Hanh—known widely as “Thay” or teacher -guides us on a path to cultivate the calm within ourselves, and experience the profound power of quiet amid our noisy everyday lives. In this book he writes: “Silence is essential. We need silence just as much as we need air, just as much as plants need light. If our minds are crowded with words and thoughts, there is no space for us.” The gift of silence doesn’t require hours upon hours of solitary meditation or an existing practice of any kind. www.thichnhathanhfoundation.org

No Bones About It Herbs ‘n Such, by Mimi Tagher
o you or anyone you know have osteoporosis? Are you at risk for osteoporosis? The numbers have risen dramatically over the last 50 years for many reasons. First, the pasteurization of milk destroys many of the vitamins and minerals that were once available with raw milk. Second, medications such as antacids affect the absorption and or availability of calcium and other minerals, and are being used in higher doses and for much longer periods of time. Once started, people take these drugs for not only years, but decades. Third, our American diets get worse each year, as does the nutritional value of our food, and the quality of our soil. That said, it is easy to see why our golden years can often be tarnished.
D
It’s Not Just About Calcium
When we think of strong, healthy bones we think about calcium; but there is much more to the equation. Calcium is a game of co-factors - it doesn’t do much by itself. Remember, for calcium to be absorbed there needs to be an acidic environment - like in your stomach. Your stomach is supposed to be acidic, with a pH of about 1, to digest food properly and to allow for the absorption of minerals like calcium and iron. If you are taking antacids or proton pump inhibitors, you are very likely deficient in calcium and at a greater risk for osteoporosis.
the tissues and bones. You also need vitamin K, which helps plug the calcium in to the bone matrix. In addition, you need a healthy endocrine system, because thyroid and parathyroid glands release hormones that help regulate the amount of calcium in the bloodstream. As you can see, bone strength depends on more than just calcium. Bones are actually composed of more than a dozen minerals. If you focus on just calcium, or worse, only drinking milk or taking an antacid, you will likely weaken your bones and increase the risk of osteoporosis.
The Good News The absolute best way to achieve healthy bones is a diet rich in fresh, raw whole foods that maximize minerals so your body has the raw materials it needs to do what it was meant to do - build a strong and healthy you! It is more likely your body can use calcium correctly if it is plant derived calcium. Good sources include raw milk from pasture raised cows (that eat calcium-rich plants), leafy green vegetables, the pith of citrus fruits, and wheatgrass, to name just a few. If you have questions about your need for calcium, check with your holistic practitioner. There are many signs and symptoms and simple in office tests that will help determine your needs for supplementation. Remember, use only pharmaceutical grade, whole food supplements and you will move strong and healthy into your golden years.
The Next Step
If and when calcium is digested, it needs vitamin D to help move it from the gut and into the blood stream - so adequate amounts of vitamin D are required for the proper utilization of calcium. If you are low in vitamin D, there is a good possibility you will be at a greater risk of osteoporosis in your later years. Once calcium is in the blood, vitamin F, or essential fatty acids, is needed to move the calcium from the blood and into

Opening Intuitive
the
Heart Channel by Veenaa Saynana
pening up to our intuitive abilities may be the most important gift we ever give ourselves. We are all psychic. The degree to which our abilities are developed depends on many factors and variables. We enhance our intuition by honoring and acknowledging our gift. Diet, detoxifying from heavy emotions, and cultivating a spiritual practice that includes regular meditation and yoga can contribute toward enhancing natural psychic abilities. Our psychic capacities are directly linked to our level of consciousness. In the Map of Consciousness, as described by Dr. David Hawkins, in his book Power vs. Force, consciousness is measured on a scale of 0-1000. Heavy emotions such as shame, guilt and anger measure between 20-100, an open, loving heart measures at 500, and bodhisattva consciousness which is about loving service to humanity measures between 700-1000. If our world is to become more loving and peaceful, it stands to reason that raising our collective consciousness is imperative. We all know deep within that we cannot go on the way we have because it is creating massive destruction. We cannot operate from a lower level of consciousness because our bodies suffer through illness and discomfort when we are out of alignment with our higher truth, especially when our logical minds are in conflict with our heart’s guidance. Society is structured to measure success in harsh terms that are not in alignment with our spirit’s gentle calling towards happiness, simplicity and service. Having an open heart is the first step in moving towards higher consciousness. When we hold anger, resentment and other heavy emotions, our metaphysical heart is scarred and our aura’s light is dimmed. When we are able to heal and have a wide-open heart, our energy can flow smoothly in order to activate the chakras above the heart, enabling us to access, perceive and communicate higher wisdom. Eastern mystics have developed advanced yogic skills called siddhis, which involve the mastery of heightened perception, telepathic abilities such as remote viewing and receiving divine guidance. My gurus taught me about the significance of the antakharana, a metaphysical conduit between the pineal and pituitary glands, which holds the memories, gifts and abilities of our past lives and also the ability to tap into vast reservoirs of wisdom held throughout the universe. My clients, who have experienced opening their antakharana, often report heightened states of psychic awareness, deep healing of childhood trauma and a greater sense of well-being. The pineal gland is calcified when overloaded with toxins, junk food and heavy emotions. The ankakharana’s abilities are
O
affected and it becomes difficult to access the higher realms of psychic skills. It is possible to decalcify the pineal gland through chelating, cleanses and detoxification products, psychic clearing, shamanic journeying, deep emotional releasing, meditation and prayer. This makes it easier to access our higher guidance and open to higher consciousness. Abilities such as psychometry, remote viewing, and telepathic communication are more easily developed once decalcification occurs and the heart channel is open. Shamanic journeying, with a skilful practitioner, can be very effective in clearing away deep-rooted psychosomatic issues because the subconscious realms are addressed bypassing the hypervigilant, conscious mind. An experienced teacher can guide the navigating of the higher and lower astral planes, which can sometimes be fearful experiences for the beginner who may be unable to interpret the received psychic input. Enhancing and developing our ‘siddhis’ can be a deeply rich and rewarding experience. I firmly believe that accessing higher states of consciousness is our planet’s answer to all the ills that assail us. Cultivating greater love in our hearts – so simple, yet so true - may be the solution to all that ails humanity and this precious home planet that we call Mother Earth. Living Your Life Psychically
Intuitive Insights, by Francine Haydon and Patricia Garry
sychic [si-kik] – adjective: 1) of or relating to the human soul or mind; mental (opposed to physical); 2) outside of natural or scientific knowledge; spiritual. In our society, the majority of us are taught how to use our minds and bodies through teachings/lessons, by following examples, doing physical exercises/sports, etc. We are taught to be logical, rational, practical and occasionally, even artistic and to think outside the box. But rarely are we taught to use our psychic or soul senses – clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience and intuition. Why? Think how much more we could accomplish if we would use our five physical senses – seeing, hearing, feeling, tasting and smelling – AND our four other psychic senses? A lot! Our psychic senses alert us to the unseen, unheard and unknown energies not able to be detected using our regular physical senses. They provide us with another whole layer of information to help us answer questions, solve problems and create the new and formerly unimaginable. These soul senses connect us with the spiritual aspect of our human existence and allow us to communicate with energies in other dimensions. They can help us learn not to fear those things which we cannot see or experience in physical form. Everyone is born with psychic or higher sensory perception skills, so why not use them? I don’t know about you, but I would prefer to have as much help and information as possible to deal with life’s issues. Life can be tough. But if you start living your life psychically, it can become easier, more enjoyable and more fulfilling. So an idea out of the blue pops into your mind – almost like it isn’t your own. For example, the thought to call a friend, being drawn to a specific spot to park your car, remembering an item you should pick up as you are leaving the house for
P
the day. Go ahead and do what you are being prompted to do. First of all, it will make your life simpler, because it will work. Secondly, when you honor your intuition – which is what you’re doing – it gets stronger and easier to read the next time. (Spiritual work takes practice, just like everything else.) It is your own thought – or rather, it is your Higher Self, the Universe, your right brain - which can see farther, faster, more holistically than your left brain. And don’t forget to say “Thanks” when everything works out. Gratitude is one of the best ways to build up your intuitive skills. Being grateful in advance is also important. Saying “Thanks” before events turn out perfectly, staying positive, picturing that win, all help to bring about the world in which you want to live, and the joy you want to feel. One of our favorite routines, before even getting out of bed, is to picture - in detail, with smiles and a happy heart - all the miracles you would like to experience before the end of the day. As each one happens, even more perfectly than you expected, keep putting out those grateful feelings. They will return to you multiplied, all through your day – and your life. For over a decade the Schewe family has been ethically wild harvesting, and exploring the broad diversity of botanical medicines and herbs that grow well here in the Ohio River Valley Eco-region. Along the way they have learned many things from wonderful teachers, experiences, and have shared much with many fellow colleagues and students willing to explore. More recently Lola’s Botanicals has formulated a unique local community of people interested in building their home herbal cabinet.
This group wants to be closer to nature, be a part of it, flow with the seasons, support knowledgeable guidance, and feel as healthy as they can. Lola’s calls this their CSH (Community Supported Herbalism) program. As part of this group you would have the choice of several box share subscriptions. These are a selection of Lola’s diverse herbal products that coincide with each season. A 12-Step
Program to
Simplicity by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer estselling author and beloved spiritual teacher Dr. Wayne Dyer, known as The Father of Motivation, has been widely missed since his death last year. Hay House Publishing continues to keep his work fresh and recently rebranded one of Dr. Dyerʼs most popular books Inspiration: Your Ultimate Calling and released Your Ultimate Calling: Living an Inspired Life. In this new version readers discover 12 of Dr. Dyerʼs secrets to living a life of simplicity and inner peace. Unclutter your life. You’ll feel a real rush of inspiration when you clear out stuff that’s no longer useful: If you haven’t worn it in the past year or two, recycle it for others to use. Get rid of old files that take up space and are seldom, if ever, needed. Donate unused items to a charitable organization. Clear your calendar of unwanted and unnecessary activities and obligations. If you’re unavailable for Spirit, you’re unlikely to know the glow of inspiration. God will indeed work with you and send you the guidance, and the people, you need, but if you’re grossly overscheduled, you’re going to miss these life-altering gifts. So don’t feel guilty about injecting a dose of leisure time into your daily routine. Be sure to keep your free time free. Be on the lookout for invitations to functions which inhibit your access to joyful inspiration. If cocktail parties, social gettogethers, fund-raising events, or even drinking-and-gossiping gatherings with friends aren’t really how you want to spend your free time, then don’t. Take time for meditation and yoga. Give yourself at least 20 minutes a day to sit quietly and make conscious contact with God. Return to the simplicity of nature. The fantasy to return to a less tumultuous life almost always involves living in the splendor of the mountains, the forests, the ocean or beside a lake. These are universal urges, since nature is created by the same Source as we are (we’re stardust, remember?). Put distance between you and your critics. Choose to align yourself with people who are like-minded in their search for simplified inspiration. You never need to defend yourself or your desires to anyone, as those inner feelings are Spirit speaking to you. Those thoughts are sacred, so don’t ever let anyone trample on them. Take some time for your health. Recall that your body is a sacred temple where you reside for this lifetime, so respect it by being an exerciser and a sensible eater.
B 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Play, play, play! Learn to play rather than work your way through life. I play onstage when I speak, and I’m playing now as I write. Slow down. Slow everything way down for a few moments right here and now. Slowly read these words. Slow your breathing down so that you’re aware of each inhalation and exhalation. Do everything you can to eschew debt. By going into debt, you’ll just add layers of anxiety onto your life. If you can’t afford it, let it go until you can. And remember the money you have in your possession is nothing but energy, so refuse to plug in to an energy system that’s not even there. Forget about the cash value. I try not to think about money too frequently because it’s been my observation that people who do so tend to think about almost nothing else. So do what your heart tells you will bring you joy, rather than determining whether it will be costeffective. Remember your spirit. When life tends to get overly complex, too fast, too cluttered, or too deadline oriented, stop and remember your own spirit. You’re headed for inspiration, a simple, peaceful place where you’re in harmony with the perfect timing of all creation.
