Letter from the Editor

Tara L. Robinson, editor@wholelivingjournal.com

Be Seen, Be Heard

I

find it funny that the smallest actions can carry an epicstory of self-excavation behind them. Seemingly insignificant decisions often serve as the impetus for deep discovery and self-growth. For those of us who are chronic self-analyzers, life is always interesting, a never ending adventure, because we are ceaselessly traversing the hills and valleys of our human psyche. For example, the simple decision to set-up a personal Facebook page can throw one headlong into an abyss of questioning one’s identity, measure of self-worth, the nature of public image, etc.. Not that I’m speaking from personal experience. Okay, yes, I’m totally speaking from personal experience. I recently, some would say finally, created a personal page. Amazing, I know. I’m only approximately a decade behind the rest of the modern world. Many people have inquired as to how I’ve been surviving. I know, right? Well, in any event, it seemed time to take the plunge. That’s the short story of how it came to be that I am now on Facebook as Tara L. Robinson. Now, for the rest of the story. Facing the monumental decision to be seen and heard on Facebook threw me full force into exploring the ultimate question of “Who am I?” I imagine this isn’t everyone’s experience, but it was mine. It wasn’t just the idea of looking Facebook in the face, it was a combination of a lot of things. My life seems to work that way. When it is time for me to learn a lesson, I often find myself in the middle of a perfect storm which swirls around me in utter chaos until I eventually emerge into the light in perfect clarity. Books I’ve owned for years, which previously contained just words on a page, suddenly come to life and speak directly into my very soul. Let me back-up and start from the beginning, you see, I was blessed to be raised by two amazing parents, each teaching and representing polar opposites of the values and qualities I hold most dear. My mom is soulful. She’s intuitive, deeply spiritual, and very emotionally driven. My dad, on the other hand, is a realist. He’s logical, linear, practical. They both are my biggest supporters. I’m so lucky. This divine cosmic soup has created in me quite an interesting mix of varying interests and perspectives on life. In many ways, I would say I’m a little bit of everything. I’m definitely soulful and intuitive like my mom, a natural counselor and self-excavator. However, I’m also practical like my dad and demand logical explanations for what I believe. Before I agree to claim anything to be true, I must experience it to be true in my own life. It must be self-evident to me. Although I appreciate all these facets of who I am, sometimes they appear to be in conflict with the outside world. In the spiritual world, there is judgment for over-thinking things. In the logical world, there is judgment for claiming to know things via intuition. There are pockets of people in my life who know me as living in one or the other, but not many people know me as inhabiting both worlds. So there I was, facing Facebook and facing my fears. How do I represent myself? What if the people from high school see what I’ve been up to in my spiritual life and think I’ve lost my marbles? What if those in my spiritual circle see I “like” Ayn Rand and deem me a cold-hearted objectivist? I found myself wanting to scream,

“Let me explain!” A wise friend, Judy Peace, knew my angst and gently said to me, “Tara, what if you’re all those things? You are multi-faceted.” That did it. That seemed to be the key. Yes, absolutely, I am multi-faceted. I don’t need to explain myself to anyone. I know I’m not cold-hearted. I know I haven’t lost my marbles and flown off into woo-woo land. I am who I am. And it’s important to be seen and heard exactly as I am. I’m raw and authentically me and that’s the only possible person I can represent on Facebook. I can’t believe it was ever even a question! My new motto is, “Get to know me first.” Before anyone makes claims about me being any specific label, get to know me first. Ask me what I think and why. I probably don’t fit any of the labels you’re thinking, because I’m not a label, I’m me. I’m a person and people are multi-faceted. Let’s begin to look with new eyes and agree to see beyond the labels to the totality of who the person is standing before us. It’s a sacred act, and the deepest form of reverence and respect, to see someone for who they really are. In the movie Avatar, the Na’vi people use a greeting which translates to, “I see you.” Let’s start showing up and greeting each other that way. But remember, it takes getting to know the other person first. And also remember, as humans, we are constantly changing so don’t make the mistake of assuming the person you are having lunch with today is the same person you had lunch with last month. See and hear who he or she is today. Okay, enough of the soapbox. Friend me on Facebook! And there’s more. I’m also tweeting on Twitter, pinning on Pinterest…and I have a blog, www.TaraLRobinson.wordpress.com. I’m super excited about my blog. In Letter from the Editor (SeptOct ’11) I explained that I usually write many letters throughout our two-month publishing cycle but discard them at the end because, by the time we go to print, they are what I consider “old news,” so instead, I write a letter reflecting the very most recent topic on my heart at the final hour before we send the files to the printer. My blog will give me the opportunity to publish all those letters which have previously ended up in the recycle bin and a place to archive my thoughts throughout the cycle. Since we’re now friends, hee hee, I’m asking the community of Whole Living Journal readers to pray for me as I embark on the journey of publishing my book this year. The first step is to sign with an agent. I’m interviewing several and I ask for discernment in choosing the right one, and for mercy from the one I choose in taking a chance on me as a new author. We’re on a mission at WLJ. We’re encouraging all the consciousness-raisers in Cincinnati to step out in a big way this year. It’s time to be seen and be heard. Many business owners, workshop leaders and holistic practitioners rely on word-of-mouth to promote their products, services and events. Although word-of-mouth is effective, it only reaches a very small circle. It’s time to let the people of Cincinnati know on a larger and more visible scale about the amazing offerings here. Whether advertising with us, or blanketing the city with flyers, we want others to see that healthy living, in mind, body and spirit, is Alive and Well in Cincinnati.

Choose, Chill,Chew: 3 Simple Steps to Better Health

Health tips from Dr. Sachin Patel, Functional and Lifestyle Medicine Provider, author and speaker

D

o you know how critical your food intake and digestive system are to your overall health?

A few insights that will help put the important function of the digestive system into perspective: • The digestive tract has more nerve endings than the brain. • The digestive system covers the surface area of a tennis court. • The average American will consume 170,000 lbs. of food over the course of his/her life (the weight of a space shuttle). In light of such astonishing facts, it is easy to recognize what you eat and how you digest it plays a significant role in either causing or reversing disease. What you learn from this article will change the way you look at food and digestion forever. I will give you a three-part food strategy that will help you live a longer and healthier life. By implementing these three basic steps, you can eliminate digestive issues quickly and effectively. You will find that your body is extremely responsive to these changes. Follow these three guidelines and watch your health improve:

1. Choose: The Right Foods for You Hidden and delayed food allergies are often the most challenging to identify and can go undiagnosed for decades in some patients. The challenge is that the response for these allergies may be delayed up to four days after consumption of the particular food. Many common staples in the American diet are known allergens including wheat, soy, eggs, peanuts and dairy. It is a good idea to get tested, since the process is quite easy and will include a dietary strategy that is specifically designed to help you choose the right foods. For more information, visit www.becomeproof.com/food-allergies. Once you have determined your food allergies, the next step is to choose a low-glycemic diet. Today’s average American consumes over 150 lbs. of sugar per year, compared to only 10 pounds in 1910. With this drastic increase in carbohydrate intake, it is no wonder that almost 30 million Americans now have Type 2 Diabetes, a disease that is preventable. A low-glycemic diet consists of eating the right types of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, fiber and plenty of healthy vegetables, nuts and seeds. Choosing the right foods and following a low-glycemic diet helps to balance insulin, a hormone critical in weight loss and blood sugar management. For more information and a sample meal plan, go to www.becomeproof.com/med-diet.

2. Chill: Eat Under Low-Stress Conditions Stress has been associated with virtually every chronic illness from digestive complaints to headaches. Our bodies are programmed to shut down the digestive organs under periods of acute or chronic stress. When this happens, the production of saliva and stomach acid decrease, and your motility (bowel motion) also decreases. This can force a person to drink more fluids which dilutes enzymes and can lead to bloating and irregularity. Regardless of what you eat, physical and emotional conditions play a critical role in how well you will digest your food. When you eat, choose a calm and peaceful environment where you can relax, it will greatly improve your digestion.

3. Chew: Your Stomach Does Not Have Teeth! When your parents said “chew your food,” they were right… but they probably never told you why. Fortunately, chewing your food is one of the most important steps toward better digestion. The good news is, you have 100% control over it. In addition to what you choose to eat, how much you chew your food has a profound impact on digestion. Each organ of the digestive system has a unique function that is not replicated anywhere else in the body. It is therefore critical that you thoroughly chew your food. Your salivary glands are responsible for hydrating your food as you chew it. Chewing your food also signals to the brain that food is coming, so it prepares the rest of the digestive system for the incoming meal. You should chew your food as much as possible to ensure maximum digestion and nutrient absorption. This may seem challenging at first, but just try to get a little better with each meal. You now have an effective strategy that will help you eat the right foods and improve your digestion. By putting these ideas into practice, you can immediately impact your health in a positive way. Choose, chill, chew: your three simple steps to better health. About the author: Dr. Patel is a Functional and Lifestyle Medicine practitioner, author and speaker. Do you know? Your Partner’s Dosha by Logan Brookbank

The Pitta Dosha Partner - Fire and Water

yurveda has been used for thousands of years to help people understand one’s natural state of balance in the surrounding world. By knowing your partner’s predominant “dosha,” or “biological type” according to Ayurvedic medicine, you can recognize the emotions that signal they are falling out of balance. By learning how to comfort them back into balance, you restore harmony and peace in the relationship. Always remember not to take it personally, it is their dosha that is out of balance!

Pitas have a medium, athletic, frame with fierce eyes, often red or receding hair and glasses. They are natural leaders, focused and investigative, constantly learning, working, inquiring, and reading. Pittas tend to love out of knowledge and prestige. They are certain in their choices for their partners, jobs, and hobbies. Keep them busy and quench their thirst for debate, discussion, and observation. If you notice their patience is short or they become envious, jealous, or critical, walk away! Give them space and then offer them something cooling- a glass of cool water, cucumber salad, or maybe just an evening to do whatever they want to do. Pittas love fancy restaurants, concerts, symphonies, books, or a nice glass of scotch and a new documentary.

If you notice your partner becoming hyper active, unstable, ungrounded, and noisy with a loud laugh, these are signs they are falling out of balance. reathe in. Breathe out. Create. Creativity is a huge stress reducer. It stimulates the mind and relaxes the body. However, it can be difficult to find time in our busy Western lives to allow our minds to wander enough to find our creative center. But, avoiding giving ourselves time to explore the world around us through creative experiences can truly dampen our overall sense of wellness. When we don’t take time to care for our bodies, we fall ill, tired,

depressed and can feel overworked. Taking care of ourselves includes following our creative spirits and allowing time to develop ourselves on levels other than our everyday routines. Creating is an innate human need. We are all creative in one aspect or another. Poet and author, Maya Angelou, once said, “We need to remember that we are all created creative and can invent new scenarios as frequently as they are needed.” By allowing ourselves to get lost in any creative process, our breathing slows just as it would in meditation, our mind becomes free to explore without constant interruptions of what we think we should be doing, and we discover instead what we could be doing. Mayumi Oda, an accomplished artist and writer, said, “I think the creative process is not about creating something else; it’s about the process itself creating who I am.” As children, we didn’t think twice about letting our creative tendencies lead us, but as adults we often overlook the need for that part of ourselves be free. Even if you were not born with a paintbrush in hand, your health can benefit from even the smallest creative activity. Creativity can be as simple as rearranging framed photos on a shelf or finding a new way to solve an everyday problem in the office. If you find it difficult to get in touch with your imagination, remember to listen, breathe slowly and observe the wonder of the natural world around you. The ability to be in the present moment and truly see what is happening around us can be a path to finding our creative selves. By tuning in and engaging our imagination, we are being true to ourselves which creates balance which is needed for greater health. As the actress Lauren Bacall said, “Imagination is the highest kite we can fly.”

It’s Time to Focus on

What Really Matters

by Neale Donald Walsch

A

s I look at life it feels to me that 98% of the world’s peo-

ple are spending 98% of their time on things that don’t matter. That’s a bold statement to make, I know. It’s almost an indictment. But as I look back at my own activities in the past, I see that this was true during most of my life. And I see most people living pretty much as I had been living...so I’m going to stick with my observation. In fact, I used this exact statement to open my latest book, The Only Things That Matters.

It’s an attention getter, and I admit: I’m trying to get people’s attention. Why? Because I think the world is moving toward an important moment in time and everywhere I go I see people searching for answers to the larger questions in life. Questions such as, “What is this life really all about?” In my lectures I invite people to look at their own lives, and the day-to-day activities that fill them. Then I ask, “How many of those activities have really mattered in terms of the true reason for your existence?”

Most people say this depends on how one defines that true reason.

To which I answer, “Precisely.” And that is why I wrote this book; that is exactly what it explores. It also offers the observation that most people do not know what the true reason for their existence is—and this is, of course, the core of the problem. This is not our fault. We’ve been told very little about the real reason for our existence—and of the little we have been told by our ancestors, by our families, by our religions, by our cultures and our tribes, nearly all of it is inaccurate. We have been told that to be happy in life we need to get the job, get the house, get the spouse, get the kids, get the better job, get the better house, get the grandkids, get the retirement watch, and get the hell out. We have been told that we need to obey God’s commands, spread God’s word, and fear God’s wrath, for when we face God’s judgment we will be begging for His mercy—and, we may not get it, but rather, may find ourselves condemned to everlasting and unbearable torture in the fires of hell. We have been told about Survival of the Fittest and To the Victor Go the Spoils, Nice Guys Finish Last, The One with the Most Toys Wins, It’s Every Man for Himself, Money Doesn’t Grow on Trees, and We Made Our Bed and Now We Have to Lie in It. We have been told that There Is Only One Way to Heaven, It’s Us Against Them, We Can’t Fight City Hall, We Can’t Have Our Cake and Eat It Too, and that We Should Never Count Our Chickens Before They Hatch.

And now, as if that isn’t enough, we’re being told that The End Is Near, Society’s Collapse Is Imminent, and All Social Systems Are Falling Apart. Our minds have been filled with many other messages that have created a day-to-day reality so far removed from our real reason for being on the Earth that it’s a wonder we find any joy or excitement in life at all. Most of the things that are “wrong” in the 21st Century would right themselves by themselves if the majority of human beings simply refocused their attention on The Only Thing That Matters. And what, exactly, is that? It is the Agenda of the Soul. It is the Sacred Journey. It is the Divine Purpose. All of these are facets of the same diamond, and in the book I peer deeply into not only its breathtaking beauty, but its awesome power. The Agenda of the Soul automatically brings into our lives all the things that the Body and the Mind have been struggling to create: peace, health, safety, security, opportunity, creative expression, pleasure, abundance, joy, happiness, and love. We are on a journey here. And no, it is not the journey from birth to death. It is a journey from way before birth to long after death. Yet our here-and-now awareness of the purpose and destination of this journey can play an extraordinary effect on our day-to-day life— in some cases changing it forever, and in many ways maybe even changing the world by changing that part of the world we touch. Lest one think that this is just another metaphysical treatise, however, with little practical application, I should note that what I strived for here is exactly the opposite. I believe that spirituality that has no practicality is bankrupt. I have no time for it. The Only Thing That Matters invites 9-to-5, day-to-day, onthe-ground application of the spiritually revolutionary messages in Conversations with God. I have been waiting to produce this book for 15 years. Because of its daring, radical, and exciting approach to life, I wanted to try it first before I shared it, to see if it works. It does. (Note: Tara L. Robinson will interview Neale Donald Walsch on Tuesday, Jan. 15th, 3-5pm on WAIF 88.3FM or www.waif883.org.)

About the author: Neale Donald Walsch is the author of the 9-book Conversations with God series, seven of which have placed on The New York Times Bestsellers List. His most recent books include When Everything Changes, Change Everything, and The Only Thing That Matters, both distributed by Hay House. Body Age So, How Old Are You

Really?

by Libby Winterhalter, LMT

T

wenty years ago, while walking The Pier in St. Petersburg, Florida, I watched as other visitors participated in a survey-style test designed to determine his/her “real” age. For me, it was an eye-opening experience. At the ripe old age of 20-something, my real age proved to be almost 10 years older! Knowing I was considerably overweight and emotionally eager to complete my tour of duty with the Navy, I felt much older than my years. Chronologically speaking, nothing can be done to slow the hands of time. And yet, much can be done to change how you feel and how your body performs at any age. Body age is unique, personal and changeable. The manner in which we care for ourselves determines whether or not we will age gracefully or feel older than our years. Several factors play into the body’s real age: • level of fitness (including cardiovascular endurance) • bone density • muscle strength • flexibility • blood pressure and blood chemistry • percentage of body fat Non-measurable factors such as chronic stress, depression and countless medical concerns can also affect your body age. The best defense against aging is exercise. This statement alone conjures negative emotions in some people. To them, working out seems more like a chore than a beneficial activity and they are most pleased when the workout is over. Yet others love the feeling of physical exertion. The effort to push his/ her body to a new level of fitness is actually viewed as fun and stimulating.

Exercise physiologist, Sean Foy, M.A., is helping thousands of people not only improve their attitude, but also their results. In his book, The 10-Minute Total Body Breakthrough, Foy spells out a diverse fitness program that incorporates circuit training, interval training, resistance training and stretching. No matter what your age, income bracket, or fitness level, 10 minutes a day can offer dramatic results. Did you know? • Research shows that middle-aged individuals, who exercise regularly, are one-third as likely to develop Alzheimer’s in their seventies, and those who start exercising in their sixties, still reduce their risk by half. • Hot flashes, mood swings and sleep problems are reduced with regular exercise. • Sacropenia, the natural occurrence of muscle loss that comes with aging, stops with regular exercise. • Exercise combats osteoporosis, fatigue, diabetes and numerous other conditions. • Exercise affects cortisol levels, causing one to feel generally more relaxed and less anxious. nutrition and recipes from the kitchen of

The Healthy Foodies by Pama Mitchell and Mary Ann Barnes, MD

Adapting the Chinese Five Phases Model in Your Kitchen

I

n traditional Chinese medicine, balance and harmony are central to good health and apply to the foods that provides nourishment for the body’s organs. Too much, or not enough, of a specific type of food can cause a disturbance in this delicate balance. Chinese cooking balances five flavors (salty, sour, bitter, sweet and spicy) which nourish each of five organ systems. The Five Phases Model of Chinese Medicine demonstrates how the organs/ flavors support each other, with energy flowing clockwise around the circle. The organs/flavors also exert control on each other to ensure that a disturbance in the system will not create imbalance.

Heart (Bitter) Liver (Sour)

Kidney (Salty)

Spleen (Sweet)

Lung (Spicy)

Each flavor and organ is controlled by the organ/flavor that lays two spots counterclockwise on the circle. This circle has

an application to cooking, wherein fullflavored dishes have a balance of all the flavors. Too much of any flavor can be balanced by adding some of the controlling flavor. For example, too much salt in a dish can be tempered by adding sweet. Following some of the tenets of the Chinese system, we have included a recipe that nourishes the body and promotes weight loss by supporting the spleen. It has a balance of flavors, with salty added in the broth. Consider the Five Phases Model to add interest, depth and balance to your family’s meals.

Recipe: Slow-cooked Chinese Aromatic Rice (Serves 4) (Good for obesity, spleen qi/yang deficiency and phlegm damp blockage, according to the Wheel) Ingredients: 1 c brown rice 16 oz vegetarian broth 2 T margarine 3 T lemon juice ½ t anise 1 t cinnamon 4 T olive oil 1 t dried chili flakes 2 t fennel seeds 2 t coriander ½ t cardamom

Instructions: Combine ingredients in a slow cooker and heat on low for 4 hours, or until liquids are absorbed. Serve warm.

Citrus, Pros and Cons (Mostly Pro) Winter is the peak season for citrus fruits. Citrus fruits are nutritional powerhouses, known mostly for their high Vitamin C content, but also rich in fiber, potassium, folate, calcium, other B vitamins and a variety of phytochemicals. However, there are well-documented, potentially dangerous, interactions between grapefruit (including the juice) and a number of medications including some antidepressants, antihistamines, calcium channel blockers and statins. Some of the chemicals contained in grapefruit, and some other citrus fruits, can interfere with how the body metabolizes these medicines. What ultimately happens, according to the Mayo Clinic website, is that the medication stays in the body’s system too long and may become an overdose. If you’re a fan of grapefruit, especially during its high season (as we are), check with your doctor or pharmacist to see if any drug you take may be affected by this or other citrus fruits.

Recipe: Citrus and Avocado Salad (Serves 4) Ingredients:

For the vinaigrette:

1 head Boston lettuce, rinsed well, torn into bitesize pieces 1 grapefruit, peeled /sectioned 2 seedless oranges, peeled and sectioned 1 small can Mandarin oranges, drained 1 ripe avocado, cut into bite-size chunks

1 cup orange and grapefruit juice, squeezed from remaining fruit 1/3 cup olive oil 2 T fresh lemon juice 2 T fresh thyme leaves 2 T honey, or more to taste Dash of salt Freshly ground black pepper

Instructions: When peeling and sectioning the grapefruit and oranges, work over a deep bowl to catch the juices. Squeeze the leftover insides well to get out all possible juice. Add additional orange juice, if necessary, to make a cup of juice. Make the vinaigrette: add the thyme, lemon juice, honey and seasonings to the juice. Whisk in the olive oil and transfer the dressing to a jar or measuring cup with a spout. Put the grapefruit, orange and Mandarin orange in a bowl, pour half of the dressing over the fruit and allow to sit for 1530 minutes either in the fridge or at room temperature. Toss the lettuce with a small amount of the dressing and arrange on a serving platter. Spoon the fruit evenly over the lettuce, and then add the avocado pieces. Spoon more of the dressing over the salad or pass it at the table.

Answers for

Sensitive People

by Anne Steffen-Russo and Eric Russo

A

t one time or another, many of us have asked ourselves such questions as, “Why am I so sensitive?” “Why don’t I fit in?” or “Why do I feel like I need to fix everyone?” Modern society generally impresses upon us that sensitivity is a weakness, further reinforcing a mindset that something is wrong with us. In turn, this leads to a belief that we need to curtail, control, or curb our sensitive nature or feeling side of life. In truth, sensitive people have a gift that, when shared from a position of strength and empowerment, has the ability to heal, uplift and transform - not only ourselves but others. The question is how can we achieve a sense of empowerment or strength from our sensitivity when more often than not we are conditioned to deny or dismiss it? A first step is simply recognizing and acknowledging one’s own sensitivity, and observing where and how it is manifesting. For instance, are you someone who feels other’s pain and discomfort almost as if it were your own? Are you an individual who is at the mercy of your physical environment, suffering from chemical reactions, food allergies, or getting sick easily? Or, are you someone who can see, feel, hear, or sense things before they happen? As a young girl growing up, I felt like crying every day and could not understand why. I remember feeling the emotions of parents, grandparents, siblings and others. Although I could feel love from others, I also picked up on their dysfunctions, depression, stress and anxiety. At the time, it was confusing for me because I thought there was something wrong with me. I

did not realize that my sensitive nature was like radar, picking up, reading and absorbing everything around me, including the negative energies of others. Over the last 30 years I have engaged in a lot of transformational work and healing therapies, and I have learned from master teachers and healers all over the world. I have learned to ground (or plant) my physical body such that my sensitivity is further tuned into the higher knowledge, wisdom and truth of Source, without interfering with, or being interfered with from, others. This has deepened my connection with, and unconditional love for others. In my practice I see hundreds of clients annually, many of whom are highly sensitive. They are seeking guidance and support in their quest to become whole, integrated and healthy human beings. Several years ago one of my younger clients contacted me because she was struggling with intense pain and confusion that others around her were feeling. Sadness and despair had overcome her since she did not know how to handle all the conflicting and disarming energy. She asked me if I knew of any books that could help her better understand these feelings. I did not know of any books I would recommend, so I told her I would write one. Answers for Sensitive People, is a book near and dear to me that is based on many years of personal and professional experience in the field of holistic care and intuitive energy work. It is a hands-on, concise, and easy-to-follow guide that holds appeal for a wide audience of readers. The book contains real-life stories which demonstrate that we are not alone in our sensitivity. It also includes practical and effective exercises to help comprehend, integrate and master high levels of sensitivity. It is my hope, as well as the hope of my husband, Eric Russo, and my friend, Kay Wise, both of whom collaborated on this book, that one can discover that sensitivity is, in fact, a strength rather than a perceived weakness. Heart Easy™ Tips for Starting the New Year Off Healthy by Kac Young PhD, DCH, ND Do you have New Year’s resolutions? Is one of them to eat healthier? Exercise? Lose weight? Stop smoking? Good choices! Here are 9 tips that will help you stay on track. 1. Write your resolutions down. And put them in a place where you will see them every day. 2. Take baby steps. Don’t try to revolutionize your world overnight. Practice patience and grace with yourself each day. 3. Set a goal and keep it. If you want to eat less sugar or salt per week, set your goal so you can achieve it. Take one or two sweet or salty foods away from your diet and stick with it. 4. Turn your diet around. As you remove unhealthy food from your diet, add new things that are healthier. Add a new vegetable to your meal plan, or try a new form of grain like quinoa. 5. Get into the habit of substitutions. Switch from white flour pasta and bread to whole or multi-grain. 6. Eat foods in their natural state. Eat fruits and vegetables raw for snacks instead of crackers, cookies or candy. 7. Cook from scratch. The flavors are better and for under $30 you can get a slow cooker and prepare meals in minutes that will be ready when you get home. 8. Don’t fret the slip ups. If you are eating healthy 80% of the time, you’re good. If you have to grab some fast food, eat it and forget it. 9. Reward your good efforts. Not with chocolate, with a massage or a trip to a musuem. Change can be tricky, don’t be afraid to praise yourself. If you don’t, who will? A Clean Start for the

id you over-indulge during the holidays? Have you put on a few pounds? Would you like to have a “clean” start for the new year? Adding detoxification herbs and foods to your diet is a great place to start a healthy, natural cleanse. The following herbs strengthen and support the liver, kidneys, and other important aspects of the body’s natural detox system. Start adding them slowly, or jump right in and do a full fledge detox. Either way, you will feel better and have more energy.

Manjistha: an Ayurvedic herb recommended for cleaning the

lymphatic system. It is one of the best herbs for blood purification and for detoxing the liver.

Turmeric: a well-known herb that is very beneficial for the

liver. Turmeric increases the flow of bile, helping to remove toxins from the body. It helps relieve the mucus buildup that comes from eating heavy foods, regulates the metabolism, and is a natural antibiotic that improves intestinal flora and purifies the blood. Add as a spice to your food, and/or take as a concentrated supplement.

Dandelion: this well-known detox herb helps cleanse the liver by stimulating the production of bile and its flow to the gallbladder. Dandelion leaves are also a diuretic. The roots can be steeped to make dandelion tea, or the leaves added to salads.

dize heavy metals, making them more water-soluble and easier to remove from the body. Garlic has numerous other benefits that can help strengthen the detox system, like strengthening the immune system and controlling free radicals. If eating garlic raw, be sure to cut, crush or bruise the clove to activate its healing properties.

Cilantro: binds to heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium, lead and aluminum, making it easier to transport them out of the body. Try steaming a packed ¼ cup of cilantro once daily for three weeks. Milk thistle: prevents liver damage and stimulates the ability to generate new cells. Silymarin is the active ingredient in milk thistle. Because it is poorly soluble in water and not absorbed well by the body, a concentrated supplement is recommended.

Beets: help to thin the bile so that toxins do not get backed up in the liver forcing them into the body where they will be stored in fat cells. Eating beets will improve lymph, liver, and gall bladder functioning, and also act as a laxative.

Fenugreek: a rejuvenating herb that improves digestion and improves liver function. Ancient

Traditions Today

Intuitive Insights, by Francine Haydon and Patricia Garry

T

he ancient Celtic wheel of the year has eight major holidays called sabbats. In contrast to the traditional Gregorian calendar, which begins on the first of January, the Celtic New Year occurs at the end of October and is called Samhain (also known as Halloween or All Hallows Eve). In the northern hemisphere, from January 31 to February 1 or 2, the Celts of Gaelic Ireland and the Scottish Highlands would celebrate the first of four cross-quarter days called Imbolc or Imbolg. Imbolc was a fire festival of the hearth and home which celebrated the lengthening of sunlight each day and the coming of spring. Town folk lit hearthfires and bonfires as rites of purification and to signal the return of the sun and warmth. They also ate foods made with butter and milk. In old Irish imbolg means “in the belly” and oimelc means “ewe’s milk” which is how Imbolc is associated with the pregnancy of the ewes and the onset of lactation. Proof This Date: was also a 02/12/11 time of weather divination. Size Size: 1/16was pg (3.5x1)" Originally, Imbolc a pagan festival honoring Brighid, the Gaelic goddess of poetry, healing and smithcraft. Later this date became Christianized as the festival of Saint Brighid, also known for her healing work and feeding the poor. The day after was often called Candlemas for Mary of the Page Candles or the feast of the Purification of the Virgin. In the kivas in the pueblos of the Southwest, this was celebrated as the day ‘the seed turns in the earth’ as there was finally enough light and warmth for growth to begin again. So how can we honor these days and this time of year today? There are a lot of possibilities. We can literally brighten ourselves up by putting on clothes with primary colors and maybe even sparkles. Make a salad, declaring a new season

even though the scene before us might still look like winter. We can brighten someone else’s day with a bouquet of flowers or a phone call. Whenever the sun is out on one of these three days, find a ray and sit down in it, spending 10 minutes just listening and allowing your mind to relax. We all tend to hibernate in the winter. Even though we don’t call it that and try to pretend we’re as busy and rushed as in other seasons, we stay home more often and “couch potato” more than other times of the year. But, now, at Imbolc, new ideas and new energy begins to infuse us. Use this energy to build the life you want to have. Just a few minutes a day visualizing the desired outcome will give your intuition a boost in terms of pointing out the next step, and then the one after that. By the time of the Vernal Equinox, you’ll be many steps farther down your path. We can still honor the changing of the seasons and use the wisdom of our ancestors even though these ancient holidays aren’t widely acknowledged today. Everyone has a story worth sharing...

My Journey From Hell and Back...Finally, Finding Peace on the Mat by Danielle Toft Dedicated to Kathryn Haumesser My journey to hell began in 2006. My very best friend was hit and killed by a drunk driver while coming home with her daughter from the hospital. Needless to say I was stunned, in shock, and just couldn’t take the grief I felt day after day. Years went by, I kept busy, but I still felt overwhelming sadness. It seemed as if the world was no longer a safe place. In 2009 I gave birth to my third child, my first son. I felt amazing during my pregnancy and sensed my son had a special connection with my deceased best friend. It felt like she had sent him to me. However, his birth was traumatic, I had high blood pressure and the doctor was really worried. During the hospital stay, my heart started racing at 166 beats per minute and continued for eight hours. It was weird, it seemed like this was nature’s way of playing a sick joke on me. I believed I was going to die, and leave my children behind just like my friend had left her daughter behind. After returning home, I was scared and filled with fear and anxiety. I had a reoccurring thought that if I fell asleep I wouldn’t wake up, so I only allowed myself to sleep a few hours at a time. Here I was, a mother of two children, and now a mother of a newborn who had colic and acid reflux…and I was sleepstarving myself. My mom came to my house and said, “Get some sleep, you need it,” but she also noticed I wasn’t able to sleep when I did get the chance. I was edgy and crying all the time. She talked to me

about the possibility of Postpartum Depression (PPD). I laughed it off but said I was really scared and that something was not right with me. She encouraged me to call my OB/GYN and he said it was hormonal. I bounced around from doctor to doctor seeking a diagnosis for why I felt so horrible. My amazing husband, mother and family stayed by my side, making meals and taking care of my kids while I focused on getting stronger and healthier. A year later I returned to work. I had taken a job with my previous employer starting and running a transitional living program for battered women and children. A volunteer, who also happened to be a yoga teacher and studio owner, offered an amazing opportunity for one of the women in the program to become a yoga teacher. I presented the idea to the women but none were able to commit to the eight month program. My inner voice said, ‘Do it.” I talked to my husband about the scholarship and he said to find out if I could take the training she was offering. After careful consideration, I called the studio owner and asked if I could be trained and, in turn, use my training to help the ladies and children at the shelter. She replied, “Fill out the application and we can see what happens.” A few weeks later I was approved! I was nervous and excited at the same time. I had only taken a few yoga classes before. I started training and it blew my mind. I slowly felt a shedding of the layers I had built around myself. The training was very physical, but the mental and emotional components pushed me beyond what words can express. We trained one weekend a month and every time, as the weekend approached, I felt a sense of joy, dread and anxiousness. I knew I would be opened up and it had been scary what I had seen, there were feelings of sadness overwhelm, fear, grief, joy, helplessness, hope, shame and forgiveness. Many weekends, after the training was over, I would cry. Not just a

January-February 2013

regular cry, but a deep healing cry. After one of the sessions on a rainy night, I got in my car and I felt the presence of my best friend sitting in the seat next to me. I unloaded all my fear, pain, grief and regret, but most of all, I told her how much I loved her and how much she meant to me. I decided I was no longer going to punish myself for not telling her all the things I wish I would have told her. By the time the training ended, I finally had light in my eyes again and an open heart. I had stopped believing all the lies and stories that had kept me wrapped in a tight cocoon of self pity. I am so grateful for a lady named Heidi, who happens to be a yoga teacher, for taking a chance on me and showing me how to get the light back and find peace on my yoga mat. Every month since I received my certificate, I find groups that need healing, juvenile detention centers, shelters, orphanages and everyday people. It has been an amazing journey and I am not done yet. Never give up hope for yourself and others. We all need each other to heal and I am grateful for all the wonderful people who inspired and encouraged me, especially my husband Ryan, my family, my therapist Steven Katkin, and Heidi Fricke, owner Simply Power Yoga.

January 30: Jupiter Direct. You may encounter fussiness and quirkiness in others but the potential of this day lies in the ability to tap into deeper sources within. Fulfillment and success are possible when you embrace people who act and talk like mavericks. February 1: Venus in Aquarius and Mars in Pisces. Someone stands in the way of your attempts to reach out to help another. Draw the line on this behavior. You feel a need to contribute and you have it in you to make this work--push beyond the limits imposed by others and enjoy. There is great power in showing your sensitive and caring self. February 3: Fourth Quarter Moon. Healing a relationship with someone of authority in your life is a priority. You’ve had

enough with the struggle and the planets now support getting beyond it. Efforts are likely to reward you with success. February 5: Mercury in Pisces. Harness ego power with plans to create a better tomorrow. Breakthroughs are possible with carefully worked out strategies. Avoid the pitfall of needing to be right about something. Keep your options wide open and success is assured. February 10: New Moon. Irritability and frustration; these feelings are a sure sign you are close to breaking through to the other side. The problem might be that you are dealing with too many attractive options. Run your thoughts by a trusted friend to get clear on your judgment. The solution is likely to come from an unexpected source. February 17: Fourth Quarter Moon. Not fitting in? Dazed and confused? Noticing the animals heading for higher ground? Do not fear. What’s coming could be a startling new vision that defines your life’s purpose. February 18: Sun in Pisces and Saturn Retrograde. Saturn will station direct July 8. The need to revamp plans could send you and your team into orbit. Nothing is clear. Everyone’s confused. Your exit plan involves thinking outside of the box. Go to lunch by a body of water, relax and then the solution might arrive automatically. February 23: Mercury Retrograde. Mercury turns direct March 17. When the computer, printer and phone all die, celebrate! Spend the day in meditation of sorts. By unplugging and letting your thoughts drift you could invent the next great thing. That’s how Einstein did it, he dreamt relativity. Turn rust into gold today. February 25: Full Moon and Venus in Pisces. Dreams, visions and spiritual insights are the key to success. Be sure to share these experiences with your favorite support group.

Book Review Madly in Love with Me by Christine Arylo (New World Library, 2012) Imagine how it would feel to live in a world where every woman loved herself fully without feeling guilty. Christine Arylo dares women to take a stand to think and act as their own best friends. In her new book, Madly in Love with Me, she shows them how to put their own happiness and health first, trust their inner guidance, and always be on their own side. Arylo provides inspiring tools and practices that show women how to reprogram self-sabotaging habits, patterns, and thoughts into self-loving and self-empowering ones. She offers a tangible, practical and fun self-love roadmap. Throughout the book, readers measure their “love pulse” on the 10 branches of self-love to determine where they lack self-love, and then they can take the daring adventures the book prescribes. Every February, in honor of Self-Love Day (February 13th), women and girls choose one branch of self-love, and make a promise to grow that area all year long. (Note: Tara L. Robinson will interview Christine Arylo on Tuesday, Feb. 12th, 3-5pm on WAIF 88.3FM or www.waif883.org.)

The Law of Divine Compensation by Marianne Williamson (HarperOne, 2012) We’ve all heard stories of highly successful individuals who have risen from dire circumstances to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles to make impossible feats a reality. Marianne Williamson says true stories such as these are not examples of chance or luck, rather they illustrate a powerful spiritual principle. Williamson’s new book is a guide to that spiritual principle (based on A Course in Miracles) that paves the way to material abundance. The Law of Divine Compensation is not about hoping, dreaming, or wishing we’d win the lottery; rather it is about faith as a mental and emotional muscle we must exercise in order to benefit from. Every one of us has the power to believe that something else is possible, that our destinies can change, that a miracle can happen. And then it does. This simple shift in how we think can have a monumental effect on what happens next. Our thoughts have the power to attract-or deflect-miraculous breakthroughs in our lives. If you read this book you will have miracles. (Note: Tara L. Robinson will interview Marianne on Tuesday, March 5th, 3-5pm on WAIF 88.3FM, www.waif883.org.)

BREATHE MORE LIFE INTO YOUR BODY noring and sleep apnea lead to low oxygen levels in the body. In turn, this leads to physical problems people don’t usually associate with sleep issues. They affect your life at home, on the job, and your relationships. Dr. Bosma helps patients who snore through a unique system of evaluation and treatment called Oral Systemic Balance. Breathe more life into your body! Call us for information or to schedule your sleep evaluation.
