The Spiral Effect

A

s we enter the New Year 2012, there is an energy of anticipation in the air. Some historians claim to have unlocked the mysteries of the ancient Mayan calendar and interpret this 5,125-year-old code to mean the world is going to end on December 21, 2012. The Mayan calendar is cyclical and is largely based on the familiar premise of history repeating itself. The ancient Mayans were not psychics as is commonly misunderstood, rather they were masters at understanding astronomy and psychology. They studied the heavens, and human behavior, and observed that over time certain patterns were repeated. These sophisticated patterns revealed similarities which stretched into the past as well as into the future. They could predict with amazing accuracy what the major themes in the world would be 1000 years into the future based on what happened in the past. The calendar extends in both directions in linear time. With each turn of the wheel, anyone who can decipher the meanings of the symbols can “read” what themes the calendar predicts will be played out next. The “Galactic Day” cycle (25,625 years) and the “Long Count” or “Great Cycle” (5,125 years) are the most relevant to what many people are anticipating to occur in the coming year. Both are set to end and restart on Winter Solstice 2012. However, a belief gaining popularity, as Chicken Soup for the Soul author Jack Canfield recounts in the article “Why 2012 Will Be a Very Good Year,” is that the Mayan predictions are actually positive, not negative, and simply signify the end of the world as we know it. That, in fact, the world will become a better place as we evolve into a greater state of consciousness as a species. While the significance of the Mayan calendar might not be completely clear, what is clear is the fact that life operates in a cyclical manner. Numerous examples of this can be found in nature as well as in human psychological growth and development. Many metaphysicians are familiar with the concept of the spiral as it relates to personal and spiritual growth. The idea is that although we seem to face similar challenges again and again in our lives, the lessons being provided for us to learn are not recurring in a flat circular motion, but rather in the shape of a spiral. Each time we encounter a problem that seems to be the same as one we’ve encountered before, we are actually at a different place on the spiral because we have gained some new level of awareness, however small, since the last time we faced a parallel issue. Therefore, although the theme might be strikingly similar, we have shifted, even if only one degree, which means our approach to the challenge will be slightly different and more evolved than before. So, metaphysically speaking, we have taken a step forward even though we may have circled around to a similar point on the spiral and the landscape feels familiar. It is only with consciousness that we can truly begin to leap around the spiral and begin to tackle our lessons head-on, armed with the growth and awareness we’ve gained since the last time we encountered a comparable problem. As our thinking and state of being evolves, we eventually outgrow our problems. What once used to seem like an impossible mountain to climb, is now as easily traversed as a molehill.

I was introduced to a related lesson recently that has become my new favorite. I call it “The One Five Solution.” International speaker and author Mary Morrissey spoke about this concept during the workshop in November. I’ve had great fun expanding the horizon of my consciousness in order to play with activating this principle in my life. Mary said that life is like a math class. The problems we face are intended to bring us into a higher order of thinking as we master them. The difference is that when we step through the door of a math class, we expect to encounter problems because we understand that is the purpose of them. However, in life, we don’t often view our problems this way. Instead, we struggle against them and complain about them, completely forgetting what the purpose is. Then she told a story. She said that during a visit with her young granddaughter the child was very excited to report that she had learned how to add at school. She was proud to show her “Emma” the equation 5+5+5+5+5 and said, “I know what that makes Emma.” Mary said, “What dear?” The granddaughter confidently said, “Twenty-five,” to which Mary replied, “That is very good, but did you know you can make twenty-five with only two fives?” With indignant hands on hips and eyes narrowed the granddaughter insisted, “No you can’t Emma. You can’t make twenty-five with only two fives. You need five fives. Two fives only makes ten.” At this point, Mary paused and looked out at the audience and said, “My granddaughter didn’t understand the higher order of mathematical thinking it takes to get to twenty-five with only two fives. When, in fact, you can actually get to twenty-five with only one five, can you not? By using an exponent?” That’s when it totally clicked for me. I realized there must be problems I struggle with and the only way I can see to get to the solution is by going through a five-step process, when there is a shortcut that exists which requires much less effort to achieve the same result. Mary’s granddaughter thought that what Mary proposed was impossible. She was even a little angry that Mary would question her intelligence and try to mess with her sense of reality. How true is that very sentiment for me? How often do I constrain the possibilities of my life due to limited thinking? What problems seem impossible to me when really I just haven’t been taught how the math works on that level?

And so the journey began. That day my mind opened a crack to the light of understanding that there is a force that can be used to get where I want to go. And just because I don’t understand it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. And if it exists, then surely I can learn to understand it, and to harness the power of it so that I can skip five steps and get there even faster. So I think I might have reached a new place on the spiral. My familiar problems look different from here. The world looks different from here. Maybe this is what is meant by “the end of the world as we know it.” Well, if it is, I say bring it on. 2012 here I come!

Cincinnati's Best Kept (Spiritual) Secret Rev. Kathy Engelhardt took the helm as spiritual leader of Garden Park Unity Church in 2009 following Rev. Julie’s retirement. Since that time, GPU has grown leaps and bounds. Kathy’s enthusiasm for life and her warm, open-hearted approach to every person who walks through her doors leaves even the biggest skeptic wanting more of what she has to offer. With an inspirational style that rivals that of author and international lecturer Marianne Williamson, it’s no wonder the walls of GPU are bursting at the seams. Kathy draws on the insight of her own life experiences to help others in their spiritual quests. She has been motivating people for over 20 years on how to become better versions of themselves. As is true of any solid organization, Garden Park’s strength is more than that of its leader. The members bring an energy to all activities and programs that’s congruent with that of Rev. Kathy’s. For example, a Sunday service wouldn’t be complete without the talented and fun-loving presence of Music Director Karl Payne. The children’s program is growing rapidly and the congregation recently adopted new Vision and Mission statements to reflect the heart and soul of what GPU is all about. New attendees of a GPU service can expect to feel immediately welcomed, regardless of spiritual or religious background, as all spiritual paths are honored within Unity’s teachings. And, of course, because of the big hug they are sure to receive from Rev. Kathy. For more information, 513.385.8889 or visit www.gardenparkunity.org. Vision Statement: We live and celebrate loving, peaceful, joyful and abundant lives, honoring all paths to God. Mission Statement: We are a spiritual community that models, teaches, supports and empowers personal spiritual growth.

Success

The Best Idea by Judy Durham

S

uccess is a pie everyone wants a piece of in some form or another. And yet success means different things to different people because the mental images it conjures are quite individual. Some people envision themselves n/ Feb Issue surrounded by a cheering crowd, while for others just being able to move one finger is a great milestone. In its simplest definition, success is having favorable outcomes to our endeavors. And whether or not we receive those kudos and pats on back, contact: experiencing success is fundamental to our healthy s with adtheplease functioning and feeling happy and fulfilled. /Diana Puppin/513.389.1335 The concept of success can be broken down into countless parts, or elements. My favorites are mind, heart, will, and outer action because they form a continuum that's easy to remember. It goes like this: every single thing that we do begins with an idea, or vision, that forms in the mind. This idea appeals to us, and from deep in the heart we know we want to create from it. So next we put our will behind it--we determine to make this vision a reality in the outer world. To do this requires outer action--we must physically do certain things to cause our idea to take physical form. And when it does, we have successfully achieved our desired outcome. Another way to work with the elements of success is to play games of association with the concepts. For example, a creative and playful friend of mine made up an ingenious game by making a list of success words that begin with the same letter as his name. Alliteration is an excellent memory tool, and here's how his game worked: I get a Picture in my mind, and my heart becomes Passionate to Pursue it. This becomes my Purpose, and to be purposeful is to have will. But I see that reaching my goal is going to be a Process that will require Patience, so I must create a solid Plan. I must do Productive things and be Persistent about them. I must Persevere until all is done to my satisfaction, and then I reach the very Pinnacle of success! Regardless of one's chosen approach or methodology, arriv-

Why 2012

will be

a Very Good Year by Jack Canfield

T

he media is currently reporting about the end of the Mayan Calendar and Nostradamus prophecies about the end of the world slated to occur on December 21, 2012. There is a lot of doom and gloom associated with this date and much of it is based on conjecture unrelated to any hard facts of any kind. I recently learned that the actual Mayan prophecies connected to the end of their calendar are positive predictions and not negative at all. I believe what we are experiencing is an essential evolutionary process and that my own life purpose may be related to bringing to others the positive potential of 2012 so that all of us can create a better world. I have written a new book, The Golden Motorcycle Gang, of which the premise is taken from actual events in my life. A very important moment in my life was a vision I had when still in graduate school of seeing myself along with others as members of a special gang of golden motorcycle riders speeding through space encountering a planet in distress. That planet, of course, was Earth. (The following is an excerpt from GMG and is reprinted with permission of Hay House and authors Jack Canfield and William Gladstone. © 2011)

Oh, what glorious beings they were! Flying through the universe on their magnificent golden motorcycles, the cosmic wind in their hair, going wherever they chose, traveling at light speed, sometimes even faster. Their bodies were ephemeral yet defined, and they enjoyed the ageless youth gifted to their species. Only a few thousand years old, they were considered adolescents, not yet the elders of their planet or their universe— elders who each had tens of thousands of years of experience in dealing with complex worlds and the moral difficulties that arose from engaging those worlds. The beings traveled through this beautiful, endless day, which was much like the many they’d enjoyed together on their annual solstice breaks. As the Class of 2012 at the Academy of Enlightenment, they were fast approaching the time when they would graduate and be given assignments to ensure the balance and stability of the universe for eons to come. Today, however, was a day to enjoy the carefree exhilaration of their youth and freedom. Dozens of them rode together, sharing their boundless joy through their thoughts, for they communicated only with thoughts. Their thoughts shaped words, which they immediately understood; yet communication was instantaneous, faster than words could ever be, and infinitely more clear. It was a perfect day and they were in high spirits. Suddenly Jack noticed a small bluish planet off to his right. It was about 50,000 miles below but clearly visible to him. “Hey, look over there. That planet seems to be in trouble. I can sense the energy coming from the surface—and it’s full of turmoil, sadness, anger, even rage.

www.WholeLivingJournal.com

I’ve seen this planet before; I have sensed its people and their growth and their struggles. Although there have always been some discordant sparks from this world, I’ve never felt such sorrow as I’m feeling today.” Such was Jack’s instantaneous thought to his riding friends, or as they liked to call themselves, the Golden Motorcycle Gang. On that magical motorcycle ride through the universe, Jack and his friends had easily picked up on the negative energy coming from planet Earth. The suffering radiating from the dazzling blue ball was unmistakable. The year on Earth was 1943, and great conflict was raging on much of the planet. The battles engulfed a great deal of its middle band, from one great ocean to the next. The planet was divided into groups called “nations,” which were sometimes the result of geography but oftentimes the result of human choice. Many of the largest and most militarily well-armed nations were focused on the fighting. Almost all the human beings on the planet at that time were thinking about this great conflict, whether their nation would exist if and when the battles ever ended, and if their loved ones would survive and return from the battlefields around the world. Jack looked around and realized that for perhaps the only time in his existence, he had no explanation for the energy being emitted by this planet. What was this “war,” as the humans called it? What in a human’s life could happen that would convince him or her that it was right and good to end the lives of millions of other identically created life-forms? “Yes, what a tragedy,” his close friend Michael thought back. “Such a beautiful blue planet, so full of life, creativity, and joy despite the clear tumors that seem to be

infesting it now.” “Tumors? I never thought of these ills as tumors, but that planet needs some help,” Jack thought back to Michael. “I think we should do something. All our decades of training at the Academy of Enlightenment have prepared us for our roles as masters of harmony. I think we should stop by this planet and see what we can do to help.” Mark, another member of the Gang, looked at Jack in disbelief. “Jack, this is the first day of our solstice break. We have a great voyage ahead of us. We can go anywhere and everywhere, no responsibilities, no fixed agenda, just experiencing all that the universe has to offer and the solidarity of great friends. Do you know how long it might take to get that little blue globe back on track? It could take us several human lifetimes or more, and that would certainly put a damper on our fun.” “That may be so, but look at them,” Jack replied. “They’re slowly destroying themselves. They’re in real trouble. Think how great it would be to get that planet back into balance. I have tuned in to it, and it is a really special place—with many different species and lots of variety with re-

spect to geography, climate, and creative ideas. It could be a really fun place. And, what’s most ironic is that it’s their wonderful diversity that is dividing them into opposing factions and threatening their continued existence. What makes them so special is also what’s causing them to face extinction. “The people there call their planet ‘Earth.’ There has only been intelligent life on Earth for ten or twenty thousand years. That planet is not much older than we are. We should take a little time to see if we can prevent the catastrophic events that we can sense are ahead for them. I think it would be an adventure . . . and when we get back to the Academy, if we can get this Earth back to health, we would probably get all kinds of extra credit for it.” Jack added this overly optimistic goal, knowing it would probably appeal to his fellow riders. “Well, since you put it that way, I can’t let you go alone,” Mark shot back. “So if you’re bound and determined to go down there, I guess we’re all going to have to join you.” “Absolutely,” beamed Michael and Janet; along with Steve, Bob, Martin, and

January-February 2012

Marcia. The rest of the Golden Motorcycle Gang silently voiced their approval. Mission accepted! In what seemed to them no more than the blink of an eye, each had taken form as new beings—“human beings,” born on planet Earth. The Gang had failed to mention one critical element of their mission of intervention and redemption: once they were born into human bodies, they would forget that they were cosmic beings with unlimited lifetimes. In order to grow and develop as human beings on Earth, many years would pass before they would remember who they truly were and why they had chosen to be born into a body. And so our story of the Golden Motorcycle Gang and their adventures on planet Earth begins. There, but for the grace of God, go I

by Himavat Ishaya “If you’re not helping humanity, you’re not eligible for enlightement.” ~ Sri Kaleshwar

onsider this: ingenuity, innovation, discipline, persistence: these all equal success, when applied to the material world. The lack of these can equal loss. So, what about the dependent, weak, defenseless, vulnerable, exposed, unprotected, paralyzed and disabled among us? Are they truly incapable and powerless? Are some us simply innately more worthy than others, based on our choices and our circumstances? This is not an easy question, and it may even make us uncomfortable. Yet, to the extent that we are willing to be uncomfortable, that is the extent that we will find doors to real success opening up to us. What do I mean by “real” success? Not just material gain, although that will come. Along with that material gain, we will gain personal power. The power that will carry us through the struggles that call for patience, faith and choosing to act in a loving way when we don’t feel either grateful or kind or loving to the people in our world, in our face, or around the corner. Living Master Sri Kaleshwar said, “Help ever, hurt never.” M. Scott Peck wrote in The Road Less Traveled, “Love is a choice, not a feeling: ask any mother.” But, what about love? What about enlightenment? Do they matter? Clearly that is a matter of degree for each of us. And a matter of discernment. Each of us finds our way through the maze of challenging questions in our own time, in our own way. When we do have the good fortune to face some of the harder questions, we are literally at a doorway to further good fortune. Truly our choices do determine our successes. The challenge and the opportunity for growth, for healing at deeply profound levels, is clarified when

we embrace the broader perspective. The broader perspective is this: we are all connected, no matter our external circumstances. The broader perspective takes us back to our personal power. Our fears would have us believe that we are separate, and “safe” from the threats that life and change inflict on the souls in our world who appear to be “down on their luck.” They are over there, I am over here, and “safe.” When we begin to remember that we are all connected, then something profound and powerful begins to rumble deep inside us, and we begin to be moved to another level of being in our world. We begin to let go of our fears, become willing to be uncomfortable, vulnerable, and ready to make a different choice, that is: choose for true compassion. And that is powerful. And empowering. We nourish our capacity to connect: to the deeper levels of our own being, in our heart and soul, and to our world. We Did It!

and

A

fter eight years of writing the Intuitive Insights column for Whole Living Journal, we are thrilled to celebrate the recent publication of our first book which features a collection of our favorite Insights articles. We decided to title it Right Brain / Left Brain - Use Everything You've Got to Create a Great Life and wanted to share with you, our readers, the inside scoop of how it came to be. It all began in March of last year during an interview on Waves of the New Age radio show with co-host and WLJ editor, Tara L. Robinson. We were talking about our column and the various topics on which we’ve written. Tara had a whole stack of WLJs opened up and marked at her favorite parts. We were all enjoying the on-air conversation discussing how life really works, and how to get where you want to go – which is what the columns are always all about – when one of us said – “These would make a good book.” We all laughed and kept right on going. A couple months later we, Francine and Patricia, looked at each other and said, “Why not?” We each felt we had the energy needed for the task (if not time!), and had been thinking about it ever since the interview. We asked Tara which columns she had had in front of her that day and she replied, “All of them.” Wow! We were impressed, and inspired to follow through with our vision. Next, we met for lunch at What’s for Dinner, our favorite place for eating and cogitating (the eggplant sandwiches are incredible!), and made the decision that we didn’t want to learn how to do this ourselves. This meant finding a soul with similar ideas and the skills and knowledge we lacked. The ideal person popped into our minds almost immediately. C. Pic Michel, a gifted artist, author, web designer, marketing phenom and fellow WLJ contributor, creator of the EnlightenMeant cartoons that appear in each issue. We set a date and met with Pic. Instantly we knew we’d made the right choice. Pic suggested doing Little Patricia and Little Fran-

cine cartoon characters. We love to have fun, in the real world and in the imaginary, so we intuitively knew this was a perfect idea. Pic had the technical, left-brained skills, as well as the creative and intuitive right-brain inspirations, to capture the essence of the message we wanted to get across to other people – to find the fire (passions in life), ignite the flame (take action steps) and have fun while feeding this initial spark until it develops into a full blown bonfire (manifests in the real world). Logically and intuitively, the name of the book came to Francine: “Why don’t we call it Right Brain / Left Brain – Use Everything You’ve Got!” Patricia liked the idea and added, “To Create a Great Life!” The book was being born before our eyes. All we had to do was put it in the proper format, which is what Pic is so expert in doing. Magically, everything flowed together and in less than six months we had published a fun, easy-to-read, motivational book on how anyone can find and manifest their passions in life. Our goal had been to have the books ready for the November 19th Victory of Light Expo where we planned to unveil it and offer a presentation on the principles it contained. Although it was a lofty goal and quite a crunch at the end, we pulled it off and the books came in just in time for the show. We live what we write about and we’ve enjoyed watching our passions manifest (we especially love being cartoons!). We did it and you can too! Note: To purchase Francine and Patricia’s book, please visit www.RightBrainLeftBrainBook.com. Patricia and Francine will be offering four workshops based on the book: “Achieving Your Great Life, Parts 1 – 4” from 1:30 – 4:30pm on Saturdays, 1/28, 2/25, 3/31 and 4/28 in 2012 at Enchanted Moments in Milford, $120/Series or $33/each. Part 1-Let the Dream Begin!; Part 2-Figuring Out Your Plan; Part 3-Just Do It!; Part 4-Celebrating. To register, please call 513-831-5508. (Editor’s note: Congratulations Patricia, Francine and Pic! Help for New Business Owners Joanne Franchina of Inner Compass, an intuitive life coaching practice, recently expanded the scope of her weekend coaching intensive, Setting Up Shop: The Holistic Practitioner Goes to Work. A former business analyst in the corporate arena, Franchina says, “It’s exciting and challenging for anyone to start a business. For a new practitioner in the holistic wellness, metaphysical, or spiritual fields—all of which attract people with natural talents in intuitive and highly creative disciplines—the business of ‘setting up shop’ can seem a daunting task.” The learning program features inspirational processes based on universal manifestation principles, as well as practical considerations based on proven business strategies. And with a content focus on Vision, Personal, Business, and Marketing Development, it addresses many needs of the budding spiritual entrepreneur. Franchina noted, “For new practitioners, a common practice that doesn’t work very well is to attempt to do everything themselves. So I’ve added an extensive Ask-the-Experts session to the course.” Ask-The-Experts consists of moderated, interactive panel discussions. Several panelists have confirmed their participation, including: Tara L. Robinson of Whole Living Journal; Francine Hayden of Sea Angels Cruise & Inner Wellness Conference; Monica Vance of Enchanted Moments Metaphysical Gift Shop; Accountant and Financial Services Consultant Diana Hooker; Business Coach Darla LeDoux of AlignandProfit.com; Rose Vanden Eynden of Light Journey Enterprises; and Victor Paruta of Victory of Light Expo. Setting Up Shop begins Friday evening, January 20, continues all day on Saturday, and concludes Sunday afternoon, January 22, 2012. Register at 513.587.9855 or wwwYourInnerCompass.com.

Interview with

Daily OM co-founder

Scott Blum S

cott Blum is the best-selling author of Waiting for Autumn and Summer’s Path and the co-founder of the popular inspirational website DailyOM (www.dailyom.com). The third installment in his novel series, Winter Moon Rises, was released in November, 2011 by Hay House. (See review on page 25.) www.scottblum.net.

Q A

Winter Moon Rises is based on a personal journey into fatherhood – What was your biggest challenge in writing it? “Winter Moon Rises” is by far my most personal book, and although the book is technically fiction, it is based on my own life and I felt it was imperative to be as nakedly honest as I could be while writing it. My biggest challenge was letting go of preconceptions of what bringing a child into this world would be like. I had to transcend my own story and open my heart to what was happening, rather than having any attachments to what I thought would happen. The journey of parenthood is one of the most profound spiritual experiences we can have, and I wanted to share my own perspective of what happens when you have no choice but to live in the moment every step of the way.

Q A

Your previous books explore discovering the heart path and spiritual awakening. How does Winter Moon Rises complete this journey? “Summer’s Path” explores the process of death, making peace with passing and the journey from fear into healing and forgiveness. “Waiting for Autumn” is

14

the exploration of love and the process of becoming whole through following your heart path. And the most recent book, “Winter Moon Rises” is about birth and how the path of inner healing ultimately allows us to emerge from concentrating on the self to use the gifts of selfawareness to bring life into this world. It is the natural progression of self-healing to eventually share the fruits of our personal healing with others, and nothing is more profound than sharing these gifts with our own children.

Q A

Winter Moon Rises has a distinctly male voice. How do you feel the male experience is different from the female experience of becoming a parent? Initially, our human instincts kick into well-defined roles during the initial stages of pregnancy: Males are preoccupied with providing food, shelter, money, etc. while females are busied with preparing the nest, nurturing the fetus and her own body. However, after the physical preparations have been made, the couple begins to share common experiences. In some ways, the journey to the top of the Maslow’s pyramid is accelerated as we collectively re-live our own childhood during those nine months. We try to make sense of our own sense of belonging, self-esteem and goals of self-actualization and ultimately come to terms with how we are going to pass on our own values to our child.

www.WholeLivingJournal.com

Q A

There are several rituals from different spiritual backgrounds within the book. What do you think is the importance of ceremony and ritual in our culture today? With today’s modern lifestyle encouraging and facilitating hyper-individuality and ultimately self-imposed isolation, practicing rituals helps connect us to each other and those that have come before. By practicing the same rituals that our ancestors have, it allows us to draw strength from the entire history of our family line which helps to support us in a unity of mutual honoring. This energetic strength is at the core of the process known as ancestral healing which ultimately serves to allow each of us to take our own powerful place within our family line. However, rituals don’t need to be traditional to serve their purpose. Even if your aren’t able to participate in the ancient rituals of your relatives, creating your own rituals can be beneficial, whether it’s saying special words to loved ones before going to sleep, or taking a break to watch the sunset each day. What’s important is that you devote yourself fully to the moment and use that time to connect to something bigger than yourself.

Clean eating

W

e were recently introduced to the term “clean eating” by a personal trainer who was advocating this as a way to eat for optimal health. While we haven’t found a concise definition, clean eating involves avoiding processed foods and building a diet around natural, unrefined proteins, carbohydrates and fats that our great-grandmothers might have served to their families. It minimizes or eliminates starches – bread, pasta, potatoes, most cereals, and added sugars -- while encouraging the consumption of lean protein. In fact, the trainer suggested a significant increase in our protein intake and making sure that every meal and snack includes at least some protein.

A commitment to these eating habits might require significant adjustment, such as no sandwiches for lunch or pasta for dinner, but it’s great for keeping energy steady throughout long, busy days and is also helpful for weight control. This master recipe for cooking chicken breasts will help assure that serving of protein at dinner. This basic technique for cooking boneless, skinless chicken breast works just as well for other meats/fishes, such as salmon fillets, boneless pork chops or turkey breast cutlets. Add a side of steamed broccoli, green beans or another vegetable for a “clean,” healthy, quick and delicious, trainer-approved meal.

Recipe: Master Chicken Breast (Serves 4) Instructions: Step 1: Preheat a large frying pan (use nonstick for easy cleanup) over medium-high heat, adding cooking spray or a bit of canola oil when the pan heats up. Season your chicken on both sides with salt and pepper, then brown one side for 3-4 minutes. Turn and brown the other side for 2 minutes. Remove chicken to a plate and tent with foil. Step 2: Reduce heat to medium and add 1-2 cups chopped veggies. Be sure to include one or two aromatic vegetables (onion, garlic, shallots, leeks, carrot or celery). Also good to add at this stage are sliced mushrooms, chopped fennel and/or diced peppers. Stir-fry for 10663 Loveland-Madeira Rd., Suite 162 • Loveland, OH 45140 4-5 minutes, until the veggies are tender. 513.752.9288 • Fax: 513.722.0752 Step 3: Add liquid ingredients (about 1 cup) to complete cooking and toads@wholelivingjournal.com blend the flavors in the pan. Chicken stock is reliable, but you can experiment with liquids such as orange juice, tomato juice, white wine, water or a mixture of any of these. Heat the sauce through and put the chicken back in the pan along with any juices that have accumulated in the plate. Heat well, adjust seasonings to taste, and serve.

Peanuts: Another terrific protein source The earliest known records of peanuts show that the plant was indigenous to Peru, in South America where the Incas ground the nuts into a paste. From there, European explorers ferried the plants to North America and Africa. Several processes for making peanut butter have been developed, but it has been only in the recent century that hydrogenated oils were added to enhance the creaminess and expand the shelf life. Peanuts are rich sources of protein, folate, vitamin E and monounsaturated fats. Organic brands of peanut butter are available, as well as supermarket varieties that do not have the harmful hydrogenated oils. The healthy varieties are a bit more costly and usually need to be stirred occasionally to re-suspend the oils.

Recipe:VietnameseLettuce Wraps (Serves 6) Ingredients: 1 jicama, peeled ½ cup Hoisin sauce ½ cup peanut butter ½ cup tomato sauce 3 carrots, scrubbed 1 onion, peeled 1tablespoon fresh mincedgarlic, divided ¼ cup olive oil, divided 8 ounces frozen shrimp 4 eggs 2 ounces fresh cilantro 2 ounces fresh basil ¼ cup peanuts 1 – 2 bunches fresh romaine lettuce, leaves separated 1 package rice wrappers

Instructions: Combine Hoisin sauce, peanut butter and tomato sauce and whisk until thoroughly blended. Set aside. Cut jicama, carrots and onion into julienned strips. Saute strips with 2 teaspoons fresh garlic and 1/8 cup olive oil, stirring occasionally, until crisp tender. Transfer to a medium serving bowl. Meanwhile, sauté shrimp with remaining olive oil and garlic until they turn white and lose their transparency. Transfer shrimp to a small serving dish. Beat eggs until well scrambled, then fry in a large flat pan over medium high heat until thoroughly cooked without stirring. Remove from heat and gently roll the egg and slice into strips. Place in a small serving dish. Serve wrappers, lettuce leaves, peanuts, basil, cilantro, eggs, shrimp, jicama mixture and sauce. To assemble each wrap, dip a rice wrapper in a large bowl filled with hot water

just until moistened. Lay wrapper flat on a plate. When the wrap softens, about 1 minute, place a leaf of lettuce in middle and fill with ingredients, as desired. Pull wrapper gently, but tightly, around the filled leaf. Serve with sauce for dipping.

The Female Menstruation cycle:

a

Powerful Tool

for Learning, Healing, and Spirituality by Mica M. Renes, N.D. ©

W

e live in a society where the vast majority pretends that a woman’s monthly bleeding time does not exist. The exception is an acknowledgement of its related chaotic emotional behavior, called premenstrual syndrome (PMS), during which time many women feel as if they should be ashamed of themselves. After 5,000 years of patriarchy, women have now gained the “right” to do as men do, but many lack awareness and respect for female energy. Further, the lack of respect for and mistreatment of both women and Mother Earth is woefully similar: over-fertilized, under-nourished, and being taken for granted. As a result, the natural and self-sustaining cycle of life on earth now is in grave danger. Yet redemption and transformation for both women and Mother Earth can be found through the feminine process of observing cycles. One of the ways women can regain their self-respect, wisdom and health is by looking into their menstruation cycle and its deep power. The menstruation cycle, also called the moon cycle, covers the same time frame as the approximate 29-day cycle of the moon: from new moon through full moon to new moon, and from bleeding time through ovulation to bleeding again. The monthly bleeding time is the time in each woman’s life to reconnect with her spiritual self, to let go of daily responsibilities, take care of herself by resting, listening to dreams, and allowing new knowledge to sink in. This is the time when the doorway to inner knowing is wide open. Marion Zimmer Bradley’s novel, The Mists of Avalon, tells the story of the women and priestesses in the Celtic, matriarchal tradition and how they used their bleeding time - or the new moon time if they didn’t bleed anymore - to gain the wisdom for which they were honored. It also recounts the story of the change, with the coming of King Arthur, to a patriarchal interpretation of life that undid women’s wisdom and reduced them to second-class citizens. This fictional book dramatizes an example of women losing their power. When individual sovereignty of wise women and men, and cooperation between them, changed to a hierarchical model with a sole sovereign, the monthly cycle of women became labeled as dirty, weak, or a curse. Women eventually accepted

18

this view, letting go of their primary access to knowledge and wisdom. With the switch to patriarchy, the physical body, and especially female bodies, became labeled as dirty, dangerous and sinful. God(s) became male, and sexuality lost its power of spiritual expression and healing. The shift from matriarchy to patriarchy was in line with the development of humanity and provided a lesson in learning to deal with power. However, with a polluted earth, world hunger and the shift of the ages, it is time for masculine and feminine energies to come into balance. This newest shift is intended to propel us into multi-dimensional awareness, connection with our galactic community, the rising of energetic frequencies, a letting go of judgment, and the demise of warring among religions. It is time for women to retrieve feminine wisdom from the realms of the unconscious. The bleeding time, or new moon time, is a time of the void (the sparkling darkness) and for being open to the wisdom and knowledge of the universe, and the celebration of the here and now, which is the doorway to all dimensions and wisdom. Celebrating the menstrual cycle, or the moon cycle, is one of the most powerful ways to gather essential knowledge and wisdom. So, women, start telling the people in your life when you have your moon time, and honor yourself. Take at least one day on the couch, perhaps with a hot water bottle on your belly, and eat chocolates. For women who take the pill, schedule your bleeding time during the new moon time. Women with irregular or no bleeding: take the new moon day off. Through this amazing process we can heal our planet and her beings, one woman at a time. 2012 Moon cycle: Jan 9, Full; Jan 23, New; Feb 7, Full; Feb 21, New; Mar 8, Full; Mar 22, New; Apr 6, Full; Apr 21, New; May 6, Full; May 20, New; June 4, Full; June 19, New; July 3, Full; July 19, New; Aug 2, Full; Aug 17, New; Aug 31, Full; Sept 16, New; Sept 30, Full; Oct 15, New; Oct 29, Full; Nov 13, New; Nov 28, Full; Dec 13, New; Dec 28, Full. Health is a choice Not Chance Herbs ‘n Such, by Mimi Tagher

T

his new year we can change the way we think about our health. Instead of putting off today what we promise to do tomorrow (or Monday, or maybe even next month), we can make a commitment to treat our health as a verb…that’s right, an action word, where we become an active participants. Remember, health is a journey, not a destination, and the work that is put in today will reap great benefits in the future.

Did you know… * There are toxins in the food we eat, the water we drink,

The Standard Process Purification is a 21day program that utilizes whole food supplements, whole, organic and unprocessed food, and water to cleanse the body which results in more energy, a healthy weight, and improved digestion. The Fast Track Liver Detox is an 11-day program that includes seven days of healing foods to prepare the body for a one day juice fast, followed by three more days of eating healthy foods to seal in the results. Make a commitment to talk to your healthcare practitioner about what it would take to help you feel better and live a longer more vital life…now. Build the foundation for a healthier lifestyle…now. Great potential resides in your body. Make the choice today to activate it, don’t leave it to chance.

and the air we breathe that directly affects our health. Happy New Year!

* If the latest trend continues, statistics show there is a good possibility that by the year 2015, 75% of adults will be overweight and 41% will be obese.

* A large number of cancers are preventable. * An ACS report in 2006 showed that one third of all cancers are directly linked to obesity, poor diet and inactivity.

About the author: Mimi Tagher, LAc, LMT is nationally board certified in acupuncture, Chinese herbology and Oriental Medicine. She practices at Synergy Holistic Health Center in Florence, Ky., and in Blue Ash. 859.525.5000, www.synergyholistichealth.com.

* Osteoporosis is preventable. * Toxins disrupt our hormones. The list goes on and on. Our bodies are miraculous machines. We can age gracefully. We just need to give our bodies the fuel they need and give them a “tune up” once in a while. My favorite “tune ups” (in addition to getting body work) are the Purification Program from Standard Process and the Fast Track Liver Detox by Ann Gittleman. What I like about them is that they are about eating and changing habits, not about depriving the body. Both use liver friendly foods such as leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables, and healthy fruits and proteins to give the body what it needs to function optimally.

The End,

or the Beginning? by Lea Smith

A

s the New Year begins, let us not forget the old minister who predicted the end of the world on May 21, 2011. He researched and felt he knew for sure he had everything right. He had to be right because he was a man of God after all. He was a minster and had lived a very long life. He knew the Bible. His announcement about the end of the world was reported in most papers and was covered by the daily news on television. It caused a lot of people to really think about the end. Some scoffed, some began to rethink their lives and some believed it so much that they quit their jobs. Some people even began getting rid of their savings, homes, anything and everything they owned. What most people do not realize is that for some of us it was the end. Not a physical end, but the end of the way we had always thought, and the beginning of new thoughts, new changes. It forced us to acknowledge how things were and to ask ourselves if we wanted our lives to change. And, if so, how did we want them to change? For some of us, we were on a spiritual journey. We knew it wasn’t the “end of the world,” but rather a “new begin-

ning;” a new way of drawing closer to God by accepting responsibility for our thoughts and creating joy in our lives. And then spreading that joy to each person we encounter, even if just with a simple smile and a “hello.” Finding our purpose in serving God and humankind is definitely a new way to look at things. That day, May 21, 2011, was a special day for me. It was the end of the old me and the beginning of a new me. That day I was blessed to be at a conference, called the “Live Your Best Life Conference,” with six wonderful speakers. Each speaker told their story about how they got to where they are today, living their best life and sharing what they learned along the way so that we too could live our best lives. They spoke about how to ask, how to bless, how to seek inside for answers, not outside. How far are you willing to search for that joy, that happiness that is God inside you? You might not have experienced a life-re-thinking-day on May 21, but hopefully sometime during 2011, you

had a re-thinking-day where you too encountered a person, a book, a lecture, or even a show that caused you to say “yes” to a wonderful new way of living. A way that opened you up, and created a new way of thinking. And so, may this New Year begin with seeking joy and living your best life. May you be continually blessed in this most wonderful year of 2012.

My Journey Cancer Support in the Community by Rick Benedict

C

ancer strikes one in two men and one in three women. This means virtually all of us have been, or will be, affected by cancer. But there is hope. Right within our own community is an organization, Cancer Support Community (formerly The Wellness Community), whose resources are available to anyone affected by cancer, for no charge. Cancer Support Community (CSC) has but one purpose, to provide support, education and hope. I became acquainted with CSC 6 years ago when my wife was diagnosed with stage three colon cancer. As we tumbled through the emotional abyss brought on by this news, we had no idea of what to do or how to cope. Fortunately we were referred to CSC and my wife was successful in defeating the demon. We are most grateful to the surgeons, doctors and treatments that provided the medical tools and technology necessary to win the fight, but we are equally indebted to CSC for their role in helping us deal with the emotional stress and instability during that dark time. At this point in my life, I am fortunate to have time available

to give something back to CSC. I volunteer in the office and serve as a CSC ambassador providing updated information about CSC to medical offices in the community. CSC provides support groups for patients and for their loved ones. They offer educational programs, featuring doctors and nurses who share vital information about treatment and side-effect management. Social events are organized to help people feel more connected, less isolated. And there are many types of healthy lifestyle classes one can take to reduce stress and improve physical and emotional health and well-being. One of the healthy lifestyle classes is Gentle Yoga, which, like everything at CSC, is offered free of charge to cancer patients, survivors and loved ones. Yoga is available six times every week, with classes at CSC’s facilities in Blue Ash and Ft. Wright, at Christ Hospital, and at Dunham Recreation Center in Price Hill. I have witnessed the many benefits this class offers. Yoga gives those who are actively involved in a battle with cancer, either as a cancer survivor or as a loved one, an additional weapon in their arsenal to battle the physical, mental and emotional stress associated with the disease. Yoga also provides a common experience for the participants and a sense of connection as well as many other benefits, including strength, relaxation, weight loss, rejuvenation, flexibility, and an improved ability to endure treatment. Yoga is but one of many healthy lifestyle programs offered at no cost by CSC. Tai Chi, Pilates, Zumba Gold and Cooking for Wellness are also offered. CSC can be contacted at 513.791.4060 or 859.331.5568, or at www.cancersupportcommunity.org/Cincinnati.

January and February 2012 by Diane Samsel

anuary 1: Second Quarter Moon. New

Year’s projects pick up steam and you feel on top of everything. A lot of energy and talent goes into getting things organized. Don’t be frustrated by that one dominating individual. January 8: Mercury in Capricorn. A struggle breaks out between practicality and passion. There’s a lot of excess and positive energy to take matters off course but it’s best to focus on trimming things down so they fit properly. Do so and you’ll see a clear path to success. January 9: Full Moon. Realism pays big dividends. Emotions are best enjoyed when subordinated to an intelligent, well-crafted strategy. Care about the direction your work is taking you and you’ll be rewarded down the road. January 14: Venus in Pisces. Relationship problems dissolve with the right spiritual approach. Both parties must embrace the struggle between the need to sacrifice and the need to control. Things will never be perfect; that’s the lesson. January 16: Fourth Quarter Moon. Anything that gets done requires the support of your social group. Share your goal with them whole-heartedly and enjoy the flow of cooperation. January 20: Sun in Aquarius. Powerful, but difficult to define, concepts can successfully be launched now with the right words and strategies. Even though you may feel emotionally tense and super sensitive, your enthusiasm wins the day. January 23: New Moon and Mars Retrograde. This new moon launches a long period that Mars spends in Virgo. The suggestion is that on some level we’re all taking destiny in our own hands and shaping a new tomorrow. The retrograde period is a perfect time to develop a master plan for important future moves. January 27: Mercury in Aquarius. The spiritual, magical and creative energies of the universe seem to have a pipeline straight into your brain. The good news is that common sense prevails. Use this time to enroll others in a fabulous dream. February 3: Neptune in Pisces. Use your heart and mind to channel the cosmos’ newest program for planet Earth. Dreams and visions are important so pay attention because the future is talking to you. Enjoy all the stimulating and exciting ideas released when Neptune enters its own sign. February 7: Full Moon and Saturn Retrograde. This is a time of rebuilding confidence and launching new, ambitious projects. Now is the time to take pause to go over everything

that’s been put into action in the past few months. Take pride in the progress you’re making. Society is shifting and you can make a big contribution to the new social order. Power struggles emerge to let you know cooperation is required over dominance. February 8: Venus in Aries. In relationships, remember that what’s really important to you should fit with the ideals of others. Sudden, intense eruptions in your social order serve to remind you that things are out of balance. February 13: Mercury in Pisces. This is a “hitch your wagon to a star” energy. The conjunction of Sun to Neptune beams down a dreamy illumination in which all manner of inspired thoughts blossom. The suggestion is that if you apply your thinking to something that really needs changing you can make great progress. Keep on your own path; you alone know your truth. February 14: Fourth Quarter Moon. Your mind might skip from one mood to another as you embrace a new reality. It’s an adjustment period so hang in there. Compassion for self and others wells up powerfully to cause a significant and positive change. February 19: Sun in Pisces. Hard work is emotionally and spiritually rewarding during this passage. Put yourself on the map with something totally new. Your sense of ambition and responsibility anchors you in reality as you swing out into uncharted territories. February 21: New Moon. A sensitive outlook colors everything during this Pisces new moon. In spite of the specialness of this moon, people still put their best foot forward to make things happen for the group. We all work emotionally and energetically toward major changes that will stabilize our relationships. February 29: Second Quarter Moon. The mind needs a channel for all of the creative downloads it’s experiencing. Have a plan and share it with others to ground things in reality; then let the creative energy take shape to become something you believe in strongly. Book Review Winter Moon Rises by Scott Blum (Hay House, 2011) The third installment in DailyOM’s co-founder Scott Blum's best-selling series of enchanting novels, Winter Moon Rises continues where the semiautobiographical Waiting for Autumn left off. This book follows Scott and his soul mate, Madisyn, as they prepare for their most profound adventure together: the journey of bringing their first child into this world. Discovering that the miracle of birth is not limited by the physical world, Scott and Madisyn embark on an insight-filled spiritual awakening, where they discover how their entire history has ultimately laid the foundation for their expected child's future. Exploring ancient rituals, unseen worlds, and ancestral healing, the couple soon discovers how we all remain connected to the magical world of unborn children long after we become adults. Much more than a traditional story about expecting parents, Winter Moon Rises is a metaphysical page-turner that plunges to the deepest emotional and spiritual depths which contain the secrets of how our souls work with one another. This heartwarming adventure captures the imagination and reveals what it truly means to be a spiritual being having the ultimate human experience. Note: Tara L. Robinson will interview Scott Blum on January 17, 3:30-4:30pm, WAIF 88.3FM or www.waif883.org.

The Golden Motorcycle Gang: A Story of Transformation by Jack Canfield and William Gladstone (Hay House, 2011)

The Golden Motorcycle Gang: A Story of Transformation is Jack Canfield’s, co-author of the New York Times bestselling Chicken Soup for the Soul series and leading figure in the self-help movement, first new book in five years. Part autobiography, part spiritual adventure story, and a 2012 resource guide, this exciting new book is a wake-up call for those who believe they have come here to make a difference in the world. Canfield recounts his fascinating life story and how it led to a vision during a meditation of being part of a golden, soul-traveling, motorcycle gang who saw the earth in peril and came here to assist during the crisis. When he shared this story with co-author William Gladstone (The Twelve), Gladstone recognized that his own story and mission was aligned with Canfield’s and insisted, “We need to tell this story, because there are more of us out there!” Canfield always felt he had a life “mission.” In this book, he uncovers the synchronicities that led to his meeting up again with the “Gang” to fulfill their unique destinies in assisting the planet during a critical juncture in her evolutionary cycle and he reveals how everyone, individually and collectively, have the capacity to bring about global change. According to co-author William Gladstone “Through the metaphor of The Golden Motorcycle Gang, we offer a hopeful alternative to doom and gloom scenarios and awaken you to your highest potential. This optimistic book is for those who believe they are part of a group destined to work together to create a better planet and for those who feel a desire to create a more hopeful future for humanity.” The book also is one of the first books ever to include QR codes that link to videos of characters in the book, including Michael Beckwith from the foreword, and Barbara Marx Hubbard. BREATHE MORE LIFE INTO YOUR BODY noring and sleep apnea lead to low oxygen levels in the body. In turn, this leads to physical problems people don’t usually associate with sleep issues. They affect your life at home, on the job, and your relationships. Dr. Bosma helps patients who snore through a unique system of evaluation and treatment called Oral Systemic Balance. Breathe more life into your body! Call us for information or to schedule your sleep evaluation.
