Letter from the Editor
Tara L. Robinson, editor@wholelivingjournal.com
Deep Roots uilding relationships, creating community, making friends, establishing partnerships...and trust; it doesn’t happen overnight. We are very excited to be celebrating our 10th anniversary with this issue, and believe me, we didn’t get here overnight. It takes time to grow roots and we are pleased that in ten years we have done precisely that. We now have deep roots in the community and are glad to be so firmly planted. We’re not the new kid on the block anymore. We have a history, we have a story to tell. We’ve laughed and we’ve cried; we survived the recession, and we’re stronger for it. We have connections with people and businesses throughout the city, across the country, and around the globe; and a solid foundation upon which to build bigger and even better things in the next ten years. Ten is a powerful number. It is the fundamental and formative number of the Old Testament. Being formed of the pillar and the circle, it is the balance of the masculine and the feminine. It is the symbol for “wholeness.” In numerology it is believed that through the vibration of ten, we have the insight to recognize and understand the needs of humanity, and the ability to bring peace and harmony to all. It signifies “new creation” and usually brings with it all sorts of new changes. You might have noticed that Whole Living Journal has a new look. In honor of serving the community for an entire decade, and in the spirit of the power of ten, we’re giving WLJ a make-over. It will likely take a few issues to complete the transition, but we’re excited for our readers to watch us grow. The image used in our new logo is a zen symbol for “wholeness,” how perfect is that?
B
As we consider all the ways to update and evolve, we’d love to hear your opinion. What do you like most about WLJ? What do you want to see more of, or less, in each issue? Which columns are your favorites? What topics, or causes, are you most passionate about? What about design and aesthetic preferences? Technology, would you use a WLJ app, etc.? Please contact us at info@wholelivingjournal.com and share your thoughts so we know how we can best serve you now and in the future. My intention for this issue is for it to be so blazin’ hot-off-thepress that it smokes in our readers’ hands. That its transformative power would be palpable. That it would feel balanced and healthy and alive with power. That with the turn of each page, our readers discover a safe, yet stimulating, place to rest their heads and hearts. Breathing space where enlightenment is cultivated. A call to return again and again, because somehow, someway, this magazine is a channel for grace. This magazine is a voice for truth and a summons for radical change. Here the sun shines. Here the birds sing. Here we are encouraged of better ways and happier days. To celebrate, we’re throwing a party, and everyone’s invited! Please join us on May 30th, 6-9pm at New Thought Unity for a free networking event and opportunity to connect with the community. Meet WLJ columnists and advertisers, hear the story of how WLJ began...and enjoy live music by Michelle Christine Garza. We’d like to especially thank all the advertisers who have supoorted us through the years. Without their investments, we would not be here. Thank you!

Reader Feedback “I just wanted to congratulate you on your Mar/Apr ‘13 edition of WLJ. I don’t know if it’s just my eagerness for each new magazine, but it seems this edition is literally bursting with inspiring information and perceptions even more so than usual! So many well-written articles, and Tara has outdone herself with “Return to Reverence” (Letter from the Editor). Thanks so much to all of you for putting out this journal. Sometimes it’s just the thing that gets me turned in the right direction in my week!” Joani Lacy, author Hollister House Trilogy Cincinnati, OH “How fortunate we are to have Tara Robinson as editor and publisher of Whole Living Journal. She built on the remarkable and solid foundation created by Kathryn Martin Ossege, founder and five-year editor and publisher of the magazine. Tara took the reins during 2008 and guided the magazine through a whole new phase of growth. I am grateful that our community has supported Tara with advertising so she could maintain the publication’s size. Tara has wisely invested our gifts by greatly expanding our outreach possibilities through development of an online edition and through offering weekly broadcasts with Judy Peace on WAIF 88.3 FM. I continually stand amazed by what Tara has and continues to accomplish. Her gifts of high energy, joy, kindness, intelligence, gratitude, and desire to learn make her the perfect person to move us forward for many years to come. Congratulations, Tara, on a terrific job!”
Spiritual SPotlight Global Water Dances Global Water Dances comes to Cincinnati this June! In this visionary global initiative, groups across the world unite to raise awareness of water purity and availability through the power of the arts. Under the artistic leadership of the legendary Fanchon Shur, renowned for the spiritual and community engagement of her large-scale choreographic productions, and Shari Lauter, Composer/Music Director, performers will pay homage to the spiritual and life-giving sustenance of water. Over 100 dancers, musicians, and singers will perform at the spectacular Serpentine Wall during Paddlefest/Pedalfest 2013 against a backdrop of thousands of kayakers on the Ohio River. The power of water has inspired the creative process. Fanchon explains: “My vision of honoring life-giving water through dance is inspired by water itself. The fluid element establishes the potential for the ‘form creating process’ by its very nature. Water flows in different currents, often side by side, yet, each manages to manifest its intention in the dance, to create a rich and complex harmony.” Original music includes the use of gourd water drums, which will be filled with Ohio River water during the opening ceremony. The organizers hope to make Cincinnati a regular location for this biennial event, joining with the global and local community on this important issue. Almost one billion people, roughly one in eight, do not have access to clean water. Performance: June 22nd, 10 a.m. at the Serpentine Wall, Ohio River at the end of Broadway. onoring the seeker and sacred in all of us: that was my dream. It followed me around like a puppy that begged for attention and chewed on my peace of mind. The details were sketchy, but I envisioned creating a means by which holistic practitioners could promote their services and share their knowledge with people from all walks of life. Allowing myself to be guided by the Universe, I first formed FLOW, a networking community. When I searched for a suitable local publication in which to promote FLOW and its business members, I hit a deadend. There was nothing.

work. The first issue of Whole Living Journal—a scant sixteen pages, half its current size—went on display at a dozen locations. My office phone started ringing. People wanted to write articles. Readers offered ideas and suggestions. Businesses volunteered to display the magazine; many purchased advertising space—the lifeblood of any publication. There was no mistaking the signs; our community had embraced the magazine.
Five Years Later
Five years later, I felt called to move on. Finding no one to purchase the magazine, I halted publication. I thought Whole Living Journal had reached the end of its lifecycle. Once again, the Universe had other plans. Tara L. Robinson called to introduce herself and tell me about her dream: to be the magazine’s next publisher and editor. For the past five years, her vision and seemingly boundless energy and enthusiasm have strengthened and expanded its reach. Congratulations, Tara, on a job well done.
A Good Idea
One day, FLOW member Lynn Allison handed me a copy of an out-of-town holistic magazine and said, “Cincinnati needs a publication like this. I’ll do whatever it takes to help you start one.” The Universe had provided me with a solution and an eager assistant. I was intrigued by the idea, but wondered if I could actually do it. “I’m a writer,” I said to Lynn. “I don’t know anything about publishing a magazine.” She said, “Maybe The Journey Continues that’s true, but you ran a business for years When asked my favorite part of publishIssue 1 of WLJ debuted in 2003 and helped other people start businesses. Signs and Success
The pieces continued to fall into place. It was getting harder to say no. After weeks of soul searching, I reached a decision: I’d publish two issues. If I was intended to continue, I’d receive a clear sign. Lynn, Teri, Heidi and I rolled up our sleeves and went to

Earth-Shares CSA Organic produce will be available in Loveland
by Heidi Bright Parales Organic, fresh, local produce will be available in Loveland again this year. The Earth-Shares Community Supported Agriculture cooperative features about 22 weeks of vegetables grown on land leased from Grailville at 932 O'Bannonville Road, Loveland, Ohio 45140. “Getting an abundance of organic produce all summer that is fresh and locally grown is a special summer treat,” says Laura Carmack, of Loveland, a member since 2011 and this year’s treasurer. Shareholders split produce from four organically certified acres. The CSA offers 100 shares this year, including working shares, and still has some openings available. Karen Huseman is the new garden manager. “The mutual commitment between those who want to eat well and those who want to grow well makes Earthshares CSA work,” she says. Huseman and long-term Earth-Shares CSA gardeners Steve Edwards and Mary Lu Lageman have already started tomatoes, lettuce, spinach, onions, sweet potatoes, eggplant, kale, chard, and basil in a heated greenhouse to prepare for the season. Produce pickup begins during mid to late May, depending on weather conditions. A full non-working share is $400. Mem-

AreEver YouGoing to
Get Happy?
by Pamela Quinn was having lunch with a friend the other day and we talked about life; kids, partners, paying bills, and health. I’m a divorced single mom and so is she. We are both in the process of rebuilding financial security. We are both beyond forty and facing the battle against time. She is stressed out and has put on weight and is feeling exhausted. Her ex-husband drives her crazy and her young son struggles with school. She took a job years ago for the security thinking it would be a steppingstone. She hates the job, but has settled into the fact that it is her financial future. Don’t get me wrong. I’ve got my own issues, but they just seem so small in comparison to the overall lack of joy in her life. She’s lost her sparkle.
I
I do. She goes to an occasional yoga class and marvels at how it makes her feel both physically and mentally. A few times a month she sits down to meditate and might even go to a healing workshop or try a new alternative modality. She believes in God and prays. The difference between her and I is that she doesn’t take a disciplined holistic approach to her practice. You see, if you intend to be disease free, live well into old age, manifest your desires, and connect to your life’s purpose, you gotta do the work. That means you have to consistently choose the best option for body, mind, and spirit. Every single day, you must do the work of being happy. You must commit to a disciplined practice for your body, mind, and spirit.
The Same, Yet Different
Now the interesting thing about her and I is that we are both into yoga, meditation, and holistic wellness. She loves it as much as

Body, Mind and Spirit
Each and every day, you must take care of your physical body. It is the temple for your Soul. Feed it organic, fresh, and healthy foods. Fill it with pure water. Move it. If your body is not cared for consistently, you are never going to get happy. Never really truly happy; there’ll always be a missing piece. You have to take care of your mind. If you are not aware that you are having thoughts, if you never master your thoughts, if you don’t understand that your thoughts hold the key to your destiny, you are never going to get happy. Spend time in silence every day. Monitor your thoughts and use affirmations to bust through negative thinking. Meditate every single day without exception. Approach each day with awe and innocence. Live in this moment releasing thoughts of the past and embracing the uncertainty of the future. This moment right now is the only one that counts. If you don’t understand that, you will never get happy. Lastly, create a tangible relationship with Spirit. When life is not going the way you want it to, trust that there is something else going on that you might not quite understand just yet. Choose to get happy. Labyrinths Walking the
Enlightened Path by Sallie Hilvers
L
abyrinths have been found all over the world dating from earliest antiquity, providing a sacred space for contemplation, comfort, and insight. A labyrinth is not a maze. It’s a single path, usually circular, that can be used as a walking meditation. One can’t get lost on a labyrinth; simply follow the path to the center and then follow the same path out again. Some labyrinths are made in a simple, classic style. Others are variations on the famous medieval labyrinth found at the Chartres Cathedral in France. Some are contemporary or natural in design. Outdoor labyrinths can be as simple as a mown grass path; others are constructed of bricks, pavers or even granite. An indoor labyrinth can be a portable painted canvas floor cloth or permanently inlaid in the floor. Labyrinths are thought to enhance right-brain activity. People use labyrinths for problem solving, grief and conflict resolution, meditation, and modern-day pilgrimage. Research studies have shown that walking a labyrinth reduces stress. There is no right or wrong way to walk a labyrinth, but there are a few suggestions. During the walk to the center, you may choose to release any prob-

Moon Meditation
How to use the phases of the Moon to power up your practice by Carol Wentz Randaci
editation is an ancient and powerful practice which can lead to the space between thoughts and words where one experiences existence outside the individual mind; beyond me and mine, you and yours. It becomes a time to encounter life as infinite, undivided, ever present, ever active; where one’s heart begins to beat with the natural rhythm of the source of existence. It connects one with the rhythmic pulse of one’s true nature, and can be used as a service to humanity when the heart is employed as a channel to transmit and receive love for everyone.
M
Using the Phases of the Moon
Some people find it helpful to use the power of the various phases of the moon to enhance their meditation practices. These moon phases can offer an energetic support by defusing or increasing the pull of gravity and other energies which influence our bodies and psyches. The moon itself does not exert an effect but, in combination with the other celestial bodies, it can enhance and alter the concentration of focused intention. Individuals and groups all around the world meditate at the time of the Full and New Moon with the aim of serving humanity while also furthering their own development. The objective of these meditations is to transform the mental and spiritual climate of our world into a place of truth, justice and cooperation, which are all components of love. By following the phases of the Moon, we are reminded of the natural cycles that run through our lives.
Why Meditate During the Full Moon?
The five-day period around the Full Moon opens extraordinary portals for supporting the spiritual regeneration of life on the planet. The time of the Full Moon is a period when spiritual energies are uniquely available and it is said that during this time the veils between the worlds are thinned allowing easier access. With this access we can see, feel and communicate with everything around us on a much deeper level. Each month the moon has a different astrological signature. The inflowing energies carry the specific qualities of the constellation influencing that particular month. These energies play sequentially upon humanity, establishing “divine attributes” in our consciousness. Full Moon meditation can be a powerful tool when used as a channel for receiving light and love and for easing distribution of universal grace.

A Full Moon phase tends to activate emotions and feelings as they are brought to light by the reflection of the illuminated moon. Since what is in one is in the whole, when an individual is released from constraints so then is the whole to some degree. We can to learn to process the “energy in motion” (E-motion) that has created who we are. Once those emotions that are out of balance have been resolved, one feels lighter, more energetic, free, and able to hold more light.
Significance of Meditating During a New Moon
The day of the New Moon is the end of one lunar month and the beginning of the new one. The time of the New Moon is a time for renewal, new beginnings, new commitment to our personal development, and a renewed commitment to easing the pain of the world by replacing it with love. It is a time to focus our combined spiritual energy to create this new world. The New Moon is a time for introspection, when it’s easier to go within to discover who you truly are, not as an individual, but as a representative of creative power. The New Moon diminishes the pull of emotions. Just this alone can bring a sense of balance and ease. During this phase one can focus on creating a new vision of oneself and the world. The New Moon, or dark moon, is the most powerful time to remove things from our lives and replace any negative influences with positive ones. At each New Moon, people all around the world hold a vision of a world at peace, where humanity honors one another and every person is living to their full divine potential. Anyone can join in to uphold this vision and allow the energy to empower this sacred vision.
Other Phases of the Moon
Although the Full and New Moon phases are the most widely used for group and individual meditations, the other phases of the moon have their own particular energetic signature. Here are a few traditional characterizations of the additional phases of the moon.
Waxing to Full - Preparing
It is a time to fill up with new ideas, new challenges. According to Celtic tradition, the waxing of the moon (when it passes from new to full) is a time of inner transformation that gives us a heightened awareness of the voice of our soul.

First Quarter - Manifesting
The First Quarter is the mid-point between the New Moon and the Full Moon. Well Care Plant the thought that you are attracting for the Whole Family! new positive things into your life that will grow as the moon waxes.
Waxing Gibbous - Sharing
The days leading up to the Full Moon are a time to focus on the culmination of the work which began during the First Quarter. This is the time to meditate on the work which has begun to manifest.
Waning Gibbous - Perfecting
The days leading up to the New Moon are a time to banish those things which no longer serve us and that we no longer want in our life. Meditate on cleansing and removing all negativity and unwanted situations and personal attributes.
Last Quarter - Evaluating
The Last Quarter is a time for ending things as the moon is almost at the end of its cycle. Ask yourself if you have any
hidden or suppressed negative energy that can be replaced with positive energy. This is a good time to balance the energies within the body.
Waning to New - Surrendering
The Waning to New Moon is the time to remove unwanted situations from our lives. This is the time that deals with letting go of struggle, prejudice and perceptions. From ten and a half to fourteen days after the full moon is the time to cleanse ourselves of the things we no longer want in our lives. the World’s Healthiest Diet - the Mediterranean Diet vidence keeps mounting that our favorite way of eating – known as the Mediterranean Diet – is not only deliciously satisfying but also fabulous at keeping us healthy. A study published earlier this year in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine compared people on lowfat diets with the Mediterranean one (it includes “healthy” fats) over a seven-year period. The benefits to the latter group in cardiovascular health were striking, demonstrating a 30 percent lower risk of death from heart disease or stroke. This way of

eating is based mostly on plant food sources, along with seafood, and encourages consumption of olive oil, nuts and wine. Instructions: Heat the olive oil in large Dutch oven or soup pot, and add chopped onion and a generous pinch of salt. Cook, stirring, until tender, about five minutes. Add the leeks and garlic. Stir together for a few minutes, and add the tomatoes. Cook, stirring, until the tomatoes have cooked down slightly and mixture is fragrant, five to 10 minutes. Add beans and remaining vegetables except the green beans, and bring back to a simmer. Cover and simmer over low heat for 45 minutes to an hour. Taste and adjust the seasonings. While the soup is simmering, make the pesto: mash the garlic with a generous pinch of salt in a mortar and pestle. Remove it and set aside. Grind the basil to a paste in the mortar, a handful at a time, then add the garlic back in and mix together well. Work in the olive oil a tablespoon at a time, then stir in the cheese. [You may use prepared pesto] Add the pasta to the simmering soup about 10 minutes before serving, and cook until al dente. Add pepper, taste and adjust salt. Stir the blanched green beans into the soup and heat through. Serve, adding a spoonful of pesto to each bowl to stir in. Pass additional Parmesan for sprinkling.

Food Allergies Each year, an increasing number of Americans find they have food allergies, to the point where it seems like an explosion of cases, at least compared to a few decades ago when food allergies were relatively uncommon. And yet, even more people may be plagued with such allergies today than are diagnosed. By some estimates, about one in ten children and one in 20 adults have food allergies. The most common offenders are peanuts, tree nuts of various kinds, milk protein, fish, wheat, shellfish, soy and egg, though it’s possible to have allergies to other fruits, vegetables and meats. Allergies to nuts, peanuts and shellfish are considered life long and can be severe or life threatening. Other food allergies usually cause milder symptoms and can be misdiagnosed as irritable bowel syndrome, rashes, swelling or respiratory illness. Skin and blood tests can help with diagnosis, but the most reliable method is eliminating foods from the diet and watching for improvement of the symptoms.

Be careful not to overcook or burn the chocolate. Cool slightly. Meanwhile, whip egg whites in a large bowl to soft peaks. Gradually beat in ½ cup powdered sugar. Continue to beat until mixture resembles soft marshmallow cream. Whisk cocoa and cornstarch in a medium bowl to blend. On low speed, mix dry ingredients into egg white mixture. Add melted chocolate, maple syrup and remaining chocolate chips. Form dough into 1-inch rounded balls, and roll in remaining powdered sugar. Arrange on prepared baking sheets, spacing about 2 inches apart. Bake until puffed and tops cracked, about 10 minutes. After removing from oven, place baking sheets on racks to cool for about 10 minutes. Carefully remove from sheets and cool completely on racks.

Knowledge
Are You Using it,
Or is it using you?
by don Miguel Ruiz, Jr.
began my apprenticeship into my family’s tradition in San Diego, California, when I was fourteen years old. My seventy-nine-year-old grandmother, Madre Sarita, was my teacher and the spiritual head of our family. She was a curandera, a faith healer who helped people in her small temple in Barrio Logan, a neighborhood in San Diego, with the power of her faith in God and love. Since my father was a medical doctor, the juxtaposition of the two forms of healing allowed me to see our tradition through different points of view.
I
Translating the Message
Though she spoke no English, my grandmother gave sermons and lectures across the country. My apprenticeship began with translating my grandmother’s lectures from Spanish to English. For many years, I awkwardly stumbled over her words, and my grandmother would just look at me and laugh. One day, she asked me if I knew why I stumbled. I had all sorts of answers: you are speaking too quickly, you don’t give me a chance to catch up, some words don’t have a direct translation. . .She just looked at me silently for a few moments and then asked, “Are you using knowledge, or is knowledge using you?”
Learning to Listen
I looked at her blankly. She continued, “When you translate, you try to express my words through what you already know, what you think is true. You do not hear me; you hear yourself. Imagine doing the same thing every single moment in life. If you are looking through life and translating it as it goes along, you will miss out on living it. But if you learn to listen to life, you will always be able to express the words as they come. Your knowledge has to become a tool that you use to guide you through life but that can also be put aside. Do not let knowledge translate everything you experience.”

I nodded in response, but it didn’t dawn on me until many years later what my grandmother was truly talking about. Throughout life, we constantly narrate, or commentate on, everything we do, say, see, touch, smell, taste, and hear. As natural storytellers, we continuously keep the plot moving forward, sometimes missing millions of subplots that are developing on their own. It is like taking a sip of wine and saying, “It’s a bit dry; it has definitely aged well, but I can taste the bark. I’ve had better.” Instead of simply experiencing the joy and flavors of the wine, we are analyzing the flavor, trying to break it down and fit it into a context and language we already know. In doing this, we miss out on much of the actual experience.
Seeing Beyond Our Filters
This is a simple example of how we narrate life—explaining it, but, more importantly, justifying and judging it. Instead of taking an experience for what it is, we create a story to make it fit our beliefs. During Madre Sarita’s talks, I had to completely shut down my thoughts, because if my mind’s commentary got in the way, I would miss out on her message. With this simple process, my grandmother showed me that if we only see the world through the filters of our preconceptions, we are going to miss out on actually living. After much practice, I eventually learned to close my eyes, shut out the world that existed outside my head, and translate every single word she said accurately. Seeing beyond our filters—our accumulated knowledge and beliefs—does not always come naturally. We have spent years growing attached to them in various degrees, and they feel safe. Whatever we become attached to can begin to shape our future experiences and limit our perception of what exists outside our vocabulary. Like blinders on a horse, our attached beliefs limit our vision, and this in turn limits our perceived direction in life. The stronger our level of attachment, the less we can see. Hearing Your Own Melody
Think about your set of attached beliefs as a unique melody repeating itself in your mind. In a way, we are constantly trying to force our melody—the one we have become accustomed to hearing—onto other melodies, without realizing that often the melody is not our own, and perhaps it’s not even the one we want to be playing. If we continue playing only what we know, never opening ourselves to listen to the other songs flowing around us, we are letting our attachment to our particular melody control us. Instead, choose to listen to other melodies playing. Perhaps you will contribute to them, adding a harmony or a bass line and just seeing where the music takes you. By letting go of your attachment to what you think the melody should be, you open yourself to the potential to create a unique and beautiful song of your own composition or a collaboration that can be shared with others. *Excerpted from The Five Levels of Attachment: Toltec Wisdom for a Modern World by don Miguel Ruiz, Jr. © 2013 Hierophant Publishing, distributed by Red Wheel/Weiser. A Wise Woman's Way Herbs ‘n Such, by Mimi Tagher
appy Mother’s Day! As women we have much to celebrate. We are sensitive, intuitive and receptive to the flow of life. We are connected to the cycles of nature and blessed with the capability of bringing forth life. Over the course of our lives, our health can be complex, as multiple hormones interact with one another. Herbs and supplements can help ensure these hormones remain balanced, and that the environment is right for our processes, cycles and changes to occur in a way that is supportive and appropriate to each particular stage of life. The use of the herbs below, and many more, can be supportive to women in all phases of life. Chaste Tree/Vitex Chaste Tree (Vitex agnus castus) is highly esteemed the world over as a supreme female tonic. It exerts a powerful influence over the endocrine system and is especially nourishing to the pituitary gland, which controls and coordinates the menstrual cycle. The berries are rich in phytosterols and help balance hormones by promoting the production of progesterone and normalizing the estrogen cycle. Vitex is especially useful for women with short menstrual cycles, trouble conceiving, cramping and PMS. Black Cohosh Black Cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa) is the most commonly prescribed herb for menopause. It is helpful for managing hot flashes, fatigue and irritability often associated with this change in life. It also has a mild mood-lifting effect. Red Clover Red clover (Trifolium pratense) is the most concentrated source of phytoestrogens, substances in a plant that look like the body’s hormone, estrogen. This can be helpful during menopause, when estrogen levels tend to be low. Red clover can help with hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness. It combines very well with Black Cohosh. Shatavari Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) is translated as “the plant for the woman with 1,000 husbands.” In India, most women incorporate the plant into their health regime. It has a balancing effect on women’s hormones and helps support energy levels and a healthy sex drive. It can support fertility and also soothe damaged vaginal tissue. The plant is traditionally consumed before bedtime as a powder mixed into warm milk.

Holy Basil Holy basil (Ocimum sanctum), also called tulsi, has fantastic stress-managing properties. It can help lower the levels of stress hormones like cortisol. It is very calming and grounding, and can help with mental clarity. It is especially useful for mothers who are multitasking and under a lot of stress. Holy basil makes a wonderful tea and can also be taken as a tincture or capsule. Angelica/Dong gui In China, dong gui is known as a supreme female tonic. It is nourishing, restorative and revitalizing. For thousands of years, healers around the world have used this herb to regulate menstruation, relieve cramping and menopausal distress, promote healthy blood circulation, balance hormones, and generally ease the journey through the childbearing and menopausal years. Lady’s Mantle Lady’s mantle (Alchemilla vulgaris) is a superb uterine tonic. It has a strengthening effect on the female reproductive system, helps regulate menstruation and controls menstrual flooding. Its content of salicylic acid and other sedating properties make it effective at alleviating menstrual cramping or uterine discomfort. It can also be helpful to shrink fibroids. Lady’s mantle is invaluable when dealing with lumpy breast tissue, achy breasts, easing tension and relieving breast discomfort. The leaves and flowers can be used externally as a poultice. External application of lady’s mantle can also help improve the tone and firmness of breast tissue. Motherwort Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) has a host of special benefits for females from puberty to old age. It helps soothe the nervous irritability associated with PMS. It is an excellent tonic for the uterus and reproductive organs. It can help relieve menstrual cramping, and bring on menstruation when late. For menopausal women, motherwort balances hormones, moderate mood swings, ease hot flashes, depression and heart palpitations. It’s a gentle heart tonic, strengthening to the heart and circulatory system. who are you? by Caroline Myss
f I said to you, “See that man over there? He’s my Hero,” or “That woman is the Perfect Mom,” I know without a doubt that you would understand exactly what I was communicating to you about two people you had never met. With just three words—Hero and Perfect Mom—I would have awakened in you two complete archives of myths and symbols that you automatically associate with those terms. In seconds, these two people would cease to be strangers, as your psyche wrapped them in stories, fairy tales, and your own memories. The man would instantly take on the appearance of a super-strong Hero able to face any adversary. Despite knowing nothing else about him, you would instantly trust him. The words Perfect Mom pack a powerful punch, especially in our society. The instant someone tells you that a woman is a Perfect Mom, you immediately picture a great cook with a charming, wellordered home, who helps her kids with their homework, attends all their sporting events, listens to their problems, hosts sleepovers with their friends—and bakes brownies. So how do those words—Hero and Perfect Mom—communicate so much visual, emotional, intellectual, and mythic information to us? They carry the power they do because they are archetypes, psychic power patterns in the unconscious

mind. Archetypes are the power images we identify with as children. We are drawn to movies, books, and video games with characters that represent our power images. Little girls dress up as Princesses and Wonder Woman, little boys as Batman and Warriors. Archetypal identification begins early.
10 Power Trends
The ten archetypal patterns that reflect the power trends of our times are: the Advocate, the Artist/Creative, the Athlete, the Caregiver, the Fashionista, the Intellectual, the Queen/Executive, the Rebel, the Spiritual Seeker, and the Visionary. They all embody the primary power issues that define women today, including their underlying struggles with personal empowerment. In addition to reflecting contemporary power themes, the ten archetypes embody the more pressing personal challenges facing women today. Women in particular face the challenge of developing an inner sense of power and personal identity. Without that essential core of self-esteem, you will be unable to hear your intuitive guidance.
Influence in Every Day Life
Archetypal patterns filter into every aspect of your life. Your archetypes influence your spending habits, how you shop, and what you buy or not. They influence the quality of your relationships, and who you are attracted to and why. And they influence recurring issues: arguments you seem to have over and over, difficulties at work that keep cropping up, and other patterns that repeat themselves. The more

you know about how archetypes work, the more easily you can observe their influence on your thoughts, your attitudes, your behavior, and your personal myths and symbols.
A Bridge to Your True Self
Once you connect with an archetype that you know is genuinely you, it will inspire you to find out about other archetypes that may be influencing your life. Connecting with an archetype is a bridge to your true Self, to who you really are. You are an infinitely complex human being with stories and myths and dreams—and ambitions of cosmic proportions. Don’t waste time underestimating yourself. Dream big. Use your archetypes. If you’re an Artist, make art. If you’re a Visionary, imagine something the future needs, then join forces with an Entrepreneur to make a venture out of it. Use the energy of your archetype to express the true reason you were born. Life was never meant to be safe. It was meant to be lived right to the end. There are inner riches awaiting you in the archetypal domain. Life is an archetypal magic carpet ride through endless adventures meant to teach us about the hidden truths of life and our place in the cosmic scheme. Tara L. Robinson will interview Caroline Myss on Tuesday, June 18th, 3-3:45pm, on Waves of a New Age at WAIF 88.3FM or www.waif883.org. This excerpt is taken from the book Archetypes by Caroline Myss, published by Hay House and available at all bookstores or online at www.hayhouse.com. The Five Levels of Attachment by don Miguel Ruiz, Jr. (Hierophant Publishing, 2013)
Ad Proof Other Services Include:
Don Miguel Ruiz, Jr. is the son of don Miguel Ruiz, author of the bestselling book, The Four Agreements. In his first book, The Five Levels of Attachment, Ruiz, Jr. draws on the Toltec wisdom he learned from his father and grandmother and explores how our attachments create our reality. He explains how our beliefs become intimately connected to our identity, or who we think we are. He also illustrates how we often create our identities based on the opinions and judgments of others. Summer Solstice Intuitive Insights, by Francine Haydon and Patricia Garry
n 2013, the summer solstice begins at 1:04 a.m. (EDT) on June 21st in the Northern Hemisphere. It is the first day of summer, the time of year when the Sun reaches its farthest point north of the equator. The summer solstice is the longest day and shortest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. The word solstice comes from the Latin word “sol” which means “sun” and “stice” which means to “stand still.” Literally, it is the time when the Sun seems to stand still in the sky. In Celtic and Slavic cultures, the first day of summer, also known as St. John’s Day or Litha, was celebrated with dancing and the lighting of huge bonfires which were used to herald in the sun’s energy to help the crops grow and families to flourish in the coming months. Young couples would jump high over the bonfires in the belief that their crops would grow as high as they were able to jump. The Druids honored summer solstice as the “wedding of Heaven and Earth.” Today, June is still thought to be a time of good luck for weddings. It is a time of celebration.
I
Serpent Mound
Locally, we are privileged to have a very sacred place where we can go to celebrate the summer solstice – Serpent Mound in Adams County, Ohio. The Friends of Serpent Mound hold an annual festival there on the first day of summer because the setting sun perfectly aligns with the huge, snake-like effigy, earthen mound. This ancient site was built using sacred geometry, astronomical alignments, ley lines and the spiritual wisdom of the people – thought to be of the Adena or Hopewell era. Local author, Ross Hamilton, wrote an excellent book on The Mystery of Serpent Mound detailing all of the astronomical and mathematical calculations required to execute such a precise instrument. So how can you use this sacred time for your own benefit? What energy can the solstice bring to your own precious life?
Celebrating the Solstice Today
In ancient times, this day was called Mid-Summer, since summer then started on May 1. It is an expansive time, a time of fulfillment and achievement. Starting on May 1, and building to the solstice, create and use affirmations and meditations that claim increase in all areas of your life. Affirmations like: “I have an abundance of time, money, energy, support, love and fun in my life.” “My self-confidence increases every day.” “My life is full of joy and peace.” “The process of life is always working in my favor.” Meditate, even if only for 5 minutes, while sitting or walking or ironing, and picture what life will look like when you have everything you believe you need. Dwell on those beautiful pictures of each member of your family being happy; imagine yourself sitting in the corner office at work after receiving that promotion; or visualize what activities you will do when your current physical problem isn’t a problem any longer. Live as much as possible in that space where you feel peaceful and filled with abundance. Bring those feelings back throughout the day. And you will be well on your way to celebrating the summer solstice this year. BREATHE MORE LIFE INTO YOUR BODY noring and sleep apnea lead to low oxygen levels in the body. In turn, this leads to physical problems people don’t usually associate with sleep issues. They affect your life at home, on the job, and your relationships. Dr. Bosma helps patients who snore through a unique system of evaluation and treatment called Oral Systemic Balance. Breathe more life into your body! Call us for information or to schedule your sleep evaluation.
