MUM GOES TO ANTARCTICA

Author: Anna Cabré Albós | Mariona Tolosa Sisteré From the reader report by: Suky Taylor

This unusual book springs from the author’s visit (she’s a climate scientist) to Antarctica as part of the Homeward Bound global leadership programme. While that sounds dry, interest is added to the story by the fact that she went with 99 other women. Antarctica is notorious for its maledominated milieus (bases, labs etc), a reflection of the fact science has “colonized” the site for more than a century on behalf of a handful of (mainly powerful north hemisphere) nations – and that this process was led by men, mainly for male scientists and military personnel.

Author’s biography: Anna Cabré lives between Barcelona and Germany. She was selected to take part in a one-year program to improve leadership for women scientists and encourage them to get involved in political decisions on climate change. As a result of this experience, she wrote Mum goes to Antarctica for her children and the children of the world. In this book she reimagines the expedition to Antarctica and describes how the penguins, whales and icebergs ask her for help because their world of ice is falling apart. Mariona Tolosa lives in Barcelona and illustration is her work and her passion. Her work explores how we feel, what we learn, our fears, what makes us happy and what makes us excited. She likes to create collages using paper, coloured pencils and aniline dye.

Synopsis: This book chronicles the Homeward Bound expedition to Antarctica, in which 100 women travelled to the South Pole to fight for a more sustainable planet and demand more female leadership in conversations about our relationship with our planet. Anna Cabré is a climate physicist with a doctorate in cosmology and one of the Spanish women who travelled to Antarctica to study the effects of climate change with the Homeward Bound expedition. But she is also a mother who felt the need to explain to her two children what she does when she is not at home: aboard an orange boat, she helps icebergs, whales and seals save the South Pole.
