Foreword by President Jacob Zuma

N

ot only has the annual Cape Town International Jazz Festival become an indelible feature of the Mother City each year since 1999, it has also continued to grow in leaps and bounds—playing host to music lovers and tourists from all corners of the world. The popularity of the festival among South Africans is also beyond question, witnessed in the ever growing number of young and old citizens who descend on the Cape Peninsula during this time. The 16th Cape Town International Jazz Festival is no different, rivalled only by the growth in both stature and the number of activities in different venues across the city, such as training workshops to develop musical and production skills. I especially appreciate the skills development value of the festival, in addition to the proven capacity of our arts and culture to bring together our diverse people. On behalf of the government and the population of South Africa, I would like to express our sincere appreciation to all festival goers this year for supporting the country’s arts and culture. As always, we hope you will enjoy the festival and your stay in the beautiful city of Cape Town and South Africa as a whole. We wish all revellers a warm and exciting jazz experience.

Message from the Minister of Arts & Culture, Mr Nathi Mthethwa

T

he Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF) takes place as our democracy turns 21 years, and thus enters an age of maturity on Freedom Day in April. For almost two decades, we have witnessed and experienced how jazz has crossed and thus destroyed the man-made barriers that are the legacy of colonialism of a special type through spatial divisions. This development is a giant stride into the future where jazz opens access to the best that this country has to offer. It is a milestone. We are at that point where the citizens of this country have a right to ask: What have we achieved through supporting and promoting a jazz festival for the last 16 years? We have ploughed millions of rands for the next three years to use this creative industry to bring together people from diverse background and countries. We have done that to create an enabling environment for all people to experience a sense of belonging, and witness the talent and artistry of our musical maestros playing alongside their international counterparts. Above all, we have done this to stimulate the creative sector as business enterprises that provide opportunities to our artists and small business to create employment, income and a measure of economic self-reliance. Ultimately, it is to show that the arts do contribute to the country’s economic growth and development—this is not entertainment for its own sake. I am proud to say that our Mzansi Golden Economy strategy—where the arts create jobs and sustainable business that contribute to the economy—is beginning to pay off. We are creating the creative arts incubators to provide artists with tools to write original material and have facilities to record them. As a further step toward the growth of this sector as a business enterprise, we will have to invest through a venture capital fund which is in development. This will ensure our artists are creative entrepreneurs who are economically independent while being catalysts for empowering other emerging artists in the process. It is encouraging and gives me great pride to see that the CTIJF is the biggest jazz festival in Africa and increasingly making its mark on the global map. It attracts artists and aficionados from all over the world. We congratulate the organising team—especially its retired founder Rashid Lombard, for his role and contribution. We salute all the musicians from home and all over the world who have been the cement for laying a solid foundation for the free and democratic society we are building. There is reason to celebrate that jazz is an essential part of the unfolding story of South Africa’s nation-building initiative. Through this cultural enterprise, jazz is part of the engine power moving the country forward.

Welcome Note from the Mayor

I

would like to wish all the visitors and artists who have come to the Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF), from near and far, a very warm welcome to our city. When we envisioned building an inclusive city, our vision wasn’t limited to just having diverse people coming together. Instead, we wanted to be part of building a shared heritage in the City of Cape Town. The CTIJF has become a cornerstone of that shared heritage. Every year, we see the people of Cape Town, South Africa and indeed the world come together to celebrate one of the most significant events on the Mother City’s entertainment calendar. This world-renowned festival gives us the opportunity to transcend our differences and celebrate our shared love of music. It brings us together to create the kind of future we want for Cape Town—one of united communities. The CTIJF not only brings the best international talent to our shores; it also provides an invaluable platform for our home-grown artists. Our local talent is world-class, and we take great pride in supporting an event that showcases them to the world. To all the visitors, and in particular the artists who will be performing this year, I am confident that you will enjoy your stay with us as much as we enjoy having you here. We look forward to welcoming you back next year!

A word of thanks A

s the acting CEO of espAfrika, a subsidiary of Sekunjalo Investments Limited, it is a pleasure to be able to announce that once again the company has, among other considerable achievements, outdone itself with the staging of the 16th Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF). This no small measure is thanks to the team of highly experienced professionals who deliver this world-class event to the many thousands of festinos each year. It is also due to the exceptional level of support this festival receives from the government and corporate South Africa, through sponsorship and value-add; the media, both local and international; and the extraordinary service providers who all contribute to keeping the CTIJF recognised as a leading event on the African continent and beyond. The high esteem with which this event is held and the importance of its commercial success has been evidenced in the number and quality of long-term contracts and sponsorships that have been confirmed recently. This shows a significant vote of confidence in the company and its management team from our sponsors and supporters. They herald the dawning of an even brighter future for a lifestyle product that continues to grow from strength to strength. Some of our partners have been with the festival for many years, and some are very new to the fold. The common denominator here is the value this event continues to deliver—as an experience, promotion, return on investment, hospitality tool, and as a contributor to sustainable livelihoods for local service providers as well as small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs). The positive impact is also seen through its contribution to the fiscal of local and national treasuries: some R522 million in provincial gross domestic product (GDP) and over R900 million GDP at national level. A great deal of the money generated by the CTIJF goes toward job creation, SMMEs and employment opportunities, as a result of the well-documented training and development programmes that the festival continues to provide. With its proven business credentials, the company is able to create value for all stakeholders and create in excess of 2 700 jobs before, during and after the festival, as well as throughout the year. With the future growth of espAfrika already developing, I foresee the number of business and event management opportunities growing significantly. This will then afford this truly local business the ability to remain true to its commitment to developing the music and arts industry, and create jobs for generations to come. For that, we thank you all.

A Message from the Festival Director

T

here is an adage that says: “It takes a village to raise a child.” In the context of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF), I would like to acknowledge that it has taken a dedicated team to make this festival Africa’s Grandest Gathering, and especially one that has risen to a world-class standard that continues to draw crowds from all over the globe. And what a team it is. One that is diligent, hardworking, creative and passionate about delivering exceptional experiences that fans look forward to each year. This team is also 90% female—women who have nurtured and brought this event to fruition. They all have their eye firmly on shaping ‘the Festival’ for years to come, with plans already in place to accommodate more visitors, particularly with the venue expanding shortly. Not only this, but the dedication and passion with which the entire company devotes to ensuring our training and development programmes generate new careers, is to be commended. I am therefore happy to announce that we will be prolonging these programmes throughout the year so that we can continue to extend the success rate and positively influence more people. I am extremely proud to lead this dynamic family and would like to dedicate the 2015 Africa’s Grandest Gathering to every single member at espAfrika who has helped grow this child into the 16-year-old young adult it has become. As this is indeed our ‘Sweet Sixteen’, we realised this was also the perfect opportunity to take that first step on a journey into a new direction and focus on celebrating our home-grown talent and pay homage to our musical heroes. There is no doubt South Africa has a wealth of musical ability, and the CTIJF is perhaps one of the biggest platforms that can afford emerging artists a stage to showcase themselves—as they will be. These are new stories that need telling. Some of these overlay the narrative of stars such as Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse and The Mahotella Queens who celebrate 50 years in the industry and will be the first South African artists to close Friday night’s show. Many offer a new perspective that resonates with younger ‘festinos’ and we therefore acknowledge our past while laying the foundation for the future. We wouldn’t be an international festival that has evolved into a lifestyle statement if it were not for the abundance of talent who visit from foreign shores and share their musical genius. Because music matters, we salute each and every one of you and we are delighted to welcome you to the 16th Cape Town International Jazz Festival.

even-time Grammy winner Al Jarreau is a verifiable legend. His unique vocal styles and innovative musical expressions have earned him international accolades and a fan base that began back when he was four years old. Moving to San Francisco to work as a rehabilitation counsellor, he began singing at a small jazz club in a trio with keyboard pioneer George Duke (who passed away in 2014 and for whom Jarreau has done a tribute album). The call to music was so strong that he moved to LA and then to New York City, catching the attention of the national television networks and signing to Warner Bros. Jarreau’s breakthrough came in 1975 with his launch album We Got By, which earned him notice and acclaim at home and abroad, even winning a German Grammy—and another for his next album, Glow. He has gone on to climb to even greater heights since, with a combination of jazz, R&B and pop hits. He is also well known for his scat singing (vocal improvisation), imitating guitar, bass and percussion sounds. One of Jarreau’s most successful albums was Breakin’ Away, with the hit song, “We’re In This Love Together”, winning him one of his seven Grammy awards. He also performed a number of songs on movie soundtracks, earning a Grammy nomination for writing and performing the theme song to the popular 1980s American television show, Moonlighting.

rammy-nominated Amel Larrieux is an American singer-songwriter and keyboardist who rose to fame in the mid-1990s as a founding member of the duo Groove Theory, along with Bryce Wilson. In 2000, she released her debut album Infinite Possibilities on Epic Records, which she co-wrote and co-produced. The record is a fusion of R&B, soul, hip hop, jazz and folk, with the occasional inclusion of Middle Eastern, West African and Indian styles—and produced the hit “Get Up”, her highest charting solo hit to date. In late 2003, Larrieux and her husband-producer Laru founded the independent label, Blisslife Records, on which she has released five albums to date. Her collaboration with Stanley Clarke and Glenn Lewis on the cover version of Roberta Flack’s “Where Is The Love” received a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals in 2003. Larrieux has also contributed to film soundtracks, writing and singing in such movies as Barbershop, Love Jones, Down To Earth, Sunset Park, Takers and Why Did I Get Married?. She cites Ella Fitzgerald, Prince, Sade, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix and Joni Mitchell among others as her musical influences. She has often described her music as “Amel’s music”—Amel meaning ‘hope’ in Arabic. Larrieux’s latest offering, Ice Cream Everyday, came after a six-year hiatus and has been described as her greatest artistic achievement since her debut solo album. Not only is she a talented songbird, but her beauty and style have also put her in the spotlight in a number of top fashion magazines such as Essence, Honey and Marie Claire, as well as in a media advertising campaign for Coca-Cola.

ndrea Motis is considered a revelation in Catalan jazz. Now 19 years old, she has been dazzling audiences with her angelic voice. The Guardian describes it as “the kind of pearly, barely exhaled voice—paced with canny improv swerves and casual timing—from which jazz celebs are made.” Some of her videos have over 200 000 plays on YouTube. Not only does this young artist sing with a personality that hasn’t been seen in years, but she also plays the saxophone and trumpet with poise and professionalism belying her years. Motis’s first album Feeling Good was released with her mentor Joan Chamorro at the age of 16. A veteran of Catalan jazz, Chamorro is doing exceptional work with the Sant Andreu Jazz Band, the youngest big band in Europe which produced the talented Motis. His career as a saxophonist and bassist (among other instruments) is as illustrious as it is extensive, having worked with Tete Montoliu, Slide Hampton, Bebo Valdés, Randy Brecker, The Manhattan Transfer and Stevie Wonder, among many others. “F

ull of joy”, “breathtaking”, “brilliant and animated”—these are just a few of the words that have been used to describe this Swiss– South African jazz collaboration between bassist Bänz Oester and his Rainmakers: Ganesh Geymeier, Afrika Mkhize and Ayanda Sikade. The Swiss pair of Oester and Geymeier met the two South Africans at the 2011 National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, and decided then and there to collaborate on a more regular basis. Their camaraderie and shared musical philosophy have since blossomed with a series of successful concerts around the world and the release of the album Playing at The Bird’s Eye, recorded live in 2012 at the jazz club in Basel. Merging their varying backgrounds and traditions, the band’s simple style incorporates seductive and funky blues, African rhythms and Swiss folk tunes, with energetic improvisation. Bandleader Oester has made a name for himself in the Swiss jazz scene since the 1980s, and has now gained prominence internationally on his own and as part of various groups. Aside from The Rainmakers, he also plays with the WHO Trio including Gerry Hemingway and Michel Wintsch; in duo with vocalist Andreas Schaerer; and as sideman with the Donat Fisch and Marcus Wyatt quartets. He has also worked as a producer for the likes of Themba Mkhize (his father), Sibongile Khumalo and Kabelo, and for years served as musical director for the late Miriam Makeba. Sikade, a talented drummer, has worked with such luminaries as Feya Faku, Bheki Mseleku, Robbie Jansen, Barney Rachabane, Darius Brubeck and the late Zim Ngqawana. Geymeier, on tenor saxophone, is one of the most popular Swiss sax players of the young generation. He plays with numerous Swiss and French musicians—including the group, Holunderblüten. Having completed two Swiss tours in 2012 and 2014 and their first South African tour in June last year, the group is taking their music to other European audiences in Autumn 2015. Watch out: they are sure to ‘make it rain’ at this year’s Cape Town International Jazz Festival!

ative of Poland and a British citizen for most of her life, Basia Trzetrzelewska spent a number of years with the pop group, Matt Bianco, with lead singer Mark Reilly and composer Danny White. In 1986, she and White left to begin work on their debut album, Time and Tide. The album, with its cocktail jazz-pop sound, was successful throughout Europe, Japan and later the United States, and delivered such hits as “New Day For You”. Basia’s versatility has earned her two consecutive number-one Billboard Contemporary Jazz albums with the single “Cruising For Bruising” from the second album, London Warsaw New York. In 1994, she developed a more organic sound, with a full band and a deeper variety of musical texture. After a successful world tour, she had a two-week run on Broadway which was recorded for the 1995 live album, Basia on Broadway. The deaths of Basia’s mother and several of her close friends led to a hiatus of almost 15 years, whereafter she rejoined White and Reilly in a reunited Matt Bianco. But with White’s assistance once more, she relaunched her solo career with the 2009 album, It’s That Girl Again. The critically acclaimed effort was a commercial success and placed in the top 10 of the US jazz albums chart. Last year, Basia was presented with one of Poland’s highest orders—the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta— for outstanding achievement in promoting Polish culture in the world. Currently, she and White are working on a new album, which they hope to release in 2015.

eatenberg is a fresh new face in South African pop music, but drawing inspiration from jazz, classical music and world music from South America and the African continent. Songwriter Matthew Field says their beat “is about emotions, images and fleeting senses of things: the mad stuff that everyone feels and almost understands.” Blending synth elements with ‘Africanesque’ guitar lines and stark, haunting vocals, the band is creating and defining a ‘new South African sound’ that pays homage to the country’s musical heritage while breaking new ground with their unmistakably global pop sensibility. Having played together since 2008, Field, Ross Dorkin and Robin Brink released their first album Farm Photos independently in 2009, making a lasting impression with their sophisticated harmony, sincere delivery and boyish lyrics. In 2012, Beatenberg opened for The Tallest Man On Earth. They also played the Rocking the Daisies Festival in 2012, as well as Sowing The Seeds and Oppikoppi in 2013. After getting everyone in the country asking: “Who is Chelsea Blakemore?”, Beatenberg broke a number of records with their collaboration with DJ Clock on their next hit single, “Pluto (Remember You)”— spending 17 weeks at #1, which is the most time in the history of South African radio, and becoming the most played local song. Their latest album The Hanging Gardens of Beatenberg has earned them four 2015 MetroFM Music Award nominations: Best African Pop Album, Best Duo/Group Album, as well as Song of the Year and Best Hit Single for “Rafael”.

ast Aire and Vordul Mega make up the dynamic underground hip hop duo, Cannibal Ox (or ‘Can Ox’ to loyal followers), from Harlem. After getting together in 1998, they released their first album The Cold Vein in 2001—still one of the seminal works of the New York hip hop scene. Their highly anticipated second studio album Blade of the Ronin (the first in 14 years), which promises insightful lyricism and poignant production, was released in early March this year—just in time for the Cape Town International Jazz Festival. Contributors include MF (Metal Face) DOOM, the Wu-Tang Clan’s U-God, The Artifacts and Elzhi. In between their two CDs, they have released a number of singles, compilations and a live album. Since the cult success of The Cold Vein, Cannibal Ox has largely remained off the public’s radar, preferring their underground lair. In 2013 they re-emerged, releasing the maxi-single “Gotham” with relatively unknown producer, Bill Cosmiq. The sound reveals that they more than ‘still have it’. As SPIN webzine noted, “While it doesn’t sound like a day has passed since Vein, Vast and Vordul were always spitting from the future.” Which will no doubt have the Mother City jumping.

outh African bassist/composer Carlo Mombelli started his professional playing career in the band of one of South Africa’s most important jazz guitarists, the late Johnny Fourie. In 1985, Mombelli started the group Abstractions, developing and performing his original compositions in downtown Johannesburg clubs such as Jameson’s and Kippies, as well as a weekly midnight solo bass set at the Black Sun in Berea. He has since recorded and performed at many festivals around the world. Back home, he can be heard as a bassist on many South African recordings with, among others, Tlale Makhene, Zim Ngqawana, Marcus Wyatt, Simphiwe Dana, Sibongile Khumalo and the late Miriam Makeba. Besides the many ballets that have been choreographed to his music, Mombelli has also recorded several CDs and DVDs of his own works and has been nominated three times for a South African Music Award. He has given composition and performance workshops around the world—from the Richard

Strauss Conservatory in Munich, Germany to the Berklee College of Music in Boston, United States. His book, Mombelli’s Intergalactic Bass Programme Vol. 1, was published in 2011. Stories is his latest offering with The Storytellers, recorded in 2013 in Switzerland: a personal

O

ne of South Africa’s most sought-after drummers on the jazz scene, Claude Cozens is known for his distinctive, open-style percussive technique. He is also a talented pianist, composer and drum tutor, and leads his own trio with Kyle Shepherd and Benjamin Jephta. Cozens’ compelling energy and inventiveness has seen him perform with a wide array of artists locally and abroad—including Bokani Dyer (Mirrors), Jimmy Dludlu, Hilton Schilder, Mark Fransman and Darren English. He also collaborated on Shepherd’s album fineART, and Insurrections with Indian and South African artists. During his professional career, Cozens has performed at numerous top venues and festivals in South Africa and abroad, including: the National Arts Festival, the Edge of Wrong Festival, Pan African Space Station, and the Nasjonal Jazzscene and at Kulturhus Trondheim in Norway. In 2014, he released his debut album Jubilee Jam: a studio recording of his trio—with Shepherd on keyboard and synthesisers and Jephta on bass— and all original tracks composed by Cozens himself. He and Shepherd designed and built what is believed to be the world’s first complete ghoema drum kit, which was launched in 2013 at the world premiere of Shepherd’s Xamissa (a socio-historical sound-sketch of their hometown Cape Town) at the Festival d’Automne à Paris. Cozens’ music reflects the rich and diverse sounds and rhythms of Cape Town, the African continent and jazz, and there is a distinct spirituality he conveys in his compositions.

Adept at the flute, clarinet, bass clarinet as well as keyboards, his music blends modern British music with contemporary jazz styles. His debut album Journey to the Urge Within caught the public’s attention and earned him a UK top 10 smash hit, “Children of the Ghetto”. The 2010 record Transition in Tradition (En Hommage á Sidney Bechet) showcased his talents on the bass clarinet with reinventions of classic New Orleans music, and paid tribute to jazz pioneer, Sidney Bechet. His musical journey began when he fortuitously met the group Malaika in 2000, and asked if he could sing for them. They were so impressed that Donald began touring with them. In 2010, he signed a deal with DJ Cleo to launch his solo career, also compiling a number of songs for the award-winning show, Rhythm City. A year later, Donald formed his own record company where he continues to release great music. His latest album Black & White, released in 2014, debuted at #3 on the iTunes chart. It features duets with Grammy-nominated singer Kenny Latimore as well as Bucie and Big Nuz. The somewhat personal lyrical content is a “combination of all factors that relate to relationships”, he says. In 2013, Donald was nominated for a BET Award for Best International Act: Africa. In the same year, he won two Metro FM Music Awards: for Best Produced Album for Train of Love and Best Styled Artist (which he won again in 2015).

hree-time Grammy nominated jazz artist Gerald Clayton has been hailed by The New York Times for his “huge, authoritative presence”. Three albums over the course of eight years, and countless worldwide performances, this pianist and composer has established himself as a leading figure in the up-and-coming generation of jazz artists who are fluent in the range of styles that make up today’s jazz lexicon. He is the son of acclaimed jazz bassist, composer and bandleader, John Clayton, who has supported and encouraged him since he first showed signs—at age three—of musical talent which, in 2006, led to a second-place prize in the prestigious Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz Piano Competition. Around that time, Clayton was introduced to trumpeter Roy Hargrove when they were both featured artists at a performance of Henry Mancini & His Orchestra. From 2006 to 2008, he toured extensively with Hargrove in his

quintet, big band and funk group before breaking out on his own with the Gerald Clayton Trio featuring Joe Sanders and Justin Brown. Gerald is also a member of his father’s Clayton Brothers Quintet (along with his uncle, renowned saxophonist Jeff Clayton), and performs not only duos with his dad but also ‘Father, Son and Godfather’ concerts with longtime family friend, drummer Jeff Hamilton. Life Forum was released in 2013—his most ambitious project to date, featuring an all-star ensemble including such artists as trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire and vocalist Gretchen Parlato. Clayton does not want to be defined by any one musical tradition. “I prefer to ignore the boxes, the genre distinctions,” he says. ”I focus on creating honest musical expressions and collaborating with people whose ideas resonate with my own.”

ugh Masekela and Oliver Mtukudzi, two giants of African music, will join forces on stage for a rare collaboration that will see them perform and reinterpret some of their best-known songs. These long-time friends are bonded by their passion for heritage restoration in Africa and their love for traditional southern African music. They performed together for the first time in September 2014 at the Soweto Theatre as part of the Hugh Masekela Inaugural Lecture. In his teens, Masekela was inspired by jazz greats such as Dizzy Gillespie, George Shearing, Miles Davis, Clifford Brown, John Coltrane and Art Blakey. At the end of 1959, together with Dollar Brand (later Abdullah Ibrahim), Kippie Moeketsi, Jonas Gwangwa, Makhaya Ntshoko and Johnny Gertze, Hugh formed the Jazz Epistles—the first African jazz group to record an LP and perform to record-breaking audiences in Johannesburg and Cape Town through late 1959 to early 1960. Masekela also recorded extensively with another legend, Miriam Makeba, whom he wed in 1964 (and divorced two years later). Today, he maintains a very active tour schedule, and his distinctive voice and flugelhorn can be heard on many other artists’ recordings. Zimbabwean-born Mtukudzi, fondly known as “Tuku”, began

performing in 1977 when he joined Wagon Wheels. He and a few band members later created their own group, Black Spirits, with whom he has performed through most of his career. His husky voice and elements of different musical traditions have led to a distinctive style known to fans as ‘Tuku Music’, which has helped nearly all his albums become best-sellers. He has shared his unique talents with audiences in southern Africa as well as the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada. Mtukudzi was featured in the cover story of the April 2003 TIME Magazine Africa edition, titled: “The People’s Voice”; he was the first African musician ever to appear on the front cover of the magazine. Bra Hugh and Bra Oliver are a unique African combination with the moves to prove it. Don’t miss out on this dynamic combination of Uptownship Pop ‘n’ Roll and Tuku Music.

Having been in existence for well over 30 years, it boasts a track record of investing in research and development work that has led to successfully commercialising South Africa’s first biosimilar product, Repotin, a recombinant human hormone known as erythropoietin. Now rebranded as Genius, the group of companies runs the following business operations: • Manufacture and sale of Repotin • Development work in dendritic cell vaccine technology(immunotherapy) • Further developmental activities for granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) technology • Production of protein-based reagents Genius has been given approval by the South African Reserve Bank to list abroad, which will have a significant impact on the economy. Genius operates a production facility based in Centurion for the production of Repotin. The product is used for treating anaemia in patients, caused mainly as a result of kidney disease. Repotin acts by increasing the production of red blood cells, which helps to improve the oxygen-carrying

capacity of the blood in the body. Patients suffering from anaemia are affected due to poor oxygen supply to the body and are physically affected in the course of pursuing their normal daily physical activities. Using Repotin as the treatment helps to improve the quality of life of such patients. Genius’s facility in Goodwood, Cape Town is a state-of-the-art facility that was redesigned to meet Good Manufacturing Practice standards for the production of G-CSF. The drug produced at the facility is the second important biosimilar used in the treatment of cancer patients suffering from neutropenia, a low white blood cell count as a result of chemotherapy treatment. To date, Genius has invested hundreds of millions of rands on innovative hightechnology plant and solutions to prepare for the future commercialisation of its products. Genius has developed 22 global patents in the areas of immunotherapy, which makes use of the body’s own immune cells to fight a range of cancers and diseases. Genius has established international research and development partnerships that include the University of Cardiff in Wales, the Universities of Pretoria and Cape Town and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research as well as special partnerships with leading African scientists and innovators on the continent.

itsenic is the collaboration between Capetonian Jitsvinger and popular hip hop producer Arsenic on the decks. The Afrikaans vernacular wordsmith and the beat-maker have teamed up for an experimental project that explores their combined musical influences, inspired by musical greats such as Bobby Hendricks and Errol Dyers. The award-winning Jitsvinger (real name Quintin Goliath) is a versatile artist who lists poetry and composing among his many accomplishments. He has worked with poet and author Antjie Krog and poet Kgafela oa Magogodi, and has collaborated with Khoisan praise poet Jethro Louw to perform traditional cultural music in Taiwan. “Debating, criticising, communicating—

that’s my main thing I put forward when writing any song,” he says, having appeared at acclaimed festivals such as the Spier Poetry Festival, Poetry Africa, Obs Fest and Oppikoppi, among others. Arsenic’s unique style is a jazz sound grounded and contextualised in his personal hip hop signature. He has produced beats for a number of local hip hop heavyweights and some of Cape Town’s most promising newcomers. Arsenic has also teamed up with Youngsta on D.N.A, a collaborative album with a dominating style of hip hop known as boom bap, characterised by hard-hitting kick drums and slapping snares. The Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Festival, the National Arts Festival and the Wits 969 Festival are three events at which Arsenic has showcased his talents, his most popular body of work being his series of mixtapes titled, Hidden Formulas. He is currently busy producing volume 5.

Kunene draws his influences from

Zulu folklore and culture

Who’s Who 2015

uitarist Madala Kunene has been described as “having a single-minded and uniquely unconventional nature”. Despite being born into a family of academics, he began his busking career on Durban’s beachfront at the age of seven. He made his first guitar out of a cookingoil tin with fish gut for the strings, and very quickly became a popular performer in the townships. In the early 1970s, Kunene started performing as a professional artist playing in a variety of styles, earning him the title, “King of the Zulu Guitar”. Discovered by Sipho Gumede, he went to work in Johannesburg, where he considered himself privileged to share the stage with such luminaries as Robert “Doc” Mthalane and his band Songamasu, Shor Philips, Winston “Mankunku” Ngozi and Busi Mhlongo. Encouraged by his friend Duze Mahlobo, Kunene revived his ‘Madalaline’ style of guitar playing, combining blues and soul with African folk, and developed the trance-like quality of his Zulu folk singing. He draws his influences from Zulu folklore and culture—and with wit and clarity, relates traditional Zulu folktales preserved for posterity. He also created the soundtrack for the highly acclaimed 2004 South African film, Yesterday. In 2012, Kunene was honoured at the Splashy Fen Music Festival for his role in advancing music in this country, and in 2013 at the SA Heroes Concert Awards. He still performs to audiences around the world as far afield as Germany, Switzerland, France and the United States. In 2015, he will be participating in Forest Jam Madagascar and the Sakifo Music Festival in Réunion. Kunene’s latest offering, titled 1959, is dedicated to those affected by the forced removals of that year which destroyed communities—including his own.

elanie Scholtz is an award-winning jazz singer and composer. Playing piano since the age of five, she went on to study classical singing at the Eoan Group before completing an Opera Diploma cum laude at the University of Cape Town in 2000. Two years later, she was named Best Jazz Vocalist in the Old Mutual Jazz Encounters talent search competition. Other awards have followed, including the 2010 Standard Bank Young Artist for jazz, and all three prizes in the Jazz Revelations competition at the 2012 Jazz á Juan Festival held in Antibes, France. She was invited to be part of the festival programme in 2013 and continues to tour internationally on a regular basis. Scholtz has released five albums and has collaborated with many South African and international jazz artists such as guitarist Jimmy Dludlu, Sibongile Khumalo, Joe McBride and Gerald Veasley. ailing from Amsterdam, pianist and composer Mike del Ferro began studying classical piano at the age of 9, inspired by his father—the late opera singer Leonard del Ferro, who sang with Maria Callas and Leonard Bernstein, among others. He fell in love with jazz, and has gone on to release a number of albums under his own name as well as acting as a sideman, performing an impressive array of musical genres influenced by some of the most exotic places on Earth. He has explored 110 countries in his search for musical collaborations, and the results have been an eye-opening musical bridge between cultures. This eclectic combination of styles has led to a series of 10 collaborative CDs titled, “Songs Inspired by Wandering the Globe”, with musicians from all over the world. The latest CD in this collection, Impressions of Brazil, was released in 2013 and features Brazilian samba singer/guitarist, Ceumar.

Hungarian Tony Lakatos was influenced from an early age by his father and brother, who were famous gypsy violinists. Though he also started with the violin at age 6, the saxophone became his instrument of choice as he got older and led to a professional career as a musician—producing more than 300 LPs and CDs as lead player or sideman. He was the first Hungarian musician whose songs were included in the Gavin Report publication’s top 10 listings on American Jazz Music Radio. Now living in Germany, Lakatos performs all over the globe at various music festivals while also running several master classes and workshops. Audiences at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival are bound to be inspired and mesmerised by Tony’s mastery of the saxophone.

W

inston “Mankunku” Ngozi was arguably the foremost exponent of tenor saxophone in South Africa, and one of the most respected jazz composers. He played several instruments before concentrating mainly on his beloved Selmer Mark V1 sax, with early inspiration coming from the great John Coltrane. His 1968 hit title track “Yakhali’nkomo”— recorded with pianist Lionel Pillay, bassist Agrippa Magwaza and drummer Early Mabuza—is still one of the best-known compositions in the country. From the 1980s, he worked extensively with pianist, producer and band leader Mike Perry,

leading to the formation of their label, Nkomo. The Mankunku Quintet toured extensively throughout southern Africa as well as Sweden and Belgium. Their 1999 record Molo Africa won a South African Music Award for Best Traditional Jazz Album. Mankunku’s international status grew while performing internationally with Perry, gaining a following wherever the duo went. He passed away in 2009 at the age of 66, and Perry’s tribute will be a masterful acknowledgement of not only the musical genius but of his friendship and working partnership with the legendary Winston Mankunku.

They gained worldwide critical acclaim following the release of their albums Legal Drug Money in 1996, Love, Peace & Nappiness in 1997 and LB IV Life in 1999. In March 1999, however, Freaky Tah passed away, resulting in the breakup of the group. fro-jazz sensation Naima Kay, born Lungile Khumalo, is a 2014 South African Music Award winner for Best Newcomer. Discovered in 2009 by Touch Africa Records, at the Ugu Jazz Festival in her hometown of Port Shepstone, her manager gave her the stage name “Naima”, which is Arabic for ‘peace’. An inherently shy person, she expresses herself through her music and released her debut album, the 12-track Umsebenzi, early in 2013, which she says both young and older people can relate to. “I write about love, life and things that happen around us. There’s also a gospel song on the album.” Naima has been writing songs for other artists including her brother, DJ Sammy, for many years, but has fully stepped out into the limelight to embrace a musical career. She attributes her influences to her brother and 83-yearold grandmother; also being in church inspired her to write the debut song “Lelilanga”, which achieved significant airplay and led to her award. Naima worked with the likes of Robbie Malinga, Scelo Gowane and DJ Sbu on her latest album, Ngiyavuma, released in October last year. Her vocal range is wide and encompasses a spread of melody that gives her a unique and ‘quality’ sound that both pleases and soothes the ear—confirming she is indeed a rising star. Ngiyavuma won the 2015 MetroFM Music Award for Best Female Album and was also nominated for Best African Pop Album and Best Remix (of the title track).

aima Mclean is a South African vocalist, poet, writer and actress who has been heralded as “The First Lady of Urban Soul”, with a strong musical background and inspiration from her internationally renowned father René Mclean (hard-bop saxophonist and flutist) and grandfather Jackie Mclean (jazz alto saxophonist). She brings a deep intelligence to her performances in both South Africa and abroad, which she infuses with various genres such as soul,

spoken word, hip hop and pop to create her distinct style of ‘urban soul’. She lists Sara Vaughan, Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, Jill Scott, Adele, Alicia Keys and Lira, among others, as her favourite artists. Mclean’s debut album, which was musically directed by award-winning South Africa singersongwriter RJ Benjamin, showcases a collection of authentic tracks with a Pan-African flavour. A highlight was opening for internationally acclaimed R&B singer Joe on his tour to South Africa in 2011. The talented singer is also a promising actor, having had roles on South African soapie Generations, British television series Wild At Heart, and in the movie Vehicle 19 opposite the late Paul Walker. In 2014, she starred in the successful SA theatre production of The Coloured Museum, directed by James Ngcobo.

here are few South African artists as in tune with the ‘rhythm of their soul’ as Ringo Madlingozi. From his debut solo release in 1996 to his latest offering in 2014, Ringo—as he is affectionately known—has carved out a niche for himself by crafting songs rooted in an authentic African voice, yet appealing to a broad audience. The key message coming through loud and clear throughout his music is ‘love’. Ringo has been experimenting with various rhythms and collaborations, recording with artists as diverse as Hugh Masekela, Simply Red, Teddy Pendergrass and Caiphus Semenya, as well as for the movie, The Lion King. This work has earned him multiple awards over the years, including South African Music Awards and Kora Awards. Ringo, with his signature gap-toothed smile (which he had closed a few years ago, much to the disappointment of some fans), has delighted audiences all over the world: in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Netherlands, Spain and Germany. Last year, he returned with his new album Vulani, which means ‘open up’, or ‘make way’. Indeed, audiences at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival should make way for this energetic entertainer.

From Carnegie Hall, New York to Newtown, Johannesburg, when he hits a stage, the world sits up and listens. Born in Joburg in 1951, Mabuse began playing the drums from the age of 8 and the instrument garnered him the nickname “Hotstix”. He has mastered many other instruments such as flute, piano, saxophone, kalimba, alto flute and African drums. He started his career as a professional musician at the age of 15, forming the band The Beaters, which evolved to become Harari. In 1978, the group performed in the United States with Hugh Masekela and subsequently supported and backed Percy Sledge, Timmy Thomas, Letta Mbulu, Brook Benton and Wilson Pickett on their South African tours. This eclectic ensemble was impossible to categorise—mixing funk and disco with jazz, while also using traditional African instruments to create a completely unique sound. After they split in 1982, Mabuse went on to achieve a long and successful solo career that continues today. In 1985, he released probably his single most important hit, “Burn Out”, which became South Africa’s first crossover hit with its infectious township

Sons of Kemet S

ons of Kemet are a British jazz group formed in 2011, comprising of Shabaka Hutchings, Oren Marshall, Seb Rochford and Tom Skinner. Their sound is an eclectic mix of jazz, rock, Caribbean folk and African tunes— drawing on Hutchings’s Jamaican heritage and New Orleans street music. This unique and infectious take on jazz is earning them a loyal following wherever they play. There is a meaningful cultural slant, with Hutchings in particular drawing influence from legendary Jamaican artists Count Ossie and Cedric “Im” Brooks to produce the “happy island music sound that links to the African diaspora”. The band’s name is derived from the ideological Kemetic Principles written by the Ancient Egyptian Nubian King Neferkare Shabaka, influencing Greek philosophy and expounding on universal consciousness—which they aim to evoke through their music. The band won Best Jazz Act at the 2013 MOBO (Music of Black Origin) Awards, and in September

2013 released their highly anticipated debut album Burn, which received a variety of awards and nominations including The Arts Desk Album of the Year and a nomination for the Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Award for Album of the Year. he Brother Moves On (TBMO) is a South African performance art ensemble from Johannesburg. The group was founded some time between 2008 and 2010 by the late broad-based artist, Nkululeko Mthembu. Members include Mthembu’s older brother Siyabonga aka Mr. Gold; their first cousin on their father’s side, Zelizwe Mthembu aka Makongela; Raytheon Moorvan/Raytheism; Ayanda Zalekile; and Simphiwe Tshabalala. As of 2012, Rob Scher joined on saxophone. TBMO began as a self-proclaimed art movement mainly of graphic and fine artists, and began incorporating instrumentalists for the live performance environment. TheCITY I

ndie urban-electro outfit, TheCITY, is an evolving musical statement between an unlikely group of musicians: long-time friends Clement Carr, Bonj Mpanza, Ryan McArthur and Ruby Crowie. Each member was originally part of other bands, but in 2010 they merged their talents to bring together their love of gospel, R&B, reggae and electro. They were approached by two-time Grammy Award-winning American producer Ron Feemster at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, who invited them to a special workshop programme. Apart from Feemster, the band has worked with electro-swing and dance group Goodluck; singer Chad Saaiman; ska bands Captain Stu and The Rudimentals, and a long list of other talented artists. They chose the name ‘TheCITY’ because the band and their music represent every city in the world, but Cape Town

as the Mother City of South Africa “gives a good idea of how we think a city should be.” They take the common musical language of their generation—pop, hip hop and electronica— and tell a different story through the sounds of Afro-urban-electro fusions; a story that tells where they are from and what they have been through. The group has performed at a number of Cape Town events including Synergy Live 2012, MCQP 2012 and Music Exchange 2013.

he Mahotella Queens is a South African female group formed in 1964 by music producer, Rupert Bopape. The current line-up of Queens comprises Hilda Tloubatla, Nobesuthu Mbadu and Amanda Nkosi, who joined in 2013 upon the retirement of Mildred Mangxola. The group is noted for their distinct vocal harmony sound, guitar-led mbaqanga music and fast-paced stage dancing—often performing with deep-voiced ‘groaner’, Simon Mahlathini (who died in 1999). Having celebrated their golden jubilee in 2014, the group has had hit singles throughout their illustrious career—most of which appear on their latest album, 50 Years. During the mid-1980s, a number of Western musical projects put the spotlight on traditional South African music, with The Indestructible Beat of Soweto and Paul Simon’s Graceland album in particular re-establishing the Mahotella Queens and Mahlathini.

The Queens have toured with many great names: In 2006, they were the support act for Ladysmith Black Mambazo in the United Kingdom and headlined the World of Music, Arts and Dance—an international arts festival; they toured Europe in 2007; in 2010, the Queens appeared in Pee Wee Ellis’s show, “Still Black, Still Proud: An African Tribute to James Brown”, and toured the UK with Hugh Masekela in the same year. In 2013, the Queens proved they have their finger firmly on the pulse of

contemporary music, recording a modernised version of “Gazette (Kazet)”, one of their best-known hits, with singer Zamo and kwaito star Brickz for the MTN8 Last Muso Standing competition. What keeps the Mahotella Queens going strong after five decades—and making music with such apparent effortless ease? Says Tloubatla: “I guess we are true musicians, born musicians—we’re talented! We’ve got the spirit of true musicians, hence we know how to go about a song, how to do a song.”

T

he Pacific Express, formed originally in the 1970s, was a jazz-rock band from the Cape Flats in Cape Town. It was a groundbreaker in both musical and political fields. The founder members Paul Abrahams (bass), Jack Momple (drums) and Issy Ariefdien (guitar) were later joined by Chris Schilder (Ibrahim Khalil Shihab) on piano, vocalists Zayn Adams and Kitty Tshikana, and percussionist Vic Higgins. Together they became somewhat of an informal ‘jazz school’, the first of its kind in Cape Town. The more experienced players coached talented youngsters and even later inducted them into the band. Artists such as Tony Cedras, Jonathan Butler, Alvin Dyers, Basil Coetzee and Robbie Jansen all came through The Pacific Express. The band’s biggest success came with the soul ballad “Give A Little Love”, which swept through the South African charts in the 1970s and is still a well-loved song to this day. But because they were musical narrators recording the turmoil of apartheid, the mixed-race band often fell foul of the law: The video for “Give A Little Love” was banned from airing on television by the SABC. Notwithstanding, The Pacific Express continued to track their way to musical success. Three albums followed, and their support grew to include fans in Nigeria and as far afield as France and Japan.

tephen Bruner, aka Thundercat, comes from a musically gifted family. His father Ronald Bruner, Sr is an internationally renowned jazz drummer who has played with the Temptations, Diana Ross, Gary Bartz and Gladys Knight. Stephen’s brother Ronald, Jr is also a Grammy-winning drummer. A talented bassist, songwriter and vocalist, Stephen first had a minor hit in Germany as a member of the boy band, No Curfew. Soon after, he joined his brother’s metal band, Suicidal Tendencies, playing bass on their worldwide tours while still in high school. Also in his teens, he toured Japan with American jazz musician and composer, Stanley Clarke. As Thundercat, Bruner takes his jazz roots and works with a mix of artists who suit his wildly experimental sensibilities. His syncopated, groove-heavy basslines can be heard on albums by Erykah Badu, Sa-Ra, Flying Lotus and Snoop Dogg, among others.

Flying Lotus helped produce Thundercat’s 2011 solo debut album, The Golden Age of Apocalypse; his unique bass and repurposed take on 1970s fusion received considerable acclaim. He has been compared to late American bassist, Jaco Pastorius. Thundercat and Flying Lotus teamed up again on the second album Apocalypse—a darker work that blurs pop, funk, electronica and progressive rock. It’s a deeply personal album, recorded after the death of one of Bruner’s closest friends, jazz piano prodigy Austin Peralta.

he music bug bit Sibusiso Victor Masondo at a young age, spurred on by his guitarist father and two elder brothers who played the drums and bass guitar. His big break came at university when he and his jazz band mates caught the attention of legendary jazz musicians Max Roach and Clark Terry while on a trip to the United States. After graduation, he accepted an invitation to tour the US, Europe and South Africa with the local band, Friends First. Masondo’s first commission to produce an album came from none other than Mama Afrika, Miriam Makeba, in 1990. This would be the first in a long line of work for top artists such as Ringo Madlingozi, Rebecca Malope, PJ Powers and FreshlyGround. He also enjoyed stints as a solo artist and as a member of Ray Phiri’s band, Stimela. He took his love of music a step further by becoming one of the first African musicians to design a bass guitar for sale worldwide: The Victor Masondo Bass—with his name engraved in mother-ofpearl—was commissioned by the Japanese equipment giant, Yamaha, after Masondo had produced an album for Japanese diva Tokiko Kato and toured with her in 2001 in her home country. With this guitar, Masondo entered the Yamaha Hall of Fame. He is currently working on a new album, and his appearance at this year’s Cape Town International Jazz Festival will salute Friends and Legends, “celebrating our rich heritage and legacy”. Masondo will be joined on stage by celebrated South African singer, actress and playwright Thembi Mtshali, who has performed with world-renowned artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela and Abdullah Ibrahim. product of the Berklee School of Music, Wallace Roney is an American hard-bop and post-bop trumpeter. He has been playing since the age of 16 and earned the admiration and respect of his colleagues and elders in the process. He was discovered to have perfect pitch at 4 years old. Roney is one of the few musicians of his generation who learnt and perfected his craft directly from a jazz master: He was tutored by Miles Davis, who heard him play at the latter’s 1983 birthday gala performance at Carnegie Hall. Roney is the only trumpet player to have been personally mentored by Davis. He does a pitch-perfect imitation of Davis, which fools even the most knowledgeable jazz listeners. The highlight of Roney’s association with the master musician came at the 1991 Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland when he shared the stage with Davis and Quincy Jones. This historic performance was later recorded for the album Miles and Quincy: Live at Montreux, which earned Roney his first Grammy Award. After Davis died, Roney banded together with the original members of Miles’s famed quintet—Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Wayne Shorter and Tony Williams— to tour the world in tribute. They earned a Grammy in 1994 for the resulting album, A Tribute to Miles. Roney has played with many of the industry’s other luminaries including Ornette Coleman, Art Blakey, Carole King, Joni Mitchell and Dizzy Gillespie. He formed the Wallace Roney Quintet in 1993. His musical presentations, from his first to his latest album, show he is willing and able to push boundaries and collaborate with the best contemporary musicians in order to maintain a fresh sound. Joining Roney at this year’s Cape Town International Jazz Festival are Lenny White and Buster Williams. Leonard White III is a versatile fusion drummer and acclaimed producer. Described as “one of the founding fathers of jazz fusion”, he is best-known for being part of pianist Chick Corea’s Return To Forever—one of the key jazz-rock fusion bands of the 1970s. White has played with the likes of Miles Davis, Stan Getz and Joe Henderson over a career spanning more than three decades, and has co-created some of the industry’s most influential music. Charles Anthony Williams is a Grammy-winning bassist who has played, recorded and collaborated with many of the giants of the jazz world such as Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Sonny Stitt, Kenny Barron and Frank Morgan, among others. In the ‘80s, he was a member of both the Timeless All-Stars and Sphere (the Thelonious Monk tribute band). and has appeared on television ads and soundtracks for films and TV shows.

orn Yvonne Mhinga, Chaka Chaka has become a multi-award winning performing artist, entrepreneur and humanitarian. Her 30-year career in the music industry began as a teenager with the explosive hit, “I’m in Love With a DJ”. Its disco sounds were built on mbaqanga roots, with an added synthesised edge and English lyrics. Her debut album of the same name catapulted her to stardom, and her distinct style became known as “bubblegum”. It became the dominant dance music of the 1980s and early ‘90s, with Yvonne and Brenda Fassie its biggest stars. Inspired by her travels around the continent, she shed her disco image and began styling herself in African head-dress and fabric, and the “Princess of Africa” emerged. With her powerful alto voice, Yvonne has graced stages around the world alongside other megastars such as Bono, Annie Lennox, Youssou N’Dour, Queen, Johnny Clegg, Miriam Makeba and Hugh Masekela. She has also performed for Queen Elizabeth, Bill Clinton and several African heads of state. Numerous awards are behind her name, which have translated into platinum, gold and silver hit records. Her face has graced the covers of more magazines than many other African icons. From her performance in 1981 as the first black child on South African television, Yvonne Chaka Chaka has consistently developed her creative capabilities and expanded her media repertoire to include record producer, actor, as well as talk radio and television show host. She can now also add humanitarian to the list.

Training and skills development initiatives of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival

ducation, training and skills development are fundamental to espAfrika’s corporate social investment policy. The Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF) presents a series of development-focused workshops that cover a range of activities and functional areas within the entertainment industry. This year’s programme includes a number of workshops embedded within the events and entertainment industries respectively. These workshops include, but are not limited to: the Arts Journalism Course, with both writing and mentoring components; a Photographic Journalism course; Fashion Workshop, Music Technology Workshop and a Music Business Workshop; the Arts & Culture Focus Schools Programme, which includes elements of event management, music production and management programmes. In addition, the very popular Master Classes, facilitated by professional musicians and artists, headline the annual training and development offerings. Our Community Outreach Music Workshops as a programme is designed with children in mind. Youngsters are introduced to the basics of music culture in this workshop that is suitably named, Gigs For Kids. New to the department is the Media and Marketing Training Programme and Work Experience. Select workshops are made available free of charge. Others, however, carry a nominal fee that covers tuition only. Workshops are generally open

Who’s Who 2015

to the public, but through advanced booking to avoid disappointment. Workshops take place across the Western Cape. Venues include the prestigious Artscape Theatre Centre on the Foreshore, Guga S’thebe Theatre in Langa, Athlone Stadium as well as the Cape Sun Hotel in the city centre.

Arts and Culture Focus Schools Programme

This programme—comprising rehearsals, event production workshops and live performances—is presented by industry professionals and mentors who provide training within music industry standards. The programme includes a skills development course, stage etiquette prep and musical appreciation, and provides training in musical and production elements. Each year, one of the participating schools is selected to perform at the CTIJF. An amalgamated group, consisting of members of each high school ensemble, has the opportunity to perform as an All-Star Band at the Free Community Concert hosted by the CTIJF. A Skills Development Workshop Programme introduces students to the basic requirements of event and production management. Qualified event management professionals mentor students participating in the course. Those who excel in the programme are chosen to shadow professionals within the various departments

Gigs For Kids

This is an exciting interactive children’s show accompanied with workshops that introduce youngsters to the culture of music. The highly energetic show is both entertaining and educational, and aims to develop skills such as music appreciation, rhythm, co-ordination and musicality. Children between three and 10 years of age are introduced to the wonderful world of sounds, rhythm, beats, instruments and characterisation.

Arts Journalism

The CTIJF Arts Journalism course is the longest running workshop within the festival’s Training and Development programme. Participants are carefully selected for the programme, which covers units of study set out of the South African Qualifications Authority. This year’s curriculum encompassed the “Cover a Specialist Beat as a Journalist”, which academically equates to the Level 5 National Certificate in Journalism. The course provides a

This interactive workshop brings music business and master classes to previously disadvantaged youth from the Cape Flats. The music business workshop thematically covers the “Current State of the Music Industry” while the Master Class looks at stage performances, preparing for auditions, techniques for the composer/arranger and small group ensembles. In addition, the workshop includes a live performance, followed by feedback from the audience and the visiting guest musicians.

This course is facilitated by Peter McKenzie (chief photographer for southern Africa at Panapress) and is focused on the concepts of perspective, practice and one’s approach to photography, rather than basic technical concern. In other words, technical realities will be the visual voice of the photographer. Participants are encouraged to explore a wider repertoire of possibilities outside of the contested space of live-stage photography. Research and its relationship to pre-visualisation complements the practical sessions. Each participant presents a portfolio of jazz photographs taken at various festival activities, which is used as the basis for quality improvement and development of the individual’s visual voice. Some sessions are combined with the Arts Journalism course to explore and consolidate the relationship between words and images and the photographer/journalist collaboration.

Students and scholars from schools surrounding the Cape Flats are invited to be part of this upliftment and mentorship programme. The focus is thematically based on business development within the music industry. More than anything else, this programme deals with the transfer of skills between industry professionals, educators and students.

Fashion Workshop

This workshop is designed specifically for those interested in fashion. The programme targets fashion students, and is the result of the collaboration between the CTIJF and the Cape Town Fashion Council. Workshops look at broadening the understanding and dissecting the dynamics of the fashion industry. The work of one lucky designer is showcased at the Cape Town Design Festival, which is the end result of this workshop. The showcase is very much the brainchild of the Training and Development programme of the CTIJF.

Master Classes

An interactive encounter presented by some of the top jazz and urban musicians in the world, this is an opportunity to spend quality time with selected musicians performing at the festival.

Technology Workshop

Attendance of these workshops is targeted at high-level musicians with a focus on technology in the world of music and entertainment.

The promotion of a low key, high impact development planned around the human scale and the provision of places for meeting, from public urban spaces, parks and niche market conferencing opportunities. Accessibility and affordability for all the people of metro with a focus on LSM 6 and 7 to be an integral part of the development. This will ensure micro –enterprise opportunities for the increasing middle class in the metro. Pedestrian friendly and walkable character including leisure activities for children and families. Functional linkages with Route 67 and the Inner City will be made. A mixed spectrum of land uses from housing, leisure, commercial, recreational and retail offering to be provided. Environmental conservation is critical. The idea of a Children’s developmental centre is gaining momentum. The green lung of the river itself will be cleaned and consideration given to ensuring that flooding is minimised. Its proximity to the right built heritage of the inner city and the critical connection to the future Waterfront will be maximised to the fullest to ensure that this becomes a sought after niche development that will significantly contribute to economic development of Nelson Mandela Bay.

Rafique Mayet

Rafique “Rafs” Mayet was the first photographer to be invited to show his work at the CTIJF. He has been professionally involved in photography since 1983. After finishing high school, Mayet

attempted various career paths before dabbling in photography during another period of unemployment. Learning the basics in the darkroom of noted documentary photographer Omar Badsha, he later became a member of AfraPix, a photographic collective that extensively covered the resistance in the townships and other places during the dark days of the ‘80s and early ‘90s in South Africa. Mayet’s journey in music started in the late ‘70s, when he was employed as a roadie with the seminal group, Spirits Rejoice and Joy, then came a stint as a programme producer for Treasure Tshabala with Capital Radio as well as manager of the legendary Kippies Jazz Club in Johannesburg. He has been the curator of the Duotone exhibitions since 2004, besides exhibiting his own photography both locally and abroad.

Zamani Makhanya

Zamani Romeo Makhanya was first introduced to art at Amanzimtoti College, one of three schools he attended before studying for a fine art degree

at Fort Hare in the Eastern Cape, which he completed in 1984. An honours degree and a teaching diploma followed in 1985. He then lectured at Edgewood Teachers Training College until 1999, leaving to concentrate on his own art which reflected the socio-political issues of the day. He subsequently went on to form a collective of artists from the Durban area who called themselves Third Eye Vision. The group rejected old artistic traditions, instead focusing on the importance of being African. They explored African symbolism and were heavily influenced by abstracts and the silent dialogue between artists. Makhanya prefers to work in pastels, slowly building up the surface area by using the sgraffito technique to etch into the surface, bringing out colour variations and showing different textures. He held his first solo exhibition in 2003 at the African Art Centre in Durban, but has also contributed to several group shows, both locally and abroad.

Warren Ludski

A former Cape Town journalist, Warren Ludski now lives in Canberra, Australia. He has worked in the media for almost five decades. In his time in Cape Town, he worked for publications that reported on and for the communities of the Cape Flats. In 1986, he emigrated to Australia and began work almost immediately doing media liaison, media releases and speeches for various Australian government departments and ministers until 2011. His passion for newspapers, however, was satisfied through night-editing work for The Canberra Times until 2013. Ludski now writes a blog, Music Legends of Cape Town: Warren Ludski Talks to The Elders, which is dedicated to telling the stories of Cape Town entertainers who could be regarded as ‘legends’ in the community. He has charted the course of music as

local artists worked their way through the Beatles and the pop explosion of the mid1960s, the soul sound and psychedelic and underground of the late ‘60s, the disco dominance of the ‘70s, and the birth of rap in the ‘80s. He has watched and listened as South African jazz musicians moved from mainstream to avantgarde and beyond. Ludski’s writings have been accompanied by many photographs, and the images on display at the Duotone Exhibition are part of his collection, some of which he has kept for more than 40 years. We would like to acknowledge the many photographers whose work is shown here and thank them for their contribution to this exhibition.

Who’s Who 2015

The original old-school hip hop legend, Big Dre, has been firing up dance floors for years— bringing the house down at hip hop series such as Geto 3000, Boogie Down Knights and The Lounge Sessions. He describes himself as a “real hip hop renaissance man”, doing everything from deejaying to radio presenting, from photography to editing the Word Up eZine (wordupezine. blogspot.com).
