His Excellency Mr Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma President of the Republic of South Africa

African arts & culture is thriving IT IS A PLEASURE EACH YEAR TO ACKNOWLEDGE AND CELEBRATE THE CAPE TOWN INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL AS ONE OF THE FOREMOST CONTRIBUTORS TO OUR THRIVING ARTS & CULTURE AS WELL AS TOURISM INDUSTRIES. We recognise the festival’s commitment annually to sustaining a viable entertainment sector for South Africa. This year, as widely expected, music lovers and patrons of this event will be entertained by an all-star line-up that promises to deliver an exceptional experience for all festival goers. Some of the world’s jazz and jazz-influenced music greats will be mingling with South Africa’s very own music royalty, while we also welcome the winner of the espYoungLegends competition, launched during this festival period as a means toward ensuring even future legends will have the opportunity to garner new fans. We think this is another example of how the entertainment industry can successfully evolve and nurture talent. Another highlight of this year’s festival, numerous free master classes, workshops and skills development programmes have been designed to propagate the professionalism of this burgeoning sector. African arts & culture

Who’s Who 2016

is gaining attention on the world stage, and the participants can therefore look forward to developing a career for years to come—all the more enriched and prepared by their exposure to these programmes. In addition, the free concert that takes place in Greenmarket Square each year is another example of this festival’s commitment to generating unity through inclusion and the common love for music. We are proud to support this initiative through our Ministry of Arts and Culture. Indeed, South Africa has a wealth of musical and professional talent, but it also has an abundance of natural beauty, which attracts not only international stars looking forward to performing on our shores but also encourages tourism. 2016 will be no different, with more foreign visitors expected to stay longer in order to enjoy the bounty and beauty we have to offer as a nation. The Cape Town International Jazz Festival continues to grow both in terms of fans and revenue, as well as the amount of tourism it brings to the country. We must voice our gratitude to the fans for their continued patronage of this event. By your presence, you are making a positive difference to our country’s arts & culture industry. Finally, I welcome you all to the 17th Cape Town International Jazz Festival. Please enjoy.

Mr Nathi Mthethwa Minister of Arts & Culture

Music bridges divides AS WE WELCOME THE 17TH EDITION OF THE CAPE TOWN INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL, WE NEED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT ARTS, CULTURE AND HERITAGE PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN NATION BUILDING AND PROMOTING SOCIAL COHESION. In our liberation struggle, musicians in particular used their music to conscientise South Africans and the world against apartheid. Out of this engagement, many were encouraged to join the ranks of the anti-apartheid movement worldwide; great works of art emerged, as well as the songs we continue to listen to even today. The music was an affirmation of our humanity, and stirred people into action through recognising the oppression that existed and the need to bridge divides between people. Yet, more than 20 years into our democracy, racism remains a cause for concern—threatening to slow our progress toward our goals of social integration and inclusion, cultural coalescence and a deracialised economy. We must remain resolute and focus on the bigger goal. As South Africans, the fundamental spirit with which we moved forward in the democratic era was the belief that fundamental human rights are to be enjoyed by all persons regardless of colour, creed or any other extraneous considerations,

Who’s Who 2016

and that we are building a democratic society characterised by non-racialism and non-sexism. Our shared values and principles include ubuntu, human rights and equality, non-racialism, non-tribalism, non-sexism, social solidarity and civic responsibility. Our support of this festival remains firm, because it creates a platform where people of different walks of life can come together. It offers an opportunity for people across historical divides to congregate and share spaces in which they can engage. But in the current climate, more is expected of all of us. All concert goers should leave here pledging to stand up and speak out against racism. Let this festival continue to be the place where our musical living legends rub shoulders with younger artists so that, together, they create something wholly new. Let this festival also become a springboard for musicians against racism—artists for non-racialism. As the first president of our democratic country,Tata Madiba, said: “[T]he real makers of history are the ordinary men and women of our country; their participation in every decision about the future is the only guarantee of true democracy and freedom.” Together, let us say no to racism. Let us declare that it shall not be done in our name. Racism must fall. In its place, let us embrace equality, unity, tolerance.

Creating a shared heritage IT IS HEARTENING TO WELCOME JAZZ LOVERS TO THE CITY OF CAPE TOWN ON THIS AUSPICIOUS OCCASION. It remains an incredible honour to be the host of “Africa’s Grandest Gathering”. The Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF) has no doubt been one of the biggest contributors of the Mother City’s reputation as the events capital of Africa. It has put us on the map as a city that has the ability to impeccably support the largest music event in sub-Saharan Africa. To witness the calibre of international acts who grace our shores to display their craft at this event is nothing but spectacular. Moreover, this creates the perfect stage for our local artists as well to exhibit their immaculate home-grown talent. I would like to thank all the artists, organisers and sponsors for the work they have put into the festival to ensure its consistent success. We are determined to build an inclusive city, and the foundation thereof is creating a shared heritage. The Cape Town International Jazz Festival has become an institution that breaks down barriers and gives us the opportunity to celebrate our shared love of music—together. I look forward to us all participating once again in this musical celebration!

Mr Khalid Abdulla Chief Executive Officer, AEEI Acting Chief Executive Officer, espAfrika

The jewel in Cape Town’s crown of events DIAMONDS ARE FORMED WHEN CARBON-BASED MINERALS ARE PUT UNDER ENORMOUS PRESSURE OVER A PERIOD OF TIME, RESULTING IN A PRECIOUS GEM THAT COMMANDS INTERNATIONAL RESPECT AND VALUE FOR ITS UNIQUE RARITY. In business, sports and arts, performing and achieving targets in a tightened economic environment can be extremely pressurising, but espAfrika has proven once again that even when the pressure is on, the Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF) is still the jewel in the Mother City’s crown of events. The stellar line-up for the 17th annual CTIJF is exceptional and a true testament to the talent and skill this company continues to exude. This is further substantiated by the continued support of our national sponsors and partners, as well as our broad range of suppliers. Many of these suppliers and stakeholders are local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) for which the festival provides an opportunity to grow both economically and professionally—allowing them to foster job creation in their own organisations. espAfrika is proud to create this platform for SMEs in South Africa to develop and thrive. Through this festival, we annually generate close to 3 000 jobs. This is how the CTIJF is making a significant impact on our national economy— something we have remained committed to doing throughout our 17 years in action. The festival annually contributes more than R500 million to the Western Cape gross domestic product. In 2015, the CTIJF created 2 723 jobs, of which 321 were direct and 2 402 indirect. However, the constancy of all those who

Who’s Who 2016

participate in the festival and its allied endeavours is most strongly demonstrated through the works of the CTIJF’s sustainable Training & Development Programme. Because of the increased encouragement from our funders, sponsors and you, the Festinos, we have been able to broaden our training budget and skills transfer initiatives this year, incorporating additional schools and public music organisations, awarding more scholarships and producing further workshops such as the new initiative called uMculo Wam (My Music), which will take place in Langa. A prominent highlight and a favourite throughout the local community is the annual Free Concert held in the historic Greenmarket Square. Its inclusivity and turnout is a clear sign that the love of music unites people from all walks of life, whether locals or visiting tourists. It is all these initiatives that will ensure the CTIJF remains a world-class event and retains its status as Cape Town’s number-one favourite festival—one of the many accolades recently awarded. espAfrika continues to lead through innovation with the launching of yet another new project this season: espYoungLegends. To pioneer is to lead, and I am therefore pleased to say this company has risen admirably to the challenge of securing its place in the halls of festival fame. With its eye for detail, strong professional and creative approach to business, and the discovery of some phenomenal new talent to enthral festival goers, espAfrika is ahead of the game in strengthening and developing local arts & culture. On behalf of the espAfrika team, I wish you all an entertaining experience at Africa’s Grandest Gathering, and look forward to producing a top-notch festival for our beloved Festinos.

Mr Billy Domingo COO, espAfrika and Festival Director

Don’t imitate, innovate! SEVENTEEN YEARS AGO, ESPAFRIKA TOOK A QUANTUM LEAP OF FAITH AND ENVISIONED THE MULTISTAGE LIVE-ENTERTAINMENT EXPERIENCE THAT IS THE CAPE TOWN INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL. It has since grown to current capacity, attracting visitors from near and far; and evolved to lead the way in practical skills development and knowledge transfer of the entertainment industry. So what’s next? The answer is simple: Innovate. In addressing our own challenge, in the run-up to the 2016 event we launched a new concept called espYoungLegends which, in a relatively short space of time, saw an overwhelming number of entries. I am inordinately inspired by the response to this competition that aims to uncover tomorrow’s talent, the winner of which—Lana Crowster—is performing live on the Bassline stage at this year’s event. They are our future legends. On the subject of legends, the Legendary Ladies in Song—the mature and refined voices of the multiple award-winning singers and composers Dorothy Masuka and Abigail Kubeka, featuring penny-whistling great, Lemmy “Special” Mabaso— epitomise our capacity to create performing ambassadors who do their country and craft proud as true legends.

Who’s Who 2016

The Cape Town International Jazz Festival has been—and will always be—an event that offers its audience the confluence of established artists with that of rising stars. In 2016, this is amplified with an exceptional offering that stays true to my word, by having incorporated African acts that exemplify the natural talent this continent has to offer. This year’s line-up is a five-star smorgasbord of jazz and jazz-influenced performers at the top of their craft and whom we believe will appeal to each and every one of our many thousands of Festinos (festival goers). Compiling the programme for each festival is no mean feat, as the team strives to find synergy between what the fans want and what is current, relevant and entertaining. Once again, espAfrika has delivered, going beyond its own expectations; I remain indebted and grateful to every team member for helping me to continue maintaining the excellence that you, the patron, expects each year. But, more importantly, I would like to extend my thanks to those of you, our loyal Festinos, who took the time to engage with us, and we encourage you all to keep the requests and suggestions coming. We can only continue innovating and delivering if we maintain our mutual dialogue. This is, after all, Africa’s Grandest Gathering.

Who’s Who 2016

Angie Stone has become one of neo-soul’s leading lights, providing sharp insight into romantic relationships with her smoky yet upfront voice.

ANGIE STONE, hailing from Columbia, South Carolina as Angela Laverne Brown, began singing gospel music at a young age. While working several jobs, she began saving money to record her own demos at a local studio called PAW. Her first claim to fame was her membership in The Sequence, an all-female trio who recorded for pioneering hip hop label Sugar Hill, beginning with the 1979 single “Funk You Up”. Soon she was working with futuristic rap group Mantronix and rocker Lenny Kravitz, and later formed the classic R&B trio Vertical Hold. As its lead vocalist, she had a Top 40 R&B hit in 1993 with the smooth urban dance track, “Seems You’re Much Too Busy”. With the release of her 1999 solo debut, Black Diamond, Angie Stone became one of neo-soul’s leading lights, providing sharp insight into romantic relationships with her smoky yet upfront voice. Her most popular hits include “No More Rain (In This Cloud)”, “Wish I Didn’t Miss You” and “Brotha”. Her latest album, Dreams, was released in November 2015. She says it brought back how creating music is supposed to happen: “No pressure; just doing what you love to do. I’m ready to begin again.” Angie’s work has earned her three Grammy Award nominations, two Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards, and four Top 10 R&B albums. According to SingersRoom.com, “[Her] artistic journey continues to evolve because her music is relatable to people. She is the ultimate music survivor. Her career spans over three decades, and there’s still more to come from the R&B singer.”

Sheila E. Grammy-nominated drummer, percussionist, guitarist and singer-songwriter SHEILA ESCOVEDO—better known to the music world as Sheila E.—has been moving fans with her foot-tapping rhythms since her recording debut with jazz bassist Alphonso Johnson on his 1976 release, Yesterday’s Dreams. The young Sheila was influenced by her father, percussionist Pete Escovedo (with whom she frequently performs) and her equally musically gifted uncles. By her early 20s, she had already performed with Lionel Ritchie, Marvin Gaye, Herbie Hancock and Diana Ross—fusing pop, R&B, funk, rock, Latin and jazz. She has continued

Sheila E.’s first hit was “The Glamorous Life” in 1984, which topped the dance charts and garnered three MTV Award nominations with its incredibly popular music video. She also received nominations for an American Music Award and two Grammys. In 2014, she released her autobiography, The Beat of My Own Drum, as well as Icon, her first album in 13 years. “I started all this as Sheila Escovedo, then became this persona named Sheila E. She has been described as “a singer blessed with an unmistakable

timbre”.

Cassandra Wilson Described by critic Gary Giddins as “a singer blessed with an unmistakable timbre”, American jazz musician, vocalist, songwriter and producer CASSANDRA WILSON had an early interest in music. Her first musical education consisted of classical lessons, and she studied piano from ages 6 to 13. She also played the clarinet and was part of marching bands. She taught herself how to play the guitar, and began writing her own songs in folk style. After leaving her hometown of Jackson, Mississippi for New York City in the early 1980s, Wilson became one of the founding members of the M-Base Collective. She also toured

Wilson was named America’s best singer by TIME Magazine in 2001 with avant-garde trio New Air, and recorded three selections with them. In 1993, she released her landmark album, Blue Light ‘Til Dawn, which would pave the way for a new generation of jazz singers. Her repertoire moved toward a broad synthesis of blues, pop, jazz, world music and country. The late Miles Davis was one of Wilson’s greatest influences, and she produced the tribute album, Traveling Miles, from a series of jazz concerts she performed in 1997. She has continued interpreting music in fresh and creative ways, and has been lauded with two Grammys, a Django d’Or, an Edison Music Award and a BET Soul Train Award. Wilson was named America’s Best Singer by TIME Magazine in 2001, and in 2010 was presented with her own interpretive marker on the Mississippi Blues Trail, which documents the life stories of the state’s well-known bluesmen and women. Wilson’s latest album, Coming Forth By Day, is an homage to Billie Holiday and was released on 7 April 2015—the 100th anniversary of the birth of this jazz great. She will be performing the tribute at the 17th Cape Town International Jazz Festival.

“You can take a song that will never see the light of this combination of style of music, and you can give it some new life.” BBNG is a formally trained trio of young Canadian musicians—Matthew Tavares, Chester Hansen and Alex Sowinski—who met in 2010 through the Humber College jazz programme in Toronto. Since then, the three have challenged the rule book on improvised instrumental music, and taken a fresh look at the jazz tradition through their solo albums and interpretations of hip-hop tracks. Sowinski says, “It’s pretty cool, because you can take a song that will never see the light of this combination of style of music, and you can give it some new life.” The band is influenced by the music of The Roots, Mos Def, , Robert Glasper and John Coltrane. They have collaborated with such artists as Ghostface Killah and MF DOOM, among many others. The trio released their first EP, BBNG, in

36

June 2011 to wide praise—the marriage of jazz virtuosity and hip-hop source material offering a new take. A Prefix Magazine review described BBNG as “a jazz trio on paper—but often strange, forever imaginative, and ultimately revolutionary hip-hop and electronic beatmakers at heart.” Their second album, BBNG2, introduced the band’s original material in 2012. New songs brought together jazz, hip-hop, punk and dance music. BBNG’s highly anticipated collaborative project with Ghostface Killah, Sour Soul, was released in February 2015. Their notorious live performances have excited fans around the world—from Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California, to the Glastonbury Festival in England.

She was the first woman to be featured on the cover of Bass Player magazine.

Meshell Ndegeocello Ten-time Grammy nominated singer-songwriter, rapper and bassist MESHELL NDEGEOCELLO has been credited with sparking the neo-soul movement. She has dabbled in soul, spoken word, R&B, jazz, hip hop and rock as well as go-go, new wave and punk. Each of her albums has been different, integrating new sounds and ideas—but all are bound by a lyrical, spiritual search for love, justice, respect, resolution and happiness. Born Michelle Lynn Johnson in Berlin, she was raised in Washington, DC where she attended the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, among others. But at the age of 17, she changed her name and surname—the latter means “free like a bird” in Swahili. Ndegeocello started her music career in the late 1980s on the go-go circuit in DC. Apart from collaborating with, and producing albums for other jazz artists, Ndegeocello still loves playing the bass. Her influences include artists such as Sting and Stevie Wonder, and she was the first woman to be featured on the cover of Bass Player magazine. Her latest release, Comet, Come to Me, has been described as a culmination of all her previous work, with her soulful voice and the rhythmic bounce and groove of her bass coming together in an aurally pleasing union. “Comet, Come To Me was a little labour but a lot of love. It was made with my favourite collaborators… and it felt good to channel the sounds in my mind,” she says.

“I describe myself as

a singer-songwriter informed by gospel and

jazz, and my country roots of living.”

Lizz Wright “I discovered I could sing about the same time I started talking.” Thus began the musical journey of American singer-songwriter LIZZ WRIGHT, who has become renowned for her earthy alto voice and emotive yet straightforward vocal serenading. She sang and played the piano in church, but during her adult years she learnt more about other musical perspectives. “I describe myself as a singer-songwriter informed by gospel and jazz, and my country roots of living.” Wright is now a masterful artist who is as comfortable with jazz, folk, pop and blues as she is with gospel (as evident on her fourth album, Fellowship). In 2000, she joined the vocal quartet, In the Spirit, in Atlanta which soon became known as the best jazz group in the city. This spurred her on to develop her talent and her musical career. 2002 was a defining year. Her big breakthrough came when touring the United States as Billie Holiday in a tribute show, sharing the stage with her jazz heroes.

Wright’s latest album has been described as “her sexiest and most sensual yet”. In 2003, with the release of her acclaimed debut album, Salt, Wright gained even wider recognition as one of the most captivating female vocalists of her generation. The album raced to No. 2 on the Billboard Top Contemporary Jazz chart. With her next two records, she showed her prowess at songwriting and reinterpreting the music of Joe Henry and Neil Young, among others. She has toured extensively, and her studies in hand percussion have allowed her to add an extra dimension to her live performances. Wright’s latest album, Freedom & Surrender, comprises mostly original songs and skilful interpretations such as that of the Bee Gees’ “To Love Somebody” and “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” by Ewan MacColl. The album has been described as “her sexiest and most sensual yet”.

Get ready for an unforgettable auditory assault! JAZZ ATTACK, founded by smooth-jazz trumpeter Rick Braun and saxophonist Richard Elliot in 2005, has been winning the hearts of contemporary jazz fans year after year. Braun, who will lead the ensemble at the 2016 Cape Town International Jazz Festival, is a gregarious, charismatic musician-songwriter-producer. Before embarking on a solo trumpeting career, he worked with well-known artists such as Sade, Natalie Cole, David Benoit and BWB (with Grammy winners Kirk Whalum and Norman Brown). His smooth jazz and jazz-funk trumpet playing has amassed a catalogue of No. 1 Billboard Contemporary Jazz chart and radio hits over his career. Growing up in 1960s England, Peter White taught himself to play the acoustic guitar at age 8, while taking lessons on the recorder, piano and clarinet. He has become one of the most versatile acoustic guitarists on the contemporary jazz landscape, combining elements of jazz, pop and classical. His first solo recording, Reveillez-Vous, quickly rose to the No. 1 position on smooth jazz radio, and his subsequent releases all topped both radio and retail charts across the US, including the Billboard Contemporary Jazz chart. Multi-instrumentalist Euge Groove (born Steven Eugene Grove) joins Jazz Attack on saxophone, bringing his wide-ranging musical taste, impeccable musicianship and keen showmanship. His influences include the works of alto saxophonist David Sanborn and French classical player Marcel Mule. Groove has built an impressive career on his soulful saxophone sound and his love of jazz, R&B, gospel and blues. He has performed with Tina Turner, Elton John and Aaron Neville, among others, and his singles and CDs have continued to reach the top of Billboard and R&B charts. Who’s Who 2016

With over 25 million albums sold, SWV is one of the best-selling female R&B groups of all time. Coko, Taj and Lelee are SISTERS WITH VOICES (SWV), an American R&B/new jack swing trio. This Grammy-nominated outfit from New York City has been entertaining fans for more than 25 years, with over 25 million albums sold—making them one of the best-selling female R&B groups of all time. The three school friends first sang together in church. Then at the start of the 1990s, their self-recorded demo tape came to the attention of producer Teddy Riley, known in many circles as the father of jack swing. With his guidance, SWV released their first single “Right Here” in 1992, followed closely by their debut album, It’s About Time, which went double-platinum within its first year. This

production earned the trio a string of awards and nominations for their Top 10 R&B hits such as “I’m So Into You”, “Weak”, “Downtown” and “Always On My Mind”. The remix “Right Here/ Human Nature”, which sampled the Michael Jackson classic, stayed at No. 1 on the Billboard R&B charts for seven weeks. SWV disbanded in 1998 to pursue solo careers, but reunited in 2005 and released I Missed Us in 2012—nominated for a Soul Train Music Award and a Grammy. Their fifth studio album was released in February 2016. Titled Still, it features the ballad “Ain’t No Man” with SWV’s typical ‘90s sound that is sure to appeal to their faithful fan base as well as a new generation of R&B fans.

Victor Wooten Band VICTOR WOOTEN is an American bassist who has been hailed as “the Michael Jordan of the bass” and “one of the most fearless musicians on the planet”. The five-time Grammy winner is also talented with the fiddle, cello, kora, drums, keyboards and guitar. Since founding the highly lauded eclectic ensemble, Béla Fleck & The Flecktones, in 1990, Wooten has won major awards for a bass guitarist. He was voted Bassist of the Year by Bass Player magazine three times, and is the only person to have received this accolade more than once. In 2011, he landed the No. 10 spot in the Top 10 Bassists of All Time list by Rolling Stone, which wrote that when Wooten “busts out a solo at a concert, every jaw in the audience drops to the ground.” Victor Lemonte Wooten is the youngest of the five Wooten brothers. As part of a US Air Force family, it was during their years stationed in Hawaii that Victor began performing neighbourhood concerts with his brothers in their front yard. By the age of 6, he was an integral member of The Wooten Brothers Band. They performed in nightclubs and theatres, and toured as the opening band for soul legend

54

Curtis Mayfield—with Victor affectionately known as “the 8-year-old Bass Ace”. Although Wooten has been inspired by his bass mentors Stanley Clarke, Larry Graham and Bootsy Collins, he acknowledges that his brothers and parents have been his main influences. Over the years, he has recorded and performed with numerous jazz artists, and spearheaded the formation of the bass-guitar supergroup, SMV, with two of his childhood heroes: Stanley Clarke and Marcus Miller. In 1996, Wooten released his first solo project, A Show of Hands. With its groove and soul, it was voted one of the most important bass records of all time. To mark the 15th anniversary of this album, A Show of Hands 15 was produced in 2011—with remastered original songs and three previously unreleased bonus tracks. Wooten continues to record and tour with the Flecktones and various other artists, and also as a solo artist. He has self-published a novel, The Music Lesson: A Spiritual Search for Growth Through Music, and is a sought-after teacher and trainer of aspiring jazz musicians.

“The Best Jazz Player You’ve Never Heard” MARK TURNER is the masterful tenor saxophonist every contemporary jazz artist wants on their albums. With his distinctive tone and improvisational skills, as well as his innovative approach to composition, he has earned a far-reaching reputation. A profile by The New York Times described him as “The Best Jazz Player You’ve Never Heard”. The young Turner was intrigued by the history of jazz music and African-American culture. Changing from the clarinet to the sax in high school, he found an interest in studying the work of such saxophone giants as Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane. After graduating from Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music in 1990, he moved to New York where his talent was soon recognised. Between 1995 and 2001, Turner recorded five albums as leader while also performing as collaborator and sideman. He is a member of the trio Fly, the Gilad Hekselman’s Quartet and the Billy Hart Quartet. In 2014, he released Lathe of Heaven—his long-awaited solo offering as leader. AllAboutJazz.com says the album “manages to stir the soul as much as it challenges the mind”.

Legendary Ladies in Song Dorothy Masuka & Abigail Kubeka feat.

Lemmy “Special” Mabaso Dorothy Masuka and Abigail Kubeka are currently touring South Africa, but this special rendition featuring Lemmy Mabaso has been specially created for the Cape Town International Jazz Festival in 2016. Legendary jazz singer-songwriter DOROTHY MASUKA was born in Rhodesia, but received her schooling in South Africa. She rose to fame in the early 1950s after joining Philemon Magotsi’s Ink Spots at the age of 15. Refusing to return to school, she left for Zimbabwe where she joined the young jazz group, Golden Rhythm Crooners. On tour with the Harlem Swingsters and her jazz idol Dolly Rathebe in the mid-1950s, Masuka teamed up with Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba in the African Jazz and Variety travelling road show, and performed in the South African Broadway-style musical King Kong, which also toured London. She became known for her mbira music—a fusion of swing and Zulu melodies. At 16, she was

Who’s Who 2016

well into writing beautiful songs such as “Hamba Notsokolo”, her personal favourite. It was one of the biggest South African hits of the 1950s, and was used in major Hollywood films such as Cry, The Beloved Country. Masuka’s earlier works were mostly political commentaries. One such song, “Dr Malan”, landed her in trouble with the apartheid government, who destroyed every copy of the song and forced her into exile for more than 31 years—in Zimbabwe and in Zambia, where she later settled. Since then her songs have been more poetic than political. This consummate artist and performer was awarded the South African Presidency’s Order of Ikhamanga in Silver in 2006 for her “excellent achievement in and contribution to music composition and performance”. Multi-award winning ABIGAIL KUBEKA is an adored singer, songwriter and musical arranger, known primarily for her cabaret performances. One of the youngest of the top artists of the

1950s, Abigail was discovered at the age of 16 by Miriam Makeba and soon joined this acclaimed singer’s all-girl group, The Skylarks. It was through this association that Kubeka got a part in the hit Broadway-style musical, King Kong; she took over the leading role for three weeks when Makeba fell ill. Kubeka appeared alongside other big stars including Eartha Kitt, Sarah Vaughn and Percy Sledge in venues across Africa, Europe and Asia. She later joined the Malombo Jazz Makers, the Elite Swingers, and the Jazz Dazzlers. Performing in all the top venues in and around Johannesburg, she fell in love with the clubs in Hillbrow of the 1960s. Here she rubbed shoulders with musical giants such as Dollar Brand (later Abdullah Ibrahim) and Kippie Moeketsi during cabaret performances. Kubeka has received several awards including a Woman of Our Time Award in 1986 and, like Masuka, the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver in 2006. LEMMY “SPECIAL” MABASO was born in 1946 in Alexandra township; he and his brothers plus three friends formed the Alexandra Junior Bright Boys—a pennywhistle kwela group accompanied by string-bass and guitar. They would play on the streets of Joburg for tips, and it was here that Lemmy “Special” was discovered by recording scouts, at the age of 10. He became an overnight sensation, performing in acclaimed stage shows such as King Kong. Lemmy Hit Parade No. 1 was released in 1962, and he also appeared on two kwela compilations. Mabaso has been acknowledged as the uncrowned king of the early jazz/jive South African penny whistlers of the late ‘50s and early ‘60s. Due to the decline in popularity of kwela, however, he became a session musician and changed to the saxophone—playing on many mbaqanga jazz records and forming his own band, The Down-Beats.

Who’s Who 2016

For more than 20 years, DR VICTOR (Victor Khojane) has been crafting and creating an uplifting, up-tempo sound that has earned him an enviable reputation in the South African music scene and many devoted fans all over the world. He began playing while he was still at school, mainly influenced by Afro-pop stars like Blondie & Papa, and American pop acts like The Jackson 5. In 1991, he and THE RASTA REBELS recorded their first pop reggae album, a tribute to Eddy Grant. Thereafter, they changed their name to Dr Victor & The Rasta Rebels and specialised in dance numbers fed by traditional rhythms and a strong affinity for American R&B and Jamaican reggae. Since then, a number of their tracks have become instant hits, some of which are still popular today: “Shambala”, “If You Wanna Be Happy”, their popular cover of Eddy Grant’s “Gimme Hope, Jo’Anna” and “I Love To Truck”, which all appear on their Greatest Hits album. The band also recorded their first live DVD, Dr Victor & The Rasta Rebels: Live at Emperors Palace, which was nominated for a South African Music Award in 2011 for Best Multi-artist Live DVD. Dr Victor & The Rasta Rebels have cemented themselves as one of the top-performing bands in South Africa. There is no doubt they will have you moving to their infectious beats at this year’s Cape Town International Jazz Festival.

Theo Kgosinkwe and Nhlanhla Nciza are MAFIKIZOLO, one of South Africa’s favourite pop outfits and three-time winner of the South African Music Award for Group of the Year. They have grown in leaps and bounds since their best-selling 2000 album, Gate Crashers, which was released in the United States, Europe and Asia. Apart from performing in the US, they have got crowds in London moving to their infectious Afro-pop, kwela and marabi beats. Having been in the industry since their debut self-titled album was released in 1997, Mafikizolo took time out after the tragic death of one of their band members, Tebza, to refocus their energy and creative talent. Their new album, Six Mabone, is a treat for both young and old—criss-crossing a musical heritage from the past and updated with sounds and lyrics of today. “In the ‘60s, the Six

Mabone had the same status as a BMW today. And our music is enjoyed by the young and the old. We are taking our fans back and forth,” explains Kgosinkwe. It features blues and swings elements, with most of the songs having been recorded with a live band. A highlight is the remake of Miriam Makeba’s classic, “Walila”. Joining Mafikizolo on stage at the 17th Cape Town International Jazz Festival will be the legendary “Village Pope” TSEPO TSHOLA. Born in Lesotho, he grew up in a musical family. His gravelly baritone voice has been entertaining music fans since the 1970s. From previous albums that delved into sociopolitical issues, Tshola’s lyrics have become deeply personal and wholesome. His collaboration with Mafikizolo is set to be a masterful musical storytelling session.

“Nathi sings with such profound sincerity that it’s just so hard not to want to work with him.”—Vusi Nova

Growing up in poverty in the Eastern Cape, Nkosinathi Mankayi turned his attentions to the arts—singing, songwriting, sculpting and fine art. With no formal musical training, in 2012 he won a small regional talent search competition. This would be the beginning of great things for the artist who now calls himself simply NATHI. He used part of the prize money to buy a guitar and taught himself how to play. With his newfound instrumental talent, a bit of recognition from the competition and the guidance of Afro-pop duo, Jaziel Brothers, Nathi started writing songs inspired by his past. This formed the basis of his debut album, Buyelekhaya. The record went double-platinum within a few months of its release and racked up an impressive number of downloads on iTunes. With its combination of R&B, gospel and soul, Buyelekhaya has been described as captivating and moving, raw and unique, meaningful and authentic. Nathi says it is “love” that best describes his music. “All of the songs are about the love that I have experienced over the years—and I am just sharing that with the world.”

It was through their music managers that Nathi and the equally talented R&B/soul singer VUSI NOVA (Vusumzi Nongxa) met, which led to their collaboration on “Noma Kanjani”—a rendition of the Brenda Fassie hit. “Nathi sings with such profound sincerity that it’s just so hard not to want to work with him. He’s authentic!” said the Port Elizabeth-born Nova. Vusi himself is a multi-award nominated and highly accomplished artist, inspired by Ringo Madlingozi, Brenda Fassie, Marvin Gaye—as well as his mother and grandmother. His first album, Ndimfumene, did not do as well as hoped; he went back to the drawing board and spent three years in vocal training with award-winning vocalist and songwriter, RJ Benjamin. And it paid off: His follow-up album, Walk Into Light, included his remake of the Etta James classic, “I’d Rather Go Blind”—which made South Africans sit up and listen. Nova has shared the stage with such stars as Femi Kuti, Kenny Lattimore, James Ingram and Johnny Gill. He hopes one day to collaborate with the king of R&B, R. Kelly, and to win a Grammy. “I want to be known as one of the best vocalists who ever lived.”

“I believe music [itself] is my first language,” says Makhathini.

Hailing from the small town of uMgungundlovu near Pietermaritzburg, the award-winning jazz pianist NDUDUZO MAKHATHINI was greatly influenced by his musical family. “I only discovered later that my mom had been teaching me. She believed music was a language; a way of communication,” he says. It was after high school that he started studying jazz piano. In 2006, Makhathini performed with the band, Voice. Thereafter he toured Europe with internationally acclaimed Simphiwe Dana, and performed at the Avo Session Basel Jazz Festival. In 2008, he toured the United States and Europe as part of jazz saxophonist Zim Ngqawana’s Zimology Quartet. The following year, he also performed with Carlo Mombelli’s quartet. The 2015 Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz has also produced highly lauded albums for a number of esteemed South African jazz artists. Mother Tongue (which was nominated for Best Jazz Album at the 2015 SAMAs) is about Zulu and its traditions, and how his mother taught him music even before words. “I believe music [itself] is my first language,” he says. His latest album, Listening To The Ground, is a

musical tribute to the African soil that has produced so much life—the Aphanzi ancestors, or the “ones from the ground”, he explains. A world-class flute player, a fine composer and an inspiring bandleader—that is how The Times UK has described British jazz flautist EDDIE PARKER. His work spans a large range of styles, from contemporary to pop to jazz to synth exotica. In a career spanning four decades, he has performed at most of the significant venues in the UK and internationally, and has made many recordings, radio and television appearances, and had his music featured on various film soundtracks. Parker was a founder member of and an important composer for Loose Tubes, the legendary UK 1980s big band. He was also a key member of the Bheki Mseleku Band, and featured as a soloist and composer in Django Bates’s jazz orchestra, Delightful Precipice. Thandi Ntuli THANDI NTULI began playing piano at the tender age of 4, influenced by her musical family to listen to and appreciate music of various genres. She played classical piano at school, “but at some point, I just got bored of practising the same songs,” she says. “I was more interested in writing my own music. I would start playing around with songs and writing lyrics.” After exploring her musical range during a gap year in Europe, Ntuli decided to pursue a career as a professional musician. She went on to graduate with a first-class BMus degree in Jazz Performance from the University of Cape Town, and was offered a scholarship to the highly respected Berklee College of Music in Boston in 2008. Along with her soulful piano improvisations, her voice takes one on a rousing journey through Afro-jazz, American bebop and gospel spiritual melodies—comparable to the likes of Bheki Mseleku, whom she counts as a great influence. Ntuli first performed as a supporting artist with South African artists such as Judith Sephuma and Jimmy Dludlu, as well as international acts like British jazz/soul singer Zara McFarlane, American vocalist Lady Alma, and New York steelpan player Andy Narell. She also co-founded the electronic group, Deluge, with saxophonist Sisonke Xonti. She launched her solo career in 2014 with the album, The Offering, for which she wrote and arranged all the songs. Her talent has not gone unnoticed. In 2015, she won a Mbokodo Award in the category Women in Jazz; and was nominated for a MetroFM Music Award for Best Urban Jazz and an ImpACT Award for Music & Singing from the Arts & Culture Trust.

Cape Flats slang.

In 2001, the four-man crew of DRIEMANSKAP came together in the township of Gugulethu and have gone from strength to strength, driving crowds crazy with their high-energy performances. El Nino, Ma-B, Redondo and Dla have toured all over South Africa, taking their music to the people—at park jams and community gigs, as well as major corporate events and festivals. Driemanskap is part of the new generation of proudly South African hip hop artists who understand that this genre is more than a musical art form. They are one of the pioneers of the Spaza movement, representing Cape Town with a rhyme style that combines their mother tongue, isiXhosa, with English and Cape Flats slang.

Their videos are always on heavy rotation on Channel O, MTV Bass and Trace. Their breakout street anthem, “S’phum’eGugs”, was No. 1 for over a month on 5FM’s former Hip Hop Power Nights chart. The group takes pride in having shared the stage with local and international heavyweights such as Alicia Keys, Kendrick Lamar, Ifani (with whom they released a single in 2014), Simphiwe Dana and Cassper Nyovest, among others. After releasing their debut album, Igqabhukil’ Inyongo, and two mixtapes—Battle of Gugulethu Vol. 1 and Battle of Gugulethu Vol. 2—the crew dropped the highly anticipated Journey of a Soldier in September 2015, which reached the No. 2 spot on the iTunes Chart for hip hop albums in the first four days.

Widely regarded as one of the most innovative and gifted electronic artists to emerge from South Africa, Pietermaritzburg-born FELIX LABAND has toured extensively around the country and abroad, garnering international acclaim for his evocative, quirky, oceanic electronica. His works sample classical, jazz and old television recordings overlaid with instrumental performances by himself and guest artists. Laband’s first album, Thin Shoes In June, broke new ground for electronic music in this country. It was followed by the dark and beautiful 4/4 Down The Stairs, and Dark Days Exit—an interesting blend of Latin, ambient, folk and

lounge. The latter is still described as one of the greatest electronic music productions from South Africa. After a 10-year hiatus, Laband released Deaf Safari, which has also received high praise. He has described the album as “an audio collage of subjects that speak of the world I live in”— with sample recordings from the media, inspired by kwaito house and American roots music. Fellow South African, guitar virtuoso Derek Gripper (see his bio on page 111), will join Laband onstage during the 17th Cape Town International Jazz Festival, in what is sure to be an electric collaboration of sound.

Mbambisa’s

A man of few words, Mbambisa has always preferred to let the piano keys do the talking. TETE MBAMBISA is a gifted pianist and composer whose achievements have been largely hidden from our musical history—even though he has been active in the SA jazz scene since the 1950s. He is one of a handful of musicians who have played with the three jazz generations of the last 50 years, retaining his unique sound and inventive piano-playing style. Before the age of 10, he taught himself how to play, practising on the piano his mother had placed in her modest shebeen in East London—under the guidance of the resident pianist, “an old man called Langa”, he recalls. Listening to his brother’s records, he was influenced by American greats such as Frank Sinatra, Louis Jordan and The Four Freshmen. A man of few words, Mbambisa has always preferred to let the piano keys do the talking. He joined The Jazz Giants in 1961, delighting audiences in Cape Town and Joburg with their progressive jazz and kwela. By the end of the 1960s, he had also performed with the Ronnie Beer Quintet, the Spirits Rejoice band and The Soul Jazzmen. Mbambisa has been the name behind many of the country’s best jazz artists, writing compositions and arrangements. His work as a pianist, vocalist, composer and arranger can be found on many anthologies of South African jazz. In the middle of the 1976 uprising, Mbambisa recorded the big-band album, Tete’s Big Sound, with an octet. A subtle mix of African and American jazz, the funereal song “Black Heroes” was one of the biggest hits to emerge from the South African jazz scene of the ‘70s, and was dedicated to three great Black Heroes of the Struggle: Walter Sisulu, Oliver Tambo and Nelson Mandela. Black Heroes is also the title he gave to his 2012 solo piano album. It carries two versions of the melody, which Mbambisa is excited to share with his fans at this year’s Cape Town International Jazz Festival.

The chemistry between Khuli Chana and MuZart will appeal to both youthful and mature audiences.

Bring a locally and internationally award-winning hip hop artist together on stage with a SAMAnominated pop sensation, and the result is a dynamic fusion of talent. The chemistry between Khuli Chana and MuZart will appeal to both a youthful and mature audience. The chart-topping MUZART—comprising Tshegofatso “Tazzy” Lehutso, Refentse Victory “Vic” Chauke and actress/singer Rorisang “Rori” Thandekiso—will have the 2016 Cape Town International Jazz Festival smiling with their truly uplifting sound. House, jazz, pop, gospel and soul—it’s a celebration of life and love. “Some refer to it as nu jazz, rhythmic soul or acid jazz/ lounge. But we would rather not label it, because it’s quite experimental,” says Lehutso. Even before the release of their self-titled debut album, MuZart performed with some of South Africa’s biggest stars including AKA, Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse, HHP and The Muffinz, among others. Singer-songwriter and motswako rapper KHULI CHANA (Khulani Morule) brings a distinct flavour and sound to hip hop. Motswako encompasses elements from various musical backgrounds, with lyrics in Setswana, English and other vernacular languages—which Chana calls “Tswenglish”.

Who’s Who 2016

For his highly anticipated second production, Echoes From Louwskloof, Alexander took inspiration from Mamre and its jazz community—

“inspired by people, for people”.

RAMON ALEXANDER spent his childhood in Mamre, listening to hymns in church and Khoisan music in his community. It was only when he and his brother moved with their mother to Mossel Bay that he began classical piano lessons at the age of 10. While studying, he formed his own ensemble called ESP. He began writing original songs for the group, and in 2004 composed seven of the 12 tracks for their first album. Since then, the talented pianist has built a solid reputation in the Cape Town jazz scene. He has long been interested in the Cape music that originated with the Khoi people and the slavery of the Cape Malays—the so-called ghoema jazz. Thanks in part to the tutelage of Merton Barrow at the Jazz Workshop, Alexander gained a spot with The Cape Jazz Band, which plays historic and modern Cape-composed music. On their 2013 album, Cape Jazz Series Vol. 4 / Musical Democracy, he rubbed shoulders with legends such as Errol Dyers, Tony Cedras, Mark Fransman and Kyle Shepherd. Alexander has also produced two of his own jazz albums. For his highly anticipated second production, Echoes From Louwskloof, he took inspiration from Mamre and its jazz community— “inspired by people, for people”.

Who’s Who 2016

The exquisite song craft, thrilling electric blues guitar, and magical interplay of their two voices are just some of the instantly recognisable trademarks of this Grammy-nominated duo.

AMADOU BAGAYOKO and MARIAM DOUMBIA are a Grammy Award–nominated husband-and-wife duo who have enthralled audiences since getting together in 1983. They met in 1977 while attending the Institute for Young Blind in Bamako, Mali. Their joint autobiography, Away From The Light, published in June 2010, tells the story of those early years. Sou ni tilé, their first album recorded outside Africa, appeared in 1998 and went on to sell 100 000 units. Each new album since has found the duo boldly moving forward and breaking fresh ground, while at the same time preserving their instantly recognisable trademarks: the exquisite song craft, Amadou’s thrilling electric blues guitar, and the magical interplay of their two voices.

Who’s Who 2016

Their transition from world music stages to rock festival headliners came with their Manu Chao–produced Dimanche à Bamako—one of the best-selling African albums of all time—winning a prestigious Les Victoires de la Musique award and two BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music. In recent years, Amadou and Mariam have toured with Coldplay and U2, among others. In 2006, they recorded the official anthem for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, “Celebrate The Day”, and appeared on FIFA’s Kick-Off Celebration TV special for the 2010 World Cup hosted by South Africa. Amadou and Mariam have also worked with some of the most innovative names in contemporary rock music via Africa Express and other cross-cultural projects such as L’Afrique C’est Chic. Welcome to Mali was one of the most acclaimed recordings of 2009, and featured contributions from Albarn, K’Naan and Keziah Jones. The duo’s latest album released in 2012, Folila, means ‘music’ in Bambara and is a tale of how two records became one. Amadou and Mariam combined two recordings in a seamless, organic fashion. The result was a near-perfect example of how tradition and modernity can work together to generate creative forward movement.

Influenced by the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, The Fugees and Jill Scott, her sparkling sounds and unexpected covers of classics such as Busta Rhymes’s “Woo Hah!” have dazzled audiences around the world. Artists such as Mos Def, Angie Stone and The Pharcyde have also been enamoured by her unique sound. Dana says it was her “mirror” who had first told her she could sing. “Then one day, my mom heard me and said, ‘Pas mal’ (not so bad).” Her

mother then entered her in a talent show, where the 5-year-old Laëtitia sang a Creole song with lots of whooping and rhythms, she recalls. Coming from a humble background, she had to seek employment after finishing school and saved enough money to establish her label, Fresh Records. She produced CDs on her own, using money she made from live performances. After a few months, Dana released her debut album, Iboga. “It’s important for me that, at the end of each of my songs, people in the audience have a smile on their face,” she says.

With his extraordinary virtuosity and range, drummer TUMI MOGOROSI is building a solid reputation among the new crop of young South African jazz musicians. He started playing the guitar at the age of 12, but later opted for the drum as his instrument of choice. “The drum is such a central feature of African spirituality,” he says. Having received numerous accolades thus far, Mogorosi has already performed alongside prominent jazz musicians including international greats such as trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, and saxophonists David Murray and Ernest Dawkins. Mogorosi’s debut album, Project Elo, has been lauded as one of the best jazz albums to come out of South Africa in recent years, thanks to his fresh and bold offering as a composer and leader. The album gained fans

around the world after tours in the UK and France. Project Elo was also re-released in London by Jazzman Records. “Elo” stands for Elohim: a Hebrew name for God, but which can also refer to angelic presences that dwell among humans—which the artist has taken as a symbol for accomplished human beings. The album was recorded live in studio with Mogorosi, his sextet and a quartet of choral singers. Nominated for a SAMA in 2014 for Best Jazz Album, Project Elo has been described as a “concept CD” with a purposely crafted narrative that runs throughout the suitelike collection of compositions. Mogorosi brings the spiritual jazz of Project Elo to the 17th Cape Town International Jazz Festival to entrance audiences with his enduring sound.

PHISHING. WHAT IT IS AND HOW TO AVOID IT.

HISHING is a method of deceitfully obtaining personal information such as passwords, identity numbers and credit card details, by sending e-mails that look like they come from trusted sources, such as banks or legitimate companies.

Modus Operandi Phishing emails request that users click on a link in the email which will direct users to a “spoofed” website - a site designed to deceive users into thinking that it is legitimate - to obtain, verify or update contact details or other personal information. The spoofed website could be identical to that of a well-known financial institution. Phishing emails, which are a form of spam emails, are typically sent in large numbers to email account users. The criminals forward phishing mails with the hope that recipients will disclose their personal information. All it takes is a few deceived individuals to make phishing a profitable business for cybercriminals.

Here are some tips to follow to avoid being a phishing victim: Don’t click on links or icons in unsolicited e-mails, or reply to them. Delete them immediately. Check that you are on your bank’s real site before using any personal information. If you think you’ve been compromised, contact your bank immediately. Create complicated passwords that are not easy to decipher and change them often.

Don’t believe the content of unsolicited e-mails blindly, rather use your own contact details to contact the sender to confirm. Do ot open attachments from unknown senders as it could contain malware which has the ability to retrieve personal data from your device.

Luc Vermeer and Sebastiano Zanasi, together known as CHRISTIAN TIGER SCHOOL, are an electronic duo from Cape Town. While their name is random, they share a love of electronic music and hip hop, having developed a sound described as “dream-hop chill-wave psychedelia” which matches their distinctive personalities. Their debut, Third Floor, is an LA Beat Scene–inspired album (unusually arranged syncopated beats and samples, often rooted in hip hop) that quickly established them as artists to watch. “They are the architects of beats that ooze through the speakers—tickling your ears, teleporting you on an aural journey,” wrote Tina George for the Cape Argus.

The pair have already grown to be dominant on the South African electronic music circuit, frequenting the festival and club scene as well as opening for a host of touring acts. In 2013, they took on their first US visit, collaborating with neo-soul singer Bilal and rap outfit, World’s Fair. The following year, they released Chrome Tapes, which took a new sonic direction—with house and techno integrated in their sound. Christian Tiger School are known for their unique live shows, with tables sprawled with gear and a refreshing production filled with swirling synthesisers and a laidback groove. The multi-talented, award-winning BOKANI DYER is a Gaborone-born pianist, composer and music producer whose dynamic compositions and mesmerising performances have given African jazz a new home on the world stage. “Jazz is a beautiful art form that allows for deep exploration through spontaneous creativity,” he says. Influenced by his father, musician Steve Dyer, and inspired by “the energy behind the music”, he took up formal piano studies at the age of 14. Winning a scholarship in the SAMRO Endowment for the National Arts piano competition allowed him to further his studies—spending three weeks in New York City being tutored by American jazz pianist and composer, Jason Moran. Dyer has won several awards since then, including the prestigious Standard Bank Young

104

Artist Award for Jazz in 2011. The Mail & Guardian noted, “His is a strong, individual sound and an emblem of the rise of a new wave of contemporary South African jazz voices.” In 2014, Dyer enjoyed a sold-out tour of Europe—performing in Germany, Prague, London and Switzerland (with residency at the world-renowned Bird’s Eye Jazz Club in Basel). After his first two critically acclaimed albums, he released his third, World Music, in July 2015. From Bach to soul, from Duke Ellington to Zimbabwean mbira, no influence in his musical makeup has been left unexplored. Bokani Dyer will once again entertain a home crowd at the 2016 Cape Town International Jazz Festival, where his rich Afrocentric yet contemporary jazz sound will thrill all ears privileged to hear.

ELSIES RIVER HIGH SCHOOL boasts a rich cultural and arts history, being situated in a community with a vibrant music background. Musicians such as Camillo Lombard, Don Vino Prins and the late Robbie Jansen all hail from this area. Thus it’s no surprise that, despite not having a dedicated music department, the school has produced an award-winning jazz band (and a choir that has already won a number of prestigious accolades). The Department of Arts and Culture funded the establishment of the school band, with Lombard and Prins appointed as mentors. Their vast musical knowledge nurtured the band from their very humble beginnings as a community

Over the past few years of their existence, the band has expanded—not only in numbers and support but also in their repertoire (rhythm & blues and jazz). Being a regular attendant at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival’s training and development programmes has enabled the group to arrange and present their entertaining performances in a professional manner. The musical journey of DEREK GRIPPER began with the violin at the age of 6, after which he acquired a love of classical music and later the guitar. But it was when he met up with Cape Jazz trumpeter Alex van Heerden that he realised his previous studies could be used to find new directions for South African music. After a host of groundbreaking albums, Gripper began incorporating the music of other composers into his performances. He collaborated with Indian tabla master Udai Mazumdar, and had one of his pieces adapted by acclaimed string ensemble, the Kronos Quartet. As a celebrated acoustic guitarist, Gripper has played in festivals around the world, with a highlight being composing works for a 12-piece guitar orchestra featured at the Copenhagen Guitar Festival. He has had a long-time fascination with the works of Brazilian guitarist Egberto

112

Gismonti, whose music he transcribed for The Sound of Water which was nominated for a 2012 SA Music Award for Best Classical and Instrumental Album. Another project—to create an African repertoire for the classical guitar, based on transcriptions of works by some of the continent’s greatest musicians—has resulted in Gripper’s growing collection of arrangements of works by Toumani Diabaté, Ballaké Sissoko and South African umrubhe mouth-bow player Madosini Mpahleni, among others. In 2009, he began learning traditional Malian compositions on the kora (a long-necked harp lute), with which he produced the album One Night on Earth: Music from the Strings of Mali and his latest work, Libraries on Fire. Gripper’s music “leaves you feeling a little more than human, a little better than human,” wrote Chris Roper for the Mail & Guardian.

DISCOGRAPHY ■ Homecoming, 2015

Bassist and composer BENJAMIN JEPHTA is one of South Africa’s premier jazz double bass and electric bass players. He was introduced to music as a young child, accompanying his father—a worship leader in church—to rehearsals with his toy guitar. Growing up in Mitchells Plain on the Cape Flats, he attended Muizenberg High School where he fostered a love for jazz under the mentorship of esteemed jazz educator, Fred Kuit. A 2013 graduate of the jazz programme at the prestigious South African College of Music at the University of Cape Town, Jephta was awarded the fourth-year class medal. He has become an in-demand bassist, performing with a range of local and international musicians, and is a regular at The Orbit jazz club in Braamfontein. Aside from appearing in venues and festivals locally since the age of 15, he has performed with orchestras and small ensembles in the rest of Africa, Europe and Asia.

120

Jephta is involved in various original projects, ranging from playing double bass in a free jazz orchestra to playing synth bass in a pop band. He currently spearheads two projects that play his original material: a six-piece African/fusion/ funk project called Tribe of Benjamin, and his acoustic quintet who play music drawing on gospel and South African roots. The Benjamin Jephta Quintet—with Kyle Shepherd, Marcus Wyatt, Sisonke Xonti and Sphelelo Mazibuko—released their debut album, Homecoming, in January 2015. Revered jazz journalist Gwen Ansell wrote that on this release, Jephta “displays a gift for lyrical melodies that are strikingly memorable”. Jephta explained: “I want to give the listener a musical biography of my life by using the harmonies and melodies associated with [my] upbringing. As an artist, I believe one should create music that is significant firstly to [yourself].”

Having fused Indian classical music with various genres such as new age, jazz and electronica, award-winning santoor player RAHUL SHARMA has transformed the 100-stringed instrument into something quite special. He started off playing the keyboard and the harmonium, but it was only at the age of 13 that he learnt to play the Kashmiri santoor from his father, Shivkumar Sharma—a music legend in India. By 1996, the young Sharma was performing in concerts. It was in 2000 that people started taking note of the then 27-year-old santoor player. As part of a trio of classical musicians from northern India, Sharma took the stage at the MITO SettembreMusica festival in Turin to perform a “Music From the Himalayas” concert. It was later recorded as an album—one of more than 60 on which Sharma has appeared to date. He has also released a number of solo albums and ones in collaboration with his father. His latest offering, Dreams—A Fantasy World, is a thematic new-age album for which Sharma

used his father’s rare Iranian santoor, which creates a more psychedelic feel, he says. Eclectic saxophonist GEORGE BROOKS is the perfect accompanying artist to Rahul Sharma, as he is acclaimed for successfully bridging the worlds of jazz and Indian classical music. He has been hailed as the leading voice in Indian jazz fusion. Born in New York City, Brooks began studying jazz with saxophonist Frank Foster. This was followed by a Bachelor of Music degree at the New England Conservatory of Music; it was here that Brooks was first introduced to, and got enamoured with, Indian classical music. He took two trips to the subcontinent in the 1980s, immersing himself in north Indian music, language and culture. His knowledge of the melodic mode, raga, has earned him great respect among many of India’s prominent artists. In 1996, Brooks released his debut album as leader, Lasting Impression, with virtuoso tabla player Zakir Hussain.

Fonseca artfully blends traditional acoustic sounds with electronica elements, paying homage to Cuba and its African roots.

World-renowned for his fusion of Latin jazz, urban music and African rhythms, Cuban-born pianist ROBERTO FONSECA began his career in the early 1990s, and is well on his way to becoming a force to be reckoned with as a creative bridge between the traditional and the new. By the time he was 14, he was fusing American jazz with traditional Cuban rhythms— drawing inspiration from Afro-Cuban music and jazz, as well as American funk and soul classics. The world was introduced to the 15-yearold Roberto when he appeared at the Havana International Jazz Plaza festival in 1991—and he has since been entrancing audiences with his magic and energy. AllAboutJazz.com has called him: “The worthy heir of Afro-Cuban jazz”. At the age of 21, Fonseca toured Italy with Cuban tenor Augusto Enríquez, and shortly

128

thereafter formed the group Temperamento. In 1998, the band released the album, En el Comienzo. Fonseca remained with the band for the next 15 years, but in that time also worked with various members of the famed Buena Vista Social Club and as support pianist for the great maestro Rubén González. He also released three solo albums in quick succession. His 2012 album, Yo—which is Spanish for “I” or “me”—was nominated for a 2014 Grammy. Fonseca artfully blends traditional acoustic sounds with electronica elements, paying homage to Cuba and its African roots. roberto SOLO fonseca is the title he has given to his very personal solo live shows. He brings this intimate format to audiences at the 17th Cape Town International Jazz Festival, to experience his music and his artistry.

Themba Mokoena “When I play music, I think about home,” says Mokoena. “There are no notes for me—anyone can play a note. I want to play Themba.” One of South Africa’s most talented and respected guitarists, THEMBA MOKOENA has been entertaining fans both young and old. Although he has performed mainly as a supporting act, he has contributed to furthering the careers of some of the country’s best jazz musicians including Jimmy Dludlu and Selaelo Selota. The young Themba was taught to play the guitar by an elder brother, and listened to jazz records with friends when he moved to Durban. He joined the bands Sobantu Strangers and Black Magic, and began performing professionally in the 1960s. In this golden era of South African jazz, he honed his skills in marabi, hard-bop jazz and writing his own lyrical melodies.

130

Mokoena later toured with Durban’s Expressions and moved to Johannesburg in the early ‘70s. Here, his deft guitar-playing caught the attention of Gibson Kente—known as the ‘Father of Black (Township) Theatre’—who hired him to perform in his plays. Mokoena also played at The Pelican, Soweto’s famous cabaret club. When interest in township soul and jazz began declining in the late ‘70s, he turned to being a session artist and shared the stage— at home and abroad—with other jazz greats such as Sibongile Khumalo, Hugh Masekela and the late George Lee Larnyoh, among others. “When I play music, I think about home,” says Mokoena. “There are no notes for me—anyone can play a note. I want to play Themba.”

Hicham Telmoudi “Come, let me show you my country,” is HICHAM TELMOUDI’s invitation to listeners to embark on an aural ‘escape’ to his homeland of Morocco, through the different rhythms of the country’s musical tradition. The passionate musician, composer and arranger is also a professor of violin at the Conservatory of Marrakech, and conductor of the Marrakech Orchestra. Since a very young age,Telmoudi felt attracted by art, and frequented several theatres where he discovered the magic of the stage and the world of music. After obtaining the highest qualifications in both Oriental and classical violin, he now weaves his own brand of magic with strings and bow— breathing new life into traditional Moroccan sounds. During residencies in the Middle East and

Europe, Telmoudi gained international exposure and rubbed shoulders with musical greats, enabling him to craft his musical identity. In 2012, he produced his first project, Taj Maroc, which is a masterful creation that moves from an exploration of the Indian origins of Moroccan/ North African music, to fusions of jazz and Arabic tunes; Latin and Moroccan pop; as well as Berber (using the stringed outar) and modern music. Following the success of Taj Maroc,Telmoudi once again showed his prowess with the strings with the release of Aji Nwerik Bladi: a musical journey from the north to the south of Morocco, incorporating folk songs and giving them a modern touch. With his compositions he evokes images of bivouacs in the Sahara, Marrakech weddings and the “White City” of Casablanca.

Ilhan Ersahin’s Istanbul Sessions Since 2008, ILHAN ERSAHIN’S ISTANBUL SESSIONS have been firing up stages around the globe—from New York to Istanbul, from Paris to São Paulo, from London to Skopje. It’s all instrumental, with only Ersahin’s mesmerising saxophone in the foreground. “We wanted to take instrumental music to a stand-up, dancing audience, without doing that through electronics—with just real playing,” he says. It all began at an art event in the Turkish port city, when Ersahin formed the Istanbul Sessions band with local bassist Alp Ersonmez, drummer Turgut Alp Bekoglu, and percussionist Izzet Kizil. What was intended to be a once-off performance was so well received that they toured Europe and America, and recorded an album in 2010 with French trumpeter, Erik Truffaz. “Hear this! Jazz has changed form,” is the revelation on the CD cover. Of Swedish–Turkish heritage, Ilhan Fredrik Ersahin was raised in Stockholm but has been based in New York City since 1990. Influenced by bands like Led Zeppelin and Rolling Stones as well as artists from his father’s homeland of Turkey, he gravitated toward ska, funk, punk and reggae and taught himself to play the saxophone during his teens. But it was his

job at the famous Sweet Basil Jazz Club in New York’s Greenwich Village that brought him into contact with sax masters and other legendary musicians. In 2002, Ersahin opened his own club, Nublu, in Manhattan; it soon became the go-to venue for musicians, DJs and hip hop turntablists with a love of jazz improvisation and urban street music. The late-night impromptu sessions became known as the “Nublu Sound”, and birthed multiple projects including Istanbul Sessions. With his unique style of jazz, Ersahin has created “a highly distinctive new sound that connects the dense modal funk of Miles Davis’s Agartha group with the dervish whirl of Turkish and Middle-Eastern melodies, and spikes it with a potent shot of dub electronics,” wrote the UK’s Jazzwise Magazine. The saxophone sounds like it was recorded in the Alps, or in the sweeping sand dunes and oases of the Middle East—evoking the glow of the Turkish metropolis. An Istanbul Session awaits.

“As a writer, Jenkins has a gift for poetic turns of phrase and clever wordplay, delivered with potent urgency.”

Mick Jenkins “If Chicago hip hop eccentric MICK JENKINS isn’t already on your radar, he will be soon,” writes Complex.com about this uniquely talented artist. Born in Alabama as Jayson Jenkins, he grew up on Chicago’s south side; this vibrant and diverse city—“with the type of people and experiences you’ll have here”—has influenced his music in so many different ways, he says. Jenkins counts Sade, Jill Scott and Prince as his major influences, but he is also a member of Free Nation: a hip hop group that promotes creative thought without being narrow-minded like the music industry’s “powers that be”. His first mixtape, Trees and Truths, with its acid jazz influences, was highly praised—particularly on the local Chicago scene. It has been described as his most lyrical body of work by far. According to online magazine Pitchfork, “His biggest strength as an artist is his pen: As a writer, Jenkins has a gift

138

for poetic turns of phrase and clever wordplay, delivered with potent urgency.” The Water[s] soon followed, centred around the idea of comparing water to life’s truths. Believed to be Jenkins’ breakout project, it garnered acclaim from both critics and fans. The mixtape was preceded by the release of the single, “Martyrs”, which juxtaposes harsh truths about society with its various underlying messages and subtle notions. In 2014, Jenkins performed on The Smokers’ Club World Wide Rollers Tour alongside rap legends Method Man and Redman, among others. The following year was quite busy, with Jenkins headlining two national tours with Kirk Knight and Joey Bada$$, and performing at a number of music festivals. His highly anticipated debut album, [T]he [H]ealing [C]omponent, will be released later in 2016.

Seeing the three deck masters mix, scratch, and cross music genres during sets gives live audiences a unique audiovisual experience.

Beatbangaz DJ E-20, DJ Azuhl and DJ Ready D make up the BEATBANGAZ: a pioneering African DJ collective with roots in Cape Town hip hop culture. After coming together in the early 1980s, they officially became a crew in 1999—making a statement against the gang violence that’s rife on the Cape Flats where they grew up. “Rather than gangbanging, we bang beats,” they say. Seeing the three deck masters mix, scratch, and cross music genres during sets gives live audiences a unique audiovisual experience. Known as “The Green-Eyed Scratch Bandit”, DJ E-20 combines old-school techniques with intricate scratch patterns, which has given rise to his unique style. He is also a founding member of well-known hip hop group, Brasse Vannie Kaap. Ricardo Nunes, aka DJ Azuhl, specialises in hip hop, but also moves crowds to his funk, soul, dub, house and rock beats. He has shared the stage with international hip hop icons such as Jay Z, Kanye West, Coolio and The Black Eyed Peas, among others.

140

Having started out in the ‘90s with Prophets of Da City—touring Europe extensively and performing alongside the likes of Public Enemy, the Fugees, Will Smith and Ice-T—Ready D has been rated among the top hip hop DJs in the world by various music publications. His regular slot on Good Hope FM, the “Ready D Show”, entertains listeners with thumping rhythms by top local and international hip hop artists, as well as the Beatbangaz themselves. Currently, the Beatbangaz are working on their first studio-produced album. “The influence of the Beatbangaz, as a collective and individually, cannot be measured across the African hip hop landscape. Pioneers in the field of hip hop deejaying, radio and television programming, youth developmental work, the dents they cause within and outside the South African entertainment and musical spectrum will be felt for years to come,” says Dr Adam Haupt, senior lecturer in Film & Media Studies at the University of Cape Town.

Lana Crowster espYoungLegend

A talented singer, composer and arranger from right here in Cape Town, LANA CROWSTER has already made a name for herself “with a voice that floats effortlessly between powerful and delicate, sensual and strong, longing and assertive”, wrote GQ Magazine. She began singing at a young age, and now boasts over 10 years’ experience wowing audiences around the country. Having become a sought-after backing singer and later a solo act—with her deft vocals running the gamut of jazz, neo-soul, R&B, house and hip hop—she regularly shares the stage with other top homegrown performers such as Toya Delazy, Arno Carstens and Craig de Sousa and has supported international superstars like Josh Groban and George Benson. She also performs with her band, LC[O], the Lana Crowster Originals.

Crowster released her debut EP, Seasons, in 2014; it’s a diverse collection of original material written by herself and which she describes as “a little bit of an introduction to who I am as an artist”. Co-produced by Bokani Dyer, the album features other up-and-coming South African jazz musicians. It was her musical and vocal prowess that led to Crowster being chosen as this year’s espYoungLegend and getting the opportunity to perform at the prestigious Cape Town International Jazz Festival. espYoungLegends is a new initiative to discover young, unsigned jazz talent, and offers these musicians a chance to showcase their talents to espAfrika audiences. “This multitalented young woman was a clear winner. Her vocals effortlessly and artistically mesmerised us [the judges] and will certainly do the same for the fans who watch her,” enthused festival director, Billy Domingo.

Music & Career rehearsals

Beyond the music Sustainable skills transfer initiatives of the CTIJF Training & Development Programme ESPAFRIKA STRIVES TO REINVENT ITSELF, ITS OFFERINGS AND OVERALL PUBLIC INTERACTION. This year, the Cape Town International Jazz Festival’s (CTIJF) most notable feature—the Training & Development Programme—has been given special attention. The prestigious programme of workshops, which reflect the dynamics of global standards in social cohesion and skills transfer, has affirmed the need for practical skills development. The programme currently boasts 14 workshops and two extended skills transfer initiatives that equate to more than 40 individual events spanning 10 weeks annually: before, during and after the CTIJF. More than 500 participants are exposed to a range of workshops and events. Even more programmes

are in the pipeline, which will see the Training & Development initiative extending its arm throughout the Western Cape to deliver a dose of Africa’s Grandest Gathering. The workshop line-up includes the foremost individuals within the music and entertainment industry; the likes of Cassandra Wilson, Sheila E., Alistair Andrews,Victor Wooten, Rahul Sharma, Tribute “Birdie” Mboweni, Driemanskap, BADBADNOTGOOD, Laëtitia Dana as well as legends Dorothy Masuka, Sam Mangwana, Dizu Plaatjies, Abigail Kubeka and Lemmy “Special” Mabaso. The Music Business workshops have attracted the attention of international industry leaders, all of whom are eager to add their brand of musical flavour to the panel. Workshops take place across the Western

Cape.Venues include the prestigious Artscape Theatre Complex on the Foreshore, Guga S’Thebe Arts & Cultural Centre in Langa, Cape Music Institute in Athlone, and Cape Sun Hotel in the CBD. MUSIC & CAREER PROGRAMME This programme is one of the most exciting on the Training & Development calendar this year. Workshops cater for school-going students from across the Western Cape, with attendees participating in various theory and practical courses over a four-week period. The modules are mirrored on industry standards and thematically refer to rehearsals, live performance and event production—all of which are presented by industry professionals and mentors, with the purpose of enforcing skills transfer and development. The programme includes a skills development course, stage etiquette and preparation as well as musical appreciation, and training is conducted in both musical and production elements. Each year, one school or group from the programme is selected to perform on the main stage at the CTIJF. In addition, an amalgamated group—consisting of members of each high school ensemble—has the opportunity to perform as an All-Star Band at the Free Community Concert held at Green Market Square. The highlight of the series of workshops is the live music performance at the Artscape Theatre. The Music & Career Programme is supported by the Western Cape Education Department and managed by the CTIJF Training & Development team consisting of Natana

Caluna (media liaison), Corinne Becker (administration) and Craig Parks (content). Participants hail from areas all over Cape Town, including the following schools: Elsies River High School, Steenberg High School, Steelband Project Western Cape, Alexander Sinton Secondary School, Langa High Music Project, Ocean View Music Academy, Chris Hani High School, Cedar High School of the Arts, Livingstone High School and Worcester High School. GIGS FOR KIDS Gigs for Kids is an exciting and interactive children’s show that introduces kids between 5 and 10 years old to the culture of music and dance. Since the event is highly specialised and controlled, attendance is limited. Invitations are extended to various orphanages and institutions that care for disadvantaged and underprivileged youngsters. This year’s theme is “Kiddy Hop”, a special combo of music and hip hop dance for the little ones. The energetic show, produced by Big Talk, is both entertaining and educational and aims to develop music appreciation, rhythm, co-ordination and musicality skills. Children are in for a treat as they enter the wonderful world of sounds, rhythm, beats, instruments and characterisation. workshop within the festival’s Training & Development programme. Participants are carefully selected, and cover units of study accredited by the South African Qualifications Authority. “Cover a Specialist Beat as a Journalist” is the programme’s calling card, which academically equates to the Level 5 National Certificate in Journalism. The course provides a workbook packed with useful tips and hints, as well as hands-on exercises offering practical guidance and feedback on tasks. Journalists, journalism cadets and interns from any medium wishing to improve their expertise in writing for the arts are encouraged to apply. Students have an opportunity to improve their skills, in addition to working and networking with seasoned journalists and media devotees. Certificates are presented to students upon completion of the course. Many graduates from the programme have become successful journalists, working across South Africa and other parts of the world. Please note that admission is reserved, and all applicants are subjected to a strict shortlisting process based on predetermined selection criteria. MENTORING ARTS JOURNALISM Experienced arts journalists, arts/lifestyle reporting team leaders and editors are targeted for this course. Senior workers in the music,

arts and heritage field, or music public relations officers responsible for guiding juniors are also encouraged to attend. “Training of Trainers” is the calling card of this programme that targets experienced arts journalists wanting to develop their coaching and mentoring skills in the newsroom. The programme—facilitated by Fiona Lloyd— is challenging, practical, experiential and fun. Most MAJ participants are employed full-time at various media organisations that include, but are not limited to: newspapers, magazines, television and radio. Some already mentor less experienced arts journalists, while others are being groomed to do so by their media organisations. The intensive seven-day process focuses on the challenges of teaching arts journalism in today’s multimedia landscape; identifying the key skills and qualities that arts journalists need; developing basic mentoring, coaching and facilitation skills for arts journalism training; as well as exploring participatory training methods, and discovering how these can build critical awareness, initiative and self-confidence in young journalists. The focus of the programme is to design coaching and mentoring strategies with clear and achievable aims and outcomes. Please note that admission is reserved, and all applicants are subjected to a strict short-listing process based on predetermined selection criteria.

Cape Music Institute workshop

PHOTOJOURNALISM WORKSHOP Photographers at any level wanting to explore how jazz music, photography and society interact, with a desire to develop a signature approach to making music images, are the ideal candidates for this course. This year, the course welcomes a new facilitator in the form of Caroline Mwangi, who is probably the only student to have completed all the media-related workshops offered by the CTIJF. She is a published photographer and lecturer with years of practical and teaching experience. The workshop focuses on the concepts of perspective, practice and the individual approach to photography rather than basic technical concern. In other words, technical realities will be the visual voice of the photographer. Participants are encouraged to explore a wider repertoire of possibilities outside the contested space of live-stage photography. Each participant presents a portfolio of jazz photographs taken at various festival activities, which serves as the assessment template upon which the quality improvement and development of the individual’s visual voice is evaluated. Some sessions are combined with the Arts Journalism course to explore and consolidate the relationship between words and images and the photographer/ journalist collaboration. The workshop uses

152

research and its relationship to pre-visualisation to complement the practical sessions. Please note that admission is reserved, and all applicants are subjected to a strict short-listing process based on predetermined selection criteria. MUSIC TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP This workshop explores the latest trends and innovations in smart-device technology and identifies the benefit of such devices to musicians and professionals within the music industry. It is an introduction to dynamic music education that showcases the latest tech-savvy tools used to improve on-stage and in-studio performance. The influence of the digital era has been cemented in our society, and the convergence of smart multifunctional devices has enforced this phenomenon. This theme relates to all workshops under the CTIJF Training & Development umbrella. This new focus brings forth ‘the winds of change’ and sees the programme setting sail on a new creative journey through the waves of technology and digital communication. The various workshops include live performances using state-of-the-art, high-tech instruments and equipment to contextualise the current music industry. The use of smart devices in music and education—and how to adhere to these changes within the digital space—are additional streams covered in the programme.

MEDIA STUDENTS The Media Student initiative is aimed at tertiary-level students from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology’s Media Department. Participants are both full- and part-time students, ranging in age, gender, race, background and cultural disposition. They work with a supervisor in the various fields of the festival. This initiative is accredited by the university and worked into the students’ formal academic programme. It weighs considerably toward their National Diploma (accredited by the Department of Higher Education) and forms part of their work-integrated learning programme that is aligned with their curriculum. Modules include training in media protocol, media management, media liaison; and introduce a practical understanding of the media industry and where public relations, media and marketing fit into the industry and the CTIJF respectively. Students are both academically and practically assessed on various outcomes, based on their time with the Marketing and Training & Development departments of the CTIJF. Media students work at the event’s press conferences and in the media centre on show nights. The students also engage with CTIJF audiences and the general public via social media, and write stories and biographies, do interviews, take photographs, as well as create, edit and publish videos to enhance their practical training in publicity. On show days, students get the opportunity to interact with high-level media and marketing professionals, plus performing artists. The programme provides students with an opportunity to learn from the best in the industry and actively participate in one of the top award-winning events in the world.

No Distractions! Three photographers reveal their personal perspectives and reflections on the CTIJF, without the periphery of a marketing brief or any other diversions THE DUOTONE PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION IS AS MUCH A PART OF THE FABRIC OF THE CAPE TOWN INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL (CTIJF) AS THE ARTISTS AND PERFORMANCES THEMSELVES. Since launching, Duotone has evolved from being a purely black-and-white photographic essay of jazz, to today’s eclectic, colourful, all-action and all-emotion-telling musical portraits. In 2016, the CTIJF and Duotone will show their respect to three of the official photographers who have walked—and in many instances, run—through the halls of the festival and who have been primarily focused on getting their shots for publicity or news purposes. Cindy Waxa and Johan Samuels have been the resident CTIJF photographers for many years. Capturing through their lenses the moving and colourful rich tapestry of artists who have graced the stages of Cape Town’s favourite festival, they will now share their personal perspectives and reflections as well as photographic wisdom with this year’s exhibition visitors. Also exhibiting is Gregory Franz, a former photographic workshop student and a relative newcomer to the CTIJF photo residency. Through his almost constant attendance and love affair with this festival, first as a fan and now as a member of the photographic team, Franz has learnt firsthand the subtle and sometimes complicated art of jazz photocomposition. His works span several years and will expertly narrate the story of live music performance as experienced at the CTIJF. Curated by the multi-award winning photographer Rashid Latiff, No Distractions! is a fascinating insight into the chronicles of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival as seen through the musicality lenses of these three working photographers who, for the first time, will reveal their personal photographic experiences—without the periphery of a

Who’s Who 2016

marketing brief or any other diversions. The exhibition is their take on the raw, honest and often thought-provoking performances of the artists, as well as the emotion of the fans who energise the whole production. Whether you are a die-hard jazz fan, an art lover or a humble Joe, the Duotone No Distractions! exhibition is a must-see experience. It is a musical anthology of impactful imagery that encapsulates the ebb and flow of art in life. Because their stories deserve to be shared, the Duotone exhibition has found a new home at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town. This location now makes it possible for the community at large to catch a glimpse into the annals of history and see just why the CTIJF is colloquially known as “Africa’s Grandest Gathering”. RASHID LATIFF – DUOTONE 2016 CURATOR Award-winning international photographer Rashid Latiff has spent his life behind the camera. Growing up, he was frequently on the road and in the wild with his parents, capturing the heartbeat of Africa. Thus in his early photographic career, he focused on wildlife photography—before being invited to try out his talent at live music events. The rest, as they say, is history. While Latiff continues to work up close and personal with his animal subjects in nature, he now also focuses on the challenge of low lighting at concerts. He understands the medium well and, in curating this exhibition, his expert eye will look for the best-lit objects as well as form, composition and the story being told. Latiff’s experience spans more than 35 years of film and photography in a variety of mediums. He has won several international awards and is regularly invited to exhibit his works around the world.

2016 EXHIBITORS CINDY WAXA Born in the Eastern Cape, Cindy Waxa has been a part of the CTIJF for the past 10 years. Her work has been published in a book, Women by Women, which celebrates 50 years of women’s photography in South Africa. She currently works for Independent Media as a regular photographer for the Cape Argus. Waxa studied photography at the former Peninsula Technikon, where she discovered her passion for documenting people’s lives—leading to peer recognition, being acknowledged as a finalist in the Standard Bank Sikuvile Awards in 2014 and winning a regional prize in the Vodacom Journalist of the Year Awards 2015 in the Photography category. Her keen interest in documentaries has led to a piece she calls her pride and joy: “Ritual Entry to Womanhood”, which was her Sikuvile Award entry. Other pieces of her work have been published on a number of occasions, including “10th Anniversary of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival and Jazz—A Female Perspective”. Waxa took part in the 20 Years of Democracy Exhibition held at the Artscape Theatre in 2014, but is now working toward a solo exhibition and publishing her own photographic book.

JOHAN SAMUELS A full-time, freelance professional photographer, Johan Samuels’s main focus is corporate, media and events photography. However, it is his innate creativity (he is both a musician and an incredible baker) and his dogged determination to be the best which have seen him haunting the halls of the CTIJF over the past eight years. Having resigned from full-time employment, armed with only a certificate in practical photography and his naturally engaging energy, Samuels plunged head first into the world of freelance photography—and has never looked back. Being a musician himself has enabled him to identify with the artists on stage, with their emotion, energy and engagement with the crowds. This has helped develop his photographic craft in working with and overcoming the challenges of being a photographer in the ever moving, vibrant world of concert photography.
