STRATEGIES TO STOPPING SENIORITIS Senioritis. It seems like a nonexistent disorder that is the scapegoat for all high school seniors when their procrastination hits its peak. As a survivor of it, however, I can assure you that senioritis is nothing to be joked about. It’s real, and the fact is inevitable that as seniors, you will get senioritis. Although many seniors currently view it as a lethal disease that limits their motivation, assignment completion, and class attendance, its effects can be mitigated with proper execution and planning. All of these tips and tricks may not be the cure, but they are all techniques that I found helped me to survive my senior year. Make a study time-- Sticking to a schedule from the beginning of the school year will make it easier to make time for studying and completing your homework. Schedules have been shown to increase productivity as well. Set aside at least an hour per night that is dedicated to homework. Try to keep this a consistent time throughout the school year. By doing this every night, you will be able to work on assignments in a short time frame and accomplish at least something every night. Create study groups-- When AP testing comes around in May, it can be very difficult to motivate yourself to actually study in order to be successful for your tests. By starting study groups at the beginning of the year, you’ll feel obligated to finish your work not only for yourself, but for the other group members who are relying on your contribution. Another helpful hint is to look at your prospective colleges and see what score you will need to pass the AP test. A lot of colleges accept 3’s, and 16 TROJAN HORSE
JUNE 2016
this can be easily obtained with optimal studying. Surround yourself with studiers-- When you surround yourself with slackers, it is easy to slip into their ways of life. This can be applicable in everyday school work or with more serious tasks such as studying for tests. Friends’ behavior is contagious, and it is a key indicator as to how you will do in school. By surrounding yourself with students who want to achieve, you too will feel motivated and will hopefully push through some of the pain that senioritis comes with. Make it a contest-- Place bets with your friends on who will do the best on the next AP Language and Composition vocabulary test. Whoever loses has to buy lunch. If you’re like me, losing is not an option due to my competitive nature. However, those who are not competitive also have an incentive to study with this strategy. By creating this competition, you will feel forced to study to save your wallet from suffering. Get The Cush-- When it is the beginning of the year and senioritis has not fully settled in, it is important to work hard in your classes to create a cushioned grade. With this cushion, you hopefully will be able to slack off a little later on and still maintain the grade you want. Do this at the beginning of second semester as well. Although it will be difficult, it will pay off in May when you do not want to do any assignments at all. Get Involved-- With a busy schedule, you will have to be more efficient with the limited time you have to com-
plete school work. In short, there is less time to procrastinate. By joining an after school activity like a sport, you have to really spend your time wisely in order to be successful in school. Also, sports force you to maintain a reasonable GPA, so your grades cannot drop too dramatically. Do Something-- Procrastination is the biggest problem when it comes to senioritis. This piece of advice may sound strange, but trust me, it helps. If your procrastination is getting so overwhelming that you cannot finish assignments, you should try to do at least some of the assignment. Most teachers will accept semi-complete work, and although you will not earn a perfect score, you will earn part of the points. Zeros really hurt grades, so any points are better than none at all.
mind and help you to be rejuvenated when you return to your work later. Accept that it will happen-- As a senior, it is too easy to say, “Oh that won’t be me.” It doesn’t work like that. You are not the exception. You WILL have senioritis. By denying that you will have it, you won’t be prepared when the disease overtakes you. If you prepare mentally for an event like this, just like with “The Big One,” you will be better prepared when disaster strikes. Or maybe just do nothing at all and hope for the best. I don’t care. There are barely any days left this year, and I can hardly summon the energy to care about my own academic well-being, let alone yours.
Don’t be too Hard on Yourself-- As many students learned in psychology, the self-fulfilling prophecy is real. If you believe that because you’re a senior you can’t do anything, it will come true. If you feel yourself beginning to slack off, give yourself a break, but set a timer and come back to your work. Don’t believe just because you’re a senior you have a get out of jail free pass when it comes to your homework. Teachers still have expectations. Celebrate your accomplishments-- When you complete an assignment or do well on a test, give yourself a break or reward yourself. Everyone needs a break at some point, so take time to go out with your friends after you’ve completed your homework. It will clear your
