What a privilege to interview this man of God, Rev. Emanuel Lipscomb, for the 20th anniversary of September 11 — a day from hell we never hoped to see.
During my interview with Rev. Lipscomb, a Baptist preacher, I heard his eyewitness account of the World Trade Center events. He heard the first plane hit the North Tower and saw the second plane fly into the South Tower. Here is his story:
Rev. Lipscomb traveled to New York weekly for an important nonprofit project as they helped the downtrodden. For that week's trip, he drove to New York, picked up a contact he had dropped off earlier, which happened to be right there at ground zero, directly across the street. He actually saw the plane hit the South Tower, and before fire, police and rescue workers arrived to clear the streets and to help get folks to safety, Rev. Lipscomb joined many other citizens in aiding thousands of fleeing people. Once the fire, rescue workers and police arrived, they created a taped off safe zone across the street from the South Tower.
Afterwards, Rev. Lipscomb continued in the help mode. He said he rushed inside that condo building to ask the man at the desk to call upstairs to the gentleman he dropped off earlier, asking him to hurry him downstairs. He realized the streets were becoming so crowded with people in the panic mode needing assistance.
Rev. Lipscomb and the others near him helped trapped people get out of the immediate area safely. Fire workers and police arrived to help, they put up police tape to keep everyone out, when suddenly, they heard a large boom! The tower was falling. Directly underneath the building, Rev. Lipscomb said he quickly turned after hearing the boom, his friend got hit, he saw a hole in the wall, and jumped inside. Everybody around him was dead or disintegrated. Gone!
Gray ash, a black chemical storm of fire, disintegrated bodies, jet fuel, concrete and building debris filled the air with a deathly silence, instantly at ground zero. Rev. Lipscomb stayed in the hole, held his breath, gasping for air, until he felt his way, step by step, touching stairs. This was his temporary refuge. He went down to the floor underneath the stairs, to try to get some air. As people around him were choking, he thought his life would end there.
A voice told him to go to the river, which was outside to the right. He screamed to everyone to go with him to the river as God had told him, so he ran half a block west, and was blessed to find a building that did not have the chemical cloud around it, so he ran inside. It felt a little safer, since they could breathe there. In the basement of that building were 120 people.
A baby was screaming and crying, and someone said, "What do we do?" Then someone said, "Sing." They all began to sing "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." A working TV presented them the opportunity to see the North Tower falling, and their building began to shake. "We thought we were gone again," Rev. Lipscomb said.
Covered in ash, like a snowman, he asked everyone to try to calm down. The attack was finally over!
Once they got outside, both buildings had fallen, and people in boats from New Jersey came to the edge of the river to help. They were saved, taken by boat into New Jersey. Rev. Lipscomb was hosed down with water and sent by ambulance to the hospital.
From his hospital, where he remained for two weeks, he could look over and see New York, burning, Treated by teams of doctors, Rev. Lipscomb had two strokes, several heart attacks, short-term memory loss. Today, he still suffers, 20 years later.
They stayed at Ground Zero, willing to sacrifice their lives for others. These were the heroes of the World Trade Center attack. Attacked directly by terrorists themselves, those who stayed to help stood together willing to fight so others could live.
Rev. Lipscomb closed by saying, "Together we Thank God for those who survived and those who stood face to face with danger in love for others. I thank God for saving my life to be a witness to one of the worst but greatest moments in our history."

Still, Ella, as she’s called by her stepmother and stepsisters, must overcome a world in which women are rebuked for having such dreams. Men still rule the world – or so they believe.
As for her stepmother, she wants to find a suitable match for Ella and get her out of her house.
Sounds a bit far-fetched for this tale that has survived for hundreds of years. But, I guess it makes sense given how far women have come in the 21st century.
Written and produced by Kay Cannon, the film stars singer Camila Cabello as the title character in her acting debut. Cabello, who has proven herself as a great singer, may want to take a few more acting lessons. She was adequate but not particularly exciting, except in the scenes in which she was required to dance.
The cast also includes Idina Menzel, the star from the Broadway hit musical, “Wicked,” who, like Cabello, has far greater talent as a vocalist than an actress. Other members of the cast include Minnie Driver, Nicolas Galitzine and Pierce Brosnan – that’s right James Bond, himself.
And while he’s only on screen for one scene, the enigmatic Billy Porter, in all of his “diva-like glory,” saves the day and this movie in his role as . . . you got it – the Fairy Godmother – also known as “Fairy G.”
Porter can act as he’s proven time and time again. And he has an amazing voice. But when you add his ability to deliver lines which both creatively and tastefully blur the distinctions between “godfather” and “godmother,” you can’t help but love him and the character he so effortlessly portrays.
Finally, like the cherry on top of a mouth-watering hot fudge sundae, when he breaks out in a version of the Earth, Wind and Fire classic, “Shining Star,” later joined by Cabello, it’s on and poppin.’ It’s without a doubt, one of the best scenes in the entire film.
Songs immortalized by Janet Jackson and Madonna also appear in the movie, mixed with other tunes that make them even more captivating. Yes, I’m still snapping my fingers!
As for the choreography and costumes, they’re so outstanding that in some respects, they serve as the glue that keeps the movie together. Just when there’s a lull in the action and the acting may be a bit disappointing, the pace picks up – from the villagers cutting a rug on the town square to a cadre of stylishly-dressed potential brides dancing to the Salt-N-Pepa/ En Vogue classic, “Whatta Man” in a serenade to the prince at the ball.
I liked this new version of Cinderella.
But I had to watch it a few times to both catch and appreciate the nuances while patiently overlooking the scenes in which the action slowed so much that I had time to throw some popcorn in the microwave. WI

BABYSITTING LED TO A TEACHING CAREER
Babysitting her younger cousins led Kori Edwards into the teaching profession. After graduating from DuVal High School in Prince George’s, she earned an early childhood degree at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro. In December, she’ll receive a master’s degree from Trinity Washington University in Northeast.
The 27-year-old educator of District Heights said the county encourages teachers to achieve additional education including master’s degrees, fellowships and other certifications.
But COVID-19 has “completely” impacted the teaching profession.
“With the coronavirus, technology has been implemented in every classroom and you won’t find any classroom in the county without it,” said Edwards, who enters her third year at Capitol Heights teaching second-grade TAG math and science. “That’s been the biggest change in education.”
Through virtual learning last school year, she witnessed children help their parents use various technology tools and devices.
She remembers being a second-grade student in D.C. when the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks shocked the nation 20 years ago.
“Everything changed after that point with safety drills,” she said.
As part of her science instruction, COVID-19 will be integrated to highlight the importance of washing hands, covering mouths when sneezing or coughing and maintaining social distances to avoid spreading germs. Each student will have their own math blocks, cards and other materials.
She believes in-person instruction remains an additional need, especially for elementary students. She’s scheduled to have an average of 21 students in her two classes.
“Going through virtual learning, I could tell they need that social and emotional piece of being around their friends and other people,” she said. “It’s an important factor . . . to know how to share, talk, sit and eat lunch and play. These things you can’t learn behind a screen.”
WI @jabariwill officers had broken the law when they used force on McClain.
The subsequent George Floyd arrested on May 25, 2020 changed the social climate both nationally and internationally. It brought about a heightened level of attention, scrutiny and protest in regards to all unjust deaths of Black citizens at the hands of law enforcement. Attention, scrutiny and protest prompted Gov. Jared Polis (D) to have Attorney General Weiser open a criminal investigation in the McClain case. For with-

and the devices necessary to receive adequate remote instruction. This "homework gap" affects one in three Black, Latino, and American Indian Alaska Native students.
The effects on inequality have been stark. Research released last month showed students in majority Black or Hispanic schools ended the school year six months behind where they normally would have been in math, compared with four months for white students. Students in low-income schools were seven months behind. "Put simply, the students who could least afford to lose ground relative to other students are those who were the most impacted," wrote the authors of a similar report that reached the same conclusions.

is time for new leadership at the city's DHS.
In particular, African Americans, Latinx Americans and other people of color are disproportionately, devastatingly affected by COVID-19 and are also disproportionately entrapped with homelessness across America. The New York City homeless rates are at the tipping point of this growing national problem.
Consider how the city dealt with homeless people living in street "encampments" during the pandemic. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned localities not to clear homeless encampments if emergency shelter is unavailable, arguing that dispersing the homeless people "increases the potential for infectious disease spread" and interrupts any connections they have with local service providers. But during the pandemic, the city nearly doubled the number of encampments and other places that homeless people used to sleep, according to published reports.
The bungling does not end there. The city was also behind plans to house homeless individuals in hotels during the pandemic only to boot them back on the street amid the rise of the highly contagious Delta variant. And the city's policies have allowed our subway system to become inundated with homeless people looking for safe, warm places to sleep.
The pandemic may have exacerbated these issues, but it certainly did not start them. A report last year from city Comptroller Scott Stringer's office clearly laid out the poor conditions that have been allowed to take hold in the city's shelters in recent years.
Of the 91 individual units at shelters examined by inspectors, 92% had at least one violation and over a third — 32 units — had four or more violations. Overall, auditors found 264 deficiencies, including missing or broken window guards, ramshackle cribs, babies living in shelters with vermin infestations, exposed electrical outlets, and mold and mildew growth.
No one person, of course, should be held entirely responsible for the failures of a system as vast as New York City's Department of Homeless Services. But the buck ultimately stops with the person at the top, and in this case it's Banks. Even The New York Times, after praising Banks in 2015, wrote a critical piece just a year later lambasting the DHS chief
out those protests, it is unlikely the three officers and two paramedics would have been indicated.
Indictments are not enough in wrongful deaths — we need convictions. Convictions are not enough — we need sentencing with teeth. The murder conviction of Derek Chauvin resulting in a 22½ year sentence in the George Floyd death case should be a statement to those in law enforcement concerning the changing social climate of accountability. We need a strong conviction and sentencing in the Elijah McClain case to reinforce that state-
the report, offered several policy recommendations to support students' health and well-being while at the same time expanding access to excellent educational opportunities. These include: • Re-engage for all students, with a focus on historically underserved students. • Continue to support access to remote learning technology for students and families. • Attend to physical, social, and mental health needs of students and families. • Measure student progress, rethink assessment systems, and use data to support recovery. • Support and train teachers and leaders. • Move from restarting to reimagining accountability and school improvement.
None of these goals are served by endangering the health and safety of students and their families ment. This case shows that paramedics should also take note.
Now, we see that the former Georgia District Attorney in the Ahmaud Arbery case has been indicted. Jackie Johnson was just indicted for wrongfully showing favor to the men who have since been charged with the murder of Arbery. District attorneys everywhere should take note concerning the violation of oath while serving the public.
When police officers, paramedics and district attorneys start to consistently go to jail for any wrong doing in the line of duty, it should make all of those holding positions of public trust consider their own individual actions and choices when faced with life and death situations. Unfortunately, we know the reality of our society. Personal and professional accountability are not characteristics willingly embraced by every man and women throughout the law enforcement and the judicial ranks. Accountability has to be forced. The indictment in the Elijah McClain case almost didn't happen. For that reason, it shows that concerned citizens have to always pay attention, show scrutiny and peacefully protest if necessary.

with anti-mask and anti-vaccine policies, or by inviting even more learning interruption by withholding school funding. These misguided, politically-motivated and racially-discriminatory policies can only serve to widen the already alarming racial achievement gaps. for the rising homeless rate and his flip-flopping on housing the homeless in hotels.
There are ways to solve the homeless crisis in New York — getting people into high-quality transitional housing run by culturally attuned and sensitive organizations, making sure shelter staff and outreach workers have the proper tools and training, and improving access to mental health care and drug and alcohol recovery programs, to name just a few. But these are long-term solutions.
For now, the best thing the incoming Adams' administration can do to remedy the city's protracted homeless crisis is to pick fresh new leadership for the Department of Homeless Services. It's long overdue. In fact, New York City's efforts to fix and prevent homelessness should serve as a national model for all American cities. WI

If California's 88-year-old senior U.S. senator, Dianne Feinstein, had to step down during an Elder term, he could appoint someone to her seat and flip the Senate. That would spell doom for the agenda we elected the Biden-Harris administration to advance.
As someone who grew up in California, and whose parents still live there, I find all of this incredibly disturbing. I worry that progressive Californians, thinking "it can't happen here," will dismiss the chance of an ultraconservative coup in their state and skip voting against the recall. I'm aware that conservatives in the state, by contrast, are incredibly energized to get their voters to the polls. This is a train wreck that could really happen and could have ripple effects nationwide — but it's not too late to stop it.
I'm talking to everyone I know in California about the urgency of voting "no" on the recall. All of us need to do the same. This is a critically important moment in the battle against the far-right extremism that threatens to overtake us as a country. We can't miss the chance to nip this dangerous trend in the bud, wherever it threatens to bloom. WI

monetary incentive. If the complaint is upheld, the complainant must pay the plaintiff the sum of $10,000 and any legal fees. If the complaint is defeated, there is no penalty for bringing a false claim. This law is genuinely draconian.
Fewer and fewer people still live who remember the time before Roe v. Wade was decided on Jan. 22, 1973. Generations of women now live without the memories of back-alley abortions. There are fewer memories of bent wire coat hangers used as surgical tools to perform the illegal abortion. There are gravestones which mark the final resting places of young women who died from infection, perforated uteruses or a myriad of complications associated with the desperation of an unsanctioned medical procedure. Unfortunately, we can anticipate a recurrence of these events, impacting primarily, as they did before, on the poor and young women of color.
If past is prologue, we can also anticipate the wealthy unencumbered by any anti-abortion law. Just as they did before Roe, they will send their daughters out of the country where a safe procedure can be performed. They might even find a local physician who will take an under-the-table payment to perform an abortion — just as was done before Roe.
To where they are taking women back is now clear. The only question left is where they will attempt to take others who they deem as "second class" or "less than." WI

former slaves. Nothing.
The militaristic surge in this country since 2001 has justified astronomical increases in military spending, with no appreciable improvement in security. That means there was far less to spend on education, housing … human needs. The Rev. Jacksons, the Rev. Sharptons, the Rev. Barbers have appropriately appealed for relief again, and again, to no avail.
Next enemy, China.
Even as the United States has gone from conflict to invasion to occupation to withdrawal in defeat after defeat all over Asia, right in China's "backyard," so to speak, China's neighbors wrestled the mighty U.S. military machine to its knees, and instead, the Chinese spent their trillions of dollars over the same time, on development, trade, infrastructure improvement.
Remember the image of Chinese cities, full of people commuting via bicycle? Well, their country now has thousands and thousands of new millionaires, modern cities, and relations — especially in Africa — based on trade and investment, not conquest and exploitation. They didn't have to spend their nation's treasure, and sacrifice its youth fighting needless, racist wars.

Meanwhile, the U.S. has been busy launching drones and "bunker-busters," spending trillions on wars, making lasting enemies!
One of the greatest tragedies of 9/11 is that it made us lose sight of the deliberations which took place at the World Conference Against Racism, in Durban, South Africa, which had just concluded, Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001. The following Tuesday came the 9/11 attacks, and the needed conversations coming out of Durban about, racism, xenophobia, were pushed to the side by the ongoing conversation about "Islamic extremism." The arms manufacturers rejoiced, proclaim "cha-ching!"
Eisenhower was correct. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was correct, and yet Americans keep falling for the guns-over-butter argument. Perhaps that's the philosophy of the first White settlers, living in the people today: conquest rather than trusting the abundance of nature and the goodness of the human spirit. White people find it difficult to ever trust anyone because they know themselves to have always been so untrustworthy.
Let me caution to say, "not all White Americans" are crazy like that, but the enlightened ones cannot hold back that zombie-KKKtribe, mob mentality, the mad, hysterical, college-homecoming type of mentality that takes over and is now driving them all to their ruin.
See ya, wouldn't wanna be ya.
