Alsobrooks Proclaims September 16 Frances Tiafoe Day

In Footsteps of Arthur Ashe, Frances Tiafoe Reminded ‘There’s No Place Like Home’

Prince George’s County Celebrates Achievements of a Hometown Hero and Role Model

D. Kevin McNeir WI Senior Editor

Frances Tiafoe sat quietly behind a makeshift podium situated just a few steps away from the courts on which he once practiced hour after hour as he honed his tennis skills.

And while the roar of the crowd may still be echoing in his ears after his historic success at the recent U.S. Open, the young tennis star received a hero’s welcome upon his return to the community where he took his first steps – both on and off the court.

In fact, as Tiafoe greeted hundreds of friends, family members, local leaders and dozens of youth eager to follow in his footsteps – a collective who gathered in his support at the Junior Tennis Champions Center (JTCC) in College Park, Maryland – their voices filled the skies with shouts of “welcome home” that would reverberate long after he began his words of thanks.

Thus, making up in exuberance what they lacked in size when compared to the thousands who witnessed his success during the recent U.S. Open, Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks and Ray Benton, JTCC’s CEO, spearheaded a celebration that reminded Tiafoe what the fictitious Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz eventually discovered, “there’s no place like home.”

Alsobrooks made it official as she declared Friday, September 16, “Frances Tiafoe Day in Prince George’s County.”

Tiafoe, perhaps more willing to let his prowess on the tennis court serve as his message than a long speech ever could, thanked those who came out in his support with just a few comments and a huge smile. But he promised the hometown crowd that he would keep working hard until he could really make them proud and bring home his first Grand Slam title.

But from this writer’s perspective, what really made Tiafoe stand out in comparison to far too many other Black “celebrities” who have risen to the top of their chosen careers, would be his humility.

Tiafoe willingly signed scores of t-shirts, tennis balls, posters – whatever folks presented to him – and posed for photograph after photograph with adoring children or equally enthralled adults until the very last person in line had been acknowledged.

If he had somewhere else to be, it clearly did not matter to him. And for the record, the line of those who waited for their chance to meet Tiafoe would be a very long one.

Benton said he has long been proud of Tiafoe who first learned the rubrics of tennis as a little boy under the guidance of JTCC coaches.

“We’re so proud of Frances who competes with such grace and sportsmanship, serves as an excellent role model and who always strives for excellence,” Benton said. “He’s a true champion for tennis. But what has really impressed me is his longtime commitment to serving as a mentor for youth.”

Alsobrooks shared a story about a woman who, as she moved through the crowd to take her seat – one, incidentally reserved next to the tennis star – continued to utter three simple words in an almost sing-song manner.

“I’m the mother,” Alsobrooks said, referring to her observation of Tiafoe’s mother and the phrase she said repeatedly with pride.

“And like your mother and as any mother would be, we, too, are all so proud of you,” Alsobrooks said to Tiafoe.

“We are in the presence of greatness,” she said. “And I’m convinced that your recent success at the U.S. Open, becoming the first American to reach the semifinals since 2006 and the first Black American man since Arthur Ashe in 1972, to make it to the semifinals, was not an accident.”

“It was a step forward for you. This moment is lightning striking. And it confirms the fact that talent is nothing without its being accompanied by hard work. You’ve worked hard ever since your father, who helped build this facility, first brought you and your brother when you were just children to tennis courts not far from where we’re gathered today.”

“This is your day – one on which we honor you – our hometown hero and native son,” she said.

Other local officials from the County would continue to share words of praise about Tiafoe with the festivities continuing for several hours, replete with picnic-style food and drinks, celebratory music and the release of a huge bundle of balloons into the sunny skies that signaled the end of the celebration.

As for Tiafoe, one observer reminded this writer something he’d heard the tennis star mention just a few days ago – a lesson that he learned during this year’s U.S. Open.

“It takes courage to play this game at this level and to continue to be competitive,” Tiafoe had recently been heard to say.

“And now, I really believe that I can win any match, no matter who my opponent may be, if I really put my mind to it. If I play with everything I’ve got. And that’s what I plan to do – to get better and better and win,” Tiafoe said.

MIDTERMS from Page 1

es of Congress, where the GOP needs only to flip one Senate seat to retake the majority.

Current polling varies based on who’s conducting it.

A CBS News Battleground Tracker shows Democrats hold small majorities in the House and Senate.

It takes 218 seats to win control of the House, and the Tracker currently estimates that if the House elections were held today, Republicans would see a net gain of 13 seats and hold 226 seats, while Democrats would win 209.

CBS’ Tracker noted that, in the Senate, Republicans need a net gain of just one seat to flip control of the evenly divided chamber.

CBS News said it classifies 10 of the 35 races as battleground contests – four are considered tossups (Arizona, Georgia, Nevada and Wisconsin); three are leaning in favor of the Republican candidate (Florida, North Carolina, and Ohio); and three are leaning toward the Democrat (Colorado, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire).

A New York Times/Sienna College poll found that “even as they struggle to persuade voters that they should be trusted on the economy, Democrats remain unexpectedly competitive in the battle for Congress as the sprint to November’s midterm election begins.”

The Times/Sienna researchers reported that a surprising Democratic strength had been bolstered by falling gas prices and Biden’s success at breaking through legislative gridlock in Washington to pass his agenda.

Democrats are also benefiting from factors over which they had little control: the public outcry in response to the Supreme Court’s overturning of federal abortion rights and the return of former President Donald Trump to an attention-commanding presence on the national stage, the pollsters wrote.

Some of the key races include those in Georgia.

Republican Gov. Brian Kemp and Democrat Stacey Abrams are running neck-and-neck in their rematch of the

2018 nailbiter. A new Quinnipiac University poll showed Kemp at 50% of likely voters and Abrams at 48%. However, the poll noted a 2.7% margin of error. The Georgia Senate race between incumbent Democrat Raphael Warnock and Republican Herschel Walker isn’t as close, polling revealed. Warnock currently has a 6-point lead over Walker, with the two scheduled for a debate on Oct. 14 in Savannah. Fifty-two percent of likely Georgia voters say they plan to support Warnock, while 46% called the Trumpbacked Walker their pick. Interestingly, the poll found that voters “overwhelmingly said their minds are already made up.” Ninety-four percent of respondents supporting a candidate in the race for governor say they have already decided whom they will vote for in November. However, when it comes to the Senate contest, 96% of voters said the same, the pollsters reported. In Pennsylvania, Democrat John Fetterman continues to lead Trumpbacked Republican Mehmet Oz. According to a Monmouth University poll, Fetterman enjoys a positive personal rating of 47% favorable to 42% unfavorable. The poll found just under half of the electorate will either definitely (32%) or probably (17%) vote for him in November. Oz has a net negative personal rating of 36% favorable to 52% unfavorable. About 4 in 10 will definitely (23%) or probably (16%) vote for him. Slightly more Pennsylvania voters say they definitely won’t vote for Oz (45%) than completely rule out Fetterman (38%). Along with Georgia, races that will draw national interest include Senate contests in Arizona, Nevada, Wisconsin, Colorado, New Hampshire, Ohio, North Carolina, and Florida. Also, 36 states have gubernatorial contests this year, including Texas and Florida, where controversial Republicans Greg Abbott and Ron DeSantis are overwhelming favorites to retain office. WI THE WASHINGTON INFORMER / WWW.WASHINGTONINFORMER.COM

Depression and other demons of unbelief will come after you and during your darkness. During this, it's hardest to walk by faith and not by sight. All of the negativity is working according to God's plan, because God is trying to get your attention. It is darkest before dawn. When you have a tall mountain to climb, facing unbelievable opposition, God is trying to tell you something. Many times, you are on the brink of something good.

There is a point when things are so difficult you wonder how you will make it. That's when you must pray without ceasing and cling even closer to our Lord and Savior. You must find a new normal. You measure your life and it doesn't look like what you expected at a certain age. That's a time when darkness is setting in. Just remember, it is always darkest before dawn.

The sun will rise. A new day will dawn. Isaiah 58:8 says, "Then your light shall break forth like the morning, your healing shall spring forth speedily, and your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard." And Malachi 4:2 says, "But to you who fear my name the Sun of Righteousness shall arise with healing in His wings; and you shall go out and grow fat like stall-fed calves."

This Scripture says we will celebrate someone special. I celebrate my mother. She let her light shine even when it was dark. Mama played her washboard as my father played his guitar, and the church was on fire! Psalms said, "The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear."

This Scripture is from the book of Revelations where it says in 22:16 the bright morning star. It appears before sunrise. When the new day is dawning. It is bright enough to be visible even in daylight. Here is the Scripture: "I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star."

He can bring joy out of sorrow, beauty from ashes, and he said in the beginning, "Let there be light." Continue to be a light in dark places.

Remember Peter in the boat on the Sea of Galilee. Peter gets out the boat and actually walks on water, as long as his focus was on Jesus. Then he started noting wind and waves and began to sink. Our focus determines our attitude. How do we let more light in? Psalms said in the word, "He is a lamp under my feet and a light to my path." Let light in by studying the word.

Is your marriage in trouble? Let me remind you that statistics show that every marriage is 80% good and 20% bad. But you must focus on the good. Replenish yourself during such times by doing more for someone in need — your problem will seem quite small when you notice how much others are suffering. Instead, you will begin to count your blessings. Here is when you and your husband could go on a mission trip.

Another important thing you can do. Is there someone in your life you don't like? Get closer to them, and listen to more of their personal story, you may be surprised how your dislike will change. Pray for them, this will change your thoughts. Instead of dislike, may we be a thousand points of light.

When I was young, I had earaches and nose bleeds. Life felt very dark for me every time I got one of those painful earaches. My nose would bleed so badly that the teacher would have to stop class to try to help me to get it to stop. Do I know why this happened to me so often, in elementary school? No. God healed me from both, I'm thankful for His goodness and mercy in my life, thankful for Him shining His light on me.

For those in dark places, for whom problems of life have taken a toll, who've made one too many mistakes, and had their light go out: God wants to speak into your life and say, "Let there be light." We must remember, it is always darkest just before dawn.

Obiaka said HBCUs serve as the ideal incubator for talent. Last December, Inglish Hills personified that reality when she took home the grand prize during the inaugural HBCU NVC.

Hills, a 2022 graduate of Spelman College in Atlanta, presented Save-Cycle, a low-energy recycling container in which consumers can deposit recyclable items and receive funds directly to their bank account. An accompanying mobile app shows people nearby recycling containers.

Hills, a Bay Area native, thought of Save-Cycle after she and her friends spending time at Mission Dolores Park in San Francisco struggled to find a trash can. A subsequent conversation with a man collecting trash at the park inspired what Hills described as an eco-friendly way of supporting her community.

When she’s not completing her studies at Spelman and working on Save-Cycle, Hills mixes drinks at functions across the Atlanta metropolitan area as part of another venture she started years ago. She calls entrepreneurship the best means of advancing her goals.

After winning the HBCU NVC, Hills took on a venture capital internship in New York City and pursued another opportunity that connected her with more business mentors. She said she hasn’t spent her $25,000 grand prize yet, mostly out of a desire to soak in as much industry knowledge as possible and set a foundation for her small business.

“It’s about having people who’ve been in the industry with connections who know the processes, even down to the paperwork,” Hills said.

“I’ve been paired with great mentors through the challenge. It’s great to have someone as a sounding board,” she continued.

“I know that Save-Cycle can be a world-changing idea [but] it takes time to get it off the ground. I want to be a Black woman who brings a world-changing idea, hire people who look like me and have young girls look up to me.”

WI @SamPKCollins African countries) as something to exploit. In 1493, Pope Alexander VI issued an encyclical (or Papal letter) that mandated that "Christian" Europeans "convert, colonize, and enslave" those who were not Christian. England was one of the most enthusiastic colonizers, claiming parts of Africa and the Caribbean as part of their "empire." Elizabeth II inherited this legacy and did nothing about it during her 70-year reign. Is it likely that Charles III will be any better?

The "British Empire" grew and prospered through colonization and exploitation. It owes several countries on the African continent reparations. Of course, not that they are not as dominating

dealing with racism, racial identity, and sexuality.

“This is a fight for the truth that has always existed even if it rarely gets told,” Johnson says. “When the youth are empowered with stories about the experiences of others, they become adults who understand the necessity for equity and equality and have the tools to build a world the likes of which we have never seen.”

But far-right activists tell parents that words like “equity” are code for Marxism and something they should fight. Trump Republicans are encouraging MAGA activists to take

17- to 24-year-olds are ineligible for military service.

Lt. Gen. Xavier Brunson, the head of the Army’s I Corps, was blunt in his criticism about military-age Americans.

“Only 23% of the people that are of age to serve are actually qualified,” Brunson said, highlighting the need to look at what is happening to our youth because the issues are much wider than just the Army. “Some of the challenges we have are obesity, we have pre-existing medical conditions, we have behavioral health problems, we have criminality, people with felonies, and drug use. This is not an Army problem, this is an American problem.” "Ready, Willing and Unable to Serve," a report by Mission: Readiness — a group of retired military and civilian leaders — found that 1 in 4 young people between the ages of 17 and 24 do not have a high school diploma. About 30% of those with a diploma still fail the Armed Forces Qualification Test, the entrance exam required to join the U.S. military. Another 1 in 10 young people cannot serve because of past convictions for felonies or serious misdemeanors, states the report. A full 27% are simply too overweight to join the military. Nearly 32% have disqualifying health problems, including asthma, eyesight or hearing problems, mental health issues, or recent attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder treatment.

According to the report, that leaves only 2 out of 10 American young people fully eligible to join the military without special waivers.

“Imagine 10 young people walking into a recruiter’s office and seven of them getting turned away,” said former Under Secretary Joe Reeder in a press release. “We cannot allow today’s dropout crisis to become a national security crisis.”

It is not surprising that someone with a military background like Wes Moore has adopted “Leave Nobody Behind” as their military-inspired campaign slogan. When we have reports showing over 70% of our young Americans are unqualified to serve in the military, it weakens the potential workforce for businesses and national security. It takes the child, parent, teacher, administrator, and community to play a direct or indirect role in our youth's physical, social, educational, emotional, and spiritual development.

When we have American soldiers who are lost or left behind in battle, they are eventually designated as MIA, or “missing in action.” Today, far too many of our youth will be MIA when it comes to meeting the future military needs of our country.

as they once were, with a faltering economy and a diminished world footprint, they aren't likely to talk reparation now. Yet there is never a "good time" to make recompense to the people who have been exploited. Queen Elizabeth II's death is a "good time" for a new king to repair old wounds.

It is the height of white entitlement that a British queen attempted to rule countries that were colonized. It is the irony of white entitlement that some African descendant Caribbean natives sing "Hail to the Queen" with as much enthusiasm as their British cousins do. But Queen Elizabeth's death is an excellent time to examine global predatory capitalism and the evils it has wrought. When will the great colonizers come to grips with their evil and label it as something more than"regrettable"? If there is regret, Prince William shows it by becoming a champion for reparations. Smiling and dancing through Jamaica does not offer a scintilla of remorse.

My condolences for Queen Elizabeth are muted by my condolences for the exploited, those who live in "kingdom" countries who chafed under her dominance. The death of this monarch offers us an opportunity to examine her reign, its awful impact, and the ways the U.K. colluded with global predatory capitalist forces to keep African and Caribbean nations subservient. The mindless celebrations of her reign are also celebrations of worldwide capitalism and exploitation.

over their school boards by running propaganda campaigns about “critical race theory.” Trumpish state legislators are introducing laws to make it illegal to teach anything that might make White students experience “discomfort.” One Texas lawmaker demanded information from schools on 850 books he thought were suspect; his list included works on history and human rights. In Virginia, Gov. Glenn Youngkin set up an email hotline for people to report teachers suspected of “divisive” practices.

Books targeted in the current war on truth include a memoir by Ruby Bridges, which tells the true story about her walking through angry mobs when she was a six-year-old who became the first Black student to attend a New Orleans elementary school that had previously been off-limits to non-White students.

This is an important part of our history. We cannot build a future together if we are not willing to honestly face the truth about our past and our present.

Banned Books Week is a good time to commit ourselves to defending the freedom to read, teach, and learn about our history — and to opposing those who want to make it illegal to teach about that history or make it impossible for educators to do so without being smeared and harassed. WI

For years, Jackson has suffered under the specter of failing (water) infrastructure. There is no justification for a state capital or a city as large as Jackson to operate under a "boil water" order since July. Instead of addressing this problem which will only worsen with age, Jackson has been ignored while the interests of surrounding 'white' suburbs have been met with the use of available financial resources.

An egregious demonstration of antipathy is illustrated by the actions of two southern, Republican governors — Abbott of Texas and DeSantis of Florida. Each has decided to unceremoniously ship "undesirable" economic refugees to northern jurisdictions in what has been described as a major political stunt. Stunt or not, these actions have been taken with complete disregard for the ultimate welfare of the affected men, women and children. I can only suggest that these two Bible-thumping governors refresh their understanding of the admonition in Matthew 25:40.

Even more horrifying is the fact that these two Republican governors have expressed presidential aspirations. Like the last Republican to hold the office, they each wish to bring and infect the nation with their own brand of duplicity, disorder, disruption and antipathy. They have accepted the belief that political power and control can best be sustained in a state or country in chaos. At least for the near future, we, the people, have the ability to resist. For the remainder of our lives and for the future of our children, we must reject the hatred that will, if allowed, overwhelm us. WI

Then there's TD Bank's poor record on overdraft fees.

Just two years ago, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) entered into a consent order with TD Bank that provided $97 million in restitution to 1.42 million consumers, and the CFPB charged the firm a $25 million civil penalty. The bank had illegally charged customers overdraft fees without first obtaining their consent before enrolling them in its optional overdraft.

Overdraft fees often exploit consumers' short-term cash needs. The vast majority of overdraft fee revenue comes from people with account balances that average less than $350.

TD Bank's business model relies far more on overdraft fees than other large banks. While some of its peer institutions eliminated overdraft fees, TD charges a $35 overdraft fee as many as three times a day.

Fortunately, consumer advocates are registering their serious concerns with federal regulators. "TD Bank cannot serve the needs of low-income communities while insisting on maintaining this large stream of revenue that, by definition, depends on consumers who lack funds," testified Nadine Chabrier, senior policy and litigation counsel with the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL), at a recent hearing on the merger proposal. She noted that in deciding whether to approve a merger, government regulators, by law, must consider whether community needs would be served.

In an Aug. 23 joint letter sent to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) and the Federal Reserve, agencies whose approval of the deal is required, consumer advocates made clear their opposition. "This merger will result in a significant presence in the Southeast, in states like Tennessee, Texas, Arkansas, and Florida, among others, where there is a concentration of Black and Latino communities and poverty, often overlapping. These communities bear the acute and disproportionate burden of overdraft fees, calling into the question whether the needs and convenience of the community will be met," wrote the advocates. Elsewhere, they note, "Many affected by relentless overdraft fees end up having their checking account closed, and reentry into the banking system is difficult."

Signatories to the letter included Americans for Financial Reform Education Fund, California Reinvestment Coalition, Demos, and CRL.

Federal regulators, appointed by the Biden administration, have signaled scrutiny of mergers is a renewed priority.

Michael Barr, the newly appointed vice chair for supervision of the Federal Reserve System, staked out this position as part of a wide-ranging Sept. 7 speech, titled "Making the Financial System Safer and Fairer." "Fairness is fundamental to financial oversight, and I am committed to using the tools of regulation, supervision, and enforcement so that businesses and households have access to the services they need, the information necessary to make their financial decisions, and protection from unfair treatment," noted Barr.

was the idea of freedom at that time?” Scott said.

The history of the National Urban League, which was born in Harlem in response to the Great Migrations, and its role in nurturing the Harlem Renaissance, will be interwoven in the museum's sweeping narrative.

Opportunity: A Journal of Negro Life, for many years the official monthly publication of the National Urban League, employed Harlem Renaissance writers, publishing their poetry and short stories and promoting African-American literature through articles, reviews, and literary prizes.

The museum also will explore the Black cultural, artistic, and political Renaissances that flourished in other communities like Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood, Washington DC and in Los Angeles. "We're really taking a long view of civil rights, not just the period of the 1950s and 1960s that most people think of as the civil rights era,” Scott said. "We're looking at it from the very roots of the urban north, all the way up through the present day and the Black Lives Matter movement. The policy decisions and political decisions that have impacted northern city centers will be brought out, along with the different forms of injustices and inequity. "We invite people to reflect on what brought us to where we are, and how that influences us and inspires us to move forward,” Scott said.
