This year’s AIA Wisconsin Convention & Building Products Expo invites us to CHALLENGE! the status quo and not take anything for granted.

Everyone attending the AIA Wisconsin Convention & Expo must register and have a name badge. Registration is available on Level 4 and Level 1 (during Expo hours). Entry into seminar rooms and the Expo Hall requires that attendees wear their name badges and have them visible for easy viewing.

Welcome to the 84th Annual AIA Wisconsin Convention & Building Products Expo . . . CHALLENGE!

Featuring outstanding keynote speakers and timely seminars, the Convention & Expo offers AIA members and allied professionals opportunities to explore emerging design, practice, technology and sustainability issues, as well as investigate the innovative products and services now available to Wisconsin’s design and construction industry. The two-day program explores current challenges to the practice of architecture and offers practical solutions through inventive design, new technology and innovative project management. You’ll discover many opportunities to recharge your creativity, renew professional relationships and rekindle your passion for architecture. Speakers will CHALLENGE! Conventional wisdom and outline new ideas for exceeding client expectations, designing successful practices, utilizing technology and achieving sustainability goals. Registration Badges

Seminars

Paid attendee registration includes your choice of seminars based on one-day or two-day registration. Seminar and keynote sessions are offered on a first-come first-seated basis. Selecting your preferred seminar when you registered does not obligate you to attend that particular seminar, nor does it reserve your seat. However, it does allow us to coordinate room sizes with the popularity of the events.

Exhibit Periods

The Exhibit Hall will be open to the public for the Building Products Expo at the following times: Wednesday 3:00–7:00 p.m. Thursday 11:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. A complete listing of exhibitors and a floorplan of the Exhibit Hall is included in this program.

AIA/CES Reporting & Transcripts

AIA members can earn valuable AIA/CES “learning unit hours” by participating in AIA Wisconsin Convention programs. AIA Wisconsin is a Registered Provider with the American Institute of Architects Continuing Education Systems (AIA/CES). Continuing education hours earned on completion of this program will be reported to AIA/CES for AIA members. Certificates of Completion are available on request. Convention programs are registered with AIA/ CES for continuing professional education. As such, they do not include content that may be deemed or construed to be an approval or endorsement by AIA of any material of construction or any method or manner of handling, using, distributing or dealing with any material or product. Attendees are required to fill out an AIA /CES Conference Attendance Form for Convention programs and an Expo Education Report Form to report participation in predetermined tracks of 15-minute sessions. The forms should be left at the Convention registration counter to be recorded on transcripts.

Continuing Education Requirements

The annual AIA member renewal requirement is 18 Learning Unit Hours (LUs), of which at least 12 hours must address health, safety and welfare topics. Fulfilling AIA/CES requirements enables members to also satisfy state licensing requirements for most states, including Wisconsin.

Exchanging knowledge and building professional relationships is priceless. AIA Wisconsin hosts the Building Products Expo for design and construction industry leaders to network, learn and advance their professional careers.

WAF Raffle

Wednesday, April 22 Findorff Keynote Address

Beyond the Walls of Cool Spaces Stephen Chung, AIA 2015 AIA Wisconsin Design Awards Presentation 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Lecture Hall Celebrate excellence in architecture by participating in the presentation of the 2015 AIA Wisconsin Design Awards. This year’s awards presentation will be preceded by the J.H. Findorff & Son Keynote Address “Beyond the Walls of Cool Spaces” featuring Stephen Chung, AIA, host of “Cool Spaces!” public television show. Stephen Chung, AIA, decided to focus his energies on finding a way to share his passion for architecture with the general public — to bridge the gap between fellow designers and those who use the places we create. His hope was that if architects could better explain what they do, and why it’s important, it would increase interest in architecture. With a more engaged general public, there would be more opportunities for architects to build. Ultimately, the increased attention could lead to a better built environment including better designed, less costly, more sustainable and more beautiful spaces. Everyone would benefit. See how he’s doing it with PBS by highlighting one cool space at a time. Thursday, April 23 Sustainability: The Future of Making Buildings Erin Rae Hoffer, AIA Dan Bayer, Assoc. AIA Andy Knauf Josh Lowe Mike Whaley Hall of Ideas H & I Technology Trends and Architectural Practice. New tools and standards, such as BIM, are now widely adopted in architectural practice. As client and project requirements change, design professionals are challenged to select the most useful innovations without being overwhelmed by the demands of technology. But how does design technology improve project performance, what is the return for this investment, and how is it most effectively applied at different stages in the process? The industry use of technology will change the architect’s work process in design and construction and may even lead to new opportunities for architects, such as in building operations. This session proposes a vision for the future based on the most promising design-oriented technologies today and presents a framework of approaches appropriate to architectural project stages. Case studies will open up an interactive conversation about where these trends may lead us and how best to prepare. (S2C: 1.5 LU hrs.) Interior Perspectives: The New Artificial: Authenticity and Materials Grace Jeffers Hall of Ideas G & J In this age of tree plantations, engineered lumber and bio board, what, exactly, does “natural” mean? And, are natural materials always a better choice than manufactured ones? Explore these and other issues that influence our decisions about natural and synthetic materials. Discuss the surprising truths about materials, confront some preconceptions and ultimately become a more educated specifier. We’ll discuss a new set of criteria for evaluating the authenticity and appropriateness of materials—especially wood. Weigh the impact of synthetic versus natural materials, including which has the better environmental outcome. Learn to tell new stories through material choice. Thursday, April 23 Immel Construction Keynote Address Meeting the Public Space Challenge Ben Gilmartin, AIA 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. Lecture Hall

Benjamin Gilmartin, AIA, a principal at Diller Scofidio + Renfro, will examine a range of interdisciplinary strategies that the studio has used to encourage social engagement in designing buildings, parks, and public spaces. The presentation will discuss a wide variety of large-scale projects from the firm’s portfolio, including the Rio de Janeiro Museum of Image and Sound, the Columbia University Medical & Graduate Education Building, the Lincoln Center Redevelopment project, the Broad museum, the High Line, and Culture Shed. Participants will be able to define new and overlooked opportunities for creating social spaces, weaving public and private, and blurring the boundary between site and surroundings. Identify the value of an expanded conception of public space in creating culturally significant and sustainable architecture. Design: 50 Shades of Gray: Drawing for Pleasure and Profit Bruce Bondy & Kurt Zimmerman, AIA Hall of Ideas E & F This workshop is intended to teach basic drawing principles and give architects and designers a framework for developing their own skills. Participants will work through a series of hands-on exercises designed to inspire drawing as an integral part of the design process.
