s we jump into the new year, we’re excited about how quickly our family-based reputation is spreading. As the popularity of WF spreads, so too, do the relationships we make and the places we distribute.

I’ve had several people come to my wife and I and ask us “how” or “why” we decided to publish a family-based magazine. Around this time of year, I often share how we came to publish Wichita Family Magazine and why we’re doing it.

Almost two years ago, my wife and I were sitting in our living room talking about what we were going to do that evening with our kids. We were tired of doing the trip to Target/go out to dinner thing--we wanted to “do” something with our kids, and more importantly, something family-friendly. As we contemplated the situation, we realized their were few places we could find for information about family-friendly things to do in the Wichita area. Later that evening, after settling for a night at home, we started talking again about the lack of information/ entertainment out there for young families. It was at that point, that Christy and I decided to do something about it; specifically, we wanted to help bring families together.

Amazingly, two weeks from that moment, a colleague of ours approached us about taking over a publication that she owned and published--enter, Wichita Family Magazine. Up to that point, Christy and I hadn’t shared our desire to start a family publication with anyone else. So you can imagine our amazement when this happened. We truly felt like God had placed that opportunity in our lap. From that point, WF has been a process of nurturing and shaping a bigger ideal---the promotion of family values. We continue to believe that God has his hand in the future of this publication and His blessings are seen daily. As we look back and thank Him for an amazing 2011, we’re even more excited about the future.

Washington teacher receives Kansas Horizon Award unice Perez, kindergarten teacher E at Washington Elementary, is the recipient of the 2012 Kansas Horizon Award from the Kansas Department of Education. The Kansas Horizon Award recognizes teachers who do an exemplary job during their first year of teaching. Perez was surprised with the honor by a call from Dr. Diane DeBacker, Kansas Commissioner of Education, on January 17.

“This is such a surprise. I did not expect this at all,” she said. “I am honored.”

“When she first started teaching, I knew right away that she is not like other first-year teachers,” said Julie Bettis, principal at Washington. “She does a phenomenal job with her students.”

Perez is one of 31 teachers across the state to receive the award. As a recipient, she will join the Kansas Exemplary Educators Network (KEEN).

KEEN is a network of educators from across the state, allowing teachers to share ideas with other teachers and to participate in a number of professional

development programs.

She was the recipient of the Wichita Public Schools 2011 Distinguished

Classroom Teacher Awards in the New Teacher, elementary, category last spring.

Robinson’s Orchestra performs before national audience

obinson Middle School’s Orchestra Rprestigious was invited to perform at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. Robinson’s Orchestra was one of nine orchestras selected to perform from dozens of orchestras from across the world that applied. The orchestra performed on December 15.

The Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic is the largest and most prestigious professional music educators’ conference in the world. It is attended by over 15,000 people each year from across the U.S. and more than 30 countries. To be invited to perform at this conference is among the highest distinctions that an orchestra can achieve. Robinson’s orchestra and East High School’s Symphony Orchestra have previously performed at the clinic.

McLean students donated more than 50 toys, some blankets and other items to the Humane Society. Student representatives are pictured with Bonnie Harrell, Director of Youth Education at the Humane Society.

holidays. The students donated some of their old toys to the Humane Society to give the dogs something to play with while waiting for a home. The students also made blankets for cats to sleep on and donated other items like paper towels and peanut butter.

Three student representatives helped

deliver the more than 50 toys and other items on December 19. The students placed the gifts under the Christmas tree in the Humane Society’s lobby.

“We had a representative from the Humane Society come to school to talk about how they take care of animals and the responsibilities of pet ownership,” said Joann Randall, first-grade teacher at McLean. “The students wanted to do something nice for the dogs in return.”

Feature a Teacher

eature a Teacher: A Wichita Family series that introduces readers to area teachers who are making a difference.

Many of Margaret Gugino’s favorite childhood memories are of times spent at school. Her parents were both in the education field, her father as an elementary school teacher and administrator and her mother as a special education educator.

Gugino, who has been teaching for 7 years, the past 2 years at Kensler Elementary in Wichita, became interested in teaching at an early age when she saw the impact her parents were making in the lives of their students.

Their In fact, when Gugino was told of her nomination for the Feature a Teacher article, the first thing she thought was, “I wish I could call my dad.” Her dad, with whom she was very close and was a role model of hers, passed away in May 2008.

“One of the greatest memories I have of my dad is when he would take me back to his school at night after dinner,” said Gugino. “We would play basketball together in the gymnasium. I loved sitting in his office coloring while he worked. The smell of popcorn reminds me of how he always brought home popcorn on Fridays for me and my brothers from the “popcorn Friday” he had in his school. As I began having my own children I wanted to provide them with some of the same memories I experienced as a child.”

Gugino took her love teaching and tailored it to her own strengths, strengths she realized along the way in her own education. While in college she began working with an autistic child and she developed a personal connection to teaching kids with special needs.

With a bachelor degree in Special Education and a master degree in Early Childhood Development, Gugino started a program for toddlers with autism in Las Vegas then focused on similar needs when moving to Wichita. She initially worked in a self-contained autism program for toddlers with autism and for the past two years has been co-teaching at Kensler Elementary School in Wichita in a regular education classroom where she works with a wide range of disabilities including developmental delays, down syndrome and autism.

“The thing I look forward to the most when I go to work each day is seeing the smile on the faces of the kids when they walk through the doors of off the bus,” said Gugino. “On my birthday this year, I went to get my students off the morning bus and two of my little boys were screaming, ‘Happy Birthday, Ms. Margaret!’ before they even got off the bus. I also have the most amazing team of people to work with. They make

coming to work fun and we laugh a lot.”

Before receiving the eager school boys screams in Wichita, Gugino had many more fun and memory-filled birthdays across the country where she grew up. Born and raised in Dunkirk, a small town which is in western New York, Gugino is the youngest of four children.

Now Gugino and her husband of 13 years, Erick, have three children. Nolan, 12, Ty, 10 and Nina 6.

“We have lived in Wichita for the past six years. Having children does not leave me much spare time, but I do love to cook, go to the movies and have coffee with friends at Starbucks. I am also continuing my education by working on my second bachelor degree in elementary education.

My family and I love baseball; our team is the New York Yankees. For now, you can find me on almost any day of the week cheering on my boys at Westurban or my daughter on the soccer field!”

If she’s not cheering on her own children, Gugino is cheering on one of her own little students who reward her with plenty of love and affection.

“The parents are always thanking me for what I do for their child, but I would like to take this opportunity to thank them,” she added. “Thank you for giving me the honor of working with your child and for trusting me with them. It is truly an honor.”

ou can be romantic this Valentines Day without spending too much.

All it takes is a little creativity and forethought. The key lies in personalizing your celebration and letting your loved one know how special you feel each ordinary day that you are together.

Here are 24 ideas for celebrating your love this February 14th, and throughout the year.

1. Make a memory jar. Take simple slips of paper and write a favorite memory on each one. Be specific, and try to record as much about the occasion as you can. Tuck them into a jar or wooden box, tied with a bow.

4. Choose a book in which you are both interested, fiction or nonfiction.

Read a new chapter each night before bed. This cozy tradition will allow you to spend some quality time together and often makes for thought provoking breakfast conversations.

5. Make a tape of the songs special to your relationship. Include "your song," songs from your wedding, songs from favorite movies. Add a personal voice dedication and leave it in his briefcase, Walkman, or car stereo.

6. Turn off the TV and play a game of Scrabble or Pictionary.

7. Write about the feelings you experienced when you first met your mate. Write about the first time you knew you were in love.

8. Frame a new, special photo of the two of you and display it in your home.

9. Have you been holding a grudge against your partner? Today, forgive it and move on. Witness how much power the act of forgiveness injects into your relationship.

10. Kidnap your spouse. A friend of mine had a lot of success with this one.

She knew her husband had always wanted to get married in Vegas, but he had agreed to a large, formal ceremony hosted by her family. So, after they had been married 10 years, she surprised him at work with a packed suitcase. They caught an evening flight and renewed their vows before an Elvis impersonator in a Vegas chapel. Years later, they are still talking about it.

11. Travel to another town, where no one will recognize you. Check into a hotel or Bed and Breakfast.

12. Jot down 20 things you love about your partner and slip it under his dinner plate.

13. Cook her favorite breakfast.

14. Choose a book you both will enjoy, and read it aloud together.

15. Have a scavenger hunt. Write a few poems, wrap candy kisses inside, and hide them around the house. Each poem should be a clue to finding the next one. Make sure the final clue lands your mate someplace you want to end up for the entire evening. A romance package, including a bottle of champagne and new lingerie, is a nice touch.

16. Write down fifty favorite memories of your life spent together so far. Invite your partner to add to the list, as well as to share special ideas for the future.

17. Leave a message on her voicemail with a silly, romantic poem. (Roses are red, violets are blue . . .)

18. Make a CD featuring the songs that have been important in your relationship. Slip it into the CD player of her car.

19. Bring homemade cookies or brownies to his office with a simple love note.

20. Surprise her with some bath salts and her favorite magazine. Then take the kids out of the house for the evening so she can enjoy some time alone.

21. Stash a love note in his shoe.

22. Spend some time talking about all the goals you have been able to accomplish during your time as a couple.
