Joke s and Riddles Q:
What month has 28 days? A: All of them!
Q:
What occurs once in a minute, twice in a moment and never in a thousand years? A: The letter “M.”
Most clocks have two arrows. The short arrow is known as the little hand and tells the hour. The long arrow is known as the big hand and tells the minute. When the little hand is on 11 and the big hand is on 12, for example, it is 11 o’clock. Write in the time under each clock face pictured.
What Time Is It? The answer to that question depends upon where you are in the world. At midday in Chicago, your watch might read 12 p.m., Friday, January 15, 2010, whereas in Sydney, Australia, it would read 5 a.m., Saturday, January 16, 2010. The difference in time around the world has to do with the International Date Line and time zones. The International Date Line is an imaginary line in the middle of the Pacific Ocean that divides the earth into two days. Generally places in the eastern hemisphere are a day ahead of places in the western hemisphere. Earth is divided into time zones. The United States has several, including Eastern, Central, Mountain and Pacific Standard Time. Generally, the farther west the area, the earlier in the day it is. At 7 p.m. Central Time in Chicago, it is 6 p.m. Mountain Time in Denver and 5 p.m. Pacific Time in Los Angeles.

editor’s letter As we jump into the new year, we’re excited about how quickly our family-based reputation is spreading. As the popularity of WF spreads, so too, do the relationships we make and the places we distribute. I’ve had several people come to my wife and I and ask us “how” or “why” we decided to publish a family-based magazine. Around this time of year, I often share how we came to publish Wichita Family Magazine and why we’re doing it. Almost two years ago, my wife and I were sitting in our living room talking about what we were going to do that evening with our kids. We were tired of doing the trip to Target/go out to dinner thing--we wanted to “do” something with our kids, and more importantly, something family-friendly. As we contemplated the situation, we realized their were few places we could find for information about family-friendly things to do in the Wichita area. Later that evening, after settling for a night at home, we started talking again about the lack of information/entertainment out there for young families. It was at that point, that Christy and I decided to do something about it; specifically, we wanted to help bring families together. Amazingly, two weeks from that moment, a colleague of ours approached us about taking over a publication that she owned and published-enter, Wichita Family Magazine. Up to that point, Christy and I hadn’t shared our desire to start a family publication with anyone else. So you can imagine our amazement when this happened. We truly felt like God had placed that opportunity in our lap. From that point, WF has been a process of nurturing and shaping a bigger ideal---the promotion of family values. We continue to believe that God has his hand in the future of this publication and His blessings are seen daily. As we look back and thank Him for an amazing 2010, we’re even more excited about the future.

WINTER READY? Taking time to winterize your vehicle, starting with your tires, will help keep you safer on the road this season. By Tresa Erickson
"What are you going to all of that trouble for?" your sister demands to know after she hears you making an appointment with a service station to have your tires inspected. Unlike your sister who lives in the Sunshine State, you live where winters can be harsh. In order to ensure you get where you need to this winter, you are having your vehicle winterized, starting with the tires. Good tires can make all of the difference on treacherous winter roads. In order to prepare your vehicle for the rough weather ahead, you must make sure your tires are properly inflated. Tires lose about a psi of air pressure every month and every time the air temperature drops about 10 degrees. Vehicles with under-inflated tires do not handle well, especially on icy roads. They also increase wear and tear and use more gas (and who needs that with the price of gas these days). If your vehicle is brand new, you may not have to worry much about the tire pressure. It probably came equipped with a tire pressure monitor that will inform you when the pressure has dropped below a certain point. If you have an older vehicle, you will definitely need to keep an eye on the tire pressure and have your tires checked regularly. You also need to keep an eye on the tread depth. The more worn and shallow the tread on your tires, the less grip you will have on the road. Depending upon where you live and how treacherous the roads become in the winter, you might want to consider switching to winter tires. Designed specifically for icy roads, these will provide you with superior grip. Keep in mind that you will need to replace all four tires. Should you do just the back two, you will compromise your grip and your safety. To ensure this does not happen, some tire dealers refuse to sell consumers fewer than four tires, unless they need a single replacement winter tire. It is important that you winterize your vehicle. Start with the tires and work your way up. The better prepared your car is for winter, the safer you will be when out and about.

Easy Ways to Organize Your Workspace
(Family Features)
W
hether you have a home office or just a small corner that serves as the family work station, keeping it organized is key to getting things done. These simple tips will help clear out the clutter and make the most of your space. Supplies and Demand. From paper clips to reams of paper, everything needs a place to go. Dumping it all into one drawer doesn’t really help you find things when you need them. Prefab drawer organizers don’t always fit the drawer sizes you have, so make your own. Use small containers such as mini loaf pans, small plastic baskets or other small square or rectangle tins and boxes. They’ll hold paper clips, thumbtacks, stamps, sticky note pads and plenty of other small desk items. For desktop storage, use jars, small vases or decorated cans to hold pens and pencils. They’re small and can add an interesting visual element to your work space. Cut Cord Clutter. There’s nothing like a

tangle of electrical cords to make an area seem even more cluttered. Wireless Charging Station. To tame the cords needed to charge up electronic devices, go wireless instead. Powermat helps eliminate dead batteries, constant plugging/unplugging, loss of chargers and tangled wires. With real-time wireless charging for phones, games, music players and other popular electronic devices, Powermat allows users to charge multiple devices simultaneously, charging as fast as or faster than the device’s charger. It senses when the device is fully charged, and stops sending power so that it not only saves energy, but protects from overcharging. The Powermat system pairs an ultra-thin mat with a sleek receiver that attaches to each device, enabling users to simply drop and charge. Custom receivers are available for the iPhone, iPod, Nintendo DS and Blackberry devices. These and over one thousand other devices may be charged using the convenient Powercube, a universal receiver that comes standard with every Powermat.
Available in Portable or Home & Office versions, Powermat makes a great gift for any anyone looking to de-clutter their home or office. The Powermat’s suggested retail price is $99.99 for mats and $29.99 - $39.99 for receivers. Visit www.powermat.com for more information. Go Vertical. Why spread out if you can spread up? Look for ways to take advantage of any vertical space you may have. Even one wall shelf can add some much needed storage space. Put up a wall-mounted message center, or create one with a small bulletin board, a write-on board, and a wall file. Stack equipment, but don’t cover up any venting. Use small chair-leg protectors as spacers in between to let air circulate and prevent overheating. It doesn’t take much – and it doesn’t have to cost much – to get your workspace organized. A few simple fixes and you’re on your way to a more productive day.

I DID IT! I DID IT! I DID IT! Woot, Woot! I DID IT! Once. But, hey, I did it. As promised, I hung out one night in a fitted tee and did NOT cover my stomach once. And, I did it for four HOURS. And, I did it while hanging out with 3 friends. Did you hear that last part? I hung out with three friends for four hours in a fitted tee shirt and did not cover my stomach ONCE. But, boy, did I think about it! Surprisingly, no one said, “Hey, Claire, that belly roll is pretty nasty. Could you cover it?” Do you know what I was reminded of? My friends like me for me, not how I look. They aren’t hanging out with me because of my figure. They’re hanging out with me because they like www.WichitaFamily.com
my personality – albeit goofy. No one starred, no one gaped, no one pointed and laughed. And, no, I really didn’t expect THAT kind of behavior…I guess I don’t know what I thought would happen. But the world didn’t end and I eventually forgot I was worried about it. Yes, I have been putting more time in the gym working on my abs. Yes, I’m pleased with the results. I got a cold and didn’t go to the gym for two weeks and was okay with it and what it was or wasn’t doing to my body. The important thing was to get well. I ate rotten around the holidays and I ENJOYED IT. Guilt Free. That is a huge step for me. HUGE. I started back to the gym Christmas Eve and went every day.
Of course we’re all going to splurge during the holidays. My gift to myself this year was to not beat myself up. Splurging and enjoying great food with family and friends is a big part of the holiday. I am proud of myself for picking myself back up, dusting off and getting back in the gym and getting back to sensible eating. January is here. What am I going to work on this month? An extra 20 minutes a day at the gym. I can find 20 minutes. Not covering up in a fitted shirt (more than once). Eating better every day. Reminding myself that I’m on the right track. And, I think I might just start planning a beach vacation for late summer.

Losing pounds and inches one cookie at a time
With the help of Smart for Life, a locally-owned company offering a nationally-renowned diet system and diet products, Newton resident Chris Hedrick and Wichitan Kathy Summers are reaping the rewards, and they have the bodies to prove it.
L
osing weight and getting healthy isn't all fun and games, it takes hard work and dedication. But with the professionals at Smart for Life behind you, that work can get a whole lot more enjoyable. Smart for Life—located at 6611 East Central, Ste B in Wichita, and reachable by phone at 316-295-2900—is a locally-owned company that offers a nationally-renowned diet system and diet products to the area. Smart for Life is a diet that incorporates convenient, healthy meals in the form of cookies that are eaten every couple of hours, accompanied by water or noncaloric beverage of choice. The cookies serve as six small meals during the day then a healthy, high-protein, lowfat dinner of your choice is enjoyed in the evening, consisting of lean protein and 2 to 5 servings of vegetables and salad. Participants are monitored by a doctor and weigh-in weekly for accountability. Dieters lose an average of 12 to 15 pounds in a four-week period, said Smart for Life owner, Michelle Davidson, but more importantly, they learn the keys of how to maintain from day one from the habits created while on the program, all encouraging a healthy lifestyle.
10 Wichita Family | JANUARY 2010
Feeling better and much lighter Newton resident Chris Hedrick had tried several diets over the years. After being unsuccessful and unhappy with results from diet pills and point system diets, she heard about Smart for Life and decided to give it a try. “When I heard that it was doctor supervised, that was a drawing card for me,” she said. Hedrick had a tendency to have high blood pressure and other health issues such as high cholesterol before the diet. After learning that there was a medical program with Smart for Life, Hedrick was encouraged. Hedrick met with the medical director of Smart For Life of Wichita, James Seberger, M.D., Ph.D, in January 2009 and began the diet. Dr. Seberger has a degree in biochemistry and molecular biology along with a medical degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Pair the medical background with a life-long interest in nutrition and health and Smart For Life participants in Wichita have quite the perfect setup.
written by Jessica Lindsey photos by Camera Angles, LTD “Our goal at Smart for Life is to identify the stress, eating and living patterns which are leading to our obesity and early demise,” said Dr. Seberger. “On the medical program we use a special scale to measure fat mass and fat free mass. This allows us to carefully control calories, protein and activity. We can then adjust these to make a person increase their lean body weight while decreasing fat mass.” Hedrick could tell right away that the support she found in the weekly weighin and the supervision by the doctor was very beneficial. “At one point I got to a place where I plateaued,” said Hedrick. “I had been doing more strength training and cardio. Because they were weighing me on their scales that had Body Mass Index (measuring fat mass, fat free mass and water weight), they were able to tell me that I was gaining muscle mass and losing weight.” The weekly support and knowledgeable staff helped Hedrick to remain motivated throughout the months she was on the diet. Hedrick ate the recommended amount of cookies each day, drank plenty of water, exercised, and ate a healthy www.WichitaFamily.com
dinner. The doctor instructs when to add exercise into the program, usually near the goal weight. “I realized I was not drinking as much water as I should have been,” said Hedrick. “And growing up on a farm in Western Kansas, I ate a lot of red meat, cheese and milk. I retrained my thinking about how I eat.”
BEFORE
AFTER
After about four months on the diet, Hedrick had lost 35 pounds and blood work showed that her cholesterol had gone down into normal range. Hedrick has been off the diet products completely and maintaining her weight since September 2009. “I am much more aware of portion sizes and calories and I continue with my exercise program,” said Hedrick. “What I really liked getting out of this whole episode is the fact that I feel healthier and that I am healthier and I feel like it helped motivate me to keep on an exercise routine.”
BEFORE
AFTER
Enjoying every bite Similarly to Hedrick, Wichitan Kathy Summers has appreciated the medical backing, the constant support and the new way of thinking about food. “I like it that when I go into Smart for Life I feel like I get their undivided attention,” said Summers. Possibly just as exciting to Summers is the convenience of the diet and the confidence she has that she will be
able to maintain the loss. “I think the biggest thing to me—because I’ve lost more than this before but I’ve not
kept it off in the past—is that I feel like this time I have support and it’s helped me realize that there are easy things to cook, it doesn’t have to be about going out and eating or grabbing whatever is quick,” said Summers. Summers started the diet in June and by mid-December had lost more than 85 pounds. “I like it because I’m never hungry,” said Summers. “I eat a cookie or other Smart for Life product like a muffin or shake and eight ounces of water then do laundry at home or go to work. By the time I feel like I want something to munch on, not even being hungry, it’s time to have another cookie.” Summers said so much of her weight came from her convenience eating at restaurants, fast-food drive thru temptations, vending machine stops. Those habits also soaked up a lot of money, she is spending less per month on the diet than she was on her unhealthy

This is a concept Summers says she will carry through to her regular diet once she is finished losing weight on Smart for Life. Summers also has enjoyed the new recipes that she receives each week when she visits Smart for Life to weighin. She has experimented with several new things that she otherwise wouldn’t have tried to cook and she is excited about change in her desires. “Everything tastes so good,” said Summers. “It seems like when you don’t eat sweets, things just taste better. I haven’t missed the sweets and fast food doesn’t even sound good anymore.” The only thing Summers has been frustrated with is her need to constantly update her wardrobe. “I buy four pairs of pants then three weeks later they don’t fit,” joked Summers. Through Smart for Life, Summers, Hedrick, and the many other local success stories, are realizing what contributes to their unhealthy eating and they’re discovering how to change those habits. “To see someone come in who may be at their lowest point and their highest weight, then to see the transformation, to see their confidence and their self esteem rise, to see that person come into their own and come out of their shell of all the extra weight they were carrying around,” said Davidson. “You can tell they’re happier people. That’s the absolute best part of all of it, the transformation of people becoming happier with who they are.” www.WichitaFamily.com www.WichitaFamily.com
Boredom Busters
Keeping your workouts interesting to stave off monotony
I
t happens to you every time. You resolve to get fit at the start of the New Year, you work out regularly and then you lose steam. You revert to old habits, exercising whenever you feel like it. The primary cause of your behavior: not a lack of self-discipline but plain old boredom. You get tired of exercising and plop down in front of the TV instead.
By Tresa Erickson want to lose 10 pounds or run three miles. These are goals you can work up to a little at a time. You can run a quarter of a mile one week, a half of a mile the next two weeks, a mile the next four weeks, and so forth, until you reach your three-mile goal. Once you reach your long-term goals, make sure you find new ones to keep the momentum
going. Fighting exercise boredom is not easy. It can be done, however. Change is key, and to stay motivated, you need to set some long-term goals and focus on all of the rewards you reap from exercising.
Exercise boredom is not uncommon. Many people, including die-hard fitness buffs, experience it from to time. Fortunately, there are several ways to combat it. First, you need to review your workout routine and pinpoint exactly what it is that bores you. Are you tired of doing the same old exercises at the same old time in the same old place day in and day out? Yeah? Well then, it’s time to make some changes. Run in the morning on some days around your neighborhood and swim in the evening on others at the gym. Vary your routine and keep boredom at bay. To ensure your workouts are interesting, incorporate gadgets and entertainment into them. Get a heart-rate monitor and use it during your workouts to make sure you are reaching your potential. Watch some TV or listen to some music to make your workouts fun. Small changes in your exercise routine, whether in activity, timing, location and even frequency and duration, can do wonders for combating boredom. None of it, however, may be enough. You may need to make bigger changes, like trying an adventurous sport, participating in a team sport or finding an exercise buddy. Often people become bored with exercise because they do it alone. Time flies much faster when you have someone to talk to while you are exercising. A partner can also keep you motivated. Failing to show up for a workout is a lot harder when someone is waiting for you. Even with all of these changes in your exercise routine, you may still suffer some boredom from time to time. To keep yourself motivated, find something to shoot for. Think about what it is that you want to get from exercising and set some long-term goals. Perhaps you www.WichitaFamily.com

This is the second year the company provided gifts to students. Last year, they donated toys to Lincoln Elementary. Boys at Adams Elementary had a chance to look nice before the holidays with a free haircut. T.J. Everett, a barber at Tangles Unlimited offered to give the students free haircuts at the school. Everett, who has a son who attends Adams, offered his services for families who may not be able to afford to get haircuts for their sons. He gave haircuts to about a dozen students on December
21, the first day of the winter break, and families were glad to come back to the school to take advantage of his offer. “This is the season of giving and I wanted to give something to the kids and to their families,” Everett said. “When they look good, they feel good and I want to put a smile on their faces.” “I’m looking sharp,” said Isaiah Brown, kindergarten student, while he was in the middle of getting his hair cut.
Our students always step up for this,” said Major Andy Trager, Leadership instructor at Pleasant Valley. Trager is one of the organizers of the toy drive. “Our students know that their donations give so many children a chance to have a great Christmas. It’s heartwarming to see our students put others before themselves,” Trager said.
Mayberry students declare battle with marshmallows
E
ighth-grade students at Mayberry Cultural and Fine Arts Magnet made a mess with marshmallows and their teacher didn’t mind. Students in John Loos’ physics class created devices that could shoot small marshmallows across the classroom. Students designed and built their own catapults, sling shots, air cannons and other items to fire the marshmallows. Some students used bike pumps, compressed air, their own breath or muscles to get them to fly across the room. Teams of students declared war on www.WichitaFamily.com
each other and when a team got three marshmallows in another team’s bowl, the first team would take over and both would try to conquer another team until there was only one team left. The students used the battle to practice trajectory, precision and accuracy while firing their marshmallow missiles. “It’s a fun way for them to grasp a lot of complex math, engineering and physics concepts,” Loos said. “And they don’t mind picking up all the marshmallows off the floor at the end.” Wichita Family | JANUARY 2010
