I
t’s about this time of year that my family seems to experience a lull in our schedule. I know it goes against so much of what society is pushing us towards, but I personally enjoy the downtime.

I hear so much about how it’s good to be busy, good to have your kids involved in every activity under the sun, good to spend more time in the car than around your dining room table, etc. You get the idea. While the constant busyness may work well for some families, I see so much more growth and joy in my kids when we spend more time at home as a family. I know each family is different. Personalities and priorities vary from one family to the next. I’m not one to judge the happiness or health of other families, but I am learning what works best for my household and that involves saying “no” to quite a few requests for what could turn out to be major time-suckers. Kids grow up, priorities and needs change and schedules will change right along with that. For now, my kids are young and I want to take this time in their lives to lay a strong foundation for what our family values most. The days can be long but the years are short. We only have a small window of time to help form these kiddos, to encourage them, to help them realize their God-given skills and passions. I try to remember that when we receive requests to be all over town at activities every evening of the week. My kids each participate in sports, have recently started piano lessons, they have school and church events. We have tried to be intentional about not over scheduling. Of course, we are not always successful in that attempt, but we are trying. At Wichita Family Magazine we know that families have a variety of different interests, different values and differing levels of comfort as far as busy-ness goes. We’re hoping to introduce readers to a wide range of local events and organizations with the hope that something will catch your eye. Our advertisers are businesses and groups that also are aiming to serve your family in some way. In this issue you’ll find the results of our annual Best for Family survey. You’ll likely see some places that you have frequented and possibly some ideas for new businesses or events for your family to experience. In the coming months, we’re wanting to provide even more ideas for your family and friends to try. With the summer coming up, we want to know what local activities your family is looking forward to. Are there certain camps, shows, shops or special events that you can’t wait to take your kids to? Is there something you’d like to see us feature in upcoming issues? Is there an awesome event that we should be at to take photos? Or maybe you’re planning a family-focused activity and you’d like to promote it in our magazine. Let us know, we’d love to hear from you. Email me at jessica@wichitafamily. com and let us know the details. Enjoy your March and take time to focus on your family, in whatever way works best for you!

(Family Features) Staying indoors so much during the winter months can create clutter and mess around the house. But you can wake up and spruce up a tired-looking home with a few simple cleaning and organizing routines. Here are some tips and tricks for making your home spring-clean right now, one room at a time.
Living Room
Window blinds collect dust and dust mites all winter. To clean plastic blinds, add Greased Lightning to tub water. Remove blinds and let them soak in the tub. Clean them with a well-bristled brush, then let them dry and rehang them. Remove fabric window coverings and clean as needed. Use a feather duster around window frames to remove cobwebs and dust. Freshen up carpets by sprinkling baking soda on them, letting it sit for 30 minutes, then vacuuming. Use an adhesive lint roller to get the dust off of fabric lampshades. Try a new furniture arrangement to freshen up the look of the room. When you need to move heavy pieces of furniture across uncarpeted floors, fold two clean towels, put one under each
end of the furniture piece, then slide it across the floor. Kitchen Clean out the refrigerator and freezer, making sure to get rid of all expired products and old leftovers. Remove shelving and drawers and wipe them down using mild soapy water. Tackle your oven, inside and out. If your oven is self-cleaning, set it in the selfcleaning mode. Consult your manual for an estimated cleaning time. If your oven is not a self-cleaning appliance, use the cleaning solution to wipe away baked on grease and grime. Remember to make sure the oven is cool before applying the solution. Don’t forget to clean your dishwasher, too. Remove trapped food particles from the bottom and around any moving parts. Pour a cup of vinegar into the empty dishwasher and run it to clean the inside. Bedrooms Launder bed linens — including dust ruffles, bedspreads and pillow shams. Move furniture around so you can vacuum underneath and get rid of any dust bunnies that might have accumulated.
Now’s a great time to clean out clothes closets. Empty closets to vacuum and dust inside. Then, before putting clothes back, sort through them and get rid of those items that no longer fit or that you don’t wear anymore. Clean blinds, light fixtures and ceiling fans. Wipe smudges off of light switch covers and door frames, too. Bathroom Wipe down and disinfect all fixtures. Remember lighting fixtures, too. Carefully remove glass fixtures and clean with warm, soapy water. Let them dry thoroughly before reattaching. Sort through products and discard or recycle old bottles and containers. Get rid of excess clutter in your bathroom cabinets. You can use Greased Lightning to remove grease, grime, mildew stains and soap scum from your bathroom surfaces, including tubs, sinks, toilets, counters and baseboards. To get additional tips to spruce up your home, as well as coupons from Greased Lightning, Like them on Facebook, or visit www.glcleans.com.

BEST FOR FAMILY ask someone what you should order, there’s a good chance that you’ll be told to try the ribs. But there’s also a good chance that you’ll be advised to load up on the brisket. Oh wait, the pulled pork was pretty awesome, too. Actually, you can’t really go wrong with any menu item. That’s Hog Wild’s strength. The place consistently serves one amazing item after another, at least that’s what Wichita Family readers are saying.
Good old food like Grandma used to make, that’s what you find at Riverside Cafe. The comfortable, warm atmosphere is full of regulars and newcomers are welcomed like family as well. This is down-home cooking at it’s best. Chicken fried steak, okra, pie, patty melts and mouthwatering breakfasts dishes that are served all day. The prices are affordable and portions are generous.

There was a time not too long ago that if you wanted a Starbucks coffee in Wichita, you had to head to the nearest Barnes and Noble and visit the cafe inside. Well, that’s no longer the case and with nearly 20 Starbucks stores around the city, including those inside Dillon’s and Target stores, there are many convenient locations at which to grab a frappuccino, macchiato or other specialty coffee.
Jason’s Deli has options for just about anyone. There’s an enormous salad bar that is ripe for the picking and seems to be nearly always full and being reloaded. The menu has hot and cold sandwiches, soups, salads, baked potatoes and more. Jason’s Deli also has been great about offering vegetarian, organic and now gluten-free choices for diners who have more specific diets. Perhaps most important, don’t leave without your free ice cream!

He personally delivered more than 500 blankets and other necessities during a recent trip back to India and arranged for PovSolve to sponsor feeding session for more than 700 people. PovSolve has also helped feed hundreds of Wichitans at a local shelter. “It is amazing how much your heart can light up when you see the joy on someone’s face that you are helping,” he said.
As a state honoree, Bhakta will receive a $1,000 award, an engraved silver medallion and an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. for a series of national recognition events starting in May. Different
Than Any Other Tanganyika has created a Wildlife Park that breaks the mold of typical zoos. The grounds are open and inviting, providing the ultimate place for animals and people to be together in harmony. Walk with the Kangaroos, feed Rainbow Lorikeets and African tortoises, visit the Giraffe feeding post or swing over to Lemur Island and feed the Ring-tailed lemurs, or go for a stroll atop a camel. Now you can even feed the Indian rhinos and ride the horses.
