ay always seems to be such a crazy and exciting time around here. Graduations, Mother’s Day, my oldest child’s birthday, school is ending and spring activities are wrapping up. Plus we’re already focused on finding fun and entertaining things to do in and around Wichita this summer. If you need something to on Mother’s Day this year, it’s the perfect time to explore Botanica with spring perennials in bloom and the best part is that admission on Mother’s Day is free for everyone! The Sedgwick County Zoo also offers a Mother’s Day deal where all moms are admitted free when accompanied by a paying child. Do you have a Mother’s Day tradition or do you know of other deals that area families would enjoy on that Sunday? If so, share it with us on Facebook! In this month’s issue we’re printing our THIRD-ANNUAL Cheap Eats list! This super-popular list is a compilation of area restaurants that offer free or discounted meals for kids. It’s definitely a list you want to keep posted on your fridge or even in your car, you’ll get a ton of use out of it! Wichita Family Magazine is also excited to be involved in the FirstAnnual f.i.t. family 5K. The event, hosted by Mommy Movement Fitness, will be held at the Waterfront on Sunday, May 15 at 3 p.m. There is a 5K run and a ½ mile free kids run. W

ichita Mom Lezlie Miles, along with her husband Brent, own and operate a successful spa in east Wichita that has grown steadily over the past several years and is expanding to a second location in Derby. Lezlie and Brent opened Serenity Mind Body Spa about 7 years ago. In the beginning stages, Lezlie taught high school chemistry in the mornings and ran Serenity in the afternoons and Saturdays. As the business grew, Lezlie was able to quit teaching and focus solely on Serenity.

But in addition to her thriving business, it's the respect and pride that shown in Lezlie's daughter Tristen's nomination of her mom to be recognized as a Wichita Family Magazine Mompreneur that was truly impressive. “I have seen everything from struggles to success,” said Tristen in an email. “I would never have believed that my own mother would own something so amazing and exciting.” Tristen went on to include the words that any working mom or business owner works hard to accomplish in their home life, a sense of balance for their children. “On top of everything she does for Serenity, she always has time for me and my brother,” said Tristen. “My mom has taught us that anything is possible and to believe in ourselves. She is truly amazing.” The sense of respect and admiration is a generational attribute in the Miles family as Lezlie herself credited her parents as being the examples that helped her get to where she is today. “A am extremely lucky to have parents who were such great role models growing up,” said Lezlie. “Both were educators and owned several businesses as well. I was taught the importance of hard work and responsibilities, but most importantly that family comes first.” She doesn't claim to be an expert on balancing work and family, but Lezlie knows her priorities and keeping those straight are important to her. “Sometimes you have to just drop everything and go to your family,” she said. “There is always tomorrow for that task to be done.” Lezlie also knows that taking care of herself, staying organized

and learning when to ask for help and when to say no make a big difference. “Lastly, just remember the 3 p's, persistence, patience and prayer, will get you through every time,” she said. Serenity Mind Body Spa has grown from a small business with two massage therapists to a 7-room spa with services such as facials, waxing, body sculpting and of course a variety of massages with a staff of 18 people. “I loved the idea of helping people with pain and stress,” said Lezlie about starting the business. “Owning the spa is a true joy. I love all aspects of running a business. The www.WichitaFamily.com

And Lezlie doesn't do it alone, her family plays a big role in the business as well. “My husband is my entrepreneur inspiration,” she said. “If it hadn't been for his vision we would not have this business. I have two amazing children, Kaylan who is 18 and Tristen who is 13. These two are my strength. They understand when there are times that I need their help and they are right there to pitch in and do what needs to be done.” Kaylan will head to college in the fall to become a commercial pilot and Tristen says that someday she would like to get a business degree and own a business of her own. Lezlie and her family have figured out what works for them and how to continue to put family first while also running a successful business. “Running a business changes your life in so many ways. Some days our house is complete chaos,” joked Lezlie, “and I have given up the notions that my home will be spotless and we will eat dinner at the same time every evening. We have learned to take turns doing laundry and cooking, etc. I am so blessed that my children are flexible. Our life may not be for everyone, but it works well for my family.”

Do you like to fish? If so, you probably have a favorite fishing hole. You might also enjoy going to a fishing derby. Many communities offer them for adults and kids. Fishing derbies are usually open to experts as well as beginners. In addition to giving anglers the chance to fish together, fishing derbies allow them to compete in some contests and learn more about the sport and places to fish in the area. Whether you fish a little or a lot, a fishing derby can be a great place to go. Check with your parents and see if there is one near you.

News and information from our partners at Wichita Public Schools Mayberry choir students to perform at Lincoln Center

East student receives McIlwaine Foundation Scholarship Jared Jamis, senior at East High School, was surprised on March 15 with the Charles and Joanne McIlwaine Foundation Scholarship. The Foundation gave Jamis a $40,000 scholarship to the University of Kansas. Jamis was selected for the scholarship because he is an East student, an Eagle Scout, and is planning to attend KU. Charles McIlwaine was a 1957 graduate of East, graduated from KU and was an Eagle Scout. The Foundation also selected Jamis based on his academic record and extra-curricular activities. “This is a big honor, I don’t know what else to say,” said Jamis who admitted he was surprised by the scholarship announcement.

wenty-four choir students from Mayberry performed at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City. The students were selected to be a part of a larger ensemble that featured middle school students from across the country performing in one large choir. Mayberry’s choir was selected to be part of the concert based on the program’s reputation and merits. The students performed songs by wellknown composer Eric Whitacre, who will also conduct the group

“This is a huge honor,” said Mayberry choir director Danny Darrington. “We work very hard and this invitation validates what we do. I am very excited for my students to have this experience.” “Music is an important part of these students’ lives, and I’m glad their talents are letting them have this experience,” he said.

Jamis plans to major in Mechanical Engineering and wants to pursue a career in the auto industry designing “faster cars.” This is the second year the Foundation has given a scholarship. You have heard about it,

NOW IT IS TIME TO SEE IT!

Different

Than Any Other Tanganyika has created a Wildlife Park that breaks the mold of typical zoos. The grounds are open and inviting, providing the ultimate place for animals and people to be together in harmony. Walk with the Kangaroos, feed Rainbow Lorikeets and African tortoises, visit the Giraffe feeding post or swing over to Lemur Island and feed the Ring-tailed lemurs, or go for a stroll atop a camel. Now you can even feed the Indian rhinos and ride the horses.
