News and information from our partners at Wichita Public Schools North named AVID National Demonstration School North High School AVID students Isaias Trejo, Aakem Stephens and Jessica Cepeda celebrate their school being named a National Demonstration School.

N

orth named AVID National Demonstration School North High School has once again been named an AVID National Demonstration School. By earning the National Demonstration School recognition, schools from across the country who are interested in an AVID program can visit North to learn how to successfully implement the program. Fewer than 50 schools out of 4,700 with AVID programs are named Demonstration Schools. AVID recognized North as one of the top three programs in the country and said the school is recognized

throughout the AVID community as one of the best demonstration schools in terms of outcomes, leadership, schoolwide successes and rigor. A case study showing the journey to school-wide AVID at North continues to be used at AVID’s national training seminars. This is the tenth year that AVID has been at North. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college prep program designed for students who have the potential, but who traditionally may not see college as a possibility. Each student involved in AVID takes an AVID elective

E

ast High School’s Symphony Orchestra was invited to perform at the prestigious Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. East’s Orchestra was one of eight orchestras selected to perform from dozens of orchestras from across the country that applied. The orchestra performed on December 17. “This is the finest group of musicians I have ever had assembled under my baton. I had no doubt that they would perform at the highest level possible, and they did not disappoint,” said Eric Crawford, orchestra teacher at East. www.WichitaFamily.com

“They are simply the best, and deserve to be treated as such.” The Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic is the largest and most prestigious professional music educators’ conference in the world. It is attended by over 15,000 people each year from across the U.S. and more than 30 countries. To be invited to perform at this conference is among the highest distinctions that an orchestra can achieve. East’s Symphony Orchestra and Robinson Middle School’s orchestra have previously performed at the clinic.

B

ostic Traditional Magnet has received the Governor’s Achievement Award for their students’ performance on the Kansas State Assessments. Bostic was selected for the award because the school achieved Standard of Excellence in both reading and math for 2010, was in the top 5 percent in Kansas in both reading and math, and made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in both reading and math for 2010 along with having good attendance.

Dessert:

Caffe Moderne: (www.caffemoderne.com)

300 N. Mead, Ste. 108, Wichita, KS, 67202. 316-260-1199. Caffe Moderne, opened in 2007 by owner Janet Rine, is a casual to sit with friends and family and enjoy custom roasted coffees, a cocktail, great food and desserts. The cozy atmosphere and numerous flavors of Gelato make this place a must-try spot. The range of prices are from $3.50 for on of Caffe Moderne’s “Sweet Features” to $6.00 for a double dip of Gelato. General Manager Carol Lujano explains the appeal of Gelato and some of the other unique desserts that can only be found at Caffe Moderne: “The difference between ice cream and Gelato is that Gelato has less butterfat than ice cream. Gelato is also kept at a slightly higher temperature than ice cream which aids in maintaining its creamy consistency. Another major difference between ice cream and Gelato is that it uses pure and fresh ingredients and can be consumed directly after production. “All of these factors give Gelato an intense, clean perception of the flavor. Please note that all the ingredients used in making Gelato are top quality, imported straight from Italy or bought fresh. Our Gelato is handmade fresh daily so that means we change the flavors from day to day with the exception of our staple flavors. Our staple Gelato flavors are: Coconut, Vanilla, Chocolate, Bacio, Peanut Butter Chocolate Chunk, Strawberry, and Tiramsu. We offer a total of 15 flavors on a daily basis which includes our staple flavors. We also sell Gelato by the pint at $13 or $20 for a quart.”
