As someone who was born and raised in Wichita and it's suburbs, I feel I have a connection to this city that will never be broken. I had the opportunity with a previous job to travel the United States, and after being gone for half of the year last year, I really grew to appreciate our thriving metropolis. There are so many wonderful cities that this country has to offer, and I have the privilege of living in the one that is “halfway to everywhere.” As a proud graduate of Wichita State University, I have formal training in graphic design, writing, production, and sales. My true education however comes from being a mother. I am genuinely blessed to learn from the most loving and supportive husband I could have ever asked for, and the three greatest daughters in the world. (Ok, I may be a little biased) Julianne (12), Megan (10), and Laci (6) are my true inspiration, teaching me what I can, and can't handle on a daily basis.

As we move into the second half of 2012, we at WF are busy mapping out and brainstorming ideas to keep you, our readers, inspired. In the next few months, you may notice a few changes. Keep an eye out for new products to help you and your student prepare for the new school year. We will also be talking about new innovations in technology, and baby products! This issue is devoted to summer health. The doctors at Riordan clinic decipher the mystery behind their dome shaped buildings, and illustrate to us the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. We also have suggestions on how to keep your family cool this summer, and announce our contest for the month!

f you’ve driven on I-96 in your lifetime, chances are you’ve asked yourself, what are those strange buildings just off I-96 and Hillside? A pyramid and domed buildings built in the middle of a cornfield looks like something out of a science fiction film and it certainly attracts some attention. The visionary’s behind these amazing buildings were looking for something original and unique, but it’s what’s inside that has people talking.

Hugh Riordan, a medical doctor, along with the help of philanthropist Olive Garvey, started The Riordan Clinic in 1974. The imaginative domed buildings where the clinic resides today were built in 1984.

Some may think that the focus of The Riordan Clinic is holistic medicine.

The truth is that these doctors can, and do prescribe typical western medications when they are needed.

Some medications however come with considerable side effects.

Who shared ideas with me for some healthy lunches and afternoon snacks.

She explained that though some may use the excuse that eating healthy is more expensive, it’s really not.

For example: Apples have an average cost of $2 per pound. A jar of peanut

butter could run someone around $3 depending on the brand and type.

These together make a very low-cost, healthy snack, with no excuse. Much less expensive per serving than a box of cookies.

You may think, “easier said than done.”

I was blown away by the fact that because these doctors live and breath what they preach, their insurance has dropped by 25%. It’s much easier to take advise from someone who lives the lifestyle for themselves.

Meet the Doctors The Riordan Clinic currently has three doctors on staff. They have collectively received many awards and accolades for their research and accomplishments.

Hundreds of doctors from around the world have come to train with the physicians at the Riordan Clinic.

Dr. Charles Hinshaw, Jr. began working with the clinic when it opened in 1975.

He was responsible for the opening of what is now the laboratory at the Riordan Clinic.

The laboratory focused on so much more than others as the doctors aimed their attention on testing patients nutritional levels. Dr. Hinshaw then established

a private practice in Environmental Medicine in 1984 but returned to the Riordan Clinic in 2010.

As mentioned earlier, Dr. Hunninghake is the Chief Medical Officer of the Clinic. Dr. Hunninghake lectures nationally and internationally on a range of topics including IVC (Intravenous Vitamin C) and Cancer. Dr. Hunninghake, who is a graduate of the University of Kansas School of Medicine, trained alongside Dr. Hugh Riordan for 17 years.

Dr. Jennifer Kaumeyer came to the clinic after operating a successful naturopathic clinic in Raleigh, NC for three years. Although Dr. Kaumeyer treats all conditions, she is especially interested in the treatment of hormone imbalances and gastrointestinal issues. She also lectures locally on a variety of topics.

The Patients Doctors aren’t the only ones who have traveled from around the world to visit the clinic, patients have as well.

With their “co-learning” philosophy, many patients find that these docs spend as much time as you need to answer your questions and to make sure you know exactly what you’re dealing with.

Carol Reynolds has been a patient of the Riordan Clinic for three years.

From the District Gardiner wins Fuel Up to Play 60 Activity Challenge

Kansas City Chiefs’ mascot KC Wolf congratulates Gardiner Elementary students for being the Kansas Grand Prize winner in the Fuel Up to Play 60 Physical Activity Challenge.

Gardiner Elementary was named the Kansas Grand Prize winner in the Fuel Up to Play 60 Physical Activity Challenge.

This year’s challenge encouraged students to showcase how they get active each day in school. The students created a video that demonstrated how they enacted the challenge at their school.

The school created Recess Activity Zones with activities like basketball, jump rope and walking with pedometers.

Eddie Kennison, along with the Chiefs mascot, KC Wolf and Byron Lehman of the Midwest Dairy Council visited the school during a special assembly to congratulate the students. The Fuel Up to Play 60 program, sponsored by the National Football League and the Midwest Dairy Council, encourages students to be active for at least 60 minutes each day and to eat healthy foods.

New school names approved for three buildings

The Board of Education voted unanimously to name two brand-new schools that will take effect immediately.

The name for the new southeast quadrant K-8 school, located at 2055 S. 143rd St East, is Christa McAuliffe Academy.

Christa McAuliffe was a high school teacher from Concord, New Hampshire who was selected out of more than 11,000 applicants for NASA’s Teacher in Space Program aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger. She was scheduled to teach two lessons from space via satellite to schools across the U.S. Her life was cut short on January 28, 1986 when the Challenger exploded after launch, killing all on board. The legacy of the crew’s mission to educate and inspire lives on with many educational programs designed to spur students’ interest in science.

The name of the new Lewis/South Elementary, located at 3030 S. Osage, is James Enders Elementary School. A new name was recommended as Lewis and Emerson Open Magnets combine to create a new and unique learning environment for students. The new school remains an open magnet.

James Enders was a social studies and physical education teacher in the Wichita Public Schools, teaching 10 | Wichita Family

at Truesdell Middle School for the majority of his career until his retirement in 1991. He was known as “Coach” to many students on the south side of

Wichita and also devoted his time to coach tennis at South High School. He dedicated himself to being a mentor to all students.

and most harmful during midday, so it’s best to plan indoor activities then. If this is not possible, seek shade under a tree, an umbrella, or a pop-up tent. Use these options to prevent sunburn, not to seek relief after it’s happened.

Cover up. Clothing that covers your child’s skin helps protect against UV rays. Although a long-sleeved shirt and long pants with a tight weave are best, they aren’t always practical. A T-shirt, long shorts, or a beach cover-up are good choices, too—but it’s wise to double up on protection by applying sunscreen or keeping your child in the shade when possible. n

Get a hat. Hats that shade the face, scalp, ears, and neck are easy to use and give great protection. Baseball caps are popular among kids, but they don’t protect their ears and neck. If your child chooses a cap, be sure to protect exposed areas with sunscreen n
