o the summer is gone and we’re already settling in for a busy fall. September at my house is full of an abundance of birthdays, mine and my hubby’s wedding anniversary and many other annual traditions.
Grandparents Day falls in September and it’s always a fun way to celebrate a relationship that is very special in so many families. Check out a story about a set of local grandparents who are making the most of their time with their grandkids and learn about a company that could help your family take steps to making the relationship “grand.” The local family featured in the grandparents story has an amazing tradition called, “Cousins Camp,” something I would love to do someday with my own grandchildren. I’m trying to convince my own parents and in-laws that they need to establish Cousins Camp right away! I love the idea of my children and their cousins growing up close with each other and with their grandparents, no matter the distance they may live away from each other over the years. Our Mompreneur feature is back this month featuring a local artist. We’re loving all the suggestions we get from readers as to who we should feature next. Keep them coming! Our monthly, “Families Around Town” is in this issue as well, showing some local kids having fun at The Museum of World Treasures. These kids scoured every floor of the Museum, looking for answers to the scavenger hunt questions. At the end, they were awarded a shark’s tooth for all of their hard work. Don’t be mistaken, the scavenger hunt took a lot of concentration and determination and these kids were very proud of themselves in the end! Next month we’ll feature another much-loved teacher that was nominated by a Wichita Family reader. Do you have a teacher that you want to be recognized in our Feature a Teacher section? Nominate them by emailing Jessica@WichitaFamily.com. What have you enjoyed about Wichita Family? What would you like to see in upcoming issues? Drop us an email and let us know. And keep sending your cute pictures of where you’ve taken Wichita Family Magazine!

eing a mom is hard work in and of itself and local mom Dale Shubert is the first to admit that. Shubert, a mother of 2, is a certified childbirth educator who has a passion for art and for the beauty of motherhood. This passion inspired her to start a challenging and unique business that provides area families with a visual reminder of a special time in their lives. Buddha Bellies Maternity Casting Service provides just what the name suggests, an artistic cast of a woman’s pregnant belly. It was just as Shubert was finishing up a bachelor degree in art at Newman University that she found the inspiration for her business.

Artistic Casts of Pregnancy www.buddhabelliesmaternitycastings.com
“(I) was charged with the assignment of a creative sculpture project for one of my classes,” she said. “My sculpture project became an extension of my work as a certified childbirth educator. Since hearing about pregnancy casting and viewing some examples of this art online from Colorado, California, Florida and Europe, I decided that I wanted to try it. I mentioned my class project to some of my students and they helped me out, in return receiving an individually crafted replica of their pregnancy shape. I was hooked. It was such a pleasure to produce this unique keepsake for momsto-be that I decided to meld my love of art with my passion for childbirth education and Buddha Bellies Maternity Casting Service was born. My passion is painting and this is like painting on a ‘living’ canvas, just an awesome experience.” After working to cast a full torso—which takes 30 to 40 minutes—or the belly only—about 20 to 30 minutes— Shubert transforms it into a work of art through her skillful painting. She spends an average of 15 hours on each casting. Shubert, who is a self-described sucker for kids and animals, has been married for 28 years to her husband David, currently the Dean of Undergraduate Studies and Professor of Chemistry at Newman University. As a stay-at-home mom first and foremost, Shubert says she has made it a priority to keep her kids as a part of the process of forming her business. “It’s good for kids to see the process, the development, you pass on a bit of that spirit and confidence and willingness to take a risk to them,” said Shubert. “That can be an important gift to them as they grow into 6 | Wichita Family
adults, to see a confident mom. One that is there for them but, also, has another side. It makes my kids proud.” Check out Shubert’s website, buddhabelliesmaternitycastings.com, for information and more photos of her work.

ordon Parks Academy has been authorized as an International Baccalaureate® World School Primary Years Programme. The school went through a rigorous application and staff development process with the International Baccalaureate® Organization for the past three years to earn the prestigious distinction. Gordon Parks Academy was named an IB World School Middle Years Programme in November. Gordon Parks Academy is the only school in Kansas to have both a Primary Years and Middle Years IB Program. “The rigorous training and hard work 8 | Wichita Family
has paid off,” said principal Stephanie Stovall. “We are excited about the benefits that this program will provide our students, family and the Wichita Community. I want to thank the students and the staff for achieving this amazing distinction for our school.” The Primary Years Programme (PYP) curriculum and concepts have been delivered to all students who attended the school since the school opened in 2008. The PYP uses the district’s curriculum to create real-world connections and encourages students to become critical and reflective thinkers. The teaching philosophies, frameworks
and core beliefs focus on developing skills, attitudes and beliefs that prepare students to be successful 21st Century learners. The IB PYP is designed to help students find a sense of belonging in the ever-changing and increasingly interrelated world around them and to foster a positive attitude to learning. Gordon Parks Academy is a neighborhood magnet with half of the seats reserved for neighborhood students and the other half from outside the neighborhood. All students are required to apply through the Magnet Admissions Office.

COPE summer program studied crime solving Students participating in the SCOPE summer program spent some of their time studying crimes. The students used science, math and teamwork to solve different mock crimes and to learn about law enforcement. Wichita Police Officer Bart Norton worked with students to collect fingerprints from different surfaces. Officer Norton allowed students to sit in his police cruiser, turn on the lights and sirens, and showed them tools officers use, including spike strips. The students also traveled to Wichita State University to learn about skeletons and how to draw scientific conclusions, including whether a skeleton is male or female and to determine approximate age of a person. SCOPE is a summer enrichment program for gifted students that provides innovative classes in art, science, math and history. Students in the SCOPE summer program examine different fingerprints.

‘Cousins Camp’
A local family holds it’s fifth annual event. Check out their story and about a brand new product that could help you kickstart a Cousins Camp of your own!
Five years ago Wichita grandparents Jan Higgins and her husband Donn saw an opportunity to create a tradition in their family that would promote relationships while also giving their children a break.
by Jessica Lindsey
The first annual “Cousins Camp” was designed so that the Higgins' grandchildren could spend time together and bond not only with their grandparents, but with each other in a setting away from their parents. As an added bonus, it gave the parents a break. Jan Higgins originally got the idea when Todd Carter, lead pastor of Westlink Christian Church, mentioned it in a sermon years ago. Time at Cousins Camp is spent building relationships by taking part in team-building activities, swimming, playing games and in general just spending intentional time together. “The whole concept was designed because the cousins didn't get to see each other very often,” said Jan Higgins. “We want them to grow up close and be bonded together. This summer we held our fifth Cousins Camp.” The week—which includes custom-made t-shirts—has a theme that it's based around. The camp usually is spent at the Higgins' house, though this past summer it was held in Galveston, Texas where the whole extended family went on vacation. Two years ago the whole thing was based on emotions. The Higgins put of posters of kids in different stages of emotions and talked about those stages and how to handle conflict. They even put up a tent in the living room and camped out all week. “It is really neat to see the camaraderie they have built,” said Jan. “I want them to stand up for each other. We are family and we want to leave a legacy and know that we stick together and stand up for each other no matter what. As they get older I'm looking forward to being able to take them to serve at the food bank or other projects like that.”
It takes a village The Higgins have nine grandchildren. 10 | Wichita Family

Six live in the Wichita area—Kayleigh (21), Heather (18), Laura (11) and Garrett (8) Huff, Landon (9) and Logan Larson (3)—while the other three—Noah (7), Riley (5) and Alexandra (3)—live in Oklahoma. “I believe that it does take more than just parents to raise a child,” said Jan. “We are building on what their parents are already teaching them. Grandparents don't have to play the role of disciplinarian like the parents do, but we have the chance to be their advocate, encourage them and give them unconditional love.” Jan, who works full time as Early Childhood Director at Westlink Christian Church, realizes that not all grandparents may have the energy or ability to host all of their grandchildren for a week. Jan suggests not focusing on the length of time or amount of things that you can do, but focus on the relationship and the bond.
“For grandparents that have young grandchildren, don't bite off more than you can chew,” said Jan. “A weekend trip, or maybe just an outing or day camp kind of thing. If the families live locally, maybe just do a fun day event or camp out in the living room. Kids just want to have fun and are so easy to please, just spending time with them playing blocks or playing on the floor with them. Start where you feel comfortable and build on it.”
Making it easy Another great idea is to use a product like GrandCamp Adventures. Introduced in November 2011, GrandCamp Adventures makes it easy for all generations to connect and have fun together. GrandCamp Adventures is a line of entertaining and educational products such as storybooks, music, games and
activities created by co-founders Patricia Babuka and Scott Schaefer to spark conversation and connect families. In a setting much like The Higgins' Cousins Camp, Patricia's in-laws created a GrandCamp in the early 1990's. “(Marjorie and Reuban Black) began inviting all of their grandchildren to visit their home for five, fun-filled days each summer. (They) called their event GrandCamp and made it a special time complete with a theme for the week, arts and crafts, outings and special guest educators, said Patricia. “The four Black siblings brought all the grandchildren to the Black’s home on a Sunday evening and came back for the GrandCamp closing ceremony the following Friday evening. In between, it was just the grandparents and grandchildren/cousins connecting with one another, learning and playing their way into connections that will last a lifetime. The informal, spontaneous atmosphere of the camp included grandkids who were potty-trained all the way up to college-age cousins who took time off from their summer jobs to spend with family. Now the inspired product line is available to families across the country to jumpstart their own special time with each other. “Everything GrandCamp Adventures offers is designed to enrich the lives of three generations in a family — grandparents, their children (the parent generation) and their grandchildren, said Patricia. “Grandparents can count on GrandCamp Adventures to make it fun and easy for them to connect with their grandchildren. Our games, crafts and activities are designed for multi-generational participation so that grandparents are part of the fun, not just spectators. We also provide stories and set the stage for grandparents to share their knowledge with their grandchildren and to tell their own stories. Products encourage all kinds activities, “Longbeard's Treasure Hunt, for example is appropriate for a variety of ages because of its picture and word clues and “Shake It Up, is a 3-in-1 handshake game with different levels of movements for younger and older participants.
It comes down to quality time
“Staying connected does not have to be expensive or elaborate, said Patricia. “We believe strongly that it is the simple things, spending playtime with the grandchildren rather than entertaining them, which makes the difference. Sitting on the porch talking about the bird in the tree or playing a game together is much more important to building the relationship than putting the grandchildren on a carnival ride and waving as they pass by. Starting from scratch with an idea and a passion like the Higgins family did is all it takes to establish the lifelong connection. And now with products like GrandCamp Adventures, anyone can plant that seed with just a little time and effort. “I want my grandchildren to know that they can come to me for anything, said Jan. “I want them to know that I will always love them and do what's best for them. You don't have to be perfect or have all the answers. The first time we had Cousins Camp Landon cried and wanted to go home every night, so we let him. But that's okay, the goal is to build the relationship and just go with the flow.
Check out GrandCamp Adventures at www. grandcamp.com. Interested in winning some GrandCamp products? Around Town Families
THE MUSEUM OF WORLD TREASURES
The Museum of World Treasures—located at 835 E. 1st St. in Old Town, Wichita, KS 67202—is the feature of this month’s Families Around Town. The Museum opened in 2001 and is a not-for-profit operation. Visitors will find three floors of history in a wide variety of visually-stunning collections. This museum can be appreciated by young and old alike. Check it out online before you go, www. worldtreasures.org. Do you know of an event or activity that you would like Wichita Family Magazine to consider featuring in this section? Email jessica@wichitafamily.com. Christian Raffinengo and Carson Arndt read details about a map at The Museum of World Treasures in search of answers for questions in The Museum’s scavenger hunt. There are scavenger hunt papers available for a variety of ages from Pre-Kindergarten up.
Alex Raffinengo and Colby Krein are mesmerized by the shiny gold items as part of the Kingdom of Majapahit exhibit at The Museum. A group of boys explores the question, What Happened When?, on a wheel in The Museum of World Treasures. The boys scoured every inch of the museum, learning about and enjoying years of history along the way.

You have heard about it,
NOW IT IS TIME TO SEE IT!
Different
Than Any Other Tanganyika has created a Wildlife Park that breaks the mold of typical zoos. The grounds are open and inviting, providing the ultimate place for animals and people to be together in harmony. Walk with the Kangaroos, feed Rainbow Lorikeets and African tortoises, visit the Giraffe feeding post or swing over to Lemur Island and feed the Ring-tailed lemurs, or go for a stroll atop a camel. Now you can even feed the Indian rhinos and ride the horses.
