ur youngest child, Breegan, is Autistic and our family is trying so hard to find the best opportunities for her. We have been blessed with professionals who are more than perfect for her at WSU’s Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic, teachers and therapists in USD 259 who are loving and experienced, nursery workers at church who are willing to love her through her fear and occasional meltdowns, doctors who are patient and thorough. We had a new experience this month that I was slightly (okay, extremely) anxious about: her first dentist appointment. My older kids have been going to the dentist every six months since they were little, but this was Breegan’s first cleaning. I was nervous about how Breegan would respond, I was nervous that she would be scared and she wasn’t able to communicate her feelings. My older two kiddos were awesome, they always have a good time at the dentist, weird as that sounds. Breegan cried, but the cleaning was accomplished and I actually left there feeling really, really good about our time at Dr. Michael Iseman’s (Wichita Pediatric Dentistry) office. Our hygienists, Tiffany and Sarah, were nothing short of perfect and Dr. Mike was calm and friendly despite a worked-up child. My kids are treated with respect, they are well taken care of and every person who works there is a ton of fun and very friendly. What more could I ask for? Yes, there are televisions that the kids can watch while in the chair, balloons and prizes, a game room, coffee machine, etc., but that isn’t what makes it a good practice. It’s the people and the pride they take in their work, which shows up in how they treat their patients. This isn’t just about bragging on our dentist, this is an example of what would make a great story for our magazine. Is there a teacher, doctor, dentist, friend, business owner, organization, activity, event, ANYTHING or ANYONE that has made an impact on you or your children? The possibilities are endless. Northwest’s anti-cyberbullying campaign goes nationwide

Mueller students earn chances to eat in lunch cockpit

ueller Engineering and Aerospace Discovery Magnet, along with Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer and representatives from the Aviation Industry Community Partners, kicked off National Aerospace Week with a special surprise for students. During two assemblies, the school unveiled their lunch cockpit, which is a large display board with a view of downtown Wichita from the cockpit of a plane.

orthwest DECA members Alex Wespi, Broc Cramer and Maddie Bazzelle have received national attention for their public relations campaign to prevent cyberbullying, including attention from John Walsh, host of America’s Most Wanted. The students’ campaign will be used this year by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, with Walsh being the spokesperson. During the 2010-11 school year, the students created the anti-cyberbullying campaign, which earned them first place in the Kansas DECA Career Development Conference in Kansas City and qualified them to present at the International DECA Competition in Orlando, Florida. They received a fifth-place medal at the international 8 | Wichita Family

competition. Wespi, Cramer and Bazzelle, along with their teacher, Jeff Darr, were invited to attend lunch on September 1 at Cox Communications to meet John Walsh during his Wichita visit. The students were asked to present their anti-cyberbullying campaign during lunch. “John was so impressed with the students that he asked them to do their public relations campaign this year on the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children,” Darr said. The students and Darr were also invited to Walsh’s studio in Washington, DC to film their television commercial and produce their radio commercial. He also offered to be the spokesperson for both.

Students who follow the school’s CHAMPS expectations are given a Boarding Pass. A Boarding Pass from each class is chosen on Fridays and the students and one of their friends can eat at a special table that has the lunch cockpit surrounding the table. CHAMPS is a proactive and positive approach to classroom management. “This is a great gift to our school,” said principal Jaime Hutchinson. “The students are really excited about it and it’s a great way to reinforce the importance of positive behavior.” Several of the school’s business partners were present in the unveiling, including Exploration Place and members from the Aviation Industry Community Partners, comprised of Spirit Aerosystems, Boeing, Cessna and Airbus.

oshua Clark, second-grade student at Pleasant Valley Elementary, received a special surprise in school for his birthday â&#x20AC;&#x201C; his father. Army Sergeant Joshua Clark, returned from serving in Afghanistan a couple of days early to surprise his son for his eighth birthday. The class was in the middle of a lesson about the U.S. Constitution, the American Flag, and citizenship. The students were told they would have a special guest when Sgt. Clark walked in the room.

Clark has been serving in Afghanistan for the past four months, which is his second deployment away from his family. He is home for a couple of weeks before going back to finish his tour of duty. Joshua said having his father home is exactly what he wanted for his birthday.

As a middle school math teacher, Stacey Ryan knows she has an important and sometimes difficult job of making sure that sixth-graders not only survive, but enjoy math. But she’s taken on the role with a force that is making a difference at Andover Middle School where she just began her 11th year and serves as the Math Department Chair, a Student Council advisor and as one of the WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) Leader Coordinator. “As WEB Leader Coordinator, I help train outstanding eighth grade leaders to serve as mentors and peer buddies to our sixth-grade students,” explained Ryan.

Another important position that Ryan holds is the Mentoring Program Coordinator, a program that matches community members with middle school students. The adults serve as mentors for the students throughout the year. “I have always loved working with kids,” said Ryan. “As a student of the Andover School District myself, I was blessed with several amazing mentors and role models who encouraged me to pursue my interest in teaching and who gave me opportunities during high school and college to work with students through volunteerism.” Ryan has always wanted to be a teacher and her passion is that her students have a positive math experience. “One rough year can really damage a student’s perspective and self-esteem in math.” she said. “I have always wanted to be a teacher who motivates my students, helps them to believe in themselves and their abilities, to show students that math is fun and that they can be successful.” Ryan is a mother of 2-year-old Lily and has been married for 10 years to Aaron. “He is a kind, funny and supportive man who helps brighten every day,” said Ryan of her husband. “Our daughter Lily is 2 years old and is our sun, moon, and stars! I have a very close family; my parents, brother, sister, and nephews have even been a part of the Mentoring Program at AMS or have helped by volunteering in some way.” Ryan looks at every day as a new beginning and an opportunity to impact a student’s life. 10 | Wichita Family

“I love to hear positive feedback from students and parents, but more importantly, I love to look at the faces I teach each day and imagine the possibilities these kids have in front of them,” said Ryan. “I tell students every year that I want them to learn math from me, and to learn that math can be fun, but above all else, I hope my students leave the year believing in themselves, choosing kindness and choosing to have a positive outlook every day.”
