A note from the mayor

Welcome to Lake Havasu

H

ello, my name is Matt Farris and welcome to my hometown, beautiful Lake Havasu City, Arizona! It is my absolute privilege to introduce you to Lake Havasu City, where the sun always shines! My hometown has so much to offer and is a tremendous choice for your destination. I am so proud to call this spectacular city, home. Growing up surrounded by majestic mountains that glow as the sun sets, boating in sparkling clear blue water watching the fish swim by and basking in warm, sunny days that fade into the most brilliant star studded sky ever, spoils you. Now that I have traveled the world as a Nashville recording artist, I realize how lucky I was to grow up in such a remarkable city. My love for Lake Havasu City runs deep and the surrounding natural beauty has influenced my music and is often featured in my videos and album photos which are filmed by local videographer/photographer Jason Kleefisch of Boom Bandits Entertainment. Some of my biggest fans live here, and I come back home frequently to play shows for them. As much as I enjoy touring and meeting my incredible fans on the road, I always look forward to spending time at home near the lake. Look my tour up and see if I am playing in Lake Havasu City while you are visiting. With the year round temperate weather and ample sunshine, anytime is a great time to visit. Lake Havasu City offers activities for all ages and interests, including but not limited to my personal favorites; fishing, swimming, waterless boat racing — yes, this is a real thing — Jeep rock crawling with my buddies from 4 • INSIDER GUIDE

Anything Off-Road, and dining out with a London Bridge view. In Lake Havasu City there is something special for everyone to love. One visit is all it takes to understand why this area is called “Arizona’s Playground.” I am happy to welcome you, our guests, and hope y’all enjoy Lake Havasu City as much as my family does. Maybe we will even be lucky enough to meet during your trip! Tune into 94.7 and 102.3 on your radio to hear my music while you are in town.

Discover river life in the Mohave Desert

L

ife is different here beside the sapphire waters of the Colorado River. Schedules are not according to time, but rather what you feel like doing in the moment. You don’t need ties, tailored suits, dresses, or heels here. The more acceptable attire, even at Lake Havasu City’s finest dining restaurants: board shorts and T-shirts, summer cover-ups thrown over bikinis, and flip flops. You can walk along the pristine white sand of our beaches, or cruise the waters to find the hidden coves nestled in towering rock formations. You can hike trails carved through our desert parks, or you can off-road along desert roads to find overnight cabins that aren’t on the map. You can stroll along Main Street, watch the sunset from one of our many river restaurants, or just sit peacefully outside with a glass of wine and wait for the star show to start. Here in Havasu, you don’t fight traffic. 8 • INSIDER GUIDE

You don’t look over your shoulder while you take an evening walk. And you don’t watch the time. Instead, you just take a deep breath, absorb the pristine desert views and nestle into a welcoming, laid-back and friendly community. Here in Lake Havasu City, if you need a hand, you’ll find one. If you don’t know what to do or where to go, just ask. There is something to do for everyone here from soaring through the skies to meandering through history. If you don’t have river or desert toys, we do, and you can play with them. And feel free to voyage south of the city to visit the quiet, but happening, river community of Parker, or take the Colorado River north to Bullhead City and Laughlin.

First time here? WARM WEATHER We’re not one to dote on the latest fashions. Just make sure it’s suitable for warm weather. Lake Havasu City, located in the lowlands of the Mohave Desert, is synonymous with “hot.” Temperatures in summer can exceed 105 degrees, and with 300 days of sunshine a year, you’ll want to make sure to bring plenty of sunscreen. In winter, temperatures dip into the mid-40s and highs are usually pleasant, reaching into the mid-60s. While you’re here in the desert, it’s a good idea to drink a lot of water to keep your fluids up and keep cool throughout the day. Thanks to the desert climate, insects aren’t a problem in Lake Havasu City. No bugs — just plenty of sunny fun on our beautiful, ocean-like beaches.

Picture perfect Lake Havasu City is a feast for the eyes

The London Bridge, looking toward The Island

MUST SEES: 1. THE LONDON BRIDGE The sparkling granite stones have been laid one-by-one across the Bridgewater Channel to help turn Lake Havasu City into the desert resort town that it is today. Whether you stroll along the bridge’s sidewalks, take a walking tour, or just sit and watch the sunset , you’ve found the subtle but iconic legend that has helped to create Lake Havasu City. 2. THE ENGLISH VILLAGE Quaint shops, eateries and ice cream parlors comprise the historic entertainment district that is known as the English Village. Although the performances that were known to the Village when it first began are long gone, the historic fountain and buildings remain. You can stroll through to peruse gift shops and clothing stores that lie just beyond the London Bridge Resort. 3. THE BRIDGEWATER CHANNEL The famed Bridgewater Channel packs in the boat parties weekend after weekend during the summer months. The craziest parties are held as the city kicks off summer on Memorial Day weekend, its tribute to America on Fourth of July and its goodbye to the summer sun during the Labor Day weekend. Whether you have a boat or not, you’ll discover an experience on another level that can only be found in the Channel in Lake Havasu City. PHOTO TIPS:

• Early morning and dusk hours are best for photos. • Although it may be uncomfortable, the sun should be to the photographer’s back

to allow it to fall on subjects’ faces. • Have your phone available at sunset to capture a stunning image of the sun. It sets the Havasu sky on fire as it drops behind the desert mountains. INSIDER GUIDE • 9

Cruising our coast 88 miles of uninterrupted river is yours to explore

A

Colorado River experience awaits you. You are standing next to one of the longest uninterrupted boating stretches of the 1,400-mile long Colorado River. The southern border of the river stretch is Parker Dam. Boaters can launch from Cattail Cove State Park; signs off of State Route 95 just outside of Lake Havasu City direct you to the most southern launch ramp on this side of the dam. From Cattail, you can navigate south on the river until you reach the dam, turn around, and then start to head back while making sure to stop at the famous party spot of Copper Canyon, located on the California side of the river, before hitting the open waters of the lake. Once past the Island, boaters can continue up to the beautiful cliffs of Topock Gorge and eventually cruise under a steel bridge to find Topock66 Spa and Resort and Pirate’s Cove Resort and Marina, both with bars and restaurants located on the river banks. You can then keep on going up to Bullhead City, which sits on the Arizona side of the river, and Laughlin, which sits on the Nevada side of the river. Most casinos have boat docks for guests to hang out for the night to see if they can catch a glimpse of Lady Luck before grabbing some breakfast and cruising back. 16 • INSIDER GUIDE

Pristine beaches

M

iles of soft, sandy beaches are easily accessible for visitors who would rather enjoy the natural scenery of Lake Havasu and the Colorado River from the shores. Whether alone or in a large group, these beaches are ideal for packing a cooler, grabbing a towel, and just sitting back to watch the boats of Havasu cruise by. Typically, the beaches are near restrooms and to some shade, while some have access to sand volleyball courts and larger pavilions with barbecues. But they all have one common element: breathtaking views of the desert mountains that encapsulate the Colorado River running through Lake Havasu. Cattail Cove Cattail Cove State Park is located about 15 miles south of Lake Havasu City off of State Route 95; signs will direct visitors to the park entrance. It is the most southern park prior to reaching the Bill Williams Bridge. Beaches, restroom access, launch ramps, and camping are all found within this 2,000-acre park. That Beach and Body Beach Located on the northern side of the Island, That Beach and Body Beach are accessible by a vehicle that can withstand the short distance over desert landscape to the edge of the Island that lies just beyond Crazy Horse Campgrounds. Typically, there are tire tracks and/or vehicles parked along the edge to highlight where to walk down a hill to access a more rocky, but also a typically more private, beach area. Crystal Beach Head north on London Bridge Road to access a quiet beach that sits on public land. Turn left of Fathom Road, which lies almost directly behind The Shops at Lake Havasu complex. Head through the stop sign where Fathom Drive will dead end into Riverside Drive, turn left and you’ll find unmarked roadside parking, and access through a gate, followed by a short hike down a hill that takes you to the waters’ edge.

Copper Canyon

Copper Canyon is one of Lake Havasu’s most picturesque and popular boating stops. During holiday periods, the canyon is full of boats; one favorite “sport” is to walk across the river without touching water – crossing from one boat deck to another. Another pastime for boaters is to watch daring amateur cliff divers jump off the canyon walls at heights ranging from 15 to 35 feet. INSIDER GUIDE • 17

Sunny days & warm beaches

Popular spots Rotary Beach Enjoy a barbecue or a game of beach volleyball at the 40-acre Rotary Park, Lake Havasu City’s largest waterfront beach and park. It’s an easy walk along the Bridgewater Channel to the London Bridge. It’s also a great spot to launch kayaks, canoes and paddleboards. Lake Havasu State Park Right on the shores of Lake Havasu, the white sand beach offers panoramic views of the lake and mountains beyond. London Bridge Beach Located along the famous Bridgewater Channel on the Island, this pet-friendly beach features a community stage, basketball, and sand volleyball courts.

Top boat-in beaches The Sandbar Without question, “the Sandbar” is the most populated gathering place for boaters on the river. It is located about one mile north of Blankenship Bend. Its wide expanse of shallow water and soft sand bottom lure hundreds of boats to the “bar” on most spring and summer weekend afternoons. Steamboat Cove Located on the southern end of Lake Havasu on the Arizona side, Steamboat Cove is known as one of the lake’s largest natural coves and a favorite location of boaters looking for a safe, secure, and comfortable environment to enjoy a day or overnight stay. Boating 101 River rules >> No speed limit, unless passing through clearly marked no-wake zones, but speed must be controlled to not cause a wake that could cause damage or collision to other watercrafts >> No size limit on watercraft >> Life jackets are needed for all boaters >> Courtesy lake traffic generally stays to the right, whether traveling north or south >> Boat operators who are under the influence can receive an operating-under-the-influence citation. >> No bow riding while underway >> Driver’s view cannot be impeded >> Motorized craft must yield to non-motorized craft >> Two occupants in the boat are needed while towing others

Need river toys? Don’t worry if you’ve arrived without river toys, because Lake Havasu City has got them for you. You can rent ski boats, deck boats, wakeboard boats, jet boats, pontoon boats, house boats, personal watercraft, inner tubes, wake boards, water skis and knee boards. Most of the rental companies will even provide you with coolers, too. The rental locations can provide a quick education in boating basics, and also will launch and retrieve your watercraft for you. Transportation options, required deposits, rates, cancellation policies, and availability will vary. For a complete list of boat rental options in Lake Havasu City, scan the QR code at right, or visit the boating section at GoLakeHavasu.com.

Get a designated captain Hopping on a boat — whether your own or rented — is one of the best ways to enjoy Lake Havasu. For the ultimate in relaxation and peace of mind, forgo the lines at the launch ramp and the responsibility of navigating the craft around unfamiliar obstacles. The Lake Havasu Marine

Association has launched a Designated Captain program, featuring Coast Guard-certified captains who will launch your boat and pilot it for the day. The LHMA’s mission is to instill awareness among recreational boaters that assigning the responsibility of a sober “Designated Operator” will sig-

nificantly reduce the number of under-the-influence-related boating accidents and fatalities on the water. Hiring a designated captain is far cheaper than being cited for an OUI. For information, visit the Lake Havasu Marine Association website: LHMarineAssn.com/ designated-operator.

Quick tip: From the Island, it’s about 20 miles south to Parker Dam. Heading north? You can make it to Needles, Calif., but note channel markers heading north from the lake. That’s more than 60 miles of cruising available. Either direction offers hidden coves and a chance to see wildlife on shore. Nine launch ramps provide convenient access to the lake, and six fueling docks ensure you can explore all Lake Havasu has to offer without running out of gas. 20 • INSIDER GUIDE

Don’t move a mussel! State law requires boaters to follow a few simple rules to help mitigate the potential for harm caused by an aquatic invasive species of mussels, known as quagga and zebra mussels. Although not harmful to humans, the rapid reproduction of mussels on hard surfaces poses as a threat to boat motors, and water intake structures for power and water plants. Following these rules will help boaters to help us maintain healthy waters. Upon exit, remove clinging debris, plants, mud, and insects from anchor, boat, motor, and trailer. Remove the plug and drain water

from the bilge and any other compartment that may contain water. Allow watercraft, and other transportation components, to completely dry before re-launching in another area, and if possible, to wait five days prior to re-launch. If you must re-launch in other waters in five days or fewer, further protocol is outlined at azgfd.com. INSIDER GUIDE • 21

Guiding lights When one thinks of lighthouses, they rarely consider a landlocked state covered in desert like Arizona, but it just so happens that Lake Havasu City is home to more lighthouses than any other city in the entire country. These 1/3-scale replicas are actual functioning navigational aids built to the specifications of famous East Coast, West Coast and Great Lakes lighthouses. More than 18 can be seen on the shores of the lake; and most can be hiked to while some are only accessible by boat. One way to see over a dozen of these beautiful lighthouses in one sitting is with the Sunset Charter & Tour Co. which takes passengers aboard the Canyon Cruiser Kon Tiki on a two-hour narrated tour every Wednesday between the months of October and May.

How to find them:

Powered by strength Explore the calming lagoons of the Colorado River by gliding along segments of its 450 miles of shoreline that allows you to discover river wildlife while getting in a work out. Stand-up paddleboards and canoe and kayak rentals are available for enthusiasts of all skill levels. Although riders do not have to be in peak performance to enjoy the sports, they will find themselves utilizing both upper and lower body strength. Peaceful mornings or dusk trips can take you along the shores of the Bill Williams River National Wildlife Refuge that lies to the south of Lake Havasu City or to the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge that lies to the north. The rental listings at GoLakeHavasu. com detail which locations provide paddle sport rentals. 22 • INSIDER GUIDE

Find your fish story Chances are you can catch the next big one

The waters of the Colorado River and Lake Havasu are home to superb small and largemouth bass fishing, in addition to the world record for the redear sunfish. The lake is also home to striped bass and several species of catfish to keep both amateur and professional anglers busy. BassTackleMaster located at 362 London Bridge Road is a perfect one-stop shop for information on how and where to fish the river and Lake Havasu, in addition to picking up a fishing license. Non-resident fishing licenses are $20 per day, or $55 for one year. Fishing licenses for Arizona residents are $15 per day or $37 per year. Licenses can also be purchased online through AZGFD.gov and printed. According to Russ Engel, the Arizona Game and Fish Department fish program supervisor for the Lake Havasu region, a collaborative partnership between local, state, and federal agencies places 800 bundles of brush in the lake annually to maintain and improve fish habitat. Engel says Bassmasters has rated Lake Havasu as one of the top 20 lakes in the nation for bass fishing, and held its Elite Tournament on Lake Havasu in 2015. Bag weights for five fish more than 20 pounds are commonly needed to win bass tournaments, and bag weights for five fish in Havasu have come in at 30 pounds for the last two years.

Did you know? The world record 5.8-pound redear sunfish was caught in Havasu in 2014, along with several redear weighing at least five pounds, according to Engel. In addition, a 36-pound striped bass was caught during the 2016 Striper Derby. 26 • INSIDER GUIDE

Lake Havasu City is home to fishing celebrity Dean Rojas, who often makes headlines as he competes in the Bassmaster Elite Series. Dean has some tips for anglers visiting Lake Havasu: “It’s a great lake, and the fish are not hard to catch, you just need the right gear for the right day — ask John Galbraith at

BassTackleMaster in town, and he’ll have information on what’s up with the lake that day. Make sure you’re prepared for the weather.” Rojas has his own lure design, a topwater frog made by Spro, which retails for just over $10. The lure has been highly successful with 500,000 sold since 2006.

Hunting opportunities abound Wild game quietly watches from perches along the rocky mountain sides or from shoreline patches of vegetation. Although this swath of the Colorado River region may not appear to be ideal hunting grounds, the surrounding desert terrain draws hunters annually for both small and large game. Regional game includes dove, quail, waterfowl, cottontail deer, javelin, bighorn sheep, elk, mountain lions, and coyotes. For this hunting season, the quail season will end Feb. 12, 2017 and waterfowl hunting ends Jan. 29, 2017. Hunters can apply in the spring for a limited number of tags for the general deer season. An Arizona hunting license is required for anyone who is at least 10 years old. A nonresident hunting/fishing license is $160 for one year or $20 for one day. Big shots Ready, aim, hit your mark

L

ake Havasu City, set squarely in the wild, wild West, is a gun lover’s paradise. Locally owned gun shops line Havasu’s main street along McCulloch Boulevard, and we’re home to RTT Firearms, which locally manufactures sniper rifles, AR-15s and custom-built rifles that include paint jobs. If you’ve brought your own firearm, or decide to purchase one or rent one here, there are indoor and outdoor locations to practice your shot while you’re here. Sam’s Shooters Emporium on Main Street at 2183 McCulloch Blvd. boasts the “longest indoor range in Arizona,” with 13 lanes ranging from five to 25 meters. Shooters can also take to the Lake Havasu City Sportsman Club at SARA Park, which features five pistol bays and two rifle bays. Shooters are often found taking their own targets out to the desert for wild, true wild West shooting, which is legal, however, remember that offroad vehicles and hikers are often 28 • INSIDER GUIDE

found in remote desert areas so be mindful of how targets are placed. Also remember to pick up remnants of targets upon finishing. In Arizona, buyers must be at least 21 years old to purchase or rent a handgun or machine gun, with the exception of being 18 years old to purchase a long gun.

Play the strings ARCHERY, ANYONE? If you’re a fan of the bow, arrow or crossbow, SARA Park is home to an extensive range with nearly 20 targets. The range, located adjacent to pistol and rifle ranges, is maintained by the Lake Havasu City Sportsmans’ Club. Both the archery and pistol and rifle ranges are open-year round and free to the public, but you must bring your own equipment. No bows, crossbows, or arrows are available on the premises for rent or purchase. Archers under the age of 18 must be under the direct supervision of a parent or responsible adult. Restrooms also are available on the range. While the facilities are free to the public, the Sportmans’ Club offers a yearly membership for $60. For information, visit HavasuSportsman.com.

Wide open spaces

Explore the desert landscape It may feel like you are going to the middle of nowhere, surrounded by nothing but sand, rocks, and brush. But you are going somewhere. Just follow the trails whether by foot, by mountain bike, by four-wheel, or by an off-road vehicle. Watch how the Arizona sun coaxes magnificent shades of red from our surrounding mountain ranges. Notice the glistening sediments that bind the rocks beneath your feet. You might find gold. Stand in awe as you watch the bluest waters of the Colorado River continue to carve its path through this desert. Discover the remnants of lives before us, lying still undisturbed throughout the desert landscape. Imagine the lives of the Native Americans and Spanish, hundreds of years ago, who crossed this desert, explored this desert, and eventually called this desert home. Quick tip: Whether you’re on foot, mountain bike or horseback, a good starting point is SARA Park on Havasu’s south side, home to miles of trails for outdoor lovers of all skill levels.

Trail toys Get started Several local rental companies can provide off-road desert toys to you, as well as trail maps, and safety education about desert tripping. Typically, the rentals include a GPS system for easy tracking if you accidentally or purposely wander from the trail. Both sunrise and sunset pro-

vide epic views of the quiet desert life, while the spring months will show you how a desert blooms. For a complete list of offroad rentals, go to GoLake Havasu.com and click on “Activities” and then “OffRoad” to discover available rental companies.

Know your ride Here’s a breakdown of the different types of off-road vehicles and terms. “Off-road” is the all-encompassing term for off-highway vehicles, but that doesn’t mean all models are made equal. You wouldn’t go trekking in the desert with a golf cart.

Quad: A quad is essentially a motorcycle with four wheels as it has motorcycle-like handlebars. It can come in two and four-wheel drive and is ideal for younger riders.

Side-by-sides: These are internal, sit down off-road vehicles with round steering wheels. The side-by-side vehicles come in two- and four-seat versions. These are the most common and most modern types of vehicles you’ll see on off-road trails.

Buggy: A small off-road vehicle, usually one with an open top. Four-Wheel Drive or 4x4: These vehicles have a transmission system that provides power directly to all four wheels. All wheels are engaged to make the vehicle move.

Off-roading in the desert is a family tradition

C

onquering the desert has been a family affair for the Hobdays. When his children were young, Gene Hobday would take his family camping because the possibilities were limitless. On these trips across the country, the now retired banker would take his land cruiser with a teardrop trailer in tow and allow his children to camp out under the stars. The family activity was cheap and it gave him a 30 • INSIDER GUIDE

chance to show his children this nation’s beautiful outdoors. His son, Ross Hobday, picked up the tradition and started taking his children camping when he was a young father. “I grew up four-wheeling with dad,” Ross Hobday said. “Then I had little kids and I couldn’t take them on a motorcycle. The only way to get out there is to four-wheel as a family.” Even though his father introduced him to the riding life, it was Ross who was a founding member of the Havasu 4-Wheelers Club. Ross Hobday said he would just go out and get lost in the desert with friends on their off-road vehicles for hours and try to find their way back

home, long before GPS services were ubiquitous. They wanted to reach out to others in the area who shared their love for the rough roads and eventually the club was formed. The social group connected a diverse group of people, young and old and inadvertently extended the Hobday family. “I never thought in my wildest dreams it would grow to what it is,” Ross Hobday said. “Those people are my friends to this day.” Ultimately Ross Hobday thanks his father for the values he instilled in him through offroading and other outdoor activities. He believes they’re important life skills to pass onto his children.

Open desert roads The paths of Mohave desert exploration are not always paved. An extensive off-road trail system criss-crosses and loops around the rocky desert terrain that surrounds the Colorado River. The trails of varying intensity are ideal for Jeeps, or other all-wheel drive vehicles, ATVs, UTVs, side-bysides, dirt bikes, and mountain bikes. You can check with any off-road rental company for a map, or you can also check out www.azoffroading.com for several local off-roading maps, and trail information.

Off-road safety tips 1: Carry your tow strap, with a clevis mounted on it, so the driver can reach it without getting out of the vehicle, for example, next to or under the driver’s seat. 2: Place a knife within easy reach so you can cut through your seat belts if necessary. Velcro it to the dashboard.

3: Keep a device handy to break out a window. 4: Mount your fire extinguisher in an easily accessible location. 5: All loose items such as ice chests, cameras, chairs, and water bottles should be securely anchored, as they could become projectiles in a rollover.

6: When caravaning, the last vehicle should put on their emergency flashing lights before turning off the highway. 7: Do not pull someone while moving in reverse, as you can easily break an axle.

Real Estate Long Term Rentals Vacation Rentals Winter Rentals

Quick tip: Watch out for old mines! Abandoned mines are all over the desert, and pose a danger to hikers and off-roaders. Stay on the trails whenever possible.

Take a hike!

Many paths, many adventures Get up close and personal with the Mohave Desert by hiking numerous trails that have subtly carved their paths around the Colorado River. With varying degrees of intensity, you can either take a leisure stroll, or a moderate hike down to the river’s edge, or a challenging climb up one of the surrounding rock faces.

Typically, the early morning or later afternoon hours can be the best times to plan your hike, depending on the weather for the time of the year. Check out the Chemehuevi Wash Trail for a hike on the easy side of the spectrum, and the Crossman Peak Trail and Cupcake Mountain Trail for the more adventurous climbers.

Play it safe while exploring the desert terrain by following a few simple suggestions: 1. Always notify a third-party about where you are going, what you are wearing, and when you intend on returning. 2. Make sure to wear sturdy shoes, and take plenty of water. A fun online tool at Camelbak.com helps you determine how much water you should take for the level of activity that you’ll be doing and in the temperatures that you’ll be active in. A general rule of thumb is about 34 ounces (1/4 of a gallon) per hour of activity. 3. Ensure you don’t place your hands or feet under or inside rock

formations as rattlesnakes can hide in those locations. Make sure not to provoke a rattler, or to try to handle it even if it is dead, as reflex bites can still occur. If bitten, don’t use constricting bands or suction, don’t give alcohol or medication, don’t try to catch the snake, do relax and move as little as possible, do remove tight clothing from the affected limb, do go to the closest medical facility (do not wait for symptoms to appear). 4. Beware of marked and unmarked mine shafts that still exist throughout the desert. You can also find a complete list of what to include in recommended desert activity packs at www.mohavesearch.com.

The great outdoors

Whether you pull in or pitch a tent, Havasu has a spot for you Secluded patches of desert are waiting for you to pull in and stay for a night or two. This region is known for its abundance of motorhome and tent camping spots throughout the state parks that line the Colorado River or with one of the private campgrounds. In addition to accommodating tents and RVs, boaters also have a range of boat-in camping options along the river to give you a private desert beach experience during your stay. You can bring any boat to sleep in or bring a tent for the shore. Quick tip: Each year, the desert that lines State Route 95 in Quartzsite turns into a major RV campground for visitors who are looking for a small town to call home for the winter. The designated BLM camping areas fill up as travelers search for a quiet place to nestle. Quartzsite has several small grocery stores and restaurants, but no major shopping areas. For more information on BLM camping in Quartzsite, go to BLM.gov and search for La Posa Long Term Visitor Area.

ozens – if not hundreds – of small coves and inlets dot the coast of Lake Havasu as it snakes its way north from the Parker Dam, providing a quiet respite for boaters looking to drop anchor and enjoy a day on the water. During the calm months and weeks on the lake, boaters can explore the many coves on the Arizona shore, stopping at one of more than 70 Bureau of Land Management boat-in campgrounds. Or head over to the California side and have a picnic on one of the 20-plus Chemehuevi Indian Tribe beaches. But for the busy weeks, you’ll

have to be more creative. While the warming spring weather may bring to town a flock of rowdy spring breakers from around the country, it is also the unofficial return of boating season. But, thankfully, most of the spring break crowd doesn’t come to Havasu towing their own boats. While some rent a boat and head out on the lake, they aren’t familiar with all the hidden gems and backwaters the lake has to offer. Simply heading south toward the dam, past the channel and the most popular areas — Copper Canyon — should put you somewhere it feels like a regular weekend on the lake. INSIDER GUIDE • 33

The road starts here The Standard Wash trail can take you anywhere The force of summer monsoons has slowly engraved one of the region’s most picturesque washes as it directs rushing rain water to the lake. But with limited annual rainfall in the Lake Havasu region, Standard Wash has evolved to become a popular hiking and off-road trail that leads desert enthusiasts on a 9.6-mile journey through a dry waterfall, rock formations, and open desert terrain to the shores of Lake Havasu. If by foot, visitors should plan to spend about four to five hours of desert exploration along the wash that snakes through 7,500 acres of expansive desert. To ensure hiking safety, stay along existing routes, and download GPS coordinates and a detailed hiking map at GoLakeHavasu.com by clicking on “Activities,” and then “Hiking.”

Quick tip: If you’re going to spend more than 20 minutes within 200 feet of the Standard Wash campsite, the user fee is $10 a day for up to six people, with a $2 fee for each additional person. If you intend to camp, an additional overnight fee of $10 is good until 9 a.m. the following day. Fee ballards, known as “iron rangers,” are located onsite beside the picnic table. Funds should be deposited in the permit envelope and dropped inside the ballard.

Key information DIRECTIONS TO TRAILHEAD Option 1: Drive south on State Route 95 to the vicinity of mile post 173, about 4 miles out of town. Off to the right is an electrical substation. Park at the entrance road near the gate. Option 2: Drive another half-mile along State Route 95 and park off road on the east side of the highway at the BLM Standard Wash parking area. This site saves hiking time and distance. TRAIL ROUTE INSTRUCTIONS: Option 1: If you park in the vicinity of mile post 173, walk behind the gate down the dirt road to the electrical substation. From behind the substation, walk south in the wash (parallel to the highway) and continue downstream. Option 2: From the alternate site at the BLM parking area, walk through the underpass (south side of parking area) to avoid crossing State Route 95. Follow the wash downstream until it meets the wash listed in Option 1. Be sure as you proceed on this shortcut to mark every time you enter a new wash so you can find it on the

way back. If you don’t, you may get back to the highway some distance from your car. MAIN TRAIL DETAILS Following either option, the wash eventually turns right, entering a canyon that leads to the lake. A large 12-foot dry waterfall can be slid down on the left side, and can be climbed back up in the middle or on the right. Before you descend, however, be sure you can get back up on the return trip. There is a not well-defined bypass trail up and around this area on the north side; retreat about 100 yards and look for it, if needed. When near the lake, go up the left bank at its lowest point on a burro trail (behind a bushy tree) and follow it along the rim and down to the lake and campsite.

Take yourself on a desert adult scavenger hunt for one of the locally famed cabins that welcome visitors for day-long or overnight stays. Make sure you bring a trail map, plenty of water, extra gasoline, and the recommended pack essentials, and settle in for long rides. One cabin is reportedly off of a a a major wash on the way to the Bill Williams River. The cabin amenities are welcome to be used by visitors, but it’s asked to please clean up after yourself by hauling out any trash, and leave extra food and water, if you have some. Swing by any of the off-road vehicle rental companies to talk to experienced off-roaders about what to take and where to go to find the hidden cabins surrounding Havasu.

on and Donnie Nelson sat in their lawn chairs at Craggy Wash with sandwiches in hand, simply enjoying life and the desert sun. “We’re just wandering around,” the younger Donnie said. He and his father call Boise, Idaho their true home. They have been boondocking, or “roughing it” with their trailer, on and off for more than 25 years around Lake Havasu City. Perhaps one reason they were in a good mood is because campers with RVs or trailers can set up camp at no charge for up to 14 days at Craggy Wash, which is located just north of the airport off the highway. The catch is that there are no hookups — water, electric or otherwise. But that is just fine for these self-reliant campers. Donnie enjoys the camaraderie among his fellow travelers. “We’ll sit around and drink a couple of beers,” he said.

Stroll through history

O Fun facts: • The lamps on the bridge are made from the melteddown cannons of Napoleon Bonaparte’s army. • The London Bridge is home to hundreds of bats, which inhabit the nooks and crannies of its hollow interior. • There are thousands of swallows who have built their mud nests on the underside of the bridge.

ne by one, the granite blocks were numbered as the deconstruction began of the London Bridge, which spanned the River Thames in London, England. Robert P. McCulloch had purchased the sinking bridge in an auction for $2.4 million, and then spent $7 million to deconstruct, ship, and reconstruct the bridge in the exact manner as its original construction in 1825. Reconstruction in Lake Havasu City began in 1968 and today, the London Bridge spans the Colorado River and sits adjacent to the historic English

Nevertheless, the concept won the affections of visitors and residents alike. That flavor of Old England remains in the English Village today, where you’ll find the Lake Havasu City Visitors Center as well as an abundance of shops catering to visitors.

Today, thousands of tourists still pass through the iron gates to peruse through the Visitors Center, shops, and restaurants in the English Village. Visitor Center staff provides a brief and inexpensive walking tour of the London Bridge to reveal the stories behind fascinating historical marks in the granite blocks that can still be seen today.

Try this brew: This classic black tea is made from Assam, Ceylon, and Kenyan teas, according to Livestrong.com. This tea is commonly served with milk or with lemon and sugar. The English tea is known to be high in antioxidants and studies have found that milk with a lower-fat content reduce the health benefits, while lemon and higher-fat content milk enrich the potential benefits of the antioxidants. The antioxidant benefits have been shown to reduce cholesterol, risk of heart disease, and increase mental stimulation and hydration. In Havasu, head to The Brew Shack at 2018 N. McCulloch Blvd., or find them at thebrewshack-az.com to experience exotic teas and coffees.

An English tradition WEEKLY HIGH TEA You don’t have to go to England to enjoy a traditional English high tea. The London Bridge Resort hosts a “Queen’s Tea” every Wednesday at 3 p.m. Hot tea and scones are served with a presentation of the history of tea and the London Bridge. The London Bridge Resort is at 1477 Queens Bay. The cost of the event is $10 per person. For information, call 928-855-0888.

MUSEUM EVENT An annual “Queen’s Tea” each February is a signature fundraiser for the Lake Havasu Museum of History. The party is at the London Bridge Resort’s King Arthur Room. Guests are treated to a Victorian-era fashion show while being served traditional English tea with scones, tea sandwiches and strawberries and cream. The cost: $25 per person. Escapes Step back in time

The wondrous Hualapais

Stagecoach Trails Guest Ranch in Yucca, northeast of Lake Havasu City, allows guests to revisit what it was like to live in the Old West. The 400-acre ranch is tucked away in the Sacramento Valley, in the shadows of the Black Mountains. Surrounding scrublands cry out for exploration. The ranch invites guests to slow down and take things at their own pace, but there’s no scarcity of activities. A short list: Tours of the nearby mountains, visits to gold mines, ATV tours and wagon rides. The ranch is home to 40 horses, presided over by Hoss, a 16-hand gentle giant who’s part Belgian, part quarter-horse. Stagecoach Trails can be found at 199985 S. Doc Holliday Road in Yucca. For information call 866-444-4471.

Looking to get out of the heat and feel a cool reminder of the north on your nose and cheeks? Lace up your hiking boots and pack up your tent for a trip to the Hualapai Mountains near Kingman. The Mohave County Park covers more than 2,300 acres and sports elevations ranging from less than 5,000 feet to more than 8,400 feet. As the road to the park stretches away from Kingman, it enters beautiful pine forests. Fresh air and cooler temperatures welcome visitors. The park is great for a day visit or overnight camping. Dozens of campsites offer a variety of options — traditional tent camping, teepees with cots or fully furnished mountain cabins. Elk, mule deer, foxes, raccoons and other wildlife are readily spotted wandering around the campground. The campsites sit at the base of a maze

of trails that wind their way through the forest to a handful of mountain peaks. The trail difficulties range from a walk down the street to a mad scramble up steep and rocky paths. Pack a snack or lunch and stop off at one of the many overlooks. See if you can spot where the forest melts away into desert.

An ancient, amazing maze

In 1978, the Topock Maze was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and falls under the protection of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. 46 • INSIDER GUIDE

Within walking distance (or even a stone’s throw) from Interstate 40 near Needles, you’ll find a remnant of American Indian heritage and spiritual importance. The Topock Maze is a 600-plus-year-old geoglyph consisting of intricate patterns and paths designed by the Fort Mojave Indian

Tribe. The modern Mohave people believe the maze is a part of the spiritual portal to the next life where bad souls get lost, and good souls find their portal to the afterlife. Early experts believed the warriors returning from battle would run through the maze, leaving any bad spirits behind. To get there,

go to Interstate 40 west of Lake Havasu City, exit Park Moabi Road and go south (away from Pirate Cove Resort). Follow the pavement until it ends and turn left onto a graded road. Continue about one mile. The maze will be on the north (left) side of the road in a fenced-in area.

Desert Bar There are plenty of bars in Lake Havasu City to fill a long weekend. Breweries and bistro pubs, big dance floors and rows of regulars, cash-only and $100 tabs. But for something different, head out into the middle of the desert. The Desert Bar is, perhaps, Arizona’s most interesting watering hole. When you walk across a covered bridge into Desert Bar, the smell of smoke and and burgers and the sounds of live music welcome you to a place that could easily be made home for a cool fall afternoon. Patios and gazebos stagger at differed heights and there’s a seat for everyone. People kick back with friends and families with cans of Bud, Bud Light, Coors and Coors Light, and small plastic cups with mixed drinks. Make sure to bring cash, because credit card technology hasn’t made its way to this part of the desert. There are no TVs with sports games or loud, bass-heavy music and dance floors. The Desert Bar closes at 6 p.m. and is only open from the first weekend of October to the last weekend of March. It is open from noon to 6 p.m. with live music from 1 to 5 p.m. For directions and additional information, visit www.thedesertbar.com.

Burro town

‘Mother Road’ Route 66, often called “America’s Main Street,” snakes its way through Mohave County, just a few miles north of Lake Havasu City. There are attractions all along the old highway, but you’ll want to go to Kingman, about 70 miles from Havasu, to truly experience it. While there, you can eat at Mr D’s Route 66 Diner, or visit the Powerhouse Route 66 Museum. Each fall, Kingman celebrates the “Mother Road” with the “Best of the West on 66 Fest.” GoKingman.com 48 • INSIDER GUIDE

What was once a one of the largest producers of gold in Arizona is now a popular tourist attraction smack dab in the middle of the desert that spans between Lake Havasu City, Kingman, and Bullhead City. Nestled in the mountains along Historic Route 66, this town is famous for its burros, gun fights, and the Olive Oatman Restaurant and Ice Cream Saloon. Annual events here include Bed Races in January, Sidewalk Egg Fry contest in July, and the International Burro Bisket Toss during Labor Day weekend. The town was booming in the early 1900s, but had its mines closed during World War II. When the mine re-opened, by 1995 it was producing 40,000 ounces of gold annually, but the mine closed again in 1998 due to low gold prices, according to the Oatman Chamber of Commerce website. Now, the area boasts about 40 gift, antique, and craft stores, bars, restaurants, and live music. OatmanGoldRoad.com.

Swansea Historic Townsite

Ghost towns

P

ieces of the history that helped to shape the modern Western U.S. can still be found throughout the surrounding deserts in the remaining skeletons of ghost towns (See Oatman and Desert Bar on Page 48). Although abandoned mining camps are most popular surrounding Lake Havasu, a venture to the south can reveal a few stories behind the standing history of the Western frontier. One of the most intact ghost towns is the Swansea Historic Townsite, which was first populated by miners around 1862. By 1909, the region had a population of 500. It operated almost continuously until the 50 • INSIDER GUIDE

mines were closed in 1937. Although weather and vandalism has affected the historic site, there are still adobe and brick buildings and foundations. The numerous tunnels and open mine shafts are dangerous and should be avoided. Be prepared for desert travel by taking plenty of water and snacks, and remain with your vehicle if it breaks down. From Parker, head south to cross the railroad tracks, turn left (or east) on Shea Road for 13 miles along a paved road until you reach a county sign pointing to Swansea down a dirt road. Continue straight at the four-way stop until you reach Swansea.

estled in the desert between Phoenix and Los Angeles, visitors enjoy a special treat each night after a beautiful sunset: a night sky full of stars. With nearly 290 sunny days and clear nights, the Lake Havasu City area is a great place to trace the Big Dipper and wonder about faraway space. City founder Robert McCulloch originally designed the city with no streetlights in any of the residential areas, purposefully leaving our night skies lit up with billions of

stars visible. If you are lucky enough to be in our city during a meteor shower, you’ll have the opportunity to see dozens of shooting stars throughout the evening — something you probably won’t see if you are under the lights of a big city. Better still, pull off at the end of a road or trek a few hundred yards into the desert and enjoy the view. Watch for shooting stars, and be sure to make a wish. SARA Park is a recreation paradise

S

ARA Park is Lake Havasu City’s backyard desert playground. The 1,100-acre park boasts miles of trails that wind their way through the park’s scenic mountains, canyons, and washes, including the popular Crack in the Mountain slot canyon. The trails can be explored on foot or on a mountain bike. Whichever way you explore SARA Park, be sure to bring plenty of water. The park is also a great place to quench your need for speed with a pair of racing venues calling it home. The Havasu 95 Speedway features a dozen car races every season on its quarter-mile oval track. The motocross park is filled with jumps, berms and natural terrain. Get more information at havasu95speedway.com. SARA Park BMX races two nights a week. It’s an adrenaline-lover’s paradise. You can find more information about the track at usabmx.com/tracks/1292. Tinnell Memorial Sports Park

This park was built at the Colorado River edge in Rotary Park to honor Patrick Tinnell, who lost his life serving in the U.S. Army, and Colin Sasseen, who died after being hit by a car while practicing skateboarding tricks in at the end of his driveway in Havasu. The nearly 40,000-square-foot park for skateboarders, BMX bikers and scooter enthusiasts

overlooks the lake and is near ample parking. It has tables for spectators. The park design features a huge bowl, stairs, ramps, and rails, and a replica U.S. Army helmet. The facility is said to be one of the largest skateparks in Arizona. The park is in Rotary Park at 1400 Smoketree Ave., and is open from sunrise to 11 p.m. daily.

Beginner and advanced disc golf players are invited to try their disc releases at Havasu’s own nine-hole disc golf course on the island. By combining golf and Frisbee, this sport can be a great way to inexpensively pass some time at Havasu’s free disc golf course. Each hole has three different tee placements for variance in length and difficulty. Although you can use a Frisbee to play, specialty discs are created to allow you to

choose discs that fly further down fairways or discs that can be used for closer-distance putting. Starter specialty discs can be purchased fairly inexpensively at the Big 5 Sporting Goods at 251 Lake Havasu Ave. To find the course, head across the London Bridge to the Island, stay to the left and follow Beachcomber Boulevard. Turn right on Malibu Way, just past the Nautical Beachfront Resort.

Did you know? Tinnell Memorial Skate Park was recently featured as a playable course in the smartphone game “True Skate,” available for purchase on iPhones and Droids. Your cup of tee Picture perfect courses Green fairways, clear sky, desert, mountains, and a shimmering lake offer a captivating mixture that keeps area golf courses busy during the fall, winter and spring with great deals that rule in summer. Golf along the water’s edge, try a 36-hole layout or check out the lake views from an upscale clubhouse. Lake Havasu City’s five golf courses are designed to challenge golfers of all skill levels. Quick tip: Noted for its unusual layout, Emerald Canyon Golf Course has a hole on the back 9 that allows you to drive off of a cliff, over bushes, to a green that is barely visable.

Emerald Canyon Nuzzled against mountain backdrops with narrow fairways and dramatic elevation changes, the Emerald Canyon Golf Course has been hailed as “Arizona’s Most Exotic Golf Course” by the Arizona Republic. Bill Huffman, who completed the review said at the time, “Guaranteed, there is no other course in Arizona like Emerald Canyon. It is one of the most raw, rugged, ravishingly beautiful layouts I’ve ever played.”

Shop & Eat Redefining ‘casual’

Havasu’s shopping and dining districts

It’s easy to hit the four main hot spots for local shopping and dining in Lake Havasu City. The laid-back casual lifestyle of the Colorado River is apparent as retail stores sport primarily beachwear, which is also commonly seen – and accepted – at all of Havasu’s restaurants. Although the city is accustomed to kicking back, remember that shoes are required (flip flops are always alright), along with T-shirts for men if they are sporting their board shorts, and a swimsuit cover up for women.

THE ISLAND The Nautical Beachfront Resort at 1000 N. McCulloch Blvd. boasts some of the best lake views from its outdoor Turtle Beach Bar and Grille, with sandy floors and tiki roofs. The Resort also offers a clothing boutique, and an infinity pool overlooking the lake and comfortably placed right next to another outdoor bar. Once over the London Bridge, the Island Mall sits on the corner and features the RU Gallery, a local artist and jewelry designer, in its interior as well as the London Bridge Harley-Davidson on the lower-level exterior deck. The location is also home to one of the Havasu’s three established breweries. You’ll also find Makai Café, which serves breakfast and lunch along the Bridgewater Channel, and neighboring Shugrue’s Restaurant, one of Havasu’s finest and most established upscale restaurants. Across the road is Javelina Cantina, where the tequila flows, and The Heat, with an outside bar patio that overlooks the Channel and the Bridge to provide some of the best local day and night views the city has to offer. SWANSON AVENUE A portion of Swanson Avenue turns into a shopping and dining corridor once you cross Highway 95 on the lake-side of the city. There you will find small boutiques, Beachcomber’s Ski and Sport, a one-stop shop for men, women, and teen beachwear, and local restaurants, including Barley Bros. Restaurant & Brewery. MCCULLOCH BOULEVARD AND LAKE HAVASU AVENUE: The corner shopping plazas near the London Bridge offer combinations of national retail chains, including Ross, and local boutiques, including a flip flop, clothing, and sandal shop. The local retail stores found there, such as Action Sports, offer swimwear, beach wear, and water toys, as well as Linda’s Italian Food and Sausage, a local favorite meat market with homemade pasta selections to prepare at home. Local restaurants in this area include Mexican fare and a local pizza parlor. ‘MAIN STREET’ Main Street is a portion of McCulloch Boulevard between Smoketree Avenue and Acoma Boulevard. Here you will find several blocks filled with dining, bars, and shopping all within walking distance. Retail shopping includes clothing, culinary stores that feature a plethora of balsamic and olive oils, as well as perfect quick party solutions, and an exotic tea and coffee store, books, furniture, consignment stores, antique stores, locally made decorations and furniture, gun stores, and thrift stores. Restaurants include the popular breakfast and Bloody Mary café, the Red Onion, along with the sports bar, Bad Dog’s, and Jersey’s Grill.

College Street Brewhouse College Street may be a little off the beaten path, but its award-winning brews and atmosphere hit the mark. Just north of the city-side Kiowa Boulevard off of Highway 95, College Street offers 10 year-round house brews, in addition to their seasonal rotations. Craft brew drinkers can find the popular Big Blue Van, a blueberry and vanilla American-style wheat beer on tap, along with the award-wining Brother’s Dewey, an Old Ale aged for at least one year in a cellar and winner of a bronze medal at the Great American Beer Festival. Here you can find southern classic tastes of Cajun cream shrimp and jambalaya, an organic garden burger, and pizza. 1940 College Dr. 928-854-2739 www.collegestreetbrewhouseandpub.com

Mudshark Brewery A Havasu family started “Arizona’s West Coast Brewery,” named after a historic throwback to the neighboring local Mudshark Beach, now known as Rotary Park. Still family-owned, the Stocking family has pushed for “green” brewing and now run the brewery mainly from solar energy. With six yearround house taps, the restaurant continuously rotates small craft brew batches along with its seasonal brews. Popular brews such as the Scorpion Amber Ale and Full Moon Belgian Wit are delivered to your table by certified craft brew servers. The American menu features local favorites such as the Antipasta Salad, Scorpion Burger, and the Blackened Chicken Penne. 210 Swanson Ave. 928-453-2981 www.mudsharkbeer.com

Getting around Pedal power Cyclists love Lake Havasu City for its mix of rugged terrain and wide open spaces. Late fall and early winter are the best times to break out the bikes, when the weather has cooled down enough to make a ride a refreshing and relaxing experience. ISLAND TRAIL This paved 3.6-mile loop runs around the interior of the Island. It is also used by pedestrians. The trail, ideal for those looking for a relaxing ride, can take anywhere from 15 to 40 minutes depending on your speed. A round trip on this trail can take anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours depending on your speed. SARA PARK SARA Park, home to a BMX track and numerous mountain bike trails, is at mile post 175 on Highway 95, about one mile south of Lake Havasu City.
