Enjoy our beaches
Lake Havasu — also known as Arizona’s West Coast —serves up a supreme beach experience: Beautiful sandy lake beaches, and clean, clear, fresh water that’s comfortable for swimming most of the year. With few or no waves, it’s perfect for cooling off in the summer when temperatures soar, and it
remains warm and relaxing well into fall. These lovely lake beaches are the perfect hangout spots for families — you can truly relax in the warm sand without worrying about dangerous fish or riptide currents. If you go on a boat, pristine private beaches are plentiful and perfect for sunbathing in solitude. Nearly every part of the lake
It’s hot! Get out on the lake and cool off Lake Havasu’s water provide the perfect place to cool off in summer. Not everyone may be as skilled as you with a boat and trailer. The following is a list of launch ramps along the lake:

Parker Tube Float has a new, shorter route Big changes are in store for the Parker Tube Float in 2017. Parker Regional Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Director Mary Hamilton said the float, which is set for June 10, will follow a much shorter route in a less-populated area along the Colorado River north of Parker. The float will start at Buckskin Mountain State Park, and end at the events area in La Paz County
Park south of Pirates’ Den. The new route will be three miles long as compared with the old one being eight miles long. The old route started at La Paz County Park and ended at the beach at the BlueWater Resort & Casino. Hamilton described the cooperation of Arizona State Parks and La Paz County Park as “awesome.”

PARKER TUBE FLOAT DRAWS THOUSANDS EACH YEAR The Tube Float is a major fundraiser for the Parker chamber. In recent years, it has drawn 8,000 floaters, and is one of the busiest weekends in the summer for the Parker area. It gives a major summertime boost to local businesses, and contributes to the Town of Parker’s sales tax and hotel/motel bed tax. Of last year’s participants, however, only 6,000 actually registered and paid the entrance fee. For 2017, the entry fee is being increased from $10 to $20. This came after riverside residents complained of trash in the river, confrontations with unruly and intoxicated floaters, trespassing on their properties and other issues. Many of these complaints were aired at a La Paz County Board of Supervisors work session Nov. 21. Possible solutions voiced at the Nov. 21 work session included having a shorter route, and starting the float at Buckskin Mountain State Park and ending it at La Paz County Park. At the time, Hamilton said the complaints were not falling on deaf ears, and that she took the trash and trespassing issues seriously. Hamilton told a Parker radio station there is a tremendous need to volunteers for this event, and she asked that anyone interested in volunteering should contact her office. The Parker Regional Chamber of Commerce and Tourism is located at 1217 California Avenue in Parker. The phone number is 928-669-2174.

KNOW THE SIGNS
Carbon monoxide poisoning mimics seasickness
G
as-powered boat engines produce carbon monoxide, or CO, a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas that can prove fatal to humans. People exposed to high concentrations of CO over a short period of time can die from that exposure, as can people exposed to lower concentrations of CO over a longer period of time. No one gets on a boat expecting to be poisoned by CO. But CO can build up on a boat rather quickly, and because it has no color, odor or taste, boaters and their passengers may be inhaling CO without knowing it. To protect themselves from CO poisoning, those who plan to go boating should learn to recognize the symptoms of CO exposure and react to their presence as quickly as possible. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the most common symptoms of CO exposure and poisoning include: • headache • dizziness • weakness • nausea • vomiting • chest pain • confusion Many of the symptoms of CO poisoning are also indicative of seasickness, so
boaters and their passengers exhibiting any of the aforementioned symptoms should consider that they might be suffering from seasickness, which is not nearly as risky to a person’s overall health as CO poisoning. GET EDUCATED In addition to learning about CO, boat owners should take steps to prevent CO poisoning on their boats. At the onset of each boating season and before each trip, inspect your boat’s CO detector to make sure it is working properly.
When it is, the detector will alert boat owners and their passengers to elevated levels of CO in the cabin. Boat owners should keep a brand new backup detector on their boat so they won’t have to cancel a trip should they arrive at their boat only to find out their existing detector is not functioning properly. In addition to installing and maintaining your CO detector, the CDC recommends the following preventive measures to reduce you and your passengers’ risk of CO poisoning. • Swim and play away
from areas where engines vent their exhaust. • Keep a watchful eye on children when they play on rear swim decks or water platforms. • Do not block exhaust outlets. When such outlets are blocked, CO can build up in the cabin and the cockpit. • Do not dock or anchor within 20 feet of another boat that is running an engine or generator because exhaust from nearby vessels can send CO into the boat’s cabin or cockpit. Preventing CO exposure and poisoning also involves teaching passengers to recognize its symptoms. It’s easy for boaters to get distracted when hosting passengers on their boats, so make sure passengers know how to recognize potential CO issues. Keep a list of exposure symptoms in an accessible common area on your boat so passengers can familiarize themselves and recognize any potential problems that might arise. A case of CO poisoning can quickly turn a relaxing day on the boat into an emergency situation. Boat owners owe it to themselves and their passengers to take preventive measures to ensure no one is exposed to or poisoned by CO while out on the water.

Time to get wet, baby Just when you thought it was safe to get into the water, it may actually be — but only with plenty of adult supervision. This week we take a look at several products that keep kids safe while still letting them enjoy themselves, and one that’s just plain fun. Water safety is not something to take lightly and tragic accidents can happen in the blink of an eye, so never, ever take your eyes off of your child. POWER SWIMR (SWIMWAYS) For young children who are new to swimming, this is a great way to give them the support (literally) they need to learn at their own pace. The Power Swimr vest comes with nine removable flotation pads that are hidden inside a cute shell. With the
full nine, your child will be almost upright in the water where he or she will be able to start learning the basics. As you remove the pads, the child gradually becomes more horizontal. The vest is small enough that it doesn’t interfere with the child’s ability to get into proper swimming position. And it comes with adjustable side cords and leg straps to keep it securely in place. Available in small (for ages 2-3, 20-35 pounds), medium (35-60 pounds), and large (55-80 pounds). Prices range from $15-$20. http://www.swimways.com/ SEA SQUIRTS SWIM ASSIST (SWIMWAYS) Like the Power Swimr, Sea Squirts vests are a three-step system (small, medium, large) that includes
Sea Squirts Swim Assist several flotation pads that you can remove as your child develops skills and gains confidence. Made of neoprene (the same material used in wet suits) and sporting a lovely, orca-like dorsal fin, Sea Squirts vest are a bit more stylish than Power Swimrs, but they make swimming just as fun. Available in pink, orange, blue, and black. About $28. http://www.swimways.com/ BABY SPRING FLOAT (SWIMWAYS) Before they can learn to
swim, kids need to want to be in the water. But water can be scary and intimidating (as it should be). The Baby Spring Float is a great way to introduce babies who are too young to swim to water play in a fun, engaging way. The float itself is an easily inflatable, fabric-covered ring with a comfortable mesh seat in the middle where baby can learn the basics of kicking and paddling. And when it’s time for a break, there’s also a mesh play space that’s great for just splashing around. For mom
8 • Splash 2017 and dad, the float is extremely stable, so you’ll be able to play with your baby without worrying about whether the float will tip over. Comes in a variety of colors and with an optional, adjustable canopy for added sun protection. Appropriate for babies 9-24 months. Retails for about $25. http://www.swimways.com/ BLOW-UP BILLIARDS (SWIMWAYS) Older (water safe) kids and adults will get a blast out of this set of ten large (8-inch diameter) inflatable billiard balls that turns your pool into a pool table (with apologies to purists who know that pool tables have pockets in the corners and the long sides, while billiards have none). The set includes a cue ball and nine numbered balls. Use those long, foam “noodles” (not included) as cue sticks or move the balls underwater or by splashing them around from place to place. For all ages, but it helps if you’re tall enough to touch the bottom. About $14.95. http://www.swimways.com/ KICKBOARD (MAUI TOYS) It’s hard to imagine learning to swim or even just playing around in a pool without a kickboard. And with these stylish boards from Maui Toys, you don’t have to worry about missing out on either. Boards come in a variety of sizes, colors, and styles. Prices vary. http://www.mauitoys.com/

BOATING TRENDS
IT’S ALL ABOUT OUTBOARDS By CHELSEA CURTIS Today’s News-Herald Boat experts flocked to the 26th annual Lake Havasu Marine Association Boat Show on Saturday and provided insight into Lake Havasu City’s latest boating trends. They agreed that Havasu boaters are opting for outboard motors when buying a boat with the expectation that it will offer a better boating experience while they’re out on the lake. “The 400 horsepower outboard from Mercury Racing was kind of a big game changer, said Dave Johnson of River Dave’s Place. “That’s why outboards are surging in popularity because you get a lot of power out of a reliable package and you get more room in the boat. According to Johnson, before Mercury Racing unveiled their 400 horsepower outboard motor last year, outboard motor designs couldn’t support boats as they were being built bigger and bigger over the years. Furthermore, when compared to a boat with an inboard motor of equal horsepower, a boat with an outboard motor is lighter, said Geoff Archer, shop manager at Domn8er Powerboats. “The lighter the boat, the faster it’s going to go, he said. Outboard motors are also more fuel efficient – because they’re computer controlled and have sophisticated engines – and easier to maintain since everything is on the outside of the boat, he added. “You don’t have to crawl around inside the boat to work on the motor, said Archer.
Johnson pointed out that 300 and 400 horsepower outboard motors are also being built on pontoon boats, which he said is another “big trend in Havasu. “We used to build an inboard/outboard, the problem was it was so heavy on the back of the boats that it really made our boats sit down flat in the back end, said Roger Pilant, a representative of Crest Pontoon Boats, among others, for JR Motors. Pilant added that in addition to the outboard motors – which he says are cleaner, quieter and offer a bigger selection of horsepower – the boats can carry more people and offer more luxury due to its built in kitchens, grills and refrigerators, among others. “It used to be some 50-gallon drums welded together by some old guy in his backyard, he said. “The trend, I think, id going from those ‘go fast boats’ toward luxurious high-horsepowered, fast pontoon boats.

Tips for taking phone photos in bright sunlight By DON LINDICH
TRIBUNE NEWS SERVICE
QUESTION: When taking pictures in bright sunshine with the sun above or behind me, I can’t see the screen on my cellphone to compose a picture. I am forced to just point in the general direction and hope for the best. Is there an adapter that will let you see the screen to compose a picture? In this case I am using a Samsung S5. It takes good pictures, but the screen in sunlight is a real problem. ANSWER: I did some research on your behalf and did not find any custom-designed solutions to solve the problem. Such products may exist, but I couldn’t find any. As a start, you may want to try angling the screen very slightly toward you when you
compose. Remember that angle of incidence equals angle of reflection, so you may be able to reflect some of the sunlight away and change your viewing angle so the screen does not completely get washed out. You can tilt it back to the taking position before you press the button. This may help somewhat. Using a folding wallet case
for your phone may help. I myself use a SwitchEasy WRAP cell phone case with my iPhone 6 Plus. It has a leather sleeve that hold the phone with a folding cover that protects the screen, opening almost like a fliphone but hinged at the long end. When taking pictures outside in the sun I hold the phone so the cover part of the case opens upward, using my palms to support the
cover and position it above the screen. This shades it from the sun like an awning and my index finger is free to activate the shutter. I find this grip keeps the phone very stable as well. The SwitchEasy WRAP is only available for the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus. The only thing I do not like about the case is that after a few months of use, the sleeve does not hold the phone as securely as it did when it was new. The phone may then slide out if you are not careful as it is not secured at the open end. When it starts moving around I suggest placing a small piece of cloth behind the phone so it stays nice and snug. There are many wallet cases available for your Samsung S5. Find one that appeals to you and give it a try.

Just add water for fun with these toys Aquatic Center’s new slide debuts The hotter it gets — and it seems to be getting hotter by the day in some parts of the country — the more people want to cool off. Running your air conditioning is one way to deal with the heat, but it can be rather pricey. A cheaper — and much more fun — alternative is to go outside and get wet. Here are some of our favorite ways to soak yourself and everyone around you. WATER WARRIORS WATER BLASTERS Buzz Bee Toys makes more than a dozen different water blasters, all of which are solidly made, reasonably priced, and really fun. The Gargangua uses air pressure and what they call “aggressive soaking technology,” which lets you blast people as far as 40 feet away. Just fill it up, choose one of three nozzle settings, and start soaking. The Outlaw is a little smaller, but what it lacks in water capacity (it holds up to 48 ounces), it makes up for in distance, outblasting Gargantua by two feet. Both of these blasters are easy to pump, so little kids will be able to hold their own against bigger, older, and stronger opponents. Gargantua is for ages 8 and up, Outlaw for 5 and up. Both are under $20. www. BuzzBeeToys.com WATER SPRINKLERS Running through sprinklers on a hot summer day is one of the best parts of summer. Sadly, millions of kids who live in drought-stricken parts of the country missed out for the past few years. Fortunately, reservoirs are almost up to normal levels, so sprinklers are back! The Hydro Swirl Spinning Sprinkler connects directly to a standard garden hose and comes fully assembled, so you’ll be ready to get drenched within seconds after unboxing it. The center fountain of the Swirl spins around, spraying water in all directions, and the squirting “wiggle tubes”
ensure that no one escapes dry. Like the Swirl, the Hydro Twist Pipeline Sprinkler also connects to a standard hose and has wiggle tubes. But this sprinkler also has two fountains. The droughts may be over, but you should still soak responsibly. Both are for ages 4 and up and retail for under $15. www.primetimetoys.com BUNCH O BALLOONS Preparing for a water balloon fight can take hours, filling them with water and tying them up one at a time. Bunch O Balloons gives you an incredible advantage. Just attach it to your hose and in less than a minute, you’ve got yourself 100 filled, tied balloons, so you can get down to the serious business of battle while your opponents are still fumbling around. The pack we reviewed also included a scoop-like launcher, which can extend your range. It’s for ages 4 and up, and retails for about $13. http://bunchoballoons.com @goprimetimetoys HURRICANE WATER BALLS Bunch O Balloons may speed things up, but eventually, you’ll run out of ammo. Not so with Hurricane Water Balls, which can be reused up to 1,000 times. The clever design allows you to refill the ball by simply dunking it in a bucket of water for a few seconds. For ages 5 and up and anyone who’s looking for a more environmentally sustainable way to soak each other. They’re about $12 for a package of three. http://hurricanewaterballs.com
Lake Havasu City recently unveiled its new and improved water slide at the Aquatic Center. Last year, city engineers noted that the previous slide — which stood at the Aquatic center for 24 years — was beginning to show its age. Rusted support structures may not have posed an immediate threat to visitors, but structural engineers said the slide would need to be replaced soon. The new slide was ordered in October, following a contingency budget measure to provide $180,000 for its purchase. The 250-foot-long, 25-foot-tall multicolored slide opened this spring. According to Aquatic Recreation Supervisor Swan Cooke, the slide has always been not only a draw, but part of what makes Havasu’s Aquatic Center unique. “We wanted to open in time for May,” Cooke said. “It’s a huge thing for kids’ end-of-the-school year parties. They come from places like Quartzsite, Mohave Valley...they don’t have swimming pools like ours. This is kind of their Disneyland.” According to Cooke, the new slide takes advantage of technology unavailable in 1993. She says the slide will offer a smoother, faster ride; with translucent sections for a more colorful atmosphere.

Makeup for hot weather LOS ANGELES TIMES
Most women won’t forego putting on a face just because the mercury’s rising, turning their skin into a slippery mess. The smart ones, though, get smarter about the products they use and how they apply them. “When it’s hot, makeup doesn’t stick. It will literally slide off the face,” says Allie Lapidus, a commercial makeup artist in Los Angeles. “In the summer, be sure to create a really good base so that everything stays on better.” Lapidus says it’s best to keep layers minimal because “an extra layer of anything on the skin makes it feel heavy. The thinner the layers, the more it’s going to stick.” FACE: As a first step, Lapidus recommends using oil-free, highly pigmented concealers and moisturizers, instead of foundation, and applying as little as possible to prevent it from sliding. To bring a fresh summer glow to the cheeks, Lapidus suggests gels and stains instead of powders and cream.
Sunscreen tied to a marked reduction in skin cancer, up to 80 percent By ALLIE SHAH
EYES: For eyes, Lapidus recommends applying either a primer or a dab of foundation before putting on shadow to help it stick, and following it up with a gel liner, instead of waxy, melt-prone pencils or tricky-toapply liquids, and then topping it off with waterproof mascara. LIPS: For lips, there are lots of options for giving a hint of color without the heaviness of a lipstick. Again, Lapidus recommends highly pigmented products, such as balms and butters, that build up color through layering.
STAR TRIBUNE (MINNEAPOLIS)
The rates of melanoma — the deadliest form of skin cancer — have doubled in the last 30 years, but finally there’s some good news to report. Researchers have discovered that using sunscreen may prevent skin cancer by 80 percent. While it has long been known that sunscreens are an effective guard against sunburns, their ability to protect against melanoma has previously been unknown. Scientists from Ohio State University tested the application of a variety of sunscreens with SPF 30 on mice before exposing them to UVB light. The mice were genetically engineered to have skin that closely resembles humans. The results? All of the sunscreens with
SPF 30 reduced the risk of melanoma by 80 percent. “They all worked,” lead researcher Christian Burd said in a news release. “Now, for the first time, we have a mechanism to say, ‘yes, this sunscreen can protect against melanoma.’ and we hope that we can now use that information to develop better, smarter sunscreens.” The study, while promising, does have some limitations. It was conducted on animals and it used only UVB light — not the entire UV spectrum emitted through sunlight. In addition, the mice were exposed to a short burst of UVB light — the same exposure level as spending a week of concentrated time in the sun. Researchers presented their findings recently at the American Association for Cancer Research Annual Meeting.

Rules of thumb for rookie boat drivers Learning to boat or sail is similar to learning to drive an automobile. Neither one happens overnight. Learning to get around on the water can be exciting, but it can also be intimidating to take over the reins of a boat for the first time. Though beginners might be apprehensive when they first start to boat or sail, there are some tips that can make it a little easier for those new to captaining their own ship. START SMALL Much like teenagers learning to drive are often more comfortable learning behind the wheel of a compact car, boating beginners might be more comfortable learning to sail on a small boat. Smaller boats are easier to maneuver, making even the most nervous novice a little more comfortable.
CHOOSE CALM WATERS IN WHICH TO PRACTICE. According to the United States Coast Guard, in 2010 there were more than 4,600 recreational boating accidents that involved 672 deaths. Though boating accidents in both the United States and Canada, where the Canadian government expected roughly 200 boaters to die on the water in 2009, have been on the decline, accident statistics illustrate just how dangerous it can be even for fully licensed and experienced sailors to operate a boat. That said, beginners should always practice in calm waters that don’t boast big waves or lots of fellow boaters. This gives beginners the chance to learn the feel of the boat without the added pressure of handling choppy waters or traffic.
READ WEATHER REPORTS Veteran boaters struggle with inclement weather from time to time, so beginners should expect to struggle with adverse conditions as well. But don’t be caught off guard by bad weather. Always check the weather reports before going out, and be sure to bring along appropriate attire and gear.

There always seems to be a new and intriguing way to enjoy the water. Especially in and around the agua-haven known as Lake Havasu—and particularly in the summer time when temperatures are routinely in the triple digits. This summer is no different with the introduction of the Hobie Mirage Eclipse, billed as the world’s first leg-powered stand up board, which comes in two models (the 10.5 and 12) to accommo- The Eclipse is available in two date every enthusiast. colors: Lunar Blue and Solar Southwest Kayaks, Yellow. at 423 English Village in Lake Havasu City, is thrilled to be a part of bringing it to the public. “We’ve had multiple calls on them,” Southwest manager Kial Melendez said after introducing the product to Havasu last year. In fact, before the Mirage Eclipses even arrived, deposits had already been placed on the store’s first four, and a waiting list was started for the ones to follow. The demographic that Melendez thinks the watercraft will really be popular with is women, because, as he said, “It’s an exercise thing. It’s kinda like a Stairmaster in the water, which we think they’ll like.” If any customer, however, is not sure the Mirage Eclipse is something they might want, no worries, because Southwest Kayaks plans to allow folks to try the cruiser before buying, which is a win-win for everyone. “With so many people that come (to Havasu) on big weekends; so many different age groups, it will get them into the shop here,” Melendez said. “That should make for a good summer.”
Kids need more sunscreen LOS ANGELES TIMES
Sunscreens should be used regularly by people of all ages to prevent skin cancer, including the most dangerous form of cancer linked to sunburns: melanoma. However, a new study shows that kids are really bad about using sunscreen consistently. Researchers studied fifth-grade children in Massachusetts in 2004 and then re-surveyed the same 360 children three years later. In the first survey, more than half of the kids said they had experienced at least one sunburn, and this rate did not change three years later. Moreover, in the later survey, kids said they were spending even more time in the sun. In the first survey, 50 percent of kids said they “often or always” used sunscreen when outside for at least six hours in the summer. Three years later, only 25 percent said they did.
