Good deeds result after ‘God Friended Me’ in new CBS series Of all the friend requests you might not expect on social media, one from the deity has to rank high. Nevertheless, it’s received by an atheistic podcast host – played by Brandon Micheal Hall, of the unusual middle-name spelling and last season’s “The Mayor” – in “God Friended Me,” a CBS series premiering Sunday, Sept. 30 (though the opening episode has been available on various digital platforms since the end of August). Hall’s character Miles unites with a journalist (Violett Beane, “The Flash”) to determine whether the heavenly account is for real, doing good deeds for others along the way. It can’t be a coincidence “God Friended Me” inherits the time slot “Touched by an Angel” long had, though the new show

also has an edge, defined in part (at least in the early going) by Miles’ conflict with his minister father (“Scandal” Emmy winner Joe Morton). Also suggesting its approach, the series was created by “Gotham” and “Hawaii Five0” alumni Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt. “A few years ago,” Wynbrandt recalls, “I was driving over to Steven’s house, and I got a push notification on my phone for a friend suggestion from an old friend. And a thought occurred to me in that moment: ‘What if someone claiming to be God sent me a friend request on Facebook?’ As a nonbeliever, it sort of struck me as, ‘Wow, that would be an interesting conflict.’ And I called Steven, and he said to me, ‘That’s a really cool idea. What if they sent friend suggestions every week

(of people) that these people could help?’ So that was the genesis of ‘God Friended Me.’ ” Hall’s mother is a minister, so he has the background to state, “Church is the ultimate theater. You have a stage. You have the text. You have the actors. And you have the message that’s coming through. So, for me, that was my entrance into what I’m doing now ... watching my mother and using that as a gateway into making her laugh, because I used to take the church and make it funny for her, to make it a little bit more enlightening for her.

PBS’ ‘POV“ illustrates how ‘Dark Money’ influences elections and public policy With midterm election campaign ads at full volume these days, a program such as “Dark Money” should be required viewing. Airing Monday, Oct. 1, on PBS (check local listings), the 90-minute “POV” documentary looks at the influence of unregulated and anonymous campaign contributions on elections – and its downstream effect on public policy and the passing of legislation – through the investigations of Montana journalist John S. Adams, a former capital bureau chief for the Great Falls Tribune, into his own state’s affairs. In a state with a long history of corruption, Adams has seen its corrosive effects up close – corporations polluting in Butte with no fear of governmental reprisal – much of it an upshot of the landmark 2010 Supreme Court decision Citizens United that granted corporations individual rights with regard to free speech and the ability to give unlimited funds to the candidate of its choice. Basically, he explains, it works like this: The corporation donates money to a political action committee, which then funnels that cash to the campaign of the candidate, manifesting itself in attack ads, robocalls, fliers and mailings. But since the PAC was created to conceal the donor’s identity, the voter is left clueless as to who bought the ad. All they can do, as one Montana politician says in the film, is ask: “Who is

paying for this? What are they attempting to buy?” The candidate then wins the election and does the corporation’s bidding, while the average Joe is left to live with the results. “Scary times,” says another politician, and Adams agrees. “If we don’t know where the money’s coming from,” he explains, “then we don’t know if there is quid pro quo corruption. We don’t know if politicians are literally being bought, that favors are being granted. Because if we don’t know who is giving the money, we don’t know if those same people are also the friends of these politicians or whatnot. And so, the anonymity opens up the door, in my view, to just wholesale corruption.” The best ammunition against these forces, says Adams, is knowledge. His efforts in print managed to expose these practices in Montana, and by 2015 voters had caught on and the ads eventually lost their effectiveness. The state also passed stronger campaign finance laws. Which is why, he says, the watchdog role of the journalist is more critical than ever.

KRISTEN BELL Kristen Anne Bell was born July 18, 1980 in Huntington Woods, Michigan to Lorelei (née Frygier) and Tom Bell. Bell has been a vegetarian since she was 11. She graduated from Shrine Catholic High School in Royal Oak, Michigan in 1998. She was named the yearbook’s “Best Looking Girl” by senior class vote. A feature film was released in 2014, which was funded by a Kickstarter fundraising campaign. In August 2018, it was reported that Hulu is planning an eight-episode revival of the series. Bell portrayed Elle Bishop on “Heroes” in 2007.

Not only are the Boston Red Sox in the playoffs this week, their top off-season acquisition J.D. Martinez could be vying for a shot at the Triple Crown as the season comes to an end. Barring a monumental collapse, Martinez and the Red Sox should be the top seed in the American League, and thus hosting a playoff game when the American League Divisional Series begins Friday, October 5 on TBS. But there’s more! The Red Sox final regular season game is also at home at Fenway Park on Sunday, September 30 against the New York Yankees, who appear to be headed for the American League Wild Card game. Martinez came into the league with the Houston Astros in 2011, but was released in 2014. The Tigers traded him to the Arizona Diamondbacks mid-way through the 2017 season, after which Martinez opted for free agency and signed a five-year deal with Boston. He’s been a big reason the Red Sox have dominated this season, and he could propel Boston through the postseason.

Lamprey drinks in the world’s imbibing cultures in BrewDog Network’s ‘Four Sheets’ Anthony Bourdain often said he had no problem “taking one for the team” – aka consuming something that he knew would make him sick – if it made for a better TV show. Zane Lamprey, the host of “Four Sheets” on the recently debuted streaming service BrewDog Network, no doubt took a page from his late friend’s playbook when filming his series’ premiere episode in Cuzco, Peru, in which which he took part in a local cleansing ceremony involving the poison of a tree frog that wound up making him violently ill. It was an experience, he says, that was worse than he expected, but one he doesn’t regret. “I did all the research just to find out medically how safe it was and then I find out it’s generally safe,” he explains. “And so I went down there to do it and just expected it to be something uncomfortable and I would throw up. I didn’t expect it to really be the level of discomfort that it was, but I’m OK that it was. I’m happy that I did it, and the show deserved it so, you know, I wanted to throw myself into the show, and I think that that shows that I did.” “I need to be entertaining,” he continues. “I have to push myself and push my boundaries. But I’m also going to be honest. So I think that that’s sort of what I appreciate about what I’m able to do, is if I don’t know something or something doesn’t taste good or something tastes great or whatever it is, I’m

just going to be honest about it. And I always find that I’m not alone.” In the half-hour series, the former host of such shows as “Three Sheets,” “Drinking Made Easy” and “Chug” goes around the world to take in the drinking cultures in various locations. In addition to Cuzco (not far from Machu Picchu), Lamprey and his production crew visited Grand Cayman, Mexico City, the Greek island of Santorini, Switzerland and the stop he says was the most surprising, Paris. It was here he and his crew went to different cafes and establishments, drank with locals and learned about the city’s long history with alcohol, including its consumption of absinthe and the fact that the Bloody Mary was invented there. They even rented out the Eiffel Tower for an hour, but Lamprey says the highlight was just in meeting and talking with Parisians about the Parisian experience. “That’s kind of one of the things that’s sort of the magic of this show,” he says, “(is) what happens when you have a drink. People just loosen up ... to the point where they’re honest with you. And someone who is afraid to go on camera because they’re afraid that their English is poor, after a few drinks you find out that their English is great. They’re just nervous because they don’t want to look stupid. And when they have a few drinks they don’t care and they look great.”

You recently released a new album “Bridges.” Can you tell us about it?

Well, I mean growing up I loved great storytellers. I loved Carole King and Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel and people who twisted genres and had “Bridges” was just a two-year labor of voices that were very unique, whether love. So many songs just came out of it was the Three Tenors or Bjork, thin air that just exceeded any of our people that I could listen to and knew expectations. I got to work with some it was them within three seconds. And incredible producers and co-writers. I loved rhythm, I loved world music. And I wanted to take the formula, so And then I grew up having more to speak, of kind of the first couple of classical training and more theater albums and modernize that and just training, and so the combination of sing my ass off with songs that I felt getting a more traditional training were personal and inspiring. And so as ever, my albums are a little hard to with I think some of those other define and describe, but it’s one of my eclectic influences always blended each other into this lane that, like I favorites that I’ve ever done. said, has been hard to define, but has been my own for almost 20 years Looking back, who have been now. your musical influences?
