With “The Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals” both over, it’s only logical that The CW would want to keep the popular horror franchise going. It does that with the premiere of returning creator-producer Julie Plec’s “Legacies” Thursday, Oct. 25. The new show follows Hope Mikaelson (Danielle Rose Russell, continuing her “Originals” role) as she enters the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted – which obviously takes its name from Stefan Salvatore of “The Vampire Diaries.” Hope joins other descendants of vampires, werewolves and witches as they become educated in controlling their supernatural ways. Plec explains that as the saga is reset just outside Mystic Falls, “the locals think it’s a school for rich kids, but inside is a wonderful cast of young, supernatural beings. They’ve either been cursed by genetics or cursed by supernatural bloodlines. They have some element of them that, and were they to unleash it, it could be a dark thing ... and they all have it in them to be the villain of our story.” However, adds Plec, “Through love and acceptance and being embraced, and being around like-minded people with tolerance and all the things that come along with being supernatural, because it’s a boarding school, we are hoping that we can show the path to all of them individually being the hero.” Actress Russell allows of Hope, “I’ve only played her for a year, and I so fell in love with playing the character. Even in the way she does her makeup and the way she dresses, it’s a little edgier (now). It’s a little more adult. She’s definitely matured and grown up a bit since things that happened to her on ‘The Originals.’ And in her attitude and being in the school itself, it has helped me really navigate how I’m going about playing her in a much different way. “She’s always been mature for her age,” Russell notes. “She’s been through things unimaginable, but she was definitely faced with a little more innocence, even little things. She had never had her first kiss before, and she was naive and making these bad decisions. And now that she’s kind of grown (and) has been through so much, I really focus on small things.” Matthew Davis also resumes his role as Alaric Saltzman, whose twin daughters Josie and Lizzie (played by Kaylee Bryant and Jenny Boyd) also are among the school’s students. “It’s been a fascinating journey,” Davis reflects. “I remember when I signed on to do just a four-episode arc, and it turned into (being) this regular on ‘The Vampire Diaries’ and (a guest on) ‘The Originals,’ and now this. It was clear to me that Alaric’s story was not finished.”

Ancient civilizations revealed and re-created in PBS’ ‘Native America’ History books tell us that the first peoples arrived in the Americas more than 10,000 years ago during the last Ice Age. A new documentary series premiering this week on PBS explores just who they were. “Native America,” a four-part series airing Tuesdays beginning Oct. 23 (check local listings), delves into the civilizations that existed in North and South America long before the Europeans arrived, ones that had massive cities connected by social networks and sophisticated systems of science, art, architecture and writing. Narrated by Robbie Robertson, former guitarist of The Band, the four hourlong episodes look at Great Nations and the cities, sacred stories and history that until recently had been undiscovered, going to locations including New Mexico, Peru, upstate New York, Brazil, the Grand Canyon, Mexico and the banks of the Mississippi to reveal cultures that existed long before ours. “I think the most surprising thing viewers will find,” says series producer Julianna Brannum, “is the scale in sophistication of the cities that were created. The alignments, all the thought and the planning and the labor that went into these is just mindblowing, and some of these cities make the pyramids of Egypt look like child’s play. It’s just massive, beautiful, sophisticated architecture.” That’s apparent in the opening minutes of Tuesday’s premiere, which visits Chaco Canyon in northwest New Mexico, a major center of culture for Ancient Pueblo Peoples about 1,000 years ago and one of North America’s largest cities. main building was a place where thousands came to learn about Earth’s natural forces and was a thriving center of science and spirituality. Today, its ruins are a national historical park and a place where Hopi still come to perform ancient rituals. “Chaco Canyon ... has extraordinary ruins there,” executive producer Gary Glassman says. “And, of course, we bring some of that to life through 3D animation, but what really brings it to life is the Hopi people who go there and share some of the ceremonies that would have been done there. They do a ceremony in a kiva (a room for religious rituals), a thousandyearold kiva. But they do ceremonies in their own kivas in their own villages today.”

Jeffrey Dean Morgan was born April 22, 1966 in Seattle, Washington to Sandy Thomas and Richard Dean Morgan. He was captain of the basketball team at Lake Washington High School in Kirkland, Washington. He continued to play basketball at Skagit Valley College before being sidelined by an injury. Morgan played John Winchester, the father of main characters Sam and Dean, in the CW drama series “Supernatural.” He had a recurring role on ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” as heart transplant patient Denny Duquette. He appeared in two episodes of the Showtime comedy-drama series “Weeds” as Judah Botwin, the deceased husband of central character Nancy Botwin. Morgan has guest-starred on many television series, including “Sliders,” “Walker, Texas Ranger,” “ER,” “Angel,” “JAG,” “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” “Monk,” “The O.C.” and “Shameless.” He played The Comedian in the superhero film “Watchmen” (2009). In 2014, Morgan portrayed Joe DiMaggio in the Lifetime miniseries “The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe.” He played Deaf Smith in the History Channel miniseries “Texas Rising” (2015). Morgan played freelance investigator Jason Crouse in the CBS series “The Good Wife.”

Morgan married actress Anya Longwell on May 30, 1992, and divorced in 2003. He was briefly engaged to former “Weeds” costar Mary Louise Parker in 2007. In 2009, he began a relationship with actress Hilarie Burton, who he married in 2014. The couple has two children: a son born in March 2010 and a daughter born in February 2018. Morgan and actor Paul Rudd are co-owners of Samuel’s Sweet Shop, a candy store in Rhinebeck, New York.

Just minutes into his third game of the season against Kansas State, West Virginia Mountaineers senior quarterback Will Grier dropped back to pass on second down. Sprinting down the sidelines was receiver Marcus Simms, who was a few steps ahead of the coverage. Grier threw a perfect strike, hitting Simms in stride for what turned out to be an 82-yard, catch-and-run touchdown; the first of five Grier would throw in a 35-6 rout of their Big 12 rival. Grier and his Mountaineers host the Baylor Bears, Thursday, October 25 on Fox Sports 1. Grier’s college career has been rocky, but productive. He red-shirted at Florida as a freshman in 2014, breaking into the Gators lineup in 2015. He was then suspended for using a banned, over-the-counter supplement. He also opted to transfer to West Virginia and thus sat out the 2016 season. In 2017 he began showing signs of promise, only to suffer a season-ending finger injury in Week 11. Deciding to return to West Virginia for his senior season, Grier leads one of the most exciting offenses in college football and has the Mountaineers competing for a Big 12 title. He’s a pro-style, dual-threat quarterback who is allowed to call plays for his offense; not something you see in every program. If he can stay healthy and continue to put up big numbers, his stock as a Heisman Trophy candidate will only continue to rise – as will his draft day position when NFL teams come calling in the spring.

‘A Chef’s Life: The Final Harvest’ caps five seasons for award-winning PBS docuseries Just as the growing season is ending in much of the United States, so is the run of PBS’ “A Chef ’s Life” – and its makers intend to send it out in a blaze of Southern glory. Airing Monday, Oct. 22 (check local listings), the hourlong special titled appropriately enough “A Chef ’s Life: The Final Harvest” follows chef and restaurateur Vivian Howard and husband Ben Knight as they host a harvest dinner of epic proportions in a cornfield adjacent to their Deep Run, N.C., home, joined by children Theo and Flo, Howard’s parents John and Scarlett, farmers Miss Lillie Hardy and Warren Brothers, and staff of their nearby Kinston restaurant Chef & the Farmer, as all mark the end of summer and celebrate five seasons of the Daytime Emmy and Peabody Award-winning series. “We’ve done something really fun with the primary cast of characters that have shown up many times over the years ...,” Howard notes. “They all have little segments where they talk about their experience on the show, and there’s some fun flashback sequences with all of them.” Also on tap are a handful of bucket list items that Howard has always wanted to tackle on the series, including a harvest favorite that some refer to as “Southern kimchi.”

“It’s called chow chow,” Howard explains, “and chow chow is a relish that is historically made from what’s left in your garden at the end of the growing season. So that would often be things like green tomatoes – because the tomatoes won’t ripen because of the shorter length of the day with less sunlight. Cabbage. Peppers, which are always hanging in a garden until the garden is plowed up. So those would be the quintessential ingredients in chow chow. And chow chow is a relish that we put on a lot of rich foods here in the South to kind of balance them.” Even as “A Chef ’s Life” is ending, Howard is hard at work on a series that at this writing had no title and no firm premiere date, with each episode focusing on a single dish that transcends cultures, be it a broth, a dumpling or a way of cooking greens. “In this series, I learn from friends of mine who live in and around the South ... who are of different cultures,” she says. “Some of them are immigrants. I study and learn from a Native American tribe, the Lumbee Indians. I spend some time on Edisto Island (S.C.) with a Geechee Gullah cook. So we’re learning from the different voices from the South that we haven’t always heard from. And the hope is to show us how we’re all more alike than we are different through the foods that we share.”
