A young Angeleno pursues sex, love and a possible alien conspiracy in ‘Now Apocalypse’ Ulysses is a man adrift. As played by Avan Jogia (“Tut,” “Twisted”) in the trippy coming-of-age comedy series “Now Apocalypse,” created and executive produced by Greg Araki (“Kaboom,” “Mysterious Skin”) and premiering Sunday, March 10, on Starz, he’s a Millennial gay man searching for himself and fame in Los Angeles – when he’s not hooking up with lovers and indulging his love of marijuana. Alongside him on their own quests are pals Carly (Kelli Berglund, “Lab Rats”), a struggling actress stuck in a dead-

end relationship with a self-absorbed boyfriend; Ford (Beau Mirchoff, “Awkward”), a pretty boy aspiring screenwriter and Uly’s best friend from college; and Ford’s girlfriend Severine (Roxane Mesquida, “Gossip Girl”), a dedicated NASA scientist and French transplant. All are in search of goals common to young adults, namely life, love and lots of sex. But what Uly’s friends don’t have in common with him are his disturbing visions of impending apocalypse and an alien conspiracy – which he suspects may be a product of his THC-saturated brain.

“I think that paranoia is such a theme in this show,” says Jogia, “and what I like about this show is that you’re not sure whether this is really happening or not, like whether these alien visions are real.” While he may be questioning his own sanity, there is no doubt about Uly’s sex drive. “I kind of explain him as sort of a sexual astronaut,” Jogia says. “He’s exploring the reaches of the world around him and he’s excited about it and it’s something he takes a lot of joy and passion in. And he’s trying to find love, on Grindr, on apps. That’s sort of a hard thing in this day and age. And I think that he’s kind of like the most traditional, funnily enough, of all the characters because he just wants to be loved and to love someone. And the other characters, I think, are going through more of an exploration even in a way than he is.” Indeed, while Carly combats boredom/earns an extra buck doing sexy webcam performances and Severine questions her relationship with Ford, Uly drifts along from hook-up to hook-up, until one night while walking home he stumbles upon what appears to be a man having sex with a lizard-like alien. Freaked, he confides in Carly what he saw. She’s skeptical. “She loves him to death but just thinks he’s so high that he’s seeing things,” Berglund says. “Doesn’t believe it, is like, ‘OK, maybe you stop smoking so much weed.’ And I don’t know if there’s a moment where she sees the whole alien thing for herself. ... Like is it a metaphor or is it real? It could be both.” “She keeps me tethered to like some sort of reality,” Jogia adds. “And I smoke more pot and then less pot and more pot and less pot throughout the show and you see a difference. So it’s sort of interesting to figure out if this is all happening at all. But I think Carly is definitely someone who grounds him and anchors him.”

HBO’s ‘The Case Against Adnan Syed’ brings fresh scrutiny to a 20-year-old murder case A 1999 murder case that became the subject of a popular podcast gets renewed focus in a four-part documentary debuting this week on HBO. In “The Case Against Adnan Syed,” premiering Sunday, March 10, Oscar-nomined documentarian Amy Berg (“Deliver Us From Evil”) reinvestigates the murder of Hae Min Lee, an 18-year-old Baltimore Country high-school student who disappeared and was found dead in a local park. She had recently ended a romance with popular athlete and classmate Adnan Syed, who was eventually convicted of the crime and sentenced to life in prison. But he and his family maintained his innocence. In 2014, the podcast “Serial” debuted, shedding new light on the case. Also, new evidence had come forth challenging the reliability of cellphone data linking Syed to the crime scene. In 2018, his conviction was vacated but the state

of Maryland appealed. A decision on whether a retrial will go forward is expected later this year. The documentary brings a fresh eye to the case using interviews with key players, new evidence and entries from the deceased girl’s journal, along with archival footage, family photos and documents from the case file. “I wasn’t satisfied with the case that was presented in 1999 and the outcome after listening to ‘Serial,’ ” Berg explained to a recent gathering of journalists in Pasadena, Calif. “I felt very frustrated about that. I went into it trying to understand what actually happened and investigate the original investigation. Three and a half years later, I still feel very frustrated that the police detectives didn’t do their job in a thorough way, because we probably wouldn’t be sitting here today if there was more of an investigation done at the time.

Allen Kelsey Grammer was born on Feb. 21, 1955, in Charlotte Amalie, Saint Thomas. He has known his share of tragedy: His father was murdered, he had a younger sister who was assaulted and killed, and his two half-brothers died while scuba diving. While attending a private school in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Grammer took up performing – and he earned a scholarship to the renowned Juilliard School, though he was expelled for not going to classes. Bourdais goes for the hat trick at St. Pete

Sebastien Bourdais seemingly had everything going against him in last year’s Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. Winless in seven previous attempts in the IndyCar season opener, the 40-year-old France native and St. Pete transplant got off to an inauspicious start in last year’s race on the 1.8-mile, 14-turn street course by starting last in the field of 21, the result of running into a bumpered wall during the first lap of qualifying the day prior. But after that, Bourdais performed like the champion that he is, taking the lead on lap 37 and never looking back. From there, he led the field for 69 of the next 74 laps to take the checkered flag by more than 20 seconds ahead of his closest pursuer, Graham Rahal, and bag his second-consecutive win in the Gulf Coast city. For Bourdais, it was yet another laurel in a storied career in which he has 37 IndyCar/Champ Car wins, sixth on the all-time list, and four consecutive Champ Car series titles. And he’s only the third driver in IndyCar/Champ Car history to do a worst-tofirst performance after Scott Dixon at Mid-Ohio in 2014 and Max Papis at Laguna Seca in ‘01. He comes into this year’s season opener off a 2018 that saw him finish seventh in points, his best showing since 2007, before the IndyCar/Champ Car merger. CLEO TV’s ‘New Soul Kitchen’ shows how to make quick, easy, healthy dishes Those who like their cooking instruction in small bites – pardon the pun – might want to check out a short-form culinary show debuting this week on CLEO TV. In “New Soul Kitchen,” premiering Saturday, March 16, chefs Jernard Wells (“Food Network Star”) and Porsche Thomas (“Hungry”) are the hosts of 10-minute episodes that follow each as they prepare an easy-to-make recipe. All revolve around a common theme but are approached from different angles, as Wells specializes in Southern cuisine and Thomas leans vegan. So for example in an episode with the theme “Between Two Buns,” Wells prepares a smoked gouda cheeseburger while Thomas whips up a vegan sloppy joe. And each is done in a five-minute segment filmed in real time with no breaks or time lapses. “There’s not a lot of room for error,” Wells acknowledges. “And the thing is, you have to be on point. But cooking in real time is really how we want to show (the food prep) because that’s how if you’re at home cooking in the comfort of your home, you’re cooking in real time. And we want to teach people that cooking is not a bad thing because some people are like, ‘Cooking? Oh, I gotta go in the kitchen and slave over the stove.’ It can actually be fun and you can do it in a fraction of the time.” Among the dishes on the “Kitchen” menu are Wells’ hot water cornbread, smoked turkey

collard greens and a smoked four-cheese mac, while Thomas’ creations tend toward things like a vegan lasagna, a scrambled tofu breakfast burrito and a blueberry cheesecake made with cashews. Despite what appear to be waist-expanding foods – especially Wells’ meals – both chefs found ways to reduce calories from their dishes through simple measures such as baking a fried chicken to reduce fat content. “It’s the braising method,” Wells explains. “You fry the chicken just long enough to get the crust the way you want it and you finish it off in the oven to extract the remaining grease out of it. ... Because what ovens do is they extract, they dehydrate. So if you fry some fish or fry some chicken, you put it in the oven afterwards on an oven rack, at least 40 percent of the grease will drain back out of it.” Both chefs believe there is a lot of emotion associated with cooking and Wells maintains that Southern cuisine to him is “cooking with love.” Both endeavor to bring that to the show and their dishes. “For me, I had so much emotional association with food and so I only make the foods I’ve always loved growing up,” Thomas says. “And I just found ways and played with recipes to find ways to make that same dish but like vegan. So it’s definitely that same idea of putting your history into it and just creating that thing that sparked that same thing in you that it always did growing up.”
