Hello again, ‘Roseanne’: ABC revives classic sitcom New era, very familiar “Roseanne.” Among current series revivals, Emmy winner Roseanne Barr’s sitcom about the earthy, colorful Conner family returns 21 years later with new ABC episodes starting Tuesday, March 27. Most of the original cast is back, also including John Goodman, recent “Lady Bird” Oscar nominee Laurie Metcalf (who won three “Roseanne” Emmys), Sara Gilbert, Michael Fishman and both “Beckys”: Lecy Goranson and Sarah Chalke, the latter in a different role now. “I always wanted to have a 10th year,” Barr says, “so that I could do exactly what I did in these nine (episodes), which was to finish and complete the story of this family. I always had that in my head, that that was how it would go. And so, I’m very happy that we got a 10th season (the new round of stories) and we got to do that.” One big question of the new “Roseanne” – answered very early in the first episode – is how husband Dan can return, since he supposedly died in the original version. “I didn’t really care” how the character was brought back, Goodman maintains. “I thought it was a clever way to do it, to handle it and get it out of the way.” Also back are executive producers Tom Werner and Bruce Helford, with comedian Whitney Cummings now sharing that job. Helford explains that “Roseanne” still aims “to

get honest feelings out there, within a family that’s relatable. There is really no show that we could think of that’s dealing with it in the same way, with these kinds of issues, ...or they can’t, honestly. “We have, I think, a beloved place in the hearts of the American viewers,” adds Helford, “and we wanted to get out there and do something that we felt would be valuable to maybe healing things and putting everybody’s cards on the table.” Additionally, Werner notes, “This was a show about female empowerment, about people speaking their minds, so it was very important for us to come back and honor that. We felt the bar was high, but we’re extremely proud of the fact that we’re dealing with relevant issues now, just like the issues that we dealt with before opioids and an aging parent and healthcare.” As for the difference in the real Roseanne as the series returns, Barr reflects, “I think that I’ve grown up. I have six grandchildren, and I’m 65 years old. And I’m so happy that I have Medicaid. Or is it Medicare? I always get those mixed up. I think that I’ve mellowed as far as (being) my own person ... but I think everybody who hits 65 is more mellow than they were in their 40s.”

Along the way, she visits critical locations and interviews key players, hoping to find important details that others may have missed and reveal the truth behind these crimes. “Sometimes it’s not a mistake,” Clark says. “Sometimes it’s just they don’t have the opportunity to find out. In some cases, technology wasn’t there yet or they simply didn’t have the ability to collect the evidence that would prove the person’s guilt. So it isn’t necessarily a screw-up. Marcia Clark many reasons why things get missed to even begin to list them.” Among the cases she investigates in the seven two-hour episodes are the death of Casey Anthony’s daughter Caylee (the series opener), the murder of actor Robert Blake’s wife Bonny Lee Bakley, the disappearance of Drew Peterson’s wife Stacy, and the death of Federal Bureau of Prisons intern Chandra Levy. Just about every investigation brings a “whoa!” moment for Clark, including one in the Peterson episode where she asked Peterson’s defense attorney his opinion on what happened to Stacy. His hesitation, to her, spoke volumes.

Roseanne Cherrie Barr was born November 3, 1952 in Salt Lake City, Utah. She is the oldest of four children born to Helen and Jerome Hershel “Jerry” Barr. Barr became pregnant out of wedlock at the age of 18 and moved to a Salvation Army home for unwed mothers in Denver, Colorado. She gave birth to her first daughter on May 16, 1971, and gave her up for adoption. She reunited with her daughter, Brandi Brown, 17 years later. On February 4, 1974, she married Bill Pentland, a motel clerk she met in Colorado. The couple had three children: Jessica, Jennifer and Jake. Roseanne and Bill divorced on January 16, 1990 after 16 years of marriage. Four days after the end of her first marriage, Barr married fellow comedian Tom Arnold. On April 18, 1994, Barr filed for divorce from Arnold, citing irreconcilable differences. On February 14, 1995, she married Ben Thomas, her one-time personal security guard. They conceived a child through IVF, and Barr gave birth to their son, Buck, later that year. The couple divorced in 2002. Barr filed as a Green Party presidential candidate in 2012 before losing the nomination to Jill Stein. After losing the Green Party nomination, she announced that she would run on the Peace and Freedom Party ticket. Barr received 67,326 votes nationwide, placing sixth overall. She was followed by a film crew throughout her campaign, which was released as a film called “Roseanne for President!” Barr starred in a wildly successful family sitcom, “Roseanne,” from 1988 to 1997. For her part in the show, she won an Emmy, a Golden Globe, a Kids Choice Award and three American Comedy Awards. The series will return for a nine episode revival starting Tuesday, March 27 on ABC.

Jamie Hartman: Fishing the dream

Professional fishing may be a hard sport to figure for those who have never paid much attention to it, but anyone who has ever wet a line knows it can’t be easy to endure three or more consecutive days in a boat on the water, no matter the weather. Couple that with the pressure of trying to land five fish that cumulatively weigh more than that of their competitors, also for those three days in a row, and you have the makings of the 48th Bassmaster Classic, which airs Saturday, March 31 on ESPN2. Fifty-two anglers on the B.A.S.S. (Bass Anglers Sportsman Society) Elite Series tour have qualified for this year’s Classic. One of them is first-timer Jamie Hartman. A native of Newport, New York, Hartman is certainly the epitome of a working-class hero. Working as a truck driver and enjoying competitive archery shooting, he eventually tried his luck in a local bass tournament, which he won. From there Hartman began fishing local and regional tournaments, earning his way up the competitive ladder in much the same way that an amateur golfer works their way to the pro circuit. After performing well in both B.A.S.S. and FLW tournaments, he qualified in 2017 for the Bassmasters Elite Series, and just missed Rookie of the Year honors, at the age of 44. Now it’s off to the Classic for Hartman, which takes place on Lake Hartwell, near Greenville, South Carolina. Winning, or even making a top-ten showing, would only take this angler’s dream to yet another level.

Fusion’s ‘Food Exposed’ illustrates the true cost of what we eat All food comes with a cost, not just in terms of dollars and cents, but also who and what is sacrificed to produce it. And after watching “Food Exposed,” you’ll have a better idea what that is. Premiering Tuesday, March 27, on Fusion, the eight-part documentary series presents an eye-opening look at the most pertinent issues affecting food production and examines what the true costs are for farmers, workers and the environment. Hosted by British journalist Nelufar Hedayat (“The Traffickers”), the series covers topics such as dairy, fish, water, GMOs (genetically modified organisms), superfoods, palm oil and pork and features interviews with celebrity activists James Cromwell, Nicole Richie, Jordana Brewster, Dominic Monaghan and Moby. “I was absolutely engrossed in the whole idea of food and where it comes from and about what it costs people and the planet,” Hedayat says. “And that was my main thing ... like, what am I doing? This was a thing that I do ritualistically. I eat more than I’ve ever prayed. ... And yet I eat and I have my rituals around food religiously. You know, the gatherings, the parties. We do it all the time. ... And I thought this is something that everyone’s going to want to talk about and learn.”

The opening episode, “Waste,” is an attentiongetter. Here, Hedayat goes on a “trash tour” of New York’s Greenwich Village, where a group of activists called “freegans” find perfectly edible baked goods, fruits, vegetables and even sushi in restaurant and market garbage cans and dumpsters, their only sin being they’ve outlived their “sell by” date. And it is here where the cost comes into focus, in terms of the land, water and energy needed to produce the food and then on the back end, the methane (a greenhouse gas) that is emitted when it rots in a landfill, thus contributing to climate change. “The one thing I was kind of haunted with at the end of that trash tour,” Hedayat says, “is this idea that waste is absolutely built into the system. Standing there holding those warm, delicious cookies having just been chucked out, I realized that money, value – all these things are arbitrary, and it’s up to us what we value and we just do not value things the way that we would like to. “Everyone always wants to aspire to the highest level,” she continues, “where we have to do so much better with something like food, because the amount we throw away is terrible. Of course, no one wants to do it, no one willingly does it. But the cumulative effect is so gargantuan that unless we really figure out ways around it, we’re not going to be able to continue in this way.”
