Jimmy Kimmel is back to host 90th Oscars

Though Jimmy Kimmel doesn’t expect another misstep in the announcement of an Academy Award winner, he concedes he wouldn’t mind if it happened. After last year’s error heard round the world, with “La La Land” declared best picture – instead of the movie actually specified in the envelope, “Moonlight” – ABC late-night host Kimmel returns for the second consecutive year to preside over the network’s broadcast of the 90th Oscar ceremony Sunday, March 4. Presented again from Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre, the event is sure to reflect the new consciousness about sexual misconduct that has rocked the entertainment industry in recent months. However, Kimmel also wants the occasion to be the fun that it’s always been for movie lovers. “I think it’s important to make the people in the room laugh,” he reasons, “and if the people in the room laugh, the audience at home will at least ... you know, we’ve been conditioned to react to a laugh track since probably the ’50s. And I think it’s important for the audience at home to hear people laughing, maybe even more important than making them laugh themselves.” Regarding the awards themselves, vote counter and envelope guard PricewaterhouseCoopers has instituted several new rules to prevent last year’s now-legendary wrong-winner gaffe from reoccurring. Still, Kimmel muses, “If it happens again, literally everyone that works at ABC should be fired, right? If it happens one time, that’s, I think, understandable. But if it happens a second time, no one (there) is competent enough to be running a television show or network ... so I don’t think it’s going to happen again. PBS salutes Fred Rogers with ‘Mister Rogers: It’s You I Like’ For 33 years and nearly 900 episodes, Fred Rogers was a gentle, cardigan-clad presence in the lives of generations of American children, helping them learn about life, process its ups and downs, overcome fears and understand that everyone is indeed special. More than 16 years after his last show, the lessons of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” still resonate in rebroadcasts. Yet, this unassuming man with degrees in divinity and music composition would insist that he’s not a teacher, just someone who knows how to get children to learn. A half-century after the show’s 1968 premiere, PBS pays tribute to this soft-spoken dynamo with “Mister Rogers: It’s You I Like,” which airs on its stations beginning Tuesday, March 6 (check local listings). Hosted by actor and former “Neighborhood” stagehand Michael Keaton, the hourlong documentary features clips of the show and recollections and insights from filmmaker Judd Apatow, actor John Lithgow, comedian Sarah Silverman, TV personality Whoopi Goldberg, cellist Yo-Yo Ma and his son Nicholas, opera singer Joyce DiDonato, Rogers’ widow

Because when you think of it, the neighborhood may be somewhat dated visually, but the messages are never dated. They’re evergreen.”

MARISKA HARGITAY Mariska Hargitay was born in 1964, in Santa Monica, California. Her parents are Mickey Hargitay and Jayne Mansfield. She is the youngest of their three children. In June 1967, Hargitay and her two brothers were in the backseat of a car when it was involved in the fatal accident that killed her mother. The children escaped with minor injuries. She majored in theater at UCLA. Her first motion picture feature was the cult favorite, “Ghoulies” in 1984, in which she gave a memorable performance as Donna. Unlike her mother, who had changed her name, her hair color, and did nude pictorials to become a star, Hargitay took a very different approach on her journey to become a star. She rejected advice to change her name and appearance. And she refused to copy her mother’s image by turning down nude scenes in her films. Her recurring role on the top-rated “ER” in 1998 gave her career enough of a jolt to land her the starring role of Det. Olivia Benson in “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” She played Olivia as a tough, compassionate detective, and did action scenes and her own stunt work, reaping the rewards from

Hargitay became one of the highest-paid actresses on television, winning Emmy and Golden Globe awards for her performances on “Law & Order: SVU.” The show also changed her personal life, since she met her husband, actor Peter Hermann, on the set and married him in 2004. Hargitay became an activist, when fans of her show, who had been abused, would write to her, and she founded a non-profit organization called Joyful Heart Foundation to help “survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse.” She gave birth to her son, August, in 2006. But that tremendous joy was soon followed by tremendous sadness when her beloved father, Mickey, died just two months later at the age of 80. Mariska and her husband adopted two children, a girl named Amaya, and a boy named Andrew, within a span of few months in 2011.

Carmelo Anthony’s list of accomplishments is a mile long, but one thing is missing and that is an NBA championship. Now with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Russell Westbrook, he may get a chance to advance deeper than ever in the NBA playoffs. The Thunder’s up-and-down season continues Saturday, March 10 on ABC when they host the San Antonio Spurs, a Western Conference rival. Anthony’s arrival in OKC via a trade from the New York Knicks in September quickly raised the stock of the Thunder in terms of being a serious contender in the West; no easy task compared to the East. Eventually Anthony and Westbrook appeared to click and the Thunder offense began to put up some serious points. They enjoyed a six-game winning streak in December and followed that up with an eight-game stretch in January. But there have been some losing streaks as well. Along the way Anthony has moved to 22nd on the NBA all-time scoring list and is one of only six players to score 24,000 points, grab 6,000 rebounds, have 2,500 assists, 1,000 steals and sink 1,000 3-point field goals. In his only college season he won a championship at Syracuse and has three Olympic gold medals along with a bronze as a member of Team USA in each of the past four Summer Olympic games. In the next month Anthony and the Thunder will be setting themselves up for a playoff run in hopes of dethroning the Golden State Warriors in the West.

Netflix’s ‘Ugly Delicious’ demonstrates the beauty of being open-minded Do you think the best Cajun food is found in New Orleans? Does chain pizza make you sniff and turn up your nose in disapproval? Do you feel that a dish prepared in the tradition of the old country is the only way to go? If so, David Chang has a message for you: Authenticity is overrated and you need to open your mind to new ideas and methods. And if you watch his new Netflix documentary series “Ugly Delicious,” you just might. You food snob, you. “That’s 100 percent one of the tenets of the show ...,” the New York-based chef and restaurateur explains. “One of the things that continued to come up in our (production) conversations was authenticity and importation of ideas. And what makes something good? ... And can Japan have the best pizza in the world if Japan makes everything else great? And to really challenge your assumptions. So part of that was: Where can we go to places that can help facilitate that story?” In each hourlong episode, Chang and a long list of special guests that includes entertainers, writers and fellow chefs, hit

the road to check out things like VietCajun cuisine in Houston, home cooking in Copenhagen and pizza in multiple locales. Along the way, he endeavors to use food as vehicle to break down cultural barriers, refute misconceptions and uncover shared experiences. His show on pizza is a good example. Here, he goes to such locations as New Jersey, Tokyo and Connecticut to see how the people there make it. He also rides shotgun with a Domino’s delivery man and advances his argument that just because it’s chain food, that doesn’t mean it’s bad. “I actually do like Domino’s,” he says. “That doesn’t make someone a philistine for liking Domino’s. ... And I think that’s something that happens far too often in the food world, where you castigate or ... judge a person strictly because of their taste in something. When the reality is, hey, not everyone might be able to go to Tokyo or New Haven or whatever and have really what objectively might be better pizza. But if they get good pizza and if they enjoy it, that doesn’t invalidate it.”
