Kelly Clarkson presides over NBC’s first Billboard Music Awards telecast Kelly Clarkson will use her voice in several ways on NBC in the coming days. The first “American Idol” has spent recent weeks on her first season as a full-time coach and mentor on “The Voice,” which ends its 14th round Monday and Tuesday, May 21 and 22. She’s also in a Red Nose Day edition of “Hollywood Game Night” Thursday, May 24 ... but first, Clarkson serves as host of the Billboard Music Awards – in the ceremony’s first NBC telecast after moving from ABC – on Sunday, May 20. Among performers confirmed early for the event, Shawn Mendes and Korean pop act BTS (both nominated for Top Social Artist) are scheduled to take the stage during the three-hour broadcast from Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena. So are Camila Cabello (who has four nominations, including Top New Artist and Top Female Artist) and Dua Lipa. Ariana Grande is slated to open the show. Kendrick Lamar, Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran are tied for the most Billboard Music Award nominations this year with 15 each. They’re followed by Post Malone (with 13), Imagine Dragons (11), Drake (nine), and Justin Bieber and Cardi B (eight each). Also figuring prominently into the competition – in which winners are determined from album and digital sales, radio airplay, streaming, touring and social-media engagement – are Daddy Yankee and Luis Fonsi, with seven bids each, and Taylor Swift (with five). Clarkson counts three Grammys among her own music honors ... plus four American Music Awards, two Academy of Country Music Awards and a Country Music Association Award. admits with her typical candor to maintaining her own take on competitions, despite her new hosting role. “I don’t know if it’s fair to ever compare,” she reflects, “because it’s a hard thing to do with any artist. That’s like saying Aretha Franklin is a better singer, or that Whitney Houston’s a better singer than Aretha Franklin because she sold more records. Well, that’s not true. They’re both undoubtedly amazing singers. It’s just that everybody has their own path.” Clarkson goes as far as to say that she doesn’t think comparing artists is “ever a smart thing to do, especially when you just never know ... especially if you’re building a career. Not every career is ‘overnight,’ like mine or some people’s. (That was) because it was a brand-new thing that nobody had ever heard. The stars were aligned, so you kind of have to take into context what all’s happening.” Indeed, Clarkson believes artists shouldn’t be discounted just “because they haven’t reached Lady Gaga potential. They pay their bills and they live their dream, and I think that counts. And that matters.”

Finding your confidence at the Miss USA pageant For many women, a beauty pageant title – be it at the state, national or international level – can be a watershed moment, one that can serve as the catalyst for pursuing lifelong ambitions and making dreams come true. It was for Vanessa Lachey, a co-host this year’s 2018 Miss USA pageant. Her crown in the Miss Teen USA pageant in 1998 catapulted her to fame and a career in television. But more importantly, it helped her become her best self. “It really is the beginning of everything that’s happened in my life good ... professionally and personally,” she says. “It was just this moment that I can actually pinpoint that was the moment that I truly found my voice, I found my confidence, I found what I wanted to do in this industry. And they helped me along the way to do that, emotionally and physically helped get me out in front of the right people. ... It still hasn’t really sunk in that was 20 years ago. I’m the old lady on stage, I guess.” Airing live Monday, May 21, on Fox, the 67th Miss USA pageant at the Hirsch Memorial Coliseum in Shreveport-Bossier, La., will see 51 contestants from each state and the District of Columbia vying for the title and the right to represent the U.S. at the 2018 Miss Universe pageant later this year. Reigning Miss USA Kára McCullough will crown her successor and Nick Lachey’s band 98 degrees will be making an appearance.

NEIL FLYNN Neil Richard Flynn was born November 13, 1960 in the South Side of Chicago, Illinois. He is of Irish descent and was raised Roman Catholic. He was the third of six children. Flynn was a student at Waukegan East High School in Waukegan, Illinois. In 1978, he won an Illinois Individual Events state championship for “Humorous Duet Acting” with partner Mike Shklair. He graduated from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois in 1982. He was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity and participated on the Bradley University Speech Team. Flynn acted with the Goodman Theatre and the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago. In 1986, he was nominated for a Joseph Jefferson Award for his role in “The Ballad of the Sad Cafe.” He performed at ImprovOlympic (now known as iO) and the Second City Comedy Troupe. In 1998, he founded the improv team Beer Shark Mice with David Koechner. Flynn had small roles in a number of films, including “Rookie of the Year” (1993), “The Fugitive” (1993), “Baby’s Day Out” (1994), “Chain Reaction” (1996), “Home Alone 3” (1997), “Mean Girls” (2004) and “Indiana

Francisco Lindor looks to get hot in Cleveland The Cleveland Indians are once again the class of the American League Central Division. But to stay there, they’re going to need their young talented shortstop, Francisco Lindor, to get his bat going. Many think it will only be a matter of time, and that Lindor could be in full stride when the Indians wrap up a weekend series against the reigning World Series Champion Houston Astros, Sunday, May 20 on ESPN. Lindor, who hit 33 home runs in 2017, which was more than double his 2016 total, only had four homers through his first 26 games this season. But one of those, he considers the most special of his career. In April, Major League Baseball scheduled a two-game series between the Indians and Minnesota Twins in San Juan, Puerto Rico to help aid in the country’s recovery after the devastation suffered during last year’s hurricane season. Lindor, who spent time visiting his old school and giving baseball clinics, stepped to the plate and belted a two-run homer. His hometown crowd was ecstatic and chanted his name until he stepped out of the dugout for a curtain call, and it became clear why he’s earned the nickname “Mr. Smile.” Lindor, who moved to Florida when he was 12, was drafted out of prep school by the Indians and worked his way through the minors until he was called up in 2015, and nearly won the Rookie of the Year Award. He’s helped the Indians make the postseason the past two years and is poised to return.

Guarnaschelli, with Antonia Lofaso and Simon Majumdar presiding as judges. As for his own experience on â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iron Chef America,â&#x20AC;? Tila recalls his appearance in 2009 competing with and eventually losing to Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto as nerve-wracking. But on the plus side, he says that kind of pressure forges bonds quickly, as did happen between him and his opponent. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are all united by what we do,â&#x20AC;? Tila explains, â&#x20AC;&#x153;but to actually spend time in the arena together brings you actually even closer. And itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s kind of one of those things like, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Hey, great battle.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; You exchange your numbers, you exchange emails and then when you visit each otherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s businesses, each otherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s restaurants. You know Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve made friends for life. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Alton and I are very close,â&#x20AC;? he continues. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have matching tattoos, for Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sake. You know, colleagues became really great friends. Since â&#x20AC;&#x153;Patrick Melroseâ&#x20AC;? spans a very wide arc for the title character, what would you cite as a particularly challenging portion of it to play? This is when heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in the throes of drug addiction, having gone to New York to pick up his fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ashes, and thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a very traumatic night where heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lost to various forms of intravenous abuse. And these voices donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t emulate just from inside him, as they have been partly through a dialoguelike voiceover ... but also, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve come out in manifestations and characterizations in a conversation with himself in his hotel room. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the very definition of externalizing your emotions, I imagine, literally role-playing these different people in a hotel room on your own and high on drugs. Patrick is someone who has a great deal of tenderness, (but) who is a very damaged human being. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s built this armory of humor and wit and irony, which is the one thing (that) in the end he really has to pull free of the gravity of, with the most amount of effort â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which is his fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s true

inheritance, in a sense. He doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t complete the cycle of abuse by becoming an abuser. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a very tender, gentle, loving father and husband, if an unfaithful one. And an inattentive father at times. Each hour of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Patrick Melroseâ&#x20AC;? covers one of the five novels about him. Did that mean many acting variations for you within the same role? You visit these as five very different films, very different eras, very different looks and feels that the central theme holds. The style can really shift for each episode. They really have achieved that. Do you think five hours is enough to dramatize these five books? (With) the amount of material, the quality of it, the performances, the way itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been shot and the way itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been edited and scored, and the primary source material itself ... it deserves more time.
