When Benedict Cumberbatch says he wants to play a certain part, others listen. The actor who has given Sherlock Holmes and Hamlet new images found such a part in Patrick Melrose, the centerpiece of five novels by British author Edward St. Aubyn, who applied many of his own experiences to Patrick’s journey from an abuse-fraught childhood into an adulthood of overcoming addiction and struggling to live his best life. With each of the five episodes covering one of the books, Showtime debuts “Patrick Melrose” on Saturday, May 12. “They are the most extraordinary prose,” Cumberbatch says of the original “Melrose” stories. “They’re an exceptional achievement, and at the heart of the subject matter was a world that I thought I knew ... turned on its head through the perspective of this really unique character, who suffers so much and goes on this extraordinary journey from victimhood to survivor, and (is) a champion of his circumstance in a way. “When you have books that are that rich in detail and have that extraordinary depth of character, you’ve got an amazing blueprint to work off,” adds Cumberbatch, “and you can only ever hope to try to do justice to that kind of work. That’s the biggest challenge of this project, to bring it to the screen and give something back to readers who have already had the most amazing cinematic experience by just reading the novels ... as well as bring it to a wide audience who haven’t yet read the books.” Also an executive producer of “Patrick Melrose,” Cumberbatch has an impressive cast to work with. Jennifer Jason Leigh and Hugo Weaving play Patrick’s unsupportive parents, and Allison Williams (“Girls,” “Get Out”) appears as one of the women who crosses Patrick’s path. “it was so much fun to go back in time and get that sort of ’80s experience,” Williams says, “after having been firmly planted on ‘Girls’ for so many years, it was very fun to sort of reach back not so far and find that character.” Leigh reports she had read the “Melrose” novels and “didn’t think a film could be made of them. And then when I found out that Showtime was doing it and each one was going to be an hour, so you had all five of the novels each at their due time, it made sense – but it still didn’t seem doable. And then I read the adaptation, and it was so fine.” “Patrick Melrose” is a major checkmark on Cumberbatch’s professional bucket list, he maintains: “I can retire after this,” he muses. “This is me signing out. It really has been the most fantastic, rewarding, fulfilling, challenging, innovating and just wonderful experience.”

Uruguay, Hong Kong, Newfoundland on Anthony Bourdain’s Season 11 itinerary Viewers who tuned in to last week’s Season 11 premiere of “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown” were treated to a surprisingly genial discussion of Second Amendment rights between the host and a group of custom weapons makers in West Virginia. Not surprisingly, the opinions among the locals ran toward pro and were very strong. “Look, people were extraordinarily kind to me across the board and welcoming, very hospitable, generous and kind,” Bourdain says. “But obviously politically and on policy issues, there’s a lot of differences and on the issue of gun rights, those particular people, while very nice, were absolutely inflexible. I mean, they were not willing to give an inch. And I don’t know that they are exactly representative of all gun owners but I think it’s an indication of the difficulty of finding some kind of middle ground.” In the new season, which airs Sundays on CNN, the veteran chef and author once again takes the road less traveled to such under-theradar locales as Uruguay, Armenia, Bhutan, Berlin, U.S. Cajun country and the Canadian Maritime province of Newfoundland, meeting the locals and taking in their diverse food and culture along the way.

I think ... the largest percentage of a population to be imprisoned and tortured were Uruguayans during the military regime. And the way that they’ve turned things around and gone in completely the other direction and embraced the democratic process – they vote in enormous numbers. Patrick Reed added his name to the history books when he won the 82nd Masters Tournament back in April. Now he’s got a shot at what is called golf ’s fifth major, the Players Championship, which begins Thursday, May 10 on the Golf Channel and will also later air on NBC. After finishing tied for second in the PGA Championship last year, Reed played spectacular golf in The Masters, taking a lead he would never surrender in the second round, and eventually holding off Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth for his first major championship. Reed’s win at The Masters was the sixth of his career since he turned professional at the age of 20 in 2011. It was also his first PGA Tour victory since The Barclays in 2016, his first FedEx Cup event win. He followed that up in 2017 with a near-miss at the PGA Championship. Where Reed has really excelled has been in team play. He’s represented the United States at the Ryder Cup in 2014 and 2016, helping the U.S. National Team with both. He had the same type of success in the President’s Cup, helping to win that event twice in both 2015 and 2017. He earned the nickname “Captain America” for those efforts. Whether Reed will play his way into being mentioned with the likes of Fowler, Spieth, Rory McIlroy and other PGA Tour regulars remains to be seen. But he now has a major under his belt and a green jacket to go with it.

Jason Smith, a judge on Food Network’s “Best Baker in America,” finds that the elite pastry chefs competing on the series all share some common traits, including what the self-taught Kentuckybased chef calls the ability to “adapt and modify.” “They start pulling out the French style and the different types of styles of baking and pastries ... and then they try to use that in an everyday dessert that we all know, say it’s a strawberry shortcake or a cheesecake,” he explains. “So instead of us getting a very, very nice-tasting cheesecake, you get an exceptional cheesecake that you really just can’t find anywhere. So they start pulling out all their baking prowess and ... you’re seeing desserts that every single thing that they do is so well-done that it just absolutely blows your mind.” In the second season of the competition series, which gets underway Monday, May 7, Smith joins host Scott Conant, fellow judge Marcela Valladolid and rotating guest judges including Yolanda Gampp, Gemma Stafford, Florian Belanger and Zac Young to put the contestants through a series of challenges to determine which possess the skill and artistry to advance through

seven episodes and vie for the title of “Best Baker in America” and a $25,000 grand prize. Included in the many gauntlets the contestants must run is the Skills Challenge, in which the bakers are tasked with creating a basic recipe like a vanilla cake. On the surface it’s a deceptively simple assignment, but Smith says its simplicity can often lull contestants into overconfidence, at which point mistakes occur. “It’s because they’re not paying attention to detail and it is so basic,” Smith says. “Sometimes the basic is harder to do than a very elaborate cake or an elaborate dessert. So that’s what I always tell people, is, ‘OK, you think this is going to be easy, but you have to pay attention to what the recipe is saying. You have to read the instructions thoroughly. You have to make sure you’re doing each one of those steps as closely as possible because it will not turn out.’ “If you decide that, if the recipe says all-purpose flour and you use self-rising, it’s not going to turn out the same,” he continues. “So a lot of people think, ‘Oh, I can just take a shortcut because it’s such a basic recipe, it won’t mess it up.’ And it does every time. It’s not going to work.”

We did 12 episodes in two weeks, and that was great. There’s no script and there was no rehearsal, so we could do two or three in a day. I mean, two weeks? It’s nothing! You just go in and play. I hope it goes well, because the kids are so adorable. And Netflix is great because they’re not like most of the networks. They kind of left us alone. That might have made a suggestion or two, but they weren’t really nitpicky, so that was nice.

Well, people love to laugh. The dentist sketch is over 45 years old, and I dare anybody to watch that and not laugh. And the dress in (the “Gone You’re touring again this year with your With the Wind” spoof) “Went With the Wind” one-woman stage show, so is it safe to gets all the credit, but that sketch was over 20 minutes long, and it was brilliantly written.
